Chronic toxicity of treated and untreated aqueous solutions containing imidazole-based ionic liquids and their oxydized by-products

Reproductive and whole-body toxicity of Ag-doped and -undoped ZIF-8 nanoparticles and the building blocks: An Artemia-based comparative bioassay

The present research assessed, for the first time, toxicity of ZIF-8 (1 mg/L) and the building blocks (0.1 mg/L Zn2+ and 0.4 mg/L 2-methylimidazole (2-MIm)), besides that of AgNPs@ZIF-8 (0.25, 0.5, and 1 mg/L) and AgNO3 (0.1 mg/L) to aquatic organisms. Two consecutive generations (F0 & F1) of Artemia salina were exposed to these chemicals. All of the chemical treatments considerably caused mortality in F0, especially AgNPs@ZIF-8 and AgNO3, whereas F1 displayed notable tolerance and survived comparable to the control group, except in the case of AgNO3 treatment. Similarly, growth indices (weight, mainly in ZIF-8, Zn2+, and 2-MIm; length, in Ag-doped ZIF-8 and AgNO3) were significantly retarded in F0 and especially F1 of all treatments, and 2-MIm caused the greatest length retardation in F0. AgNPs@ZIF-8 (0.5 and 1 mg/L), 2-MIm, and AgNO3 postponed the ovary emergence in about 40%-60% of the exposed F0, and ZIF-8 delayed this phenomenon in some individuals of F0 and F1 up to 6 days. This temporal disturbance was also observed in time to first brood of almost all experimental F0 and F1 groups, with being over 80% of F1 exposed to ZIF-8, 2-MIm, and Zn2+, as well as about 50% of F0 treated with 2-MIm, and Zn2+. The highest neonate number was recorded for F0 and F1 exposed to AgNO3 and Zn2+, while ZIF-8 and, importantly, 2-MIm decreased the reproductivity to the lowest levels in both generations. Generally, the reproductive frequency was significantly decreased in all F0 and F1 treatments, especially 2-MIm, ZIF-8, AgNPs@ZIF-8 (0.25 & 1 mg/L). This study highlighted the neglected importance of 2-MIm in assessing overall toxicity of ZIF-8, and even other organic ligands of MOFs, and also filled a gap in the literature by investigating the potential effect of additives such as AgNPs on the toxicity of ZIF-8 and other MOFs.

Intergenerational toxic effects of 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium chloride and 1-dodecylpyridinium chloride on the water flea, Moina macrocopa

Ionic liquids (ILs) are generally considered eco-friendly alternatives to conventional industrial solvents, but they are hard to degrade and easily accumulate in the environment. Therefore, their long-term toxicities are especially vital to estimate their potential risk. However, the chronic toxicities of ILs over generations lacked intensive investigation. In the present work, acute toxicity and chronic toxicity of 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium chloride ([Omim]Cl) and 1-dodecylpyridinium chloride ([DPy]Cl) were studied on Moina macrocopa with the first exposed generation (F0) and two successive recovery generation (F1 to F2). The acute results showed that both [Omim]Cl and [DPy]Cl exhibited high toxicity to M. macrocopa. The chronic results indicated that the exposure of [Omim]Cl and [DPy]Cl could inhibit the survivorship, body length, and reproduction of M. macrocopa and exhibited a significant dose-related decrease. Furthermore, these two types of ILs presented intergenerational toxicity in the water flea. And the toxic effects of [Omim]Cl disappeared in the recovery tests of F2 generation, while the [DPy]Cl toxic effects continued. Our research suggested a potential risk for the aquatic ecosystem induced by ILs. And the damage done by these chemicals to the aquatic environment is worthy of attention.

Toxicity of ionic liquids in marine and freshwater microorganisms and invertebrates: state of the art

The variety of applications and expected growth in ionic liquid production are raising concerns about the release of these compounds into aquatic systems. Up to date, 103 studies have provided ecotoxicological data regarding the exposure effects of Ionic Liquids towards aquatic microorganisms and invertebrate species: 61 were devoted to freshwater species (n = 28), while marine species (n = 12) were mentioned in 42. The aim of this review, by gathering published studies on ionic liquids and model aquatic organisms, was to present the toxic effects described in distinct species and to understand which are the main factors influencing the toxicity of some ionic liquids. In accordance with the most recognized pattern, freshwater species were featured in a higher number of publications than marine ones. After literature analysis, algal species were the most represented organisms in aquatic toxicity assessments. Among tested compounds, the imidazolium cations in combination with long alkyl-chain anions, showed to be the most toxic one. In analytical terms, it is not straightforward to find the undissociated compound in a natural compartment, as ionic liquids are composed of ionic components, easily subjected to dissociation. Given the aforementioned, the present review paper points out the need of increasing the number of organisms being assessed in ionic liquids toxicity assays, in order to start defining monitoring procedures. Moreover, such would allow a better understanding of ionic liquids contamination status and, also, the opportunity to remark the effectiveness of new in silico methods for the ecotoxicity assessment of this kind of substances.

Density Functional Method Study on the Cooperativity of Intermolecular H-bonding and π-π+ Stacking Interactions in Thymine-[Cnmim]Br (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) Microhydrates

The exploration of the ionic liquids’ mechanism of action on nucleobase’s structure and properties is still limited. In this work, the binding model of the 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([Cnmim]Br, n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) ionic liquids to the thymine (T) was studied in a water environment (PCM) and a microhydrated surroundings (PCM + wH2O). Geometries of the mono-, di-, tri-, and tetra-ionic thymine (T-wH2O-y[Cnmim]+-xBr−, w = 5~1 and x + y = 0~4) complexes were optimized at the M06-2X/6-311++G(2d, p) level. The IR and UV-Vis spectra, QTAIM, and NBO analysis for the most stable T-4H2O-Br−-1, T-3H2O-[Cnmim]+-Br−-1, T-2H2O-[Cnmim]+-2Br−-1, and T-1H2O-2[Cnmim]+-2Br−-1 hydrates were presented in great detail. The results show that the order of the arrangement stability of thymine with the cations (T-[Cnmim]+) by PCM is stacking > perpendicular > coplanar, and with the anion (T-Br−) is front > top. The stability order for the different microhydrates is following T-5H2O-1 < T-4H2O-Br−-1 < T-3H2O-[Cnmim]+-Br−-1 < T-2H2O-[Cnmim]+-2Br−-1 < T-1H2O-2[Cnmim]+-2Br−-1. A good linear relationship between binding EB values and the increasing number (x + y) of ions has been found, which indicates that the cooperativity of interactions for the H-bonding and π-π+ stacking is varying incrementally in the growing ionic clusters. The stacking model between thymine and [Cnmim]+ cations is accompanied by weaker hydrogen bonds which are always much less favorable than those in T-xBr− complexes; the same trend holds when the clusters in size grow and the length of alkyl chains in the imidazolium cations increase. QTAIM and NBO analytical methods support the existence of mutually reinforcing hydrogen bonds and π-π cooperativity in the systems.

Degradation of chloromethylisothiazolinone antimicrobial by Vacuum-Ultraviolet/Ultraviolet irradiation: Reactive species, degradation pathway and toxicity evaluation

Chloromethylisothiazolinone (CMIT) has been extensively used as antimicrobial in cosmetics, detergents, wall paints, and anti-fouling products. To prevent the potential ecological and health risks, the degradation mechanisms and toxicity changes of CMIT by Vacuum-Ultraviolet/Ultraviolet (VUV/UV) irradiation were investigated in this study. VUV/UV irradiation showed better performance on CMIT degradation compared to sole UV photolysis. The removal efficiency of CMIT with photon fluence of 0.6 μEinstein/cm² was 8% and 100% by UV or VUV/UV irradiation, respectively. Radical quenching experiments indicated that 254 nm photolysis, 185 nm photolysis, and •OH oxidation contributed to CMIT degradation during VUV/UV process, with fluence-based apparent rate constants of 0.16, 0.13, and 4.9 μEinstein^-1cm², respectively. The formation of H₂O₂ during VUV/UV process increased to 0.7 mg/L at 4.5 min, and the concentration of •OH ranged within 1.0-3.8 × 10^-12 M. The degradation of CMIT by VUV/UV irradiation in neutral condition was slightly higher than that in acidic and basic conditions. The removal efficiency of CMIT with reaction time of 2 min decreased from 92.2% to 34.3% when the concentration of HCO₃^-/CO₃^2- increased to 1 mM. The degradation of CMIT by VUV/UV irradiation in secondary effluents was lower than that in ultrapure water because of the •OH scavenging effects, but still 2.9 times higher than that by UV photolysis. Four main degradation mechanisms of CMIT were observed during VUV/UV process, including the oxidation of sulfur, addition of hydroxyl groups on the double-carbon-bond, demethylation on the nitrogen, and substitution of organochlorine atom by hydroxyl group. Based on the quantitative structure activity relationship analysis, most products of CMIT underwent complete detoxification to fish and daphnia. 40% of products still showed acute toxicity to algae, but most of them were less toxic than CMIT.

Physiological responses of Pichia stipitis to imidazolium chloride ionic liquids with different carbon chain length

Ionic liquids (ILs) are used as detoxication agents for fermentation of lignin into ethanol because of their good applicability. However, the residual ILs may be toxic to the yeast. In order to improve the use of ILs for fermentation and protected environment, the toxicity of ILs with different carbon chain length to Pichia stipitis was studied in this paper. Four kinds of common imidazolium chloride ILs ([C₄mim]Cl, [C₆mim]Cl, [C₈mim]Cl and [C₁₀mim]Cl) were selected. ILs can inhibit the proliferation of Pichia stipitis and increase their mortality. Oxidative stress reaction occurred in the cells, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes are affected. Comparing with the integrated biomarker response (IBR) index, it was found that the toxicity increases with increasing chain length. ILs may enter cells by damaging cell membranes and reduce ethanol production by damaging organelles such as mitochondria. ILs caused wrinkles and dents on the surface of cells up to cell deformation and even rupture. The toxicity sequence was as follows: [C₁₀mim]Cl> [C₈mim]Cl>[C₆mim]Cl>[C₄mim]Cl. Due to this toxicity to Pichia stipitis, these compounds should be used carefully in the fermentation process and also to avoid toxic effects on other organisms in the environment.

Ecotoxicity and photodegradation of Montelukast (a drug to treat asthma) in water

The present work focuses on the ecotoxicological effects of montelukast sodium (MTL) and its photoproducts, obtained under environmentally-like conditions. Despite of the potential presence in surface waters and the common use of MTL as asthma drug, limited data has been published for its photodegradation, while no information is available for its ecotoxicity. Light-induced degradation is an effective way for drugs to degrade in aquatic environments, and MTL is highly photosensitive, even by exposure to sunlight. In this study, solar-simulated irradiation of the drug in water was investigated. The drug was quickly converted into a series of photoproducts that were spectroscopically characterized. The possible photoreaction pathways were proposed. Ecotoxicity tests were performed on parent compound and mixture of photoproducts towards two bioindicators (Raphidocelis subcapitata and Daphnia magna). Results evidenced that effects of MTL on D. magna (EC50 = 16.4 mg/L) were greater than effects on R. subcapitata (EC50 = 195.7 mg/L). Microscopy observations revealed that MTL had mainly accumulated in the gut of daphnia. Toxicity data on photolysed solutions highlighted the presence of residual toxicity in all samples, evidencing that no complete mineralization occurred. Future research should focus on monitoring of MTL concentrations in the environment and study its effects in bioaccumulation tests.

Magnetic nanoparticle-supported sulfonic acid as a green catalyst for the one-pot synthesis of 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazoles and 1,2,4,5-tetrasubstituted imidazoles under solvent-free conditions

In this work, magnetic nanoparticle-supported sulfonic acid (γ-Fe2O3-SO3H) is used as an efficient catalyst in the synthesis of 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazoles and 1,2,4,5-tetrasubstituted imidazoles in a short time (40–70 min for trisubstituted imidazoles and 30–40 min for tetrasubstituted imidazoles) and high-purity products were obtained (92–98% for trisubstituted imidazoles and 94–98% for tetrasubstituted imidazoles) in simple multicomponent reactions. The structure of these products was confirmed via FT-IR and NMR. Green and recyclable catalysts, eco-friendly and solvent-free conditions, high catalytic activity, shorter reaction time, easy recovery by an external magnet, high purity, and excellent yields are some features of these reactions.

Review of the toxic effects of ionic liquids

Interest in ionic liquids (ILs), called green or designer solvents, has been increasing because of their excellent properties such as thermal stability and low vapor pressure; thus, they can replace harmful organic chemicals and help several industrial fields e.g., energy-storage materials production and biomaterial pretreatment. However, the claim that ILs are green solvents should be carefully considered from an environmental perspective. ILs, given their minimal vapor pressure, may not directly cause atmospheric pollution. However, they have the potential to cause adverse effects if leaked into the environment, for instance if they are spilled due to human mistakes or technical errors. To estimate the risks of ILs, numerous ILs have had their toxicity assessed toward several micro- and macro-organisms over the past few decades. Since the toxic effects of ILs depend on the method of estimating toxicity, it is necessary to briefly summarize and comprehensively discuss the biological effects of ILs according to their structure and toxicity testing levels. This can help simplify our understanding of the toxicity of ILs. Therefore, in this review, we discuss the key findings of toxicological information of ILs, collect some toxicity data of ILs to different species, and explain the influence of IL structure on their toxic properties. In the discussion, we estimated two different sensitivity values of toxicity testing levels depending on the experiment condition, which are theoretical magnitudes of the inherent sensitivity of toxicity testing levels in various conditions and their changes in biological response according to the change in IL structure. Finally, some perspectives, future research directions, and limitations to toxicological research of ILs, presented so far, are discussed.

Ecotoxicological effect of ketoconazole on the antioxidant system of Daphnia similis

The occurrence of emerging pharmaceutical pollutants (i.e. small drugs, antibiotics) present in aquatic environments shown to be a current environmental problem still without apparent solution. In this regard, the use of ecotoxicological techniques has been shown fundamental for the appraisal of damage to affected living organisms. Herein, ecotoxicological tests were conducted, focusing on the evaluation of the effects of ketoconazole (KTZ) on the antioxidant system of the model body Daphnia similis. In order to study the biochemical changes caused by KTZ in the antioxidant system, the enzymatic biomarkers glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were monitored. Toxicological tests were conducted using KTZ concentrations (0-10 μg·L^-1). Prolonged exposure to KTZ (336 h) caused changes upon the expression of antioxidant enzymes and simultaneously affected the reproductive system in those organisms. Moreover, a decrease in GST and APX activity was observed caused by KTZ exposure, respectively 79.2% (3.53 μmol min^-1 mg^-1 protein) and 24.4% (0.88 μmol min^-1 mg^-1 protein). On the other hand, it was observed an increase of 27% (0.17 μmol min^-1 mg^-1 protein) in CAT activity. Through this study, it was possible to observe the toxicological effects of KTZ, which proves its action as an oxidative stress-inducing agent and endocrine modifier in daphnids organisms.

Multi- and trans-generational effects of N-butylpyridium chloride on reproduction, lifespan, and pro/antioxidant status in Caenorhabditis elegans

Ionic liquids (ILs) became emerging pollutants. Their poor degradation and accumulation in organisms urged studies on the long-term effects and also the underlying mechanisms. Currently, 1-butylpyrinium chloride ([bpyr]Cl) was chosen to represent the pyridine-based ILs. Its multi-generational effects were measured on C. elegans for 14 consecutive generations (F1 to F14), and the trans-generational effects were also measured in the great-grand-children (T3 and T3') of F1 and F14. The multi-generational results from F1 to F14 showed that the effects of [bpyr]Cl on the initial and total reproduction and lifespan showed oscillation between inhibition and stimulation. Notably, hormetic effects on reproduction were observed in F7 to F10. The trans-generational effects in T3 and T3' showed different residual consequences between one generational exposure (F1) and multiple generational exposure (F14). Further biochemical analysis showed that the pro/antioxidant status also showed oscillation between inhibition and stimulation. The oscillation levels were greater in superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and protein carbonyl content (PC) than those in glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hydroxyl radical (OH). The pro/antioxidant status contributed to both multi- and trans-generational effects of [bpyr]Cl. Future studies should pay attentions to the long-term influence of ILs and also epigenetic explanations.

Evaluating the hazardous impact of ionic liquids - Challenges and opportunities

Ionic liquids (ILs), being related to the design of new environmentally friendly solvents, are widely considered for applications within the "green chemistry" concept. Due to their unique properties and wide diversity, ILs allow tailoring new separation procedures and producing new materials for advanced applications. However, despite the promising technical performance, environmental concerns highlighted in recent studies focused on the toxicity and biodegradability of ILs and their metabolites have revealed that ILs safety labels are not as benign as previously claimed. This review refers to the fundamentals about the properties and applications of ILs also in the context of their potential environmental effect. Toxicological issues and harmful effects related to the use of ILs are discussed, including the evaluation of their biodegradability and ecological impact on diverse organisms and ecosystems, also with respect to bacteria, fungi, and cell cultures. In addition, this review covers the tools used to assess the toxicity of ILs, including the predictive computational models and the results of studies involving cell membrane models and molecular simulations. Summing up the knowledge available so far, there are still no reliable criteria for unequivocal attribution of toxicity and environmental impact credentials for ILs, which is a challenging research task.

Ionic Liquids-A Review of Their Toxicity to Living Organisms

Ionic liquids (ILs) were initially hailed as a green alternative to traditional solvents because of their almost non-existent vapor pressure as ecological replacement of most common volatile solvents in industrial processes for their damaging effects on the environment. It is common knowledge that they are not as green as desired, and more thought must be put into the biological consequences of their industrial use. Still, compared to the amount of research studying their physicochemical properties and potential applications in different areas, there is a scarcity of scientific papers regarding how these substances interact with different organisms. The intent of this review was to compile the information published in this area since 2015 to allow the reader to better understand how, for example, bacteria, plants, fish, etc., react to the presence of this family of liquids. In general, lipophilicity is one of the main drivers of toxicity and thus the type of cation. The anion tends to play a minor (but not negligible) role, but more research is needed since, owing to the very nature of ILs, except for the most common ones (imidazolium and ammonium-based), many of them are subject to only one or two articles.

Kinetic Modeling of Advanced Oxidation Processes Using Microreactors: Challenges and Opportunities for Scale-Up

With the increasing number of recalcitrant pollutants in wastewater treatment plants, there will be a stringent need for rapid and convenient development of tertiary treatment processes such as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Microreactors offer a great opportunity for ultrafast and safe intrinsic kinetic parameters determination, by-products identification, and ecotoxicity assessment. Despite the considerable potential of these devices, they have been mostly used for catalyst screening or pseudo-first order kinetics determination, not allowing for knowledge transfer across scales. This work offers an overview of the adoption of micro- and photo-microreactors for intrinsic kinetics investigations in the field of AOPs to guide future research efforts.

Life stage-dependent toxicities of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide on Caenorhabditis elegans

Ionic liquids (ILs) are considered as extracting solvents in soil remediation. However, they can be pollutants themselves, and their own toxicities are of concerns. Notably, organisms were exposed to pollutants at random life stages in actual environmental exposure scenario, which is different from the set-up of one uniform life stage in usual experiment designs. The influence of life stages on ILs toxicities will provide essential information on their actual environmental risks. In the present study, effects of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C₂mim]Br) were measured on C. elegans with egg exposure and adult exposure. In egg exposure, [C₂mim]Br increased the lifespan, stimulated initial reproduction and inhibited the total reproduction. Biochemical indices including oxidative stress, antioxidant responses and oxidative damage were further measured to explore the toxicity mechanisms. Results showed that [C₂mim]Br significantly stimulated O₂^-· as the oxidative stress and superoxide dismutase (SOD) as the antioxidant defense. In adult exposure, [C₂mim]Br inhibited initial reproduction, total reproduction and lifespan. Biochemical results showed that [C₂mim]Br significantly stimulated H₂O₂ and oxidized glutathione (GSSG). The overall findings demonstrated that [C₂mim]Br caused life stage-dependent toxicities on C. elegans. Future studies are still needed for the detailed mechanisms.

Utilization of green organic solvents in solvent extraction and liquid membrane for sustainable wastewater treatment and resource recovery-a review

Water pollution and depletion of natural resources have motivated the utilization of green organic solvents in solvent extraction (SX) and liquid membrane (LM) for sustainable wastewater treatment and resource recovery. SX is an old and established separation method, while LM, which combines both the solute removal and recovery processes of SX in a single unit, is a revolutionary separation technology. The organic solvents used for solute removal in SX and LM can be categorized into sole conventional, mixed conventional-green, and sole green organic solvents, whereas the stripping agents used for solute recovery include acids, bases, metal salts, and water. This review revealed that the performance of greener organic solvents (mixed conventional-green and sole green organic solvents) was on par with the sole conventional organic solvents. However, some green organic solvents may threaten food security, while others could be pricey. The distinctive extraction theories of various sole green organic solvents (free fatty acid-rich oils, triglyceride-rich oils, and deep eutectic solvents) affect their application suitability for a specific type of wastewater. Organic liquid wastes are among the optimal green organic solvents for SX and LM in consideration of their triple environmental, economic, and performance benefits.

Multigenerational plasticity of Daphnia magna under thermal stress across ten generations

The effects of increasing temperature owing to thermal discharge and global warming on zooplanktons such as Daphnia magna are a growing concern. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of elevated temperature (25 °C) on oxidative stress responses, growth, and reproduction of D. magna across 10 generations. The number of offspring per female at 21 d was significantly increased and the rate of adult somatic growth (5-21 d) was decreased in the F0 generation at 25 °C compared with those at the reference temperature 20 °C. However, the F3 generation showed the lowest number of offspring and the highest adult somatic growth rate and oxidative stress responses (5 d) at 25 °C. Moreover, all life-history traits seemed to recover to the levels of the control group from the F6 generation at 20 °C. These findings suggest that D. magna under continuous thermal stress exhibits non-adaptive responses in the early generations (F0-F3) and changes to adaptive responses in the later generations (F6-F9). However, the underlying epigenetic mechanism should be identified in the future.

Development and Validation of a LC-MS/MS Method for Determination of Multi-Class Antibiotic Residues in Aquaculture and River Waters, and Photocatalytic Degradation of Antibiotics by TiO2 Nanomaterials

This study presents a multi-residue method for simultaneous qualitative and quantitative analysis of eight antibiotics from some common classes, including beta-lactam, tetracyclines, lincosamides, glycopeptides, and sulfonamides in 39 aquaculture and river water samples from the Mekong Delta (Vietnam) using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). As a result, doxycycline (DXC), oxytetracycline (OTC), lincomycin (LCM), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and sulfamethazine (SMZ) were detected with high frequency over 65% and an average concentration of 22.6–76.8 ng·mL−1. The result suggests that antibiotic residues in the aquaculture and river waters are considered as an emerging environmental problem of the region. To address this issue, we fabricated the well-defined TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) and nanowires on nanotube arrays (TNWs/TNAs) using the anodization method. The TNAs had an inner tube diameter of ~95 nm and a wall thickness of ~25 nm. Meanwhile, the TNWs/TNAs had a layer of TiO2 nanowires with a length of ~6 µm partially covering the TNAs. In addition, both TNAs and TNWs/TNAs had pure anatase phase TiO2 with (101) and (112) dominant preferred orientations. Moreover, the TNAs and TNWs/TNAs effectively and rapidly degraded the antibiotic residues under UV-VIS irradiation at 120 mW/cm2 and obtained over 95% removal at 20 min. Indeed, the photocatalytic reaction rate constants (k) were in the range of 0.14–0.36 min−1 for TNAs, and 0.15–0.38 min−1 for TNWs/TNAs. Noticeably, the k values of TNWs/TNAs were slightly higher than those of TNAs for LCM, DXC, OTC, SMZ, and SMX that could be attributed to the larger surface area of TNWs/TNAs than TNAs when TNWs/TNAs had an additional ~6μm TNWs top layer.

Ultrafast photodegradation of isoxazole and isothiazolinones by UV254 and UV254/H2O2 photolysis in a microcapillary reactor

The photodegradation process of methylisothiazolinone (MIT), benzisothiazolinone (BIT), and isoxazole (ISOX) in ultrapure water and synthetic wastewater by means of UV₂₅₄ photolysis and by UV₂₅₄/H₂O₂ advanced oxidation process were investigated in a microcapillary photoreactor designed for ultrafast photochemical transformation of microcontaminants. For the first time, we estimated key photo-kinetic parameters, i.e. quantum yields (35.4 mmol·ein^-1 for MIT, and 13.5 and 55.8 mmol·ein^-1 for BIT at pH = 4-6 and 8, respectively) and rate constants of the reaction of photo-generated OH radicals with MIT and BIT (2.09·10⁹ and 5.9·10⁹ L mol^-1·s^-1 for MIT and BIT). The rate constants of the reaction of photo-generated OH radicals with ISOX in MilliQ water was also estimated (2.15·10⁹ L mol^-1·s^-1) and it was in good agreement with literature indications obtained in different aqueous matrices. The models were extended and validated to the case of simultaneous degradation of mixtures of these compounds and using synthetic wastewater as an aqueous matrix. High resolution-accurate mass spectrometry analysis enabled identification of the main intermediates (BIT200, B200, saccharin, BIT166) and enabled proposal of a novel degradation pathway for BIT under UV₂₅₄/H₂O₂ treatment. This study demonstrates an ultrafast method to determine key photo-kinetic parameters of contaminants of emerging concern in water and wastewater, which are needed for design and validation of photochemical water treatment processes of municipal and industrial wastewaters.
