Abstract
The global demand for sustainable and non-toxic alternatives across various industries is driving the exploration of naturally derived solutions. Hydrosols, also known as hydrolates, represent a promising yet underutilised byproduct of the extraction process of essential oils (EOs). These aqueous solutions contain a complex mixture of EO traces and water-soluble compounds and exhibit significant biological activity. To fully use these new solutions, it is necessary to understand how factors, such as distillation time and plant-to-water ratio, affect their chemical composition and biological activity. Such insights are crucial for the standardisation and quality control of hydrosols. Hydrosols have demonstrated noteworthy properties as natural antimicrobials, capable of preventing biofilm formation, and as antioxidants, mitigating oxidative stress. These characteristics position hydrosols as versatile ingredients for various applications, including biopesticides, preservatives, food additives, anti-browning agents, pharmaceutical antibiotics, cosmetic bioactives, and even anti-tumour agents in medical treatments. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of these activities is also essential for advancing their use. In this context, this review compiles and analyses the current literature on hydrosols' chemical and biological properties, highlighting their potential applications and envisioning future research directions. These developments are consistent with a circular bio-based economy, where an industrial byproduct derived from biological sources is repurposed for new applications.

Abstract
The search for synergies between natural products and commercial antibiotics is a promising strategy against bacterial resistance. This study determined the antimicrobial capacity of Nerol (NE) and Tannic Acid (TA) against 14 pathogenic bacteria, including ESKAPE pathogens. TA exhibited the lowest Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) at 162.5 µg/mL against Pasteurella aerogenes and 187.5 µg/mL against Acinetobacter baumannii (WHO priority 1). NE showed its lowest MIC of 500 µg/mL against both Pasteurella aerogenes and Salmonella enterica. A total of 35 combinations of NE and 13 of TA with eight commercial antibiotics were analyzed. For NE, combinations with Streptomycin and Gentamicin were effective against Salmonella enterica, Bacillus subtilis, and Streptococcus agalactiae, with antibiotic MIC reductions between 75.0 and 87.5%. TA showed six synergies with Chloramphenicol, Ampicillin, Erythromycin, and Streptomycin against Acinetobacter baumannii, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Pasteurella aerogenes, with MIC reductions between 75.0 and 93.7%. Additionally, 31 additive effects with antibiotics for NE and 8 for TA were found. Kinetic studies on these synergies showed complete inhibition of bacterial growth, suggesting that natural products enhance antibiotics by facilitating their access to targets or preventing resistance. Given their safety profiles recognized by the EPA and FDA, these natural products could be promising candidates as antibiotic enhancers.

Abstract
Pleurotus ostreatus, an edible mushroom widely consumed worldwide, generates a by-product known as spent mushroom substrate (SMS). This material has demonstrated biological activity against agricultural crop pathogens. In this study, we evaluated the nematocidal effectiveness of hydroalcoholic extracts (T5, T2, AT5, and AT2) derived from SMS of P. ostreatus against (J2) of the phytonematode Nacobbus aberrans and assessed their potential toxicity towards the non-target nematode Panagrellus redivivus. Among these extracts, AT5 exhibited the highest efficacy against N. aberrans and was the least toxic against P. redivivus. Liquid-liquid partitioning yielded the AQU fraction, which showed significant nematocidal activity against J2 (75.69% ± 8.99 mortality), comparable to chitosan. The GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of several compounds, including palmitic acid, linoleic acid, and 2,4-Di-tert-butylphenol. These findings are consistent with studies confirming the antagonistic effectiveness of these compounds against phytonematodes. Additionally, all extracts exhibited toxicity against P. redivivus, with T2 being the most toxic. Our findings demonstrate that while the AT5 extract displays antagonistic effectiveness against both N. aberrans and P. redivivus, it was the least toxic among the extracts tested. Thus, SMS of P. ostreatus holds potential as a source of nematocidal compounds, which could offer significant benefits for agricultural pest control.

Abstract
This study explores the environmental effects of five common veterinary antibiotics widely detected in the environment, (chlortetracycline,CTC; oxytetracycline,OTC; florfenicol,FF; neomycin, NMC; and sulfadiazine, SDZ) on four bioindicators: Daphnia magna, Vibrio fischeri, Eisenia fetida, and Allium cepa, representing aquatic and soil environments. Additionally, microbial communities characterized through 16 S rRNA gene sequencing from a river and natural soil were exposed to the antibiotics to assess changes in population growth and metabolic profiles using Biolog EcoPlates™. Tetracyclines are harmful to Vibrio fisheri (LC50 ranges of 15-25 µg/mL), and the other three antibiotics seem to only affect D. magna, especially, SDZ. None of the antibiotics produced mortality in E. fetida at concentrations below 1000 mg/kg. NMC and CTC had the highest phytotoxicities in A. cepa (LC50 = 97-174 µg/mL, respectively). Antibiotics significantly reduced bacterial metabolism at 0.1-10 µg/mL. From the highest to the lowest toxicity on aquatic communities: OTC > FF > SDZ ≈ CTC > NMC and on edaphic communities: CTC ≈ OTC > FF > SDZ > NMC. In river communities, OTC and FF caused substantial decreases in bacterial metabolism at low concentrations (0.1 µg/mL), impacting carbohydrates, amino acids (OTC), and polymers (FF). At 10 µg/mL and above, OTC, CTC, and FF significantly decreased metabolizing all tested metabolites. In soil communities, a more pronounced decrease in metabolizing ability, detectable at 0.1 µg/mL, particularly affected amines/amides and carboxylic and ketonic acids (p < 0.05). These new ecotoxicity findings underscore that the concentrations of these antibiotics in the environment can significantly impact both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

Abstract
Tannic acid (TA) is a key tannin extensively used in the leather industry, contributing to around 90% of global leather production. This practice leads to the generation of highly polluting effluents, causing environmental harm to aquatic ecosystems. Additionally, tannins like TA degrade slowly under natural conditions. Despite efforts to reduce pollutant effluents, limited attention has been devoted to the direct environmental impact of tannins. Moreover, TA has garnered increased attention mainly due to its applications as an antibacterial agent and anti-carcinogenic compound. However, our understanding of its ecotoxicological effects remains incomplete. This study addresses this knowledge gap by assessing the ecotoxicity of TA on non-target indicator organisms in both water (Vibrio fischeri, Daphnia magna) and soil environments (Eisenia foetida, Allium cepa), as well as natural fluvial and edaphic communities, including periphyton. Our findings offer valuable insights into TA's ecotoxicological impact across various trophic levels, underscoring the need for more comprehensive investigations in complex ecosystems. Our results demonstrate that TA exhibits ecotoxicity towards specific non-target aquatic organisms, particularly V. fischeri and D. magna, and phytotoxicity on A. cepa. The severity of these effects varies, with V. fischeri being the most sensitive, followed by D. magna and A. cepa. However, the soil-dwelling invertebrate E. foetida shows resistance to the tested TA concentrations. Furthermore, our research reveals that substantial TA concentrations are required to reduce the growth of river microbial communities. Metabolic changes, particularly in amino acid and amine metabolism, are observed at lower concentrations. Notably, the photosynthetic yield of river periphyton remains unaffected, even at higher concentrations. In contrast, soil microbial communities exhibit greater sensitivity, with significant alterations in population growth and metabolic profiles at a very low concentration of 0.2 mg/L for all metabolites. In summary, this study offers valuable insights into the ecotoxicological effects of TA on both aquatic and terrestrial environments. It underscores the importance of considering a variety of non-target organisms and complex communities when assessing the environmental implications of this compound.

Abstract
The development and implementation of safe natural alternatives to synthetic pesticides are urgent needs that will provide ecological solutions for the control of plant diseases, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, pests, and weeds to ensure the economic stability of farmers and food security, as well as protection of the environment and human health. Unambiguously, production of botanical pesticides will allow for the sustainable and efficient use of natural resources and finally decrease the use of chemical inputs and burden. This is further underlined by the strict regulations on pesticide residues in agricultural products and is in harmony with the Farm to Fork strategy, which aims to reduce pesticide use by 50% by 2030. Thus, the present work aims to compile the scientific knowledge of the last 5 years (2017-February 2023) regarding the Mediterranean plants that present biopesticidal effects. The literature review revealed 40 families of Mediterranean plants with at least one species that have been investigated as potential biopesticides. However, only six families had the highest number of species, and they were reviewed comprehensively in this study. Following a systematic approach, the extraction methods, chemical composition, biopesticidal activity, and commonly used assays for evaluating the antimicrobial, pesticidal, repellant, and herbicidal activity of plant extracts, as well as the toxicological and safety aspects of biopesticide formulation, are discussed in detail. Finally, the aspects that have not yet been investigated or are under-investigated and future perspectives are highlighted.

Abstract
Soil-borne phytopathogens can have detrimental effects on both cereal and horticultural crops resulting in serious losses worldwide. Due to their high efficiency and easy applicability, synthetic pesticides are still the primary choice in modern plant disease control systems, but stringent regulations and increasing environmental concerns make the search for sustainable alternatives more pressing than ever. In addition to the incorporation of botanicals into agricultural practices, the diversification of cropping systems with aromatic and medicinal plants is also an effective tool to control plant diseases through providing nutrients and shaping soil microbial communities. However, these techniques are not universally accepted and may negatively affect soil fertility if their application is not thoroughly controlled. Because the biocontrol potential of aromatic and medicinal plants has been extensively examined over the past decades, the present study aims to overview the recent literature concerning the biopesticide effect of secondary metabolites derived from aromatic and medicinal plants on important soil-borne plant pathogens including bacteria, fungi, and nematodes. Most of the investigated herbs belong to the family of Lamiaceae (e.g., Origanum spp., Salvia spp., Thymus spp., Mentha spp., etc.) and have been associated with potent antimicrobial activity, primarily due to their chemical constituents. The most frequently tested organisms include fungi, such as Rhizoctonia spp., Fusarium spp., and Phytophthora spp., which may be highly persistent in soil. Despite the intense research efforts dedicated to the development of plant-based pesticides, only a few species of aromatic herbs are utilized for the production of commercial formulations due to inconsistent efficiency, lack of field verification, costs, and prolonged authorization requirements. However, recycling the wastes from aromatic and medicinal plant-utilizing industries may offer an economically feasible way to improve soil health and reduce environmental burdens at the same time. Overall, this review provides comprehensive knowledge on the efficiency of aromatic herb-based plant protection techniques, and it also highlights the importance of exploiting the residues generated by aromatic plant-utilizing sectors as part of agro-industrial processes.

The aim of this study was to analyse the microbicidal and microbiostatic activity of S. montana hydrolate L., the water-soluble fraction of the hydro-distillation process used to obtain the essential oil, on 14 Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and a fungus of clinical interest. To consider whether this hydrolate is a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional antibiotics, its effect on non-target microorganisms in the aquatic and terrestrial environment was analysed using natural soil and river microorganism communities, characterized through 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results showed that S. montana hydrolate was especially effective (25% v/v concentration) against Pasteurella aerogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae and Acinetobacter baumannii (priority 1, WHO). It was also a microbicide for a further 7 bacterial strains and the fungus Candida albicans (50% v/v concentration). The river and soil communities exposed to the hydrolate showed a decrease in their growth, as well as a decrease in their ability to metabolize polymers and carbohydrates (soil microorganisms) and polymers, carboxylic and ketone acids (river microorganisms). Hydrolates could be an alternative to conventional antibiotics, but their impact on the environment must be taken into account.

Abstract
Antibiotics' (ATBs) occurrence in soil ecosystems has a relevant effect in the structure and functionality of edaphic microbial communities, mainly because of their amendment with manure and biosolids that alter their key ecological functions. In this study, the impact of eight widely consumed ATBs on a natural soil microbial community, characterized through 16 S rRNA gene sequencing, was evaluated. Changes induced by the ATBs in the growth of the soil microbiota and in the community-level physiological profiling (CLPP), using Biolog EcoPlates™, were measured as endpoint. The eight assayed ATBs lead to a significant decrease in the growth of soil microbial communities in a dose-dependent way, ordered by its effect as follows: chloramphenicol > gentamycin > erythromycin > ampicillin > penicillin > amoxicillin > tetracycline > streptomycin. Chloramphenicol, gentamycin, and erythromycin adversely affected the physiological profile of the soil community, especially its ability to metabolize amino acids, carboxylic and ketonic acids and polymers. The analysis of the relationship between the physico-chemical properties of ATBs, as well as their mechanism of action, revealed that, except for the aminoglycosides, each ATB is influenced by a different physico-chemical parameters, even for ATBs of the same family. Significant effects were detected from 100 μg mL to 1, concentrations that can be found in digested sludge, biosolids and even in fertilized soils after repeated application of manure, so cumulative and long-term effects of these antibiotics on soil environment cannot be ruled out.

Abstract
Plant-based products such as essential oils and other extracts have been used for centuries due to their beneficial properties. Currently, their use is widely disseminated through a variety of industries and new applications are continuously emerging. For these reasons, they are produced industrially in large quantities and consequently they have the potential to reach the environment. However, the potential effects that these products have on the ecosystems' health are mostly unknown. In recent years, the scientific community started to focus on the possible toxic effects of essential oils and plant extracts towards non-target organisms. As a result, an increasing body of knowledge has emerged. This review describes the current state of the art on the toxic effects that essential oils and plant extracts have towards organisms from different trophic levels, including producers, primary consumers, and secondary consumers. The majority of the studies (76.5%) focuses on the aquatic environment, particularly in aquatic invertebrates (45.1%) with only 23.5% of the studies focusing on the potential toxicity of plant-derived products on terrestrial ecosystems. While some essential oils and extracts have been described to have no toxic effects to the selected organisms or the toxic effects were only observable at high concentrations, others were reported to be toxic at concentrations below the limit set by international regulations, some of them at very low concentrations. In fact, L(E)C50 values as low as 0.0336 mg.L-1, 0.0005 mg.L-1 and 0.0053 mg.L-1 were described for microalgae, crustaceans and fish, respectively. Generally, essential oils exhibit higher toxicity than extracts. However, when the extracts are obtained from plants that are known to produce toxic metabolites, the extracts can be more toxic than essential oils. Overall, and despite being generally considered "eco-friendly" products and safer than they synthetic counterparts, some essential oils and plant extracts are toxic towards non-target organisms. Given the increasing interest from industry on these plant-based products further research using international standardized protocols is mandatory.

Abstract
Plant parasitic nematodes cause severe damage to crops. Endoparasitic nematophagous fungi (ENF) are a type of important biocontrol fungi, which can cause disease or kill nematodes by producing various spores. As a major ENF, Drechmeria coniospora displays certain potential for controlling plant-parasitic nematodes. In this study, the pathogenicity and secondary metabolites of the endoparasitic fungus D. coniospora YMF1.01759 were investigated. The strain D. coniospora YMF1.01759 had high infection efficiency against nematodes. The process of infecting nematodes by the strain was observed under an electron microscope. Here, 13 metabolites including one new compound 4(S)-butoxy-3-(butoxymethyl)-2-hydroxycyclopent-2-en-1-one (2) were isolated and identified from the fermentation products of D. coniospora YMF1.01759 cultured in a SDAY solid medium. Furthermore, a bioassay showed that 5-hydroxymethylfuran-2-carboxylic acid (1) is toxic to the root knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita and affects the hatching of its egg. Thereby, the nematicidal mortality attained 81.50% at 100 μg/mL for 48 h. Furthermore, egg hatching was inhibited at the tested concentrations, compared with water control eggs. This is the first report on the secondary metabolites of the ENF D. coniospora. The results indicated that D. coniospora could infect nematodes by spores and produce active metabolites to kill nematodes. The biological control potential of D. coniospora against nematodes was expounded further.

Abstract
Citronellol is an acyclic monoterpenoid with a wide range of pharmacological activities (antibacterial, antifungal, anti-lice, repellent, lipolytic, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antidiabetic, anti-cholesterol, among other) and potential to replace synthetic products. However, the impact of citronellol on the environment remains unknown. We analysed, for the first time, the environmental impact of citronellol on river and soil environments using non-target model organisms and natural populations. The acute toxicity of citronellol on the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna, the plant Allium cepa L and the earthworm Eisenia fetida was quantified. The effect of citronellol in a river ecosystem was analysed using river periphyton communities taxonomically characterised and a river microbial community characterised through 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. Finally, a microbial community from natural soil was used to monitor the effect of citronellol on the soil ecosystem. The results showed that E. fetida was most sensitive to citronellol (LC50 = 12.34 mg/L), followed by D. magna (LC50 = 14.11 mg/L). Citronellol affected the photosynthesis of the fluvial periphyton (LC50 = 94.10 mg/L) and was phytotoxic for A. cepa. Furthermore, citronellol modified the growth and metabolism of both fluvial (LC50 = 0.19% v/v) and edaphic (LC50 = 5.07% v/v) bacterial populations. The metabolism of the microorganisms in the soil and water exposed to citronellol decreased with respect to the control, especially their ability to metabolise carbohydrates. Our results show that citronellol has a negative impact on the environment. Although acute effects cannot be expected, it is necessary to quantify the environmental levels as well as the long-term and persistent effects of this monoterpene.

Abstract
Fipronil is a broad-spectrum insecticide whose release in the environment damages many non-target organisms. This study evaluated the toxicity of fipronil at two biological levels using in vivo conditions and environmentally relevant concentrations: the first based on two model organisms (aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna and the unicellular freshwater alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii) and a second based on three natural communities (river periphyton and freshwater and soil microbial communities). The physicochemical properties of fipronil make it apparently unstable in the environment, so its behaviour was followed with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) under the different test conditions. The most sensitive organism to fipronil was D. magna, with median lethal dose (LC50) values from 0.07 to 0.38 mg/L (immobilisation test). Toxicity was not affected by the media used (MOPS or river water), but it increased with temperature. Fipronil produced effects on the photosynthetic activity of C. reinhardtii at 20 °C in MOPS (EC50 = 2.44 mg/L). The freshwater periphyton presented higher sensitivity to fipronil (photosynthetic yield EC50 of 0.74 mg/L) in MOPS and there was a time-dependent effect (toxicity increased with time). Toxicity was less evident when periphyton and C. reinhardtii tests were performed in river water, where the solubility of fipronil is poor. Finally, the assessment of the metabolic profiles using Biolog EcoPlates showed that bacteria communities were minimally affected by fipronil. The genetic identification of these communities based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that many of the taxa are specialists in degrading high molecular weight compounds, including pesticides. This work allows us to better understand the impact of fipronil on the environment at different levels of the food chain and in different environmental conditions, a necessary point given its presence in the environment and the complex behaviour of this compound.

Abstract
In recent years, interest has surged in the development of plant extracts into botanical nematicides as ecofriendly plant protection products. Aromatic plants are maybe the most studied category of botanicals used in this direction and the yielding essential oils are obtained on a commodity scale by hydro distillation. Nevertheless, can the bioactivity of aromatic plants always be attributed to the terpenes content? What would it mean for soil microcosms to bear the treatment of an essential oil to cure against Meloidogyne sp.? Are there other extraction procedures to prepare more ecofriendly botanical products starting from an aromatic material? Lemon thyme is studied herein for the first time for its nematicidal potential. We compare the efficacy of lemon thyme powder, macerate, water extract and essential oil to control Meloidogyneincognita (Chitwood) and Meloidogyne javanica (Chitwood), and we additionally study the secondary effects on soil microbes and free-living nematodes, as well as on tomato plant growth. According to our results lemon thyme powder enhances tomato plants’ growth in a dose-response manner and when it is incorporated in soil at 1 g kg−1, it exhibits nematicidal activity at a 95% level on M.incognita. The water extract yielding from the same dose is nematicidal only if it is left unfiltered; otherwise only a paralysis effect is demonstrated but inside the soil the biological cycle of the pest is not arrested. The essential oil is good both in performing paralysis and biological cycle arrest, but it detrimentally lowers abundances of bacterial and fungal feeding nematodes. On the contrary, lemon thyme powder and unfiltered water extract augments the bacterial biomass, while the latter also increases the bacterivorous nematodes. Overall, the bio fertilizing lemon thyme powder and its unfiltered water extract successfully control root knot nematodes and are beneficial to soil microbes and saprophytic nematodes.
