Converting natural nanoclay into modified nanoclay augments the toxic effect of natural nanoclay on aquatic invertebrates

Chronic toxicity and liver histopathology of mosquito fish (Gambusia holbrooki) exposed to natural and modified nanoclays

Nanoclays are found in the air, water, and soil, and modified nanoclays are being developed and used in several consumer products. For example, modified nanoclays are used to remove pollutants from wastewater. Ironically, however, nanoclays are now considered emerging contaminants. Indeed, release of modified nanoclays in aquatic systems, even as remediating agents, could adversely affect associated wildlife. However, aquatic organisms have interacted with natural nanoclays for millennia, and it is unclear if modified nanoclays induce stronger effects than the nanoclays that occur naturally. The concentrations over which nanoclays occur and illicit negative effects are not well studied. This study investigated the dose response of a natural nanoclay (Na+montmorillonite) relative to two modified nanoclays (Cloisite®30B and Novaclay™) on survival, body condition, and liver pathomorphology of Gambusia holbrooki after 14 days of exposure. Although none of the nanoclays affected survival and body condition of G. holbrooki over 14 days, each nanoclay induced histopathological changes in liver tissues at very low concentrations (LOAEL: 0.01 mgL-1). The effects of nanoclays on hepatic cell circulatory (blood cell aggregation with increased number of Kupffer cells and hemosiderin deposits), regressive (hepatocyte vacuolization), and degenerative (cell death) changes of mosquito fish varied among nanoclay types. Novaclay™ at low concentrations caused circulatory changes on hepatic tissues of G. holbrooki, whereas both natural nanoclays and Cloisite®30B showed little effect on circulatory endpoints. In contrast, all of the nanoclays induced regressive and degenerative changes on liver tissues of mosquito fish across all concentrations tested. This study clearly reveals that natural and modified nanoclays have important health implications for fish and other aquatic organisms. Consequently, the widespread use of modified nanoclays in several applications and increased release of natural nanoclays through erosion or other processes needs to be evaluated in more detail especially in the context of their safety for aquatic systems.

Graphene as a nano-delivery vehicle in agriculture - current knowledge and future prospects

Graphene has triggered enormous interest in, and exploration of, its applications in diverse areas of science and technology due to its unique properties. While graphene has displayed great potential as a nano-delivery system for drugs and biomolecules in biomedicine, its application as a nanocarrier in agriculture has only begun to be explored. Conventional fertilizers and agricultural delivery systems have a number of disadvantages, such as: fast release of the active ingredient, low delivery efficiency, rapid degradation and low stability that often leads to their over-application and consequent environmental problems. Advanced nano fertilizers with high carrier efficiency and slow and controlled release are now considered the gold standard for promoting agricultural sustainability while protecting the environment. Graphene's attractive properties include large surface area, chemical stability, mechanical stability, tunable surface chemistry and low toxicity making it a promising material on which to base agricultural delivery systems. Recent research has demonstrated considerable success in the use of graphene for agricultural applications, including its utilization as a delivery vehicle for plant nutrients and crop protection agents, as well as in post-harvest management of crops. This review, therefore, presents a comprehensive overview of the current status of graphene-based nanocarriers in agriculture. Additionally, the review outlines the surface functionalization methods used for effective molecular delivery, various strategies for nano-vehicle design and the underlying features necessary for a graphene-based agro-delivery system. Finally, the review discusses directions for further research in optimization of graphene-based nanocarriers.

Nanotechnology in agriculture: Comparison of the toxicity between conventional and nano-based agrochemicals on non-target aquatic species

Increased crop production is necessary to keep up with rising food demand. However, conventional agricultural practices and agrochemicals are unable to sustain further increases without serious risk of adverse environmental consequences. The implementation of nanotechnology in agriculture practices has been increasing in recent years and has shown tremendous potential to boost crop production. The rapid growth in development and use of nano-agrochemicals in agriculture will inevitably result in more chemicals reaching water bodies. Some unique properties of nanoformulations may also alter the toxicity of the AI on aquatic organisms when compared to their conventional counterparts. Results from studies on conventional formulations may not properly represent the toxicity of new nanoformulations in the aquatic environment. As a result, current guidelines derived from conventional formulations may not be suitable to regulate those newly developed nanoformulations. Current knowledge on the toxicity of nano-agrochemicals on aquatic organisms is limited, especially in an ecologically relevant setting. This review complies and analyzes 18 primary studies based on 7 criteria to provide a comprehensive analysis of the available toxicity information of nano-agrochemicals and their conventional counterparts on aquatic organisms. Our analysis demonstrates that the overall toxicity of nano-agrochemicals on non-target aquatic species is significantly lower as compared to conventional counterparts. However, further dividing formulations into three categories (organic, bulk and ionic) shows that some nanoformulations can be more toxic when compared to bulk materials but less toxic as compared to ionic formulations while organic nanopesticides do not show a general trend in overall toxicity. Moreover, our analysis reveals the limitations of current studies and provides recommendations for future toxicity studies to ensure the effective and sustainable application of nano-agrochemicals, which will be beneficial to both the agrochemical industry and regulatory agencies alike.

Adsorption behaviour of pollutants: Heavy metals, radionuclides, organic pollutants, on clays and their minerals (raw, modified and treated): A review

The increasing anthropogenic pressure results in environmental pollution and thus adversely affects the integrity of ecosystems. Consequently, various methods of removing pollutants from effluents have been developed and used to minimise this negative impact, with adsorption on clay minerals identified as the most promising approach. This review examines the adsorption of heavy metals, radionuclides, and organic pollutants on clays/clay minerals and their composites under diverse conditions and deals with the applications of these materials in the construction of engineering barriers for waste management. Additionally, we discuss the efficiency and mechanisms of pollutant adsorption on clays subjected to various treatments and modifications while describing the beneficial effects of such modification/treatment on adsorption performance, reusability, and in vivo/in vitro toxicity.

A Novel Open-System Method for Synthesizing Muscovite from a Biotite-Rich Coal Tailing

According to the wide application of muscovite in various industries, many studies have focused on its fabrication. However, the process of its synthesis faces long-standing challenges mainly related to the elevated temperature and pressure ambient, together with time and cost-consuming processes. This research work aims at synthesizing muscovite through a straightforward and direct wet thermal oxidation of an ash sample produced from biotite-rich coal tailings. For this purpose, the lab ash powder was mixed with 35% H2O2 at the room temperature of 25 °C while stirring at 480 rpm. Then, the temperature was gradually raised to 80 °C, and the process ran for 180 min. The dried product and the raw lab ash were characterized by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) methods. The XRD results indicated that the biotite was efficiently converted to the muscovite as the number of relevant peaks was significantly increased in the synthesized product’s pattern. The SEM and FTIR results showed some structural changes, from pseudo-hexagonal in the starting material to amorphous pseudo-crystals in the synthetic product, as well as the growth of the product’s crystals. The crystallographic study and lattice parameter calculations revealed that the starting material and product peaks matched to International Center for Diffraction Data (ICDD reference patterns of 01-080-1110 and 01-082-2450 for the biotite and the muscovite, respectively. Moreover, the calculation of the mean crystallite size of the starting material and treated samples were obtained as 55 nm and 87 nm, respectively. Finally, according to the characterization properties of synthesized muscovite, the presented method was introduced as an effective technique. Therefore, we highly suggest it for further consideration and its development in future investigations.
