Near-infrared excited cooperative upconversion in luminescent Ytterbium(ΙΙΙ) bioprobes as light-responsive theranostic agents

Optimizing white light emission in Dy(iii) complexes: impact of energy transfer from mono and bidentate ligands on luminescence

Complexes of dysprosium(iii) ions with 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione featuring various mono and bi-dentate neutral ligands have been prepared and thoroughly investigated. The synthesized complexes exhibit an octa-coordinated environment, achieved by stoichiometrically combining organic ligands and Dy(iii) ions. This octa-coordination environment of Dy(iii) ion was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and elemental analysis. Near-white light (NWL) is emitted when complexes were exposed to UV radiation, indicating a significant flow of energy from the sensitizing moieties towards the Dy(iii) ion. This NWL emission might have resulted due to a balance between the intensities corresponding to emission peaks at 480 nm (blue) and 575 nm (yellow) in Dy1-Dy3. Emission spectra recorded at different excitation wavelength were utilized to study the tunability of CIE color coordinates. In addition to their high thermal stability, the complexes display bipolar paramagnetic shifts in their NMR spectra. The 4F9/2 → 6H13/2 transition, contributing ∼62% of the total emission, stands out as a promising candidate for laser amplification due to its dominance in the emission spectra. Additionally, NWL emission observed in a solid Dy(iii) complex opens intriguing possibilities for its application in next-generation white-light emitting devices.

Exploring the role of neutral ligands in modulating the photoluminescence of samarium complexes with 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione

Four eight-coordinated luminescent samarium complexes of type [Sm(hfpd)3L2] and [Sm(hfpd)3L'] [where hfpd = 1,1,1,5,5,5-Hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione L = tri-octyl-phosphine oxide (TOPO) and L' = 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), neocuproine (neoc) and bathocuproine (bathoc) were synthesized via a stoichiometrically controlled approach. This allows for precise control over the stoichiometry of the complexes, leading to reproducible properties. This investigation focuses on understanding the impact of secondary ligands on the luminescent properties of these complexes. Infrared (IR) spectra provided information about the molecular structures, whereas 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra confirmed these structural details along with the coordination of ligands to trivalent Sm ion. The UV-vis spectra revealed the molar absorption coefficient and absorption bands associated with the hfpd ligand and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy demonstrated intense orange-red emission (648 nm relative to 4G5/2 → 6H9/2) from the complexes. The Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) triangles indicated that the complexes emitted warm orange red light with color coordinates (x, y) ranging from (0.62, 0.36) to (0.40, 0.27). The investigation of the band gap as well as color parameters confirms the utility of these complexes in displays and LEDs.

Quinoxaline derivatives: Recent discoveries and development strategies towards anticancer agents

Cancer is a leading cause of death and a major health problem worldwide. While many effective anticancer agents are available, most drugs currently on the market are not specific, raising issues like the common side effects of chemotherapy. However, recent research hold promises for the development of more efficient and safer anticancer drugs. Quinoxaline and its derivatives are becoming recognized as a novel class of chemotherapeutic agents with activity against different tumors. The present review compiles and discusses studies concerning the therapeutic potential of the anticancer activity of quinoxaline derivatives, covering articles published between January 2018 and January 2023.

Upconverting photons at the molecular scale with lanthanide complexes

In this perspective, we summarise the major milestones to date in the field of molecular upconversion (UC) with lanthanide based coordination complexes. This begins from the leap firstly from solid-state to nanoparticular regimes, and further down the scale to the molecular domain. We explain the mechanistic intricacies of each differing way of generating upconverted photons, critiquing them and outlining our views on the benefits and limitations of each process, also offering our perspective and opinion on where these new molecular UC edifices will take us. This nascent area is already rapidly expanding and improving, having increased in luminance efficiency by more than four orders of magnitude in the last decade: we conclude that the future is bright for molecular UC.

Recent Progress in Photonic Upconversion Materials for Organic Lanthanide Complexes

Organic lanthanide complexes have garnered significant attention in various fields due to their intriguing energy transfer mechanism, enabling the upconversion (UC) of two or more low-energy photons into high-energy photons. In comparison to lanthanide-doped inorganic nanoparticles, organic UC complexes hold great promise for biological delivery applications due to their advantageous properties of controllable size and composition. This review aims to provide a summary of the fundamental concept and recent developments of organic lanthanide-based UC materials based on different mechanisms. Furthermore, we also detail recent applications in the fields of bioimaging and solar cells. The developments and forthcoming challenges in organic lanthanide-based UC offer readers valuable insights and opportunities to engage in further research endeavors.

Organometallic Ir(III) complexes: post-synthetic modification, photophysical properties and binuclear complex construction

Two methods of post-synthetic modification (Suzuki coupling and CuAAC click-reaction) were applied to Ir(III) complexes [Ir(C^{^}N)₂N^{^}N]⁺ to provide the second highly selective donor site. One family of functionalized complexes was used to demonstrate the potential of post-synthetic modification for controlled construction of d-d and d-f binuclear complexes. The complexes obtained were characterized by CHN elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy, ESI mass-spectrometry, FTIR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. By means of XPS and NEXAFS spectroscopy the coordination of diimine donor site to the Ln(III) centre has been definitely confirmed. The photophysical properties of mono- and binuclear complexes were carefully investigated, and the evolution of luminescent characteristics during the formation of a system of connected metallocenters is also discussed. TDDFT calculations were used to describe the luminescence mechanism and to confirm the conclusions made on the basis of experimental data.

Luminescent Lanthanide Probes for Inorganic and Organic Phosphates

Inorganic and organic phosphates-including orthophosphate, nucleotides, and DNA-are some of the most fundamental anions in cellular biology, regulating numerous processes of both medical and environmental significance. The characteristic long lifetimes of emitting lanthanides, including the brighter europium(III) and terbium(III), make them ideally suited for the development of molecular probes for the detection of phosphates directly in complex aqueous media. Moreover, given their high oxophilicity and the exquisite sensitivity of their quantum yields to their hydration number, those luminescent lanthanides are perfect for the detection of phosphates. Herein we discuss the principles that have guided the recent developments of molecular probes selective for inorganic or organic phosphates and how these lanthanide complexes facilitate the study of numerous biological processes.

Metal-Based Linear Light Upconversion Implemented in Molecular Complexes: Challenges and Perspectives

The piling up of low-energy photons to produce light beams of higher energies while exploiting the nonlinear optical response of matter was conceived theoretically around 1930 and demonstrated 30 years later with the help of the first coherent ruby lasers. The vanishingly small efficacy of the associated light-upconversion process was rapidly overcome by the implementation of powerful successive absorptions of two photons using linear optics in materials that possess real intermediate excited states working as relays. In these systems, the key point requires a favorable competition between the rate constant of the excited-state absorption (ESA) and the relaxation rate of the intermediate excited state, the lifetime of which should be thus maximized. Chemists and physicists therefore selected long-lived intermediate excited states found (i) in trivalent lanthanide cations doped into ionic solids or into nanoparticles (^2S+1L_J spectroscopic levels) or (ii) in polyaromatic molecules (triplet states) as the logical activators for designing light upconverters using linear optics. Their global efficiency has been stepwise optimized during the past five decades by using indirect intermolecular sensitization mechanisms (energy transfer upconversion = ETU) combined with large absorption cross sections.The induction of light-upconversion operating in a single discrete entity at the molecular level is limited to metal-based units and remained a challenge for a long time because coordination complexes possess high-frequency oscillators incompatible with the existence of (i) scales of accessible excited relays with long lifetimes and (ii) final high-energy emissive levels with noticeable intrinsic quantum yields. In contrast to intermolecular energy transfer processes operating in metal-based doped solids, which require statistical models, the combination of sensitizers and activators within the same molecule limits energy transfers to easily tunable intramolecular processes with first-order kinetic rate constants. Their successful programming in a trinuclear CrErCr complex in 2011 led to the first detectable near-infrared to green light upconversion induced in a molecular unit under reasonable excitation intensity. The subsequent progress in the modeling and understanding of the key factors controlling metal-based light upconversion operating in molecular complexes led to a burst of various designs exploiting different mechanisms, excited-state absorption (ESA), energy transfer upconversion (ETU), cooperative luminescence (CL), and cooperative upconversion (CU), which are discussed in this Account.

Targeted delivery of paclitaxel by NL2 peptide-functionalized on core-shell LaVO4: Eu3@ poly (levodopa) luminescent nanoparticles

Targeted drug delivery enhances drug efficiency and selectivity without affecting normal cells. Luminescent nanoparticles can be used for tumor imaging as well as selective tumor targeting for drug delivery. In this research, LaVO4 :Eu3+ was synthesized, the luminescent nanocrystal was coated by surface polymerization of levodopa in the presence of Paclitaxel (PTX), and then NL2 peptide was coupled on the surface of polymer-coated luminescent nanoparticles. Next, the capability of the modified drug was examined by in vitro and in vivo experiments. MTT assay on SK-BR-3 cell line (as breast cancer cells) and fluorescent microscopy results indicate that this modification decreases significantly drug toxicity and increases its selectivity. In addition, in vivo experiments confirm more capability of the NL2-functionalized nanocomposite for reducing tumor size, drug distribution in the body, and more aggregation of PTX in tumor tissue. Overall, it is concluded that tumor imaging is possible using luminescent LaVO4 :Eu3+ core and NL2 peptide increases significantly the specificity of PTX in combination with a functionalized luminescent polymeric carrier.

Luminescent lanthanide(III) complexes of DTPA-bis(amido-phenyl-terpyridine) for bioimaging and phototherapeutic applications

We report here a series of coordinatively-saturated and thermodynamically stable luminescent [Ln(dtntp)(H₂O)] [Ln(III) = Eu (1), Tb (2), Gd (3), Sm (4) and Dy (5)] complexes using an aminophenyl-terpyridine appended-DTPA (dtntp) chelating ligand as cell imaging and photocytotoxic agents. The N,N″-bisamide derivative of H₅DTPA named as dtntp is based on 4'-(4-aminophenyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine conjugated to diethylenetriamine-N,N',N″-pentaacetic acid. The structure, physicochemical properties, detailed photophysical aspects, interaction with DNA and serum proteins, and photocytotoxicity were studied. The intrinsic luminescence of Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes due to f → f transitions used to evaluate their cellular uptake and distribution in cancer cells. The solid-state structure of [Eu(dtntp)(DMF)] (1·DMF) shows a discrete mononuclear molecule with nine-coordinated {EuN₃O₆} distorted tricapped-trigonal prism (TTP) coordination geometry around the Eu(III). The {EuN₃O₆} core results from three nitrogen atoms and three carboxylate oxygen atoms, and two carbonyl oxygen atoms of the amide groups of dtntp ligand. The ninth coordination site is occupied by an oxygen atom of DMF as a solvent from crystallization. The designed probes have two aromatic pendant phenyl-terpyridine (Ph-tpy) moieties as photo-sensitizing antennae to impart the desirable optical properties for cellular imaging and photocytotoxicity. The photostability, coordinative saturation, and energetically rightly poised triplet states of dtntp ligand allow the efficient energy transfer (ET) from Ph-tpy to the emissive excited states of the Eu(III)/Tb(III), makes them luminescent cellular imaging probes. The Ln(III) complexes show significant binding tendency to DNA (K ~ 10⁴ M^-1), and serum proteins (BSA and HSA) (K ~ 10⁵ M^-1). The luminescent Eu(III) (1) and Tb(III) (2) complexes were utilized for cellular internalization and cytotoxicity studies due to their optimal photophysical properties. The cellular uptake studies using fluorescence imaging displayed intracellular (cytosolic and nuclear) localization in cancer cells. The complexes 1 and 2 displayed significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells. These results offer a modular design strategy with further scope to utilize appended N,N,N-donor tpy moiety for developing light-responsive luminescent Ln(III) bioprobes for theranostic applications.

Photocytotoxicity of Thiophene- and Bithiophene-Dipicolinato Luminescent Lanthanide Complexes

New thiophene-dipicolinato-based compounds, K₂nTdpa (n = 1, 2), were isolated. Their anions are sensitizers of lanthanide ion (Ln^III) luminescence and singlet oxygen generation (¹O₂). Emission in the visible and near-infrared regions was observed for the Ln^III complexes with efficiencies (ϕ^Ln) ϕ^Eu = 33% and ϕ^Yb = 0.31% for 1Tdpa^2- and ϕ^Yb = 0.07% for 2Tdpa^2-. The latter does not sensitize Eu^III emission. Fluorescence imaging of HeLa live cells incubated with K₃[Eu(1Tdpa)₃] indicates that the complex permeates the cell membrane and localizes in the mitochondria. All complexes generate ¹O₂ in solution with efficiencies (ϕO12) as high as 13 and 23% for the Gd^III complexes of 1Tdpa^2- and 2Tdpa^2-, respectively. [Ln(nTdpa)₃]^3- (n = 1, 2) are phototoxic to HeLa cells when irradiated with UV light with IC₅₀ values as low as 4.2 μM for [Gd(2Tdpa)₃]^3- and 91.8 μM for [Eu(1Tdpa)₃]^3-. Flow cytometric analyses indicate both apoptotic and necrotic cell death pathways.

DNA Intercalating Near-Infrared Luminescent Lanthanide Complexes Containing Dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz) Ligands: Synthesis, Crystal Structures, Stability, Luminescence Properties and CT-DNA Interaction

In order to create near-infrared (NIR) luminescent lanthanide complexes suitable for DNA-interaction, novel lanthanide dppz complexes with general formula [Ln(NO₃)₃(dppz)₂] (Ln = Nd³⁺, Er³⁺ and Yb³⁺; dppz = dipyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c]phenazine) were synthesized, characterized and their luminescence properties were investigated. In addition, analogous compounds with other lanthanide ions (Ln = Ce³⁺, Pr³⁺, Sm³⁺, Eu³⁺, Tb³⁺, Dy³⁺, Ho³⁺, Tm³⁺, Lu³⁺) were prepared. All complexes were characterized by IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the complexes (Ln = La³⁺, Ce³⁺, Pr³⁺, Nd³⁺, Eu³⁺, Er³⁺, Yb³⁺, Lu³⁺) showed that the lanthanide’s first coordination sphere can be described as a bicapped dodecahedron, made up of two bidentate dppz ligands and three bidentate-coordinating nitrate anions. Efficient energy transfer was observed from the dppz ligand to the lanthanide ion (Nd³⁺, Er³⁺ and Yb³⁺), while relatively high luminescence lifetimes were detected for these complexes. In their excitation spectra, the maximum of the strong broad band is located at around 385 nm and this wavelength was further used for excitation of the chosen complexes. In their emission spectra, the following characteristic NIR emission peaks were observed: for a) Nd³⁺: ⁴F_3/2 → ⁴I_9/2 (870.8 nm), ⁴F_3/2 → ⁴I_11/2 (1052.7 nm) and ⁴F_3/2 → ⁴I_13/2 (1334.5 nm); b) Er³⁺: ⁴I_13/2 → ⁴I_15/2 (1529.0 nm) c) Yb³⁺: ²F_5/2 → ²F_7/2 (977.6 nm). While its low triplet energy level is ideally suited for efficient sensitization of Nd³⁺ and Er³⁺, the dppz ligand is considered not favorable as a sensitizer for most of the visible emitting lanthanide ions, due to its low-lying triplet level, which is too low for the accepting levels of most visible emitting lanthanides. Furthermore, the DNA intercalation ability of the [Nd(NO₃)₃(dppz)₂] complex with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) was confirmed using fluorescence spectroscopy.

Luminescent EuIIIand TbIIIbimetallic complexes of N,N′-heterocyclic bases and tolfenamic acid: structures, photophysical aspects and biological activity

The isostructural bimetallic luminescent Eu^IIIand Tb^IIIdimers containing N,N′-heterocyclic bases and tolfenamic acid as a bridging ligands were evaluated for their structures, cellular imaging capability and photocytotoxicity.

Visible and NIR emitting Yb(iii) and Er(iii) complexes sensitized by β-diketonates and phenanthroline derivatives

Long lifetimes and high quantum yields are obtained in the reported complexes.
