A potentiometric and voltammetric sensor based on polypyrrole film with electrochemically induced recognition sites for detection of silver ion

In Situ Engineering of Conducting Polymer Nanocomposites at Liquid/Liquid Interfaces: A Perspective on Fundamentals to Technological Significance

The conducting polymers have continuously been hybridized with their counterparts to overcome the intrinsic functional limitations compared to the metallic or inorganic analogs. Remarkably, the liquid/liquid interface-assisted methods represent an efficient and facile route for developing fully tunable metamaterials for various applications. The spontaneous adsorption of nanostructures at a quasi-two-dimensional interface is energetically favorable due to the reduction in interfacial tension, interfacial area, and interfacial energy (Helmholtz free energy). This Perspective highlights the fundamentals of nanostructure adsorption leading to hierarchical architecture generation at the interface from an experimentalist's point of view. Thereafter, the essential applications of the conducting polymer/nanocomposites synthesized at the interface emphasize the capability of the interface to tune functional materials. This Perspective also summarizes the future challenges and the use of the known fundamental aspects in overcoming the functional limitations of polymer/nanomaterial composites and also provides some future research directions.

A visible BODIPY-based sensor for 'Naked-Eye' recognition of Ag+ and its application on test paper strips

In this study, a novel, highly sensitive fluorescent sensor (E)-2-((2-(benzo[d] thiazol-2-yl) quinolin-8-yl) oxy)-N'-(4-(5, 5-difluoro-1, 3, 7, 9-tetramethyl-5H-4λ4, 5λ4-dipyrrolo [1, 2-c:2', 1'-f] [1, 3, 2] diazaborinin-10-yl) benzylidene) acetohydrazide (TQB) was developed for dual mode of Ag+ detection (colorimetric/fluorescence), and its structural and spectral properties were characterized by 1H NMR, ESI-MS, X-ray, ultraviolet and fluorescence photometry. It is found that TQB could specifically and efficiently identify Ag+ among many other metal ions in CH3OH/H2O (7:3 v/v, pH = 7.23) buffer. The maximum absorption wavelength of TQB is red-shifted while its fluorescence is quenched with a quenching rate of 88.7%. The energy difference between TQB and TQB-Ag+ complex was calculated by DFT, and the applicability of TQB was verified by paper strip test. In addition, TQB has been successfully applied to the determination of Ag+ in real water samples with good reversibility and recoveries.

Self-assembly of random networks of zirconium-doped manganese oxide nanoribbons and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) flakes at the water/chloroform interface

Owing to their magnificent chemical and physical properties, transition metal-based heterostructures are potential materials for applications ranging from point-of-care diagnostics to sustainable energy technologies. The cryptomelane-type octahedral molecular sieves (K-OMS-2) are extensively studied porous materials with a hollandite (2 × 2 tunnel of dimensions 4.6 × 4.6 Å2) structure susceptible to the isovalent substitution of metal cations at the framework of MnO6 octahedral chains. Here we report a facile in situ synthesis of framework-level zirconium (Zr)-doped K-OMS-2 nanoribbons in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanoflakes at a water/chloroform interface at ambient conditions. An oxidant system of KMnO4 and ZrOCl2·8H2O initiated the polymerisation at temperatures ranging from 5° to 50 °C. The lattice distortions arising from the framework-level substitution of Mn4+ by Zr4+ in the K-OMS-2 structure were evidenced with powder X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption-desorption studies. Transmission electron microscopic and mapping images confirmed that PEDOT/Zr-K-OMS-2 comprises a highly crystalline random network of two-dimensional PEDOT flakes and Zr-doped K-OMS-2 nanoribbons. In this regard, the proposed interfacial strategy affirms an in situ method for the morphological tuning of heterostructures on polymer supports at low temperatures.

Dual-emissive ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor based on multi-nanomaterials for Ag+ determination in lake water

In this study, a sensitive ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor was constructed using a facile one-pot method by encapsulating carbon dots (CDs) and cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) into the pore cavities of a metal-organic framework (ZIF-8). In this nanosensor (CD/CdTe QD@ZIF-8), the fluorescence attributed to CdTe QDs was quenched by silver ions (Ag⁺), and the fluorescence intensity of CDs did not change. The introduction of ZIF-8 into the system can not only adsorb Ag⁺ but also easily separate CDs and CdTe QDs from the matrix. The developed CD/CdTe QD@ZIF-8 composite used as a ratiometric fluorescent probe exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity towards Ag⁺. The working linear range was 0.1-20 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.49 nM. Finally, the proposed nanosensor was applied to determine Ag⁺ in lake water with satisfactory results.

Interface-assisted synthesis: a gateway to effective nanostructure tuning of conducting polymers

The interface-assisted polymerization technique can be viewed as a powerful emerging tool for the synthesis of conducting polymers (CPs) on a large scale. Contrary to other bulk or single-phase polymerization techniques, interface-assisted synthesis strategies offer effective nanostructure control in a confined two-dimensional (2-D) space. This review focuses on the types of interfaces, mechanism at the interface, advantages and future perspectives of the interfacial polymerization in comparison to conventional polymerization techniques. Hence, the primary focus is on briefing the different types of the chemical methods of polymerization, followed by uniqueness in the reaction dynamics of interface polymerization. The classification of interfaces into four types (liquid/solid, gas/liquid, liquid/liquid, and gas/solid) is based on the versatility and underlying mechanistic pathway of the polymerization of each type. The role of interface in tuning the nanostructure of CPs and the performance evaluation of pristine CPs based on the electrical conductivity are also discussed. Finally, the future outlook of this emerging field is discussed and proposed in detail through some multifunctional applications of synthesized conducting polymers.

Development a spectrofluorometric micellar supported encapsulated method for micro determination of silver ion using new 2,6-disubstituted pyridine derivatives

Herein, the presented manuscript provides for an extensive spectrofluorimetric method for micro determination of silver ion. This established method based on the use of the three synthesized 2,6-disubstituted pyridine derivatives (R1, R2 and R3) through exploiting their high fluorescence emission property. A noticeable effect on the fluorescence emission of the reagents after chelation with Ag (I) was monitored. Its noteworthy that the sensitivity and stability of this method was increased by using micellar medium. After chelation with Ag(I), the fluorescence emission of the ligands R1 and R2 were effectively quenched in a regular manner by increasing Ag(I) concentration. In contrast, an increase of the fluorescence intensity for reagent R3 after addition of Ag (I) was observed. The solvatochromism for all reagents under investigation was examined in different solvent. Furthermore, the chelation between Ag(I) and the and designed pyridine reagents was assessed spectrophotometrically. The optimum conditions for the most stable complexes which give a high signal difference were explored and well-determined. The linear range for determination of silver ion were determined and found to be 0.18-1.16, 0.06-0.59 and 0.18-1.43 μg mL^-1 for R1, R2 and R3, respectively. The statistical analytical parameters such as LOD, LOQ, SD of slope, SD of intercept and RDS were calculated. In addition, the developed methods were efficaciously applied for determination of Ag(I) in some water samples. These selective complexation methods found to be in good precision compared to official and reported method as revealed F-test.

A novel fluorescent sensor based on electrosynthesized benzene sulfonic acid-doped polypyrrole for determination of Pb(II) and Cu(II)

To develop conducting organic polymers (COPs) as luminescent sensors for determination of toxic heavy metals, a new benzene sulfonic acid-doped polypyrrole (PPy-BSA) thin film was electrochemically prepared by cyclic voltammetry (CV) on flexible indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode in aqueous solution. PPy-BSA film was characterized by FTIR spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The optical properties of PPy-BSA were investigated by ultraviolet (UV)-visible absorption and fluorescence spectrometry in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) diluted solutions. PPy-BSA fluorescence spectra were strongly quenched upon increasing copper(II) ion (Cu²⁺ ) and lead(II) ion (Pb²⁺ ) concentrations in aqueous medium, and linear Stern-Volmer relationships were obtained, which indicated the existence of a main dynamic fluorescence quenching mechanism. BSA-PPy sensor showed a high sensitivity for detection of both metallic ions, Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺ , with very low limit of detection values of 3.1 and 18.0 nM, respectively. The proposed quenching-fluorimetric sensor might be applied to the determination of traces of toxic heavy metallic ions in water samples.

Composites Based on Conducting Polymers and Carbon Nanomaterials for Heavy Metal Ion Sensing (Review)

Current review signifies recent trends and challenges in the development of electrochemical sensors based on organic conducting polymers (OCPs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and their composites for the determination of trace heavy metal ions in water are reviewed. OCPs and CNTs have some suitable properties, such as good electrical, mechanical, chemical and structural properties as well as environmental stability, etc. However, some of these materials still have significant limitations toward selective and sensitive detection of trace heavy metal ions. To overcome the limitations of these individual materials, OCPs/CNTs composites were developed. Application of OCPs/CNTs composite and their novel properties for the adsorption and detection of heavy metal ions outlined and discussed in this review.

From Electrochemical Biosensors to Biomimetic Sensors Based on Molecularly Imprinted Polymers in Environmental Determination of Heavy Metals

Recent work relevant to heavy metal determination by inhibition-enzyme electrochemical biosensors and by selected biomimetic sensors based on molecularly imprinted polymers has been reviewed. General features and peculiar aspects have been evidenced. The replace of biological component by artificial receptors promises higher selectivity and stability, while biosensors keep their capability of producing an integrated response directly related to biological toxicity of the samples.

A microcantilever-based silver ion sensor using DNA-functionalized gold nanoparticles as a mass amplifier

Silver ions have been used to sterilize many products, however, it has recently been demonstrated that silver ions can be toxic. This toxicity has been studied over many years with the lethal concentration at 10 μM. Silver ions can accumulate through the food chain, causing serious health problems in many species. Hence, there is a need for a commercially available silver ion sensor, with high detection sensitivity. In this work, we develop an ultra-sensitive silver ion sensor platform, using cytosine based DNA and gold nanoparticles as the mass amplifier. We achieve a lower detection limit for silver ions of 10 pM; this detection limit is one million times lower than the toxic concentration. Using our sensor platform we examine highly selective characteristics of other typical ions in water from natural sources. Furthermore, our sensor platform is able to detect silver ions in a real practical sample of commercially available drinking water. Our sensor platform, which we have termed a 'MAIS' (mass amplifier ion sensor), with a simple detection procedure, high sensitivity, selectivity and real practical applicability has shown potential as an early toxicity assessment of silver ions in the environment.

Hemin/G-quadruplex DNAzyme nanowires amplified luminol electrochemiluminescence system and its application in sensing silver ions

Herein, a DNA biosensor with a hemin/G-quadruplex DNAzyme amplified luminol electrochemiluminescence (ECL) system was constructed for sensing silver ions (Ag⁺).

Modified electrodes used for electrochemical detection of metal ions in environmental analysis

Heavy metal pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems, and regulations are becoming stricter. Many efforts have been made to develop sensors for monitoring heavy metals in the environment. This review aims at presenting the different label-free strategies used to develop electrochemical sensors for the detection of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic etc. The first part of this review will be dedicated to stripping voltammetry techniques, on unmodified electrodes (mercury, bismuth or noble metals in the bulk form), or electrodes modified at their surface by nanoparticles, nanostructures (CNT, graphene) or other innovative materials such as boron-doped diamond. The second part will be dedicated to chemically modified electrodes especially those with conducting polymers. The last part of this review will focus on bio-modified electrodes. Special attention will be paid to strategies using biomolecules (DNA, peptide or proteins), enzymes or whole cells.

Pyrene pyridine-conjugate as Ag selective fluorescent chemosensor

A new pyrene pyridine conjugate (PPC) has been developed as a selective fluorescent sensor for Ag⁺ion.

Elaboration of ammonia gas sensors based on electrodeposited polypyrrole--cobalt phthalocyanine hybrid films

The electrochemical incorporation of a sulfonated cobalt phthalocyanine (sCoPc) in conducting polypyrrole (PPy) was done, in the presence or absence of LiClO4, in order to use the resulting hybrid material for the sensing of ammonia. After electrochemical deposition, the morphological features and structural properties of polypyrrole/phthalocyanine hybrid films were investigated and compared to those of polypyrrole films. A gas sensor consisting in platinum microelectrodes arrays was fabricated using silicon microtechnologies, and the polypyrrole and polypyrrole/phthalocyanine films were electrochemically deposited on the platinum microelectrodes arrays of this gas sensor. When exposed to ammonia, polymer-based gas sensors exhibited a decrease in conductance due to the electron exchange between ammonia and sensitive polymer-based layer. The characteristics of the gas sensors (response time, response amplitude, reversibility) were studied for ammonia concentrations varying from 1 ppm to 100 ppm. Polypyrrole/phthalocyanine films exhibited a high sensitivity and low detection limit to ammonia as well as a fast and reproducible response at room temperature. The response to ammonia exposition of polypyrrole films was found to be strongly enhanced thanks to the incorporation of the phthalocyanine in the polypyrrole matrix.

Highly sensitive and selective fluorescent chemosensor for Ag+ based on a coumarin-Se2N chelating conjugate

A highly sensitive and selective fluorescent chemosensor SC1 for Ag(+) based on a coumarin-Se(2)N chelating conjugate has been synthesized and characterized. Due to inhibiting a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) quenching pathway, a fluorescent enhancement factor of 4-fold is observed under the binding of the Ag(+) cation to the chemosensor SC1 with a detection limit down to the 10(-8) M range.

A Review of Dye Incorporated Conducting Polymers Application as Sensors and in Solar Cells

Dye doped polymers (DCPs) has a wide application based on their optical and electrochemical properties. Dye sensitisation of conducting polymeric materials has gained a wide theoretical interest and practical application in sensors and solar cell technology. This review gives a broad summary on synthesis, the effect of the presence of dye in the polymer (properties, structure and conductivity), application in sensors and dye sensitised solar cells. Different sensing modes are also discussed as well as the effects of post polymer modification with dyes in sensors. In solar cells, the role of DCPs in light harvesting is summarised using examples. Finally, perspectives and the advantages of dye modification or sensitisation of polymers in sensors and solar cells are included.

Silver sorption on acrylic copolymers functionalized with amines. Equilibrium and kinetic studies

The sorption capacity of three weak base ion exchangers based on acrylic copolymers functionalized with ethylenediamine, triethylenetetramine and N, N- dimethylamino propylamine for Ag(I) ions was evaluated. Adsorption experiments were carried out by batch method. The effect of pH, crosslinking degree of copolymers, amount of sorbent, initial ion concentration, contact time and temperature was studied. The parameters which characterize the retention process were estimated using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, the best fitting being for the first model. Kinetic data were fitted to pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion models. Experimental data were in good agreement with the pseudo second order.

Conducting polymers in chemical sensors and arrays

The review covers main applications of conducting polymers in chemical sensors and biosensors. The first part is focused on intrinsic and induced receptor properties of conducting polymers, such as pH sensitivity, sensitivity to inorganic ions and organic molecules as well as sensitivity to gases. Induced receptor properties can be also formed by molecularly imprinted polymerization or by immobilization of biological receptors. Immobilization strategies are reviewed in the second part. The third part is focused on applications of conducting polymers as transducers and includes usual optical (fluorescence, SPR, etc.) and electrical (conductometric, amperometric, potentiometric, etc.) transducing techniques as well as organic chemosensitive semiconductor devices. An assembly of stable sensing structures requires strong binding of conducting polymers to solid supports. These aspects are discussed in the next part. Finally, an application of combinatorial synthesis and high-throughput analysis to the development and optimization of sensing materials is described.

Electrochemical Sensors Based on Organic Conjugated Polymers

Organic conjugated polymers (conducting polymers) have emerged as potentialcandidates for electrochemical sensors. Due to their straightforward preparation methods,unique properties, and stability in air, conducting polymers have been applied to energystorage, electrochemical devices, memory devices, chemical sensors, and electrocatalysts.Conducting polymers are also known to be compatible with biological molecules in aneutral aqueous solution. Thus, these are extensively used in the fabrication of accurate,fast, and inexpensive devices, such as biosensors and chemical sensors in the medicaldiagnostic laboratories. Conducting polymer-based electrochemical sensors and biosensorsplay an important role in the improvement of public health and environment because rapiddetection, high sensitivity, small size, and specificity are achievable for environmentalmonitoring and clinical diagnostics. In this review, we summarized the recent advances inconducting polymer-based electrochemical sensors, which covers chemical sensors(potentiometric, voltammetric, amperometric) and biosensors (enzyme based biosensors,immunosensors, DNA sensors).
