A Preliminary Assessment of the ‘Greenness’ of Halide-Free Ionic Liquids—An MCDA Based Approach. Processes (Basel) 2021. Abstract
With the growing interests in non-aqueous media for diversified applications, ionic liquids (ILs) are frequently considered as green solvents. While the environmental, health, and safety assessments of the commercially developed ILs and their ‘greenness’ status are in debate, research focus is shifting towards the application of halide-free ILs for diversified applications. To clarify the situation on their greenness, and to understand if they really possess safe characteristics, we performed an initial assessment of 193 halide free ionic liquids composed of four groups of cations (imidazolium, pyridinium, pyrrodilinium, piperidinum) and 5 groups of anions (acetate, propionate, butyrate, alkanesulfonates, alkylsulfates). The ‘Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solutions’ (TOPSIS), a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) tool that allows ranking many alternatives is applied by carrying out the assessment against 14 criteria that includes hazard statements, precautionary statements, biodegradability, and toxicity towards different organisms. The ranking results obtained against the set of criteria considered show that the halide free ILs placed between recommended polar solvents: methanol and ethanol can be considered to be safer alternatives in terms of ‘greenness’. The study in this work provides an initial assessment of the halide-free ionic liquids evaluated against 14 criteria in terms of their safety characteristics (“green character”) using the MCDA-TOPSIS approach.

Abstract
We conduct a comparative study of conductivity and diffusion coefficient of two dicationic ionic liquids (3,3'-(octane-1,8-diyl)bis(1-ethyl-3-imidazolium) bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([IMCI][TFSI], S1) and 3,3'-(2,2'-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(ethane-2,1-diyl))bis(1-ethyl-3-imidazolium) bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([IMOI][TFSI], S2)) at various temperatures. The diffusion coefficients of cation and anion in ionic liquids are determined by using pulse gradient spin-echo nuclear magnetic resonance method. S2 shows lower viscosity, higher conductivity, and higher diffusion coefficient than those of S1. Moreover, the influence of polyethyleneglycol (PEG200, Mw = 200) addition in PEG200/IL binary solutions is investigated. PEG200/S1 binary solutions show lower viscosity, higher conductivity, and higher diffusion coefficient than those of neat S1. The experimental molar conductivity (Λ) of neat IL and PEG200/IL binary solutions is lower than that of the calculated molar conductivity (ΛNMR ) from pulse gradient spin-echo nuclear magnetic resonance method at various temperatures, indicating that not all the diffusion species belong to the ionic conduction. In other words, NMR diffusion measurements comprise charged and paired (without charge) ions. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
Because of the increasing number of electric vehicles, there is an urgent need for effective recycling technologies to recapture the significant amount of valuable metals contained in spent lithium-ion batteries (LiBs). Previous studies have indicated, however, that Al and cathode materials were quite difficult to separate due to the strong binding force supplied by the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), which was employed to bind cathode materials and Al foil. This research devoted to seek a new method of melting the PVDF binder with heated ionic liquid (IL) to separate Al foil and cathode materials from the spent high-power LiBs. Theoretical analysis based on Fourier's law was adopted to determine the heat transfer mechanism of cathode material and to examine the relationship between heating temperature and retention time. All the experimental and theoretic results show that peel-off rate of cathode materials from Al foil could reach 99% when major process parameters were controlled at 180°C heating temperature, 300 rpm agitator rotation, and 25 min retention time. The results further imply that the application of IL for recycling Al foil and cathode materials from spent high-power LiBs is highly efficient, regardless of the application source of the LiBs or the types of cathode material. This study endeavors to make a contribution to an environmentally sound and economically viable solution to the challenge of spent LiB recycling.

This work includes specific basic characterization of synthesized glycine-based Ionic Liquid (IL) [QuatGly-OEt][EtOSO3] by NMR, elementary analysis and water content. Thermophysical properties such as density, ρ, viscosity, η, refractive index, n, and conductivity, κ, for the binary mixture of [QuatGly-OEt][EtOSO3] with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) [Mw = 200] are measured over the whole composition range. The temperature dependence of density and dynamic viscosity for neat [QuatGly-OEt][EtOSO3] and its binary mixture can be described by an empirical polynomial equation and by the Vogel-Tammann-Fucher (VTF) equation, respectively. The thermal expansion coefficient of the ILs is ascertained using the experimental density results, and the excess volume expansivity is evaluated. The negative values of excess molar volume for the mixture indicate the ion-dipole interactions and packing between IL and PEG oligomer. The results of binary excess property (VmE ) and deviations (Δη, Δxn, ΔΨn, ΔxR, and ΔΨR) are discussed in terms of molecular interactions and molecular structures in the binary mixture.

Abstract
A systematic study of the effect of composition on the thermo-physical properties of the binary mixtures of 1-methyl-3-pentyl imidazolium hexafluorophosphate [MPI][PF6] with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) [Mw = 400] is presented. The excess molar volume, refractive index deviation, viscosity deviation, and surface tension deviation values were calculated from these experimental density, ρ, refractive index, n, viscosity, η, and surface tension, γ, over the whole concentration range, respectively. The excess molar volumes are negative and continue to become increasingly negative with increasing temperature; whereas the viscosity and surface tension deviation are negative and become less negative with increasing temperature. The surface thermodynamic functions, such as surface entropy, enthalpy, as well as standard molar entropy, Parachor, and molar enthalpy of vaporization for pure ionic liquid, have been derived from the temperature dependence of the surface tension values.
