Multiscale electrochemical analysis of the corrosion of titanium and nitinol for implant applications

Cytotoxicity of Metal Ions Released from NiTi and Stainless Steel Orthodontic Appliances, Part 1: Surface Morphology and Ion Release Variations

Despite numerous studies on ion release from orthodontic appliances, no clear conclusions can be drawn due to complex interrelations of multiple factors. Therefore, as the first part of a comprehensive investigation of cytotoxicity of eluted ions, the objective of this study was to analyze four parts of a fixed orthodontic appliance. Specifically, NiTi archwires and stainless steel (SS) brackets, bands, and ligatures were immersed in artificial saliva and studied for morphological and chemical changes after 3-, 7-, and 14-day immersion, using the SEM/EDX technique. Ion release profiles were analyzed for all eluted ions using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results demonstrated dissimilar surface morphologies among parts of the fixed appliance, due to variations in manufacturing processes. The onset of pitting corrosion was observed for the SS brackets and bands in the as-received state. Protective oxide layers were not observed on any of the parts, but adherent layers developed on SS brackets and ligatures during immersion. Salt precipitation, mainly KCl, was also observed. ICP-MS proved to be more sensitive than SEM/EDX and exhibited results undetected by SEM/EDX. Ion release was an order-of-magnitude higher for SS bands compared to other parts, which was attributed to manufacturing procedure (welding). Ion release did not correlate with surface roughness.

Metallic Dental Implants Wear Mechanisms, Materials, and Manufacturing Processes: A Literature Review

OBJECTIVES

From the treatment of damaged teeth to replacing missing teeth, dental biomaterials cover the scientific interest of many fields. Dental biomaterials are one of the implants whose effective life depends vastly on their material and manufacturing techniques. The purpose of this review is to summarize the important aspects for metallic dental implants from biomedical, mechanical and materials science perspectives. The review article will focus on five major aspects as mentioned below. Tooth anatomy: Maximizing the implant performance depends on proper understanding of human tooth anatomy and the failure behavior of the implants. Major parts from tooth anatomy including saliva characteristics are explored in this section. Wear mechanisms: The prominent wear mechanisms having a high impact on dental wear are abrasive, adhesive, fatigue and corrosion wear. To imitate the physiological working condition of dental implants, reports on the broad range of mastication force and various composition of artificial saliva have been included in this section, which can affect the tribo-corrosion behavior of dental implants. Dental implants classifications: The review paper includes a dedicated discussion on major dental implants types and their details for better understanding their applicability and characteristics. Implant materials: As of today, the most established dental implant materials are SS316L, cobalt chrome alloy and titanium. Detailed discussion on their material properties, microstructures, phase transformations and chemical compositions have been discussed here. Manufacturing techniques: In terms of different production methods, the lost wax casting method as traditional manufacturing is considered. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) and Directed Energy Deposition (DED) as additive manufacturing techniques (AM) have been discussed. For AM, the relationships between process-property-performance details have been explored briefly. The effectiveness of different manufacturing techniques was compared based on porosity distribution, mechanical and biomechanical properties.

SUMMARY

Despite having substantial research available on dental implants, there is a lack of systematic reviews to present a holistic viewpoint combining state-of-the-art from biomedical, mechanical, materials science and manufacturing perspectives. This review article attempts to combine a wide variety of analyzing approaches from those interdisciplinary fields to deliver deeper insights to researchers both in academia and industry to develop next-generation dental implants.

Atomic Layer Deposition of aTiO2 Layer on Nitinol and Its Corrosion Resistance in a Simulated Body Fluid

Nitinol is a group of nearly equiatomic alloys composed of nickel and titanium, which was developed in the 1970s. Its properties, such as superelasticity and Shape Memory Effect, have enabled its use, especially for biomedical purposes. Due to the fact that Nitinol exhibits good corrosion resistance in a chloride environment, an unusual combination of strength and ductility, a high tendency for self-passivation, high fatigue strength, low Young’s modulus and excellent biocompatibility, its use is still increasing. In this research, Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) experiments were performed on a continuous vertical cast (CVC) NiTi rod (made in-house) and on commercial Nitinol as the control material, which was already in the rolled state. The ALD deposition of the TiO2 layer was accomplished in a Beneq TFS 200 system at 250 °C. The pulsing times for TiCl4 and H2O were 250 ms and 180 ms, followed by appropriate purge cycles with nitrogen (3 s after the TiCl4 and 2 s after the H2O pulses). After 1100 repeated cycles of ALD depositing, the average thickness of the TiO2 layer for the CVC NiTi rod was 52.2 nm and for the commercial Nitinol, it was 51.7 nm, which was confirmed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) using Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. The behaviour of the CVC NiTi and commercial Nitinol with and without the TiO2 layer was investigated in a simulated body fluid at body temperature (37 °C) to explain their corrosion resistance. Potentiodynamic polarisation measurements showed that the lowest corrosion current density (0.16 μA/cm2) and the wider passive region were achieved by the commercial NiTi with TiO2. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy measurements revealed that the CVC NiTi rod and the commercial Nitinol have, for the first 48 h of immersion, only resistance through the oxide layer, as a consequence of the thin and compact layer. On the other hand, the TiO2/CVC NiTi rod and TiO2/commercial Nitinol had resistances through the oxide and porous layers the entire immersion time since the TiO2 layer was formatted on the surfaces.

Environmental fatigue of superelastic NiTi wire with two surface finishes

Surface finish of NiTi is widely perceived to affect its biocompatibility and corrosion fatigue performance. The aim of this work was to find out, whether a carefully engineered surface oxide shows any beneficial effect over electropolished surface on the fatigue performance of superelastic NiTi wire mechanically cycled in simulated biofluid. Series of corrosion and environmental fatigue tensile tests was performed on superelastic NiTi wire with two different surface finishes frequently used in medical device industry. Open Circuit Potential reflecting the activity of chemical reactions on the surface of the wire cycled in electrochemical cell was continuously monitored during the fatigue tests. Microcracks at the surface of the fatigued NiTi wires were characterized by SEM and TEM. It was found that the carefully engineered 70 nm thick TiO₂ oxide provides the NiTi wire with similar level of protection against the static corrosion as the less than 10 nm thin natural oxide on the electropolished wire and that it does not have any positive effect on its performance in environmental fatigue tests, whatsoever. On the contrary, the wire covered by the carefully engineered 70 nm thick TiO₂ oxide displayed systematically poorer fatigue performance upon tensile cycling under specific critical loading conditions (strain amplitude <0.5% at large mean strains 1-7%).

Improvement of the Corrosion Resistance of Biomedical Zr-Ti Alloys Using a Thermal Oxidation Treatment

Binary Zr-Ti alloys spontaneously develop a tenacious and compact oxide layer when their fresh surface is exposed either to air or to aqueous environments. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis of Zr-45Ti, Zr-25Ti, and Zr-5Ti exposed to simulated physiological solutions at 37 °C evidences the formation of a non-sealing bilayer oxide film that accounts for the corrosion resistance of the materials. Unfortunately, these oxide layers may undergo breakdown and stable pitting corrosion regimes at anodic potentials within the range of those experienced in the human body under stress and surgical conditions. Improved corrosion resistance has been achieved by prior treatment of these alloys using thermal oxidation in air. EIS was employed to measure the corrosion resistance of the Zr-Ti alloys in simulated physiological solutions of a wide pH range (namely 3 ≤ pH ≤ 8) at 37 °C, and the best results were obtained for the alloys pre-treated at 500 °C. The formation of the passivating oxide layers in simulated physiological solution was monitored in situ using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), finding a transition from an electrochemically active surface, characteristic of the bare metal, to the heterogeneous formation of oxide layers behaving as insulating surfaces towards electron transfer reactions.
