Facial Synthesis of Silver-incorporated Conductive Polypyrrole Submicron Spheres for Supercapacitors

Cold Atmospheric Plasma-Assisted Direct Deposition of Polypyrrole-Ag Nanocomposites for Flexible Electronic Sensors

Conductive polymers and their composite materials have attracted considerable interest due to their potential applications in sensors, actuators, drug delivery systems, and energy storage devices. Despite their wide range of applications, many challenges remain primarily with respect to the complex synthesis and time-consuming manufacturing steps that are often required in the fabrication process of various devices with conductive polymers. Here, we demonstrate the novel use of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP)-assisted deposition technologies as a solvent-free and scalable approach for in situ polymerization and direct deposition of conductive polypyrrole-silver (PPy-Ag) nanocomposites onto the desired substrates under atmospheric conditions. In this study, a systematic approach with different precursor composition mixtures containing pyrrole as the monomer and AgNO₃ as the photoinitiator was investigated to assess the effect of precursor composition on the final chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties of the PPy-Ag nanocomposite thin-film coatings which were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and cyclic bending tests. The characterizations indicated the possibility of fabricating PPy-Ag nanocomposite films with tunable degrees of polymerization and Ag nanoparticle loading by simply varying the percentage of AgNO₃ in precursor composition mixtures. Finally, as a proof of concept, the potential use of the PPy-Ag nanocomposite films with different Ag nanoparticle loading percentages was assessed for humidity sensing by measuring their level of change in electrical resistance in the relative humidity range of 12-60%. It is envisioned that the developed CAP-assisted deposition technology can provide a new stepping stone toward scalable additive manufacturing of various functional nanocomposite films for different low-cost and flexible electronic applications.

In-situ synthesis of polypyrrole/silver for fabricating alginate fabrics with high conductivity, UV resistance and hydrophobicity

In this research, the polypyrrole/silver (PPy/Ag) composite was first in-situ prepared on alginate fabrics by chemical oxidative polymerization of pyrrole (Py) monomer using silver nitrate as oxidant and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as the dopant. The effects of mole ratio of Py to silver nitrate, reaction time and dopant concentration on the preparation of PPy/Ag composite were optimized. It was found the optimal molar ratio of Py to silver nitrate was 1:1.5 with 0.02 M SDS under the reaction time of 10 h. Then, the microstructure and properties of resultant PPy/Ag composite were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy and the thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), respectively. Finally, the influences of PPy/Ag coating on the performance of alginate fabrics including electrical conductivity, hydrophilicity, antistatic property and anti-ultraviolet capability were determined. It was found that the electrical conductivity of alginate fabric could be intensively increased after PPy/Ag coating. Meantime, the anti-ultraviolet capability and hydrophobicity could be largely improved by PPy/Ag coating especially under high Py dosage. This paper introduced a simple method for preparing PPy/Ag composite direct on alginate fabric to make it a good functional substrate which could be applied in many fields.

Interface-assisted synthesis: a gateway to effective nanostructure tuning of conducting polymers

The interface-assisted polymerization technique can be viewed as a powerful emerging tool for the synthesis of conducting polymers (CPs) on a large scale. Contrary to other bulk or single-phase polymerization techniques, interface-assisted synthesis strategies offer effective nanostructure control in a confined two-dimensional (2-D) space. This review focuses on the types of interfaces, mechanism at the interface, advantages and future perspectives of the interfacial polymerization in comparison to conventional polymerization techniques. Hence, the primary focus is on briefing the different types of the chemical methods of polymerization, followed by uniqueness in the reaction dynamics of interface polymerization. The classification of interfaces into four types (liquid/solid, gas/liquid, liquid/liquid, and gas/solid) is based on the versatility and underlying mechanistic pathway of the polymerization of each type. The role of interface in tuning the nanostructure of CPs and the performance evaluation of pristine CPs based on the electrical conductivity are also discussed. Finally, the future outlook of this emerging field is discussed and proposed in detail through some multifunctional applications of synthesized conducting polymers.

Water-Chloroform Interface Assisted Microstructure Tuning of Polypyrrole-Silver Sheets

The liquid-liquid interface of two immiscible solvents remarkably controls the morphology of polymeric nanostructures as compared to the polymerization in single solvent systems. The polymerization of pyrrole in the water-chloroform medium using silver nitrate (AgNO₃) as oxidant yields polypyrrole/silver (PPy/Ag) sheets. The water-chloroform interface acts as a template for the growth of PPy/Ag hybrids into sheets by preventing the secondary growth of silver associated pyrrole oligomers in a three-dimensional (3-D) manner. On the contrary, the 3-D growth of pyrrole oligomers into spherical shapes at the water-chloroform interface is observed when ammonium persulfate (APS) is used as the oxidant. Transmission electron microscopic and scanning electron microscopic images reveal the sheetlike morphology of PPy/Ag with a relatively uniform distribution of Ag NPs (∼100 nm) on PPy sheets. The ratio of aqueous-organic bisolvent and the concentration/type of oxidant have a distinct effect on morphology, crystallinity, and electrical properties of PPy/Ag sheets. The dispersed PPy/Ag sheets are stable in moderately polar solvents up to 2 weeks. The electrochemical behavior of PPy/Ag sheets is confirmed by H₂O₂ sensing capability through cyclic voltammetry experiments. The antibacterial activity toward E. coli and S. aureus is quantitatively assessed using the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) determination.

A Wearable Supercapacitor Engaged with Gold Leaf Gilding Cloth Toward Enhanced Practicability

Flexible energy storage devices have attracted wide attention because of the increasing requirement of wearable electronics. However, comfortability, productivity, and feasibility, to name a few, are still far from satisfactory in the current wearable supercapacitors (SCs). This is largely due to the missing of an ideal low-cost flexible substrate/current collector that should not only exhibit high conductivity, but also be compatible with modern textile technologies. Herein, we apply the traditional gilding technique to cloth and successfully convert the cloth to be an excellent current collector which is available at a reasonable cost and compatible with textile technologies. Thanks to the strong electrostatic interaction, we found that a positively charged gold leaf could be laminated on a negatively charged polyester cloth intimately. This substrate could perfectly act as an integrated compact electrode after the electrodeposition of polypyrrole nanorods. The resulting electrode is mechanically strong enough to withstand the tortures of repeated bending, cutting, or puncturing, and is readily assembled into wearable SCs and energy cloth with outstanding practicability, for example, safety and breathability. It is foreseeable that our work will inspire a series design of wearable electronics based on the fascinating gilding art.

A strategy to promote the electroactive platform adopting poly(o-anisidine)-silver nanocomposites probed for the voltammetric detection of NADH and dopamine

A study on the voltammetric detection of NADH (β-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), Dopamine (DA) and their simultaneous determination is presented in this work. The electrochemical sensor was fabricated with the hybrid nanocomposites of poly(o-anisidine) and silver nanoparticles prepared by simple and cost-effective insitu chemical oxidative polymerization technique. The nanocomposites were synthesized with different (w/w) ratios of o-anisidine and silver by increasing the amount of o-anisidine in each, by keeping silver at a fixed quantity. The XRD patterns revealed the semi-crystalline nature of poly(o-anisidine) and the face centered cubic structure of silver. The presence of silver in its metallic state and the formation of nanocomposite were established by XPS analysis. Raman studies suggested the presence of site-selective interaction between poly(o-anisidine) and silver. HRTEM studies revealed the formation of polymer matrix type nanocomposite with the embedment of silver nanoparticles. The sensing performance of the materials were studied via cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry and chronoamperometry techniques. Fabricated sensor with 3:1 (w/w) ratio of poly(o-anisidine) and silver exhibited good catalytic activity towards the detection of NADH and DA in terms of potential and current response, when compared to others. Several important electrochemical parameters regulating the performance of the sensor have been evaluated. Under the optimum condition, differential pulse voltammetry method exhibited the linear response in the range of 0.03 to 900μM and 5 to 270μM with a low detection limit of 0.006μM and 0.052μM for NADH and DA, respectively. The modified electrodes exhibited good sensitivity, stability, reproducibility and selectivity with well-separated oxidation peaks for NADH and DA in the simultaneous determination of their binary mixture. The analytical performance of the nanocomposite as an electrochemical sensor was also established for the determination of NADH in human urine and water samples and DA in pharmaceutical dopamine injections with satisfactory coverage.

High-performance glucose biosensor based on chitosan-glucose oxidase immobilized polypyrrole/Nafion/functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes bio-nanohybrid film

A highly electroactive bio-nanohybrid film of polypyrrole (PPy)-Nafion (Nf)-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (fMWCNTs) nanocomposite was prepared on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by a facile one-step electrochemical polymerization technique followed by chitosan-glucose oxidase (CH-GOx) immobilization on its surface to achieve a high-performance glucose biosensor. The as-fabricated nanohybrid composite provides high surface area for GOx immobilization and thus enhances the enzyme-loading efficiency. The structural characterization revealed that the PPy-Nf-fMWCNTs nanocomposite films were uniformly formed on GCE and after GOx immobilization, the surface porosities of the film were decreased due to enzyme encapsulation inside the bio-nanohybrid composite materials. The electrochemical behavior of the fabricated biosensor was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and amperometry measurements. The results indicated an excellent catalytic property of bio-nanohybrid film for glucose detection with improved sensitivity of 2860.3μAmM(-1)cm(-2), the linear range up to 4.7mM (R(2)=0.9992), and a low detection limit of 5μM under a signal/noise (S/N) ratio of 3. Furthermore, the resulting biosensor presented reliable selectivity, better long-term stability, good repeatability, reproducibility, and acceptable measurement of glucose concentration in real serum samples. Thus, this fabricated biosensor provides an efficient and highly sensitive platform for glucose sensing and can open up new avenues for clinical applications.

Binaphthyl-incorporated π-conjugated polymer/gold nanoparticle hybrids: a facile size- and shape-tailored synthesis
