Photoelectrocatalysis of Rhodamine B and Solar Hydrogen Production by TiO 2 and Pd/TiO 2 Catalyst Systems

Pd:In-Doped TiO2 as a Bifunctional Catalyst for the Photoelectrochemical Oxidation of Paracetamol and Simultaneous Green Hydrogen Production

The integration of clean energy generation with wastewater treatment holds promise for addressing both environmental and energy concerns. Focusing on photocatalytic hydrogen production and wastewater treatment, this study introduces PdIn/TiO2 catalysts for the simultaneous removal of the pharmaceutical contaminant paracetamol (PTM) and hydrogen production. Physicochemical characterization showed a high distribution of Pd and In on the support as well as a high interaction with it. The Pd and In deposition enhance the light absorption capability and significantly improve the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in the absence and presence of paracetamol compared to TiO2. On the other hand, the photoelectroxidation of PTM at TiO2 and PdIn/TiO2 follows the full mineralization path and, accordingly, is limited by the adsorption of intermediate species on the electrode surface. Thus, PdIn-doped TiO2 stands out as a promising photoelectrocatalyst, showcasing enhanced physicochemical properties and superior photoelectrocatalytic performance. This underscores its potential for both environmental remediation and sustainable hydrogen production.

Hybrid TiO2/Carbon quantum dots heterojunction photoanodes for solar photoelectrocatalytic wastewater treatment

The modification of titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a strategy to maximize the utilization of sunlight. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are carbon nanomaterials with outstanding optical and electronic properties that are suitable for that purpose. In this work, three types of hybrid TiO2/CQD photoelectrodes were synthesized following different methods: 1) deposition of a CQD layer on top of TiO2 (labelled as TiO2-CQD); 2) deposition of a TiO2 layer on top of CQDs (labelled as CQD-TiO2) and; 3) deposition of a mixed CQD + TiO2 layer (labelled as CQD + TiO2). The photoelectrodes were investigated for the photoelectrocatalytic degradation of phenol as model pollutant under simulated solar light and TiO2-CQD showed the highest apparent reaction rate constant of kapp = 0.0117 min-1 with 40% of TOC removal in 6 h of treatment. CQDs were found to enhance photon absorption in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum and in turn phenol degradation by promoting the separation of photogenerated charge carriers through electron transfer via the Ti-O-C bonds formed at the TiO2-CQD interface. Finally, the performance of the TiO2-CQD photoanode was evaluated for the treatment of real wastewater from the membrane fabrication sector, confirming its photoelectrocatalytic efficiency under solar radiation with 93% of TOC removal in 8 h of treatment and kapp = 0.0058 min-1.

Viable production of hydrogen and methane from polluted water using eco-friendly plasmonic Pd-TiO2 nanocomposites

Solar-to-fuel conversion is a novel clean energy approach that has gained the interest of many researchers. Solar-driven photocatalysts have become essential to providing valuable fuel gases such as methane and hydrogen. Solar energy has emerged as a renewable, abundant energy source that can efficiently drive photochemical reactions through plasmonic photocatalysis. As a capping agent, orange peel extract was used in this study in a microwave-assisted green method to incorporate titanium dioxide with distinct amounts (3, 5, and 7 wt%) from Pd-plasmonic nanoparticles (2-5 nm). The leading role for plasmonic nanoparticles made from Pd-metal is enhancing the photocatalyst's ability to capture visible light, improving its performance. X-Ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and UV-vis DRS analyses have investigated the obtained plasmonic photocatalysts' crystallographic, morphological, and optical characteristics. The UV-vis absorption spectra demonstrated the visible light absorption capacity attributed to the localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) behavior of the newly formed nanoplasmonic photocatalysts. The generated Pd-TiO2 nanomaterials' photocatalytic activity has been examined and evaluated for combustible gas production, including the formation of CH4 and H2 from the photocatalytic degradation of Reactive Yellow 15 (RY) during a deoxygenated photoreaction in a homemade solar photobiogas reactor.

Tunable TiO2-BN-Pd nanofibers by combining electrospinning and atomic layer deposition to enhance photodegradation of acetaminophen

The demand for fresh and clean water sources is increasing globally, and there is a need to develop novel routes to eliminate micropollutants and other harmful species from water. Photocatalysis is a promising alternative green technology that has shown great performance in the degradation of persistent pollutants. Titanium dioxide is the most used catalyst owing to its attractive physico-chemical properties, but this semiconductor presents limitations in the photocatalysis process due to the high band gap and the fast recombination of the photogenerated carriers. Herein, a novel photocatalyst has been developed, based on titanium dioxide nanofibers (TiO2 NFs) synthesized by electrospinning. The TiO2 NFs were coated by atomic layer deposition (ALD) to grow boron nitride (BN) and palladium (Pd) on their surface. The UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements confirmed the increase of the band gap and the extension of the spectral response to the visible range. The obtained TiO2/BN/Pd nanofibers were then tested for photocatalysis, and showed a drastic increase of acetaminophen (ACT) degradation (>90%), compared to only 20% degradation obtained with pure TiO2 after 4 h of visible light irradiation. The high photocatalytic activity was attributed to the good dispersion of Pd NPs on TiO2-BN nanofibers, leading to a higher transfer of photoexcited hole carriers and a decrease of photogenerated electron-charge recombination. To confirm its reusability, recycling tests on the hybrid photocatalyst TiO2/BN/Pd have been performed, showing a good stability over 5 cycles under UV and visible light. In addition, toxicity tests as well as quenching tests were carried out to check the toxicity of the byproducts formed and to determine active species responsible for the degradation. The results presented in this work demonstrate the potential of TiO2/BN/Pd nanomaterials, and open new prospects for the preparation of tunable photocatalysts.

Photocatalytically reductive defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) using Pt/La2Ti2O7 nanoplates: Experimental and DFT assessment

To enable efficient degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), we prepared and investigated a nanosheet photocatalyst (Pt/La₂Ti₂O₇). Doping platinum nanoparticles on La₂Ti₂O₇ varied the band structure and improved the photocatalytic activity due to the enhanced charge separation. Methanol as the electron donor and sacrificial reagent significantly promoted the photocatalytically reductive degradation of PFOA that reduced by 40% within 180 min under UV₂₅₄ irradiation (1 mW∙cm²). The density functional theory calculations were used to analyze the effects of Pt doping and band structures on interfacial electron transfer and degradation pathways. As opposed to photocatalytic oxidation, this UV/Pt/La₂Ti₂O₇/CH₃OH photocatalysis could abstract electrons from methanol and convert to free reactive radicals and photo-generated electrons to reductively defluorinate PFOA and potentially other polyhalogenated or perhalogenated organic compounds.

Present applications of titanium dioxide for the photocatalytic removal of pollutants from water: A review

The evolution of modern technology and industrial processes has been accompanied by an increase in the utilization of chemicals to derive new products. Water bodies are frequently contaminated by the presence of conventional pollutants such as dyes and heavy metals, as well as microorganisms that are responsible for various diseases. A sharp rise has also been observed in the presence of new compounds heretofore excluded from the design and evaluation of wastewater treatment processes, categorized as "emerging pollutants". While some are harmless, certain emerging pollutants possess the ability to cause debilitating effects on a wide spectrum of living organisms. Photocatalytic degradation has emerged as an increasingly popular solution to the problem of water pollution due to its effectiveness and versatility. The primary objective of this study is to thoroughly scrutinize recent applications of titanium dioxide and its modified forms as photocatalytic materials in the removal and control of several classes of water pollutants as reported in literature. Different structural modifications are used to enhance the performance of the photocatalyst such as doping and formation of composites. The principles of these modifications have been scrutinized and evaluated in this review in order to present their advantages and drawbacks. The mechanisms involved in the removal of different pollutants through photocatalysis performed by TiO2 have been highlighted. The factors affecting the mechanism of photocatalysis and those affecting the performance of different TiO2-based photocatalysts have also been thoroughly discussed, thereby presenting a comprehensive view of all aspects involved in the application of TiO₂ to remediate and control water pollution.

In situ preparation of g-C3N4/Bi4O5I2 complex and its elevated photoactivity in Methyl Orange degradation under visible light

A graphite carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) modified Bi₄O₅I₂ composite was successfully prepared in-situ via the thermal treatment of a g-C₃N₄/BiOI precursor at 400°C for 3 hr. The as-prepared g-C₃N₄/Bi₄O₅I₂ showed high photocatalytic performance in Methyl Orange (MO) degradation under visible light. The best sample presented a degradation rate of 0.164 min^-1, which is 3.2 and 82 times as high as that of Bi₄O₅I₂ and g-C₃N₄, respectively. The g-C₃N₄/Bi₄O₅I₂ was characterized by X-ray powder diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and transient photocurrent response in order to explain the enhanced photoactivity. Results indicated that the decoration with a small amount of g-C₃N₄ influenced the specific surface area only slightly. Nevertheless, the capability for absorbing visible light was improved measurably, which was beneficial to the MO degradation. On top of that, a strong interaction between g-C₃N₄ and Bi₄O₅I₂ was detected. This interplay promoted the formation of a favorable heterojunction structure and thereby enhanced the charge separation. Thus, the g-C₃N₄/Bi₄O₅I₂ composite presented greater charge separation efficiency and much better photocatalytic performance than Bi₄O₅I₂. Additionally, g-C₃N₄/Bi₄O₅I₂ also presented high stability. •O₂^- and holes were verified to be the main reactive species.

Poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene) modified polyvinylidene fluoride membrane for visible photoelectrocatalysis and filtration

A polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) organic conductive membrane with photoelectric activity was successfully developed via printing of oxidant (FeCl₃·6H₂O) layer by layer and then chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of Poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). Four kinds of membranes were prepared by changing the number of oxidant coatings layers. The structure and photoelectric properties of four membranes were well characterized. The photocurrent density of 3.7 × 10^-4 A indicated that the four-oxidant coating layers membrane achieved the best performance in photo-electricity activity. A comprehensive study of degradation efficiency under different photoelectric conditions was carried out. Results showed that the photoelectrocatalytic removal of tetracycline hydrochloride was 1.6 and 7.9 times higher than that of photocatalysis and photolysis, respectively, under a voltage of 3 V assisted with visible light irradiation. The anti-interference and stability tests in continuous filtration process demonstrated that the dissolved organic matters (DOMs) can result in a 30% fluctuation on removal rate. The streaming potential tests of DOMs adsorption on membrane surface indicated that the more obvious the adsorption phenomenon was, the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride was weaker. The degradation intermediates were identified and pathways were proposed in this work. The photoelectrocatalysis of PEDOT modified PVDF membrane provided a new potential for water purification.

Preparation and photocathodic protection property of ZnIn2S4/RGO/TiO2 composites for Q235 carbon steel under visible light

For improving the photocathodic protection performance of TiO₂ photoanode, ZnIn₂S₄/reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/TiO₂ nanotubes (NTs) composite was synthesized by electrochemical anodizing combined with hydrothermal method. The photoelectrochemical and photocathodic protection properties of the ZnIn₂S₄/RGO/TiO₂ composite were investigated in detail. Compared with pure TiO₂ NTs, the ZnIn₂S₄/RGO/TiO₂ composite showed a significant improvement in photocathodic protection performances. The photogenerated open circuit potential drop of ZnIn₂S₄/RGO/TiO₂ coupled with Q235 carbon steel in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution under visible light could reach 420 mV versus saturated calomel electrode, which was more than twice as much as that of pure TiO₂. The photogenerated current density of ZnIn₂S₄/RGO/TiO₂ could reach 5.6 mA cm^-2, which was twice as much as that of pure TiO₂. The appearance of the adsorbed oxygen (O_A) enabled the ZnIn₂S₄/RGO/TiO₂ to have better photo-carrier separation efficiency and better photogenerated cathodic protection than pure TiO₂. The present work demonstrated ZnIn₂S₄/RGO/TiO₂ could be a potential material for photoanodes because of its better visible-light response, higher electrical conductivity and smaller charge transfer resistance.

ZnGaNO Photocatalyst Particles Prepared from Methane-Based Nitridation Using Zn/Ga/CO3 LDH as Precursor

Methane-based nitridation was employed to produce wurtzite zinc-gallium oxynitride (ZnGaNO) photocatalyst particles using Zn/Ga/CO₃ layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as precursor. Introduction of methane to nitridation would promote the formation of Zn-O bonding and suppress shallow acceptor complexes such as V_(Zn)-Ga_(Zn) and Ga-O_i in ZnGaNO particles. On the other hand, high flow rate of methane would induce breaking of Ga-N bonding and enhance surface deposition of metallic Ga atoms. After loading with Rh and RuO₂, ZnGaNO particles had free electron density in an order of S50 > S20 > S90 > S0, which correlated well with their photocatalytic performance upon visible-light irradiation. The best performance of the loaded S50 was ascribed to the relatively flat surface band bending of the particle. Methane-based nitridation of Zn/Ga/CO₃ LDHs would provide a new route to tune the surface chemistry of ZnGaNO and enhance the photocatalytic performance to its full potential.

Mechanistic insights into plasmonic photocatalysts in utilizing visible light

The utilisation of sunlight as an abundant and renewable resource has motivated the development of sustainable photocatalysts that can collectively harvest visible light. However, the bottleneck in utilising the low energy photons has led to the discovery of plasmonic photocatalysts. The presence of noble metal on the plasmonic photocatalyst enables the harvesting of visible light through the unique characteristic features of the noble metal nanomaterials. Moreover, the formation of interfaces between noble metal particles and semiconductor materials further results in the formation of a Schottky junction. Thereby, the plasmonic characteristics have opened up a new direction in promoting an alternative path that can be of value to the society through sustainable development derived through energy available for all for diverse applications. We have comprehensively prepared this review to specifically focus on fundamental insights into plasmonic photocatalysts, various synthesis routes, together with their strengths and weaknesses, and the interaction of the plasmonic photocatalyst with pollutants as well as the role of active radical generation and identification. The review ends with a pinnacle insight into future perspectives regarding realistic applications of plasmonic photocatalysts.
