Progress in environmental monitoring and mitigation strategies for herbicides and insecticides: A comprehensive review

Herbicides and insecticides are pervasively applied in agricultural sector to increase the yield by controlling or eliminating bug vermin and weeds. Although, resistance development occurs, direct and indirect impact on human health and ecosystem is clearly visible. Normally, herbicides and pesticides are water soluble in nature; accordingly, it is hard to decrease their deadliness and to dis-appear them from the environment. They are profoundly specific, and considered as poisonous to various peoples in agricultural and industrial work places. In order to substantially reduce the harmful impacts, it is crucial to thoroughly examine the detection and mitigation measures for these compounds. The primary objective of this paper is to provide an overview of various herbicide and pesticide detection techniques and associated remedial techniques. A short summary on occurrence and harmful effects of herbicides/insecticides on ecosystem has been included to the study. The conventional and advanced, rapid techniques for the detection of insecticides and herbicides were described in detail. A detailed overview on several mitigation strategies including advanced oxidation, adsorption, electrochemical process, and bioremediation as well as the mechanism behind the strategic approaches to reduce the effects of growing pesticide pollution has been emphasized. Regardless of the detection techniques and mitigation strategies, the recent advances employed, obstacles, and perspectives have been discussed in detail.

Detection of radicals produced during electro-oxidation of atrazine using commercial DSA®-Cl2 in methanol media: Keys to understand the process

This work reports the radicals detected and identified during the degradation of atrazine in methanol medium in the presence and absence of different proportions of water (0%, 5%, and 10%). The determination of these radicals is an important step to understand the electrolysis processes in methanol medium and contribute to clarify the degradation mechanism. Furthermore, the parameters for the successful removal of the contaminant were optimized and the results showed that the application of the technique led to the removal of nearly 99.8% of atrazine after 1 h of electrolysis. The oxidation kinetics was found to be very fast and most of the atrazine molecule in the medium was degraded in the first hour of electrolysis. The results obtained from a thorough analysis conducted with a view to evaluating the effects of different current densities and initial pH values on atrazine degradation showed that the application of higher current densities resulted in lower energy consumption, as this led to faster removal of atrazine. Additionally, the initial pH of the solution was found to favor the formation of different species of active chlorine. The radicals formed during the electro-oxidation process were detected by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and include hydroxyl, methoxy and hydroxymethyl. The use of methanol for the degradation of pollutants is a highly promising technique and this work shows that the identification of the different radicals formed in the process can be the key to understanding the degradation mechanism.

Upgrading the peroxi-coagulation treatment of complex water matrices using a magnetically assembled mZVI/DSA anode: Insights into the importance of ClO radical

The electrochemical technologies for water treatment have flourished over the last decades. However, it is still challenging to treat the actual complex water effluents by a single electrochemical process, often requiring coupling of technologies. In this study, an upgraded peroxi-coagulation (PC) process with a magnetically assembled mZVI/DSA anode has been devised for the first time. COD, NH₃-N and total phosphorous were simultaneously and effectively removed from livestock wastewater. The advantages, influence of key parameters and evolution of electrogenerated species were systematically investigated to fully understand this novel PC process. The fluorescent substances in livestock wastewater could also be almost removed under optimal conditions (300 mA, 0.2 g ZVI particles and pH 6.8). The interaction between OH and active chlorine yielded ClO with a high steady-state concentration of 6.85 × 10^-13 M, which did not cause COD removal but accelerated the oxidation of NH₃-N. The Mulliken population suggested that OH and NH₃-N had similar electron-donor behavior, whereas ClO acted as an electron-withdrawing species. Besides, although the energy barrier for the reaction between OH and NH₃-N (17.0 kcal/mol) was lower than that with ClO (18.8 kcal/mol), considering the tunneling in the H abstraction reaction, the Skodje-Truhlar method adopted for calculations evidenced a 17-fold faster NH₃-N oxidation rate with ClO. In summary, this work describes an advantageous single electrochemical process for the effective treatment of a complex water matrix.

Preparation of three dimensional bimetallic Cu-Ni/NiF electrodes for efficient electrochemical removal of nitrate nitrogen

It still remains a hotspot and great challenge to efficiently remove the nitrate nitrogen from high salt wastewater. Herein, a novel three dimensional porous bimetallic copper-nickel alloy electrode was fabricated with Ni foam (NiF) as substrate. The physicochemical and electrochemical characterization results showed Cu-Ni/NiF electrode possessed the smaller particle size (0.3-1.0 μm) and electrode film resistance comparing with Ni/NiF and Cu/NiF electrodes. Besides, higher double layer capacitance (C_dl) for Cu-Ni/NiF electrode indicated more electrochemical active sites could be used in the electrochemical nitrate nitrogen (NO₃^--N) removal. The electrochemical experiments showed the Cu-Ni/NiF electrode had the optimal NO₃^--N reduction ability and almost 100% NO₃^--N removal could be achieved with 30 min. All NO₃^--N removal processes were in accord with the pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics completely. The gaseous nitrogen selectivity for Cu-Ni/NiF electrode could reach 80.9% within 300 min. Stability assessment experiments indicated the Cu-Ni/NiF electrode all kept an excellent stability with Na₂SO₄ or NaCl electrolyte and the Cl^- addition could significantly improve the gaseous nitrogen selectivity. Finally, a possible removal mechanism of NO₃^--N was proposed. This work offered a direction for designing non-noble bimetallic electrodes for nitrate removal.

Electrochemical oxidation of ciprofloxacin in different aqueous matrices using synthesized boron-doped micro and nano-diamond anodes

The present work investigates the electrocatalytic performance of two different morphologies of boron doped-diamond film electrode (microcrystalline diamond - MCD, and nanocrystalline diamond - NCD) used in electrochemical oxidation for the removal of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP). A thorough study was conducted regarding the formation of the MCD and NCD films through the adjustment of methane in CH₄/H₂ gas mixture, and the two films were compared in terms of crystalline structure, apparent doping level, and electrochemical properties. The physicochemical results showed that the NCD film had higher sp² carbon content and greater doping level; this contributed to improvements in its surface roughness, as well as its specific capacitance and charge transfer, which consequently enhanced its electrocatalytic activity in comparison with the MCD. The results obtained from CIP removal and mineralization assays performed in sulfate medium also showed that the NCD was more efficient than the MCD under all the current densities investigated. The effects of CIP concentration and the evolution of the final by-products, including short-chain carboxylic acids and inorganic ions, were also investigated. The electrochemical performance of the NCD was evaluated in different aqueous matrices, including chloride medium, real wastewater and simulated urine. The application of the NCD led to complete or almost complete CIP degradation, regardless of the medium employed. The kinetic constant rates obtained under the different media investigated were as follows: synthetic urine (0.0416 min^-1 - R² = 0.991) < real wastewater (0.0923 min^-1 R² = 0.997) < synthetic matrix containing chloride (0.1992 min^-1 - R² = 0.995); this shows that the pollutant degradation was affected by the type of aqueous matrix and the oxidants that were electrogenerated in situ. The results obtained from the analysis of electrical energy per order (EE/O) showed that the treatment of simulated urine spkiked with required the highest energy consumption, followed by the real effluent and synthetic matrix containing chloride. The present study proves the viability of electrocatalytic nanostructured materials to the treatment of antibiotics in complex matrices.

One-step hydrothermal method for preparation of Ni/carbon thin film electrodes for efficient electroreduction of imidacloprid

A Ni/CTF was used as the cathode for electroreduction of imidacloprid, achieving a 92.1% removal efficiency for the electroreduction of imidacloprid.

Hazardous wastes treatment technologies

A review of the literature published in 2019 on topics related to hazardous waste management in water, soils, sediments, and air. The review covered treatment technologies applying physical, chemical, and biological principles for the remediation of contaminated water, soils, sediments, and air. PRACTICAL POINTS: This report provides a review of technologies for the management of waters, wastewaters, air, sediments, and soils contaminated by various hazardous chemicals including inorganic (e.g., oxyanions, salts, and heavy metals), organic (e.g., halogenated, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, pesticides, and persistent organic chemicals) in three scientific areas of physical, chemical, and biological methods. Physical methods for the management of hazardous wastes including general adsorption, sand filtration, coagulation/flocculation, electrodialysis, electrokinetics, electro-sorption ( capacitive deionization, CDI), membrane (RO, NF, MF), photocatalysis, photoelectrochemical oxidation, sonochemical, non-thermal plasma, supercritical fluid, electrochemical oxidation, and electrochemical reduction processes were reviewed. Chemical methods including ozone-based, hydrogen peroxide-based, potassium permanganate processes, and Fenton and Fenton-like process were reviewed. Biological methods such as aerobic, anoxic, anaerobic, bioreactors, constructed wetlands, soil bioremediation and biofilter processes for the management of hazardous wastes, in mode of consortium and pure culture were reviewed. Case histories were reviewed in four areas including contaminated sediments, contaminated soils, mixed industrial solid wastes and radioactive wastes.

Simultaneous Electrochemical Generation of Ferrate and Oxygen Radicals to Blue BR Dye Degradation

In this study, electro-oxidation (EOx) and in situ generation of ferrate ions [Fe(VI)] were tested to treat water contaminated with Blue BR dye (BBR) using a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode. Two electrolytic media (0.1 M HClO4 and 0.05 M Na2SO4) were evaluated for the BDD, which simultaneously produced oxygen radicals (•OH) and [Fe(VI)]. The generation of [Fe(VI)] was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and the effect of different current intensity values (e.g., 7 mA cm−2, 15 mA cm−2, and 30 mA cm−2) was assessed during BBR degradation tests. The discoloration of BBR was followed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. When the EOx process was used alone, only 78% BBR discoloration was achieved. The best electrochemical discoloration conditions were found using 0.05 M Na2SO4 and 30 mA cm−2. Using these conditions, overall BBR discoloration values up to 98%, 95%, and 87% with 12 mM, 6 mM, and 1 mM of FeSO4, respectively, were achieved. In the case of chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction, the EOx process showed only a 37% COD reduction, whereas combining [Fe(VI)] generation using 12 mM of FeSO4 achieved an up to 61% COD reduction after 90 min. The evolution of reaction byproducts (oxalic acid) was performed using liquid chromatography analysis.

Comparison of two different nickel oxide films for electrochemical reduction of imidacloprid

A nickel oxide (NiO) thin film was successfully prepared on Ni foil via a sol–gel method and a reduced state nickel oxide (r-NiO) thin film was obtained by etching NiO with hydrazine hydrate solution.
