A controllable flower-like FeMoO4/FeS2/Mo2S3 composite as efficient sulfur host for lithium-sulfur batteries

Selecting non-metal doped FeS2 as efficient sulfur cathode host for enhanced Li-S redox chemistry

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are considered as the development direction of the new generation energy storage system due to their high energy density and low cost. The slow redox kinetics of sulfur and the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfide (LiPS) are considered to be the main obstacles to the practical application of LSBs. Transition-metal sulfide as the cathode host can improve the Li-S redox chemistry. However, there has been no investigation of the application of FeS2 host in Li-S redox chemistry. Applying the first-principles calculations, we investigated the formation energy, band gap, Li+ diffusion, adsorption energy, catalytic performance and Li2 S decomposition barrier of FeAx S2-x (A=N, P, O, Se; x=0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.375) to explore the Li-S redox chemistry and finally select excellent host material. FeA0.25 S1.75 (A=P, Se) has a low Li+ diffusion barrier and superior electronic conductivity. FeO0.25 S1.75 is more favorable for LiPS adsorption, followed by FeP0.25 S1.75 . FeP0.25 S1.75 (001) shows a low overpotential for the Li-S redox chemistry. In summary, FeP0.25 S1.75 has more application potential in LSBs due to its physical and chemical properties, followed by FeSe0.25 S1.75 . This work provides theoretical guidance for the design and selection of the sulfur cathode host materials in LSBs.

A novel iron molybdate photocatalyst with heterojunction-like band gap structure for organic pollutant degradation by activation of persulfate under simulated sunlight irradiation

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) applied to wastewater treatment have become increasingly well developed and the ability of a single technology to remove difficult organic pollutants is limited. One of the main limiting factors is the insufficient variety and quantity of active species generated during the reaction process and catalyst failure. The coupling of the two methods is a practical and effective approach. In this study, different types of semiconductor persulfate (PS) activators, iron molybdate nanoparticles (I-FeMoO₄, II-FeMoO₄, and III-FeMoO₄), were synthesized by simple solvothermal and calcination methods and applied to photo-assisted activation of PS systems. In addition, the relationship between the intrinsic physicochemical and optoelectronic properties of FeMoO₄ and the catalytic degradation performance was revealed by a series of characterization tools, and the dominant catalysts were screened. At an unadjusted pH of 4.86, 0.6 g L^-1 of PS and 0.4 g L^-1 of I-FeMoO₄ could achieve efficient degradation of several difficult organic dye contaminants (rhodamine b (Rh B), methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG), methyl orange (MO), and tartrazine (TTZ)) and other antibiotic contaminants (sulfamethoxazole (SMX), tetracycline (TC), norfloxacin (NOR), and carbamazepine (CBZ)) within 5-60 min. Possible degradation mechanisms in the I-FeMoO₄/PS/Light reaction system were suggested by radical trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests. Recovery tests demonstrated that I-FeMoO₄ has good recoverable stability and did not cause secondary pollution. Finally, our study provided a new perspective on the application of coupled wastewater treatment technologies in the practical treatment of organic wastewater.

Scalable 3D Honeycombed Co3O4 Modified Separators as Polysulfides Barriers for High-Performance Li-S Batteries

Lithium sulfur batteries (LSBs) are regarded as one of the most promising energy storage devices due to the high theoretical capacity and energy density. However, the shuttling lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) from the cathode and the growing lithium dendrites on the anode limit the practical application of LSBs. To overcome these challenges, a novel three-dimensional (3D) honeycombed architecture consisting of a local interconnected Co₃O₄ successfully assembled into a scalable modified layer through mutual support, which is coated on commercial separators for high-performance LSBs. On the basis of the 3D honeycombed architecture, the modified separators not only suppress effectively the "shuttle effects" but also allow for fast lithium-ions transportation. Moreover, the theoretical calculations results exhibit that the collaboration of the exposed (111) and (220) crystal planes of Co₃O₄ is able to effectively anchor LiPSs. As expected, LSBs with 3D honeycombed Co₃O₄ modified separators present a reversible specific capacity with 1007 mAh g^-1 over 100 cycles at 0.1 C. More importantly, a high reversible capacity of 808 mAh g^-1 over 300 cycles even at 1 C is also acquired with the modified separators. Therefore, this proposed strategy of 3D honeycombed architecture Co₃O₄ modified separators will give a new route to rationally devise durable and efficient LSBs.

Bimetallic Co-Mo sulfide/carbon composites derived from polyoxometalate encapsulated polydopamine-decorated ZIF nanocubes for efficient hydrogen and oxygen evolution

The increased call for carbon neutrality by 2050 makes it compelling to develop emission-free alternative energy sources. Green hydrogen produced from water electrolyzers using renewable electricity is of great importance, and the development of efficient transition-metal-based materials for hydrogen production by electrolysis is highly desirable. In this report, a new approach to produce defect-rich and ultra-fine bimetallic Co-Mo sulfides/carbon composites from polyoxometalates@ZIF-67@polydopamine nanocubes via carbonization/sulfurization, which are highly active for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER), have been successfully developed. The coating of polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of the acid-sensitive ZIF-67 cubes can prevent the over-dissociation of ZIF-67 caused by the encapsulated phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) etching through PDA chelating with the PMA molecules. Meanwhile, the partially dissociated Co²⁺ from ZIF-67 can be captured by the coated PDA via chelation, resulting in more evenly dispersed active sites throughout the heterogeneous composite after pyrolysis. The optimized bimetallic composite CoMoS-600 exhibits a prominent improvement in HER (with an overpotential of -0.235 V vs. RHE at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2) and OER performance (with an overpotential of 0.350 V vs. RHE at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2), due to the synergistic effect of ultra-fine defect-rich Co-Mo-S nanoparticle active sites and N,S-codoped porous carbons in the composites. Moreover, this synthesis approach can be readily expanded to other acidic polyoxometalates to produce HER and OER active bimetallic Co-W sulfide/carbon composites by replacing PMA with phosphotungstic acid. This new synthesis strategy to modify acid-sensitive ZIFs with selected compounds offers an alternative approach to develop novel transition metal sulfide/carbon composites for various applications.

Customized Structure Design and Functional Mechanism Analysis of Carbon Spheres for Advanced Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are attracting much attention due to their high theoretical energy density and are considered to be the predominant competitors for next-generation energy storage systems. The practical commercial application of LSBs is mainly hindered by the severe "shuttle effect" of the lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and the serious damage of lithium dendrites. Various carbon materials with different characteristics have played an important role in overcoming the above-mentioned problems. Carbon spheres (CSs) are extensively explored to enhance the performance of LSBs owing to their superior structures. The review presents the state-of-the-art advances of CSs for advanced high-energy LSBs, including their preparation strategies and applications in inhibiting the "shuttle effect" of the LiPSs and protecting lithium anodes. The unique restriction effect of CSs on LiPSs is explained from three working mechanisms: physical confinement, chemical interaction, and catalytic conversion. From the perspective of interfacial engineering and 3D structure designing, the protective effect of CSs on the lithium anode is also analyzed. Not only does this review article contain a summary of CSs in LSBs, but also future directions and prospects are discussed. The systematic discussions and suggested directions can enlighten thoughts in the reasonable design of CSs for LSBs in near future.

ZIF-67 derived hierarchical hollow Co3S4@Mo2S3 dodecahedron with an S-scheme surface heterostructure for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Using ZIF-67 as a template, and the continuous temperature-raising hydrothermal method to built a heterojunction between Co3S4 and Mo2S3, this strategy synthesized a highly efficient Co3S4@Mo2S3 composite with a stable rhombohedral structure.

Natural pyrite improved steel slag towards environmentally sustainable chromium reclamation from hexavalent chromium-containing wastewater

Currently, varied processes adopted to remove hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution have been realized to cause secondary pollution. As such, this study explored a green method for aqueous hexavalent chromium (Cr(Ⅵ)) reclamation by waste steel slag (SS) enhanced by natural pyrite (NP). Compared with the sole SS or NP, more efficient Cr(Ⅵ) removal was achieved by NP-SS at an initial pH value ranging from 1 to 8, resulting in a final pH value of 7-8. Cr(Ⅵ) in the solution could be initially reduced to Cr(III) by Fe²⁺ provided by NP, which was then bound with the OH^- in the solution and the supersaturated calcium silicate hydrate on the surface of SS. In addition, the stearic acid anions existing on the surface of SS could promote the adsorption of Cr(III) to form chromium stearate. The used adsorbent could be potentially used for chromium smelting. Overall, this study provides a feasible and environmental sustainable solution to chromium reclamation from hexavalent chromium-containing wastewater.

Three-Dimensional Engineering of Sulfur/MnO2 Composites for High-Rate Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Herein, a three-dimensional interconnected sulfur (3DIS) system is used to construct a cathode of the lithium-sulfur battery. Compared with the traditional methods of encapsulating sulfur, the 3DIS system serves as a framework to grow MnO₂, which ensures a high sulfur content of 91.5 wt % (the ratio of sulfur/host was 10.8) and a uniform distribution of sulfur. Due to the synergistic effect of the 3D interconnected architecture and the uniform coating layer of polar MnO₂, 3DIS@MnO₂ (3DISMO) delivers a capacity of 891 mA h g^-1 after 900 cycles at 1 C. Even at a rate of 10 C, a capacity decay rate of 0.061% per cycle is achieved.

Reasonably Introduced ZnIn2S4@C to Mediate Polysulfide Redox for Long-Life Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

In consideration of the inferior rate performance and low sulfur utilization of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs), an effective strategy via combining polar materials with the conductive carbon sulfur host is widely applied. Herein, metal organic framework-derived in situ-developed ZnIn₂S₄@C is innovatively synthesized to mediate lithium polysulfide (LPS) conversion based on high electron conductivity and strong chemical interactions for advanced LSBs. Polar ZnIn₂S₄ possesses strong chemisorption in keeping with the DFT calculation results and catalytic for LPSs, ensuring a high sulfur utilization. Meanwhile, the hollow non-polar carbon frame possessing hierarchical pores not only provides internal space to contain active species but also accommodates efficient electronic transferring and diffusion of lithium ions in the process of cycling. The above advantages make the electrode possess promising stability and good rate performances, achieving long-term and high-rate cycling. Thus, under a sulfur loading of 1.5 mg cm^-2, after 500 cycles, at 2 and 5 C, the as-prepared ZnIn₂S₄@C@S delivers reversible capacities of 734 mA h g^-1 (75.7% of the initial capacity with a dropping rate of 0.015% per cycle) and 504 mA h g^-1 (68.5% of the primal capacity with a dropping rate of 0.029% per cycle), respectively. Even at a high sulfur loading of 5.0 mg cm^-2, at 5 C, 65.6% of the initial capacity can be maintained with a low fading rate of 0.430% per cycle after 500 loops with a high Coulombic efficiency of around 99.8%.

MOF-derived fluorine and nitrogen co-doped porous carbon for an integrated membrane in lithium–sulfur batteries
