Typical pesticides diffuse loading and degradation pattern differences under the impacts of climate and land-use variations

Occurrence, spatiotemporal dynamics, and ecological risk of fungicides in a reservoir-regulated basin

As an indispensable type of pesticide, fungicides have been somewhat neglected compared to insecticides and herbicides. Heavy fungicide application in agricultural regions may generate downstream ecological concerns via in-stream transport, and the reservoir complicates the process. Monitoring fungicide exposure and exploring reservoir effect on fungicide transport is the key to develop the downstream strategies of agricultural diffusion pollution control. Here, we investigated the exposure, spatiotemporal dynamics, and ecological risk of fungicides in a reservoir-regulated agricultural basin, located in the middle of the Yangtze River Basin, China. Seven fungicides were preliminarily identified and exhibited high detection frequencies (>85 %) in subsequent quantification of water samples from three sampling activities. The total concentration of fungicides ranged from 2.47 to 560.29 ng/L, 28.35 to 274.69 ng/L, and 13.61 to 146.968 ng/L in April, September, and November, respectively. Overall, the contamination levels of fungicides were in the ascending order of April < November < September. The spatial distribution of fungicides was closely associated with the dense of cultivated land, supporting its agricultural source. Furthermore, the reservoir plays a retention role in fungicides, alleviating ecological pressure downstream during the water storage period. Yet, due to the alternation of "source" and "sink" function of the reservoir, the contribution of Zijiang River to the fungicide load in the Yangtze River Basin still needs further attention. Although there is no acute risk posed by fungicides, even in the high-exposure scenario, the chronic ecological risk could not be ignored. Agricultural intensive regions, coupled with the reservoir, provide rather substantial chronic ecological concerns. Carbendazim has been designated as a priority pollutant that contributes significantly to cumulative chronic risk. Thus, we emphasize strengthening the supervision of fungicides in surface water and rationally restricting the use of carbendazim in agricultural operations.

Heavy metal deposition dynamics under improved vegetation in the middle reach of the Yangtze River

Estuarine heavy metal deposition processes in tributaries can reflect the environmental changes in the basin and the contribution of tributaries to the pollution of downstream lakes. The dynamic processes of heavy metal deposition in two major tributaries of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River were explored using sediment cores. The relationships between heavy metals (HMs) and various physicochemical properties were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. The sediment chronological sequences were determined using Pb isotope dating, and the sediment fluxes of heavy metals were calculated. The differences in the driving factors of the two watersheds were analyzed using redundancy analysis. The results showed that heavy metal in both sediment cores were significantly higher than the corresponding background values and showed a relatively stable trend from deep to shallow, with Cd being the most exceeded heavy metal in both tributaries. The average sediment deposition rate was 1.31 cm/year. The Pearson correlation analysis (PCA) results between the HMs indicated similar sources, and the correlation analysis between HM and environmental variables showed that the HMs in both cores, especially Cu and Cr, were significantly correlated with phosphorus, suggesting a synergistic loss of HMs and P. Heavy metal deposition and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in watersheds showed a negative correlation. This negative correlation is more pronounced in watersheds with higher vegetation cover, where heavy metal deposition is more driven by natural factors. The redundancy analysis (RDA) results indicated that the transport of Cd and Cu was influenced by precipitation and runoff. Heavy metal deposition processes in lake estuaries under improved terrestrial vegetation show the historical contribution of tributaries to lakes, which is important for studying pollution and ecological restoration in watersheds.

Toxicological effects, environmental behaviors and remediation technologies of herbicide atrazine in soil and sediment: A comprehensive review

Atrazine has become one of the most popular applied triazine herbicides in the world due to its high herbicidal efficiency and low price. With its large-dosage and long-term use on a global scale, atrazine can cause widespread and persistent contamination of soil and sediment. This review systematically evaluates the toxicological effects, environmental risks, environmental behaviors (adsorption, transport and transformation, and bioaccumulation) of atrazine, and the remediation technologies of atrazine-contaminated soil and sediment. For the adsorption behavior of atrazine on soil and sediment, the organic matter content plays an extremely important role in the adsorption process. Various models and equations such as the multi-media fugacity model and solute transport model are used to analyze the migration and transformation process of atrazine in soil and sediment. It is worth noting that certain transformation products of atrazine in the environment even have stronger toxicity and mobility than its parent. Among various remediation technologies, the combination of microbial remediation and phytoremediation for atrazine-contaminated soil and sediment has wide application prospects. Although other remediation technologies such as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can also efficiently remove atrazine from soil, some potential problems still need to be further clarified. Finally, some related challenges and prospects are proposed.

Risk assessment of heavy metal and pesticide mixtures in aquatic biota using the DGT technique in sediments

Heavy metals and pesticides (HMPs) are common contaminants due to their extensive use worldwide. Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) are a good method for measuring the bioavailable concentration of pollutants. This study represents the first evaluation of HMP toxicity in aquatic biota using the DGT technique in sediments. Zhelin Bay was selected as the case study site because it has been contaminated by pollutants. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS) analysis reveals that a diverse range of pollutants (V, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, InHg, Mo, Cd, Sb, W, Pb, CLP, PYR) are mainly influenced by sediment characteristics. Assessment of single HMP toxicity found that the risk quotient (RQ) values for Mn, Cu, inorganic Hg (InHg), chlorpyrifos (CLP) and diuron (DIU) are significantly higher than 1, indicating that the adverse effects of these single HMPs should not be ignored. The combined toxicity of HMP mixtures based on probabilistic ecotoxicological risk assessment shows that Zhelin Bay surface sediments had a medium probability (54.6%) of toxic effects to aquatic biota.

Effects of chronic prometryn exposure on antioxidative status, intestinal morphology, and microbiota in sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus)

Prometryn is an occasional triazine herbicide used in aquaculture to kill algae. However, deposition of prometryn at the bottom of the pond poses a potential threat to aquatic animals, especially benthos, such as the sea cucumber. This study investigated the toxic effects of prometryn oral exposure on antioxidants, and the intestinal histomorphology and microbiome of sea cucumbers. Results showed that the accumulation of prometryn in the intestine, respiratory tree, and body wall decreased sequentially under the same level. Severe pathological damages were observed in the intestines of sea cucumbers fed with 0.080 and 1.595 g/kg prometryn (measured concentration). Moreover, hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations were significantly increased in prometryn treatment groups compared to the control group (P < 0.05), while the catalase (CAT) activity was significantly decreased (P < 0.05) in the coelomic fluid of treatment groups. At the phylum level, the abundance of Proteobacteria was significantly higher in the 0.080 g/kg treatment group than in the control group. In addition, prometryn exposure reduced the diversity of intestinal microflora in sea cucumbers. In conclusion, these results suggest that prometryn has potential toxicity to sea cucumber. Therefore, the harm of prometryn deposited in the sediment to aquatic animals must be a concern in aquaculture.

Metabolic process and spatial partition dynamics of Atrazine in an estuary-to-bay system, Jiaozhou bay

The spatial distributions of atrazine and six types of metabolites in water, suspended particulate sediment (SPS), and surface sediment in an estuary-to-bay system were analyzed. The water distance of metabolites demonstrated that degradation was more active in coastal zone and the Desisopropylatrazine had the shortest half-distance of 1.6 Km from the river mouth. The dechlorination-hydroxylation metabolites were the dominant pollutants in the bay and the Didealkyl-atrazine (DDA), Deisopropylhydroxy-atrazine (DIHA), and Deethylhydroxy-atrazine (DEHA) had higher concentrations in all three mediums. The DDA had the biggest content (6.58 ng/g) in the coastal sediment. The DIHA was the only pollutant had bigger concentration during the transport, and the others continually degraded with smaller value. The spatial distributions of pollutants in sediment had different patterns in water with SPS. The water-particle phase partition coefficient (K_p) analysis indicated that the partition process was more active in the estuary than the bay, and the metabolites had stronger capacity than atrazine. The correlations between K_p with octanol-water partitioning coefficient showed their physic-chemical properties were the important factors for vertical partition between seawater with sediment. The correlations with marine environmental factors demonstrated that the metabolite type was the direct factor for the redistributions during the transport.

Impact of rice straw biochar addition on the sorption and leaching of phenylurea herbicides in saturated sand column

The application of phenylurea herbicides (PUHs) may lead to the extensive distribution in soils, while the role of straw biochar as a soil amendment on the transport and sorption of PUHs are still unclear. Thus, the transport and sorption behavior of three typical PUHs with rice straw biochar (RSB) was studied in both adsorption simulation experiments of aqueous solution and packed column experiments. The sorption mechanism of RSB to herbicides was investigated through batch sorption studies with three influencing factors including dosage of RSB, pH, and ionic strength (IS) with orthogonal test. The sorption coefficients were improved significantly by increasing the dosage of RSB, while there was no obvious influence by enhancing the pH and IS value. The optimal sorption conditions (pH value at 3, IS at 0.1 M, and RSB dosage at 60 mg) of three herbicides were set and the maximum removal rates of Monuron, Diuron, and Linuron were 41.9%, 25%, and 56.8%, respectively. The co-transport process of RSB and PUHs were investigated under different RSB dosage, pH value, and IS value. The retention effect increased greatly with enhancing the RSB dosage and pH value. However, IS did not have a significant influence on the retention of RSB, and therefore it had little effect on the adsorption capacity, which was consistent with the results of sorption experiments. The breakthrough curves (BTCs) for co-transport were well simulated by the two-site non-equilibrium convection-dispersion equation (CDE). Most of the regression coefficients (R²) were above 0.99, which uncovered the co-transport in packed column were affected by physical absorption and chemical forces. According to the fitting parameters analysis, the RSB particles and PUHs were subjected to a greater resistance and a stronger stability by reducing pH value in porous media. The presence of RSB increased the amount of dynamic sorption sites in the entire co-transport system, which led to a significant promotion of the PUHs' sorption and interception.
