Seasonal cycles of secondary organic aerosol tracers in rural Guangzhou, Southern China: The importance of atmospheric oxidants

Multiphase reactions of proteins in the air: Oligomerization, nitration and degradation of bovine serum albumin upon ambient exposure

Proteins in atmospheric aerosol can react with atmospheric pollutants such as ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the atmosphere via the reactions of oxidation, nitration, and cross-linking etc. Currently, the reactions have been more thoroughly studied in the laboratory but rarely investigated in the ambient environment. In this study, we used bovine serum albumin (BSA) as the model protein to conduct the exposure experiment in the ambient environment in southern China, an area with increasing oxidative capacity, to investigate the reactions of proteins in the atmosphere. We observed the occurrence of oligomerization, nitration and degradation of BSA upon exposure. The mass fraction of BSA monomer decreased by 5.86 ± 1.61% after exposure and those of dimers, trimers and higher oligomers increased by 1.04 ± 0.49%, 1.37 ± 0.74% and 3.40 ± 1.06%, respectively. Simultaneously, the nitration degrees of monomers, dimers, trimers and higher oligomers increased by 0.42 ± 0.15%, 0.53 ± 0.15%, 0.55 ± 0.28% and 2.15 ± 1.01%, respectively. The results show that oligomerization was significantly affected by O3 and temperature and nitration was jointly affected by O3, temperature and relative humidity, indicating the important role of atmospheric oxidants in the atmospheric reactions of protein. Atmospheric degradation of BSA was observed with the release of free amino acids (FAAs) such as glycine, alanine, serine and methionine. Glycine was the dominant FAA with a molar yield ranging from ∼8% to 33% for BSA. The estimated stoichiometric coefficient (α) of glycine is 10-7-10-6 for the degradation of BSA upon O3. Our observation suggests the occurrence of protein reactions in the oxidative ambient environment, leading to the production of nitrated products, oligomers and low molecular weight products such as peptides and FAAs. This study may deepen the current understanding of the atmospheric reaction mechanisms and reveal the influence of environmental factors in the atmosphere.

Characteristics and health risk assessment of indoor and outdoor PM2.5 in a rural village, in Northeast of China: impact of coal and biomass burning

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has health effects that may depend on its sources and chemical composition. In this study, characteristics of PM2.5 chemical composition and health risk assessment from Songyuan, China, were investigated during day and night in indoor and outdoor from February 4 to 19, 2021. Relative high concentrations of PM2.5 were obtained in indoor environment than outdoor, with 503.95 ± 209.62 μg/m3 during the day and 357.52 ± 232.81 μg/m3 at night for the indoor environment. Relatively high total carbon, organic carbons, elemental carbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) were obtained in indoor environment. However, the average concentrations of PAHs were higher during night (73.57 ± 43.09 ng/m3) in indoor and OPAHs during day (6.027 ± 2.960 ng/m3) in outdoor. They had different I/O distributions of these compounds during day and night. Indeno(1,2,3-cd) pyrene was the dominant PAHs, and benzanthrone was the dominant OPAHs; this is different with the previous studies. The high indoor/outdoor ratios showed the indoor coal and biomass burning greatly affect the indoor pollutants. Average ILCR health risk assessment for PAHs was all higher than 10-6 for different age gender, suggesting there has potential cancer risk existed for populations living in the rural coal and biomass burning area Songyuan, China.

Diurnal Variations in High Time-Resolved Molecular Distributions and Formation Mechanisms of Biogenic Secondary Organic Aerosols at Mt. Huang, East China

The molecular characteristics and formation mechanism of biogenic secondary organic aerosols (BSOAs) in the forested atmosphere are poorly known. Here, we report the temporal variations in and formation processes of BSOA tracers derived from isoprene, monoterpenes, and β caryophyllene in PM2.5 samples collected at the foot of Mt. Huang (483 m a. s. l) in East China during the summer of 2019 with a 3 h time resolution. The concentrations of nearly all of the detected species, including organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), levoglucosan, and SIA (sum of SO42-, NO3-, and NH4+), were higher at night (19:00-7:00 of the next day) than in the daytime (7:00-19:00). In addition, air pollutants that accumulated by the dynamic transport of the mountain breeze at night were also a crucial reason for the higher BSOA tracers. Most of the BSOA tracers exhibited higher concentrations at night than in the daytime and peaked at 1:00 to 4:00 or 4:00 to 7:00. Those BSOA tracers presented strong correlations with O3 in the daytime rather than at night, indicating that BSOAs in the daytime were primarily derived from the photo-oxidation of BVOCs with O3. The close correlations of BSOA tracers with SO42- and particle acidity (pHis) suggest that BSOAs were primarily derived from the acid-catalyzed aqueous-phase oxidation. Considering the higher relative humidity and LWC concentration at night, the promoted aqueous oxidation was the essential reason for the higher concentrations of BSOA tracers at night. Moreover, levoglucosan exhibited a robust correlation with BSOA tracers, especially β-caryophyllinic acid, suggesting that biomass burning from long-distance transport exerted a significant impact on BSOA formation. Based on a tracer-based method, the estimated concentrations of secondary organic carbon (SOC) derived from isoprene, monoterpenes, and β caryophyllene at night (0.90 ± 0.57 µgC m-3) were higher than those (0.53 ± 0.34 µgC m-3) in the daytime, accounting for 14.5 ± 8.5% and 12.2 ± 5.0% of OC, respectively. Our results reveal that the BSOA formation at the foot of Mt. Huang was promoted by the mountain-valley breezes and anthropogenic pollutants from long-range transport.

Chronic Exposure to Secondary Organic Aerosols Causes Lung Tissue Damage

Recently, secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) emerged as a predominant component of fine particulate matter. However, the pathogenic mechanism(s) of SOAs are still poorly understood. Herein, we show that chronic exposure of mice to SOAs resulted in lung inflammation and tissue destruction. Histological analyses found lung airspace enlargement associated with massive inflammatory cell recruitment predominated by macrophages. Concomitant with such cell influx, our results found changes in the levels of a series of inflammatory mediators in response to SOA. Interestingly, we observed that the expression of the genes encoding for TNF-α and IL-6 increased significantly after one month of exposure to SOAs; mediators that have been largely documented to play a role in chronic pulmonary inflammatory pathologies. Cell culture studies confirmed these in vivo findings. Of importance as well, our study indicates increased matrix metalloproteinase proteolytic activity suggesting its contribution to lung tissue inflammation and degradation. Our work represents the first in vivo study, which reports that chronic exposure to SOAs leads to lung inflammation and tissue injury. Thus, we hope that these data will foster new studies to enhance our understanding of the underlying pathogenic mechanisms of SOAs and perhaps help in the design of therapeutic strategies against SOA-mediated lung injury.

Seasonal variation of driving factors of ambient PM2.5 oxidative potential in Shenzhen, China

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a central role in health effects of ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2.5). In this work, we screened for efficient and complementary oxidative potential (OP) measurements by comparing the response values of multiple chemical probes (OP^DTT, OP^OH, OP^GSH) to ambient PM_2.5 in Shenzhen, China. Combined with meteorological condition and PM_2.5 chemical composition analysis, we explored the effects of different chemical components and emission sources on the ambient PM_2.5 OP and analyzed their seasonal variations. The results show that OP_m^DTT(mass-normalized) and OP_m^GSH-SLF were highly correlated (r = 0.77). OP^DTT was mainly influenced by organic carbon, while OP^OH was highly dominated by heavy metals. The combination of OP^DTT and OP^OH provides an efficient and comprehensive measurement of OP. Temporally, the OPs were substantially higher in winter than in summer (1.4 and 4 times higher for OP_m^DTT and OP_m^OH, respectively). The long-distance transported biomass burning sources from the north dominated the OP^DTT in winter, while the ship emissions mainly influenced the summer OP. The OP_m^DTT increased sharply with the decrease of PM_2.5 mass concentration, especially when the PM_2.5 concentration was lower than 30 μg/m³. The huge differences in wind fields between the winter and summer cause considerable variations in PM_2.5 concentrations, components, and OP. Our work emphasizes the necessity of long-term, multi-method, multi-component assessment of the OP of PM_2.5.

Spatiotemporal distribution and influencing factors of secondary organic aerosols in the summer atmosphere from the Bering Sea to the western North Pacific

To better understand the formation process of biogenic and anthropogenic secondary organic aerosols (BSOA and ASOA) in the marine atmosphere under the background of global warming, aerosol samples were collected over three summers (i.e., 2014, 2016 and 2018) from the Bering Sea (BS) to the western North Pacific (WNP). The results showed that temporally, atmospheric concentrations of isoprene-derived SOA (SOA_I) tracers were the lowest in 2014 regardless of the marine region, while atmospheric concentrations of monoterpenes-derived SOA (SOA_M) tracers in this year were the highest and the aerosols were more aged than those in the other two years. In comparison, the concentrations of β-caryophyllene-derived and toluene-derived SOA (SOA_C and SOA_A) tracers were relatively low overall. Spatially, the concentrations of SOA tracers were significantly higher over the WNP than over the BS, with SOA tracers over the BS mainly coming from marine sources, while the WNP was strongly influenced by terrestrial inputs. In particular, for land-influenced samples from the WNP, NO_x-channel products of SOA_I were more dependent on O₃ and SO₂ relative to HO₂-channel product, and the high atmospheric oxidation capacity and SO₂ could promote the formation of later-generation SOA_M products. The extent of terrestrial influence was further quantified using a principal component analysis (PCA)-generalized additive model (GAM), which showed that terrestrial emissions explained more than half of the BSOA tracers' concentrations and contributed almost all of the ASOA tracer. In addition, the assessment of secondary organic carbon (SOC) highlighted the key role of anthropogenic activities in organic carbon levels in offshore areas. Our study revealed significant contributions of terrestrial natural and anthropogenic sources to different SOA over the WNP, and these relevant findings help improve knowledge about SOA in the marine atmosphere.

Seasonal variation, source contribution, and impact factors of biogenic organic aerosols in PM2.5 in Nanjing, China

In this study, a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) was used to develop a rapid method to detect carbohydrates (one anhydrosugar, five sugars, and four sugar alcohols) and monoterpene secondary organic aerosol (SOA_M) tracers in the atmosphere, successfully applied to 139 atmospheric aerosol samples in Nanjing in 2019. Anhydrosugar (levoglucosan) is the most abundant carbohydrate in the atmospheric environment, with an annual mean concentration of 103.96 ng m^-3. The measured compounds exhibited distinct seasonal variation, with a higher concentration in spring and summer and a lower concentration in autumn and winter. The distinct seasonal variation in these Bioorganic aerosol (BOA) tracers may be caused by the different dominant sources in different seasons. Their seasonal trends are also similar to other worldwide observations. In Nanjing, the yield of SOA_M tracers is affected by meteorological conditions and anthropogenic pollutants (e.g., NO₂ and O₃). Furthermore, five source factors (secondary formation, biomass burning, soil resuspension, plant debris, and fungal spores) of BOA and their geographic origin were obtained using the Positive Matrix Factor (PMF) and Potential Source Contribution Factor (PSCF) models. The contribution of these factors to BOA also varies, with biomass burning (77.4 %) contributing the most, followed by fungal spores (12.2 %) and soil suspension (2.1 %).

Association of high PM2.5 levels with short-term and medium-term lung function recovery in patients with pulmonary lobectomy

The association between exposure to ambient fine particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤ 2.5 μm (PM_2.5) and short- and medium-term lung function recovery (LFR) in patients undergoing lobectomy remains uncertain. This study investigated the associations between PM_2.5 concentrations and LFR in adult patients (n = 526) who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic (VATS) lobectomy in Guangzhou, China between January 2018 and June 2021. All patients underwent at least two spirometry tests. Environmental PM_2.5 concentrations in the same period were collected from the nearest monitoring station. A multiple linear regression (MLR) model was employed to investigate the associations between changes in PM_2.5 concentrations and LFR in patients who underwent lobectomy after adjusting for potential confounders. We assessed short- and medium-term LFR in patients who underwent lobectomy. The three- and 6-month average PM_2.5 concentrations in each patient's residential area were divided into regional mild pollution (PM_2.5 <25 μg/m³), moderate pollution (25 μg/m³ ≤ PM_2.5 <35 μg/m³), and severe pollution (35 μg/m³ ≤ PM_2.5) periods. The MLR model confirmed that PM_2.5 was an independent risk factor affecting short-term forced lung capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), and maximum expiratory flow at 50% vital capacity (MEF₅₀) recovery (adjusted P = 0.041, 0.014, 0.016, respectively). The MLR model confirmed that PM_2.5 was an independent risk factor affecting medium-term MEF₅₀ recovery (adjusted P = 0.046). Compared with the moderate and severe pollution periods, the short- and medium-term LFR (FVC, FEV1, MEF₅₀) of patients in the mild pollution period were faster and better (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, P < 0.001, P = 0.048, P = 0.010, P = 0.013, respectively). Thus, exposure to high PM_2.5 levels was associated with significantly reduced speed and degree of short- and medium-term LFR in patients who underwent lobectomy.

Pathogenic Mechanisms of Secondary Organic Aerosols

Air pollution represents a major health problem and an economic burden. In recent years, advances in air pollution research has allowed particle fractionation and identification of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). SOA is formed from either biogenic or anthropogenic emissions, through a mass transfer from the gaseous mass to the particulate phase in the atmosphere. They can have deleterious impact on health and the mortality of individuals with chronic inflammatory diseases. The pleiotropic effects of SOA could involve different and interconnected pathogenic mechanisms ranging from oxidative stress, inflammation, and immune system dysfunction. The purpose of this review is to present recent findings about SOA pathogenic roles and potential underlying mechanisms focusing on the lungs; the latter being the primary exposed organ to atmospheric pollutants.

Characteristics of secondary organic aerosols tracers in PM2.5 in three central cities of the Yangtze river delta, China

Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) are important atmospheric pollutants that affect air quality, radiation, and human health. In this study, 14 typical SOA tracers were measured in PM_2.5 collected from three central cities of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in the winter of 2014 and the summer of 2015. Among the determined SOA tracers, α/β-pinene SOA tracers contributed 55.9%, followed by isoprene SOA tracers (33.7%), anthropogenic benzene SOA tracer (6.4%) and β-caryophyllene SOA tracer (4.0%). There was no significant difference in the concentration of individual SOA tracers among the three cities (p > 0.05), indicating a high degree of regional consistency. The concentrations of isoprene, α/β-pinene, and toluene SOA tracers were significantly higher in summer than in winter. A correlation of SOA tracers with temperature implies that the isoprene and α/β-pinene SOA tracers in summer were greatly boosted by plant emissions and the high DHOPA in summer could be attributed to evaporation of paint and solvent. In contrast, the elevated β-caryophyllene SOA tracer in winter was likely associated with active biomass burning. Furthermore, we observed a close correlation of summer isoprene and α/β-pinene SOA tracers with sulfate only in Shanghai, which verifies that biogenic SOA formation was facilitated by high concentration of sulfate. The ratios of MGA/MTLs and P/M were applied to reveal the impact of NO_x on SOA formation and the aging degree of SOA, respectively. The MGA/MTLs ratios were comparable for the three cities, but much higher than the background value of this region as expected. The P/M ratios suggest that the aging degree of SOA in the YRD region was generally low, but the winter SOA were fresher than the summer SOA. Our research helps to understand pollution characteristics of SOA tracers in the urban agglomeration.

Ambient volatile organic compounds at a receptor site in the Pearl River Delta region: Variations, source apportionment and effects on ozone formation

We present the continuously measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at a receptor site (Wan Qing Sha, WQS) in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region from September to November of 2017. The average mixing ratios of total VOCs (TVOCs) was 36.3 ± 27.9 ppbv with the dominant contribution from alkanes (55.5%), followed by aromatics (33.3%). The diurnal variation of TVOCs showed a strong photochemical consumption during daytime, resulting in the formation of ozone (O₃). Five VOC sources were resolved by the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, including solvent usage (28.6%), liquid petroleum gas (LPG) usage (24.4%), vehicle exhaust (21.0%), industrial emissions (13.2%) and gasoline evaporation (12.9%). The regional transport air masses from the upwind cities of south China can result in the elevated concentrations of TVOCs. Low ratios of TVOCs/NO_x (1.53 ± 0.88) suggested that the O₃ formation regime at WQS site was VOC-limited, which also confirmed by a photochemical box model with the master chemical mechanism (PBM-MCM). Furthermore, the observation on high-O₃ episode days revealed that frequent O₃ outbreaks at WQS were mainly caused by the regional transport of anthropogenic VOCs especially for aromatics and the subsequent photochemical reactions. This study provides valuable information for policymakers to propose the effective control strategies on photochemical pollution in a regional perspective.

Estimation of Aromatic Secondary Organic Aerosol Using a Molecular Tracer-A Chemical Transport Model Assessment

A modified community multiscale air quality model, which can simulate the regional distributions of 2,3-dihydroxy-4-oxopentanoic acid (DHOPA), a marker species for monoaromatic secondary organic aerosol (SOA), was applied to assess the applicability of using the DHOPA to aromatic SOA mass ratio (f_SOA) from smog chamber experiments to estimate aromatic SOA during a three-week wintertime air quality campaign in urban Shanghai. The modeled daily DHOPA concentrations based on the chamber-derived mass yields agree well with the organic marker field measurements (R = 0.79; MFB = 0.152; and MFE = 0.440). Two-thirds of the DHOPA are from the oxidation of ARO1 (lumped less-reactive aromatic species; mostly toluene), with the rest from ARO2 (lumped more-reactive aromatic species; mostly xylenes). Modeled DHOPA is mainly in the particle phase under ambient organic aerosol (OA) loading but could exhibit significant gas-particle partitioning when a higher estimation of the DHOPA vapor pressure is used. The modeled f_SOA shows a strong dependence on the OA loading when only semivolatile aromatic SOA components are included in the f_SOA calculations. However, this OA dependence becomes weaker when non-volatile oligomers and dicarbonyl SOA products are considered. A constant f_SOA value of ∼0.002 is determined when all aromatic SOA components are included, which is a factor of 2 smaller than the commonly applied chamber-based f_SOA value of 0.004 for toluene. This model-derived f_SOA value does not show much spatial variation and is not sensitive to alternative estimates of DHOPA vapor pressures and SOA yields, and thus provides an appropriate scaling factor to assess aromatic SOA from DHOPA measurements. This result helps refine the quantification of SOA attributable to monoaromatic hydrocarbons in urban environments and thereby facilitates the evaluation of control measures targeting these specific precursors.

The application of land use regression model to investigate spatiotemporal variations of PM2.5 in Guangzhou, China: Implications for the public health benefits of PM2.5 reduction

Understanding the intra-city variation of PM_2.5 is important for air quality management and exposure assessment. In this study, to investigate the spatiotemporal variation of PM_2.5 in Guangzhou, we developed land use regression (LUR) models using data from 49 routine air quality monitoring stations. The R², adjust R² and 10-fold cross validation R² for the annual PM_2.5 LUR model were 0.78, 0.72 and 0.66, respectively, indicating the robustness of the model. In all the LUR models, traffic variables (e.g., length of main road and the distance to nearest ancillary) were the most common variables in the LUR models, suggesting vehicle emission was the most important contributor to PM_2.5 and controlling vehicle emissions would be an effective way to reduce PM_2.5. The predicted PM_2.5 exhibited significant variations with different land uses, with the highest value for impervious surfaces, followed by green land, cropland, forest and water areas. Guangzhou as the third largest city that PM_2.5 concentration has achieved CAAQS Grade II guideline in China, it represents a useful case study city to examine the health and economic benefits of further reduction of PM_2.5 to the lower concentration ranges. So, the health and economic benefits of reducing PM_2.5 in Guangzhou was further estimated using the BenMAP model, based on the annual PM_2.5 concentration predicted by the LUR model. The results showed that the avoided all cause mortalities were 992 cases (95% CI: 221-2140) and the corresponding economic benefits were 1478 million CNY (95% CI: 257-2524) (willingness to pay approach) if the annual PM_2.5 concentration can be reduced to the annual CAAQS Grade I guideline value of 15 μg/m³. Our results are expected to provide valuable information for further air pollution control strategies in China.

Contrasting compositions and sources of organic aerosol markers in summertime PM2.5 from urban and mountainous regions in the North China Plain

Although the chemical compositions and sources of organic aerosols (OAs) have been extensively investigated at the summit of Mt. Tai in the North China Plain (NCP), their vertical distributions and characterizations in the Mt. Tai region is not well known. To better understand the vertical variations of OAs in the urban and mountainous atmosphere, PM_2.5 samples were collected simultaneously on a daytime/nighttime basis at two sites of different altitudes (Taian urban site: 20 m above ground; the summit of Mt. Tai: 1534 m a.s.l.) during the summer of 2016. The concentrations of all the determined chemical compounds (e.g., OC, EC, inorganic ions, saccharides, n-alkanes, PAHs and hopanes) except for biogenic secondary organic aerosol (BSOA) tracers decreased with the increase in sampling height, indicating the relatively larger contribution of anthropogenic pollutants to OAs at the lower heights. The relatively low concentration levels of biomass burning tracers (e.g., levoglucosan, galactosan and mannosan) and the insignificant correlations of levoglucosan with carbonaceous species demonstrated a negligible effect of biomass burning on the mountaintop atmosphere. The enhanced concentrations of BSOA tracers were observed with the increase of height, largely due to the more intensive secondary oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under the stronger radiation conditions at the summit. The daytime concentrations of carbonaceous species, primary sugars, sugar alcohols, PAHs and low molecular weight n-alkanes were significantly higher than those in nighttime at Mt. Tai, suggesting that these chemical compounds at the summit of Mt.Tai aerosols were transported from the ground surface by valley breezes in daytime. There was no correlation between BSOA tracers and relative humidity (RH) or liquid water content (LWC) at both the sites, because both the high RH and LWC can suppress the acid-catalyzed formation of BSOA due to the dilution of the aerosol acidity.

Primary and secondary organic aerosol in an urban/industrial site: Sources, health implications and the role of plastic enriched waste burning

PM10 samples were collected from an urban/industrial site nearby Athens, where uncontrolled burning activities occur. PAHs, monocarboxylic, dicarboxylic, hydroxycarboxylic and aromatic acids, tracers from BVOC oxidation, biomass burning tracers and bisphenol A were determined. PAH, monocarboxylic acids, biomass burning tracers and bisphenol A were increased during autumn/winter, while BSOA tracers, dicarboxylic- and hydroxycarboxylic acids during summer. Regarding aromatic acids, different sources and formation mechanisms were indicated as benzoic, phthalic and trimellitic acids were peaked during summer whereas p-toluic, isophthalic and terephthalic were more abundant during autumn/winter. The Benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent carcinogenic power, carcinogenic and mutagenic activities were calculated showing significant (p < 0.05) increases during the colder months. Palmitic, succinic and malic acids were the most abundant monocarboxylic, dicarboxylic and hydrocarboxylic acids during the entire sampling period. Isoprene oxidation was the most significant contributor to BSOA as the isoprene-SOA compounds were two times more abundant than the pinene-SOA (13.4 ± 12.3 and 6.1 ± 2.9 ng/m³, respectively). Ozone has significant impact on the formation of many studied compounds showing significant correlations with: isoprene-SOA (r = 0.77), hydrocarboxylic acids (r = 0.69), pinene-SOA (r = 0.63),dicarboxylic acids (r = 0.58), and the sum of phthalic, benzoic and trimellitic acids (r = 0.44). PCA demonstrated five factors that could explain sources including plastic enriched waste burning (30.8%), oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids (23.0%), vehicle missions and cooking (9.2%), biomass burning (7.7%) and oxidation of VOCs (5.8%). The results highlight the significant contribution of plastic waste uncontrolled burning to the overall air quality degradation.

Time-resolved characterization of organic compounds in PM2.5 collected at Oki Island, Japan, affected by transboundary pollution of biomass and non-biomass burning from Northeast China

To evaluate the transboundary pollution of organic aerosols from Northeast Asia, a highly time-resolved measurement of organic compounds was performed in March 2019 at Oki Island located in Japan, which is a remote site and less affected by local anthropogenic sources. PM_2.5, water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) concentrations, and WSOC fraction in PM_2.5 showed high values on March 22-23 (high-WSOC period (HWSOC)) when the air mass passed through the area where many fire spots were detected in Northeast China. Biomass burning tracers showed higher concentration, especially levoglucosan exceeded 1 μg/m³ during the HWSOC than the low-WSOC period (LWSOC). Notably, high time-resolved measurements of biomass burning tracers and back trajectory analysis during HWSOC revealed a difference in the variation of lignin pyrolyzed compounds and anhydrous sugars on 22 and 23 March. The air mass passed to different areas in Northeast China in which fire spots were detected, such as the eastern area on the 22nd and the western area on the 23rd. Almost-organic compounds also showed high concentration and strong correlations with levoglucosan and sulfate during HWSOC. Moreover, low-carbon dicarboxylic acids (e.g., adipic acid) and secondary products from anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (e.g., 2,3-dihydroxy-4-oxopentanoic, phthalic, 5-nitrosalicylic acids), also showed a strong correlation with sulfate ions during the HWSOC and LWSOC, respectively. These higher concentrations and strong correlations with levoglucosan and sulfate during the HWSOC propose that their generation could be enhanced by biomass burning. The ratios of organics (e.g., levoglucosan/mannnosan, pinic/3-methylbutane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acids) suggest that the high concentrations of PM_2.5 and WSOC observed during the HWSOC were caused by aged organic aerosols that originated from the combustion of herbaceous plants transported from Northeast China. Our findings indicate that biomass combustion in Northeast China could significantly affect the chemical compositions and the characterization of organic aerosols in downwind regions of Northeast China.

Secondary organic aerosol tracers and related polar organic compounds between urban and rural areas in the Eastern Mediterranean region: source apportionment and the influence of atmospheric oxidants

Fine particle samples were collected during summer at an urban (LIM) and a rural/background (AGM) site of Cyprus. They were analyzed for pinene and isoprene secondary organic aerosol (PSOA-ISOA) tracers, linear dicarboxylic acids (DCAs), hydroxyacids (HAs), aromatic acids (AAs), monocarboxylic acids (MCAs) and levoglucosan by GC/MS with prior 3-step derivatization. DCAs, AAs, MCAs and levoglucosan exhibited significantly higher concentrations (p < 0.05) in LIM, PSOAs and ISOAs in AGM (p < 0.05), whereas mixed trends were found for HAs. Among DCAs, succinic was the most abundant in both sites, accounting for 42.5% and 36.5% of the total DCAs in LIM and AGM respectively, followed by adipic in LIM (20.1%) and azelaic in AGM (22.4%). Malic, phthalic and palmitic acids were the dominant HA, AA and MCA, respectively. Regarding PSOAs, significant differences were observed between the two sites, with the first-generation products accounting for 59.8% of the total measured PSOAs in AGM, but were remarkably lowered (10.3%) in LIM indicating that they were highly oxidized. 2-Methylerythritol was the dominant ISOA tracer in both sites; nevertheless the elevated relative abundance of 2-methylglyceric acid in LIM implies the influences of higher NO_x levels. The increased O₃ levels observed in AGM appear to have a significant impact on SOA formation. Source apportionment tools employed revealed factors related to secondary formation processes including oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids, pinene, isoprene and anthropogenic VOCs and factors associated with primary sources such as biomass burning, plant emissions and/or cooking and motor exhaust, with noteworthy differences observed between the two areas.

Linkage between Particulate Matter Properties and Lung Function in Schoolchildren: A Panel Study in Southern China

While several scientific studies have linked PM_2.5 to decreased lung function, there is still some degree of uncertainty regarding which particulate physicochemical properties are most harmful. We followed a panel of 57 healthy schoolchildren (857 person-days) to investigate the associations between a wide variety of PM_2.5 and lung function in Heshan, China in 2016 for three periods. We monitored the daily concentrations of mass, chemical composition, size, number, surface area, and volume of particulate mixture. Associations of lung function with various particle metrics were estimated using generalized estimating equations and unconstrained distributed lag models. Random forest model was used to compare the relative importance of exposure metrics. Immediate (lag 0) associations of PM_2.5 and carbonaceous aerosols with reduced FEV₁ and MMEF, and accumulation-mode particles with FEV₁ were found. Slightly delayed (lag 1, 2) effects on PEF were particularly prominent for Aitken-mode particles. Possible cumulative (lags 0-2) effects of PM_2.5 and carbonaceous aerosols on PEF and Aitken-mode particles on FEV₁, MMEF, and PEF were observed. This study provides comprehensive evidence that the physicochemical properties of particulate mixtures are associated with reduced lung function in children. Organic carbon (OC) may be an important risk factor for the decreased lung function related to PM exposure.

A case study on the characterization of non-methane hydrocarbons over the South China Sea: Implication of land-sea air exchange

We present the characteristics of non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) over the northern South China Sea (SCS) during a cruise campaign from September to October 2013. The mixing ratios of the total NMHCs ranged from 1.45 to 7.13 ppbv with an average of 3.54 ± 1.81 ppbv. Among the measured NMHCs, alkanes and aromatics were the major groups, accounting for 45.8 ± 8.7% and 28.7 ± 12.3% of the total NMHCs, respectively. Correlations of NMHCs with typical source tracers suggest that light alkanes and benzene were largely contributed by vehicular exhaust via long-range transport, while the other aromatics might be related to industrial sources and marine ship emissions. The spatial variations of NMHCs were observed with higher mixing ratios of NMHCs in the samples collected in the offshore areas than those in the coastal areas. Air mass back-trajectory analysis and diagnostic ratios of NMHCs show that the elevations of the total NMHCs were caused by the regional pollution transport from the southeast coast of China and/or southern China. The ozone formation potentials (OFPs) of NMHCs were calculated and the results show that the aromatics associated with marine ship emissions were the important contributors to the total OFP. This study provides useful information on the interaction between continental outflow and marine atmosphere.

Recent increase in NO2 levels in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula

We report the evolution of tropospheric NO₂ over the south-east of the Iberian Peninsula from 2005 to 2017. We have used hourly NO₂ levels measured at air-quality stations in urban and suburban environments. Annual averages ranged between 14 and 45 μg m^-3, with peaks above 200 μg m^-3. A monthly variation was observed, with higher concentrations in cold months (40-60 μg m^-3) and lower levels in the warm season (13-17 μg m^-3). A diurnal pattern was found in urban and suburban areas. The upward trend in NO₂ observed during the whole period contrasts with the upward trend reported in 2013-2017. The NO₂ tropospheric column levels measured by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument over the Iberian Peninsula indicated a similar behaviour; nevertheless, the largest Spanish metropolitan areas did not show this increase. The mean sea level pressure and wind field data of ERA5 (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) were used to investigate the weather conditions, the NO₂ outputs of the Copernicus Monitoring Services being used for the assessment of the NO₂ spatial distribution. NO₂ regional events, with concentrations in the range 140-150 μg m^-3, and which occurred both in the winter and summer season under anticyclonic conditions, are also described. A local origin is identified in winter, whereas in summer, they are associated with a high-pressure system that blocks Mediterranean outflows towards the Atlantic Ocean. The high NO₂ levels are attributed mainly to two factors: i) local emissions, rather than contributions from the western Mediterranean (or even North Africa), and ii) an increase in the pressure gradient between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean pressure systems, associated with a decrease in wind speed, was found during the last five years compared with the previous eight. Meteorological and chemical changes in mid-latitudes associated with global warming should also be investigated in the future.

Seasonal characteristics of biogenic secondary organic aerosols at Mt. Wuyi in Southeastern China: Influence of anthropogenic pollutants

Thirteen secondary organic aerosol (SOA) tracers of isoprene, monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes were measured for PM_2.5 aerosols collected at the summit of Mt. Wuyi (1139 m, a.s.l.), to investigate their seasonality and formation mechanism. Concentrations of the isoprene and monoterpene SOA tracers were much higher in summer than those in other seasons. In contrast, β-caryophyllinic acid was found to be the lowest in summer. Concentrations of those BSOA tracers showed a positive correlation with temperature (R² = 0.52-0.70), and a negative correlation with relative humidity (R² = 0.43-0.78). Moreover, thermodynamic model (i.e., ISORROPIA-II) calculation results showed that acidity conditions are favorable for BSOA formation. Robust linear correlations between the BSOA tracers and anthropogenic pollutants such as SO₂ (R² = 0.53-0.7) and NO₂ (R² = 0.37-0.54) were observed for all the samples, suggesting that SO₂ and NOx can enhance BSOA production in the remote mountain area of southeast China, which is related to an acid-catalyzed heterogeneous chemistry. Moreover, we also found a significant correlation between the concentrations of the BSOA tracers and levoglucosan especially for β-caryophyllinic acid, indicating that biomass burning plumes from the distant lowland regions could influence the production of BSOA in the mountain free troposphere. Our results clearly demonstrated that anthropogenic emissions in China could enhance BSOA formation in the distant mountain regions.

Occurrence of Aerosol Proteinaceous Matter in Urban Beijing: An Investigation on Composition, Sources, and Atmospheric Processes During the "APEC Blue" Period

Aerosol proteinaceous matter is comprised of a substantial fraction of bioaerosols. Its origins and interactions in the atmosphere remain poorly understood. We present observations of total proteins, combined, and free amino acids (CAAs and FAAs) in fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) samples in urban Beijing before and during the 2014 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. The decreases in proteins, CAAs and FAAs levels were observed after the implementation of restrictive emission controls. Significant changes were observed for the composition profiles in FAAs with the predominance of valine before the APEC and glycine during the APEC, respectively. These variations could be attributed to the influence of sources, atmospheric processes, and meteorological conditions. FAAs (especially valine and glycine) were suggested to be released by the degradation of high molecular weight proteins/polypeptides by atmospheric oxidants (i.e., ozone and free radicals) and nitrogen dioxide. Besides daytime reactions, nighttime chemistry was found to play an important role in the atmospheric formation of valine during the nights, suggesting the possible influence of NO₃ radicals. Our findings provide new insights into the significant impacts of atmospheric oxidation capacity on the occurrence and transformation of aerosol proteinaceous matter which may affect its environmental, climate and health effects.

Exploring the characteristics and sources of carbonaceous aerosols in the agro-pastoral transitional zone of Northern China

Carbonaceous aerosols are linked to severe haze and health effects, while its origins remain still unclear over China. PM_2.5 samples covering four seasons from Jan. 2016 to Jan. 2017 were collected at six sites in Chifeng, a representative agro-pastoral transitional zone of North China focusing on the characteristics and sources of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC). The annual averages of OC, EC were 9.00 ± 7.24 μg m^-3, 1.06 ± 0.79 μg m^-3 with site Songshan in coal mining region exhibited significantly enhanced levels. The residential heating emissions, air stagnation, and secondary organic formation all contributed the higher OC, EC levels in winter. Meanwhile, the impacts from open biomass burning were most intensive in spring. The retroplumes via Lagrangian model highlighted a strong seasonality of regional sources which had more impacts on EC increases. The Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model resolved six primary sources, namely, coal combustion, biomass burning, industrial processes, oil combustion, fugitive dust, and fireworks. Coal combustion and biomass burning comprised large fractions of OC (30.57%, 30.40%) and EC (23.26%, 38.47%) across the sites, while contributions of industrial processes and oil combustion clearly increased in the sites near industrial sources as smelters. PMF and EC tracer method gave well correlated (r=0.65) estimates of Secondary OC (SOC). The proportion of coal combustion and SOC were more enhanced along with PM_2.5 elevation compared to other sources, suggesting their importances during the pollution events.

Seasonal and Annual Source Appointment of Carbonaceous Ultrafine Particulate Matter (PM0.1) in Polluted California Cities

Samples of ultrafine particle matter mass (PM_0.1) were collected over 12 months at three cities in California: Los Angeles, East Oakland, San Pablo, and over six months at Fresno. Molecular markers adjusted for volatility and reactivity were used to calculate PM_0.1 source contributions. Wood burning was a significant source of PM_0.1 organic carbon (OC) during the winter months in northern California (17-47%) but made smaller contributions in other months (0-8%) and was minor in all seasons in Los Angeles (0-5%), except December (17%) during holiday celebrations. Meat cooking was the largest source of PM_0.1 OC across all sites (13-29%), followed by gasoline combustion (7-21%). Motor oil and diesel fuel combustion made smaller contributions to PM_0.1 OC (3-10% and 3-7%, respectively). Unresolved sources accounted for 22-56% of the PM_0.1 OC. The lack of a clear seasonal profile for this unresolved OC suggests that it may be a primary source rather than secondary organic aerosol (SOA). PM_0.1 elemental carbon (EC) was dominated by diesel fuel combustion with less than 15% contribution from other sources. All sources besides wood smoke exhibited relatively constant seasonal source contributions to PM_0.1 OC reflecting approximately constant emissions over the annual cycle. Annual-average source contributions to PM_0.1 OC calculated with traditional molecular markers were similar to the source contributions calculated with the modified molecular markers that account for volatility and reactivity.
