Contamination and ecological risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in surface sediments of mangrove wetlands: A nationwide study in China

A critical review on BDE-209: Source, distribution, influencing factors, toxicity, and degradation

As the most widely used polybrominated diphenyl ether, BDE-209 is commonly used in polymer-based commercial and household products. Due to its unique physicochemical properties, BDE-209 is ubiquitous in a variety of environmental compartments and can be exposed to organisms in various ways and cause toxic effects. The present review outlines the current state of knowledge on the occurrence of BDE-209 in the environment, influencing factors, toxicity, and degradation. BDE-209 has been detected in various environmental matrices including air, soil, water, and sediment. Additionally, environmental factors such as organic matter, total suspended particulate, hydrodynamic, wind, and temperature affecting BDE-209 are specifically discussed. Toxicity studies suggest BDE-209 may cause systemic toxic effects on living organisms, reproductive toxicity, embryo-fetal toxicity, genetic toxicity, endocrine toxicity, neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, and developmental toxicity, or even be carcinogenic. BDE-209 has toxic effects on organisms mainly through epigenetic regulation and induction of oxidative stress. Evidence regarding the degradation of BDE-209, including biodegradation, photodegradation, Fenton degradation, zero-valent iron degradation, chemical oxidative degradation, and microwave radiation degradation is summarized. This review may contribute to assessing the environmental risks of BDE-209 to help develop rational management plans.

Characterization and distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in shellfish in Shenzhen coastal waters and assessment of human health risks

This study aims to investigate the profiles of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in shellfish obtained from Shenzhen coastal waters and assess the potential health risks. We analyzed 74 shellfish samples from eight different species for PBDEs (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -154, -183, -209). The concentrations of total PBDEs in different shellfish species ranged from 2.02 to 360.17 pg g^-1 wet weight, with the highest levels found in Pectinidae, Babylonia areolate, Ostreidae, Perna viridis, Haliotis diversicolor, Corbiculidae, Pinctada margaritifera, and Veneridae in descending order. Among the PBDE congeners analyzed, BDE-47 was the most abundant, followed by BDE-154 and BDE-153. Furthermore, the estimated daily intake of PBDEs through shellfish consumption for Shenzhen residents were between 0.11 and 0.19 ng kg^-1(bw) day^-1. To our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically investigate the profiles of PBDEs in eight different shellfish species from Shenzhen's coastal waters and evaluate the potential human health risks associated with shellfish consumption.

Combined effects of climate change and BDE-209 dietary exposure on the behavioural response of the white seabream, Diplodus sargus

Decabromodiphenyl-ether (BDE-209) is a persistent organic pollutant ubiquitously found in marine environments worldwide. Even though this emerging chemical contaminant is described as highly toxic, bioaccumulative and biomagnifiable, limited studies have addressed the ecotoxicological implications associated with its exposure in non-target marine organisms, particularly from a behavioural standpoint. Alongside, seawater acidification and warming have been intensifying their impacts on marine ecosystems over the years, compromising species welfare and survival. BDE-209 exposure as well as seawater acidification and warming are known to affect fish behaviour, but information regarding their interactive effects is not available. In this study, long-term effects of BDE-209 contamination, seawater acidification and warming were studied on different behavioural traits of Diplodus sargus juveniles. Our results showed that D. sargus exhibited a marked sensitivity in all the behaviour responses after dietary exposure to BDE-209. Fish exposed to BDE-209 alone revealed lower awareness of a risky situation, increased activity, less time spent within the shoal, and reversed lateralization when compared to fish from the Control treatment. However, when acidification and/or warming were added to the equation, behavioural patterns were overall altered. Fish exposed to acidification alone exhibited increased anxiety, being less active, spending more time within the shoal, while presenting a reversed lateralization. Finally, fish exposed to warming alone were more anxious and spent more time within the shoal compared to those of the Control treatment. These novel findings not only confirm the neurotoxicological attributes of brominated flame retardants (like BDE-209), but also highlight the relevance of accounting for the effects of abiotic variables (e.g. pH and seawater temperature) when investigating the impacts of environmental contaminants on marine life.

Systematic characterization of sediment microbial community structure and function associated with anaerobic microbial degradation of PBDEs in coastal wetland

As the widely used flame retardant, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been ubiquitously detected in wetland sediments. Microbial degradation is the importantly natural attenuation process for PBDEs in sediments. In this study, the microbial degradation of PBDEs and inherent alternation of microbial communities were explored in anaerobic sediments from coastal wetland, North China. BDE-47 and BDE-153 could be degraded by the indigenous microbes, with biodegradation following pseudo-first-order kinetic. In sediments, the major genera for BDE-47 and BDE-153 degradation were Paeisporosarcina and Gp7, respectively, in single exposure. However, Marinobacter was dominant genera in the combined exposure to BDE-47 and BDE-153, and competition against Marinobacter existed between BDE-47 and BDE-153 degradation. Analysis of bacterial metabolic function indicated that membrane transport, amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism were included in degradation. This study provides the systematic characterization of the sediment microbial community structure and function associated anaerobic microbial degradation of PBDEs in coastal wetland.

The Typical Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) and Heavy Metals Distributions in a Formal e-Waste Dismantling Site

Understanding the release of pollutants from the formal e-waste dismantling site could provide the basic information and potential risk to guide the normative regulation of the process. In this study, the distribution of typical polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and heavy metals in a relocating site of a formal e-waste dismantling company was firstly investigated down to the saturated zone, with a maximum depth of 3.0 m. The mean concentrations of Σ₁₃PBDEs were ranged from 2.815 to 7.178 ng/g, with a peak value of 7.178 ng/g in storage area. BDE-209 was the predominant congener of PBDEs in the soil, with the value ranged from 1.688 to 2.483 ng/g. A higher pollution of PBDEs and HMs was presented in the storage area. The risk assessment of PBDEs mostly posed a low environmental risk (RQ ≤ 0.01) and pentaBDE was found to be the most harmful driver for the potential environmental risk.

Eco-geochemical evaluation of the Leizhou Peninsula (southern China) and the prediction of heavy metal content in soils

The Leizhou Peninsula is an important base for tropical and subtropical cash crops in China, but still lacks systematic research on regional eco-geochemical characteristics. Here the elemental results show that risk-free soils accounted for 9168 km² and were mainly concentrated in the northern Leizhou Peninsula, while risk-controllable soils occupied 3318 km² and were mostly distributed in the southern part. The contributor of the heavy metals in soils was mainly natural rocks, while the road traffic dust and coal combustion were also responsible for the origin of anomalous elements Cd, Cr, and Ni (0.004-1.8, 0.76-590, and 0.14-372 mg/kg, respectively). 90.15 % of the Leizhou Peninsula plants were not obviously contaminated, yet the comparison between the data collected in 1997 and 2018 allows us to speculate that Ni in the studied soils will reach the risk screening value in 7 years, followed by Cr and Cu in 39 and 92 years, respectively.

Spatial distribution of microplastics pollution in sediments and surface waters of the Aras River and reservoir: An international river in Northwestern Iran

Microplastics (MPs) in freshwater environments have been recognized as one of the important sources of plastic contamination in marine ecosystems. Reducing the amount and spatial distribution of MPs reaching the sea through accumulation behind dams remains unclear. In this study we analyzed the spatial distribution of sediment and surface water MPs in the Aras Dam and from nineteen upstream and downstream locations of the Dam in the Aras River. The MPs abundance ranged from 32 to 528 items/kg dry weight (mean 217.8 ± 132.6) and 1 to 43 items/m³ (mean 12.8 ± 10.5) in the sediment and surface water stations, respectively. MPs abundance in surface waters collected within the Dam reservoir was significantly higher than those found either upstream or downstream (P < 0.05). For sediments, reservoir MPs concentration was generally higher than upstream and downstream, although their differences were not significant. High MPs concentration was observed in the vicinity of urban areas. Moreover, MPs abundance was positively correlated with total organic carbon (TOC) and clay content (P < 0.01). GAM analysis revealed that clay is the most important variable with lowest Akaike information criterion (AIC) and explained 61.3 % of deviance (R-sq.(adj) = 0.344) in MPs abundance. MP particles ranged from 0.1 to 5 mm in size and were dominated by fibers (53.5 %), black color (24 %) and PE polymer (36.6 %). Our results highlight the high MPs distribution in the Aras River and demonstrate that they accumulate in the surface waters behind the Dam. Consequently, the fate and effects of MPs in international rivers is one of the most politicized issues between countries with a common boundary and therefore needs joint management policies that help mitigate this insidious problem.

Lipid metabolism dysfunction and toxicity of BDE-47 exposure in white adipose tissue revealed by the integration of lipidomics and metabolomics

2,2',4,4'-Tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) is one of the main and toxic congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) family and considered to be associated with the development of obesity. However, little is known about its direct metabolic alterations on white adipose tissue (WAT). In this study, we evaluated the impacts of BDE-47 exposure on WAT dysfunctions in mice fed with low-fat diet (LFD) or high-fat diet (HFD) by the integration analysis of mass spectrometry-based metabolomics and lipidomics. The results showed that BDE-47 exposure together with HFD intervention induced adipocyte hypertrophy and accelerated the weight gain of WAT, whereas no obvious effects were observed in mice fed with LFD. The combination of BDE-47 and HFD induced intolerable levels of metabolites in purine and glutathione metabolism pathways, sufficient to increase oxidative stress in WAT. Importantly, continuous exposure of BDE-47 in HFD -fed mice caused lipid metabolism dysfunction by promoting fatty acid uptake and de novo synthesis and suppressing β-oxidation, ultimately leading to the accumulation of saturated fatty acids, triglycerides in WAT. At the same time, BDE-47 increased inflammatory infiltration into WAT, consequently promoting the productions of cytokines, TNFα and IL-6, in HFD fed mice. It is found that dysfunction of lipid metabolism and increasing inflammation led to lipotoxicity in WAT and severe obesity in HFD mice. Taken together, our findings deepen the understanding of the obesogenic effect of BDE-47 and help identify new potential strategies for clarifying the molecular and metabolic mechanisms.

Spatial distribution, homologue patterns and ecological risks of chlorinated paraffins in mangrove sediments along the South China Coast

The spatial distribution, homologue patterns, and ecological risks of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) were investigated in sediments from sixteen mangrove wetlands along the South China Coast (SCS). The total concentrations of CPs in mangrove sediments from Guangdong, Fujian, Guangxi, and Hainan were in the range of 933-4760, 619-2300, 375-1550, and 271-658 ng/g dry weight, respectively. The contamination levels and spatial distribution of short-chain and medium-chain CPs (SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively) in mangrove sediments were mainly affected by local population scale and CP industries. The dominant CP patterns in sediments were C₁₀-₁₁Cl_6-8 and C₁₄Cl_7-9 for SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively. Redundancy analysis, based on CP levels and several potential influencing factors showed that MCCPs/SCCPs ratio was the main factor affecting the accumulation of CPs in mangrove sediments. Additionally, MCCP concentrations were significantly correlated with total organic carbon (TOC), indicating that TOC might affect MCCP accumulation in mangrove sediments. Risk assessments indicated that CPs would pose medium ecological risks to sediment dwelling organisms in nearly one-third of the sampling sites. This is the first comprehensive report of the sedimentary SCCPs and MCCPs in mangrove wetlands along the SCS and highlights the need for more sediment toxicity data for CPs.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in coastal wetlands: A review of their occurrences, toxic effects, and biogeochemical cycling

Coastal wetlands, such as mangroves, seagrass beds, and salt marshes, are highly threatened by increasing anthropic pressures, including chemical pollution. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have attracted attention in these particularly vulnerable ecosystems, due to their bioaccumulative, pervasive, and ecotoxic behavior. This article reviews and summarizes available information regarding current levels, biogeochemical cycling, and effects of POPs on coastal wetlands. Sediment POP levels were compared with international quality guidelines, revealing many areas where compounds could cause damage to biota. Despite this, toxicological studies on some coastal wetland plants and microorganisms showed a high tolerance to those levels. These taxonomic groups are likely to play a key role in the cycling of the POPs, with an active role in their accumulation, immobilization, and degradation. Toxicity and biogeochemical processes varied markedly along three main axes; namely species, environmental conditions, and type of pollutant. While more focused research on newly and unintentionally produced POPs is needed, mainly in salt marshes and seagrass beds, with the information available so far, the environmental behavior, spatial distribution, and toxicity level of the studied POPs showed similar patterns across the three studied ecosystems.

Competitive microbial degradation among PBDE congeners in anaerobic wetland sediments: Implication by multiple-line evidences including compound-specific stable isotope analysis

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widespread contaminants in the environment. Microbial reductive debromination is one of the important attenuation processes for PBDEs in the anaerobic sediments. This study first investigated the interaction between BDE-47 and BDE-153 during the microbial degradation in wetland sediments by the multiple-line approaches including biodegradation kinetics, microbial community structures and stable isotope composition. BDE-47 and BDE-153 biodegradation fitted pseudo-zero-order kinetics, with the higher degradation rates in single than combined exposure, indicating the mutual inhibition in co-exposure condition. BDE-47 and BDE-153 shared the common dehalogenators (genus Dehalococcoides and Acinetobacter) with enrichment in combined exposure, indicating the potential competition in dehalogenating bacteria during biodegradation. Microbial degradation could lead to the isotopic fractionation of BDE-47 and BDE-153, with the smaller changes in δ¹³C in combined than single exposure. The apparent kinetic isotope effect of carbon (AKIE_C) was different between BDE-47 and BDE-153 in single exposure, whilst identical in combined exposure, indicating the similar degradation mechanism for BDE-47 and BDE-153 in co-exposure condition. These results revealed that the competition on microbial degradation occurred among PBDEs in co-exposure condition, which was important for the comprehensive risk assessment of simultaneous exposure to multiple PBDE congeners in the environment.

PAEs and PBDEs in plastic fragments and wetland sediments in Yangtze estuary

Phthalates (PAEs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used as additives in various plastic products. Because of their ubiquity and potential hazards to the environment, they have attracted widespread attention. This research supports the addition critical data of the concentration and distribution of PAEs and PBDEs in the plastic fragments and wetland sediments in Yangtze Estuary. The concentrations of Σ₇PAEs and Σ₉PBDEs in the plastic samples in Yangtze Estuary wetlands were 26.8-4241.8 μg/g and n.d. (no detectable) to 250.1 μg/g, respectively. The sixteen PAEs and eight PBDEs varied from 35.9 to 36225.2 ng/g and 3.9-253.0 ng/g in sediment samples. The dominant types of these chemicals in plastic and sediment samples were diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), dioctyl phthalate (DEHP) and BDE-209. According to correlation analysis and principal component analysis, the major sources of additives in sediment were associated with the leak from plastic fragment and microplastic. Based on the equilibrium partitioning theory and Sediment Quality Guidelines (SeQGs), the ecological risk of PAEs (high risk) and PBDEs (moderate risk) were evaluated. Overall, the investigated area has been moderately polluted by additives and microplastics; therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the control of environmental input of plastic waste.

Spatial Distribution and Ecological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Sediments of a Heavily Polluted Maozhou River, Southern China

In this study, eighteen 3.30-m-long sediment profiles were sampled in Maozhou River. In order to investigate the sediment pollution status and potential sources of heavy metals, we performed heavy metal contents, grain size, organic matter concentration, moisture concentration and total phosphorus analysis, and assessed the ecological risk of heavy metal pollution in the study area using enrichment coefficient, geo-accumulation index and potential ecological risk index. The results indicated that the heavy metal concentrations in the Maozhou River sediments were 3.73-417 times higher than the soil background in Guangdong Province and the average concentrations were 0.447-15.1 times higher than Chinese lacustrine sediments. The Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb contents were significantly correlated with each other (p < 0.01), indicating similar deposition process. In addition, spatial and vertical distribution of heavy metals showed similar variation patterns and extreme high contents are distributed in the interchange area. The ecological risk of Maozhou River was much higher than other river sediments in Guangdong Province, especially for Cu, Cd and Ni. The variation pattern of potential ecological risk index is similar with that of heavy metals and the assessment results indicated high ecological risk in the Maozhou River sediments, which is in good agreement with the EF and I_geo results. This study would provide some references for the treatment of heavy metals' pollution in Maozhou River.

Sediment Records of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) from the Anhui Province Section of Yangtze River, China

This study investigated the temporal changes of PBDEs in the sediment cores from the Anhui Province section of Yangtze River (YR), China. The dramatic increase of ∑Br₃-Br₉-BDEs and BDE-209 concentrations in cores in the period of ca. 1990-2008 was consistent with the booming of regional and national production and consumption of household appliances and electronics. Following declines in BDE-209 and ∑Br₃-Br₉-BDEs concentrations can be associated with the deceasing use of legacy commercial PBDE mixtures in recent years. Compared with the different regions around the world, sediments in the YR were moderately polluted by PBDEs. The levels and the detection rates of BDE-209 were highest among the detected PBDEs single congener. The composition analysis indicated that Deca-BDE, Octa-BDE, and Penta-BDE were the dominant forms in the YR. The increasing trends of both BDE-209 and ∑Br₃-Br₉-BDEs in the YR during 1990s and 2000s largely reflected the time periods for transferring PBDE sources from the developed countries to China. TOC and finer particles were strongly correlated with distributions of PBDEs in sediments.

Identification and Prediction of Wetland Ecological Risk in Key Cities of the Yangtze River Economic Belt: From the Perspective of Land Development

Rapid urbanization aggravates the degradation of wetland function. However, few studies have quantitatively analyzed and predicted the comprehensive impacts of different scenarios and types of human activities on wetland ecosystems from the perspective of land development. Combined with the Habitat Risk Assessment (HRA) model and the Cellular Automata (Ca)-Markov model, this study quantitatively measured the impact intensity and spatial distribution of different types of human activities on the wetland ecosystem in 2015, simulated and predicted the ecological pressure on the wetland in 2030, and identified the ecological risk hotspots of the Yangtze River waterfront along the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Economic Belt. The results showed that the ecological risk of wetlands in the study area was low in the urban core and high in the suburbs. Construction activities posed a greater risk to wetlands. The intensity of human activities in the ecological protection scenario will be significantly lower than that in the natural development scenario in 2030. The waterfront in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River will face more ecological risks. The results of the study can provide theoretical and technical support for wetland conservation policy formulation and waterfront development in the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

Field study on bioaccumulation and translocation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the sediment-plant system of a national nature reserve, North China

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are the ubiquitous contaminants in the coastal wetlands, with high persistence and toxicity. Environmental behaviors of PBDEs in sediment-plant system is a hot research area, where much uncertainties still occurred in field environment. In this study, the sediments and Suaeda heteroptera were synchronously collected to investigate the bioaccumulation and translocation of PBDEs in Liaohe coastal wetland. Mean concentrations of PBDEs in sediments, roots, stems and leaves were 8.37, 6.64, 2.42 and 1.40 ng/g d.w., respectively. Tissue-specific accumulation of PBDEs were detected in Suaeda heteroptera, with predominant accumulation in roots. Congener patterns of PBDEs were similar between sediments and roots, demonstrating root uptake as the key pathway of PBDE bioaccumulation. The proportions of lower brominated congeners increased from roots to leaves, implying the congener-specific translocation. Meanwhile, the lower brominated congeners exhibited higher sediment-tissue bioaccumulation (AFs) and translocation factors (TFs) compared to higher brominated congeners in Suaeda heteroptera, further verifying their preferential translocation. AFs and TFs of PBDEs were both not correlated with their log K_ow, which was inconsistent with those of laboratory studies, reflecting the complicated behaviors of PBDEs in field environment. This is the first comprehensive report on bioaccumulation and translocation of PBDEs within Suaeda heteroptera in Liaohe coastal wetland.

Umbilical cord serum PBDE concentrations and child adiposity measures at 7 years

BACKGROUND

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) exist extensively in the environment. Toxicological studies suggested PBDEs may interfere with adipogenic pathways. However, few human evidence addressed PBDE exposures in utero related to childhood adiposity.

OBJECTIVE

We assessed associations between PBDEs concentrations in cord serum and childhood adiposity measures at 7 years.

METHODS

Among 318 mother-child pairs from Sheyang Mini Birth Cohort Study (SMBCS) in China, nine PBDE congener concentrations were quantified in umbilical cord serum using gas chromatography-negative chemical ionization mass spectrometry (GC-NCI-MS). Anthropometric indicators of children aged 7 years were measured, including weight, height and waist circumference. Age and sex-specific body mass index (BMI) z scores were calculated based on World Health Organization (WHO)'s child growth standards. Multivariate linear and logistic regression models adjusted for putative confounders were performed to examine associations between PBDE congeners and adiposity parameters.

RESULTS

BDE-209 was the most abundant congener of PBDEs with a median value of 19.5 ng/g lipid. The geometric mean values of nine PBDE congeners ranged from below limit of detection (LOD) to 18.1 ng/g lipid, and the detection rates were 46.5%~96.5%. Cord serum BDE-153 and BDE-154 concentrations were associated with lower childhood BMI z score (regression coefficient, β=-0.15, 95% confidence interval: -0.29, -0.02; p=0.02; β=-0.23, 95%CI: -0.43, -0.03; p=0.03, respectively) and lower waist circumference (β=-0.75 cm, 95%CI: -1.43, -0.06; p=0.03; β=-1.22 cm, 95%CI: -2.23, -0.21; p=0.02, respectively), after controlling for potential confounders. Moreover, prenatal BDE-154 exposure was related to a decreased obesity risk of children aged 7 years (odds ratio, OR=0.46, 95%CI: 0.22, 0.94; p=0.03). These effects were only observed among boys in sex-straitified analyses.

CONCLUSIONS

Cord serum BDE-153 and BDE-154 concentrations were related to reduced adiposity measures at 7 years of age. Further evidence regarding the impacts of prenatal PBDE exposures on childhood development is warranted.

Contaminated aquatic sediments

Aquatic sediments are contaminated by different anthropogenic activities and natural deposition. This review manuscript has discussed on published manuscript in 2019 based on monitoring and identification of contaminants, GIS application and isotopic evaluation for monitoring of pollutants, physicochemical and biochemical fate and transport of the pollutants as well as remediation and toxicity analysis so that environmental and ecological impacts due to pollution can be minimized.

Knowledge gaps in ecotoxicology studies of marine environments in Pacific Island Countries and Territories - A systematic review

The Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) are heavily dependent on the marine resources for food security, employment, government revenue and economic development, hence the concern about the potential exposure of these resources to pollutants. The main goal of this review was to identify ecotoxicology studies published that were done in PICTs. Four major gaps were identified: i) a quantitative gap, with low number of studies published on the PICTs; ii) a geographic gap, where ecotoxicology studies have unevenly covered the different PICTs; iii) a temporal gap, as no biological effect monitoring study has so far been published for the PICTs; and, iv) a pollutants gap, as all of the PICTs studies focused mainly on environmental monitoring studying on average two types of pollutants (heavy metals and pesticides) per PICT only. We suggest, therefore, the potential risk to the marine environment to be estimated by assessing the fate of pollutants via chemical and biological effect monitoring.

Denitrifier communities differ in mangrove wetlands across China

To explore the geographical variations in the nosZ-denitrifier community and the underlying influential factors, surface sediments were collected from six mangroves across China, including Yunxiao (YX), Futian (FT), Fangchenggang (FCG), Zhanjiang (ZJ), Dongzhaigang (DZG), and Dongfang (DF). The nosZ gene abundance in mangrove sediments were 1.60 × 10⁵-1.17 × 10⁶ copies g^-1 dry sediment, with a higher density in Avicennia marina forest than the mudflat. Denitrifier community richness and diversity increased with decreasing latitude based on the Chao1 richness and Shannon diversity index, with the highest diversity being observed in the DF mangrove. The denitrifier communities could be classified into three groups including south DF mangrove, middle FCG, ZJ and DZG mangroves, and north YX and FT mangroves based on HCA and PCoA analysis. The nosZ OTUs could be divided into seven distinct clusters with different proportionality characteristics among mangroves. Environmental factors (TN, TOC, and salinity) collectively shape denitrifier communities in mangrove sediments.

Assessing microbial degradation degree and bioavailability of BDE-153 in natural wetland soils: Implication by compound-specific stable isotope analysis

Microbial degradation is an important pathway for the attenuation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in natural soils. In this study, the compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) was applied to characterize microbial degradation of BDE-153, one of the prevailing and toxic PBDE congeners, in natural wetland soils. During the 45-day incubation, the residual percentages of BDE-153 decreased to 67.9% and 73.6% in non-sterilized soils spiked with 1.0 and 5.0 μg/g, respectively, which were both much lower than those in sterilized soils (96.0% and 97.2%). This result indicated that microbial degradation could accelerate BDE-153 elimination in wetland soils. Meanwhile, the significant carbon isotope fractionation was observed in non-sterilized soils, with δ¹³C of BDE-153 shifting from -29.4‰ to -26.7‰ for 1.0 μg/g and to -27.2‰ for 5.0 μg/g, respectively, whilst not in sterilized soils. This phenomenon indicated microbial degradation could induce stable carbon isotope fractionation of BDE-153. The carbon isotope enrichment factor (ε_c) for BDE-153 microbial degradation was first determined as -7.58‰, which could be used to assess the microbial degradation and bioavailability of BDE-153 in wetland soils. Based on δ¹³C and ε_c, the new methods were developed to dynamically and quantitatively estimate degradation degree and bioavailability of BDE-153 during degradation process, respectively, which could exclude interference of physical processes. This work revealed that CSIA was a promising method to investigate in situ microbial degradation of PBDEs in field studies.

Organochlorine Pesticides in Sediment of Zhang River Estuary Mangrove National Natural Reserve: The Implication of Its Source Change in China’s Mangroves

Seventeen organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were examined in surface sediments from Zhang River Estuary Mangrove National Natural Reserve, which is situated in the Fujian province in southeast China. The range of ∑OCPs concentration was 0.29–25.41 ng/g dry weight (average 4.53 ng/g), ∑HCHs was 0.008–0.906 ng/g dry weight (average 0.240 ng/g), and ∑DDTs was ND–4.743 (average 0.664 ng/g). The concentrations of the HCH isomers were observed in the following decreasing order: α-HCH > β-HCH > δ-HCH > γ-HCH, and that of the DDT isomers were as in the following order: p,p’-DDT > p,p’-DDE > p,p’-DDD. According to the analysis of the isomer ratios, γ-HCH (lindane) and endosulfan were rarely used recently around this mangrove forest. Instead, the ratios of (DDD+DDE)/DDT showed that DDTs were still illegally used. Compared with other mangroves in China, the residue level and ecological risk of the OCPs in surface sediment from ZREMNNR are both at a low level. Based on stepwise regression analysis, current fruit planting, as well as mariculture in developed areas and vegetable planting in developing areas, had a positive relation with DDT residues in mangrove sediment in China. Oppositely, HCH residues in mangrove sediment were derived from historical consumption, and generally the higher levels occurred in the developed areas. Through this study, we help to close the knowledge gap of OCPs in China’s mangroves and provide a possible management implication for sustainable development in the future.

The distribution, characteristics and ecological risks of microplastics in the mangroves of Southern China

During the production, use and disposal of plastic products, microplastics (MPs) are dispersed into the surrounding environment and have inevitable impacts on mangrove ecosystems in estuaries and offshore areas. In the mangroves of Southern China, the systematic evaluation of the distribution, characteristics and ecological risks of MPs is lacking. In this study, surface sediments (0-5 cm depth) were collected from six representative mangroves in China to explore MP contamination and its associated ecological risk. Based on the results, MP concentrations of MPs in mangrove sediments were as follows: FT (2249 ± 747 items/kg), ZJ (736 ± 269 items/kg), DF (649 ± 443 items/kg), DZG (431 ± 170 items/kg), YX (424 ± 127 items/kg), and FCG (227 ± 173 items/kg). The higher MP concentration in the Futian mangrove was mainly related to inputs from the Pearl River, the third largest river in China. The predominant shape, colour, and size of MPs were fibrous, white-transparent, and 500-5000 μm, respectively. The main MP polymer types were polypropylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene. Degradation artefacts were present on surface of MPs as well as metallic and non-metallic elements. MPs concentration in mangrove sediments increased with increasing social-economic development of surrounding districts, which indicated the clear influence of anthropogenic activity on MP pollution in these mangroves. Furthermore, total organic carbon (TOC) and silt content were positively associated with MPs (P < 0.01), indicating a facilitatory role in deposition of MPs in mangroves. Based on a comprehensive evaluation using the potential ecological risk factor (E_i), potential ecological risk (RI), polymer risk index (H) and pollution load index (PLI), MPs were found to present ecological risks in these mangroves, with the highest risk occurring in the Futian mangrove.

The distribution and risk of mercury in Shenzhen mangroves, representative urban mangroves affected by human activities in China

Sediments were collected from urban mangroves in Shenzhen, China, including Shajing (SJ) and Xixiang (XX) featured with industrial district; Futian (FT) and Baguang (BG) featured with central business district and ecological preserve, respectively. Distributions, pollution levels and human health risks of Hg were explored. In both surface and vertical sediments, mean Hg concentration was highest in SJ mangrove, which may be due to its proximity to point-source discharge of Maozhou River in Pearl River Estuary, China. Sediment properties (pH, salinity, TOC and particle size) had limited impact on Hg accumulation due to their non-significant correlations. Geo-accumulation index, pollution load index, potential ecological risk index, and the ecological risk assessment code showed the highest ecological risk in SJ mangrove, followed by XX, FT, and BG mangroves. The assessment of human health risks showed that public experience little adverse health risk due to exposure to Hg polluted sediment in urban mangroves.

Occurrence and congener profiles of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in green mussels (Perna viridis) collected from northern South China Sea and the associated potential health risk

Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) contamination has become a major concern over the effects on human health. In the present study, we collected widely consumed green mussels (Perna viridis) samples from the northern South China Sea (NSCS) to investigate the occurrence, spatial distribution, congener profiles as well as potential risk of 18 PBDEs. All the target PBDEs were detected in green mussel samples, indicating their ubiquitous distribution. The concentrations of the total 18 PBDE_S (ΣPBDEs) in all samples varied from 6.96 to 55.6 ng/g lipid weight (lw), with BDE-47 and BDE-209 being the predominant PBDE congeners. Overall, the ΣPBDEs pollution in green mussels from NSCS was at a moderate to high level in comparison with the PBDEs pollution worldwide. The dietary exposure of the local population in South China to PBDEs via consuming green mussels was estimated to be 0.30-0.80 ng/kg body weight (bw)/day. Evaluation of the exposure risk for BDE-47, 99, 153 and 209 indicated that health risks due to green mussel consumption are substantially lower than the U.S. EPA minimum concern level.

Temporal and seasonal variation and ecological risk evaluation of flame retardants in seawater and sediments from Bohai Bay near Tianjin, China during 2014 to 2017

Seawater and sediment samples were collected from 2014 to 2017 at Bohai Bay near Tianjin, China. The median concentration of ΣOPFRs was 2202 ng/l in the seawater from 2017. ΣAlkyl-OPFRs was the predominant constitution in the seawater with a median contribution of nearly 80%, and ΣCl-OPFRs was the major component in the sediment. Regarding BFRs, BDE-209 was the principal one in the sediment. The levels of TEP, TCEP and TBEP in sediments displayed significantly seasonal variations. The summer concentration of TEP was higher than that in both the spring and autumn, and concerning TCEP and TBEP, their lowest concentration occurred in summer. The concentration of ΣOPFRs experienced a rapid increasing during 2014-2016 due to more emissions of OPFRs. The ecological risk evaluation of OPFRs and BFRs suggested a moderate and high risk to the investigated marine region under the high exposure scenario, respectively.
