Emergent contaminants in sediments and fishes from the Tamsui River (Taiwan): Their spatial-temporal distribution and risk to aquatic ecosystems and human health

Association between exposure to water sources contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and cancer risk: A systematic review

The recent scientific focus on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has stemmed from their recognized genotoxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic properties. This systematic review seeks to evaluate the nexus between exposure to water sources contaminated with PAHs and the associated cancer risk among global populations, encompassing both children and adults. Web of Science (WoS), Cochrane Library, PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, and Google Scholar, were searched following the PRISMA guidelines, until December 31, 2023. Quality assessment of the selected studies was performed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The increased lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) attributed to PAH exposure through ingestion and dermal absorption was thoroughly examined across diverse age groups. After extensive searching, screening, and eligibility, 30 articles were included in this review, which was conducted in different parts of the world, including Nigeria (n = 11), China (n = 7), India (n = 4), Iran (n = 3), South Africa (n = 2), Italy (n = 1), Colombia (n = 1), and Iraq (n = 1). Our analysis underscores Nigeria's alarming prevalence of PAH contamination in its rivers, groundwaters, and seawater. Remarkably, the highest cancer risk was identified among children and adults, notably in proximity to the Atlas Cove jetty (seawater) and various Nigerian rivers. This elevated risk is primarily attributed to the combined effects of ingestion and dermal absorption. Furthermore, our findings emphasize the prominent role of combustion-derived and pyrogenic sources of PAH in the examined aquatic ecosystems. This study unequivocally establishes that PAH-contaminated water sources significantly amplify the risk of cancer among both children and adults. The extent of risk variation is influenced by the specific water source, duration of exposure, and age group. Consequently, proactive identification of contaminated water sources and their pollution origins, coupled with targeted educational campaigns, holds promise for reducing the global burden of PAH-related cancer.

An extensive investigation on human risk associated with PAHs in fish and sediment in Bushehr, Northern of Persian Gulf

Here, a comprehensive study was designed to estimate the human risk assessment attributed to exposure of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)in sediment and fish in most polluted shore area in north of Persian Gulf. To this end, a total of 20 sediment and inhabitual Fish, as one of most commercial fish, samples were randomly collected from 20 different stations along Bushehr Province coastline. The 16 different components of PAHs were extracted from sediment and edible parts of inhabitual fish and measured with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC), respectively. In addition, dietary daily intake (DDI) values of PAHs via ingestion Indian halibut and the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) attributed to human exposure to sediments PAHs via (a) inhalation, (b) ingestion, and (c) dermal contact for two groups of ages: children (1-11 years) and adults (18-70 years) were estimated. The results indicated that all individual PAHs except for Benzo(b)flouranthene (BbF) and Benzo(ghi) perylene (BgP) were detected in different sediment sample throughout the study area with average concentration between 2.275 ± 4.993 mg.kg-1 dw. Furthermore, Naphthalene (Nap) with highest average concentration of 3.906 ± 3.039 mg.kg-1 dw was measured at the Indian halibut. In addition, the human risk analysis indicated that excess cancer risk (ECR) attributed to PAHs in sediment and fish in Asaluyeh with high industrial activities on oil and derivatives were higher the value recommended by USEPA (10-6). Therefore, a comprehensive analysis on spatial distribution and human risk assessment of PAHs in sediment and fish can improve the awareness on environmental threat in order to aid authorities and decision maker to find a sustainable solution.

High-throughput analytical methodology of monoalkyl phthalate esters and the composite risk assessment with their parent phthalate esters in aquatic organisms and seawater

A sensitive, robust, and highly efficient analytical methodology involving solid phase extraction coupled to ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry was successfully established to detect 13 monoalkyl phthalate esters (MPAEs) in aquatic organisms and seawater. After the organisms were preprocessed using enzymatic deconjugation with β-glucuronidase, extraction, purification, and qualitative and quantitative optimization procedures were performed. Under optimal conditions, the limits of detection varied from 0.07 to 0.88 μg/kg (wet weight) and 0.04-1.96 ng/L in organisms and seawater, respectively. Collectively, MPAEs achieved acceptable recovery values (91.0-102.7%) with relative standard deviations less than 10.4% and matrix effects ranging from 0.93 to 1.07 in the above matrix. Furthermore, MPAEs and phthalate esters were detected by the developed methodology and gas chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometer in practical samples, respectively. Mono-n-butyl phthalate and mono-iso-butyl phthalate were the most predominant congeners, accounting for 24.8-35.2% in aquatic organisms and seawater. Comprehensive health and ecological risks were higher after the MPAEs were incorporated than when phthalate esters were considered separately, and greater than their risk threshold. Therefore, the risks caused by substances and their metabolites in multiple media, with analogous structure-activity relationships, should be considered to ensure the safety of aquatic organisms and consumers.

Survey on the Environmental Risks of Bisphenol A and Its Relevant Regulations in Taiwan: An Environmental Endocrine-Disrupting Chemical of Increasing Concern

Bisphenol A (BPA) has been identified as one of the endocrine disruptors or endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Due to its massive production (over 700,000 tons per year) and the extensive use of BPA-based plastics (i.e., polycarbonate and epoxy resin) in Taiwan, it was thus included as a toxic substance by the Ministry of Environment. This work surveyed the updated information about the production of BPA and its environmental distribution in Taiwan over the past decade. Furthermore, the regulatory strategies and countermeasures for managing the environmental risks of BPA by the Taiwan government were summarized to show the cross-ministerial efforts under the relevant acts, including the Toxic and Concerned Chemical Substances Control Act (TCCSCA), the Food Sanitation Management Act (FSMA) and the Commodity Inspection Act (CIA). The findings showed that most monitoring data were far below the acceptable risks. However, people may pose an adverse threat to the aquatic environment and human health via ecological and food chains. In addition, some countermeasures were further recommended to echo the international actions on environmental endocrine disruptors in recent years.

Occurrence and ecological risks of microplastics and phthalate esters in organic solid wastes: In a landfill located nearby the Persian Gulf

Landfill sites are the main source of plastic waste. Thus, municipal solid waste (MSW) in landfills may act as a reservior of microplastics (MPs) and related pollutants such as phthalate esters (PAEs) into surrounding environment. However, there is limited information on MPs and PAEs in landfill sites. Levels of MPs and PAEs in organic solid waste disposed in a landfill of Bushehr port were investigated for the first time in this study. The mean MPs and PAEs levels in organic MSW samples were 12.3 items/g and 7.99 μg/g, respectively, and the mean PAEs concentration in MPs was 87.5 μg/g. The highest number of MPs was related to the size classes of >1000 μm and <25 μm. The highest dominant type, color, and shape of MPs in organic MSW were nylon, white/transparent, and fragments, respectively. Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP) were the dominant compounds of PAEs in organic MSW. Based on the finding of present study, MPs showed a high hazard index (HI). DEHP, dioctyl phthalate (DOP), and DiBP demonstrated high-level hazards for sensitive organisms in water. This work illustrated considerable MPs and PAEs levels from an uncontrolled landfill without adequate protection, possibly contributing to their release into the environment. The sites of landfill located near marine environments, such as Bushehr port landfill adjacent to the Persian Gulf, may indicate critical threats to marine organisms and the food chain. Continuous landfills control and monitoring, especially the ones near the coastal area, is highly recommended to prevent further environmental pollution.

Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate-induced neurobehavioural transformation is associated with altered glutathione biosynthesis and neurodegeneration in zebrafish brain

The contamination of life-sustaining environments with synthetic pollutants such as plastic-derived compounds has increased at an alarming rate in recent decades. Among such contaminants, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is an extensively used compound in plastics and plastic products to make them flexible. DEHP causes several adverse effects such as reproductive toxicity leading to infertility, miscarriage and litter size reduction, disruption of the thyroid endocrine system, oxidative stress, neurodevelopmental defect and cognitive impairment. An aquatic environment is a fragile site, where the accumulation of DEHP poses a significant threat to living organisms. In this context, the present study focused on whether the neurobehavioural transformation following exposure to DEHP is an outcome of augmented oxidative stress and neuromorphological alteration in the zebrafish brain. Our preliminary findings advocate that DEHP acts as a typical neurotoxicant in inducing neurobehavioural transformation in zebrafish. Furthermore, our study also supports the idea that DEHP itself acts as a potent neurotoxicant by altering the glutathione biosynthetic pathway through the induction of oxidative stress in the zebrafish brain. Similarly, our findings also link the abovementioned neurobehavioural transformation and oxidative stress with augmented neuronal pyknosis and chromatin condensation in the periventricular grey zone of the zebrafish brain following chronic exposure to DEHP. Therefore, the overall conclusion of the present study advocates the potential role of DEHP in inducing neuropathological manifestation in the zebrafish brain. Future research directed towards elucidating the neuroprotective efficacy of natural compounds against DEHP-induced neurotoxicity may provide a new line of intervention.

Combined effects of climate change and BDE-209 dietary exposure on the behavioural response of the white seabream, Diplodus sargus

Decabromodiphenyl-ether (BDE-209) is a persistent organic pollutant ubiquitously found in marine environments worldwide. Even though this emerging chemical contaminant is described as highly toxic, bioaccumulative and biomagnifiable, limited studies have addressed the ecotoxicological implications associated with its exposure in non-target marine organisms, particularly from a behavioural standpoint. Alongside, seawater acidification and warming have been intensifying their impacts on marine ecosystems over the years, compromising species welfare and survival. BDE-209 exposure as well as seawater acidification and warming are known to affect fish behaviour, but information regarding their interactive effects is not available. In this study, long-term effects of BDE-209 contamination, seawater acidification and warming were studied on different behavioural traits of Diplodus sargus juveniles. Our results showed that D. sargus exhibited a marked sensitivity in all the behaviour responses after dietary exposure to BDE-209. Fish exposed to BDE-209 alone revealed lower awareness of a risky situation, increased activity, less time spent within the shoal, and reversed lateralization when compared to fish from the Control treatment. However, when acidification and/or warming were added to the equation, behavioural patterns were overall altered. Fish exposed to acidification alone exhibited increased anxiety, being less active, spending more time within the shoal, while presenting a reversed lateralization. Finally, fish exposed to warming alone were more anxious and spent more time within the shoal compared to those of the Control treatment. These novel findings not only confirm the neurotoxicological attributes of brominated flame retardants (like BDE-209), but also highlight the relevance of accounting for the effects of abiotic variables (e.g. pH and seawater temperature) when investigating the impacts of environmental contaminants on marine life.

Chronic exposure to di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) weakens innate immunity and leads to immunosenescence in C. elegans

Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a widespread contaminant, has numerous adverse impacts on human health and ecosystems. Chronic DEHP exposure has been found to accelerate aging; however, its potential threat to age-dependent innate immune decline remains unknown. This study aims to evaluate the effects of chronic DEHP exposure on innate immunosenescence in Caenorhabditis elegans. We show that the length of the exposure period significantly impacts DEHP-induced age-related declines, which is linked to immunosenescence and oxidative stress. We found that the DEHP-caused immunosenescence is accompanied with downregulation of an antimicrobial gene lys-7 as well as an enhancement of the nuclear translocation of HLH-30, an orthologue of mammalian transcription factor EB (TFEB). Moreover, DEHP exposure increases the expression of riok-1, a human RIO kinase homolog, which is associated with DEHP-induced HLH-30/TFEB translocation. Our findings suggest that early-life and chronic exposure to DEHP, mostly due to parent compound rather than its metabolite mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP), may weaken the innate immunity in C. elegans and may enhance susceptibility to infections or promote immunosenescence in aged populations.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the surface water and sediment along Euphrates River system: Occurrence, sources, ecological and health risk assessment

This study presented for the first time a comprehensive measurement campaign of 16 PAHs along the Euphrates River for five months, in both water and sediment samples. Our study revealed that the PAHs contamination increased along the flow direction due to the increasing non-point pollution and the return flows of agriculture. The 5-6 rings PAHs were dominant in water and sediment samples with an average of 42 % and 50 %, respectively. The diagnostic ratios of PAHs suggest that the pollution of these compounds originated mainly from petroleum product combustions. The carcinogenic PAHs formed 46 % and 55 % of the total measured compounds in water and sediment samples, respectively, which highlights potential ecological and human health risks. Based on sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), most sites exhibit an effect range between low and medium. The calculated incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) for adult and children were in the 10^-2-10^-3 range, which is 3-6-fold higher than what was reported in the literature. These observations call for urgent attention from environmental authorities of countries sharing this key water source in Western Asia.

The occurrence, fate, toxicity, and biodegradation of phthalate esters: An overview

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are a class of emerging xenobiotic compounds that are extensively used as plasticizers. In recent times, there has been an increasing concern over the risk of this pervasive pollution exposure causing endocrine disruption and carcinogenicity in humans and animals. The widespread use of PAEs in home and industrial applications has resulted in their discharge in aquatic bodies via leaching, volatilization, and precipitation. In this overview, the current state of PAE pollution, its potential origins, its fate, as well as its effects on the aquatic environment are discussed. A state-of-the-art review of several studies in the literature that focus on the biological degradation of PAEs is included in this study. The paper aims to provide a comprehensive view of current research on PAEs in the environment, highlighting its fate and alleviated risks on the aquatic biotas, their challenges, future prospects, and the need for good management and policies for its remediation. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Occurrence of phthalate esters was summarized in various environmental matrices along with its serious ecotoxicological implications on biota. Wastewater is the prime source of PAEs contamination. Lack of species-specific effects on biota due to dose, exposure route, and susceptibility. The predominant route to mineralization in PAEs is biodegradation. A critical analysis of worldwide PAE production and consumption identifies the necessity for global PAE production, consumption, and release policies.

Suspect screening of pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, pesticides, and other emerging contaminants in Argentinean Piaractus mesopotamicus, a fish species used for local consumption and export

The widespread distribution of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) is a major concern due to their potential effects on human health and the environment. The insufficient sewage treatment plant infrastructures is a global problem most accentuated in less developed countries and results in the discharge of CECs to water bodies. Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) is a ray-finned freshwater fish species native to the Paraná basin. It is also the most produced aquaculture fish species in Argentina since 2012. Though uninvestigated to date, the occurrence of CECs in pacu may be of high relevance due to production volumes and relevance to human exposure through fish consumption. In this study, we applied a high-resolution mass spectrometry screening method to qualitatively analyze over 100 CECs in pacu. Four extraction/cleanup methods were tested on pooled pacu fillet, including solid-phase extraction and QuEChERS. The method that produced the highest number of detections was selected for further analysis of pacu purchased in supermarkets and fish markets in Argentina between 2017 and 2020. Residues of pesticides, antibiotics, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, plasticizers, sweeteners, drug metabolites, stimulants, and illegal drugs were detected in the samples. A total of 38 CECs were detected, ranging between 24 and 35 CECs per individual sample. 100% of the samples had positive detections of caffeine, 1,7-dimethylxanthine, xanthine, benzoylecgonine, methylparaben, ethylparaben, bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), metolachlor, carbendazim, salicylic acid, 2,4-D, saccharin, cyclamate, and dodecanedioic acid. Mappings generated with correspondence analysis were used to explore similarities/dissimilarities among the detected compounds. To our knowledge this is the first report of saccharin, cyclamate, 2,4 - D, carbendazim, metolachlor, ethylparaben, propylparben, bisphenol A, DEHP, and benzotriazole in fish from Argentina, and the first report on the presence of lisinopril, metropolol acid and dodecanedioic acid in fish worldwide.

Removal of levofloxacin by persulfate activated by nZVI/Co/N-CNT

A composite catalyst nZVI/Co/N-CNT was prepared by loading nano-zero-valent iron-cobalt bimetals on porous materials (N-CNT) by a liquid-phase reduction method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the X-ray electron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization method were used to characterize and analyze the structure of the prepared samples. The effects of different factors on the removal of levofloxacin (LOF) by the nZVI/Co/N-CNT activated persulfate (PMS) system were compared. The results show that the removal rate of LOF can reach 98.14% when the LOF concentration is 20 mg/L, the iron-cobalt molar ratio is 5:1, the dosage of nZVI/Co/N-CNT is 0.3 g·L^-1, and the dosage of PMS is 0.2 g·L^-1 and pH = 7. Free radical quenching experiments showed that SO₄^-· and ·OH coexisted during the reaction, and ·OH was the main active species, and the possible removal mechanism of LOF was speculated.

Mechanism of nonylphenol induced gastric inflammation through NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway

Studies have found that the intake of environmental endocrine disruptors was positively correlated with the occurrence of gastric diseases. The aim of this study was to determine whether nonylphenol (NP) exposure can induce gastric inflammation and whether its mechanism was related to NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway. In vivo, male SD rats were randomly divided into 4 groups (12 rats/group): control group (corn oil), NP low (0.4mg/kg), medium (4mg/kg), and high (40mg/kg) dose groups. After 33 weeks of NP chronic exposure, it was found pathological changes in gastric tissues, increase the release of inflammatory factors, and effects expressions of genes related to the NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway. In vitro, the GES-1 cell experiments, which included four groups: control (0 µmol/L NP), L (2.5 µmol/L NP), M (40 µmol/L NP), and H (60 µmol/L NP), confirmed that NP increased the release of inflammatory factors in the cells, and up-regulated the expression of proteins related to NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway. Furthermore, when pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate ammonium (PDTC) blocked the NF-κB signaling pathway, it was found that the expression of related proteins in the NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway was decreased, and the release of inflammatory factors in GES-1 cells caused by NP was also attenuated. The results of this study indicated that NP can induce inflammation in the stomach in vivo and in vitro, and its mechanism was related to the NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway. These findings provided a new perspective on the mechanism of inflammatory response induced by exposure to environmental endocrine disruptors. Also, these findings indicated that therapeutic strategies for the NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway may be new methods to treat inflammatory diseases.

New insights into humic acid-boosted conversion of bisphenol A by laccase-activated co-polyreaction: Kinetics, products, and phytotoxicity

How humic acid (HA) modifies bisphenol A (BPA) conversion in exoenzyme-activated polyreaction is poorly understood. Herein, the influencing mechanism of HA on laccase-induced BPA self-polymerization was investigated, and the phytotoxicity of the produced BPA self/co-polymers was assessed for the first time. HA prominently boosted BPA elimination, and the rate constants of BPA conversion augmented from 0.61 to 1.43 h^-1 as HA level raised from 0 to 50 mg·L^-1. It is because the generated BPA-HA co-polymers promptly lowered the yields of long-chain BPA self-oligomers, consequently maintaining laccase activity through opening enzymatic substrate-binding pockets. Notably, a few BPA monomers were re-released from the loosely bound self-polymers and co-polymers, and the releasing amounts respectively were 13.9 - 22.4% and 0.3 - 0.5% at pH 2 - 11. Formation of self/co-polymers was greatly conducive to avoiding BPA biotoxicity. Compared with BPA self-polymers, the phytotoxicity of BPA co-polymers to germinated radish (Raphanus sativus L.) seeds was lower due to these covalently bound products were more complex and stable. It follows that laccase-mediated co-polymerization played a significant role in BPA conversion, contaminant detoxification, and carbon sequestration. These findings are not only beneficial to clarifying exoenzyme-activated the generation mechanism of BPA co-polymers in water, but to reusing these supramolecular aggregates in crop growth.

Comprehensive evaluation of the toxicity of the flame retardant (decabromodiphenyl ether) in a bioindicator fish (Gambusia affinis)

In recent years, concerns have increased about the adverse effects on health and the environment of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), especially BDE-209, the most widely PBDE used globally. These pollutants derive from e-waste and present different adverse effects on biota. In this work, a toxicological study on mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) using BDE-209 (2,2',3,3',4,4',5,'5',6,6'-decabromodiphenyl ether) was carried out. Acute toxicity bioassays were conducted with daily renewal of solutions, using different concentrations of environmental relevance, ranged between 10 and 100 μg L^-1 of BDE-209. At 48 and 96 h of exposure, several parameters were evaluated, such as mortality, individual activity (swimming), biochemical activity (catalase; thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances; and acetylcholinesterase), and cytotoxic responses (micronucleus frequencies). In addition, integrated biomarker response and multivariate analyses were conducted to study the correlation of biomarkers. The calculated Lethal Concentration-50 remained constant after all exposure times (24 to 96 h), being the corresponding value 27.79 μg L^-1 BDE-209. Furthermore, BDE-209 induced effects on the swimming activity of this species in relation to acetylcholine, since BDE-209 increased, producing oxidative damage at the biochemical level and genotoxicity after 48 h of exposure to 10 and 25 μg L^-1 BDE-209. The results indicate that BDE-209 has biochemical, cytotoxic, neurotoxic, and genotoxic potential on G. affinis. In addition, mosquitofish could be used as a good laboratory model to evaluate environmental stressors since they could represent a risk factor for Neotropical species.

Emerging Pollutants in Wastewater, Advanced Oxidation Processes as an Alternative Treatment and Perspectives

Emerging pollutants are present in wastewaters treated by conventional processes. Due to water cycle interactions, these contaminants have been reported in groundwater, surface water, and drinking waters. Since conventional processes cannot guarantee their removal or biotransformation, it is necessary to study processes that comply with complete elimination. The current literature review was conducted to describe and provide an overview of the available information about the most significant groups of emerging pollutants that could potentially be found in the wastewater and the environment. In addition, it describes the main entry and distribution pathways of emerging contaminants into the environment through the water and wastewater cycle, as well as some of the potential effects they may cause to flora, fauna, and humans. Relevant information on the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its potential spread through wastewater is included. Furthermore, it also outlines some of the Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) used for the total or partial emerging pollutants removal, emphasizing the reaction mechanisms and process parameters that need to be considered. As well, some biological processes that, although slow, are effective for the biotransformation of some emerging contaminants and can be used in combination with advanced oxidation processes.

Manipulation of cadmium and diethylhexyl phthalate on Rana chensinensis tadpoles affects the intestinal microbiota and fatty acid metabolism

Gastrointestinal tract and intestine microbiota can both have deep effects on the lipid metabolism and immune function of amphibians. Additionally, the composition and structure of the microbial community are influenced by environmental pollutions. It is noteworthy that environmental compounds such as Cd and DEHP are pervasive in the aquatic environment and do not exist in isolation, and single exposure experiments cannot well explain the effects of unpredictable interactions between co-existing compounds on amphibians. In this study, we calculated the parameters of morphological and histological indices of Rana chensinensis tadpoles after treated with Cd and/or DEHP. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing technology was used to assess the relative abundance of intestinal microbial community among tadpoles from each treatment groups. We also examined the mRNA expression levels of lipid digestion and absorption and SCFAs related-genes. Our results indicated that all morphological and histological indices were significantly declined in the Cd treatment group, while the mixed treatment group was similar to the control group. Compared with the control group, the relative abundances of Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Verrucomicrobia exhibited distinctive differences in Cd and/or DEHP treatment groups. Further, RT-qPCR results revealed that the expression levels of lipid metabolism and SCFAs related-genes were also significantly altered among the treatment groups. Taken together, the present study highlighted a new evidence that the alterations in intestinal microbial community and mRNA expression levels of larval amphibians after exposure to Cd and/or DEHP may impair lipid storage and transport, as well as reduce anti-inflammatory capacity, which may ultimately lead to a decline in amphibian populations.

Spatiotemporal distribution and risk assessment of short-chain chlorinated paraffins in 30 major rivers in Taiwan

Because of their highly persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic properties, short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) have become emerging contaminants and have been included in Annex A (elimination) of the Stockholm Convention since 2017. The contamination of SCCPs has been observed in the environment and biota worldwide but has not been detected in Taiwanese river ecosystems. Thus, this study aimed to determine the occurrence of SCCPs in sediments and fish from 30 major rivers in Taiwan and to evaluate the risk of SCCPs to river ecosystems and human health. The concentrations of SCCPs in sediments and fish ranged from ND (not detected) to 12.6 mg/kg dw and ND to 2.07 mg/kg ww, respectively. The concentrations of SCCPs in sediments were significantly correlated with some indicators of the discharge sources and water quality variables, indicating that SCCPs were released via human activities and various discharges into rivers and accumulated in sediments. The bioaccumulation of SCCPs in fish exhibited species-specific profiles and was related to environmental contamination levels and the living pattern and trophic level of the fish. The SCCP levels in sediments from 20 major rivers in Taiwan might pose a potential ecological risk to river ecosystems according to the criteria of the Federal Environmental Quality Guidelines in Canada, the biota-sediment accumulation factor and the risk quotient. Consumption of SCCP-contaminated river fish by different gender and age groups showed no significant health risk to residents in Taiwan evaluated by the estimated daily intake and hazard quotient. However, there was a health concern for the 0- to 3-year-old group due to the consumption of contaminated river fish at a bioaccessibility of 100% for SCCPs by the margin of exposure. Routine monitoring of SCCPs in river ecosystems is needed to protect aquatic organisms and human health.

Covalent organic frameworks-based smart materials for mitigation of pharmaceutical pollutants from aqueous solution

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emergent group of crystalline porous materials that have gained incredible interest in recent years. With foreseeable controllable functionalities and structural configurations, the constructions and catalytic properties of these organic polymeric materials can be controlled to fabricate targeted materials. The specified monomer linkers and pre-designed architecture of COFs facilitate the post-synthetic modifications for introducing novel functions and useful properties. By virtue of inherent porosity, robust framework, well-ordered geometry, functionality, higher stability, and amenability to functionalization, COFs and COFs-based composites are regarded as prospective nanomaterials for environmental clean-up and remediation. This report spotlights the state-of-the-art advances and progress in COFs-based materials to efficiently mitigate pharmaceutical-based environmental pollutants from aqueous solutions. Synthesis approaches, structure, functionalization, and sustainability aspects of COFs are discussed. Moreover, the adsorptive and photocatalytic potential of COFs and their derived nanocomposites for removal and degradation of pharmaceuticals are thoroughly vetted. In addition to deciphering adsorption mechanism/isotherms, the stability, regeneratability and reproducibility are also delineated. Lastly, the outcomes are summed up, and new directions are proposed to widen the promise of COF-based smart materials in diverse fields.

Thermal treatment of decabrominated diphenyl ether in its highly contaminated soil in Taiwan

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were commonly used flame retardants in the world, while some of PBDEs have been listed as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Decabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-209) was the most commercially used PBDEs. A farm near the factory located in Northern Taiwan was highly contaminated with BDE-209. Since PBDEs in the contaminated soils can be uptake by crops shown in our previous studies and could be potentially consumed by humans, it is very important to establish a feasible treatment method for PBDE remediation in this contaminated farm. Thermal treatment of PBDEs in soil was studied. The initial concentration of BDE-209 in contaminated soil was 1.472 mg/kg. A series of thermal experiments under different operating conditions including various temperature (105, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400 and 450 °C), holding time (10, 20 and 30 min), heating rate (5, 10, 20 and 40 °C/min), and soil amount (10, 100, 1000 and 2000 g) were investigated. The optimal heating conditions for thermal treatment of contaminated soil were heating at 450 °C for 30 min with a heating rate of 10 °C/min. Under this condition, the removal of BDE-209 in the different weights of contaminated soil was tested. The soils in the contaminated farm were tested to further evaluate the feasibility of remediating the on-site PBDE contaminated soil through thermal treatment, suggesting that the holding time was extended to 2 h for the field-scale contaminated soil. The results showed that BDE-209 had been removed to below the detection limit in on-site soil. This investigation is the first study using thermal treatment to remediate soils really contaminated with PBDEs.

Modification of cyclodextrin and use in environmental applications

Water pollution, which has become a global problem in parallel with environmental pollution, is a problem that needs to be solved urgently, considering the gradual depletion of water resources. The inadequacy of the water treatment methods and the materials used somehow directed the researchers to look for dual character structures such as biocompatible and biodegradable β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). β-CD, which is normally insoluble in water, is used in demanding wastewater applications by being modified with the help of different agents to be water soluble or transformed into polymeric adsorbents as a result of co-polymerization via cross-linkers. In this way, in addition to the host-guest interactions offered by β-CD, secondary forces arising from these interactions provide advantages in terms of regeneration and reusability. However, the adsorption efficiency and synthesis steps need to be improved. Based on the current studies presented in this review, in which cross-linkers and modification methods are also mentioned, suggestions for novel synthesis methods of new-generation β-CD-based materials, criticisms, and recent methods of removal of micropollutants such as heavy metals, industrial dyes, harmful biomolecules, and pharmaceutics wastes are mentioned.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in 30 river ecosystems, Taiwan: Sources, and ecological and human health risks

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are diverse contaminants of global concern because of their ubiquity, toxicity, and carcinogenicity to many organisms, including humans. This study determines the distribution and sources of PAHs in sediments and fish from 30 major rivers in Taiwan, and the risks these PAHs pose to river ecosystems and human health. The total concentrations of 26 PAHs in sediments and fish were 0.016-7.44 mg/kg dw and 0.096-5.51 mg/kg ww, respectively. The PAH composition in sediments differed from that in fish, indicating that sediments may not be the major contributor of PAHs to fish. The accumulation of different PAH compounds in fish was species-specific, depending on the lipid content, living pattern, and trophic level of each fish species, and on the level of environmental contamination. The diagnostic ratios revealed that PAHs in the sediment primarily originated from pyrogenic sources, with some contribution from petrogenic sources. The contribution of each source varied with the sampling site and season. Several water and air quality variables were found to significantly correlate with PAH concentration in sediments and fish, suggesting that PAHs were mainly derived from wastewater discharge and combustion emissions. The 95th percentile risk quotient values suggested that PAHs in sediment from six rivers pose high ecotoxicological risks. The toxic equivalents of benzo[a]pyrene for 16 PAHs in fish were 12-108 μg/kg dw. A human risk assessment using the 95th percentile values of hazard quotient, hazard index, and margin of exposure revealed that the consumption of contaminated fish muscle poses no remarkable risk to human health. However, the 95th percentile carcinogenic risk values indicated that benzo[a]pyrene concentrations in some fish muscles may pose a carcinogenic risk. Benzo[a]pyrene risk management measures are, therefore, necessary.

Genotoxic activity of endocrine disrupting compounds commonly present in paper mill effluents

In the present study we evaluated cytotoxic and genotoxic activities of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), including dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), bisphenol A (BPA), and nonylphenol (NP), which have been previously identified in effluents from two paper mills with different paper production technologies (virgin or recycled fibres). Moreover, we evaluated genotoxic activity of the effluents from these two paper mills and compared it to the activity of artificial complex mixtures consisting of the seven EDCs at concentrations detected in corresponding paper mill effluents. None of the EDCs was genotoxic in Salmonella typhimurium (SOS/umuC assay), while all induced DNA damage in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells (comet assay). After 4 h of exposure genotoxic effects were determined at concentrations ≥ 1 μg/L for BBP and DEHP, ≥10 μg/L for DMP, DEP, DBP, and BPA, and ≥100 μg/L for NP, while after 24 h of exposure DNA damage occurred at ≥10 μg/L for DBP, BPA and NP, and ≥100 μg/L for DMP, DEP, BBP and DEHP. The effluents and corresponding artificial mixtures of EDCs from paper mill that uses virgin fibres did not induce DNA damage in HepG2 cells, while the effluents and corresponding artificial mixtures for the paper mill that uses recycled fibres were genotoxic. Genotoxic activity of effluents was significantly higher compared to corresponding artificial mixtures suggesting the presence of further unknown compounds contributing to the effect. Wastewater monitoring based on chemical analysis is limited to determination of targeted compounds and does not take into account possible interactions between chemicals in mixtures. Therefore, it alone cannot provide an adequate information on potential toxic effects required for the assessment of genotoxic activity of real environmental samples and their potential threats to the environment and human health.

Potential environmental risk assessment of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate emissions from a municipal solid waste landfill leachate

Background

In certain countries, including Poland, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) waste, together with di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) contained within (up to 60%), is mostly directed to municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills. From there, over time, it is released from the polymer matrix and can migrate with landfill leachate into the environment. The amount of DEHP placed on the Polish market since the start of industrial production and the prevalent landfilling disposal of PVC waste in Poland, indicate that DEHP pollution can increase risk factors in the future. The objective of this study was to determine the concentrations of DEHP in leachates from a chosen MSW landfill directed to a local sewage treatment plant (STP) and estimate the associated potential risks to the environment.

Results

DEHP concentrations in leachates ranged from < LOQ to 394.4 µg/L, depending on the sampling year and season. DEHP is a pervasive environmental contaminant present in all investigated landfill leachate samples. The results from The European Union System for the Evaluation of Substances (EUSES) modelling related to DEHP in leachate directed to STP indicated potentially unacceptable risk to freshwater organisms; and birds and mammals feeding on earthworms (where a sewage sludge applications in agriculture take place). The results indicated low risk for other environmental components including local fresh-water sediment, local soil and microorganisms of STP, and freshwater fish-eating birds and mammals.

Conclusions

Future DEHP emissions may occur after the technical lifetime of the landfill and/or decay its bottom sealing. To avoid contamination, the monitoring of landfills after closure should include DEHP concentrations and last longer than the recommended (inter alia in Poland) 30 years, or until emissions from PVC to leachate are eliminated. More research on leachate of DEHP and its potential risks should be conducted, utilising detailed modelling which can including other landfills and different routes of DEHP emissions in leachates.

Levels of Phthalates, Bisphenol-A, Nonylphenol, and Microplastics in Fish in the Estuaries of Northern Taiwan and the Impact on Human Health

Due to the sparsity in knowledge, we investigated the presence of various estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EEDCs), including phthalates (PAEs), bisphenol-A (BPA), and nonylphenol (NP), as well as microplastics (MPs) in samples of the most widely consumed fish collected from different estuaries in northern Taiwan. We then proceeded to determine the likely contribution that this exposure has on the potential for health impacts in humans following consumption of the fish. Six hundred fish caught from five river estuaries (producing 130 pooled samples) were analyzed to determine how different factors (such as the river, benthic, pelagic, and migratory species) influence EEDCs’ contamination and the possible impacts on human health following typical consumption patterns. The predominant EEDCs was diethyl phthalates (DEP), bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalates (DEHP), and di-iso-nonylphthalate (DINP) in fish, present at 52.9 ± 77.3, 45.3 ± 79.8, and 42.5 ± 79.3 ng/g dry weight (d.w.), respectively. Residual levels of NP, BPA, and MPs in the fish were 17.4 ± 29.1 and 1.50 ± 2.20 ng/g d.w. and 0.185 ± 0.338 mg/g d.w., respectively. EEDCs and MPs levels varied widely among the five river estuaries sampled due, in part, to differences in habitat types and the associated diversity of fish species sampled. For DEP, the Lao-Jie River and pelagic environments produced the most severely contaminated fish species, respectively. DEP residues were also associated with the burden of MPs in the fish. Based on our analysis, we predict no substantial direct human health risk by EEDCs based on typical consumption rates of estuarine fish by the Taiwanese people. However, other sources of EEDC exposure cannot be ignored.

Probing the contamination characteristics, mobility, and risk assessments of typical plastic additive-phthalate esters from a typical coastal aquaculture area, China

Contamination characteristics, equilibrium partitioning and risk assessment of phthalate esters (PAEs) were investigated in seawater, sediment and biological samples collected from the Xiangshan Bay area during an annual investigation between January and November 2019. PAE concentrations detected in the mariculture environment in surface seawater, sediment, and biological samples were 172-3365 ng/L, 190-2430 μg/kg (dry weight [dw]), and 820-4926 μg/kg (dw), respectively. The dominant congeners in different media included di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). The inner bay and the bay mouth were the gathering area of PAEs and heavily influenced by the mariculture activities, river inputs, and anthropogenic activities. The bioaccumulation of PAEs demonstrated benthic feeding fishes with relatively high trophic levels concentrated high levels of phthalates. The mobility of PAEs in sediment-seawater showed that the transfer tendency of low-molecular weight species was from the sediment to the water, which was in contrast with those of high-molecular weight PAEs. DEHP, DiBP and DnBP had various degrees of ecological risks in the aquatic environment, whereas only the DiBP posed potential risks in sediments. The current assessment of carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks posed by fish consumption were within acceptable limits for humans.

Quantification, distribution, and effects of di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate contamination: Risk analysis and mitigation strategies in urban environment

Phthalate acid ester, di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is ubiquitously detected contaminant of emerging concerns (CECs) in all the environmental samples. The present study attempted to understand the fate and transport of DEHP in urban areas by evaluating the quantities, distribution, risk, and effects in the Mysuru city, India. The study is anticipated to serve as a vital document for local and national regulators to frame a robust DEHP management plan and mitigate the risks associated. Liquid-liquid microextraction followed by gas chromatographic analysis was adopted to determine the concentrations of DEHP. The risk quotient method was adopted to assess potential risk, and a conceptual planning model framework was designed to mitigate the DEHP contamination. The municipal wastewater contained 115 ± 9.2 μg/L, whereas treated municipal wastewater showed 95 ± 7.6 μg/L DEHP that was attributed to the inefficiency of the treatment plant. Further, sediments in surface water, as well as groundwater samples of the study area, showed 8 ± 0.64 to 12 ± 0.96 μg/L and 32 ± 2.56 to 40 ± 3.2 μg/kg of DEHP, respectively. The risk quotient of 19.17 for samples in around treatment indicated highest risk, whereas groundwater samples had a risk quotient of 1-2 indicating relative risk to aquatic organisms. In addition, the study highlighted the source, possible entry pathways, and management strategies including treatment aspects to draw an understanding of the distribution and potential ecological imbalances with contamination of DEHP in the urban sector. Primary investigation and assessment to possible health and environmental risks of DEHP contamination in urban wastewater. Revealed the associated health risks and proposed possible management strategies.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) using as model for genotoxicity and DNA repair assessments: Historical review, current status and trends

Genotoxic pollutants lead to both DNA damage and changes in cell repair mechanisms. Selecting suitable biomonitors is a fundamental step in genotoxicity studies. Thus, zebrafish have become a popular model used to assess the genotoxicity of different pollutants in recent years. They have orthologous genes with humans and hold almost all genes involved in different repair pathways. Therefore, the aim of the current study is to summarize the existing literature on zebrafish using as model system to assess the genotoxicity of different pollutants. Revised data have shown that comet assay is the main technique adopted in these studies. However, it is necessary standardizing the technique applied to zebrafish in order to enable better result interpretation and comparisons. Overall, pollutants lead to single-strand breaks (SSB), double-strand breaks (DSB), adduct formation, as well as to changes in the expression of genes involved in repair mechanisms. Although analyzing repair mechanisms is essential to better understand the genotoxic effects caused by pollutants, few studies have analyzed repair capacity. The current review reinforces the need of conducting further studies on the role played by repair pathways in zebrafish subjected to DNA damage. Revised data have shown that zebrafish are a suitable model to assess pollutant-induced genotoxicity.

ABC proteins activity and cytotoxicity in zebrafish hepatocytes exposed to triclosan

Chemicals such as triclosan are a concern because of their presence on daily products (soap, deodorant, hand sanitizers …), consequently this compound has an ubiquitous presence in the environment. Little is known about the effect of this bactericide on aquatic life. The aim of this study is to analyze triclosan exposure (24 h) to an in vitro model, zebrafish hepatocytes cell line (ZF-L), if it can be cytotoxic (mitochondrial activity, membrane stability and apoptosis) and if can activate ATP-binding cassette (ABC) proteins (activity, expression and protein/compound affinity). Triclosan was cytotoxic to hepatocytes when exposed to concentrations (1-4 mg/L). The results showed impaired mitochondria function, as well, plasma membrane rupture and an increase of apoptotic cells. We observed an ABC proteins activity inhibition in cells exposed to 0.5 and 1 mg/L. When ABCBs and ABCC2 proteins expression were analyzed, there was an increase of protein expression in both ABC proteins families on cells exposed to 1 mg/L of triclosan. On molecular docking results, triclosan and the fluorescent used as substrate (rhodamine) presented high affinity with all ABC proteins family tested, showing a greater affinity with ABCC2. In conclusion, this study showed that triclosan can be cytotoxic to ZF-L. Molecular docking indicated high affinity between triclosan and the tested pumps.

Adsorptive removal of pharmaceuticals from water using metal-organic frameworks: A review

Pharmaceutical pollution has emerged as a highly concerned issue due to its adverse effects. Elevated concentrations of pharmaceuticals in water should be regulated to satisfy the requirement for the provision of clean water. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high specific surface area, controllable porous structure, and facile modification can serve as promising adsorbents for the removal of pharmaceutical contaminants from water. In this review, a selected collection illustrating the reliable strategies and concepts to prepare the MOFs-based materials with superior water stability is described. In addition, recent progress on the adsorptive removal of pharmaceutical pollutant using burgeoning and functional MOFs is also summarized in terms of maximum capacity, equilibrium time, and regenerate ability. Meanwhile, to understand the adsorption mechanism, related interactions including coordination with unsaturated site, pore-filling effect, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, and π-π stacking are further discussed. Finally, critical perspectives/assessment of future research emphasising on fabricating desirable MOFs and establishing structure-property relationships to facilitate capture performance are identified.

Detecting phthalate esters in sludge particulates from wastewater treatment plants

This study proposed a method for analysis of 10 phthalate esters compounds from wastewater treatment plant sludges. The analytical efficiency of GC-MS for of target compounds was verified by a standard mixture of phthalate esters. The response factors related to the respective internal standards from a five-point calibration curve quantified the phthalate esters in individual compounds. Based on the literature compiled by environmental agencies, new generation phthalate compounds have been developed, such as di-iso-nonyl phthalate (DiNP), di-iso-decyl phthalate (DiDP), as alternative to conventional phthalates. The analytical results showed that the total PAEs concentration was in the range from 7.4 to 138.6 mg kg^-1 dw in these seven analyzed sludge samples. More, di-iso-nonyl phthalate (DiNP), di-iso-decyl phthalate (DiDP) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) contributed to over 99% of PAEs in the sludge. The correlation between total PAEs concentration in household and sewage flow treated at seven WWTPs and concentrations of DEHP, DiNP and DiDP was significant.
