Effects of nitrogen addition on soil methane uptake in global forest biomes

The forest soil methane (CH4) flux exhibits high spatiotemporal variability. Understanding these variations and their driving factors is crucial for accurately assessing the forest CH4 budget. In this study, we monitored the diurnal and seasonal variations in soil CH4 fluxes in two poplar (Populus spp.) plantations (Sihong and Dongtai) with different soil textures using the static chamber-based method. The results showed that the annual average soil CH4 flux in the Sihong and Dongtai poplar plantations was 4.27 ± 1.37 kg CH4-C ha-1 yr-1 and 1.92 ± 1.07 kg CH4-C ha-1 yr-1, respectively. Both plantations exhibited net CH4 emissions during the growing season, with only weak CH4 absorption (-0.01 to -0.007 mg m-2 h-1) during the non-growing season. Notably, there was a significant difference in soil CH4 flux between the clay loam of the Sihong poplar plantation and the sandy loam of the Dongtai poplar plantation. From August to December 2019 and from July to August and November 2020, the soil CH4 flux in the Sihong poplar plantation was significantly higher than in the Dongtai poplar plantation. Moreover, the soil CH4 flux significantly increased with rising soil temperature and soil water content. Diurnally, the soil CH4 flux followed a unimodal variation pattern at different growing stages of poplars, with peaks occurring at noon and in the afternoon. However, the soil CH4 flux did not exhibit a consistent seasonal pattern across different years, likely due to substantial variations in precipitation and soil water content. Overall, our study emphasizes the need for a comprehensive understanding of the spatiotemporal variations in forest soil CH4 flux with different soil textures. This understanding is vital for developing reasonable forest management strategies and reducing uncertainties in the global CH4 budget.

Multi-ecosystem services differently affected by over-canopy and understory nitrogen additions in a typical subtropical forest

Obtaining a holistic understanding of the impacts of atmospheric nitrogen deposition on multiple ecosystem services of forest is essential for developing comprehensive and sustainable strategies, particularly in heavy N deposition regions such as subtropical China. However, such impacts remain incompletely understood, with most previous studies focus on individual ecosystem function or service via understory N addition experiments. To address this knowledge gap, we quantified the effects of over-canopy and understory N additions on multiple ecosystem services based on a 7-year large-scale field experiment in a typical subtropical forest. Our results showed continued over-canopy N addition with 50 kg ha-1  year-1 over a period of 4-7 years significantly increased plant nutrient retention, but did not affect the services of soil nutrient accumulation, water yield, C sequestration (in plants and soil), or oxygen release. There were trade-offs between the soil and plant on providing the services of nutrient accumulation/retention and C sequestration under over-canopy N addition. However, without uptake and retention of tree canopy, the trade-off between soil and plant were more weaken under the understory N addition with 50 kg ha-1  year-1 , and their relationships were even synergetic under the understory N addition with 25 kg ha-1  year-1 . The results suggest that understory N addition cannot accurately simulate the effects of atmospheric N deposition on multiple services, along with mutual relationships. Interestingly, the services of plant N, P retention, and C sequestration exhibited a synergetic increase under the over-canopy N addition but a decrease under the understory N addition. Our results also found tree layer plays a primary role in providing plant nutrient retention service and is sensitive to atmospheric N deposition. Further studies are needed to investigate the generalized effects of forest canopy processes on alleviating the threaten of global change factors in different forest ecosystems.

Effects of nitrogen addition on the combined global warming potential of three major soil greenhouse gases: A global meta-analysis

Increased nitrogen (N) deposition has a great impact on soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and numerous studies have revealed the individual effects of N addition on three major GHGs (CO2, CH4, and N2O). Nevertheless, quantitative evaluation of the effects of N addition on the global warming potential (GWP) of GHGs based on simultaneous measurements is needed not only to better understand the comprehensive effect of N deposition on GHGs but also for precise estimation of ecosystem GHG fluxes in response to N deposition. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis using a dataset with 124 simultaneous measurements of the three major GHGs from 54 studies to assess the effects of N addition on the combined global warming potential (CGWP) of these soil GHGs. The results showed that the relative sensitivity of the CGWP to N addition was 0.43%/kg N ha-1 yr-1, indicating an increase in the CGWP. Among the ecosystems studied, wetlands are considerable GHG sources with the highest relative sensitivity to N addition. Overall, CO2 contributed the most to the N addition-induced CGWP change (72.61%), followed by N2O (27.02%) and CH4 (0.37%), but the contributions of the three GHGs varied across ecosystems. Moreover, the effect size of the CGWP had a positive relationship with N addition rate and mean annual temperature and a negative relationship with mean annual precipitation. Our findings suggest that N deposition may influence global warming from the perspective of the CGWP of CO2, CH4, and N2O. Our results also provide reference values that may reduce uncertainties in future projections of the effects of N deposition on GHGs.

Exogenous plant growth regulator and foliar fertilizers for phytoextraction of cadmium with Boehmeria nivea [L.] Gaudich from contaminated field soil

As a enrichment plant, ramie can be used for the phytoremediation of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil. However, it is worth exploring the role of plant growth regulators and foliar fertilizers in the process of plant growth and development and Cd adsorption. By measuring the agronomic traits, Cd content of aboveground and underground ramie, calculating the Cd transfer coefficient (TF) and Cd bioconcentration factors (BCF), and the correlation between various indicators. This study examined the effects of plant growth regulators and foliar fertilizers on ramie's capacity for Cd accumulation and transportation. Plant growth regulators and foliar fertilizers increased the Cd content of the aboveground ramie, reduced the Cd content of the underground ramie, and increased the TF. Among them, GA-1 increased the Cd content of the aboveground ramie to 3 times more than that of the control and reduced the Cd content of the underground ramie by 54.76%. Salicylic acid (SA) increased the Cd content of the aboveground ramie to three times more than that of the control. The combination of GA and foliar fertilizer reduced the Cd content of the aboveground and underground ramie and the TF and BCF of the underground ramie. After the hormones were sprayed, the TF of ramie had a significant positive correlation with the Cd content of the aboveground ramie; the BCF of the aboveground ramie had a significant positive correlation with the Cd content and TF of the aboveground ramie. The results indicate that Brassinolide (BR), gibberellin (GA), ethephon (ETH), polyamines (PAs), and salicylic acid (SA) have different effects on the enrichment and transport of Cd in ramie. This study provided an effective method to improve the capacity for ramie to adsorb heavy metals during cultivation.

Responses of Soil N2O Emission and CH4 Uptake to N Input in Chinese Forests across Climatic Zones: A Meta-Study

Enhanced nitrogen (N) deposition has shown significant impacts on forest greenhouse gas emissions. Previous studies have suggested that Chinese forests may exhibit stronger N2O sources and dampened CH4 sinks under aggravated N saturation. To gain a common understanding of the N effects on forest N2O and CH4 fluxes, many have conducted global-scale meta-analyses. However, such effects have not been quantified particularly for China. Here, we present a meta-study of the N input effects on soil N2O emission and CH4 uptake in Chinese forests across climatic zones. The results suggest that enhanced N inputs significantly increase soil N2O emission (+115.8%) and decrease CH4 uptake (−13.4%). The mean effects were stronger for N2O emission and weaker for CH4 uptake in China compared with other global sites, despite being statistically insignificant. Subtropical forest soils have the highest emission factor (2.5%) and may respond rapidly to N inputs; in relatively N-limited temperate forests, N2O and CH4 fluxes are less sensitive to N inputs. Factors including forest type, N form and rate, as well as soil pH, may also govern the responses of N2O and CH4 fluxes. Our findings pinpoint the important role of Southern Chinese forests in the regional N2O and CH4 budgets.

Nitrogen Addition Effects on Wetland Soils Depend on Environmental Factors and Nitrogen Addition Methods: A Meta-Analysis

Identifying the effects of nitrogen (N) addition under key environmental factors and N addition methods can aid in understanding the paradigm of N addition in wetland ecosystems. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis of 30 field studies of wetland ecosystems and selected 14 indicators. We found that the changes in soil TN and SOC contributed significantly to the changes in microbial community structure under N additions. The environmental factors and N addition methods altered the direction or size of N addition effects on wetland soil properties, microbial diversity and key C and N cycling genes. N-limited conditions and climate conditions determined the N addition effect direction on SOC, and saline-alkali conditions determined the N addition effect direction on microbial diversity and AOB abundance. Environmental heterogeneity and N addition methods determine the response of wetland soil to nitrogen application. Therefore, it is crucial to study the effects of environmental factors and N addition methods on the N deposition of wetland soils.

The gap between atmospheric nitrogen deposition experiments and reality

Anthropogenic activities have dramatically altered the global nitrogen (N) cycle. Atmospheric N deposition, primarily from combustion of biomass and fossil fuels, has caused acidification of precipitation and freshwater, and triggered intense research into ecosystem responses to this pollutant. Experimental simulations of N deposition have been the main scientific tool to understand ecosystem responses, revealing dramatic impacts on soil microbes, plants, and higher trophic levels. However, comparison of the experimental treatments applied in the vast majority of studies with observational and modelled N deposition reveals a wide gulf between research and reality. While the majority of experimental treatments exceed 100 kg N ha^-1 y^-1, global median land surface deposition rates are around 1 kg N ha^-1 y^-1 and only exceed 10 kg N ha^-1 y^-1 in certain regions, primarily in industrialized areas of Europe and Asia and particularly in forests. Experimental N deposition treatments are in fact similar to mineral fertilizer application rates in agriculture. Some ecological guilds, such as saprotrophic fungi, are highly sensitive to N and respond differently to low and high N availability. In addition, very high levels of N application cause changes in soil chemistry, such as acidification, meaning that unrealistic experimental treatments are unlikely to reveal true ecosystem responses to N. Hence, despite decades of research, past experiments can tell us little about how the biosphere has responded to anthropogenic N deposition. A new approach is required to improve our understanding of this important phenomenon. First, characterization of N response functions using observed N deposition gradients. Second, application of experimental N addition gradients at realistic levels over long periods to detect cumulative effects. Third, application of non-linear meta-regressions to detect non-linear responses in meta-analyses of experimental studies.

Dynamics of methane and other greenhouse gases flux in forest ecosystems in China

The article examines an important problem of studying greenhouse gas emissions in forest ecosystems. The CH₄ emission and absorption dynamics in the soil have been studied based on the physical-chemical and microbiological analysis of forest products. The changes in forest methanogenesis in relation concerning the value of the hydrothermal coefficient have been examined. It was established that the most intensive emission of greenhouse gases was observed within the value of the hydrothermal coefficient (HTC) of 1.8 … 2. For soils with the HTC value of <1.3, almost no increase in greenhouse gases level was observed. It was found that fluctuations of methane levels in soil were seasonal. Statistical analysis of the obtained results showed sufficient convergence of the results. Thus, the determination coefficient of the obtained results was R² > 0.7, the Pearson criterion - χ² ∼ 1, and the Student's t-criterion >0.8. The results showed that methane is almost completely absorbed by forest soils, while CO₂ and N₂O are released into the atmosphere. Laboratory studies of soil's adsorption capacity relative to hydrocarbon under dynamic conditions have been performed and it has been established that soils with a high composition of organic matter showed significantly higher absorption capacity in comparison with sandy and clayey soils.
