Contamination and human health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface soils from Tianjin coastal new region, China

Lagging pollution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the rebuilt e-waste site: From the perspective of characteristics, sources, and risk assessment

Little information is known regarding how the lagged pollution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) influenced the environment and human health after an e-waste dismantling site was rebuilt. This study investigated the characteristics, sources, and risk assessment of PAHs in a rebuilt e-waste site and its surrounding farmland by analyzing the samples of soil, dust, water, and vegetable. Concentrations of PAHs in soil, vegetable and water in the rebuilt site were relatively higher than in its surrounding farmland. The concentrations in surface soils, soil columns, dust, vegetables, and water varied from 55.4 to 3990 ng g-1, 1.65 to 5060 ng g-1, 2190 to 2420 ng g-1, 2670 to 10,300 ng g-1, and 46.8 to 110 μg L-1 in the e-waste site, respectively. On the farmland, PAH concentrations in surface soils, vegetables, and water ranged from 41.5 to 2760 ng g-1, 506 to 7640 ng g-1, and 56.6 to 89.2 μg L-1, respectively. A higher proportion of high-molecular-weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs) appeared in all multimedia compared with low-molecular-weight PAHs (LMW-PAHs). Diagnostic ratio together with positive matrix factorization (PMF) revealed that vehicle emission was the primary source in this area, and the activity of e-waste disposal was another important source in the rebuilt e-waste site. Based on the deterministic health risks, people working in the reconstructed e-waste site were exposed to low risks, whereas the residents living near the surrounding farmland were exposed to low risk. Sensitivity analyses indicated that exposure frequency and PAH concentrations were the main factors that influenced exposure risk. This study provides valuable insight into the comprehension of the lagging pollution effects of PAH on the environment and human health after the e-waste site was rebuilt.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their halogenated derivatives in soil from Yellow River Delta: Distribution, source apportionment, and risk assessment

The distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and halogenated PAHs (HPAHs) in surface soils from the petroleum industrial area of the Yellow River Delta (YRD) in China were investigated. The total concentrations of 16 PAHs ranged from 19.6 to 1560 ng/g, while 22 HPAHs ranged from 2.44 to 14.9 ng/g. Moreover, a high degree of spatial distribution heterogeneity was observed for both PAHs and HPAHs, which is likely attributed to the distinct industrial activities in studied area. The combustion of biomass and petroleum were identified as primary sources of soil PAHs and HPAHs in the YRD. Furthermore, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, and benzo[g,h,i]perylene exhibited high ecological risks (with risk quotients of 1.47, 1.44, and 1.02, respectively) in specific sites within the YRD. Considering the high toxicity of HPAHs and their potential joint environmental effects with PAHs, continuous attention should be directed towards the environmental risks associated with both PAHs and HPAHs.

Spatiotemporal variations in soil pollution by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons over a 20-year economic boom in different districts of a heavy industrial city in North China

Urbanization-related human activities, such as population aggregation, rapid industrial expansion, and intensified traffic, are key factors that impact local polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emissions and their associated health risks. Consequently, regions with varying degrees of urbanization within a megacity may exhibit diverse spatiotemporal patterns in the presence and distribution of soil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, resulting in different levels of ecological risks for local inhabitants following the same period of development. In this study, we measured the concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil samples collected from industrial district and rural district in Tianjin (China) in 2018, and compared with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon data in 2001 from a previous study to characterize these regional variations in occurrence, source, and human risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons induced by urbanization with time and space. The results indicate the 20-year rapid urbanization and industrialization has differentially affected the composition, distribution and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils from different economic functional zones in Tianjin. Additionally, its impact on health risks in rural district appeared to be more significant than that in industrial district.

Ecological risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the sediment of a protected karst plateau lake (Caohai) wetland in China

Understanding PAH and OCP distributions and sources in lakes is necessary for developing pollutant control policies. Here, we assessed the occurrence, risk, and sources of PAHs and OCPs in the sediment of Caohai Lake. The PAHs were predominantly high-molecular-weight compounds (mean 57.5 %), and the diagnostic ratios revealed that coal, biomass burning, and traffic were the sources of PAHs. HCHs (6.53 ± 7.22 ng g-1) and DDTs (10.86 ± 12.16 ng g-1) were the dominant OCPs and were primarily sourced from fresh exogenous inputs. RDA showed that sediment properties explained 74.12 % and 65.44 % of the variation in PAH and OCP concentrations, respectively. Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) assessment indicated that hazardous PAHs in Caohai Lake sediment posed moderate risks to children and adults (ILCR>1.0 × 10-4), while the risk from OCPs was low; however, the recent influx of HCHs and DDTs requires additional attention.

Characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) removal by nanofiltration with and without coexisting organics

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are contaminants of great concern owing to their persistence, toxicity, and bioaccumulation in aquatic environments. In this study, nanofiltration (NF) was used to investigate the removal of naphthalene (NAP) and phenanthrene (PHE) using three membranes of NF270, NF90, and DK. Subsequently, we examined the effects of coexisting organics on PAHs removal. Based on the results, DK was determined to be the optimal membrane for removing PAHs by comparing the membrane flux and pollutant rejection. The membrane flux reached 34.32 L/m2·h, and the NAP and PHE rejections were 92.21% and 97.85%, respectively, at transmembrane pressure (TMP) of 5 bar using DK. Coexisting organics decreased the membrane fluxes of NF270 and DK in the following order: protein > glucose > humic acid. The NAP and PHE rejections were obviously improved using NF270 in the following order: humic acid > protein > glucose. The PHE rejection was slightly improved using DK. A low concentration of organics could reduce the NAP rejection using DK; however, the NAP rejection could be restored at high concentrations of organics, except for humic acid. Coexisting organics could cause severe membrane fouling. The order of the effect of different coexisting organics on membrane fouling was protein > humic acid > glucose. The total investment and operating costs were about 1.47 and 0.187 million dollars, respectively, for treating PAHs solution using DK when the feed flow was 300 m3/d.

Distribution and source identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with PCA-MLR and PMF methods in the topsoil of Chengdu at SW, China

In spite of extensive studies on the features of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as typical persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in cities, lack of understanding on the distribution and source characteristics of PAHs in big city with basin climate that can easily accelerate the pollution. Therefore, we sampled and analyzed PAHs from forty-five topsoil samples evenly distributed in Chengdu and the data shows that: (1) concentrations of ∑16PAHs in the study area ranged from 88.56 to 4448.34 ng/g, with a mean value of 739.07 ng/g, which is a lower level compared to similar cities, the distribution and proportion of LMW-PAHs show that the migration of pollution is blocked by the topography of the basin; (2) principal component analysis-multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) indicated that combustion of fossil fuels and biomass is the most important source of PAHs in Chengdu; (3) the toxic equivalency factors of benzo[a]pyrene indicated a low risk of ∑16PAHs in all areas in Chengdu; (4) the inherited lifetime carcinogenic risk (ILCR) showed a relatively low level of potential risk in the region, while female inhabitants in several regions seem to suffer from higher health risks. Overall, our case study of PAHs in the topsoil at Chengdu city at SW China indicates that the PCA-MLR analysis is useful to identify the source of PAHs in the urban region with complicated pollution source.

Laccase as a useful assistant for maize to accelerate the phenanthrene degradation in soil

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution has attracted much attention due to their wide distribution in soil environment and serious harm to human health. In order to establish an efficient and eco-friendly technology for remediation of PAH-contaminated soil, phytoremediation utilizing maize assisted with enzyme remediation was explored in this study. The results showed that the participation of laccase could promote the degradation of phenanthrene (PHE) from soil and significantly reduce the accumulation of PHE in maize. The degradation efficiency of PHE in soil could reach 77.19% under laccase-assisted maize remediation treatment, while the accumulation of PHE in maize roots and leaves decreased by 41.23% and 74.63%, respectively, compared to that without laccase treatment, after 24 days of maize cultivation. Moreover, it was found that laccase addition shifted the soil microbial community structure and promoted the relative abundance of some PAH degrading bacteria, such as Pseudomonas and Sphingomonas. In addition, the activities of some enzymes that were involved in PAH degradation process and soil nutrient cycle increased with the treatment of laccase enzyme. Above all, the addition of laccase could not only improve the removal efficiency of PHE in soil, but also alter the soil environment and reduce the accumulation of PHE in maize. This study provided new perspective for exploring the efficiency of the laccase-assisted maize in the remediation of contaminated soil, evaluating the way for reducing the risk of secondary pollution of plants in the phytoremediation process.

Trends and patterns of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in forest fire-affected soils and water mediums with implications on human health risk assessment

Forest fires are extreme natural/artificial events releasing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are carcinogenic. Most of the released PAHs are trapped in burnt ash, a part of which is transported and settle on different mediums like soil and water. After strong rainfall events, PAHs enter into surface water bodies through surface runoff, thereby deteriorating water quality. Changes in PAHs levels during the post-fire duration and human health risks due to PAHs released from forest fires need attention. This study aim to explain the trends and patterns of PAHs and health risks due to exposure to soil and water contaminated with PAHs. Forest fires release a higher percentage of low molecular weight PAHs (LMW PAHs) than high molecular weight PAHs (HMW PAHs). Ash and burnt soils contain a higher percentage of LMW PAHs since biomass burning releases huge amounts of LMW PAHs. Whereas, sediments contain a higher percentage of HMW PAHs since most of the LMW PAHs are already degraded. HMW PAHs were causing higher risk to humans (both cancer and non-cancer) due to their higher oxidation potential. Exposure to water contaminated by PAHs resulted in higher health risks for both BaP equivalent and a mixture of PAHs. Exposure to sediment produced the highest health risk due to a higher percentage of HMW PAHs, followed by surface water, burnt soil, ash, and unburnt soil. Cancer and non-cancer risk due to dermal exposure was more elevated than oral exposure. The mixture of PAHs in sediment produced a higher average dermal risk for children (2.21E+00 for cancer and 7.69E+03 for non-cancer risk) and oral cancer risk for adults (7.11E-03). However, exposure to BaP equivalent in sediment produced higher oral non-cancer risk (7.01E+02) for children. Thus, effective PAHs monitoring is required in both soil and surface water mediums for ensuring proper treatment in water supply systems.

Introducing a land use-based weight factor in regional health risk assessment of PAHs in soils of an urban agglomeration

The high heterogeneity of land uses in urban areas has led to large spatial variations in the contents and health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils. A land use-based health risk assessment (LUHR) model was proposed for soil pollution on a regional scale by introducing a land use-based weight factor, which considered the differences in exposure levels of soil pollutants to receptor populations between land uses. The model was applied to assess the health risk posed by soil PAHs in the rapidly industrializing urban agglomeration of Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Urban Agglomeration (CZTUA). The mean concentration of total PAHs (∑PAHs) in CZTUA was 493.2 μg/kg, and their spatial distribution was consistent with emissions from industry and vehicles. The LUHR model suggested the 90th percentile health risk value was 4.63 × 10-7, which was 4.13 and 1.08 times higher than those of traditional risk assessments that have adopted adults and children as default risk receptors, respectively. The risk maps of LUHRs showed that the ratios of the area exceeding the risk threshold (1 × 10-6) to the total area were 34.0 %, 5.0 %, 3.8 %, 2.1 %, and 0.2 % in the industrial area, urban green space, roadside, farmland, and forestland, respectively. The LUHR model back-calculated the soil critical values (SCVs) for ∑PAHs under different land uses, resulting in values of 6719, 4566, 3224, and 2750 μg/kg for forestland, farmland, urban green space, and roadside, respectively. Compared with the traditional health risk assessment models, this LUHR model identified high-risk areas and drew risk contours more accurately and precisely by considering both the spatial variances of soil pollution and their exposure levels to different risk receptors. This provides an advanced approach to assessing the health risks of soil pollution on a regional scale.

Estimation of indoor soil/dust-skin adherence factors and health risks for adults and children in two typical cities in southern China

Soil/dust (SD) skin adherence is key dermal exposure parameter used for calculating the health risk of dermal exposure to contaminants. However, few studies of this parameter have been conducted in Chinese populations. In this study, forearm SD samples were randomly collected using the wipe method from population in two typical cities in southern China as well as office staff in a fixed indoor environment. SD samples from the corresponding areas were also sampled. The wipes and SD were analyzed for tracer elements (aluminum, barium, manganese, titanium, and vanadium). The SD-skin adherence factors were 14.31 μg/cm² for adults in Changzhou, 7.25 μg/cm² for adults in Shantou, and 9.37 μg/cm² for children in Shantou, respectively. Further, the recommended values for indoor SD-skin adherence factors for adults and children in Southern China were calculated to be 11.50 μg/cm² and 9.37 μg/cm², respectively, which were lower than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) recommended values. And the SD-skin adherence factor value for the office staff was small (1.79 μg/cm²), but the data were more stable. In addition, PBDEs and PCBs in dust samples from industrial and residential area in Shantou were also determined, and health risks were assessed using the dermal exposure parameters measured in this study. None of the organic pollutants posed a health risk to adults and children via dermal contact. These studies emphasized the importance of localized dermal exposure parameters, and further studies should be conducted in the future.

Integrated Insights into Source Apportionment and Source-Specific Health Risks of Potential Pollutants in Urban Park Soils on the Karst Plateau, SW China

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) pose risks to environmental and human health. Identification of priority control contaminants is important in guiding the management and control of these synchronous pollutants. A total of 247 soil samples were collected from 64 urban parks in the karst plateau city of Guiyang in SW China to determine the concentrations, spatial distributions, and health risks of PAHs and HMs. The results indicate that dibenz(ah)anthracene and benzo(a)pyrene are the main PAHs species of high ecological risk, and Cr, Mn, and Ni pose elevated ecological risk among the HMs. Four sources were identified for PAHs (biomass burning, coke oven, traffic sources, and coal burning) and HMs (traffic sources, coal burning, industrial sources, and natural sources). The non-carcinogenic risk (NCR) and total carcinogenic risk (TCR) of PAHs were all determined to be negligible and at acceptable levels, several orders of magnitude below those of HMs. The NCR and TCR values of HMs were relatively high, especially for children (11.9% of NCR > 1; 79.1% of TCR > 10-4). Coal burning and natural sources make the greatest contributions to the NCR and TCR values from karst park soils in Guiyang. Considering HMs bioavailability, NCR and TCR values were rather low, due to the high residual HM fractions. Integrated insights into source specific ecological and human health risk indicate future directions for management and control of synchronous PAH and HM pollution, particularly for karst plateau areas.

Source identification and toxicity apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface soils in Beijing and Tianjin using a PMF-TEQ method

Beijing and Tianjin are two of the largest cities in northern China with high population densities and highly developed manufacturing industries. In the past decade, some authors have reported their PAH concentrations in surface soils, identified their sources and quantitatively reported their health risks. However, the contributions of different PAH sources to their toxicity have not been reported thus far. In this study, we reviewed the PAH concentrations, contributions of different sources to the toxicity, and cancer risks in soils from different land use types found within Beijing and Tianjin from data gathered by 41 studies. The total PAH concentration varied in the range of 175.7–1989.0 ng g-1 with a higher median PAH concentration detected in urban soils (789.7 ng g-1), followed by suburban soils (647.3 ng g-1) and rural soils (390.8 ng g-1). Source identification using diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis (PCA) suggested that the PAHs in all three land use types mainly originated from biomass and coal combustion, vehicular emissions, and petrogenic processes with contributions varying from 13% to 62%. Furthermore, results from a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model suggested that vehicular emissions and coal combustion in urban soils, and the vehicular emissions, coal combustion and biomass combustion in suburban and rural soils dominated the total PAH concentrations (>85%). These results were consistent with those of the PCA model. Results of the additional toxicity apportionment performed using the PMF model suggested that vehicular emissions and coal combustion contributed the most to the toxic equivalent quantity for Benzo(a)Pyrene (BaPTEQ) and, by extension, to the carcinogenic potencies. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values suggested a low risk level for adults exposed to PAHs in the different land use types found within Beijing and Tianjin.

Pollution, ecological risk, and source identification of potentially toxic elements in sediments of a landscape urban lagoon, China

Given the great importance of Yundang lagoon (China), a detailed evaluation and source identification of multiple potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is required. Low concentrations of the PTEs were found in the Diversion canal, while high in the Main canal, Inner lagoon, and Outer lagoon. Evaluation results indicated that the pollution of PTEs was widespread, and that the extremely high eco-risks and evident toxicity were owing to the great contributions of Hg and Cd. Positive matrix factorization model demonstrated that the PTEs were from both natural and different types of anthropogenic sources. TOC played a critical role in the PTEs. It was also found that the limited environmental carrying capacity and the poor hydrological condition of the lagoon may still accumulate the pollution in a progressive fashion. These findings provide a detailed information on making effective strategies of new directions for long-term prevention of PTEs pollution in the landscape urban lagoon.

Human Health Assessment of Sixteen Priority Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Contaminated Soils of Northwestern Algeria

BACKGROUND

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous environmental organic contaminants generated by incomplete combustion of organic materials that are widely distributed in soils.

OBJECTIVES

This study represents the first attempt to examine the health toxicity of 16 detected PAHs in contaminated soil, via different exposure pathways to populations in northwestern Algeria.

METHODS

The toxicity equivalency quotients (TEQ) of PAHs were evaluated. The carcinogenic risk assessment of incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) from ingestion, inhalation, and dermal exposure pathways to each PAH in soil are described.

RESULTS

Incremental lifetime cancer risk values were in the upper limit of the tolerable range (10^-6-10^-4) for adults and children. The total cancer risk of PAH-contaminated soils for children, adolescents and adults was 2.48×10^-5, 2.04×10^-5 and 3.12×10^-5mg.kg^-1d^-1, respectively. The highest potential cancer risks were identified for adults and children, with adolescents having the lowest risks. Across exposure pathways, the dermal contact and ingestion pathways had the greatest contributions to the carcinogenic risk of human exposure to PAHs.

CONCLUSIONS

Further research and guidelines are needed for risk assessments of PAHs in agricultural, residential/urban, and industrial areas, and further risk assessments should include risks posed by exposure through air.
