Meteorological patterns, technical validation, and chemical comparison of atmospheric dust depositions and bulk sand in the Arabian Gulf region

An investigation of the effects of sand and dust storms in the North East Sahara Desert on Turkish airports and PM10 values: 7 and 8 April, 2013 events

Between April 7 and April 10, 2013, a cyclone with a value of 995 hPa that developed in the central Mediterranean transported dust from the Sahara Desert towards Turkey. At 13 airports in Turkey, dust haze and widespread dust were seen during different occasions in this period and caused the observation of so-called "Blowing dust events." This cyclone blew dust towards the Cappadocia airport, and the prevailing visibility decreased to 3800 m, making it the lowest value measured during the transition of this cyclone. In this study, Aviation Routine Weather Report (Metar) and Aviation Selected Special Weather Report (Speci) observations of airports in North Africa and Turkey were evaluated for the period between April 3 and April 11, 2013. With this cyclone the prevailing visibility at Benina Airport in Libya decreased to 50 m on April 6, 2013. This study aims to evaluate long-distance dust transport's effects on meteorological visibility at airports in Turkey and examine the episodic changes of PM₁₀ values measured by air quality monitoring stations. Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model outputs were used to determine the trajectories of long-distance dust particles. Powder red, green, and blue (RGB) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite images, Cloud-Aerosol LIDAR Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) images, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center-Dust Regional Atmosphere Model (BSC-DREAM8b) outputs, and Global Forecast System (GFS) synoptic maps were used for analysis. In addition, PM₁₀ values obtained from air quality monitoring stations were examined. According to the data obtained from the CALIPSO images, the dust concentration on the Eastern Mediterranean reaches up to 5 km. The episodic values obtained from certain air quality measurement stations are Adana 701, Gaziantep 629, Karaman 900, Nevşehir 1343, and Yozgat 782 µg/m³ on an hourly average.

Changing particle content of the modern desert dust storm: a climate × health problem

Climate and land use changes together are altering the particle content of desert dust storms on regional and local scales. These storms now carry a wide variety of pollutants and pathogens arising from urbanization, industrialization, mass transportation, warfare, or aerosolized waste in locations worldwide where deserts are intertwined with built infrastructure, transportation centers, and high-density human habitation. Accordingly, the modern desert dust storm has an anthropogenic particle load which presumably sets it apart from pre-industrial dust storms. Evidence for how particle content for modern dust storms is changing over the Arabian Peninsula holds relevance because dust storms are now more frequent and more severe. Furthermore, the Arabian Peninsula has asthma rates which are the highest worldwide. How the modern desert dust storm contributes to asthma and human health is a nascent issue. Meanwhile, public health decisions can benefit from a climate × health framework for dust storms, as proposed here. An imperative is testing each dust storm's particle content type, and for this, we propose the A-B-C-X model. Sampling a dust storm for its particle content data and then archiving samples for future analyses is advised. A storm's particle content data, once combined with its atmospheric data, allows a particle's source, transport, and deposition to be determined. In closing, the modern desert dust storm's changing particle content has far-reaching consequences for public health, transboundary issues, and international climate dialog. SIGNIFICANCE : Locally and regionally sourced particle pollution is a growing problem in deserts worldwide. Proposed here is a climate × health framework for studying how dust storm particles, entrained from both natural and engineered systems, may be contributing to declining human respiratory health.

Co-Administration of Nanowired Monoclonal Antibodies to Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase and Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Together with Antioxidant H-290/51 Reduces SiO2 Nanoparticles-Induced Exacerbation of Pathophysiology of Spinal Cord Trauma

Military personnel are often exposed to silica dust during combat operations across the globe. Exposure to silica dust in US military or service personnel could cause Desert Strom Pneumonitis also referred to as Al Eskan disease causing several organs damage and precipitate autoimmune dysfunction. However, the effects of microfine particles of sand inhalation-induced brain damage on the pathophysiology of traumatic brain or spinal cord injury are not explored. Previously intoxication of silica nanoparticles (50-60 nm size) is shown to exacerbates spinal cord injury induces blood-spinal cord barrier breakdown, edema formation and cellular changes. However, the mechanism of silica nanoparticles-induced cord pathology is still not well known. Spinal cord injury is well known to alter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) metabolism and induce oxidative stress including upregulation of nitric oxide synthase and tumor necrosis factor alpha. This suggests that these agents are involved in the pathophysiology of spinal cord injury. In this review, we examined the effects of combined nanowired delivery of monoclonal antibodies to neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) together with tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) antibodies and a potent antioxidant H-290/51 to induce neuroprotection in spinal cord injury associated with silica nanoparticles intoxication. Our results for the first time show that co-administration of nanowired delivery of antibodies to nNOS and TNF-α with H-290/51 significantly attenuated silica nanoparticles-induced exacerbation of spinal cord pathology, not reported earlier.

Temperature, humidity and outdoor air quality indicators influence COVID-19 spread rate and mortality in major cities of Saudi Arabia

There is an increasing evidence that meteorological (temperature, relative humidity, dew) and air quality indicators (PM_2.5, PM₁₀, NO₂, SO₂, CO) are affecting the COVID-19 transmission rate and the number of deaths in many countries around the globe. However, there are contradictory results due to limited observations of these parameters and absence of conclusive evidence on such relationships in cold or hot arid tropical and subtropical desert climate of Gulf region. This is the first study exploring the relationships of the meteorological (temperature, relative humidity, and dew) and air quality indicators (PM_10,CO, and SO₂) with daily COVID-19 infections and death cases for a period of six months (1st March to August 31, 2020) in six selected cities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by using generalized additive model. The Akaike information criterion (AIC) was used to assess factors affecting the infections rate and deaths through the selection of best model whereas overfitting of multivariate model was avoided by using cross-validation. Spearman correlation indicated that exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) temperature and relative humidity (R > 0.5, P < 0.0001) are the main variables affecting the daily COVID-19 infections and deaths. EWMA temperature and relative humidity showed non linear relationships with the number of COVID-19 infections and deaths (DF > 1, P < 0.0001). Daily COVID-19 infections showed a positive relationship at temperature between 23 and 34.5 °C and relative humidity ranging from 30 to 60%; a negative relationship was found below and/or above these ranges. Similarly, the number of deaths had a positive relationship at temperature ˃28.7 °C and with relative humidity ˂40%, showing higher number of deaths above this temperature and below this relative humidity rate. All air quality indicators had linear relationships with the number of COVID-19 infections and deaths (P < 0.0001). Hence, variation in temperature, relative humidity and air pollution indicators could be important factors influencing the COVID-19 spread and mortality. Under the current scenario with rising temperature and relative humidity, the number of cases is increasing, hence it justifies an active government policy to lessen COVID-19 infection rate.
