Co-transport and co-release of Eu(III) with bentonite colloids in saturated porous sand columns: Controlling factors and governing mechanisms

Co-impacts of cation type and humic acid on migration of polystyrene microplastics in saturated porous media

The aging process of microplastics (MPs) could significantly change their physical and chemical characteristics and impact their migration behavior in soil. However, the complex effects of different cations and humic acids (HA) on the migration of aged MPs through saturated media are not clear. In this research, the migration and retention of pristine/aged PSMPs (polystyrene microplastics) under combined effects of cations (Na+, Ca2+) (ionic strength = 10 mM) and HA (0, 5, 15 mg/L) were investigated and analyzed in conjunction with the two-site kinetic retention model and DLVO theory. The findings showed that the aging process accelerated PSMPs migration under all tested conditions. Aged PSMPs were less susceptible to Ca2+ than pristine PSMPs. Under Ca2+ conditions, pristine/aged PSMPs showed higher retention than under Na+ conditions in the absence of HA. Furthermore, under Na+ conditions, the migration of aged PSMPs significantly increased at higher concentrations of HA. However, under Ca2+ conditions, the migration of aged PSMPs decreased significantly at higher concentrations of HA. In higher HA conditions, HA, Ca2+, and PSMPs interact to cause larger aggregations, resulting in the sedimentation of aged PSMPs. The DLVO calculations and two-site kinetic retention models' results showed the detention of PSMPs was irreversible under higher HA conditions (15 mg/L) with Ca2+, and aged PSMPs were more susceptible to clogging. These findings may help to understand the potential risk of migration behavior of PSMPs in the soil-groundwater environment.

Comparison of the arsenic protective effects of four nanomaterials on pakchoi in an alkaline soil

Accurately applying engineered nanoparticles (NPs) in farmland stress management is important for sustainable agriculture and food safety. We investigated the protective effects of four engineered NPs (SiO2, CeO2, ZnO, and S) on pakchoi under arsenic (As) stress using pot experiments. The results showed that CeO2, SiO2, and S NPs resulted in biomass reduction, while ZnO NPs (100 and 500 mg kg-1) significantly increased shoot height. Although 500 mg kg-1 S NPs rapidly dissolved to release SO42-, reducing soil pH and pore water As content and further reducing shoot As content by 21.6 %, the growth phenotype was inferior to that obtained with 100 mg kg-1 ZnO NPs, probably due to acid damage. The addition of 100 mg kg-1 ZnO NPs not only significantly reduced the total As content in pakchoi by 23.9 % compared to the As-alone treatment but also enhanced plant antioxidative activity by increasing superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities and decreasing malondialdehyde (MDA) content. ZnO NPs in soil might inhibit As uptake by roots by increasing the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by 19.12 %. According to the DLVO theory, ZnO NPs were the most effective in preventing As in pore water from entering plant roots due to their smaller hydrated particle size. Redundancy analysis (RDA) further confirmed that DOC and SO42- were the primary factors controlling plant As uptake under the ZnO NP and S NP treatments, respectively. These findings provide an important basis for the safer and more sustainable application of NP-conjugated agrochemicals.

Fate and cotransport of Pb(II) and Cd(II) heavy ions with bentonite colloidal flow in saturated porous media: The role of filter cake, counter ions, colloid concentration, and fluid velocity

This study examines the transport and retention of colloidal particles and heavy ions in porous sand, focusing on the environmental risks associated with waste from oil and gas drilling. Experimental and numerical models assess the influence of flow rate, external filter cake layer, and ionic strength on bentonite clay particles and heavy ions, such as cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), in near-wellbore (high-flux) and far-field (low-flux) scenarios. Colloidal filtration theory and the one-dimensional convection-dispersion equation with two-site kinetic model for attachment and detachment were utilized to calibrate and predict the transport of colloidal suspension in porous media. The research investigates the role of internal and external filter cakes on sand column pressure distribution and heavy ion absorption. Results indicate that the mobility of colloids and heavy ions is influenced by the ionic strength and pH of the carrying fluid. Colloidal clay suspensions show a higher affinity for Pb (II) absorption, while Cd (II) exhibits increased mobility in both clean sand and colloidal environments. Notably, the formation of an external filter cake significantly delays the breakthrough of heavy ions, up to four times longer than in clean sand, and reduces Cd (II) and Pb (II) outlet concentrations by 86% and 93%, respectively. This cake also limits clay concentration and particle size passage. High clay concentrations or injections under high ionic conditions induce clay bridging in pore throats, enhancing internal filtration and heavy ion retention. Conversely, low clay fluxes allow freer particle passage, increasing heavy ion loads and outlet concentrations.

Insight into Impact of Phosphate on the Cotransport and Corelease of Eu(III) with Bentonite Colloids in Saturated Quartz Columns

Understanding the fate and transport of radionuclides in porous media reduces the risk of contaminating soils and groundwater systems. While the cotransport of bentonite colloids (BC) with radionuclides in saturated media is well documented, the role of phosphate (P) in the colloid-driven transport of radionuclides in saturated porous media is still unaddressed; in particular, phosphate increases the mobilities of radionuclides in porous media, which should be subjected to an environmental risk assessment and model construction. In this work, the effects of phosphate on the transport and release of Eu(III) in different colloid systems (P-Eu(III), P-BC, P-BC-Eu(III)) was investigated with a fundamental colloid chemistry approach and a range of characterization techniques. The results showed that intrinsic europium colloids with size of 685 nm were formed by precipitation with phosphate, which affected the mobility of Eu(III) due to colloid stability and physical straining. Phosphate enhanced BC and BC-Eu(III) transport, and a high phosphate concentration promoted BC transport by eliminating physical straining and enhancing the electrostatic repulsions. The crystal structure of EuPO4 was not destroyed by the subsequent introduction of BC, which carried EuPO4 for further migration. However, when phosphate, bentonite and Eu(III) coexisted in a colloid suspension, the phosphate promoted Eu(III) transport by preferentially interacting with the BC to form ternary BC-P-Eu(III) pseudo-colloids rather than forming the intrinsic EuPO4 colloids. The synergetic role of P and BC on Eu(III) transport involved a relatively complex process and was not a simply additive effect. The findings in this work highlight the significance of phosphate in controlling the fate and transport of Ln(III)/Am(III) radionuclides in the presence of intrinsic colloids and pseudo-colloids in P-rich colloid-bearing environments.

Nano- and micro-plastic transport in soil and groundwater environments: Sources, behaviors, theories, and models

With the increasing use of plastics, nano- and micro-plastic (NMP) pollution has become a hot topic in the scientific community. Ubiquitous NMPs, as emerging contaminants, are becoming a global issue owing to their persistence and potential toxicity. Compared with studies of marine and freshwater environments, investigations into the sources, transport properties, and fate of NMPs in soil and groundwater environments remain at a primary stage. Hence, the promotion of such research is critically important. Here, we integrate existing information and recent advancements to compile a comprehensive evaluation of the sources and transport properties of NMPs in soil and groundwater environments. We first provide a systematic description of the various sources and transport behaviors of NMPs. We then discuss the theories (e.g., clean-bed filtration and Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theories) and models (e.g., single-site and dual-site kinetic retention and transport models) of NMP transport through saturated porous media. Finally, we outline the potential limitations of current research and suggest directions for future research. Overall, this review intends to assimilate and outline current knowledge and provide a useful reference frame to determine the sources and transport properties of NMPs in soil and groundwater environments.

Bentonite colloids mediated Eu(III) migration in homogeneous and heterogeneous media of Beishan granite and fracture-filling materials

Accurate prediction of radionuclide migration directed by colloids in a repository environment is critical for the long-term safety assessment of radioactive waste disposal. Yet, there remains a paucity of research focusing on the migration and release processes of radionuclides combined with colloids associated with the repository, e.g., granite, and especially fracture-filling materials (FFMs). Further, the impact of heterogeneity on radionuclide migration in these media remains unclear. Thus, laboratory-scale column experiments were conducted to explore the migration behaviors of Eu(III) and bentonite colloids (BCs) in both homogeneously and heterogeneously configured columns. It was observed that the migration of BCs can be influenced by the configuration of media and ionic strength of solution. FFMs exhibited a higher retardation capacity for BCs than granite, and the retention ability of the heterogenous media (Granite-FFMs) was intermediate between that of granite and FFMs. The retardation of BCs increased with increasing ionic strength. Despite the "irreversibility" of Eu(III) adsorption on these media with insensitivity on ionic strength, the presence of BCs can grab the immobilized Eu(III) and carry more amount of adsorbed Eu(III) into the mobile phase at higher ionic strength. Even with the rinse of BCs flow, FFMs still revealed a better retardation ability for Eu(III) than granite. These findings are essential for predicting the geological fate and the release risk of radionuclides in the Beishan repository environment.

Co-transport of biochar nanoparticles (BC NPs) and rare earth elements (REEs) in water-saturated porous media: New insights into REE fractionation

The present study investigated the co-transport behavior of three REEs³⁺ (La³⁺, Gd³⁺, and Yb³⁺) with and without biochar nanoparticles (BC NPs) in water-saturated porous media. The presence of REEs³⁺ enhanced the retention of BC NPs in quartz sand (QS) due to decreased electrostatic repulsion between BC NPs and QS, enhanced aggregation of BC NPs, and the contribution of straining. The distribution coefficients (K_D) in packed columns in the co-transport of BC NPs and three REEs³⁺ were much smaller than in batch experiments due to the different hydrodynamic conditions. In addition, we, for the first time, found that REE fractionation in the solid-liquid phase occurred during the co-transport of REEs³⁺ in the presence and absence of BC NPs. Note that the REE fractionation during the co-transport, which is helpful for the tracing application during earth surface processes, was driven by the interaction of REEs³⁺ with QS and BC NPs. This study elucidates novel insights into the fate of BC NPs and REEs³⁺ in porous media and indicates that (i) mutual effects between BC NPs and REE³⁺ should be considered when BC was applied to REE contaminated aquatic and soil systems; and (ii) REE fractionation provides a useful tool for identifying the sources of coexisting substances.

Long-distance mobilization of chromium(III) in soil associated with submicron Cr2O3

Trivalent chromium is generally assumed to form insoluble species, resulting in low mobility of Cr(III) in soils. Here, we report continuous distributions (0-19 m) of a high concentration of Cr(III) in the alkaline soils of a historically industrial site for producing Na₂Cr₂O₇, CrO₃, and Cr₂O₃, which challenges this abovementioned conventional wisdom. The thermodynamic equilibrium model showed the low possibility of Cr(III) originating from Cr(VI) reduction under the redox conditions of this study. The AF4-MALLS-ICP-MS and μ-XRF-XANES were used to identify the particle size distribution of Cr(III)-containing colloids and Cr(III) species in mobile colloids. In any soil layer, Cr(III) accounts for 71.1-94.3% of the total Cr in submicron soil colloids and is composed of submicron intrinsic Cr₂O₃ (55.2%-63.8%), Cr(OH)₃ (0-33.0%), and Cr(III) adsorbed by ferrihydrite (0-19.0%) and clay montmorillonite (11.1%-21.1%) colloid. On the contrary, Cr(VI) was mainly distributed in bulk soil (> 2 µm) except for the topsoil, accounting for 62.6-90.0% of total Cr(VI). Organic matter content and soil texture are the most critical factors driving the mobilization of submicron colloids in soils by principal component analysis. Humic acid (HA) formed HA-corona on Cr₂O₃ surface and enhanced colloidal dispersion, thereby accelerating the long-distance mobilization of submicron Cr₂O₃ colloids in alkaline soil layers, whereas the heteroaggregation of clay colloid with Cr₂O₃ was only favorable for short-distance mobilization. Our findings help to re-recognize the potential migration risks of insoluble heavy metals in soils.

Transport of plastic particles in natural porous media under freeze-thaw treatment: Effects of porous media property

Freeze-thaw (FT) cycles would alter physical and chemical properties of soil and thus influence the transport of plastic particles (one type of emerging contaminant with great concerns). This study was designed to investigate the effects of FT treatment on the mobility of plastic particles (nanoplastics as representative) in columns packed with natural soils (i.e. loamy sand and sandy soil, quartz sand employed as comparison). We found that FT treatment of different types of porous media would induce different transport behaviors of plastic particles. Specifically, FT treatment of quartz sand did not affect plastic particles mobility. While FT treatment of loamy sand and sandy soil increased plastic particles transport. The increased pore sizes and disintegration of small soil particles from soils (the detached soil would serve as mobile vehicle for the transport of plastic particle) led to the facilitated mobility of plastic particles in two types of soils after FT treatment. The presence of preferential flow paths induced by FT treatment also drove to the enhanced mobility of plastic particles in sandy soil with FT treatment. This study clearly showed that the mobility of model plastic particles in two types of natural soils was greatly enhanced by FT treatment.

Effects of solution chemistry and humic acid on transport and deposition of aged microplastics in unsaturated porous media

Microplastics (MPs) are susceptible to aging in the environment, and aged MPs are highly migratory in soil due to their smaller particle size and more negative surface charge, but the effects of soil environmental factors on the fate and transport of aged MPs are still unclear. In this study, the transport behavior of pristine/aged MPs in unsaturated sandy porous media was examined under different ionic strength (IS), cationic type (Na⁺, Ca²⁺) and humic acid (HA) conditions. The results indicated that the surface charge, surface oxygen-containing functional groups and surface morphology of MPs changed significantly after aging, and that the mobility of aged MPs was significantly enhanced than the pristine MPs under all test conditions. The retention amounts of pristine/aged MPs in unsaturated porous media increased with IS, and IS had a less inhibitory effect on the transport of aged MPs than pristine MPs. The mobility of pristine/aged MPs in Ca²⁺ solutions was significantly weaker than that in Na⁺ solutions due to enhanced straining and electrostatic adsorption. HA promoted the mobility of pristine/aged MPs in unsaturated porous media under all IS Na⁺ (1, 10, and 25 mM) solutions and lower IS (1 mM) Ca²⁺ solutions, and the ability of HA to promote the transport of aged MPs was significantly stronger than that of pristine MPs due to the higher adsorption of HA on the surface of aged MPs. However, at higher IS (10 mM) Ca²⁺ solution conditions, the bridging effect of Ca²⁺ led to the formation of HA-MPs complexes, which altered the hydrophobicity of the pristine/aged MPs surface and the pristine/aged MPs were mainly retained on the air-water interface (AWI). CFT theory and two-site kinetic retention models indicated that the retention of pristine/aged MPs in unsaturated media was dominated by monolayer adsorption, straining and clogging effects. The current research findings may provide insights into the fate and transport of aged MPs in soil and their potential risk of groundwater contamination.

Transport characteristics of polystyrene microplastics in saturated porous media with biochar/Fe3O4-biochar under various chemical conditions

Magnetically modified biochar, with a rougher surface and more positive surface charge, may interact with microplastics (MPs) after being applied to soil, potentially altering the fate and transport of MPs in porous media. In this study, the transport and retention behavior of polystyrene microplastics (PSMPs) in a sandy porous media mixed with biochar/Fe₃O₄ modified biochar (Fe₃O₄-biochar) was investigated under various chemical conditions (humic acid (HA), ionic strength (IS) and cationic types (Na⁺/Ca²⁺)). The results showed that the addition of biochar and Fe₃O₄-biochar can hinder the transport of PSMPs in porous media without HA, and that Fe₃O₄-biochar was more effective in inhibiting the transport of PSMPs through electrostatic adsorption and complexation, with an optimum retention efficiency of 92.36 %. HA significantly attenuated the retention of PSMPs in both porous media through electrostatic repulsion, steric resistance and competitive adsorption under 1 mM Na⁺ solutions, and the mobility of PSMPs in Fe₃O₄-biochar/sand was enhanced more significantly than in biochar/sand with the increase of HA concentration. IS significantly inhibited the transport of PSMPs in both porous media in the absence of HA, but there was an antagonistic effect of HA and IS on the transport of PSMPs in the presence of HA, with the facilitative effect of HA being stronger than the inhibitory effect of IS. Ca²⁺ was consistently more effective in inhibiting the transport of PSMPs than Na⁺ under all test conditions, and HA promoted the transport of PSMPs in all Na⁺ solutions, while it inhibited the transport of PSMPs in high IS (10 mM) with Ca²⁺ solutions. In addition, HA, Fe₃O₄-biochar and PSMPs tend to form larger aggregates under the complex interactions of Ca²⁺, leading to increased retention of PSMPs in porous media. The two-site kinetic retention models suggested that the retention of PSMPs in porous media with biochar was predominantly reversible attachment effect, while retention in porous media with Fe₃O₄-biochar was predominantly an irreversible straining effect.
