A mechanistic study on Decontamination of Methyl Orange Dyes from Aqueous Phase by Mesoporous Pulp Waste and Polyaniline

Insights from computational analysis: Excited-state hydrogen-bonding interactions and ESIPT processes in phenothiazine derivatives

Organic materials with Mechanofluorochromism (MFC) properties have potential application value. Phenothiazine derivatives are a class of substances with MFC properties that have been synthesized and reported in experiments (Dyes and Pigments 172 (2020) 107835). Dual fluorescence of a series of phenothiazine derivatives is observed in the experiment, which proved that the ESIPT process is carried out. In this work, we choose phenothiazine derivatives (C2PAHN, C4PAHN, C8PAHN) as models to theoretically analyze the influence of different alkyl chain lengths on the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). In addition, the shift value of fluorescence spectrum is related to the length of alkyl chain. The fluorescence shift of C2PAHN is the largest (6.31 nm), and that of C8PAHN is the smallest (2.40 nm). The theory of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) are adopted to simulate the molecular dynamics in the ground state and excited state. The analysis of the optimized molecular geometry parameters and infrared vibrational spectroscopy (IR) illustrate the stronger hydrogen bonding of the excited state molecules, which is favorable for the progress of ESIPT. Fluorescence spectroscopy reveals that the appropriate increase or decrease of alkyl chains would change the photophysical properties of the molecules. Frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) indicate that the rearrangement of electron density from electronic level to is the driving force of the ESIPT process. Reduction density gradient (RDG) surfaces and Natural Population Analysis (NPA) tentatively lead to the conclusion that alkyl chain length is inversely proportional to hydrogen bond strength. Finally, the data are qualitatively analyzed by scanning the potential energy curves, and it is concluded that the longer the alkyl chain, the weaker the hydrogen bonding effect and the more unfavorable the ESIPT process.

Unravelling the Methylene Blue Adsorption Mechanism on Doped and Nondoped Polyaniline: A Combined Molecular Modeling and Experimental Investigation

A multiscale investigation including computational chemistry calculations and experimental studies was performed to elucidate and understand the methylene blue (MB) adsorption on polyaniline (PANI) from an aqueous solution. Static DFT and DFT-based ab initio molecular dynamics were used to characterize the intermolecular interactions of this dye molecule with nondoped and doped PANI. Experimental adsorption studies at different operating conditions were performed to complement the mechanism analysis of this adsorption system. Infrared spectroscopy studies and ab initio calculations showed the important role of π-π stacking and van der Waals interactions for the dye adsorption on PANI. Experimental results of MB adsorption on the PANI surface indicated that alkaline conditions were more favorable than acidic conditions where the MB adsorption capacity ranged from 9.91 mg/g at pH 1.8 to 23.16 mg/g at pH 10.9. Equilibrium adsorption studies with nondoped PANI revealed a fast removal of the dye molecules where the equilibrium adsorption was reached after 45 minutes. The kinetic parameters were calculated with the pseudo-second and pseudo-first order models, while the adsorption mechanism was analyzed using the intraparticle diffusion, Boyd, and Elovich models. Dye adsorption equilibrium was studied at pH 8 and 30 °C where Temkin, Freundlich, Langmuir, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm models as well as a statistical physics monolayer model were employed in data analysis. The saturation dye adsorption capacity was 40.2 mg/g where an inclined adsorption orientation of dye molecules on the PANI surface could be expected with an adsorption energy of 14.0 kJ/mol. This interaction energy clearly indicated that only physical interactions were involved in the MB dye adsorption mechanism, which was also confirmed by the calculations with the D-R isotherm model. These theoretical and experimental results are important to understand the dye adsorption properties of conductive polymers and to consolidate their application in the synthesis of new adsorbents and composites for water treatment.

Fluorescent detection mechanism of CO-releasing molecule-3: Competition of inter-/intra-molecular hydrogen bonds

The fluorescent detection mechanism of 2-(4-nitro-1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl) acetic acid (CORM3-green) on CO-Releasing Molecule-3 (CORM-3) is theoretically studied. Upon reaction with CORM-3, the non-fluorescent CORM3-green is transferred to the keto form of 2-(4-amino-1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)acetic acid (PTI) to produce strong fluorescence peak located at 423 nm. This peak red-shifts to 489 nm, which is induced by the strengthening of intermolecular hydrogen bond (HB) between PTI and water molecules and attributed to the experimentally observed fluorescence emission at 503 nm. This result is dramatically different from previous reports that the experimental fluorescence corresponds to the proton transferred enol form of PTI. To illustrate this confusion, the calculated fluorescence peak of PTI-Enol is located at 689 nm, which is much larger than that of experimental result. This result excludes the occurrence of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). It is concluded that intermolecular HBs hinders the formation of intramolecular HB and the ESIPT of the keto form of PTI. This conclusion confirms that experimental Stokes shift of 113 nm is mainly caused by the intermolecular hydrogen bonding rather than by ESIPT process. This work proposes a reasonable explanation for the detection mechanism of CORM3-green and experimental fluorescence phenomenon.

Re-utilization of Chinese medicinal herbal residue: waste wormwood rod-derived porous carbon as a low-cost adsorbent for methyl orange removal

A cost-effective approach was applied to prepare porous carbon samples by the simple carbonization of wormwood rod followed by salt activator (NaCl) activation. The effect of preparation parameters on the characteristics of the wormwood rod-based porous carbons (WWRs) were studied. The properties of these samples were investigated by SEM, BET surface area, X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. The prepared WWRs were applied as new adsorbent materials to remove methyl orange (MO). The experimental results indicated that WWR-800 activated at 800 °C possesses the best adsorption performance. Several factors that affected the adsorption property of the system such as the solution pH, dosing of adsorbent, initial dye concentration and ionic strength were examined. In addition, the thermodynamic parameters and kinetic parameters of MO with WWR-800 were studied. The results indicated that the adsorption of MO on WWR-800 was an endothermic process and non-spontaneous under standard conditions. The maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of MO on WWR-800 was 454.55 mg/g. After five adsorption/desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity of MO on WWR-800 remained at 94%, which indicated that wormwood rod-based porous carbon possessed good reusability.

Substituent effect on ESIPT mechanisms and photophysical properties of HBT derivatives

Substituent effects on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and photophysical properties of 2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl) benzothiazole (HBT) derivatives have been theoretically unveiled via the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT). The optimized geometrical configurations and normal mode analyses confirm that the proton transfer processes are more reactive in excited state. Through calculating the activation energies and rate constants of ESIPT processes, finding that the processes are increasingly inactive when substituent group changes from -CN, -CO₂Me, -Cl, -Me, -NMe₂ to -NO₂. In addition, the photophysical properties analyses indicate the vertical transition energies are in good agreement with those observed in experiment. Note that all the absorption and emission maxima of enol and keto forms have the significant red-shift. In order to clarify the substituent effect on ESIPT and photophysical properties, we draw the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) isosurfaces and calculate the distances of electrons and holes and atomic charges. It follows that the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) degrees are increasingly enlarged as substituting from -CN, -CO₂Me, -Cl, -Me, -NMe₂ to -NO₂ groups, which not only causes the red-shift of absorption and emission of enol and keto forms, but also affects the charge distribution of proton donor and acceptor, inhibiting the occurrence of ESIPT processes.

Nigella sativa seed based nanohybrid composite-Fe2O3-SnO2/BC: A novel material for enhanced adsorptive removal of methylene blue from water

In this work, an advance approach is reported for the water treatment technology using nanohybrid composite Fe₂O₃-SnO₂/BC prepared by incorporation of iron-tin binary oxide into the cellulosic framework of medicinally active Nigella sativa (Black cumin) seed powder. The co-precipitation method was followed to prepare the nanohybrid composite which was subjected to investigate its physiochemical properties using spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of highly functionalized nanocomposite through the hydrogen and electrostatic interactions between the functional groups of seeds and Fe₂O₃-SnO₂. X-ray and selected area electron diffraction pattern revealed the presence of cubic phase of γ-Fe₂O₃ and tetragonal phase of SnO₂ in the composite. The scanning electron microscopic images suggested the porous and relatively smooth surface of the composite, and transmittance electron microscopic images showed the trapping of nano-cubes of Fe₂O₃-SnO₂, having particles size in the range 95-185 nm, into the organic framework of Black cumin seeds, whose zero point charge was found at pH 7.2. The composite was investigated for adsorption of Methylene blue dye from water for which the results revealed that 2.0 gL^-1 amount of Fe₂O₃-SnO₂/BC was sufficient to remove more than 95% dye, within 15 min, at 6-9 pH, from its 10 mgL^-1 concentration. The thermodynamic studies established spontaneity, feasibility, and endothermic nature of the adsorption process. The adsorption data was satisfactorily described by the Freundlich isotherm which indicated inhomogeneous surface of the composite. Application of Temkin isotherm revealed the same extent of bonding probability and heat of adsorption at 27, 35, and 45 °C. The free energy change calculated from Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm suggested weak interaction between Methylene blue and Fe₂O₃-SnO₂/BC. The process satisfactorily followed the pseudo-second order kinetics that was controlled by the film diffusion step which indicated interaction of Methylene blue with functional sites of the Fe₂O₃-SnO₂/BC. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis gave the confirmatory evidence for interaction of Methylene blue to Fe₂O₃-SnO₂/BC. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of the Fe₂O₃-SnO₂/BC was found to be 58.82 mgg^-1 at 27 °C which is higher than the previously reported adsorbents, MnFe₂O₄/BC [J. Clean. Prod. 2018. 200, 996-1008], and Fe₂O₃-ZrO₂/BC [J. Clean. Prod. 2019. 223, 849-868]. Therefore, the study showed excellent results for water treatment and can be useful to develop advance water treatment technology.

Nigella sativa seed based nanocomposite-MnO2/BC: An antibacterial material for photocatalytic degradation, and adsorptive removal of Methylene blue from water

Antimicrobial Nigella sativa seed-based nanocomposite, MnO₂/BC, was synthesized and utilized for the water purification through adsorption, and the photocatalytic degradation. MnO₂/BC was prepared by co-precipitation method, and characterized using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, and DSC techniques. The composite was investigated for inhibition of bacterial cells growth. FT-IR spectrum indicated the presence of oxygenous groups on the surface; TGA and DSC showed thermal degradation; and XRD, SEM, and TEM investigations indicated amorphous, and porous nature of MnO₂/BC having particle size of 190-220 nm. The nanocomposite inhibited the growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria cells in water. The adsorption of Methylene blue from water was investigated in batch method in terms of amount of MnO₂/BC, dye concentration, pH, time, and temperature. 1.0 g L^-1 of MnO₂/BC removed more than 98% of Methylene blue from aqueous solution having concentration of 10 mg L^-1 and pH 7.0 at 27 °C. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of MnO₂/BC was 185.185 mg g^-1 at 45 °C. The adsorption was an endothermic process which obeyed Freundlich isotherm, and pseudo-second order kinetics. Therefore, the Methylene blue binding onto MnO₂/BC surface was site-specific partially through the weak hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interactions. The photocatalytic activity of MnO₂/BC has been investigated by degrading the Methylene blue molecules/ions in water under the sunlight and 85% of degradation was achieved during 120 min irradiation. The dye was desorbed at lower pH and regenerated MnO₂/BC was used for second cycle of Methylene blue adsorption. The results obtained for this study are much better than the previous Methylene blue adsorption studies with acid washed Black cumin seeds and MnFe₂O₄/BC for which the capacities were 73.529 mg g^-1 and 10.070 mg g^-1 at 27 °C, respectively (J. Mol. liq. 2018a, 264, 275-284; J. Clean. Prod. 2018a, 200, 996-1008).

Green synthesis of CuO nanomaterials and their proficient use for organic waste removal and antimicrobial application

Copper oxide (CuO) nanomaterials (NMs) of different size and morphology were synthesized by Chemical precipitation, Microwave irradiation and Hydrothermal method and characterized by TEM, BET, FTIR, XRD and EDX analysis. As synthesized CuO NMs were utilized for elimination of harmful dyes viz. Direct Red 81 (DR-81) and Coomassie Brilliant blue R-250 (BBR-250) and pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). Owing to their morphology, smaller size and relatively high surface area (40.320 m² g^-1), CuO NMs prepared by chemical precipitation method were observed to show better adsorption capacity for both the dyes (68.70 (DR-81) and 73.04 (BBR-250) mg g^-1). The influence of different experimental conditions was studied by the methodical assessments of various parameters such as pH, adsorbent dose, concentration and contact time. Moreover, different adsorption isotherms and pseudo-second order kinetic model were applied to understand the adsorption mechanism. Langmuir model was found to be best fit thus confirming the monolayer adsorption process. To ensure the practical utility of CuO NMs for organic waste removal, the adsorption studies were performed in the presence of different inorganic ions and real water samples. In addition, recovery of the dye and NMs were also carried out effectively by simple method, thus avoiding the secondary pollution. CuO NMs were observed to exhibit significant antibacterial activity against the human pathogenic bacteria. These studies demonstrated that synthesized CuO NMs showed good adsorption efficiency for the removal of harmful dyes and antimicrobial activity against the pathogenic bacteria, which vary as a function of size and surface area.

Strong enhancement of methylene blue removal from binary wastewater by in-situ ferrite process

Dye wastewater containing heavy metal ions is a common industrial effluent with complex physicochemical properties. The treatment of metal-dye binary wastewater is difficult. In this work, a novel in-situ ferrite process (IFP) was applied to treat Methylene Blue (MB)-Cu(II) binary wastewater, and the operational parameters were optimized for MB removal. Results showed that the optimum operating conditions were OH/M of 1.72, Cu²⁺/Fe²⁺ ratio of 1/2.5, reaction time of 90min, aeration intensity of 320mL/min, and reaction temperature of 40°C. Moreover, the presence of Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ moderately influenced the MB removal. Physical characterization results indicated that the precipitates yielded in IFP presented high surface area (232.50m²/g) and a multi-porous structure. Based on the Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacity toward MB was 347.82mg/g for the precipitates produced in IFP, which outperformed most other adsorbents. Furthermore, IFP rapidly sequestered MB with removal efficiency 5 to 10 times greater than that by general ferrite adsorption, which suggested a strong enhancement of MB removal by IFP. The MB removal process by IFP showed two different high removal stages, each with a corresponding removal mechanism. In the first brief stage (<5min), the initial high MB removal (~95%) was achieved by predominantly electrostatic interactions. Then the sweep effect and encapsulation were dominant in the second longer stage.

Removal of methyl orange dye and copper (II) ions from aqueous solution using polyaniline-coated kapok (Ceiba pentandra) fibers

Hollow tubular structured kapok fibers (Ceiba pentandra) were coated with polyaniline (PANI) molecules using an in situ oxidative polymerization technique. The tubular morphology of the kapok fibers was retained after PANI coating. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum of the PANI-coated kapok fibers illustrated the vibration modes associated with the presence of PANI molecules. The PANI-treated kapok fibers achieved complete wettability with water molecules (zero water contact angle) from initially being highly hydrophobic (contact angle = 120°). In the present work, the removal of contaminants such as methyl orange dye and Cu(II) from aqueous solution using polyaniline-coated kapok fibers was investigated. Isotherm studies show that the removal of methyl orange dye (R² ≥ 0.959) and Cu(II) (R² ≥ 0.972) using PANI-coated kapok fibers follow the Langmuir isotherm model with maximum sorption capacities determined to be 75.76 and 81.04 mg/g, respectively. Based from thermodynamic studies, the sorption of methyl orange dye and Cu(II) are endothermic, feasible and spontaneous. Furthermore, kinetic studies show that the both processes follow a pseudo-second-order model, implying that the rate-determining step is chemisorption.
