One step forward: How can functionalization enhance the adsorptive properties of graphene towards metallic ions and dyes?

Design and preparation of a novel Mg-Al LDH@EDTA-Melamine nanocomposite for effective adsorptive removal of methylene blue and rhodamine B dyes from water

This paper deals with the preparation of a novel nanocomposite consisted of magnesium-aluminum layered double hydroxide (Mg-Al LDH) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as well as melamine (MA) as an adsorbent. This nanocomposite was utilized to adsorb different dyes such as rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) from water. The prepared adsorbent was characterized using FT-IR, EDS, XRD, TGA, and FE-SEM analyses. The effects of various parameters such as concentration, time, adsorbent dosage, temperature, and pH were tested to investigate their influence on adsorption conditions. Both methylene blue and rhodamine B dyes showed pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics, and their adsorption followed the Langmuir isotherm. Moreover, the maximum adsorption capacities for methylene blue and rhodamine B were found to be 1111.103 mg/g at 45 °C and 232.558 mg/g at 60 °C, respectively. Additionally, the adsorption processes were found to be spontaneous (ΔG°< 0, for both dyes) and exothermic (ΔH° = -12.42 kJ/mol for methylene blue and ΔH° = -25.84 kJ/mol for rhodamine B) for both dyes. Hydrogen bonding and electrostatic forces are responsible for the interactions occur between the nanocomposite and the functional groups in the dyes. The experimental findings demonstrated a greater adsorption rate of MB than RhB, suggesting the adsorbent's stronger affinity for MB. This preference is likely due to MB's size, specific functional groups, and smaller molecule size, enabling stronger interactions and more efficient access to adsorption sites compared to RhB. Even after recycling 4 times, the dye adsorption percentages of the adsorbent for MB and RhB dyes were 90 % and 87 %, but the desorption percentages of the adsorbate dyes were 85 % and 80 %, respectively. The prepared adsorbent boasts several unique properties, such as the swift and effortless adsorption of MB and RhB dyes, straightforward synthesis, mild adsorption conditions, remarkable efficiency, and the ability to be recycled up to 4 times without a significant decrease in activity.

A review on sustainable management of biomass: physicochemical modification and its application for the removal of recalcitrant pollutants-challenges, opportunities, and future directions

Adsorption is one of the most efficient methods for remediating industrial recalcitrant wastewater due to its simple design and low investment cost. However, the conventional adsorbents used in adsorption have several limitations, including high cost, low removal rates, secondary waste generation, and low regeneration ability. Hence, the focus of the research has shifted to developing alternative low-cost green adsorbents from renewable resources such as biomass. In this regard, the recent progress in the modification of biomass-derived adsorbents, which are rich in cellulosic content, through a variety of techniques, including chemical, physical, and thermal processes, has been critically reviewed in this paper. In addition, the practical applications of raw and modified biomass-based adsorbents for the treatment of industrial wastewater are discussed extensively. In a nutshell, the adsorption mechanism, particularly for real wastewater, and the effects of various modifications on biomass-based adsorbents have yet to be thoroughly studied, despite the extensive research efforts devoted to their innovation. Therefore, this review provides insight into future research needed in wastewater treatment utilizing biomass-based adsorbents, as well as the possibility of commercializing biomass-based adsorbents into viable products.

Theoretical and Experimental Analysis of Hydroxyl and Epoxy Group Effects on Graphene Oxide Properties

In this study, we analyzed the impact of hydroxyl and epoxy groups on the properties of graphene oxide (GO) for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) dye from water, addressing the urgent need for effective water purification methods due to industrial pollution. Employing a dual approach, we integrated experimental techniques with theoretical modeling via density functional theory (DFT) to examine the atomic structure of GO and its adsorption capabilities. The methodology encompasses a series of experiments to evaluate the performance of GO in MB dye adsorption under different conditions, including differences in pH, dye concentration, reaction temperature, and contact time, providing a comprehensive view of its effectiveness. Theoretical DFT calculations provide insights into how hydroxyl and epoxy modifications alter the electronic properties of GO, improving adsorption efficiency. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in the dye adsorption capacity of GO, attributed to the interaction between the functional groups and MB molecules. This study not only confirms the potential of GO as a superior adsorbent for water treatment, but also contributes to the optimization of GO-based materials for environmental remediation, highlighting the synergy between experimental observations and theoretical predictions in advances in materials science to improve sustainability.

Enhancing Methylene Blue Removal through Adsorption and Photocatalysis-A Study on the GO/ZnTiO3/TiO2 Composite

This study focuses on synthesizing and characterizing a graphene oxide/ZnTiO3/TiO2 (GO/ZTO/TO) composite to efficiently remove methylene blue (MB) from water, presenting a novel solution to address industrial dye pollution. GO and ZTO/TO were synthesized by the modified Hummers and sol-gel methods, respectively, while GO/ZTO/TO was prepared using a hydrothermal process. The structural and surface properties of the composite were characterized using various analytical techniques confirming the integration of the constituent materials and suitability for dye adsorption. The study revealed that GO/ZTO/TO exhibits an adsorption capacity of 78 mg g-1 for MB, with only a 15% reduction in adsorption efficiency until the fifth reuse cycle. Furthermore, the study suggests optimal adsorption near neutral pH and enhanced performance at elevated temperatures, indicating an endothermic reaction. The adsorption behavior fits the Langmuir isotherm, implying monolayer adsorption on homogeneous surfaces, and follows pseudo-second-order kinetics, highlighting chemical interactions at the surface as the rate-limiting step. The photocatalytic degradation of MB by GO/ZTO/TO follows pseudo-first-order kinetics, with a higher rate constant than that of GO alone, demonstrating the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the composite. In conclusion, GO/ZTO/TO emerges as a promising and sustainable approach for water purification, through an adsorption process and subsequent photocatalytic degradation.

Hybrid magnetic CoFe2O4@γ-Fe2O3@CTAB nanocomposites as efficient and reusable adsorbents for Remazol Brilliant Blue R dye

The main goal of the present survey was to elaborate, characterize and evaluate the efficiency of ferrite-based nanoparticles modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as potential magnetic nanoadsorbents to remove Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) from water. It is proposed an innovative nanomaterial architecture based on highly magnetic and chemically stable core@shell nanoparticles covered by an adsorptive surface layer of CTAB (CoFe2O4@γ-Fe2O3@CTAB). Samples of two different mean sizes (7.5 and 14.6 nm) were synthesized using a hydrothermal coprecipitation followed by surface treatment and functionalization. Batch tests were performed to evaluate the influence of contact time, temperature, pH, shaking rate, presence of interferents and mean size on the performance of the proposed nanomaterials. The kinetics of the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model with an equilibrium time of 20 min. The adsorption capacity was estimated by the Langmuir isotherm model and was found to be 56.3 mg/g (smaller size) and 45.6 mg/g (larger size) at pH = 3 and a shaking rate of 400 rpm. The process was spontaneous, exothermic, and showed increased randomness. Sulphate ions negatively impacted the removal of RBBR. The best performance of the nanoadsorbent based on smaller mean sizes can be correlated to its larger surface area. Regeneration and readsorption tests showed that the nanoadsorbents retain more than 80% of their original removal capacity, therefore they can be effectively recycled and reused.

Surface-modified graphene oxide-based composites for advanced sequestration of basic blue 41 from aqueous solution

Advanced materials for the efficient treatment of textile wastewater need to be developed for the sustainable growth of the textile industry. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was modified by the incorporation of natural clay (bentonite) and mixed metal oxide (copper-cobalt oxide) to produce GO-based binary and ternary composites. Two binary composites, GO/bentonite and GO/Cu-Co Ox (oxide), and one ternary composite, GO/bentonite/Cu-Co Ox, were characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The adsorption efficiency of these composites was evaluated against a cationic dye, Basic Blue 41 (BB41). The composites had several surface functional groups, and the ternary composite had tubular porous structures formed by the cross-linking of the bentonite and GO planes. The BET surface area of the ternary composite was 50% higher than that of the GO. The BB41 removals were 92, 89, 80, and 69% for GO/bentonite/Cu-Co oxide, GO/bentonite, GO and GO/Cu-Co oxide, respectively. The pseudo-2nd-order and intraparticle diffusion models best describe the kinetics results, indicating chemisorption and slow pore diffusion-controlled adsorption processes. The Langmuir isotherm-derived adsorption capacity of GO/bentonite/Cu-Co oxide was 351.1 mg/g, which was very close to the measured value. After five consecutive cycles, the ternary composite retained 90% BB41 removal efficiency compared to its 1st cycle. Electrostatic interaction and pore diffusion were predicted to be the controlling mechanisms for the adsorption of the BB41. The GO-based ternary composite can be a feasible and scalable adsorbent for BB41 in wastewater treatment.

Removal of p-Nitrophenol by Adsorption with 2-Phenylimidazole-Modified ZIF-8

Petrochemical wastewater contains p-nitrophenol, a highly toxic, bioaccumulative and persistent pollutant that can harm ecosystems and environmental sustainability. In this study, ZIF-8-PhIm was prepared for p-nitrophenol removal from petrochemical wastewater using solvent-assisted ligand exchange (SALE) with 2-phenylimidazole(2-PhIm). The ZIF-8-PhIm's composition and structure were characterised using the XRD, SEM, FT-IR, ¹H NMR, XPS and BET methods. The adsorption effect of ZIF-8-PhIm on p-nitrophenol was investigated with the static adsorption method. Compared to the ZIF-8 materials, ZIF-8-PhIm exhibited stronger π-π interactions, produced a multistage pore structure with larger pore capacity and size, and had increased hydrophilicity and exposure of adsorption sites. Under optimised conditions (dose = 0.4 g/L, T = 298 K, C₀ = 400 mg/L), ZIF-8-PhIm achieved an adsorption amount of 828.29 mg/g, which had a greater p-nitrophenol adsorption capacity compared to the ZIF-8 material. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models appropriately described the p-nitrophenol adsorption of ZIF-8-PhIm. Hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions dominated the p-nitrophenol adsorption of ZIF-8-PhIm. It also had relatively good regeneration properties.

Effective Removal of Metal ion and Organic Compounds by Non-Functionalized rGO

Effective removal of heavy metals from water is critical for environmental safety and public health. This work presents a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) obtained simply by using gallic acid and sodium ascorbate, without any high thermal process or complex functionalization, for effective removal of heavy metals. FTIR and Raman analysis show the effective conversion of graphene oxide (GO) into rGO and a large presence of defects in rGO. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms show a specific surface area of 83.5 m2/g. We also measure the zeta-potential of the material showing a value of -52 mV, which is lower compared to the -32 mV of GO. We use our rGO to test adsorption of several ion metals (Ag (I), Cu (II), Fe (II), Mn (II), and Pb(II)), and two organic contaminants, methylene blue and hydroquinone. In general, our rGO shows strong adsorption capacity of metals and methylene blue, with adsorption capacity of qmax = 243.9 mg/g for Pb(II), which is higher than several previous reports on non-functionalized rGO. Our adsorption capacity is still lower compared to functionalized graphene oxide compounds, such as chitosan, but at the expense of more complex synthesis. To prove the effectiveness of our rGO, we show cleaning of waste water from a paper photography processing operation that contains large residual amounts of hydroquinone, sulfites, and AgBr. We achieve 100% contaminants removal for 20% contaminant concentration and 63% removal for 60% contaminant concentration. Our work shows that our simple synthesis of rGO can be a simple and low-cost route to clean residual waters, especially in disadvantaged communities with low economical resources and limited manufacturing infrastructure.

Continuous removal of pharmaceutical drug chloroquine and Safranin-O dye from water using agar-graphene oxide hydrogel: Selective adsorption in batch and fixed-bed experiments

In this work, Chloroquine diphosphate, and the cationic dye Safranin-O were selectively removed from water using the agar-graphene oxide (A-GO) hydrogel, produced via simple one-step jellification process. The morphology of the A-GO biocomposite was characterized and batch experiments were performed, with adsorption isotherms satisfactorily fitting (R² > 0.98) Sips (Safranin-O) and Freundlich (Chloroquine) isotherms. Driving force models and Fick's diffusion equation were applied to the modeling of kinetic data, and a satisfactory fit was obtained. Selective adsorption carried out in batch indicated that competitive adsorption occurs when both components are mixed in water solution - the adsorptive capacities dropped ∼10 mg g^-1 for each component, remaining 41 mg g^-1 for safranin-O and 31 mg g^-1 for chloroquine. Fixed-bed breakthrough curves obtained in an adsorption column showed adsorption capacities over 63 mg g^-1 and 100 mg g^-1 for chloroquine and safranin-O, respectively, also exhibiting outstanding regenerative potentials. Overall, the biocomposite produced using graphene oxide proved to be a viable and eco-friendly alternative to continuously remove both contaminants from water.

Facile preparation of robust dual MgO-loaded carbon foam as an efficient adsorbent for malachite green removal

This study developed a facile approach for the fabrication of dual MgO-loaded carbon foam (DMCF) via carbonization of a cured MgO/cyanate ester resin mixture, which underwent self-foaming of the resin followed by the carbothermal reduction of MgO. The features of the prepared DMCF prepared were characterized by FESEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS and so on, and the effects of adsorption conditions, adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics on malachite green (MG) removal using the DMCF as adsorbents were investigated through batch adsorption experiments. Results demonstrate that the DMCF possesses a unique dual loading of MgO particles which are not only loaded onto its foam walls but also filled within the walls with a graphene-wrapped core-shell structure. The experimental maximum adsorption capacity of MG reaches up to 1874.18 mg/g with a partition coefficient of 10.87 mg/g/μM. The adsorption process can be better described with Langmuir, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models. Moreover, the DMCF exhibits a removal percentage of 84.85% after five reuses, indicating that it is an efficient and promising adsorbent for MG adsorption.
