Abstract
Microplastics are widespread pollutants, but few studies have linked field prevalence in organisms to laboratory uptakes. Aquatic filter feeders may be particularly susceptible to microplastic uptake, with the potential for trophic transfer to higher levels, including humans. Here, we surveyed microplastics from a model freshwater shrimp, common caraidina (Caridina nilotica) inhabiting the Crocodile River in South Africa to better understand microplastic uptake rates per individual. We then use functional response analysis (feeding rate as a function of resource density) to quantify uptake rates by shrimps in the laboratory. We found that microplastics were widespread in C. nilotica, with no significant differences in microplastic abundances among sampled sites under varying land uses, with an average abundance of 6.2 particles per individual. The vast majority of microplastics found was fibres (86.1%). Shrimp microplastic accumulation patterns were slightly higher in the laboratory than the field, where shrimp exhibited a hyperbolic Type II functional response model under varying exposure concentrations. Maximum feeding rates of 20 particles were found over a 6 h feeding period, and uptake evidenced at even the lowest laboratory concentrations (~10 particles per mL). These results highlight that microplastic uptake is widespread in field populations and partly density dependent, with field concentrations corroborating uptake rates recorded in the laboratory. Further research is required to elucidate trophic transfer from these taxa and to understand potential physiological impacts.

Abstract
Scylla serrata plays a crucial role in India's seafood exports yet there exists limited understanding on the occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in these crabs. In this baseline study, we examined the presence of microplastics in the digestive tracts of S. serrata collected from the Kota mangroves, southwestern coast of India. Our analysis revealed the presence of 264 MPs in all the samples with an average (± standard deviation) of 29.33 (±11.53) MPs/Individual. The most dominant categories were fibres (98.86 %) and fragments (1.14 %). Primarily 0.1-0.3 mm (50.90 %) and 0.3-1 mm (37.65 %) size range dominated. The predominant polymers were polypropylene (33.71 %), high-density polyethylene (31.44 %), and polyethylene terephthalate (17.80 %). Scanning electron microscopy revealed extensive weathering on the surface of the microplastics. Risk assessments indicated severe risks to S. serrata due to microplastic ingestion emphasizing the need to protect delicate ecosystems like mangroves and the biota within.

Abstract
The reproduction, development and growth of shrimp were hindered by cold stress, and even death was caused in severe cases. Moreover, huge economic losses to the shrimp aquaculture industry were caused every year by cold currents. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential protective effects of water additives on the cold stress resistance of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and their ability to improve the survival and stress response of the shrimp. Three potential cold-resistant additives adenosine triphosphate (A), soybean phospholipid (SP) and Clostridium butyricum (CB) on Pacific white shrimp under cold stress were added to the water with three concentrations for each additive. The mortality, activities of antioxidation enzymes and expression of anti-stress related genes in each group under cold stress were detected. The results showed that the cumulative mortality of low concentration for adenosine triphosphate (AL) and soybean phospholipid (SPL), medium concentration for soybean phospholipid (SPM) and high concentration for Clostridium butyricum (CBH) groups were significantly lower than that of the control (C) group when temperature maintained at 13 °C for 6 days. Total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) content in shrimp plasma was significantly higher, while malondialdehyde (MDA) content was significantly lower than that in the C group. Gene expression analysis showed that 0.4 mg/L of adenosine triphosphate could regulate the immune defense ability and decrease apoptosis level of Pacific white shrimp under cold stress. Soybean phospholipid (2 mg/L) could enhance the immune ability of hepatopancreas, and Clostridium butyricum (10 mg/L) could significantly increase the expression of stress-related genes in shrimp intestine. Overall, these findings suggested that adenosine triphosphate and soybean phospholipid have the potential to be used as cold-resistant additives in Pacific white shrimp culture. This study provided valuable insights into addressing the problem of cold stress in shrimp culture.

Abstract
The hepatopancreas is one of the largest organs playing crucial roles in metabolism and detoxification in crustacean invertebrates. Although toxicities have been increasingly documented for the two ubiquitous pollutants, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and microplastics (MPs), in model animals, little is known about their impacts on the hepatopancreas of crustaceans. To fill this knowledge gap, the effects of MPs and HBCD, alone or in combination, on the hepatopancreas were evaluated in a commercially important crustacean species (the whiteleg shrimp) by histological observation as well as quantification of hepatic lesion-, metabolism-, and detoxification-related parameters. In addition, to reveal potential mechanisms underlying the hepatoxicity observed, the accumulation of HBCD in the shrimp and the status of oxidative stress were also investigated. Our results demonstrated that exposure of the whiteleg shrimp to MPs and HBCD for 4 weeks resulted in evident histological injury in the hepatopancreas and marked elevation in hepatic lesion markers (alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase) in the hemolymph. Moreover, both metabolism (activity of phosphofructokinase, contents of lactic acid and adenosine triphosphate, and expression of metabolism-related genes) and detoxification (contents of cytochrome P450, UDP-glucuronosyltransferase, and glutathione, activity of glutathione S-transferase, and expression of detoxification-related genes) were found to be disrupted by the pollutants tested. In addition, exposure to MPs and HBCD also led to alterations in the contents and/or activities of antioxidant enzymes and resulted in oxidative damage to the hepatopancreas (indicated by marked elevation in malondialdehyde content). Furthermore, a significant amount of HBCD accumulated in shrimp treated with HBCD-containing seawater. The data also illustrated that HBCD-MP coexposure was more toxic than single exposure to these pollutants. These findings suggest that MPs and HBCD may exert hepatotoxic impacts on whiteleg shrimp by accumulating in vivo and inducing oxidative stress, which could pose a severe threat to the health of this important crustacean species.

Abstract
NANO: and microplastics (NPs/MPs) are a new type of persistent environmental pollutant. Microbial flocs are a type of microbial aggregate commonly used in aquaculture. To investigate the impact of NPs/MPs on microbial flocs with different particle sizes: NPs/MPs-80 nm (M 0.08), NPs/MPs-800 nm (M 0.8), and NPs/MPs-8 μm (M 8), NPs/MPs exposure tests (28 days) and ammonia nitrogen conversion tests (24 h) were conducted. The results showed that the particle size was significantly higher in the M 0.08 group when compared with the control group (C group). The TAN (total ammonia nitrogen) content of each group maintained the order of M 0.08 > M 0.8 > M 8 > C from days 12-20. The nitrite content in the M 0.08 group was significantly higher on day 28 than that in the other groups. In the ammonia nitrogen conversion test, the nitrite content of the C group was significantly lower than that of the NPs/MPs exposure groups. The results suggested that NPs contributed to microbial aggregation and affected microbial colonization. In addition, NPs/MPs exposure could reduce microbial nitrogen cycling capacity, with a size-dependent toxicity difference of NPs > MPs. The findings of this study are expected to fill the research gap on the mechanisms of NPs/MPs' impact on microorganisms and the nitrogen cycle in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract
It is impossible to overlook the effects of microplastics on aquatic life as they continuously accumulate in aquatic environments. Aquatic crustaceans, as both predator and prey, play an important role in the food web and energy transmission. It is of great practical significance to pay attention to the toxic effects of microplastics on aquatic crustaceans. This review finds that most studies have shown that microplastics negatively affect the life history, behaviors and physiological functions of aquatic crustaceans under experimental conditions. The effects of microplastics of different sizes, shapes or types on aquatic crustaceans are different. Generally, smaller microplastics have more negative effects on aquatic crustaceans. Irregular microplastics have more negative effects on aquatic crustaceans than regular microplastics. When microplastics co-exist with other contaminants, they have a greater negative impact on aquatic crustaceans than single contaminants. This review contributes to rapidly understanding the effects of microplastics on aquatic crustaceans, providing a basic framework for the ecological threat of microplastics to aquatic crustaceans.

Abstract
Currently, most studies focus on the effect of microplastics (MPs) in the exposure phase, but pay limited attention to the depuration phase. Depuration is a promising practice to achieve safe aquaculture production, which is also helpful to understand the long-term impact of MPs. Therefore, investigating the post-exposure scenarios of MPs has great practical significance. In order to provide implications for future research, this work attempted to systematize the current findings and knowledge gaps regarding the depuration of MPs. More specifically, three methods, including direct fitting, one-compartment kinetic model and interval observation, for estimating the retention time of MPs to further determine the minimum depuration time were introduced, in which the one-compartment kinetic model could also be used to calculate the depuration rate constant and biological half-life of MPs. Moreover, the post-exposure effect of MPs generally presented three scenarios: incomplete reversal (legacy effect), return to control level (recovery) and stimulatory response (hormesis-like effect). In addition, the possible tissue translocation of MPs, the influence of food abundance and body shape on MPs egestion, and the potential interaction with environmental factors, have aroused great scientific concerns and need further exploration and clarification.

Abstract
Microplastic pollution in our environment, especially water bodies is an emerging threat to food security and human health. Inevitably, the outbreak of Covid-19 has necessitated the constant use of face masks made from polymers such as polypropylene, polyurethane, polyacrylonitrile, polystyrene, polycarbonate, polyethylene, or polyester which eventually will disintegrate into microplastic particles. They can be broken down into microplastics by the weathering action of UV radiation from the sun, heat, or ocean wave-current and precipitate in natural environments. The global adoption of face masks as a preventive measure to curb the spread of Covid-19 has made the safe management of wastes from it cumbersome. Microplastics gain access into aquaculture facilities through water sources and food including planktons. The negative impacts of microplastics on aquaculture cannot be overemphasized. The impacts includes low growth rates of animals, hindered reproductive functions, neurotoxicity, low feeding habit, oxidative stress, reduced metabolic rate, and increased mortality rate among aquatic organisms. With these, there is every tendency of microplastic pollution to negatively impact fish production through aquaculture if the menace is not curbed. It is therefore recommended that biodegradable materials rather than plastics to be considered in the production of face mask while recycle of already produced ones should be encouraged to reduce waste.

Abstract
Due to the wide application of plastic products in human life, microplastic pollution in water has recently attracted more attention. Many studies have revealed the size-dependent toxicity of microplastics. Here, we investigated the toxicological effects of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on the white leg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, a profitable aquaculture species, using a comprehensive histomorphological, microbiome, and metabolomic approach to verify whether smaller particles are more toxic than larger particles. L. vannamei were experimentally exposed to water containing PS-MPs of four sizes (0.1, 1.0, 5.0, and 20.0 μm) for 24 h at 10 mg/L (acute experiment) and 12 d at 1 mg/L (subchronic experiment). After 24 h of acute exposure, PS-MP accumulation in shrimp indicated that the ingestion and egestion of PS-MPs had a size-dependent effect, and smaller particles were more bioavailable. The tissue morphological results of subchronic experiments showed that, for the guts and gills, the smaller sizes of the PS-MPs exhibited greater damage. In addition, 16 S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing showed that the alpha diversity was higher under larger PS-MP exposure. Correlated with changes in intestinal bacteria, we found a greater enrichment of metabolic pathways in hemolymph proteins and metabolites in larger PS-MP groups, such as "arginine and proline metabolism", "protein digestion and absorption", "lysine degradation". Interestingly, the activity or content of biomarkers of oxidative stress showed a peak at 1 μm and 5 μm. Under specific sizes of PS-MPs, the abundance of the pathogen Vibrio and probiotic bacteria Rhodobacter (5-μm) and Bacillus and Halomonas (1-μm) were simultaneously enriched. Our results indicated that PS-MP exposure can cause size-dependent damage to shrimp, yet specific particle size can be influential differently in regard to some research indicators. Therefore, it can enhance our comprehensive understanding of the impacts of microplastics on shrimp health and suggests that specific particle size should be considered when assessing the size-dependent toxicity of microplastics.

Abstract
Microplastic pollution has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. Not only can it be ingested by animals, but it can easily become a carrier of other pollutants, forming a composite pollutant with potentially toxic effects on organisms. We investigated the effect of Cu on the accumulation of polystyrene microplastics (PS) in the gills of Procambarus clarkii and whether PS exacerbated the immune toxicity of Cu to P. clarkii were exposed to Cu, PS and PS+Cu for 48 h, the accumulation of PS in gill and hepatopancreas immune and antioxidant indices were analyzed. The objective was to investigate the toxic effects of Ps and Cu compound pollutants on P. clarkii and whether the accumulated pollutants would cause food safety problems. The results showed that microplastic particles adhered to each other and aggregated in the PS+Cu group, and the number of microplastic particles in gill in the PS+Cu group was significantly lower than that in the PS group. Compared with the other two treatment groups, SOD, CAT, GPx activities and MDA content increased significantly in the PS+Cu group and were relatively delayed. At 12 h, 24 h, 36 h and 48 h, the SOD mRNA expression levels in the PS+Cu group were all significantly lower than those in the Cu group (P < 0.05). At 24 h and 48 h, CAT mRNA expression in the PS+Cu group was significantly higher than that in the Cu group (P < 0.05). Crustin 4 mRNA expressions in the PS+Cu group was significantly higher than that in the Cu group at 12 h and 36 h (P < 0.05). The results demonstrate that the PS and Cu compound reduced the accumulation of microplastic particles in the gill. PS particles delayed Cu entry into P. clarkii for a short time (12 h) and reduced the toxic effect, but with the increase of exposure time (24 h and 48 h), the toxic effect of PS and Cu complexes on P. clarkii increases, and the large accumulation of PS and Cu complexes may cause food safety problems.

Abstract
Microplastic pollution can interfere with aquatic animal health and nonspecific immunity, increasing the potential for pathogen infection in crustaceans. However, the long-term effects of microplastics on crustacean immunity are less understood, especially regarding their toxicity in Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Effects of high-density polyethylene microplastics (HDPE-MPs) in feed on the mortality rate, hepatopancreas, and nonspecific immune system gene expression of Pacific white shrimp are presented. The LC50 at day 28 of HDPE-MP exposure was determined as 3.074% HDPE-MP in feed. A significant upregulation of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) genes was observed in shrimp that were fed with 0.1 and 0.5% of HDPE-MP; then, they were downregulated significantly, except for the SOD gene expression of shrimp fed with 0.1% of HDPE-MP. The lysozyme (LYZ) gene was upregulated significantly in shrimp that were fed with 0.5, 1, and 3% HDPE-MP for 7 days and downregulated significantly in HDPE-receiving groups for at least 14 days. Significant histopathological changes in the hepatopancreas were observed in the treatment groups. The histopathological score of each lesion was correlated with the increase in HDPE-MP concentration. This study shows that the ingestion of HDPE microplastics can alter the expression of nonspecific immune system genes and damage the hepatopancreas in Pacific white shrimp.

Abstract
The prevalence of microplastics (MPs) in global aquatic environments has received considerable attention. Currently, concerns have been raised regarding reports that the adverse effect of MPs on aquatic animals in the exposure phase may not be (completely) reversed in the depuration phase. In order to provide insights into the legacy effect of MPs from the depuration phase, this study evaluated the kinetic characteristics and recovery potential of aquatic animals after the exposure to MPs. More specifically, a total of 68 depuration kinetic curves were highly fitted to estimate the retention time of MPs. It was shown that the retention time ranged from 1.26 to 3.01 days, corresponding to the egestion of 90 % to 99 % of ingested MPs. The retention time decreased with the increased retention rate. Furthermore, variables potentially affecting the retention time were ranked by the decision tree-based eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm, suggesting that the particle size and tested species were of great importance for explaining the difference in retention time of MPs. Moreover, a biomarker profile was recompiled to determine the toxic changes. Results indicated that the MPs-induced toxicity significantly reduced in the depuration phase, evidenced by the recovery of energy reserves and metabolism, hepatotoxicity, immunotoxicity, hematological parameters, neurotoxicity and oxidative stress. However, the continuous detoxification and remarkable genotoxicity implied that the toxicity was not completely alleviated. In addition, the current knowledge gaps are also highlighted, with recommendations proposed for future research.

Abstract
The presence of microplastics in the aquatic environment poses a serious threat not only to aquatic organisms but also to human beings that consume them. The uptake and effects of microplastics have been studied in almost all groups of aquatic organisms. This review details the different aspects of microplastics exposure in an ecologically and economically important group of crustaceans, the Decapods. A majority of Decapod crustaceans such as prawns, shrimp, crabs, lobsters and crayfish are consumed as seafood and play important roles in food chains and food webs. Numerous studies are available on the accumulation of microplastics in tissues such as the gills, hepatopancreas and gastrointestinal tract in these organisms. Experimental studies have also highlighted the toxic effects of microplastics such as oxidative stress, immunotoxicity and reproductive and developmental toxicity in them. This review also summarizes the ecological impacts and implications in human beings as well as lacunae with regard to microplastic uptake in Decapods.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), resulted in ecological changes of aquatic ecosystems, affected the aquatic food supply chain, and disrupted the socio-economy of global populations. Due to reduced human activities during the pandemic, the aquatic environment was reported to improve its water quality, wild fishery stocks, and biodiversity. However, the sudden surge of plastics and biomedical wastes during the COVID-19 pandemic masked the positive impacts and increased the risks of aquatic pollution, especially microplastics, pharmaceuticals, and disinfectants. The transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from wastewater treatment plants to natural water bodies could have serious impacts on the environment and human health, especially in developing countries with poor waste treatment facilities. The presence and persistence of SARS-CoV-2 in human excreta, wastewaters, and sludge and its transmission to aquatic ecosystems could have negative impacts on fisheries and aquaculture industries, which have direct implications on food safety and security. COVID-19 pandemic-related environmental pollution showed a high risk to aquatic food security and human health. This paper reviews the impacts of COVID-19, both positive and negative, and assesses the causes and consequences of anthropogenic activities that can be managed through effective regulation and management of eco-resources for the revival of biodiversity, ecosystem health, and sustainable aquatic food production.
