The performance of electrode ultrafiltration membrane bioreactor in treating cosmetics wastewater and its anti-fouling properties

The effect of extracellular polymeric substances on MICP solidifying rare earth slags and stabilizing Th and U

Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) has been used to cure rare earth slags (RES) containing radionuclides (e.g. Th and U) and heavy metals with favorable results. However, the role of microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in MICP curing RES remains unclear. In this study, the EPS of Lysinibacillus sphaericus K-1 was extracted for the experiments of adsorption, inducing calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation and curing of RES. The role of EPS in in MICP curing RES and stabilizing radionuclides and heavy metals was analyzed by evaluating the concentration and morphological distribution of radionuclides and heavy metals, and the compressive strength of the cured body. The results indicate that the adsorption efficiencies of EPS for Th (IV), U (VI), Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+ were 44.83%, 45.83%, 53.7%, 61.3%, 42.1%, and 77.85%, respectively. The addition of EPS solution resulted in the formation of nanoscale spherical particles on the microorganism surface, which could act as an accumulating skeleton to facilitate the formation of CaCO3. After adding 20 mL of EPS solution during the curing process (Treat group), the maximum unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the cured body reached 1.922 MPa, which was 12.13% higher than the CK group. The contents of exchangeable Th (IV) and U (VI) in the cured bodies of the Treat group decreased by 3.35% and 4.93%, respectively, compared with the CK group. Therefore, EPS enhances the effect of MICP curing RES and reduces the potential environmental problems that may be caused by radionuclides and heavy metals during the long-term sequestration of RES.

The treatment of post-processing liquid from the hydrothermal carbonization of sewage sludge

The liquid phase, being a major product of the hydrothermal carbonization of sewage sludge, is highly problematic due to numerous toxic compounds that make it impossible to dispose of without adequate purification. Therefore, this study is focused on the two groups of selected advanced methods of post-processing water derived from the hydrothermal carbonization process of sewage sludge. The first group included membrane processes, namely ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and double nanofiltration. The second included coagulation, ultrasonication and chlorination. Chemical and physical indicators were determined to confirm the validity of these treatment methods. The highest reduction values were found for double nanofiltration, which showed a spectacular decrease in the Chemical Oxygen Demand by 84.9 %, specific conductivity by 71.3 %, nitrate nitrogen by 92.4 %, phosphate phosphorus by 97.1 %, total organic carbon by 83.3 %, total carbon by 83.6 %, and inorganic carbon by 88.5 %, as compared to the liquid phase after hydrothermal carbonization. In the second group, for the largest number of parameters, the greatest reduction was achieved when 10 cm3/L of iron coagulant was added to the permeate from ultrafiltration. Additionally, COD decreased by 41 %, P-PO43- content by 78 %, phenol content by 34 %, TOC content by 97 %, TC content by 95 % and IC content by 40 %.

Advanced (bio)fouling resistant surface modification of PTFE hollow-fiber membranes for water treatment

Membrane surface treatment to modify anti-(bio)fouling resistivity plays a key role in membrane technology. This paper reports on the successful use of air-stimulated surface polymerization of dopamine hydrochloride incorporated ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) for impeding the intrinsic hydrophobicity and low anti-(bio)fouling resistivity of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow-fiber membranes (HFMs). The study involved the use of pristine and polydopamine (Pdopa) coated PTFE HFMs, both with and without the presence of an air supply and added ZnO NPs. Zeta potential measurements were performed to evaluate the dispersion stability of ZnO NPs prior to immobilization, while morphological characterization and time-dependency of the Pdopa growth layer were illustrated through scanning electron microscopy. Pdopa surface polymerization and ZnO NPs immobilization were confirmed using FT-IR and EDX spectroscopy. Transformation of the PTFE HFM surface features to superhydrophilic was demonstrated through water contact angle analysis and the stability of immobilized ZnO NPs assessed by ICP analysis. Anti-fouling criteria and (bio)fouling resistivity performance of the surface-modified membranes were assessed through flux recovery determination of bovine serum albumin in dead-end filtration as well as dynamic-contact-condition microbial evaluation against Staphylococcus spp. and Escherichia coli, respectively. The filtration recovery ratio and antimicrobial results suggested promising surface modification impacts on the anti-fouling properties of PTFE HFM. As such, the method represents the first successful use of air-stimulated Pdopa coating incorporating ZnO NPs to induce superhydrophilic PTFE HFM surface modification. Such a method can be extended to the other membranes associated with water treatment processes.

Bio-fabricated bismuth-based materials for removal of emerging environmental contaminants from wastewater

Although rapid industrialization has made life easier for humans, several associated issues are emerging and harming the environment. Wastewater is regarded as one of the key problems of the 21st century due to its massive production every year and requires immediate attention from all stakeholders to protect the environment. Since the introduction of nanotechnology, bismuth-based nanomaterials have been used in variety of applications. Various techniques, such as hydrothermal, solvo-thermal and biosynthesis, have been reported for synthesizing these materials, etc. Among these, biosynthesis is eco-friendly, cost-effective, and less toxic than conventional chemical methods. The prime focuses of this review are to elaborate biosynthesis of bismuth-based nanomaterials via bio-synthetic agents such as plant, bacteria and fungi and their application in wastewater treatment as anti-pathogen/photocatalyst for pollutant degradation. Besides this, future perspectives have been presented for the upcoming research in this field, along with concluding remarks.

Improved feed forward with bald eagle search for conjunctive water management in deficit region

Due to increasing requirements on water resources and a lower recharge rate, the farming seasons are a vital season for the management of groundwater and surface water resource management. This condition necessitates the use of combined water distribution to meet the full water requirements. Analysis of existing surface water resources and related restrictions, this research suggested an algorithm for aquifer stabilization and fulfilling optimum water requirements. To manage the optimum withdrawals and the subsequent drop, this technique first employed the MODFLOW model for simulating the water levels. Next, an improved feed-forward neural network (IFFNN) was combined with an optimization method to create a machine learning (ML) framework. During the last phase, the findings of the optimized connectives approach as well as the relevant fields technologies to determine using improved bald eagle search with least square SVM(IBES-LSSVM) method that predicted the level of water deficit for every period, especially during farming seasons. This approach is based on an improved bald eagle search (IBES) optimization technique for finding the best settings for a least-squares support vector machine (LSSVM). The findings revealed that between 2005 and 2020, the year with the biggest water deficit was 2018 when only roughly 64 percent of water need was satisfied by groundwater (69 percent) and surface water (64 percent) (33 percent). The water depth may have risen by around 0.7 m during the study period if the optimum model had been used. The outcome of this research will help the management forecast future water shortages and make smarter water strategic choices.

Improved neural network with least square support vector machine for wastewater treatment process

This research offers a unique interval by using the predicting approach for discharge indicators of water quality data such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N). This is considered one of the significant quality metrics in wastewater treatment plants for water quality management as well as surveillance. To begin, the effluent information for BOD/NH3-N and their supplementary parameters are gathered. Hence BOD and NH3 are considered major feature sources for estimating water pollutants. BOD is high then oxygen level is very low in the water due to pollutants or algae. Ammonia nitrogen is an organic waste component in water from sewage. The significant characteristics with good correlation levels of BOD and NH3-N are examined and identified using a grey correlation analysis method after certain basic data pre-processing procedures. The BOD/NH3-N effluent information of a water treatment plant is predicted using an upgraded feed-forward neural network with the least square support vector machine (FFNN-LSSVM) method. An optimization approach for an enhanced feed-forward neural network (IFFNN) is built by Machine Learning Algorithms. The IFFNN used regular influent water quality, influent rate of flow, and Wastewater performance monitoring and operational conditions as input parameters. For future prediction, input variables were previous different wastewater quality measurements. Lastly, the analysis shows that, when compared to other current algorithms, the proposed methodology can forecast wastewater quality of water with high accuracy in predicting BOD and NH3 levels, limited computation duration, mean error less than 10% and R² is 90% proves better than existing techniques.

Insights into the Synergistic Removal of Copper(II), Cadmium(II), and Chromium(III) Ions Using Modified Chitosan Based on Schiff Bases-g-poly(acrylonitrile)

Chitosan has received broad consideration as an adsorbent for all pollutants because of its low cost and great adsorption potential. However, its shortcomings, including sensitivity to pH, poor thermal stability, and poor mechanical strength, limit its use. The functional groups of chitosan can be modified to enhance its performance by the grafting technique and Schiff base modification. The grafting process used acrylonitrile (Ch-g-PAN) as a monomer and potassium persulfate as an initiator. After that, the modification via preparation of the Schiff base reaction using salicylaldehyde (Ch-g-Sch I) and P-anisaldehyde (Ch-g-Sch II) was carried out. The synthesized copolymers were detailed and characterized through several spectroscopic and microscopic techniques including infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. In addition, Ch-g-Sch I and Ch-g-Sch II were applied in the removal of different metal ions such as Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Cr³⁺. The maximum adsorption capacity of Ch-g-Sch I for Cd²⁺ was 183.7 mg g^-1 in 24 h, while in the case of Ch-g-Sch II, the maximum adsorption capacity for Cd²⁺ was improved to 322.9 mg g^-1 for the same time. Moreover, adsorption thermodynamic analysis displays that the all ion adsorption process was not random and the pseudo-second-order model fitted with experimental results. Finally, Ch-g-Sch I and Ch-g-Sch II were applied as designs for industrial wastewater treatment with significant efficiency.

Strategies to improve membrane performance in wastewater treatment

Membrane technology has rapidly gained popularity in wastewater treatment due to its cost-effectiveness, environmentally friendly tools, and elevated productivity. Although membrane performance in wastewater treatment has been reviewed in several past studies, the key techniques for improving membrane performance, as well as their challenges, and solutions associated with the membrane process, were not sufficiently highlighted in those studies. Also, very few studies have addressed hybrid techniques to improve membrane performance. The present review aims to fill those gaps and achieve public health benefits through safe water processing. Despite its higher cost, membrane performance can result in a 36% reduction in flux degradation. The issue with fouling has been identified as one of the key challenges of membrane technology. Chemical cleaning is quite effective in removing accumulated foulant. Fouling mitigation techniques have also been shown to have a positive effect on membrane photobioreactors that handle wastewater effluent, resulting in a 50% and 60% reduction in fouling rates for backwash and nitrogen bubble scouring techniques. Membrane hybrid approaches such as hybrid forward-reverse osmosis show promise in removing high concentrations of phosphorus, ammonium, and salt from wastewater. The incorporation of the forward osmosis process can reject 99% of phosphorus and 97% of ammonium, and the reverse osmosis approach can achieve a 99% salt rejection rate. The control strategies for membrane fouling have not been successfully optimized yet and more research is needed to achieve a realistic, long-term direct membrane filtering operation.

Removal of dye pollution by an oxidase derived from mutagenesis of the Deuteromycete Myrothecium with high potential in industrial applications

It is estimated that over 700,000 tons of synthetic dyes are produced annually, 15% of which are emitted as effluents. These highly stable dyes enter the world water ecosystems and stay in the environment, and eventually cause adverse impacts to the environment. Current wastewater treatment methods, such as filtration, coagulation, and chemical oxidation, have sideeffects, including toxic residue formation, membrane fouling, bioaccumulation, and secondary pollutant formation. Given the issues mentioned, it is necessary to study how to improve the degradation of synthetic dye with a cost-effective and ecofriendly approach. Natural oxidation provides a greener option. Recently, Deuteromycetes fungus Myrothecium verrucaria G-1 (M. verrucaria G-1) has shown great potential in producing high level of dye oxidase. This study aims to generate a dye oxidase hyperproducer, 3H6 from M. verrucaria G-1 by using atmospheric and room temperature plasma (ARTP) coupled with ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. This method increases oxidase production by nearly 106.15%. After a simple precipitation and dialysis, this mutant oxidase increases by 1.97-fold in a specific activity with dye degradation rates at 70% for Mmethylene blue (MB) and 85% for Congo red (CR). It is found that the genetic stability of 3H6 remains active for ten generations. The size of oxidase is 65 kDa, and optimum temperature for reaction is 30 °C with 4.5 pH. This study presents that the first combined mutagenesis approach by ARPT-UV on fungus species generates an impressive increment of acid dye oxidases production. As such, this method presents a cost-effective alternative to mitigate hazardous dye pollution.

Lignosulfonate valorization into a Cu-containing magnetically recyclable photocatalyst for treating wastewater pollutants in aqueous media

This study presents an eco-friendly and economical process for preparing a magnetic copper complex conjugated to modified calcium lignosulfonate (LS) through a diamine (Fe₃O₄@LS@naphthalene-1,5-diamine@copper complex; FLN-Cu) as a green and novel catalyst. The prepared catalyst was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), elemental mapping, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) techniques. The photocatalytic performance of the synthesized FLN-Cu catalyst was investigated by the degradation of aqueous solutions of dyes such as Rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), and Congo red (CR) under UV irradiation. The dye degradation was followed by UV-Vis (ultraviolet-visible) spectrophotometry by measuring the changes in absorbance. The effects of different factors such as pH, contact time, photocatalyst dosage, and initial concentration of dye on the adsorption percentage were also investigated. Moreover, the catalyst showed high stability and could be readily separated from the reaction media using a magnet and reused five times without a remarkable loss of catalytic ability.

Comprehensive Review on Zeolite-Based Nanocomposites for Treatment of Effluents from Wastewater

All humans and animals need access to clean water in their daily lives. Unfortunately, we are facing water scarcity in several places around the world, and, intentionally or unintentionally, we are contaminating the water in a number of ways. The rise in population, globalization, and industrialization has simultaneously given rise to the generation of wastewater. The pollutants in wastewater, such as organic contaminants, heavy metals, agrochemicals, radioactive pollutants, etc., can cause various ailments as well as environmental damage. In addition to the existing pollutants, a number of new pollutants are now being produced by developing industries. To address this issue, we require some emerging tools and materials to remove effluents from wastewater. Zeolites are the porous aluminosilicates that have been used for the effective pollutant removal for a long time owing to their extraordinary adsorption and ion-exchange properties, which make them available for the removal of a variety of contaminants. However, zeolite alone shows much less photocatalytic efficiency, therefore, different photoactive materials are being doped with zeolites to enhance their photocatalytic efficiency. The fabrication of zeolite-based composites is emerging due to their powerful results as adsorbents, ion-exchangers, and additional benefits as good photocatalysts. This review highlights the types, synthesis and removal mechanisms of zeolite-based materials for wastewater treatment with the basic knowledge about zeolites and wastewater along with the research gaps, which gives a quality background of worldwide research on this topic for future developments.

New highly efficient 2D/1D HAp/g‒C3N4 photocatalyst thin film insight into crystal orientation and C‒vacancy effects

The novel synthetic Sol‒EPD process of a thin film including of well decorated g‒C₃N₄ nanotubes on plate‒like hydroxyapatite (HAp) were applied. Using Sol‒EPD designable method anisotropic growth of HAp nanocrystals on the substrate were achieved. It has provided the orientation of the different crystal facets resulted in the photogenerated O‒vacancy from phosphate groups. Based on the studied XRD pattern, EPD deposited film of HAp was oriented along c‒plane that can improve the photocatalytic activity of the designed composited film. Systematic designing was applied for decoration of g‒C₃N₄ nanotubes on the HAp under thermal condensation of melamine coincide with calcination of HAp. This new designed HAp/g‒C₃N₄ nanofilm was shown high photocatalytic efficiency and completely degradation of persistent pollutant of 4‒nitrophenol in the aqueous solution. According to the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and current density studies, the higher charge separation/low charge recombination results were obtained for composited g‒C₃N₄/HAp nano‒film comparing with the single films of HAp and urchin like g‒C₃N₄. This high separation of charge pairs should be also assigned to the special designed morphology. In addition, wrapped like structure of g‒C₃N₄ nanotubes with C‒vacancy around HAp nanoplates play key role in separation of photo‒induced charge pairs, light diffusion, and high light harvesting within hollow nanotube. It can be highlighted that the composite degraded more than 95% of 4‒nitrophenol during 90 min that after 5 runs the photocatalytic activity was not significantly changed.

Optimization of dyes and toxic metals removal from environmental water samples by clinoptilolite zeolite using response surface methodology approach

The present study aimed to remove crystal violet (CV), malachite green (MG), Cd(II), and Pb(II) from an aqueous solution using clinoptilolite zeolite (CZ) as an adsorbent. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD) was used to analyze and optimize the process parameters, such as pH, analyte concentration, adsorbent amount, and sonication time. Quadratic models with the coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.99 (p < 0.0001) were compared statistically. The results revealed that the selected models have good precision and a good agreement between the predicted and experimental data. The maximum removal of contaminants was achieved under optimum conditions of pH = 6, sonication time of 22 min, the adsorbent amount of 0.19 g, and analyte concentration of 10 mg L⁻¹. The reusability test of the adsorbent showed that the CZ adsorbent could be used 5 times in water and wastewater treatment processes. According to the results of interference studies, the presence of different ions, even at high concentrations, does not interfere with the removal of contaminants. Applying the CZ adsorbent on environmental water samples revealed that CZ adsorbent could remove CV, MG, Cd(II), and Pb(II) in the range of 84.54% to 99.38% and contaminants present in industrial effluents. As a result, the optimized method in this study can be widely used with high efficiency for removing CV, MG, Cd(II), and Pb(II) from water and wastewater samples.

Simultaneous Removal of SO2 and NO by O3 Oxidation Combined with Seawater as Absorbent

Aiming at NOx (NO 90%, NO2 10%) and SO2 in simulated vessel emissions, denitration and desulfurization were studied through ozone oxidation combined with seawater as absorbent. Specifically, the different influencing factors of denitration and desulfurization were analyzed. The results indicated that the oxidation efficiency of NO can reach over 90% when the molar ratio of O3/NO is 1.2. Ozone oxidation and seawater washing in the same unit can decrease the temperature of ozone oxidation of NO, avoid high temperature ozone decomposition, and enhance the oxidation efficiency of NO. When NO inlet initial concentration is lower than 800 ppm, the NOx removal efficiency can be improved by increasing NO inlet concentration, and when NO inlet initial concentration is greater than 800 ppm, increasing the concentration of NO would decrease the NOx removal efficiency. Increasing the inlet concentration of SO2 has minor effect on desulfurization, but slightly reduces the absorption efficiency of NOx due to the competition of SO2 and NOx in the absorption solution. Besides, final products (NO2−, NO3−, SO32−, and SO42−) were analyzed by the ion chromatography.

Experimental and modeling analyses of COD removal from industrial wastewater using the TiO2-chitosan nanocomposites

In the present study, titanium oxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles, chitosan, and several nanocomposites containing different mass dosages of TiO₂ and chitosan have been applied as the adsorbent for COD removal from the industrial wastewater (Bouali Sina Petrochemical Company, Iran). The FESEM, XRD, and FTIR tests have been employed to characterize TiO₂ nanoparticles, chitosan, and fabricated nanocomposites. Then, the effect of adsorption parameters, including TiO₂–chitosan mass ratio (1:1, 1:2, and 2:1), adsorbent content (0.25–2.5 g), temperature (20–50 °C), pH (3–11), solution volume (100–500 mL), and contact time (30–180 min) on the COD reduction has also been monitored both experimentally and numerically. The Box–Behnken design of the experiment approves that TiO₂–chitosan (1:1), adsorbent content of 2.5 g, temperature = 20 °C, pH 7.4, solution volume of 100 mL, and contact time = 180 min are the condition that maximizes the COD removal (i.e., 94.5%). Moreover, the Redlich–Peterson and Pseudo-second order models are the best isotherm and kinetic scenarios to describe COD removal’s transient and equilibrium behaviors. The maximum monolayer COD adsorption capacity of the TiO₂–chitosan nanocomposite is 89.5 mg g⁻¹. The results revealed that the industrial wastewater COD is better to remove using the TiO₂–chitosan (1:1) at temperature = 20 °C.

Performance Comparison of EGSB and IC Reactors for Treating High-Salt Fatty Acid Organic Production Wastewater

This study used the EGSB and IC reactors to treat the high-salt and high-concentration organic wastewater (high-salt fatty acid production wastewater) and compared their performances The experimental results showed that the optimal influent water quality thresholds for both bioreactors to treat this wastewater were a COD concentration of 18,000 mg/L and a sulfate ion concentration of about 8000 mg/L. The reactor operated well when C/S was greater than 2.8. In addition, the value of C/S should not be less than 1.5. This is due to that under this condition, the sulfate reduction process has a significant impact on the removal of COD, and MPB may be inhibited by sulfides. The organic load OLR should not be greater than 10 kgCOD/(m3·d). It was also found that the start-up time of the IC reactor with external circulation was slightly shorter, and the COD removal effect, gas production rate, and load tolerance were slightly better than those of the EGSB reactor, the best reflux ratio of the two reactors was 6:1. The appropriate rising flow rate was 0.4 m/h.

Electrochemical monitoring sensors of water pollution systems

Analytical techniques as strong, precise, and expensive are necessary for monitoring food and water safety for contaminants, microorganisms, and allergies that might be harmful if used. Sudan dyes are commonly utilized as an ingredient in food dye substances and a variety of industrial items. These colors are classified as three carcinogens and are linked to liver and bladder cancers. They are not authorized for human consumption by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and are not permitted to be used by the Food Standards Agency or the European Union. This article describes electrochemical dye analysis beside the numerous electrochemical sensors utilized to identify these dyes as a food colorant and water. As a result, the qualities, chemistry, and toxicity of dyes as food colorants and industrial goods in Sudan have been investigated in this study. Sudan dyes have been thoroughly studied, and many electrochemical sensors have been developed to define and monitor these dyes in food colorants. As a result, current electrochemical sensors have been found to be neither mass-production nor cost-effective. Mostly, the synthesis of high-performance materials needs high knowledge, and the production of electrode surfaces is remained difficult due to labor-intensive and time-consuming activities.

Mesoporous Nano-Sized BiFeVOx.y Phases for Removal of Organic Dyes from Wastewaters by Visible Light Photocatalytic Degradation

With an increasing demand for industrial dyes in our daily lives, water conditions have become worse. Recently, the removal of such environmentally hazardous pollutants from wastewaters through photocatalytic degradation has been drawing increased attention. Three mesoporous nanophases of BiFeVOx.y as (Bi₂Fe^IIIV_1−yO_5.5−y) visible light photocatalysts were synthesized in this study using ethylene glycol-citrate sol-gel synthesis combined with microwave- assisted calcination. X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry (UV-Vis/DRS) were used to characterize the BiFeVOx.y photocatalysts. The visible light-induced photocatalytic activities of the BiFeVOx.y phases were evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye in aqueous solution at pH ~10.0. The results of this study show that the combination of doping strategy with the utilization of advanced synthesis methods plays an important role in improving the structure and surface properties of BiFeVOx.y phases, and thereby enhancing their adsorption and photocatalytic efficiencies. The synthesized mesoporous tetragonal γ-BiFeVOx.y nanophase has been proven to be a potential visible-light photocatalyst for the degradation of organic dyes.

Ultrasonic-assisted synthesis of zeolite/activated carbon@MnO2 composite as a novel adsorbent for treatment of wastewater containing methylene blue and brilliant blue

In this study, zeolite/activated carbon@MnO₂ composite was used as a novel adsorbent to eliminate methylene blue (MB) and brilliant blue (BB) dyes from aqueous media. To this end, activated carbon (AC) was produced by Ziziphus Spina-Christi leaves and then used to synthesize zeolite/AC@MnO₂ composite. Various analyses such as BET, SEM, EDX, Map, FTIR, and XRD were performed to determine the surface features of the above composite. BET analysis indicated that the aforementioned composite has a mesoporous structure. Also, the best conditions for the adsorption of MB and BB dyes were obtained at pH of 9 and 2, temperature of 25 °C, adsorbent dosage of 1 and 2 g/L, initial dye concentration of 10 mg/L, and contact time of 40 and 60 min, respectively. Under optimal conditions, the utmost removal efficiency of MB and BB dyes using the zeolite/AC@MnO₂ composite was 98.43% and 96.54%, respectively, indicating significant adsorption efficiencies. Moreover, the utmost adsorption capacity of MB and BB dyes was 67.56 and 66.22 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, intraparticle and film diffusion mechanisms were very important in the adsorption process. Besides, thermodynamic and equilibrium studies indicated that the adsorption process is exothermic, physical, and spontaneous. Generally, the aforementioned composite has a significant adsorption capacity and can be a suitable adsorbent to eliminate cationic dyes from industrial effluents.

Study on Fiber Clogging Mechanism in Sewage Pump Based on CFD–DEM Simulation

A large number of solid particles and fibrous impurities are always entrained in the fluid transported by a sewage pump, which can easily lead to the blockage of the sewage pump. In view of this, CFD–DEM simulations were conducted in this paper to reveal the fiber clogging mechanism in the sewage pump. A CFD–DEM coupling method with a fiber model was established and verified by an experimental benchmark, i.e., the rectangular flow channel. The method was then applied to a model sewage pump to, after mesh independence tests, analyze the effects of flow rate and fiber length on fiber motion and clogging. The results showed that the position of fiber retention coincides with the position of the vortex, mainly located at the inlet of the impeller, the head of the blade, the middle of the blade, and the tongue in the pump. In the case of a low flow rate, the fiber was more likely to cause blockage in the head of the blade, and in the case of a large flow rate, the fiber would wind around the tongue in the pump. At the same flow rate, long fiber was more likely to stay on the blade’s suction surface.
