Degradation of 4-nonylphenol in marine sediments using calcium peroxide activated by water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes)-derived biochar

Unravelling the genomic and environmental diversity of the ubiquitous Solirubrobacter

Solirubrobacter, though widespread in soils and rhizospheres, has been relatively unexplored despite its ubiquity. Previously acknowledged as a common soil bacterium, our research explores its phylogenomics, pangenomics, environmental diversity, and interactions within bacterial communities. By analysing seven genomic sequences, we have identified a pangenome consisting of 19,645 protein families, of which 2644 are shared across all studied genomes, forming the core genome. Interestingly, despite the non-motility of reported isolates, we discovered genes for flagellin and a partial flagellum assembly pathway. Examining the 16S ribosomal RNA genes of Solirubrobacter revealed substantial diversity, with 3166 operational taxonomic units identified in Mexican soils. Co-occurrence network analysis further demonstrated its significant integration within bacterial communities. Through phylogenomic scrutiny, we conclusively excluded the NCBI's GCA_009993245.1 genome from being classified as a Solirubrobacter. Our research into the metagenomic diversity of Solirubrobacter across various environments confirmed its presence in rhizospheres and certain soils, underscoring its adaptability. The geographical ubiquity of Solirubrobacter in rhizospheres raises intriguing questions regarding its potential interactions with plant hosts and the biotic and abiotic factors influencing its presence in soil. Given its ecological significance and genetic diversity, Solirubrobacter warrants further investigation as a potentially crucial yet underappreciated keystone species.

Phytoremediation of contaminated sediment combined with biochar: Feasibility, challenges and perspectives

The accumulation of contaminants in sediments is accelerated by human activities and poses a major threat to ecosystems and human health. In recent years, various remediation techniques have been developed for contaminated sediments. In this review, a bibliometric analysis of papers on sediment remediation indexed in the WOS database between 2009 and 2023 was conducted using VOSviewer. We describe the development of biochar and plants for sediment contaminant removal. However, the single processes of biochar remediation and phytoremediation can be impeded by (i) low efficiency, (ii) poor tolerance of plants towards pollutants, (iii) difficulty in biochar to degrade pollutants, and (iv) biochar aging causing secondary pollution. Fortunately, combination remediation, realized through the combination of biochar and plants, can overcome the shortcomings of their individual applications. Therefore, we suggest that the remediation of contaminants in sediments can be accomplished by combining biochar with macrophytes and considering multiple limiting factors. Here, we explore the challenges that co-remediation with biochar and macrophytes will face in achieving efficient and sustainable sediment remediation, including complex sediment environments, interaction mechanisms of biochar-macrophyte-microorganisms, emerging pollutants, and integrated life cycle assessments, which can provide references for combined biochar and plant remediation of sediments in the future.

Zinc and sulfur functionalized biochar as a peroxydisulfate activator via deferred ultraviolet irradiation for tetracycline removal

To enhance the degradation of tetracycline class (TC) residuals of high-concentration from pharmaceutical wastewater, a novel zinc (Zn) and sulfur (S) functionalized biochar (SC-Zn), as a peroxydisulfate (PDS) activator, was prepared by two-step pyrolysis using ZnSO4 accumulated water-hyacinth. Results showed that the removal rate of 50, 150, and 250 mg per L TC reached 100%, 99.22% and 94.83% respectively, by the SC-Zn/PDS system at a dosage of 0.3 g per L SC-Zn and 1.2 mM PDS, via the deferred ultraviolet (UV) irradiation design. Such excellent performance for TC removal was due to the synergetic activation of PDS by the biochar activator and UV-irradiation with biochar as a responsive photocatalyst. The functionalization of the co-doped Zn and S endowed the biochar SC-Zn with a significantly enhanced catalytic performance, since Zn was inferred to be the dominant catalytic site for SO4˙- generation, while S played a key role in the synergism with Zn by acting as the primary adsorption site for the reaction substrates. The employed SC-Zn/PDS/UV system had excellent anti-interference under different environmental backgrounds, and compared with the removal rate of TC by adsorption of SC-Zn, the increasing rate in the SC-Zn/PDS/UV system (18.75%) was higher than the sum of the increases in the SC-Zn/PDS (9.87%) and SC-Zn/UV systems (3.34%), furtherly verifying the systematic superiority of this synergy effect. This study aimed to prepare a high-performance functionalized biochar activator and elucidate the rational design of deferred UV-irradiation of PDS activation to efficiently remove high-concentration antibiotic pollutants.

Efficient Adsorption of Tebuconazole in Aqueous Solution by Calcium Modified Water Hyacinth-Based Biochar: Adsorption Kinetics, Mechanism, and Feasibility

The application of fungicides (such as tebuconazole) can impose harmful impacts on the ecosystem and humans. In this study, a new calcium modified water hyacinth-based biochar (WHCBC) was prepared and its effectiveness for removing tebuconazole (TE) via adsorption from water was tested. The results showed that Ca was loaded chemically (CaC₂O₄) onto the surface of WHCBC. The adsorption capacity of the modified biochar increased by 2.5 times in comparison to that of the unmodified water hyacinth biochar. The enhanced adsorption was attributed to the improved chemical adsorption capacity of the biochar through calcium modification. The adsorption data were better fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the adsorption process was dominated by monolayer adsorption. It was found that liquid film diffusion was the main rate-limiting step in the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity of WHCBC was 40.5 mg/g for TE. The results indicate that the absorption mechanisms involved surface complexation, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions. The inhibitory rate of Cu²⁺ and Ca²⁺ on the adsorption of TE by WHCBC were at 4.05-22.8%. In contrast, the presence of other coexisting cations (Cr⁶⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Pb²⁺), as well as natural organic matter (humic acid), could promote the adsorption of TE by 4.45-20.9%. In addition, the regeneration rate of WHCBC was able to reach up to 83.3% after five regeneration cycles by desorption stirring with 0.2 mol/L HCl (t = 360 min). The results suggest that WHCBC has a potential in application for removing TE from water.

Activation of calcium peroxide by nitrogen and sulfur co-doped metal-free lignin biochar for enhancing the removal of emerging organic contaminants from waste activated sludge

The accumulation of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in waste activated sludge (WAS) is a global concern. In this study, a multi-heteroatom nitrogen and sulfur was successfully embedded into lignin-based biochar (N-S-LGBC) and used it to activate calcium peroxide (CP) for the degradation of 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) in WAS. N-S-LGBC/CP was effective in degrading 85 % of 4-NP within 12 h through the activation of CP owing to hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen species generated from the synergism among pyrrolic-N, thiophenic-S, and lattice oxygen, i.e., active sites responsible for 4-NP degradation. These results highlight substrate biodegradability for subsequent bioprocesses that improves WAS treatment in EOC degradation by the N-S-LGBC/CP-mediated process. There was abundance of distinct Aggregatilinea genus within the phylum Chloroflexi during N-S-LGBC/CP treatment, indicating high 4-NP pretreatment efficiency in WAS. This work provides a new understanding of N-S-co-doped carbocatalysts in green and sustainable hydroxyl radical-driven carbon advanced oxidation (HR-CAOP) platforms for WAS remediation.

One of the most significant environmental problems in the world is the massive release of dye wastewater from the dyeing industry. Therefore, the treatment of dyes effluents has received significant attention from researchers in recent years. Calcium peroxide (CP) from the group of alkaline earth metal peroxides acts as an oxidizing agent for the degradation of organic dyes in water. It is known that the commercially available CP has a relatively large particle size, which makes the reaction rate for pollution degradation relatively slow. Therefore, in this study, starch, a non-toxic, biodegradable and biocompatible biopolymer, was used as a stabilizer for synthesizing calcium peroxide nanoparticles (Starch@CPnps). The Starch@CPnps were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET), dynamic light scattering (DLS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The degradation of organic dyes, methylene blue (MB), using Starch@CPnps as a novel oxidant was studied using three different parameters: initial pH of the MB solution, calcium peroxide initial dosage and contact time. The degradation of the MB dye was carried out via a Fenton reaction, and the degradation efficiency of Starch@CPnps was successfully achieved up to 99%. This study shows that the potential application of starch as a stabilizer can reduce the size of the nanoparticles as it prevents the agglomeration of the nanoparticles during synthesis.

An integrated biorefinery approach for the valorization of water hyacinth towards circular bioeconomy: a review

Water hyacinth (WH) has become a considerable concern for people across the globe due to its environmental and socio-economic hazards. Researchers are still trying to control this aquatic weed effectively without other environmental or economic losses. Research on WH focuses on converting this omnipresent excessive biomass into value-added products. The potential use of WH for phytoremediation and utilizing waste biomass in various industries, including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and bioenergy, has piqued interest. The use of waste WH biomass as a feedstock for producing bioenergy and value-added chemicals has emerged as an eco-friendly step towards the circular economy concept. Here, we have discussed the extraction of bio-actives and cellulose as primary bioproducts, followed by a detailed discussion on different biomass conversion routes to obtain secondary bioproducts. The suggested multi-objective approach will lead to cost-effective and efficient utilization of waste WH biomass. Additionally, the present review includes a discussion of the SWOT analysis for WH biomass and the scope for future studies. An integrated biorefinery scheme is proposed for the holistic utilization of this feedstock in a cascading manner to promote the sustainable and zero-waste circular bio-economy concept.

Nitrogen and boron co-doped lignin biochar for enhancing calcium peroxide activation toward organic micropollutants decontamination in waste activated sludge and related microbial structure dynamics

This study synthesized dual heteroatom nitrogen and boron-co-doped lignin-based biochar (NB-LGBC) for calcium peroxide (CP) activation to enhance the removal of organic micropollutants (OMPs), namely, 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) from waste activated sludge (WAS). NB-LGBC/CP enhanced 4-NP degradation by arriving at 83 % removal in 12 h. The NB-LGBC/CP system degraded 4-NP via a synergistic interaction (HO•, O₂^•- radicals, and singlet oxygen) and electron transfer due to the N-B-C bonding configurations. Results of fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (FEEM) analysis revealed significantly increase in biodegradable organics from treated WAS mixture. NB-LGBC/CP treatment enriched alkaliphilic bacterium associated with the predominance of the genus Desulfonatronum within the phylum Proteobacteria in the WAS, which improved the biological treatment capacity of 4-NP. Thus, NB-LGBC in HR-CAOP will be a novel approach for WAS decontamination.

The remediation of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate-contaminated sediments by water hyacinth biochar activation of calcium peroxide and its effect on cytotoxicity

The presence of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in the aquatic systems, specifically marine sediments has attracted considerable attention worldwide, as it enters the food chain and adversely affects the aquatic environment and subsequently human health. This study reports an efficient carbocatalytic activation of calcium peroxide (CP) using water hyacinth biochar (WHBC) toward the efficient remediation of DEHP-contaminated sediments and offer insights into biochar-mediated cellular cytotoxicity, using a combination of chemical and bioanalytical methods. The pyrolysis temperature (300-900 °C) for WHBC preparation significantly controlled catalytic capacity. Under the experimental conditions studied, the carbocatalyst exhibited 94% of DEHP removal. Singlet oxygen (¹O₂), the major active species in the WHBC/CP system and electron-rich carbonyl functional groups of carbocatalyst, played crucial roles in the non-radical activation of CP. Furthermore, cellular toxicity evaluation indicated lower cytotoxicity in hepatocarcinoma cells (HepG2) after exposure to WHBC (25-1000 μg mL^-1) for 24 h and that WHBC induced cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase. Findings clearly indicated the feasibility of the WHBC/CP process for the restoration of contaminated sediment and contributing to understanding the mechanisms of cytotoxic effects and apoptotic of carbocatalyst on HepG2.

The Multifaceted Function of Water Hyacinth in Maintaining Environmental Sustainability and the Underlying Mechanisms: A Mini Review

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) (WH) is a widespread aquatic plant. As a top invasive macrophyte, WH causes enormous economic and ecological losses. To control it, various physical, chemical and biological methods have been developed. However, multiple drawbacks of these methods limited their application. While being a noxious macrophyte, WH has great potential in many areas, such as phytoremediation, manufacture of value-added products, and so on. Resource utilization of WH has enormous benefits and therefore, is a sustainable strategy for its control. In accordance with the increasing urgency of maintaining environmental sustainability, this review concisely introduced up to date WH utilization specifically in pollution remediation and curbing the global warming crisis and discussed the underlying mechanisms.

Grafting with an invasive Xanthium strumarium improves tolerance and phytoremediation of native congener X. sibiricum to cadmium/copper/nickel tailings

Invasive plants could play an important role in the restoration of tailings, but their invasiveness limits their practical application. In this study, the phytoremediation potentials and invasive risks of an exotic invasive plant (Xanthium strumarium, LT), a native plant (X. sibiricum, CR), and combinations of inoculations (EG, with CR as the scion and LT as the rootstock; SG, with CR as both the scion and rootstock) were evaluated on Cd/Cu/Ni tailings. LT rootstock has a stronger nutrient and metal transport capacity, compared with CR. EG not only had higher biomass and Cd/Cu/Ni accumulation, but also abundant rhizosphere microbial communities. Hydroponic and common garden experiments showed that the growth and metal enrichment characteristics of EG are not inherited by plant offspring, which reduces the risk of the biological diffusion in the process of using exotic species. Transcriptome analysis shows that a large number of differentially-expressed genes in EG leaves and roots are involved in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, secondary metabolite generation, and signal transduction. The genes induced in EG leaves, including cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channel, calcium-binding protein, and WRKY transcription factor, were found to be differentially expressed compared to CR. The genes induced in EG roots, included phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, cinnamoyl-CoA reductase, caffeoyl-CoA O-methyltransferase, and beta-glucosidase. We speculate that lignin and glucosinolates play an important role in the metal accumulation and transportation of EG. The results demonstrate that grafting with LT not only improved CR tolerance and accumulation of Cd, Cu, and Ni, but also created a beneficial microbial environment for plants in tailings. More importantly, grafting with LT did not enhance the invasiveness of CR. Our results provide an example of the safe use of invasive plants in the restoration of Cd/Cu/Ni tailings.

Metal-free single heteroatom (N, O, and B)-doped coconut-shell biochar for enhancing the degradation of sulfathiazole antibiotics by peroxymonosulfate and its effects on bacterial community dynamics

Metal-free single heteroatom (N, O, and B)-doped coconut-shell biochar (denoted as N-CSBC, O-CSBC, and B-CSBC, respectively) were fabricated in a one-step pyrolysis process to promote peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for the elimination of sulfathiazole (STZ) from aquaculture water. B-CSBC exhibited remarkably high catalytic activity with 92% of STZ degradation in 30 min attributed to the presence of meso-/micro-pores and B-containing functional groups (including B-N, B-C, and B₂O₃ species). Radical quenching tests revealed SO₄^•-, HO•, and ¹O₂ being the major electron acceptors contributing to STZ removal by PMS over B-CSBC catalyst. The B-CSBC catalyst has demonstrated high sustainability in multiple consecutive treatment cycles. High salinity and the presence of inorganic ions such as chloride, enhanced the performance of the sulfate radical-carbon-driven advanced oxidation processes (SR-CAOPs) as pretreatment strategy that significantly facilitated the removal of STZ from aquaculture water. Furthermore, a potential sulfonamide-degrading microorganism, Cylindrospermum_stagnale, belonging to the phylum Cyanobacteria, was the dominant functional bacteria according to the results of high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing conducted after the B-CSBC/PMS treatment. This study provides new insights into the SR-CAOP combined with bioprocesses for removing STZ from aqueous environments.

Bioremediation pretreatment of waste-activated sludge using microalgae Spirulina platensis derived biochar coupled with sodium sulfite: Performance and microbial community dynamics

4-Nonylphenol is a typical endocrine-disrupting compound found in waste-activated sludge. This study evaluates the feasibility of blue-green algae (Spirulina platensis)-based biochar as a carbon-neutral material to improve sodium sulfite (S(IV))-mediated sludge purification. Blue-green algae-based biochar is an effective activator (at 500 °C and 3 × 10^-6 M) of sodium sulfite and removed 75 % of 4-nonylphenol at pH 6 using at 1.7 g/L of dosage. Possible synergistic relationships among the coexisting oxidizing species (SO₃^•-, SO₄^•-, HO•, and ¹O₂), obvious defect structure, and abundant carbonyl oxygen groups on the surface of the biochar together dived advanced oxidation process. The bacterial consortia promoted the decomposition of biologically available substrates in the biosolid mixture, which led to the enrichment of Denitratisoma, and boosted 4-nonylphenol biodegradation. This study outlines a potential carbon-neutral, cost-effective, and sustainable sludge treatment strategy using renewable blue-green algae-based biochar, aiding 4-nonylphenol biodegradation in waste-activated sludge.

Removal of 4-nonylphenol in activated sludge by peroxymonosulfate activated with sorghum distillery residue-derived biochar

The presence of 4-nonylphenol (4-NP), an endocrine disrupting chemical, waste activated sludge (WAS) or biosolids at elevated content requires effective method for 4-NP reduction in total sludge management. Herein, sorghum distillery residue-based biochar-activated peroxymonosulfate (SDRBC/PMS) system was studied as pretreatment of WAS. Results indicated 91% of 4-NP removal at pH 6.0 in the presence of 3.1 × 10^-6 M and 0.8 g L^-1 PMS and SDRBC500, individually. The synergetic effects of singlet oxygen (¹O₂) and the abundant functional sites (C = O/C-O content) of SDRBC significantly improved 4-NP degradation. The decreased fluorescent dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the sludge also enhanced the pretreatment efficiency. Moreover, the enrichment of the Nitrospira functional bacteria in the microbial community yielded the highest 4-NP degradation in the SDRBC/PMS-pretreated sludge. The SDRBC/PMS system functions mainly via nonradical-mediated oxidation pathway in pretreating WAS in particular and potentially by combined advanced oxidation and biodegradation processes for wastewater treatment in general.

Ecological responses of coral reef to polyethylene microplastics in community structure and extracellular polymeric substances

The relationships and interactions between extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and microplastics (MPs) in coral reef ecosystems were symmetrically investigated. The current study aims to investigate the responses of scleractinian coral (Goniopora columna) to exposure of model MPs, exemplified by polyethylene (PE), in the size range of 40-48 μm as affected by MPs concentration of MP in the range between 0 and 300 mg L^-1 for 14 days. The structure of EPS-associated microbial community was studied using a series of techniques including high-throughput sequencing of 16 S rRNA, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), hydrodynamic diameter, surface charge (via zeta potential), X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflectance‒Fourier transform infrared (ATR‒FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (FEEM) spectroscopy. Microbial interactions between PE-MPs and coral caused aggregation and formation of EPS matrix, which resulted in increase and decrease in the relative abundance of Donghicola (Proteobacteria phylum) and Marivita (Proteobacteria phylum) in PE-MP-associated EPS, respectively. Particle size, electrostatic interactions, and complexation with the functional groups of the EPS-based matrix affected the humification index. FEEM spectroscopy analyses suggested the presence of humic- and fulvic-like fluorophores in EPS and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in PE-MP-derived DOM. The findings provided insights into the potential environmental implications of coral-based EPS and co-existing microbial assemblages due to EPS-PE-MP-microbiome interactions throughout the dynamic PE-MP exposure process.

Suppression of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon formation during pyrolytic production of lignin-based biochar via nitrogen and boron co-doping

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are toxic byproducts of biochar production. The effects of pyrolysis atmosphere (i.e., N₂ and CO₂) and temperature (i.e., 300-900 °C) and element doping (i.e., N, B, O, and S) on the production of sixteen high priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in lignin-based biochar was investigated. N₂ atmosphere at 300 °C produced the highest total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon content (1698 ± 50 ng/g). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon formation decreased with increase in temperature (31 ± 15 ng/g at 900 °C). CO₂ atmosphere significantly decreased yield of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The effects of heteroatom doping on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon formation were investigated for the first time in the pyrolysis synthesis of lignin-based biochar. N-, B-, O, N-B-, and N-S-doping of biochar reduced polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon formation by 90, 85, 87, 97, and 89%, respectively. Results bring new insights into the role of heteroatom-doping and pyrolysis conditions in controlling polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon formation in biochars.

Performance and bacterial community dynamics of lignin-based biochar-coupled calcium peroxide pretreatment of waste-activated sludge for the removal of 4-nonylphenol

Waste activated sludge contaminated with high levels of 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) is a major environmental concern. We have synthesized lignin-based biochar (LGBC) for use as a carbocatalyst in calcium peroxide (CP)-mediated sewage sludge pretreatment. Treatment of sewage sludge with 3.1 × 10^-4 M of CP and 3.0 g L^-1 of LGBC removed 76% of 4-NP in 12 h, which were 3.8 and 2.4 times higher than that with the LGBC and CP alone, respectively. There was synergy between reactive oxygen species (HO•, O₂^•-, and ¹O₂) and graphitic frameworks of LGBC. Pretreatment using the LGBC/CP system enhanced the release of biodegradable organic xenobiotics from the sludge. LGBC/CP enriched Proteobacteria and Thermostilla bacterial consortium (Planctomycetes) in the sludge and promoted 4-NP biodegradation. This work provides new insights into the chemical and biological mechanisms by which LGBC promotes 4-NP biodegradation in waste activated sludge via hydroxyl radical-driven carbon advanced oxidation pretreatment.
