Towards attaining SDG 6: The opportunities available for capacitive deionization technology to provide clean water to the African population

How does virtual water influence the water stress pattern in Africa? A research perspective from the perspectives of production and trade

Northern Africa has become the first region in the world to exhaust its water resources, with a 40 % decrease in per capita water availability south of the Sahara over the past decade. While adjusting production structures and consumption can regulate the supply-demand dynamics of water resources, the extent of the impact of virtual water-induced pressure on both the regional and national levels in Africa remains largely understudied. Applying the standard Penman formula, this research calculates the water footprint of eight cereal crops in 54 African countries from 1990 to 2021. By integrating corresponding data on cereal trade, the study analyzes changes in virtual water stress. The findings indicate a decline in the per-unit production and consumption water footprints for African cereals. However, the continuous expansion of cultivation areas contributes to a rising water stress. In comparison to 1990, the water stress for soybeans, sorghum, rice, maize, and cassava increased by 149.72 %, 146.88 %, 133.89 %, 123.30 %, and 90.8 %, respectively, in 2021. Only barley showed a reduction in water stress by 23.22 %. The study underscores the growing interconnectedness of virtual water trade (VWT) among African nations from 1990 to 2021, leading to a more balanced trade distribution. VWT has reduced water stress by 7.65 %, 2.08 %, and 1.8 % in Western, Central, and Northern Africa, respectively, while increasing pressure in Southern and Eastern Africa by 10.51 % and 1.01 %. The flow of virtual water in Africa is most influenced by spatial proximity, primarily occurring between adjacent countries or regions. Forecasts for water stress under the five scenarios of SSPs-RCP8.5 have been conducted, revealing a continuous increase in water stress across Africa. Furthermore, analysis of the SSP2-RCP8.5 scenario indicates that by 2030 and 2040, African cereal crops are projected to face virtual water resource stress increases of 7 % and 18.76 %, respectively, compared to 2020 levels. During the same period, Sierra Leone is anticipated to experience a growth rate in virtual water stress of approximately 1903.38 %. Consequently, altering crop cultivation structures and enhancing VWT are poised to alleviate water resource pressure, promoting the scientific management of agricultural water resources in Africa.

Battling for net zero carbon: the position of governance and financial indicators

Africa, over the past years, has put various measures in place in the fight against carbon emissions. Achieving net zero carbon has caused the continent researchers to investigate various conditions required for a successful transition. Therefore, the political system cannot be left out since it plays a major role in decision-making. This study contributes to previous literature analyzing the empirical effect of financial development and governance quality on carbon emissions. The study is focused on 52 African countries with data from 1996 to 2021. Panel quantile and generalized method of moments are used for the analysis. The result indicates that financial development contributes to environmental degradation, government effectiveness, rule of law, and political stability which promote environmental pollution; however, control of corruption, renewable energy, and economic growth promote ecological sustainability. According to the aforementioned, it is crucial for governments to include financial development plans in national environmental strategies, particularly for those in African nations. Furthermore, governments should put restrictions on trade to control the trade of high-carbon technologies.

Water resource sustainable use assessment methodology and an impact factor analysis framework for SDG 6-oriented river basins: evidence from the Yellow River basin (Shaanxi section) in China

The rapid growth of developing countries has placed unprecedented pressure on water resources, severely hindering the realization of sustainable development goal 6 (SDG 6) in river basins. In this study, sustainable water resource utilization (SWRU) in the Yellow River basin (Shaanxi section) from 2005 to 2019 is evaluated through an analysis of water resource overload combined with the water footprint (WF) and the water planetary boundary (WPB) and an analysis of water resource utilization quality combined with the WF and city development index (CDI) based on the coupled coordination model. Then, the results are incorporated into the drive-pressure-state-impact-response framework to analyze the impacts of the socioeconomic system on SWRU and the feedback effect of related policies. The results show that there were obvious differences in the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of the WF in different geographical units. The WF of Guanzhong first increased and then decreased, and the WF of Northern Shaanxi grew continuously. The water deficit state is increasing. Although the coordination level between the WF and CDI in the basin increased by 500.31%, it was characterized by nonequilibrium and volatility. Compared to water resource endowment, socioeconomic development and government policies have greater impacts on SWRU; furthermore, the influencing factors demonstrate spatial variability, revealing the complexity of achieving SDG 6 in the basin. As policy implications, adaptive water resource policies should be formulated on the basis of strengthening the overall basin management. This study provides a scientific basis for promoting the realization of SDG 6 through watershed water management.

A Comparison of Capacitive Deionization and Membrane Capacitive Deionization Using Novel Fabricated Ion Exchange Membranes

Another technique for desalination, known as membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI), has been investigated as an alternative. This approach has the potential to lower the voltage that is required, in addition to improving the ability to renew the electrodes. In this study, the desalination effectiveness of capacitive deionization (CDI) was compared to that of MCDI, employing newly produced cellulose acetate ion exchange membranes (IEMs), which were utilized for the very first time in MCDI. As expected, the salt adsorption and charge efficiency of MCDI were shown to be higher than those of CDI. Despite this, the unique electrosorption behavior of the former reveals that ion transport via the IEMs is a crucial rate-controlling step in the desalination process. We monitored the concentration of salt in the CDI and MCDI effluent streams, but we also evaluated the pH of the effluent stream in each of these systems and investigated the factors that may have caused these shifts. The significant change in pH that takes place during one adsorption and desorption cycle in CDI (pH range: 2.3-11.6) may cause problems in feed water that already contains components that are prone to scaling. In the case of MCDI, the fall in pH was only slightly more noticeable. Based on these findings, it appears that CDI and MCDI are promising new desalination techniques that has the potential to be more ecologically friendly and efficient than conventional methods of desalination. MCDI has some advantages over CDI in its higher salt removal efficiency, faster regeneration, and longer lifetime, but it is also more expensive and complex. The best choice for a particular application will depend on the specific requirements.

Investigation on water defluoridation via batch and continuous mode using Ce-Al bimetallic oxide: Adsorption dynamics, electrochemical and LCA analysis

With variable atomic ratios, Ce-Al bimetallic oxides were fabricated using the sol-gel combustion method and utilized for efficient fluoride removal. The synthesized bimetallic oxides were extensively studied using advanced characterization techniques, including TGA, XRD, FTIR, BET surface area analysis, EDX-assisted FESEM, XPS and impedance analysis. These techniques facilitate the interpretation of the chemical and physical properties of the synthesized material. The Ce-Al (1:1) bimetallic oxide was selected as an adsorbent for the defluoridation. The Ce-Al (1:1) oxide demonstrates a moderately high surface area of 108.67 m²/g. The sorption behaviour of fluoride on Ce-Al (1:1) was thoroughly investigated using batch and column modes. The maximum fluoride removal efficiency (99.4%) was achieved at a temperature of 45 °C and pH of 7.0 using an adsorbent dose of 0.18 g/L for 35 min. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model appropriately describes the sorption process. Freundlich's adsorption isotherm was more pertinent in representing fluoride adsorption behaviour. The maximum fluoride adsorption capacity is 146.73 mg/g at 45 °C. Thermodynamics study indicates fluoride adsorption on Ce-Al (1:1) bimetallic oxide is spontaneous and feasible. The adsorption mechanism was interpreted through XPS spectra, indicating that the physisorption process is mainly responsible for fluoride adsorption. An in-depth investigation of the adsorption dynamics was carried out using mass transfer models and found that the external diffusion process limits the overall adsorption rate. An electrochemical investigation was performed to understand the effect of fluoride adsorption on the electrochemical behaviour of bimetallic oxide. The fixed-bed column adsorption study suggested that the lower flow rate and increased bed height favourably impacted the overall defluoridation process, and column adsorption results were suitably interpreted through both the Adam-Bohart model and Yoon-Nelson dynamics model. The sustainable aspect of the defluoridation process was elucidated in terms of carbon footprint measurement using life cycle assessment analysis. The carbon footprint of the entire treatment process was calculated as 0.094 tons/year.

Drinking water treatment and associated toxic byproducts: Concurrence and urgence

Reclaimed water is highly required for environmental sustainability and to meet sustainable development goals (SDGs). Chemical processes are frequently associated with highly hazardous and toxic by-products, like nitrosamines, trihalomethanes, haloaldehydes, haloketones, and haloacetic acids. In this context, we aim to summarize the formation of various commonly produced disinfection by-products (DBPs) during wastewater treatment and their treatment approaches. Owing to DBPs formation, we discussed permissible limits, concentrations in various water systems reported globally, and their consequences on humans. While most reviews focus on DBPs detection methods, this review discusses factors affecting DBPs formation and critically reviews various remediation approaches, such as adsorption, reverse osmosis, nano/micro-filtration, UV treatment, ozonation, and advanced oxidation process. However, research in the detection of hazardous DBPs and their removal is quite at an early and initial stage, and therefore, numerous advancements are required prior to scale-up at commercial level. DBPs abatement in wastewater treatment approach should be considered. This review provides the baseline for optimizing DBPs formation and advancements in the remediation process, efficiently reducing their production and providing safe, clean drinking water. Future studies should focus on a more efficient and rigorous understanding of DBPs properties and degradation of hazardous pollutants using low-cost techniques in wastewater treatment.
