Brazilian version of need for recovery scale: Assessment of structural validity, criterion validity, and internal consistency

BACKGROUND

The Need For Recovery scale (NFR) is a tool that allows early identification of work-related health risks. However, the structure of the Brazilian version of NFR scale (Br-NFR) which contains 11 items has not been evaluated.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the structural validity, criterion validity, and internal consistency of the Br-NFR scale in workers.

METHODS

672 workers were included in this study. A split-half validation method was applied to the sample to create a development and validation sample. The structure of the Br-NFR was examined through Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) using the development sample. The validation sample was used to evaluate the structure with Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). For the latter, several goodness-of-fit indices were considered to evaluate the model fit of the structures tested in this study. Criterion validity was assessed between the Brazilian structure and structures found in the literature compared with the original scale through intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC_2,1). The internal consistency of the Br-NFR was assessed using Cronbach's alpha. Both analyses used the validation sample.

RESULTS

The EFA showed that the scale has a one-factor structure and the CFA demonstrated that the Br-NFR structure with 7 items presented excellent to acceptable goodness-of-fit indices. Excellent values of ICC were found between the structures tested in the study and the original 11-item structure of the NFR. The Br-NFR scale presented good internal consistency.

CONCLUSION

The Br-NFR is unidimensional. The final 7-item version presented to be equivalent to the original 11-item scale and also has good internal consistency.

Validation of a Short-Form Version of the Danish Need for Recovery Scale against the Full Scale

Introduction: The Need for Recovery (NFR) Scale facilitates the understanding of the factors that can lead to sustainable working and employability. Short-form scales can reduce the burden on researchers and respondents. Our aim was to create and validate a short-form Danish version of the NFR Scale. Methods: Two datasets were used to conduct the exploratory and confirmatory analyses. This was done using qualitative and quantitative methods. The exploratory phase identified several short-form versions of the Danish NFR Scale and evaluated the quality of each through the assessment of content, construct and criterion validity, and responsiveness. These evaluations were then verified through the confirmatory analysis, using the second dataset. Results: A short-form NFR scale consisting of three items (exhausted at the end of a work day, hard to find interest in other people after a work day, it takes over an hour to fully recover from a work day) showed excellent validity and responsiveness compared to the nine-item scale. Furthermore, a short-form consisting of just two items also showed excellent validity and good responsiveness. Conclusion: A short-form NFR scale, consisting of three items from the Danish NFR Scale, seems to be an appropriate substitute for the full nine-item scale.

[The Need for Recovery Scale: French adaptation and validation.]

OBJECTIVES

The study presents the French validation of the scale of Need for Recovery after work (Need for Recovery) as well as the average scores according to sex, age, occupation and branch of industry.

METHOD

A representative sample of the French employees completed a questionnaire made up of the Need for Recovery Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and Maslach Burnout Inventory - General Survey. Analyses of internal consistency led us to withdraw an item from original scale; validity as well as discriminating quality were evaluated with the adequate analyses.

RESULTS

The French version of the Need for Recovery Scale has very good psychometric qualities. Internal consistency (evaluated by Alpha of Cronbach) is 0.86. This scale is correlated mainly with the ?emotional exhaustion? dimension of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (r = 0.68). The analysis highlighted groups of French employees having levels of high need for recovery: men of less than 25 years, women of more than 55 years and people practicing the profession of Teachers and equivalents'.

CONCLUSIONS

Given its predictive value on the physical and psychological health of employees, we recommend an individual or collective use of the Need for Recovery Scale in order to set up preventive actions in the workplaces.

Well-being among Italian medical oncologists: an exploratory study

BACKGROUND

Recently, attention has been focused on physicians' stress and quality-of-life improvement. Due to their relationship with patients, oncologists in particular are overloaded physically, emotionally and psychologically. Previous studies showed that training of communication skills improves the satisfaction and well-being of physicians and patients.

AIMS

Our research investigates the relationship between work stress and engagement and personal well-being in physicians working in Italian hospitals.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

176 physicians were included. Doctors filled out self-report questionnaires to evaluate work stress and coping strategies, personal well-being, work engagement and two purpose-built scales to measure the degree of perceived organizational support and the level of specific training of social and relational skills. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze data, as well as correlation analysis (Pearson's r), hierarchical regression analysis (enter step) and analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA).

RESULT

Positive and significant correlations were found between variables. Moreover, physicians who obtained higher levels of specific training on social and relational skills reported lower levels of stress. Oncologists experienced greater stress than other physicians in terms of maladaptive coping and lack of additional training.

CONCLUSIONS

The study suggests that physicians' well-being is mediated by professional aspects, such as social skills in relationships with patients.
