Abstract
BACKGROUND Musculoskeletal disorders are leading causes for long sickness absences and early retirement. Dental work is physically strenuous, and many studies have shown a relation between work-related MSDs and dentistry. However, fewer studies have focused on how these conditions affect the work ability of dentists. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to reveal the relationship between MSD, work ability and sickness absences in Finnish dentists and dental students. METHODS A questionnaire was sent to 1200 dental workers and students. It inquired of age, gender, use of dental loupes, physical exercise, use of health care, and site, length and frequency of musculoskeletal complaints. Work ability was assessed with four parameters: work ability score (WAS), future work ability (FWA), self-estimation of MSD-related work disability, and sickness absence days. RESULTS The questionnaire gained 255 responses (response rate 21%). The majority (90%) of the respondents had experienced MSD during the past year but only eleven percent of them had been on sick leave. MSDs correlated significantly with WAS, FWA and MSD-related work disability. Results remained significant even age adjusted. Age was a strong predictor of declined work ability, but gender, physical exercise or dental loupe use did not have a significant impact. CONCLUSIONS Despite all the ergonomic advances in modern dentistry, the occurrence of MSD symptoms is still high. MSDs seem to affect dentists' work ability significantly, but amount of sickness absence is relatively low, which may indicate a high level of presenteeism.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Less attention has been paid to the interaction between voice disorders, stress, and indoor environmental quality for work ability in teachers. Therefore, our aim was to study whether lower work ability associated more strongly when the variables of voice disorders and stress at work were combined as opposed to evaluating these two factors separately. METHODS We conducted a questionnaire study including validated self-assessment of work ability and a technical assessment of school buildings utilizing a sample of 1198 and a subsample (n = 538) of Finnish teachers. RESULTS When combined, voice disorders and stress at work had a stronger association to decreased work ability than when they were evaluated separately. The occurrence of stress was more prevalent in poor and moderate work ability than the occurrence of voice disorders. Nine out of 10 of the teachers who had neither voice disorders nor stress reported good work ability, while four out of 10 of the teachers who suffered from both voice disorders and stress had poor work ability. As regards the background variables, nearly half of the subjects working in the non-problem buildings have neither stress nor voice disorders. DISCUSSION We recommend offering support for reducing stress at work to improve teachers' work performance. The findings also support the maintenance of school buildings and keeping them in good condition. Follow-up studies are needed to investigate the possible effects of voice disorders and the associated variables on work ability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Healthcare workers (HCW) may experience anxiety and prolonged work schedules during pandemics. The mental health status after a COVID-19 infection and the work ability of HCW are interesting criteria in assessing their fitness to work at the return to work (RTW) medical visit. OBJECTIVES To assess mental health and work ability after a COVID-19 infection among HCW at the RTW medical visit. METHODS An observational cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out among HCW of Charles Nicolle Hospital of Tunisia infected with COVID-19 from September to December 2020. Anxiety and depression were screened using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD). The perceived ability to work at RTW was measured using the Work Ability Index (WAI). RESULTS We included 531 HCW. The median age was 40 years. HCW belonged to surgical departments (36.9%) and were nurses (32.4%). The median delay to RTW was 15 days (IQR: 13-18). At the RTW medical visit, certain anxiety and depression were found in 36.5% and 33.3% of the patients respectively. The perceived work ability was evaluated as good to very good in 37.8% of cases. The delay to RTW increased proportionally with a better-perceived work ability (p = 0.007). CONCLUSION Our study described the perceived work ability and the prevalence of anxiety and depression among the HCW at the RTW medical visit after COVID-19 infection in the early stages of the pandemic. Specific strategies for RTW after COVID-19 should take into consideration the mental health and work ability of HCW.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Urinary incontinence is a common ailment in women and is likely to affect their work ability. We investigated the associations between the different subtypes of urinary incontinence and several dimensions of perceived work ability in middle-aged general population. MATERIAL AND METHODS Cross-sectional survey at age 46 among participants of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 study (n = 3706, response rate 72%). Urinary incontinence symptoms and several items of Work Ability Index were collected by postal questionnaire. Work ability was dichotomized as good or poor work ability in general, in relation to physical job demands, to diseases and own 2-year prospect of work ability. The associations between urinary incontinence and work ability measures were assessed using logistic regression models, with further adjustments for biological, behavioral and work-related factors as well as general health. RESULTS The odds ratio (OR), from lowest to highest, for poor work ability were 1.4-fold among women with stress urinary incontinence (OR 1.37, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.09-1.72), 2.5-fold with mixed urinary incontinence (OR 2.51, 95% CI 1.68-3.74) and 3.3-fold with urgency urinary incontinence (OR 3.34, 95% CI 1.95-5.70). We note that our results reflect work ability in a Nordic society. CONCLUSIONS Especially urgency and mixed types of urinary incontinence are associated with poor work ability among middle-aged women.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to investigate occupational health (OH) primary-care patients' use of other health-care services and whether parallel use affects their likelihood to have sickness absences (SA) or disability pensions (DP). METHODS Primary-care services in Finland are provided through three parallel health-care sectors, all available to the working population: public, private and OH sectors. Patients may also be referred to secondary care. This follow-up study combines real-world medical record data containing SA data from a nationwide OH provider with health-care attendance data from public and private primary-care sectors and public secondary care, sociodemographic data and DP decisions. Patients between 18 and 68 years of age who used OH primary care at least once during the study years 2014-2016 were included. The total study population comprised 59,650 patients. Odds ratios were used to analyse association between parallel service use and SA or DP. RESULTS Females and patients with a lower educational level were more likely to use services in other health-care sectors in addition to OH than others. Those patients who used any other health-care sector in addition to OH primary care had an increased likelihood of having long SA or receiving DP. CONCLUSIONS OH primary-care patients using the services of several health-care sectors in parallel have an increased likelihood of receiving disability benefits - either SA or DP. There is need for care coordination to ensure adequate measures for work-ability support.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The existing studies among workers with a past cancer diagnosis have rarely focused on workers confronted with cancer recurrence or metastases specifically, so knowledge is lacking. The aim of this study, therefore, was to investigate the work functioning (work ability, burnout complaints, and work engagement) of workers with recurrent or metastasized cancer. Furthermore, the association of psychological capital (hope, optimism, resilience, and self-efficacy) with work functioning was studied. METHODS Data from a survey study among workers 2-10 years past cancer diagnosis were used (N = 750); 73% reported a diagnosis of breast cancer and 27% a diagnosis of cancer other than breast cancer. Analysis of variance was used to compare participants with and without cancer recurrence or metastases regarding work functioning (work ability, burnout complaints, and work engagement) and psychological capital (hope, optimism, resilience, and self-efficacy). Multivariate regression analyses were used to analyze the association of type of cancer and psychological capital with work functioning among workers with cancer recurrence or metastatic cancer (n = 54), controlling for age. RESULTS Work ability is significantly lower among workers with cancer recurrence or metastases (controlling for age); however, burnout complaints and work engagement are at comparable levels. Among workers with cancer recurrence or metastases, a higher level of hope is positively associated with work ability and work engagement, and a higher level of hope or resilience is negatively associated with burnout complaints. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS Among workers with cancer recurrence or metastases, work ability needs attention. Furthermore, especially the element hope of psychological capital is important to focus on because of the association with more favorable work functioning in general. The clinical psycho-oncological practice may benefit from these insights in guiding this vulnerable group of workers who are living with active cancer and many uncertainties.

Abstract
Objective: The effects of panic-specific psychotherapy on occupational functioning remain under-researched. This study tests whether two brief psychotherapies for Panic Disorder with or without Agoraphobia (PD/A) may generate improvement in work ability. Methods: Adults (N = 221) with a primary diagnosis of PD/A were randomised to wait-list, panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (PFPP), panic control treatment (PCT), or to the choice between the two treatments. Participants completed the Work Ability Inventory (WAI) at baseline, post-treatment, and during 24-month follow-ups. Change in WAI scores were assessed using segmented multilevel linear growth models, and mediation was explored through path analysis. Results: WAI scores changed from the moderate to good range between baseline and post-treatment (SMD = 0.45; 95% CI [0.33, 0.57]) and continued to increase throughout the follow-up (SMD = 0.16; 95% CI [0.03, 0.28]) with no differences between treatments or allocation forms. In PFPP (but not in PCT) pre- to post-treatment change in WAI was mediated by reduction in panic symptoms and WAI predicted employment status and absences. Conclusions: Two brief panic specific psychotherapies, one cognitive behavioural and one psychodynamic, produced short and long-term increases in work ability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Work and health are a national priority in Norway, and leading health authorities call for treatment approaches that incorporate these perspectives. We have little knowledge of how physiotherapists in private practice integrate the work perspective during the treatment of patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Thus, the purpose of this study was to gain more insight into the way physiotherapists in Norway integrate the aspect of work. METHODS In 2021, all 2650 privately practising members of the Norwegian Physiotherapist Association received a web-based survey that was answered by 514 physiotherapists. The survey included questions about treatment approaches, competencies, and collaboration with other health professionals in the context of promoting work participation. RESULTS 91% of the physiotherapists reported that they play an important role in assessing work ability. 75% were confident in assessing the patients' work ability, while 25% stated that they have little or some competence. 49% of the physiotherapists often contacted the general practitioner (GP) to discuss patients' ability to work, and 19% were often contacted by the GP. Only 14% stated that they were invited to participate in dialogue meetings with the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration. 28% of the physiotherapists reported that insufficient knowledge about social security issues was an obstacle in promoting the patient's work participation. The physiotherapists believed that increased use of standardised assessment tools, better knowledge of social security issues, and closer collaboration with other professionals may strengthen their role in promoting work participation. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Although physiotherapists promote work participation when treating patients on sick leave, limited communication with the stakeholders, and inadequate knowledge of social security issues pose an obstacle. To strengthen the physiotherapist's role in the return-to-work facilitation, work and health should become a separate subject in basic and advanced education programmes for physiotherapists.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing number of breast cancer cases, and improved survival due to advancements in early detection, and treatment resulted in an increase in women living beyond a cancer diagnosis. Survivors have to face long-term physical effects as well as psychosocial issues post-treatment. This study aims to study survivourship in terms of work ability, anxiety and depression. METHODS Retrospective cohort study on female breast cancer survivors from Hospital Based Cancer Registry (HBCR) of a Tertiary Cancer Centre (TCC). Data from 2016 (n=534) were collected from the medical records, and a follow-up survey (n=209) was conducted in 2022 to study their survivorship issues. RESULTS In 2022, the mean age of the cohort (n=209) was 55.45 ± 9.36. The mean work ability score was 40.7±5.73 (95% CI 39.92 to 41.48). In the multivariate binary logistic regression model, those who were married (OR 7.15, 95%CI 2.61 to 19.55), disease-free (OR 15.27, 95% CI 2.36 to 98.7), employed (OR 9.09, 95%CI 1.12 to 73.5), having no fatigue (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.05 to 6.48), no pain (OR 3.11, 95% CI 1.16 to 8.35), and no depression (OR 6.58, 95% CI 1.82-23.8) were found to have optimal work ability. Anxiety (OR 4.93, 95% CI 1.76 to 13.76), and sub-optimal work ability (OR 4.22, 95% CI 1.39 to 12.77) were predictors of depression among survivors. Disease status and fatigue were associated with all three dimensions of survivorship in our study. CONCLUSION Understanding survivorship will help improve health outcomes in this population. In our study, work ability, anxiety, depression, and their associated factors were found to be interrelated. Interventions in these areas can go a long way in improving breast cancer survivorship.

Abstract
Background Most individuals recover from the acute phase of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, however, some encounter prolonged effects, referred to as the Post-COVID syndrome. Evidence exists that such persistent symptoms can significantly impact patients' ability to return to work. This paper gives a comprehensive overview of different care pathways and resources, both personal and external, that aim to support Post-COVID patients during their work-life reintegration process. By describing the current situation of Post-COVID patients pertaining their transition back to the workplace, this paper provides valuable insights into their needs. Methods A quantitative research design was applied using an online questionnaire as an instrument. Participants were recruited via Post-COVID outpatients, rehab facilities, general practitioners, support groups, and other healthcare facilities. Results The analyses of 184 data sets of Post-COVID affected produced three key findings: (1) The evaluation of different types of personal resources that may lead to a successful return to work found that particularly the individuals' ability to cope with their situation (measured with the FERUS questionnaire), produced significant differences between participants that had returned to work and those that had not been able to return so far (F = 4.913, p = 0.001). (2) In terms of organizational provisions to facilitate successful reintegration into work-life, predominantly structural changes (i.e., modification of the workplace, working hours, and task) were rated as helpful or very helpful on average (meanworkplace 2.55/SD = 0.83, meanworking hours 2.44/SD = 0.80; meantasks 2.55/SD = 0.83), while the remaining offerings (i.e., job coaching or health courses) were rated as less helpful or not helpful at all. (3) No significant correlation was found between different care pathways and a successful return to work. Conclusion The results of the in-depth descriptive analysis allows to suggests that the level of ability to cope with the Post-COVID syndrome and its associated complaints, as well as the structural adaptation of the workplace to meet the needs and demands of patients better, might be important determinants of a successful return. While the latter might be addressed by employers directly, it might be helpful to integrate training on coping behavior early in care pathways and treatment plans for Post-COVID patients to strengthen their coping abilities aiming to support their successful return to work at an early stage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The early identification of different subgroups of individuals with partial work ability is important for the development of appropriate and effective services in order to prevent exclusion from working life and prolongation of unemployment. AIMS This study aimed to identify different main activity trajectory clusters of people with partial work ability before their participation in work ability support services and to examine sociodemographic, health, work ability and functioning features of the identified clusters. METHODS The sample consisted of clients who had participated in the Finnish Work Ability Programme during 2020-2022. Using the main activity data spanning from 2005 to 2021, optimal matching was applied to examine the similarity between the participants' main activity trajectories. Second, using cluster analysis, participants were categorised into four main activity trajectory clusters. Finally, the sociodemographic, health, work ability and functioning features of clusters were examined. RESULTS A total of 643 individuals participated in the study. Four clusters were identified: (a) early-onset retirement, (b) from studies to outside the workforce, (c) from employment to unemployment and (d) long-term employment. Individuals in the 'early-onset retirement' cluster had the best perceived work ability and functioning. Problems relating to health, work ability, functioning and well-being were highlighted in the 'from employment to unemployment' cluster. CONCLUSIONS Unemployed individuals with partial work ability form a heterogeneous population who often have several different underlying reasons for decreased work ability. Multiple data sources are needed to identify the special characteristics and needs of the people with partial work ability.

Abstract
Background and Aims Understanding the correlation of work ability (WA) and anthropometric indices with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) risk factors among public sector employees (PSE) is vital for policy direction. This study examined the correlation between work ability, anthropometric indices, and cardiovascular risk factors among PSEs. Methods The cross-sectional study had 254 (mean age = 37.18 ± 10.34) PSE. A self-reported WA index was used to measure WA. Blood pressure (BP), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), waist to hip ratio (WHR), and visceral fat were measured. Lifestyle CVDs risk history was also obtained. Results 3.9% had moderate, 51.2% good, and 44.9% excellent WA. 37.4% overweight, 20.1% obese, 19.7% hypertension history, 67.7% no physical activity history. WA correlates with increased systolic BP, BMI, WC, WHR, weight to height ratio, and visceral fat significantly. Age 24-29 (aOR = 26.38), 30-39 (aOR = 7.52), and 40-49 (aOR = 4.94) independently predict excellent WA. Overweight (aOR = 0.44) independently predict decreased excellent WA. Conclusion Participants were hypertension-prone, had increased WC, WHR, physically inactive, overweight, and obese. WA and anthropometric indices of the participants predict CVDs risks. Workplace health care strategy should be put in place to control BP, BMI, WC, WHR, weight to height ratio, and visceral fat as CVDs risk factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The assessment of work ability with reliable, thoroughly tested instruments, is central to evidence-based occupational therapy practice. AIMS/OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Finnish version of the WRI with a focus on construct validity and measurement precision. MATERIAL AND METHODS Ninety-six WRI-FI assessments were performed by 19 occupational therapists in Finland. A Rasch analysis was conducted to evaluate the psychometric properties. RESULTS The WRI-FI presented an overall fit to the Rasch model, with good targeting and separation among persons. The four-point rating scale structure was supported by the Rasch analysis, except for one item with disordered thresholds. The WRI-FI indicated stable measurement properties across gender. Seven of the 96 persons showed misfit, which slightly exceeds the criteria of 5%. CONCLUSIONS The findings from this first psychometric evaluation of the WRI-FI provided evidence of construct validity and support for measurement precision. The hierarchy among items corresponded with previous studies. The WRI-FI can offer occupational therapy practitioners a valid tool to evaluate psychosocial and environmental perspectives of persons' work ability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The postacute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS) can be addressed with multidisciplinary approaches, including professional support and digital interventions. OBJECTIVE This research aimed to test whether patients who received a health care facilitation program including medical internet support from human personal pilots and digital interventions (intervention group [IG] and active control group [ACG]) would experience fewer symptoms and have higher work ability and social participation than an untreated comparison group (CompG). The second objective was to compare the impact of a diagnostic assessment and digital interventions tailored to patients' personal capacity (IG) with that of only personal support and digital interventions targeting the main symptoms (ACG). METHODS In total, 1020 patients with PACS were recruited. Using a randomized controlled trial design between the IG and the ACG, as well as propensity score matching to include the CompG, analyses were run with logistic regression and hierarchical-linear models. RESULTS Symptoms decreased significantly in all groups over time (βT1-T2=0.13, t549=5.67, P<.001; βT2-T4=0.06, t549=2.83, P=.01), with a main effect of the group (β=-.15, t549=-2.65, P=.01) and a more pronounced effect in the IG and ACG compared to the CompG (between groups: βT1-T2=0.14, t549=4.31, P<.001; βT2-T4=0.14, t549=4.57, P<.001). Work ability and social participation were lower in the CompG, but there was no significant interaction effect. There were no group differences between the IG and the ACG. CONCLUSIONS Empowerment through personal pilots and digital interventions reduces symptoms but does not increase work ability and social participation. More longitudinal research is needed to evaluate the effects of a diagnostic assessment. Social support and digital interventions should be incorporated to facilitate health care interventions for PACS. Abstract
While a range of work-related psychosocial factors has been associated with various pain disorders and early retirement, less is known about pain cognitions and their influence on premature exit from the labor market. Therefore, as a primary objective, this study investigates associations between pain control beliefs and risk of disability pension among Danish eldercare workers. In 2005, 2257 female eldercare workers with low-back and/or neck/shoulder pain>90 days within the previous 12 months, replied to a survey and were followed for 11 years in a national register of social transfer payments. Using Cox regression, we estimated the risk of disability pension during follow-up from experiencing different levels of "pain control" and "pain influence," controlling for pain intensity and other relevant confounders. In the fully adjusted model for pain control with "high" as reference, hazard ratios of 1.30 (95% CI 1.03-1.64) and 2.09 (95% CI 1.45-3.01) are observed for "moderate" and "low," respectively, while the metric of pain influence shows hazard ratios of 1.43 (95% CI 1.11-1.87) and 2.10 (1.53-2.89), respectively. Pain control beliefs are associated with disability pension among eldercare workers with persistent pain. These results highlight the importance of evaluating not only bodily manifestations of pain, but also individual pain-related cognitions that may influence the experience of pain. PERSPECTIVE: This article addresses the complex experience of pain within an organizational context. We introduce the metrics of "pain control" and "pain influence" among workers with persistent pain, showing that the psychometric properties of these measures are prospectively associated with premature exit from the labor market.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the construct validity and internal consistency of the Work Ability Index (WAI) in patients with chronic pain in secondary and tertiary care. METHODS Cross-sectional study based on 200 patients with chronic pain (> 3 months), with a final sample of 118 participants, 18-64-years-old. Construct validity was assessed by exploratory factor analysis for the structural validity of the WAI, and by correlating the WAI with EuroQol EQ-5D, Brief Pain Inventory pain severity and interference, Patient Health Questionnaire and Generalized Anxiety Disorder scales. The study also assessed the discriminant validity of the WAI for occupational status, and the validity of the single-item work ability score. Reliability was assessed by internal consistency. RESULTS A single-factor model of WAI was supported. Internal consistency was good. Moderate correlations were found, except for Brief Pain Inventory pain severity, where the correlation was weak; hence, both convergent and divergent validity of the WAI were supported. The work ability score correlated strongly with the total WAI, and the discriminant validity for both was good. CONCLUSION In patients with chronic pain in specialized care, the WAI and the work ability score displayed acceptable construct validity and internal consistency, supporting their use in a clinical context and research.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the work ability and its associated factors in patients with glioma (II, III) and breast cancer after 6 (T0) and 12 (T1) months from surgery. A total of 99 patients were evaluated with self-reported questionnaires at T0 and T1. Correlation and Mann-Whitney tests were used to investigate the association between work ability and sociodemographic, clinical, and psychosocial factors. The Wilcoxon test was used to investigate the longitudinal change in work ability. Our sample showed a decrease in work ability level between T0 and T1. Work ability was associated with emotional distress, disability, resilience, and social support in glioma III patients at T0, and with fatigue, disability, and clinical treatments in patients with breast cancer at T0 and T1. Work ability levels decreased in patients with glioma and breast cancer and were associated with different psychosocial factors after surgery. Their investigation is suggested to facilitate the return to work.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Whereas symptomatic endometriosis may affect work performance, the impact of endometriosis in the general community is not known. AIMS The associations between endometriosis and each of sick leave and work ability, were investigated in a large sample of non-healthcare seeking women. MATERIALS AND METHODS This community-based, cross-sectional study recruited 6986 women, aged 18-39 years, from three eastern states of Australia between 11 November 2016 and 21 July 2017. Women were identified as having endometriosis if they had undergone a pelvic ultrasound and reported a diagnosis of endometriosis. Working women completed the Work Ability Index. RESULTS Participants were predominantly of European ancestry (73.1%) and 46.8% were overweight or had obesity. The prevalence of endometriosis was 5.4% (95%CI 4.9-6.0%) with the highest prevalence of 7.7% (95%CI 6.5 to 9.1%) for women aged 35-39 years. Among the 4618 working women, those with endometriosis had significantly more sick days from work (33.6% reported ≥10 days vs 13.5%, overall χ2 P < 0.001). Endometriosis was associated with a greater likelihood of poor to moderate work ability, after adjusting for age, body mass index, ethnicity, relationship status, student status, insecure housing, being a carer for another person, parity, ever use of assisted reproductive technologies, and depressed mood (odds ratio 1.90, 95%CI 1.40-2.58, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS This study provides new evidence that the negative impact of endometriosis on work attendance and work ability is not limited to women with prevalent symptoms and severe disease, but appears to encompass women across a broader spectrum of this condition in the community.

Abstract
Health and social service workers face high levels of workload and job stressors, which can affect their health and well-being. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the effectiveness of workplace interventions that aim to improve their mental and physical health outcomes. This review summarizes the findings of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that examined the impact of different types of workplace interventions on various health indicators among health and social service workers. The review searched the PubMed database from its inception to December 2022 and included RCTs that reported on the effectiveness of organizational-level interventions and qualitative studies that explored barriers and facilitators to participation in such interventions. A total of 108 RCTs were included in the review, covering job burnout (N = 56 RCTs), happiness or job satisfaction (N = 35), sickness absence (N = 18), psychosocial work stressors (N = 14), well-being (N = 13), work ability (N = 12), job performance or work engagement (N = 12), perceived general health (N = 9), and occupational injuries (N = 3). The review found that several workplace interventions were effective in improving work ability, well-being, perceived general health, work performance, and job satisfaction and in reducing psychosocial stressors, burnout, and sickness absence among healthcare workers. However, the effects were generally modest and short-lived. Some of the common barriers to participation in workplace interventions among healthcare workers were inadequate staff, high workload, time pressures, work constraints, lack of manager support, scheduling health programs outside work hours, and lack of motivation. This review suggests that workplace interventions have small short-term positive effects on health and well-being of healthcare workers. Workplace interventions should be implemented as routine programs with free work hours to encourage participation or integrate intervention activities into daily work routines.

Abstract
A 49-year-old man presented with 3 years of leg pain and involuntary toe movements. He described the pain as mild burning, radiating from the left foot upward to the leg. On examination, there were involuntary continuous flexion-extension movements of his left toes (video). Strength, sensation, and reflexes were normal. Lumbosacral MRI demonstrated diffuse degenerative disc disease with multi-level mild-to-moderate foraminal stenosis. Nerve conduction studies were normal. EMG showed neurogenic potentials and active denervation changes in the left anterior tibial and soleus muscles consistent with radiculopathy. The diagnosis of painful legs and moving toes is discussed.

Abstract
Short sleep duration is a known risk to health, but less certain is the impact of longer sleep duration on various measures of health. We investigated the relationship between sleep duration and mental health outcomes in a cross-sectional survey conducted on a homogenous sample of healthy governmental employees (N = 1212). Data on sleep duration, subjective health, psychological stress, sense of coherence, life satisfaction and work ability along with sociodemographic data were collected. Sleep duration was significantly longer, and mental health outcomes and work ability were significantly better among those in at least good subjective health. Fitting mental health outcomes on sleep duration suggested a quadratic or fractional polynomial function, therefore these were tested and the best-fitting models were selected. Longer than 8 h of sleep duration was associated with a decreasing sense of coherence and decreasing work ability. However, psychological stress and life satisfaction were positively impacted by more than 8 h of sleep. Sleep duration likely has an optimum range for health, similar to other variables reflecting homeostatic functions. However, this is difficult to prove due to the left-skewed distribution of sleep duration.

Abstract
Purpose The objective of our study was to investigate how organizational learning climate (measured as developmental opportunities and team support for learning), career commitment, and age are related to employees' self-perceived employability, vitality and work ability (e.g., their sustainable employability). Our study adopted a P-E fit perspective building upon the notion that sustainable employability is a function of both the person (P) and the environment (E) and tests a three-way interaction between organizational learning climate, career commitment, and age. Design In total, 211 members of the support staff of a Dutch university completed a survey. Hierarchical stepwise regression analysis was used to analyze the data. Findings Only one of the two dimensions of organizational learning climate that we measured, namely the developmental opportunities, appeared to be associated with all indicators of sustainable employability. Career commitment only had a direct positive relationship with vitality. Age was negatively related to self-perceived employability and to work ability, but not to vitality. The relationship between developmental opportunities and vitality was negatively influenced by career commitment (a negative two-way interaction effect), while a positive three-way interaction effect was found between career commitment, age, and development opportunities, and with self-perceived employability as the outcome. Theoretical and practical implications Our findings confirmed the relevance of adopting a P-E fit perspective on sustainable employability, and of considering the possible role of age in this. It requires more detailed analyses in future research to unravel the role of age in the shared responsibility for sustainable employability. In practice, the results of our study imply that organizations should provide all employees with a working context that facilitates learning, however, with a special focus on older employees, for whom it is a particular challenge to protect their sustainable employability, possibly due to age-related stereotyping. Originality Our study adopted a P-E fit perspective on sustainable employability and examined the association between organizational learning climate and all three components of sustainable employability: self-perceived employability, vitality and work ability. Moreover, it investigated whether and how the employee's career commitment and age influence this relationship.

Abstract
AIM To determine the extent to which level of active commute mode use is associated with self-rated health and work ability. METHODS The data were sourced from the Finnish Public Sector Study survey in 2020 (n = 38,223). The associations between active commuting - assessed with the frequency of using active commute modes - and self-rated health and work ability were examined with negative binomial regression analyses. Passive commuting and low-to-moderate levels of active commuting were compared with active commuting, and the models were adjusted for sociodemographic factors, working time mode, and lifestyle risk factors. We also assessed separate associations between walking and cycling as a mode of commuting by additionally considering the commuting distance and the outcomes. RESULTS After adjustment, when using active commuters as a reference, passive commuters had a 1.23-fold (95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.19 to 1.29) risk of suboptimal self-rated health and a 1.18-fold (95% CI 1.13 to 1.22) risk of suboptimal work ability. More frequent and/or longer distance by foot and especially by bicycle, was positively associated with health and work ability. Never commuting by bicycle was associated with a 1.65-fold (95% CI 1.55 to 1.74) risk of suboptimal health and a 1.27-fold (95% CI 1.21 to 1.34) risk of suboptimal work ability when using high-dose bicycle commuting as a reference. CONCLUSIONS
Passive commuting was associated with suboptimal self-rated health and suboptimal work ability. Our results suggest that using active commute modes, particularly cycling, may be beneficial for employee health and work ability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Planning for return to work (RTW) is relevant among sub-groups of metastatic breast cancer (mBC) survivors. RTW and protective factors for RTW in patients with mBC were determined. METHODS Patients with mBC, ages 18-63 years, were identified in Swedish registers, and data were collected starting 1 year before their mBC diagnosis. The prevalence of working net days (WNDs) (>90 and >180) during the year after mBC diagnosis (y1) was determined. Factors associated with RTW were assessed using regression analysis. The impact of contemporary oncological treatment of mBC on RTW and 5-year mBC-specific survival was compared between those diagnosed in 1997-2002 and 2003-2011. RESULTS Of 490 patients, 239 (48.8%) and 189 (36.8%) had >90 and >180 WNDs, respectively, during y1. Adjusted odds ratios (AORs) of WNDs >90 or >180 during y1 were significantly higher for patients with age ≤50 years (AOR180 = 1.54), synchronous metastasis (AOR90 = 1.68, AOR180 = 1.67), metastasis within 24 months (AOR180 = 1.51), soft tissue, visceral, brain as first metastatic site (AOR90 = 1.47) and sickness absence <90 net days in the year before mBC diagnosis, suggesting limited comorbidities (AOR90 = 1.28, AOR180 = 2.00), respectively. Mean (standard deviation) WNDs were 134.9 (140.1) and 161.3 (152.4) for patients diagnosed with mBC in 1997-2002 and 2003-2011, respectively (p = 0.046). Median (standard error) mBC-specific survivals were 41.0 (2.5) and 62.0 (9.6) months for patients diagnosed with mBC in 1997-2002 and 2003-2011, respectively (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS RTW of more than 180 WNDs was associated with younger age, early development of metastases and limited comorbidities during the year before the diagnosis of mBC. Patients diagnosed with mBC in 2003 or later had more WNDs and better survival than those diagnosed earlier.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Current research indicates that spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has a positive short-term impact on outcomes, such as quality of life, pain, and productivity in patients with chronic neuropathic pain. However, there is a need for studies on larger population samples. This study used data from Swedish national registers to analyze change and predictors of sick leave and disability pension 2 years before and after SCS treatment. Patients with SCS implanted between 2006 and 2017, and a reference group consisting of 5 individuals matched to each SCS patient without replacement with respect to age, sex, and region of residence, were included. A difference-in-difference approach was used to compare the average change (2 years after treatment vs 2 years before treatment) in net disability days and indirect cost related to disability days for the SCS group, compared with the average change for the reference group. The results showed that SCS treatment in Sweden is associated with a decrease of 21 disability days and consequent decrease in indirect cost of €4127 in working age patients. Large work loss prior to index date was also demonstrated (average 214 days before 1 year), indicating a significant burden on the patient, employers, and the society at large. The number of disability days varied considerably depending on age, sex, socioeconomic variables, and comorbidities; however, the effect of SCS seemed to have little association with patient characteristics. This economic benefit needs to be considered, as well as the clinical outcome, when evaluating the full societal value of SCS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess personal and work-related characteristics of construction workers with knee osteoarthritis (KO) associated with their ability to perform their current profession in the following 2 years. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed among Dutch construction workers diagnosed with KO using data from the Worker Health Surveillance. Logistic regression was used to assess the characteristics associated with future work ability. RESULTS On the basis of 344 construction workers with KO, being able to perform their current profession in 2 years' time was associated with working weekly 36 to 45 hours (odds ratio [OR], 3.0 to 6.3), performing high-intensity exercises 1 to 2 times weekly (OR, 2.0 to 2.6), being younger than 56 years (OR, 0.2 to 0.3), and not performing strenuous work activities such as lifting and kneeling (OR, 0.4 to 0.5). CONCLUSIONS To keep construction workers with KO at work, intervention studies should evaluate the effects of reducing strenuous work activities and promote leisure-time exercise.

Abstract
Purpose Firefighting is a profession associated with a high risk of elevated levels of occupational stress and burnout. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore the mediating effects of insomnia, depressive symptoms, loneliness and alcohol misuse in the relationship between two dimensions of burnout (i.e., exhaustion and disengagement) and work ability among firefighters. Methods A total of 460 firefighters from various regions of Poland completed a set of self-report questionnaires to assess constructs of interest. A mediation model was constructed to verify hypothesized paths, adjusted for socio-demographic and work-related background characteristics. Model parameters were estimated using a bootstrapping procedure, with sampling set at N = 1000. Results The proposed model explained 44% of variance in work ability. Higher levels of both exhaustion and disengagement predicted worsened work ability. When mediators were controlled for, these effects remained statistically significant. Depressive symptoms and feelings of loneliness were found to be partial mediators of the association between exhaustion and work ability, and between disengagement and work ability. The mediating effects of insomnia and alcohol misuse were non-significant. Conclusions Interventions aimed at counteracting the decrement in work ability among firefighters should target not only occupational burnout, but also depressive symptoms and a sense of loneliness as factors mediating its detrimental effects.

Abstract
AIM To identify clusters based on haemodialysis nurses' self-rated work ability, work engagement and self-reported work hours and to compare the identified clusters regarding hand pain after work. DESIGN Cross-sectional survey. METHODS Data based on the Work Ability Index, Utrecht Work Engagement Scale and hand pain severity after work were collected through a web-based survey among 503 haemodialysis nurses working in Sweden and Denmark. A two-step cluster analysis was used to identify homogenous groups of cases within the dataset, followed by comparative analyses of the clusters. RESULTS Four distinct clusters were identified, illustrating differing profiles of haemodialysis nurses' work ability, work engagement and working hours. Nurses who worked part-time and reported moderate work ability and average work engagement had significantly higher ratings of hand pain after work. CONCLUSIONS Haemodialysis nurses are a heterogeneous group as regards work ability, work engagement and self-reported work hours. The four distinct clusters of nurses indicate a need for customized interventions for retaining each subgroup at work.

Abstract
Workers, especially healthcare workers, are exposed to an increased risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, less is known about the impact of rehabilitation on health outcomes associated with post-COVID. This longitudinal observational study examined the changes in physical and neuropsychological health and work ability after inpatient rehabilitation of 127 patients (97 females/30 males; age 21-69 years; Mean = 50.62) who acquired COVID-19 in the workplace. Post-COVID symptoms, functional status, physical performance, neuropsychological health, employment, and work ability were assessed before and after rehabilitation. Group differences relating to sex, professions, and acute COVID status were also analyzed. Except for fatigue, the prevalence of all post-COVID symptoms decreased after rehabilitation. Significant improvements in physical performance and neuropsychological health outcomes were determined. Moreover, healthcare workers showed a significantly greater reduction in depressive symptoms compared to non-healthcare workers. Nevertheless, participants reported poor work ability, and 72.5% of them were still unable to work after discharge from rehabilitation. As most participants were still suffering from the impact of COVID-19 at rehabilitation discharge, ongoing strategies in aftercare are necessary to improve their work ability. Further investigations of this study population at 6 and 12 months after rehabilitation should examine the further course of post-COVID regarding health and work ability status.

Abstract
Women's health matters for participation in working life. The objective of this study was to explore female physiology in a work-life context and to investigate possible associations between women's health, sickness absence and work ability. A scoping review was conducted to develop a systematic overview of the current research and to identify knowledge gaps. The search strategy was developed through a population, concept and context (PCC) model, and three areas of women's health were identified for investigation in the context of work. A total of 5798 articles were screened by title and abstract and 274 articles were screened by full text; 130 articles were included in the review. The material included research from 19 countries; the majority of the studies used quantitative methods. The results showed an impact on the occupational setting and an association between sickness absence, work ability and all three areas of women's health, but a holistic and overall perspective on female biology in the work context is missing. This review calls for more knowledge on health and work and possible gender differences in this regard. Women's health and working life involve a complex connection that has the potential to develop new knowledge.

Abstract
Introduction Functional neurological symptoms (FNS) in multiple sclerosis (MS) have shown to be underinvestigated even though neurological diseases such as MS represent a risk factor for developing FNS. Comorbidity of FNS and MS can produce high personal and social costs since FNS patients have high healthcare utilization costs and a quality of life at least as impaired as in patients with disorders with underlying structural pathology. This study aims to assess comorbid FNS in patients with MS (pwMS) and investigate whether FNS in pwMS are associated with poorer health-related quality of life and work ability. Methods Newly admitted patients (234) with MS were studied during their stay at Kliniken Schmieder, a neurological rehabilitation clinic in Konstanz, Germany. The degree to which the overall clinical picture was explained by MS pathology was rated by neurologists and allied health practitioners on a five-point Likert scale. Additionally, neurologists rated each symptom reported by the patients. Health-related quality of life was assessed using a self-report questionnaire and work ability was assessed using the mean number of hours worked per day and information regarding disability pension as reported by patients. Results In 55.1% of cases, the clinical picture was completely explained by structural pathology due to MS. 17.1% of pwMS presented an overall clinical picture half or less of which could be explained by underlying structural pathology. PwMS with a higher comorbid FNS burden had a lower health-related quality of life and reported fewer working hours per day than pwMS with symptoms explained by structural pathology. Furthermore, pwMS with a full disability pension had a higher comorbid FNS burden than pwMS with no or partial disability pension. Discussion These results show that FNS should be addressed diagnostically and therapeutically since such symptoms are an important comorbidity in MS that is related to poorer health-related quality of life and lower work ability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is an autoimmune liver disease that may progress into liver cirrhosis. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is known to prevent or delay the disease progression, but little is known about work incapacity in PBC patients. We aimed to compare clinical outcomes (transplantation-free survival; cirrhosis development) and sick leave in patients with PBC with and without UDCA therapy. METHODS The medical records of 526 patients with PBC diagnosed from 2004 to 2016 were reviewed retrospectively. Sick leave data retrieved from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency were analysed for a sub-cohort of patients and matched controls. Cox regression was used for analysis of clinical outcomes. Logistic and conditional logistic regressions were used for sick leave analysis. RESULTS A total of 10.6% of patients died and 3.4% received liver transplantation over a median follow-up time of 5.7 years. UDCA-untreated patients (HR 3.62 (95%CI 2.02-6.49)) and UDCA non-responders (HR 3.78 (95% CI 1.87-7.66)) had higher mortality or transplantation rates than UDCA responders. Patients with PBC had higher odds of sick leave (OR 2.50; 95% CI 1.69-3.70) than matched controls. Untreated patients were more likely to be on sick leave (OR 3.22; 95% CI 1.12-9.25) two years after diagnosis than UDCA responders. CONCLUSION Both untreated patients and UDCA non-responders had lower liver transplantation-free survival rates than UDCA responders. Patients with PBC were more likely to be on sick leave compared to matched controls from the general population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine prognostic factors for work ability and employment/educational status among young patients referred to outpatient neurorehabilitation clinics after an acquired brain injury. METHODS A nationwide cohort study of 471 15-30-year-old patients who attended an interdisciplinary clinical assessment and provided questionnaire data at baseline and after one year. The outcomes were the Work Ability Score (WAS, 0-10 (best)) and employment/educational status after one year. Prognostic performance was analyzed using univariable regression and multivariable Ridge regression in a five-fold cross-validated procedure. RESULTS Preinjury, 86% of the patients were employed, while the percentage had decreased to 55% at baseline and 52% at follow-up. The model, which included clinical measures of function, showed moderate prognostic performance with respect to WAS (R2=0.29) and employment/educational status (area under the curve (AUC)=0.77). Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended (R2=0.15, AUC=0.68) and the cognitive subscale of the Functional Independence Measure (R2=0.09, AUC=0.64), along with fatigue measured with the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (R2=0.15, AUC=0.60) were the single predictors with the highest predictive performance. CONCLUSION Despite generally high scores in motor and cognitive tests, only about half of the patients were employed at baseline and this proportion remained stable. Global disability, cognitive sequelae and fatigue had the highest prognostic performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Having knowledge of which patients are more likely to experience fatigue during radiotherapy and the relationship between fatigue and health-related quality of life (HRQL) is important to improve identification and care of patients experiencing burdensome fatigue. OBJECTIVE To identify subgroups of patients, varying in situational, physiological, and psychological factors, who are more likely to experience fatigue an ordinary week of radiotherapy, and to compare patients experiencing and not experiencing fatigue regarding perceived HRQL and functional performance, that is, daily and physical activity and work ability. METHODS Cross-sectional study of 457 patients (52% women) undergoing radiotherapy (38% breast, 32% prostate cancer), using self-reported questionnaire data on fatigue, HRQL and functional performance analyzed using multivariable regression models. RESULTS Of the 448 patients who answered the fatigue question, 321 (72%) experienced fatigue. Patients reporting any comorbidity or depressed mood were more likely to experience fatigue, relative risk (RR) 1.56 ([95% confidence interval (CI)] 1.13-2.16) and RR 2.57 (CI 1.73-3.83), respectively. Patients with fatigue reported worse HRQL and performed less physical activity, including daily (P = .003), vigorous (P = .003) and moderate (P = .002) activity. Patients with and without fatigue reported 60% versus 40% sickness absence. CONCLUSION Patients with depressed mood or comorbidity were more likely to experience fatigue an ordinary week of radiotherapy than other patients were. Patients experiencing fatigue perceived worse HRQL and performed less daily and physical activity compared to patients not experiencing fatigue. Cancer care practitioners may consider paying extra attention to these subgroups of patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Central sensitization (CS) is present in a subgroup of patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Studies on the relationship between CS and functioning have limited operationalizations of CS and functioning. OBJECTIVE To determine whether CS was related to functioning in patients with CLBP (cross-sectional); and to determine whether changes in CS were related to changes in functioning (longitudinal). METHODS An observational prospective cohort study with data collected at baseline and discharge of an interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation program was executed. CS indicators: CS Inventory part A (CSI-A), quantitative sensory testing (QST), root mean square of successive differences of heart-rate variability (RMSSD). Functioning measures: lifting capacity, physical functioning subscale of Rand36 (Rand36-PF), Work Ability Score (WAS), Pain Disability Index (PDI). Main analyses included correlation and multiple regression controlling for confounders; cross-sectional with baseline data and longitudinal with deltas (Δ). RESULTS 76 patients with primary CLBP participated at baseline and 56 at discharge. Most associations were weak (cross-sectional r𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙=-0.30-0.24; longitudinal r𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙=-0.37-0.44). Cross-sectional multiple regression significant associations: mechanical pain threshold-QST and lifting capacity (r𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙=-0.39), parasympathetic/vagal tone-RMSSD and physical functioning-Rand36-PF (r𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙= 0.26). Longitudinal multiple regression significant associations: Δ parasympathetic/vagal tone-RMSSD and Δ lifting capacity (r𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙= 0.48), ΔCSI-A and Δdisability-PDI (r𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙= 0.36). Cross-sectional and longitudinal final regression models explained 24.0%-58.3% and 13.3%-38.0% of total variance. CONCLUSION CS was weakly related to functioning, and decreases in CS were weakly-moderately related to increases in functioning.

Abstract
There is a need to better understand the drivers of hospital utilization for the large and growing number of adults living alone. The cumulative effect of health drivers can be assessed by initially considering clinically advised information, then considering issues that a general practitioner or the person themselves may know. Logistic regression analyses were conducted on longitudinal data from the Household, Income, and Labor Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey with three time points over four years (n = 1019). The significant predictors of overnight hospitalization were the presence of a long-term health condition (Time 1), hospitalization severity and comorbidity (Time 1), work ability (Time 2), physical functioning (Time 2), being separated/divorced and having one or more health care cards. Health issues were predictive up to four years before the hospitalization window. That baseline risk of hospitalization was modified as symptoms and relatively salient changes in functionality accumulated. Specific sub-groups of hospital users had access due to insurance or special coverage. The impact of living alone on hospitalization may be able to be partly addressed through interventions such as improving access to primary care and using early warning triggers such as decreasing functionality to seek primary care before seeking hospitalization.

Abstract
Studies suggest that persistent symptoms after COVID-19 (long COVID) influence functioning and activities of daily living (ADL). However, it is still uncertain how and to what extent. This study aimed to describe patient-reported mental fatigue, ADL problems, ADL ability, sick leave and functional status among patients with long COVID. In this cross-sectional study, 448 patients, ≥18 years old and referred to occupational therapy at a Danish Post-COVID-19 Clinic, were included. Mental fatigue was measured by the Mental Fatigue Scale, ADL problems and ability were measured by the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, sick leave was self-reported and functional status was evaluated by the Post-COVID-19 Functional Status Scale. Mean age was 46.8 years, 73% of the patients were female, and 75% suffered from moderate to severe mental fatigue. The majority reported difficulties performing productive and leisure activities. The median performance and satisfaction scores were 4.8 and 3, respectively. In total, 56% of the patients were on sick leave, and 94% were referred to rehabilitation. A decrease in functional status was found between pre-COVID-19 and assessment. Conclusively, the patients were highly affected in their everyday life and had distinct rehabilitation needs. Future research is needed to address causalities and rehabilitation for this patient group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Supporting and retaining older workers has become a strategic management goal for companies, considering the ageing of the workforce and the prolongation of working lives. The relationship between health and work is especially crucial for older workers with manual tasks, considering the impact of long-standing health impairments in older age. Although different studies investigated the relationship between work ability and job performance, few studies have analysed the impact of workers' capability to balance between health and work demands, including managerial and organisational support (work-health balance). Considering health as a dynamic balance between work and health demands influenced by both individual and environmental factors, we assess the mediator role of work-health balance in the relation between work ability and job performance, both self-reported and assessed by the supervisor. METHODS The study utilises data from a case study of 156 manual workers, who were 50 years old or older and employed in a steel company in Italy. Data were collected inside the company as an organiational initiative to support age diversity. RESULTS The findings show that work-health balance partially mediates the relationship between work ability and self-rated job performance, while it does not mediate the relationship with job performance as rated by the supervisor. Supervisor-rated job performance is positively associated with work ability, while it decreases with the increasing perceived incompatibility between work and health. CONCLUSION A perceived balance between health and work is a strategic factor in increasing manual older workers' job performance. For older workers, not only the perceived capability to work is important but also the organisational health climate and supervisor's support. More studies are needed to verify if managers overlook the importance of health climate and support, as strategic elements that can foster performance for older employees.

Abstract
PURPOSE Evidence for health-related effects of German medical rehabilitation programs for back pain is inconclusive. This cohort study aimed to examine the effectiveness of medical rehabilitation in residents with back pain (German Clinical Trial Register: DRKS00011554). MATERIAL AND METHODS A sample of 45 000 people aged 45-59 years was randomly drawn from two pension agencies. We used propensity score matching to compare persons with back pain who completed a medical rehabilitation program with similar untreated subjects. Questionnaire data were assessed in 2017 and 2019, and linked with administrative data. The primary outcome was pain disability. RESULTS In total, 6610 persons with back pain were considered for matching and we finally compared 200 persons treated in a medical rehabilitation program with 200 untreated subjects. Pain disability was reported more favorable in the control group without medical rehabilitation compared to the intervention group (difference = 4.2; 95% CI -0.8-9.2), as well as other secondary outcomes. CONCLUSIONS At first glance, the findings suggest that medical rehabilitation was ineffective in improving health, pain and work ability among employed persons with back pain, but we found plausible explanations indicating that the estimated effects in favor of the untreated subjects are methodologically induced.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONPropensity score matching can be used to assess the effects of multimodal interventions in persons with back pain in routine care.Inappropriate recruitment of controls may underestimate treatment effects.When using observational data and propensity score matching to analyze the effectiveness of medical rehabilitation, baseline survey should be conducted directly before the start of rehabilitation to identify comparable controls.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine if a change to an occupation with a lower physical workload reduces the risk of all-cause disability pension (DP) and musculoskeletal DP (MDP). METHODS This study used a sample of 359 453 workers who were registered as living in Sweden in 2005 and aged 44-63 in 2010. Exposure to physical workload was measured from 2005-2010 by linking a mean value from a job exposure matrix to occupational codes. The mean values were then split into quartiles. All included participants had high exposure to physical workload (top quartile) from 2005-2007. A change in physical workload was measured as a change to (i) any lower quartile or (ii) medium-high or low quartiles from 2008-2010. DP cases were taken from register data from 2011-2016. Crude and multivariate Cox proportional-hazards regression models estimated sex-specific hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS Compared to workers with consistently high physical workload, a change to any lower quartile of physical workload was associated with a decreased risk of all-cause DP (men: HR 0.59, 95% CI 0.46-0.77, women: HR 0.63, 95% CI 0.52-0.76) and MDP (men: HR 0.52, 95% CI 0.31-0.89, women: HR 0.61, 95% CI 0.44-0.84). Older workers had the largest decreased risk for MDP. Generally, changing from high to low physical workload was associated with a greater reduced risk of DP than changing from high to medium-high physical workload. CONCLUSIONS Changing to an occupation with lower exposure to physical workload was associated with reduced risks of DP and MDP among both sexes.

Abstract
This article examines older physical education (PE) teachers' wellbeing over the course of their career in Finland. The study highlights challenges to physical and mental functioning as well as how teachers respond to these challenges. The six interviewees were over 55-year-old PE teachers, whose career had lasted for more than 30 years. Qualitative methods were used in the collection, transcription and analysis of the research data. The qualitative analysis consisted of a series of interpretations that visualised the world described by the interviewees. All the research participants had physical problems that affected their teaching and make teachers consider a potential career change. To be able to teach, teachers adapted their ways of working according to the challenges brought by age and injuries. The research participants found that the challenges caused by musculoskeletal problems and ageing were an inevitable part of the profession. They emphasised the positive sides of the work: the profession permits varied workdays. In addition, the teachers noted that their work provides them with opportunities to remain physically fit. Teaching health education is a means to lighten the workload of older teachers. PE teachers enjoy their profession and are dedicated to it, despite all the challenges. The interviewed participants clearly experienced work engagement. Our development proposal for teacher education is that future PE teachers be informed about the risks involved in the profession. Such activity helps young teachers reflect proactively on the measures taken to maintain their functioning during their career and on perspectives related to the ways of working.

Abstract
The continuous transformation process in the world of work, intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, is giving employees more scope to shape their own work. This scope can be experienced as a burden or as a resource for employees. Work design competencies (WDC) describe employees' experience of their scope for design. Our study draws on existing datasets based on two Germany-wide studies. We used hierarchical cluster analyses to examine patterns between WDC, the age of employees (range: 18-71 years), the amount of weekly work time working from home (WFH), and work ability. In total, the data of N = 1232 employees were analyzed, and 735 of them participated in Study 1. To test the validity of the clusters, we analyzed data from N = 497 employees in Study 2. In addition, a split-half validation was performed with the data from Study 1. In both studies, three clusters emerged that differed in age and work ability. The cluster with the highest mean of WDC comprised employees that were on average older and reported a higher mean of work ability. Regarding WFH, no clear patterns emerged. The results and further theoretical and practical implications are discussed. Overall, WDC appear to be relevant to work ability and, in a broader sense, to occupational health, and are related to sociodemographic factors such as age.

Abstract
Workplace violence (WV) is a significant occupational hazard for nurses. Previous studies have shown that WV has a reciprocal relationship with occupational stress. Headaches and sleep problems are early neuropsychological signs of distress. This cross-sectional study aims to ascertain the frequency of physical or verbal assaults on nurses and to study the association of WV with headaches and sleep problems. During their regular medical examination in the workplace, 550 nurses and nursing assistants (105 males, 19.1%; mean age 48.02 ± 9.98 years) were asked to fill in a standardized questionnaire containing the Violent Incident Form (VIF) concerning the episodes of violence experienced, the Headache Impact Test (HIT-6) regarding headaches, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Inventory (PSQI) on sleep quality. Occupational stress was measured using the Effort/Reward Imbalance questionnaire (ERI). Physical and non-physical violence experienced in the previous year was reported by 7.5% and 17.5% of workers, respectively. In the univariate logistic regression models, the workers who experienced violence had an increased risk of headaches and sleep problems. After adjusting for sex, age, job type, and ERI, the relationship between physical violence and headaches remained significant (adjusted odds ratio aOR = 2.25; confidence interval CI95% = 1.11; 4.57). All forms of WV were significantly associated with poor sleep in a multivariate logistic regression model adjusted for sex, age, job type, and ERI (aOR = 2.35 CI95% = 1.44; 3.85). WV was also associated with the impact of headaches and with sleep quality. WV prevention may reduce the frequency of lasting psychoneurological symptoms, such as headaches and poor sleep quality, that interfere with the ability to work.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The effects of lifestyle interventions on the prevention of a decline in work ability and mental health are not well known. The aim of this randomized controlled trial was to examine the effects of healthy lifestyle changes on work ability, sleep, and mental health. METHODS Workers aged 18-65 years, who were free from cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and malignant diseases, and did not use medication for obesity or lipids were included (N = 319). Based on their cholesterol balance, participants were classified into medium-risk and high-risk groups and were randomized into four arms: group lifestyle coaching (N = 107), individual lifestyle coaching (N = 53), the control group for group coaching (N = 106), and the control group for individual coaching (N = 53). The intervention groups received eight sessions of mostly remote coaching for 8 weeks about healthy diet, physical activity, other lifestyle habits, and sources/management of stress and sleep problems, and the control groups received no intervention. In individual coaching, the coach focused more on individual problem solving and the possibilities for motivation and change. The intention-to-treat principle was applied, and missing data on the outcomes were imputed using multiple imputation. RESULTS After the completion of the intervention, the risk of depressive symptoms was lower by 53% (95% CI 1-77%) in participants who received individual lifestyle coaching compared with the control group. The intervention had no beneficial effects on anxiety, work ability, sleep duration, or daily stress. In subgroup analyses, group lifestyle coaching had beneficial effects on depressive symptoms and work ability in participants with less tight schedules or less stretching work, whereas individual lifestyle coaching lowered the risk of depressive symptoms in those with fewer overlapping jobs, less tight schedules, or less stretching work. CONCLUSION Short but intensive remote lifestyle coaching can reduce depressive symptoms and improve work ability, and time-related resources at work may improve mental health in the context of individual lifestyle intervention. However, further randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm the findings.

Abstract
The article has several objectives. First, it aims to discuss, based on the international literature analysis, theoretical models and factors influencing early retirement decisions, and limiting work ability and employability of older people. Second, the concept of (and the factors related to) work ability as well as the role of age management in improving employability and sustaining work activity of older adults are analyzed against the backdrop of the Polish context. Cultural (ageism) and organizational (e.g., a lack of appropriate age management in companies) factors influencing work activity in the oldest age groups are taken into account. Third, the authors present some solutions and recommendations coming from the international Participation To Healthy Workplaces And inclusive Strategies in the Work Sector (PATHWAYS) project. Finally, theoretical models, concepts and solutions are integrated into a model elucidating the conditions (cultural, social, organizational, individual) influencing work ability of older adults. The model aims to take into account theories and factors identified in the literature review and grouped into several categories. Abstract
This study explores relationships between individual, microsystem (work) characteristics, and quality of life (QOL) among young adult (YA; ages 20-39 years at diagnosis) hematologic cancer survivors. Forty YAs who had completed cancer therapy within the past 5 years were recruited through social media and completed an online survey. Poorer QOL was associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms, fatigue, impaired cognitive function, and poorer work ability and financial health (all p < 0.05). A comprehensive understanding of work characteristics, including work ability, may lead to multilevel interventions improving QOL. Future research should include larger, more diverse samples of YA cancer survivors.

Abstract
In the context of a nursing shortage in many developed countries, one option for retaining the expertise of older nurses in the workforce is to better manage the retirement of nurses. This study will investigate life course predictors of actual retirement behavior, whether partial or complete, for older working nurses over a seven-year span. Data were analyzed from a quantitative, longitudinal survey of 178 Australian nurses aged 45 years and older working at Time 1 (2012), who responded seven years later (Time 2). Age predicted both forms of retirement behavior, confirming the strength of social normative pressures toward retirement. Moving against this social normative tide toward retirement were the predictors of partial retirement such as job satisfaction, physical functioning and work ability. In turn, working part-time was the only predictor, beyond age, of complete retirement. Nurse and health service managers could support nurses to stand against the tide of social normative pressures (until such social norms change) by managing the nurses' physical functioning and work ability, including by more explicitly managing the impacts of chronic diseases in the workplace, not least so as to retain their nurses in the context of nurse shortages.

Abstract
Breast cancer (BrC) treatment can produce disabilities that often impact the quality of daily life and impact the social and working relationships of the patient. This paper looked into the remaining work ability in a group of female healthcare personnel (HCPs) with BrC in Southern Italy. Each HCP was subjected to a medical check, routine blood tests, and a questionnaire on the work ability index (WAI). Of 980 (100%) HCWs undergoing health control, 6% (n = 54) had experienced BRC, and only 66.6% (n = 36) agreed to take part in the study. A total of 28 (78%) were on night shifts. The WAI score was quite low in 5 (13.8%) cases, moderate in 10 (27.7%) cases, good in 14 (38.8%) cases, and excellent in 7 (19.5%) HCWs. Among all health figures, in nurses as well as technical staff, lower WAI scores were observed. HCWs reported various comorbidities, which affected WAI score, such as limited mobility in the upper limbs, arm/shoulder pain, numbness, and lymphoedema. The main complication that negatively affects any work activity is the morbidity in the upper limbs. This seems to affect the ability to perform tasks, and the re-entry to work is highlighted on sick leave days.

Abstract
With increasing retirement ages, older workers are working longer while being newly diagnosed with chronic health conditions (CHCs). Our knowledge on how newly diagnosed CHCs influence older workers' vitality and worries is limited. We examine how four newly diagnosed CHCs affect older workers' vitality and worries about physical and mental functional ability. We used data from a Dutch pension panel survey. A sample of 1,894 older workers (60-62 years) was analyzed using conditional change OLS regression models. Having CHCs decreased vitality and increased worries. This effect was worse for older workers newly diagnosed with CHCs. Being newly diagnosed with physically disabling conditions increased worries about physical functioning, while being newly diagnosed with mentally disabling conditions increased worries about mental functioning. These findings aid the identification of vulnerable groups of older workers, thereby informing interventions that could improve quality of life, while promoting healthy aging at work.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate work ability, activity limitations and physical activity in adults that had gone through major bone sarcoma resection and reconstruction surgery in hip and knee. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty patients, of 72 enrolled, and 20 controls were included in this cross-sectional study. Work Ability Index scores (general [0-10 points], physical and mental [1-5 points]), the Patient Specific Functional Scale (0-10 points), step counts and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) were assessed. Adjusted and unadjusted general linear models were applied. RESULTS The patients had a mean age of 43 (range, 20-71) years and were assessed 7 years (range, 2-12) after surgery (proximal femoral n = 9, distal femoral n = 7, proximal tibia n = 4). Compared with controls, patients had lower general work ability (mean difference [95%CI], -1.3 points [-2.1, -0.5]) and work ability in relation to physical demands at work (-1.4 points [-2.0, -0.8]). The patients reported higher severities of activity limitation (-6.7 points [-7.9, -5.4]). There were no between-group differences in step counts or IPAQ-scores. CONCLUSION Despite similar levels of physical activity, patients showed poorer work ability and severe activity limitation. Post-operative rehabilitation in patients of the working-age population should include assessments of work ability and activities important to the individual.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONAdults that have gone through resection and reconstruction surgery following bone sarcoma in lower extremity show clinically relevant reductions in work ability and self-selected activitiesTo tailor post-operative rehabilitation at short and long term, initial assessment and monitoring should include work ability and activities important to the individual patient.
