Structure-tunable assembly of lignin sub-micro spheres by modifying the amphiphilic interfaces of lignin via n-alkane

Synthesis and Micellization of Carbosilane Sulfonate Surfactants with Short Alkyl Chains

Carbosilane surfactants, consisting of carbosilane as a hydrophobic group linked to hydrophilic groups, are one kind of silicone surfactants. In this paper, a series of carbosilane sulfonate surfactants with short alkyl chains (Cn-Si2C-SO3Na (n = 1-6)), Me-Si2C-SO3Na, Et-Si2C-SO3Na, Pr-Si2C-SO3Na, Bu-Si2C-SO3Na, Pen-Si2C-SO3Na, and Hex-Si2C-SO3Na, were prepared and characterized by 29 Si NMR, 1H NMR, and FT-IR spectroscopies. The influence of the alkyl chain length on their micellization was studied using surface tension, dynamic light scattering, conductivity, and transmission electron microscopy. The CMC value decreases with increasing length of the short alkyl group. The γCMC value of Cn-Si2C-SO3Na (n = 1-6) increases as the alkyl chain increases from methyl to propyl, while the γCMC value gradually decreases as the alkyl chain increases from propyl to hexyl. The larger and rigid tetramethyldicarbosilane group functioned synergistically with a short alkyl chain, resulting in carbosilane sulfonate surfactants adsorbing at the air/water interface with a rugby ball shape; accordingly, the Amin values of the investigated carbosilane sulfonate surfactants increase with increasing length of the alkyl chain. The micellization process of carbosilane sulfonate surfactants is enthalpy-driven at lower temperatures and entropy-driven at high temperatures. The ΔHm0 values became more negative and ΔSm0 values more positive as the alkyl chain length increased. Aggregates in the range of 10-800 nm were observed for Cn-Si2C-SO3Na (n = 1-6) in an aqueous solution, and the hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) decreased with increasing length of the short alkyl group.

Lignins as Promising Renewable Biopolymers and Bioactive Compounds for High-Performance Materials

The recycling of biomass into high-value-added materials requires important developments in research and technology to create a sustainable circular economy. Lignin, as a component of biomass, is a multipurpose aromatic polymer with a significant potential to be used as a renewable bioresource in many fields in which it acts both as promising biopolymer and bioactive compound. This comprehensive review gives brief insights into the recent research and technological trends on the potential of lignin development and utilization. It is divided into ten main sections, starting with an outlook on its diversity; main properties and possibilities to be used as a raw material for fuels, aromatic chemicals, plastics, or thermoset substitutes; and new developments in the use of lignin as a bioactive compound and in nanoparticles, hydrogels, 3D-printing-based lignin biomaterials, new sustainable biomaterials, and energy production and storage. In each section are presented recent developments in the preparation of lignin-based biomaterials, especially the green approaches to obtaining nanoparticles, hydrogels, and multifunctional materials as blends and bio(nano)composites; most suitable lignin type for each category of the envisaged products; main properties of the obtained lignin-based materials, etc. Different application categories of lignin within various sectors, which could provide completely sustainable energy conversion, such as in agriculture and environment protection, food packaging, biomedicine, and cosmetics, are also described. The medical and therapeutic potential of lignin-derived materials is evidenced in applications such as antimicrobial, antiviral, and antitumor agents; carriers for drug delivery systems with controlled/targeting drug release; tissue engineering and wound healing; and coatings, natural sunscreen, and surfactants. Lignin is mainly used for fuel, and, recently, studies highlighted more sustainable bioenergy production technologies, such as the supercapacitor electrode, photocatalysts, and photovoltaics.

Biobased Nanomaterials─The Role of Interfacial Interactions for Advanced Materials

This review presents recent advances regarding biomass-based nanomaterials, focusing on their surface interactions. Plant biomass-based nanoparticles, like nanocellulose and lignin from industry side streams, hold great potential for the development of lightweight, functional, biodegradable, or recyclable material solutions for a sustainable circular bioeconomy. However, to obtain optimal properties of the nanoparticles and materials made thereof, it is crucial to control the interactions both during particle production and in applications. Herein we focus on the current understanding of these interactions. Solvent interactions during particle formation and production, as well as interactions with water, polymers, cells and other components in applications, are addressed. We concentrate on cellulose and lignin nanomaterials and their combination. We demonstrate how the surface chemistry of the nanomaterials affects these interactions and how excellent performance is only achieved when the interactions are controlled. We furthermore introduce suitable methods for probing interactions with nanomaterials, describe their advantages and challenges, and introduce some less commonly used methods and discuss their possible applications to gain a deeper understanding of the interfacial chemistry of biobased nanomaterials. Finally, some gaps in current understanding and interesting emerging research lines are identified.

Self-assembled/composited lignin colloids utilizing for therapy, cosmetics and emulsification

Lignin, the most abundant source of renewable aromatic compounds on the planet, is attracting more scholarly attention due to its possibility of replacing petroleum-based chemicals and products. However, it remains underutilized because of the heterogeneity of its multi-level structure that prevents homogenization and standardization of derived products. The key to solving these problems lies in finding a general preparation method to achieve the integrated utilization of lignin molecules at all levels. The assembly-mediated granulation methods provide a significant means for the integrated value-added utilization of lignin, and for biomass productization applications, it is significant to understand the molecular mechanisms of lignin nano-colloids (LNCs) formation thus accurately guiding their functionalization. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the assembly morphology and behavior of lignin in different solutions towards colloids is of great scientific importance. In this minireview, we focus on the assembly behavior of lignin in different solvents, specifically in mono-solvent and multi-solvent, and in particular, we review various methods for preparing lignin composite colloids and concentrate on the applications in therapy, cosmetics and emulsification, which are important for guiding the preparation and efficient utilization of LNCs.

Role of lignin-based nanoparticles in anticancer drug delivery and bioimaging: An up-to-date review

Lignin, an aromatic biopolymer, is the second most abundant naturally occurring one after cellulose that has drawn a great deal of interest over the years for its potential uses owing to the presence of high content of phenolic compounds, ecofriendly feature and cost-efficiency in comparison to the synthetic polymers. Nevertheless, with the intention of advancing its development, several efforts have been performed in the direction of utilizing lignin on the nanoscale due to its inimitable properties. The notable absorption capacity, fluorescence emission, biodegradability and non-toxicity of lignin nanoparticles permit its appropriateness as a vehicle for drugs and as a bioimaging material. Moreover, lignin nanoparticles have shown plausible therapeutic effects, such as anticancer, antimicrobial, and antioxidant. The current review sheds light on the recent development in the formulation and anticancer applications of lignin nanoparticles as a drug carrier and as a diagnostic tool. The surface properties of the nanomaterial affect the end product characteristics, hence, factors namely; lignin source, isolation technique, purification and quantitation methods, are discussed in this review. Recent Studies on the Preparation and Application of Ionic Amphiphilic Lignin: A Comprehensive Review

As the second most abundant natural polymer after cellulose, lignin has received considerable attention recently due to its reproducibility, safety, and biodegradability. Studies are now focusing on the development of new lignin applications to replace petroleum-based chemicals. Unfortunately, lignin has several inherent problems, such as poor water solubility and a tendency to agglomerate. However, after chemical modification, lignin can gain new functions through the introduction of new functional groups. For example, amphiphilic lignin is a polymer that is soluble in both water and organic solvents. Amphiphilic lignin polymers can be divided into anionic, cationic, and anionic-cationic amphoteric lignin-based polymers, according to the ions contained in their molecular structure. Amphiphilic lignin polymers also have a wide range of applications in various industrial fields and can be used as wetting agents, detergents, controlled release fertilizers, adsorbents, and emulsifiers. Thus, this article reviews research progress on the synthesis and applications of amphiphilic lignin-derived polymers over the past 10 years, providing a theoretical reference for the utilization of high-added-value and high-performance lignin.

Microfluidic Synthesis of Lignin/Chitosan Nanoparticles for the pH-Responsive Delivery of Anticancer Drugs

In this work, lignin/chitosan nanoparticles (Lig/Chi NPs) with controlled structures were synthesized in a simple and scalable microfluidic system. When the positively charged chitosan and the negatively charged lignin solution were blended in a microreactor, Lig/Chi NPs were rapidly formed via the electrostatic coassembly between the amino groups of chitosan and the carboxyl groups of lignin. The ζ potential changes from negative (-13 mV) to positive (+54.5 mV) for Lig NPs and Lig/Chi NPs, respectively. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results demonstrated that Lig/Chi NPs have an average particle size of about 180 nm, which can be used as nanocarriers for drug delivery. The anticancer drug nanoparticles with docetaxel (DTX) and curcumin (CCM) were prepared by coassembly with Lig/Chi NPs in a microreactor, which had good drug loading efficiency, biocompatibility, and can release drugs in response to pH in the weakly acidic environment of the tumor. The drug release amounts in acidic solutions that simulated the tumor microenvironment were 51% (DTX@Lig/Chi NPs) and 50% (CCM@Lig/Chi NPs), respectively, which were better than the release amounts at pH 7.4, and have an obvious killing effect on HeLa cells.

The Characteristics of Natural Rubber Composites with Klason Lignin as a Green Reinforcing Filler: Thermal Stability, Mechanical and Dynamical Properties

The objective of this work was to investigate the influences of Klason lignin as a filler on the thermal stability and properties of natural rubber composites. The modulus and tensile strength of stabilized vulcanizates were measured before and after thermo-oxidative aging. It was determined that lignin filled natural rubber had significantly enhanced thermo-oxidative aging and mechanical properties compared to those of controlled samples. The reinforcement effect of lignin increased stress with lignin loading but it decreased at 20 phr, suggesting that the reinforcement mechanism of lignin was via strain-induced crystallization. The composite samples with 10 phr filler loading had the highest mechanical properties as well as thermo-oxidative degradation resistance. Such a finding could be due to interactions between the Klason lignin filler and natural rubber matrix. Based on the findings in this work, the degradation temperature of Klason lignin occurred at 420 °C. The absorption peaks at wavenumbers 1192 and 1374 cm⁻¹ indicated that C–O stretching vibrations of the syringyl and guaiacyl rings of hardwood lignin existed. It was also found that the Klason lignin–rubber composite containing 10 phr had the highest stress–strain, 100% modulus, and tensile strength, while lignin showed increasing aging resistance of the composite comparable with commercial antioxidant at 1.5 phr. It appears that Klason lignin from rubberwood could be used as a green antioxidant and alternative reinforcing filler and for high performance eco-friendly natural rubber biocomposites.

Lignin-Based Nanoparticles: A Review on Their Preparations and Applications

Lignin is the most abundant by-product from the pulp and paper industry as well as the second most abundant natural renewable biopolymer after cellulose on earth. In recent years, transforming unordered and complicated lignin into ordered and uniform nanoparticles has attracted wide attention due to their excellent properties such as controlled structures and sizes, better miscibility with polymers, and improved antioxidant activity. In this review, we first introduce five important technical lignin from different sources and then provide a comprehensive overview of the recent progress of preparation techniques which are involved in the fabrication of various lignin-based nanoparticles and their industrial applications in different fields such as drug delivery carriers, UV absorbents, hybrid nanocomposites, antioxidant agents, antibacterial agents, adsorbents for heavy metal ions and dyes, and anticorrosion nanofillers.

Emerging Strategies for Modifying Lignin Chemistry to Enhance Biological Lignin Valorization

Biological lignin valorization represents a promising approach contributing to sustainable and economic biorefineries. The low level of valuable lignin-derived products remains a major challenge hindering the implementation of microbial lignin conversion. Lignin's properties play a significant role in determining the efficiency of lignin bioconversion. To date, despite significant progress in the development of biomass pretreatment, lignin fractionation, and fermentation over the last few decades, little efforts have gone into identifying the ideal lignin substrates for an efficient microbial metabolism. In this Minireview, emerging and state-of-the-art strategies for biomass pretreatment and lignin fractionation are summarized to elaborate their roles in modifying lignin structure for bioconversion. Fermentation strategies aimed at enhancing lignin depolymerization for microbial utilization are systematically reviewed as well. With an improved understanding of the ideal lignin structure elucidated by comprehensive metabolic pathways and/or big data analysis, modifying lignin chemistry could be more directional and effective. Ultimately, together with the progress of fermentation process optimization, biological lignin valorization will become more competitive in biorefineries.

Lignin-Based Spherical Structures and Their Use for Improvement of Cilazapril Stability in Solid State

Biopolymer-based spherical particles exhibit unique properties including narrow sizes and many functional groups on their surfaces. Therefore, they show great potential for application in many scientific and industrial processes. The main aim of this study was to prepare lignin-based spherical particles with the use of a cationic surfactant, hexadecyl(trimethyl)ammonium bromide (CTAB). In the first step, different preparation procedures were tested with varying parameters, including biopolymer and surfactant ratios, lignin filtration, and experimental time. The morphological and dispersion characteristics of the materials were determined to select the best samples with the most promising properties, which could then be tested for their acute toxicity. It was observed that almost all materials were characterized by spherical shapes in micro- and nanosizes. The sample with the best physicochemical properties was used for further analysis and then tested for medical applications: the improvement of the stability of a drug molecule, cilazapril (CIL). The formulated material (CIL@LC-2a 1:1 wt./wt.) exhibited outstanding properties and significantly improved the stability of cilazapril as tested in conditions of increased temperature and humidity. Lignin spherical particles may be employed as a promising material for shielding other active compounds from decomposition.
