Recent advances on visible light photoinitiators of polymerization based on Indane-1,3-dione and related derivatives

Exploiting Visible-Light Induced Radical to Cation Transformation Pathway for Reactivity Enhanced Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution Polymerization of Heteroaromatics

A straightforward approach is employed to synthesize methylene-bridged poly(hetero aromatic)s based on furan, pyrrole, thiophene, and thiophene derivatives. The process involves an electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction facilitated by a visible light-initiated system consisting of manganese decacarbonyl and an iodonium salt. The approach mainly relies on the formation of halomethylium cation, the attack of this cation to heteroaromatic, regeneration of methylium cation on the heteroaromatic, and reactivity differences between halomethylium and heteroaromatic methylium cations for successful polymerizations. This innovative synthetic strategy lead to the formation of polymers with relatively high molecular weights as the stoichiometric imbalance between the comonomers increased. Accordingly, these newly obtained polymers exhibit remarkable fluorescence properties, even at excitation wavelengths as low as 330 nm. Moreover, by harnessing the halogens at chain ends of homopolymers, block copolymers are successfully synthesized, offering opportunities for tailored applications in diverse fields.

First-Row d6 Metal Complex Enables Photon Upconversion and Initiates Blue Light-Dependent Polymerization with Red Light

Photosensitizers for sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (sTTA-UC) often rely on precious heavy metals, whereas coordination complexes based on abundant first-row transition metals are less common. This is mainly because long-lived triplet excited states are more difficult to obtain for 3d metals, particularly when the d-subshell is only partially filled. Here, we report the first example of sTTA-UC based on a 3d6 metal photosensitizer yielding an upconversion performance competitive with precious metal-based analogues. Using a newly developed Cr0 photosensitizer featuring equally good photophysical properties as an OsII benchmark complex in combination with an acetylene-decorated anthracene annihilator, red-to-blue upconversion is achievable. The upconversion efficiency under optimized conditions is 1.8 %, and the excitation power density threshold to reach the strong annihilation limit is 5.9 W/cm2 . These performance factors, along with high photostability, permit the initiation of acrylamide polymerization by red light, based on radiative energy transfer between delayed annihilator fluorescence and a blue light absorbing photo-initiator. Our study provides the proof-of-concept for photon upconversion with elusive first-row analogues of widely employed precious d6 metal photosensitizers, and for their application in photochemical reactions triggered by excitation wavelengths close to near-infrared.

High-performance photoinitiating systems for new generation dental fillings

OBJECTIVES

To obtain new generation dental composites with improved performance properties compared to currently available dental fillings on the market and to determine the influence of new initiating systems on final product parameters such as degree of cure, hardness, color, and shrinkage.

METHODS

In order to verify the effectiveness of the developed initiating systems, typical spectroscopic, electrochemical, and kinetic studies using the real-time FT-IR method were shown. Moreover, paste dental fillings were prepared, the compositions were irradiated with the dental lamp, and the degrees of cross-linking were measured by Raman spectroscopy. The polymerization shrinkage was also determined using the rheometer. In addition, their hardness was examined on the Shore scale. Finally, the color analysis of the composites in the L*a*b* color space was compared with the VITA CLASSIC colorant.

RESULTS

It was shown that, due to their excellent spectroscopic and electrochemical properties, new quinazolin-2-one can act as co-initiators in cationic and radical photopolymerization. It was demonstrated that the most effective composite containing the initiator system in the form of 3-SCH3Ph-Q, IOD, MDEA, and an inorganic filler as nanometric silica and a bonding agent is cured more than 90% after just 1 cycle of dental lamp exposure (30 s), the hardness of the composite after curing on the Shor Scale is 82 ± 4, and the polymerization shrinkage is less than 2.8%.

SIGNIFICANCE

The article demonstrates effective new initiator systems as an alternative to CQ/amine for obtaining new-generation dental composites. The developed dental composites are a big competition to the currently used dental fillings on the market.

Synthesis and Optical Properties of a Series of Push-Pull Dyes Based on Pyrene as the Electron Donor

Fifteen push-pull dyes comprising the tetracyclic polyaromatic pyrene have been designed and synthesized. The optical properties of the fifteen dyes have been examined in twenty-two solvents of different polarities. Surprisingly, contrarily to what is classically observed for push-pull dyes of D-π-A structures, a negative solvatochromism could be found for numerous dyes. The photoluminescence and thermal properties of the dyes were also examined. Theoretical calculations were carried out to support the experimental results.

A novel indene-chalcone-based fluorescence probe with lysosome-targeting for detection of endogenous carboxylesterases and bioimaging

An indene-chalcone-based fluorescence probe 1 was synthesized and characterized. Under physiological conditions (containing 5% DMSO), probe 1 showed satisfactory stability with a low background signal and recognized carboxylesterases (CEs) based on the catalytic hydrolysis of ester groups, releasing a significant green fluorescence. Probe 1 presents several features including a short response time (within 20 min), low detection limit (1.3 × 10^-4 U/mL) and large stokes shift (over 155 nm). Notably, commercial lysosomal dye co-staining experiments illustrated the lysosomal localization function of 1, with the probe also being used for cell and zebrafish imaging of endogenous CEs.

Solid Fluorescence pH Sensors Based on 1,8-Naphthalimide Copolymers Synthesized by UV Curing

Novel water-swollen photo-crosslinked membranes were obtained by copolymerization of the N-vinylpyrrolidone, butyl acrylate and ethyl methacrylate monomers functionalized with naphthalimide groups, as pH sensitive fluorescence probes. For that purpose, two monomers with pending naphthalimide groups anchored to ethyl methacrylate through alkyl chains with different length, were previously synthesized. The membranes were characterized using different techniques. The pH dependence of absorbance and the corresponding quenching of fluorescence were investigated and related to the structure of naphthalimide substituents linked to the membrane. The new solid sensors exhibited sensitive fluorescence changes at pH < 3, and lower time response was determined for membranes where the sensing group was linked through longer alkyl chain to the polymer matrix. The membranes were solid, thermally stable and easily handled to be applied as sensor materials, and showed a reversible behavior, which is an important feature for further fabrication of an economical on-site tool for the acidity detection in aqueous environments.

High-Performance UV-Vis Light Induces Radical Photopolymerization Using Novel 2-Aminobenzothiazole-Based Photosensitizers

The popularity of using the photopolymerization reactions in various areas of science and technique is constantly gaining importance. Light-induced photopolymerization is the basic process for the production of various polymeric materials. The key role in the polymerization reaction is the photoinitiator. The huge demand for radical and cationic initiators results from the dynamic development of the medical sector, and the optoelectronic, paints, coatings, varnishes and adhesives industries. For this reason, we dealt with the subject of designing new, highly-efficient radical photoinitiators. This paper describes novel photoinitiating systems operating in UV-Vis light for radical polymerization of acrylates. The proposed photoinitiators are composed of squaraine (SQ) as a light absorber and various diphenyliodonium (Iod) salts as co-initiators. The kinetic parameters of radical polymerization of trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA), such as the degree of double bonds conversion (C%), the rate of photopolymerization (Rp), as well as the photoinitiation index (Ip) were calculated. It was found that 2-aminobenzothiazole derivatives in the presence of iodonium salts effectively initiated the polymerization of TMPTA. The rates of polymerization were at about 2 × 10-2 s-1 and the degree of conversion of acrylate groups from 10% to 36% were observed. The values of the photoinitiating indexes for the most optimal initiator concentration, i.e., 5 × 10-3 M were in the range from 1 × 10-3 s-2 even to above 9 × 10-3 s-2. The photoinitiating efficiency of new radical initiators depends on the concentration and chemical structure of used photoinitiator. The role of squaraine-based photoinitiating systems as effective dyeing photoinitiators for radical polymerization is highlighted in this article.

Effect of the Steric Hindrance and Branched Substituents on Visible Phenylamine Oxime Ester Photoinitiators: Photopolymerization Kinetics Investigation through Photo-DSC Experiments

In this work, free radical photopolymerization (FRP) kinetics for series of different phenylamine oxime ester structures (DMA-P, DEA-P, DMA-M, TP-2P, TP-2M and TP-3M) was investigated. Steric hindrance and branched substituents were prepared to realize the corresponding electronic and photopolymerization effects. The photophysical, electrochemical, thermal properties and radical concentration were investigated by UV-visible spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Furthermore, the structure-reactivity relationships were also studied in detail through photo-DSC experiment. We demonstrate that the introduction of alkyl chains and/or numbers of oxime esters affects significantly the photoreactivity. Under the same weight ratio of formulation and irradiated condition, TP-3M containing three oxime esters in its structure and methyl group in the periphery exhibits the highest double-bond conversion efficiency. TP-3M-based formulation also shows a wide operation window under different contents and light intensities. Importantly, the photoreactivity of the TP-3M-based system was found to be better than the commercial photoinitiator (OXE-01) under LED@405 nm at a low concentration. This work could provide some significance to the design of oxime esters with enhanced photoreactivity.

A Critical Review for Synergic Kinetics and Strategies for Enhanced Photopolymerizations for 3D-Printing and Additive Manufacturing

The synergic features and enhancing strategies for various photopolymerization systems are reviewed by kinetic schemes and the associated measurements. The important topics include (i) photo crosslinking of corneas for the treatment of corneal diseases using UVA-light (365 nm) light and riboflavin as the photosensitizer; (ii) synergic effects by a dual-function enhancer in a three-initiator system; (iii) synergic effects by a three-initiator C/B/A system, with electron-transfer and oxygen-mediated energy-transfer pathways; (iv) copper-complex (G1) photoredox catalyst in G1/Iod/NVK systems for free radical (FRP) and cationic photopolymerization (CP); (v) radical-mediated thiol-ene (TE) photopolymerizations; (vi) superbase photogenerator based-catalyzed thiol-acrylate Michael (TM) addition reaction; and the combined system of TE and TM using dual wavelength; (vii) dual-wavelength (UV and blue) controlled photopolymerization confinement (PC); (viii) dual-wavelength (UV and red) selectively controlled 3D printing; and (ix) three-wavelength selectively controlled in 3D printing and additive manufacturing (AM). With minimum mathematics, we present (for the first time) the synergic features and enhancing strategies for various systems of multi-components, initiators, monomers, and under one-, two-, and three-wavelength light. Therefore, this review provides not only the bridging between modeling and measurements, but also guidance for further experimental studies and new applications in 3D printings and additive manufacturing (AM), based on the innovative concepts (kinetics/schemes).

Recent Advances in bis-Chalcone-Based Photoinitiators of Polymerization: From Mechanistic Investigations to Applications

Over the past several decades, photopolymerization has become an active research field, and the ongoing efforts to develop new photoinitiating systems are supported by the different applications in which this polymerization technique is involved-including dentistry, 3D and 4D printing, adhesives, and laser writing. In the search for new structures, bis-chalcones that combine two chalcones' moieties within a unique structure were determined as being promising photosensitizers to initiate both the free-radical polymerization of acrylates and the cationic polymerization of epoxides. In this review, an overview of the different bis-chalcones reported to date is provided. Parallel to the mechanistic investigations aiming at elucidating the polymerization mechanisms, bis-chalcones-based photoinitiating systems were used for different applications, which are detailed in this review.
