POSS hybrid hydrogels: A brief review of synthesis, properties and applications

An engineered POSS drug delivery system for copper(II) anticancer metallodrugs in a selective application toward melanoma cells

In this work, a polyhedral silsesquioxane (POSS) was used as an engineered drug delivery system for two oxindolimine-copper(II) anticancer complexes, [Cu(isaepy)]+ and [Cu(isapn)]+. The interest in hybrid POSS comes from the necessity of developing materials that can act as adjuvants to improve the cytotoxicity of non-soluble metallodrugs. Functionalization of POSS with a triazole ligand (POSS-atzac) permitted the anchorage of such copper complexes, producing hybrid materials with efficient cytotoxic effects. Structural and morphological characterizations of these copper-POSS systems were performed by using different techniques (IR, NMR, thermogravimetric analysis). A combination of continuous-wave (CW) and pulsed EPR (HYSCORE) spectroscopies conducted at the X-band have enabled the complete characterization of the coordination environment of the copper ion in the POSS-atzac matrix. Additionally, the cytotoxic effects of the loaded materials, [Cu(isapn)]@POSS-atzac and [Cu(isaepy)]@POSS-atzac, were assessed toward melanomas (SK-MEL), in comparison to non-tumorigenic cells (fibroblast P4). Evaluation of their nuclease activity or ability to facilitate cleavage of DNA indicated concentrations as low as 0.6 μg mL-1, while complete DNA fragmentation was observed at 25 μg mL-1. By using adequate scavengers, investigations on active intermediates responsible for their cytotoxicity were performed, both in the absence and in the presence of ascorbate as a reducing agent. Based on the observed selective cytotoxicity of these materials toward melanomas, investigations on the reactivity of these complexes and corresponding POSS-materials with melanin, a molecule that contributes to melanoma resistance to chemotherapy, were carried out. Results indicated the main role of the binuclear copper species, formed at the surface of the silica matrix, in the observed reactivity and selectivity of these copper-POSS systems.

A Comprehensive Review on Starch-Based Hydrogels: From Tradition to Innovation, Opportunities, and Drawbacks

Natural hydrogels based on renewable and inexpensive sources, such as starch, represent an interesting group of biopolymeric materials with a growing range of applications in the biomedical, cosmeceutical, and food sectors. Starch-based hydrogels have traditionally been produced using different processes based on chemical or physical methods. However, the long processing times, high energy consumption, and safety issues related to the synthesis of these materials, mostly causing severe environmental damage, have been identified as the main limitations for their further exploitation. Therefore, the main scientific challenge for research groups is the development of reliable and sustainable processing methods to reduce the environmental footprint, as well as investigating new low-cost sources of starches and individuating appropriate formulations to produce stable hydrogel-based products. In the last decade, the possibility of physically modifying natural polysaccharides, such as starches, using green or sustainable processing methods has mostly been based on nonthermal technologies including high-pressure processing (HPP). It has been demonstrated that the latter exerts an important role in improving the physicochemical and techno-functional properties of starches. However, as for surveys in the literature, research activities have been devoted to understanding the effects of physical pre-treatments via high-pressure processing (HPP) on starch structural modifications, more so than elucidating its role and capacity for the rapid formation of stable and highly structured starch-based hydrogels with promising functionality and stability, utilizing more sustainable and eco-friendly processing conditions. Therefore, the present review addresses the recent advancements in knowledge on the production of sustainable starch-based hydrogels utilizing HPP as an innovative and clean-label preparation method. Additionally, this manuscript has the ambition to give an updated overview of starch-based hydrogels considering the different types of structures available, and the recent applications are proposed as well to critically analyze the main perspectives and technological challenges for the future exploitation of these novel structures.

Injectable Hydrogels: A Paradigm Tailored with Design, Characterization, and Multifaceted Approaches

Biomaterials denoting self-healing and versatile structural integrity are highly curious in the biomedicine segment. The injectable and/or printable 3D printing technology is explored in a few decades back, which can alter their dimensions temporarily under shear stress, showing potential healing/recovery tendency with patient-specific intervention toward the development of personalized medicine. Thus, self-healing injectable hydrogels (IHs) are stunning toward developing a paradigm for tissue regeneration. This review comprises the designing of IHs, rheological characterization and stability, several benchmark consequences for self-healing IHs, their translation into tissue regeneration of specific types, applications of IHs in biomedical such as anticancer and immunomodulation, wound healing and tissue/bone regeneration, antimicrobial potentials, drugs, gene and vaccine delivery, ocular delivery, 3D printing, cosmeceuticals, and photothermal therapy as well as in other allied avenues like agriculture, aerospace, electronic/electrical industries, coating approaches, patents associated with therapeutic/nontherapeutic avenues, and numerous futuristic challenges and solutions.

Hyperbranched, Functional Polyethoxysiloxanes: Tunable Molecular Building Blocks

Functional silanes are multifaceted cross-linkers, compatibilizers, coupling agents, and surface modifiers. Herein, we present organofunctional polysiloxane building blocks that offer great versatility in terms of molecular weight, degree of condensation, and the choice and loading of organic substituent groups. The organofunctional polyethoxysilanes (funPEOS) are prepared in a one-pot, two-step process: synthesis of the PEOS carrier/substrate, followed by grafting a functional silane "shell", both based on condensation with acetic anhydride. The reaction was optimized at the lab scale and scaled up to a 7 L reactor. The acetylation, condensation, and hyperbranched structure of the carrier were confirmed by 29Si NMR, while 29Si-29Si 2D INADEQUATE NMR provides strong evidence for the grafting of functional silanes onto the carrier (Q-T coupling). IR, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy demonstrate that the functional groups remain intact. The molar mass can be tailored by stoichiometric control of the acetic anhydride to silane monomer ratio (M n 3500-20,000 g/mol). The compounds are stable organic liquids with a long shelf life. Selected applications are presented: scratch-resistant coatings with water contact angles of ∼90°, stable water emulsions, and surfactant-free, mesoporous silica foams.

Novel Strategy for Screening Target Proteins by the Common Drugs─Sofosbuvir-Specific Profiling of HCV Patient Serum

It is the scientific basis of precision medicine to study all of the targets of drugs based on the interaction between drugs and proteins. It is worth paying attention to unknown proteins that interact with drugs to find new targets for the design of new drugs. Herein, we developed a protein profiling strategy based on drug-protein interactions and drug-modified magnetic nanoparticles and took hepatitis C virus (HCV) and its corresponding drug sofosbuvir (SOF) as an example. A SOF-modified magnetic separation medium (Fe3O4@POSS@SOF) was prepared, and a gradient elution strategy was employed and optimized to profile specific proteins interacted with SOF. A series of proteomic analyses were performed to profile proteins based on SOF-protein interactions (SPIs) in the serum of HCV patients to evaluate the specificity of the profiling strategy. As a result, five proteins were profiled with strong SPIs and exhibited high relevance with liver tissue, which were potentially new drug targets. Among them, HSP60 was used to confirm the highly specific interactions between the SOF and its binding proteins by Western blotting analysis. Besides, 124 and 29 differential proteins were profiled by SOF material from three HCV patient serum and pooled 20 HCV patient serum, respectively, by comparing with healthy human serum. In comparison with those profiled by the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) material, differential proteins profiled by the SOF material were highly associated with liver diseases through GO analysis and pathway analysis. Furthermore, four common differential proteins profiled by SOF material but not by POSS material were found to be identical and expressed consistently in both pooled serum samples and independent serum samples, which might potentially be biomarkers of HCV infection. Taken together, our study proposes a highly specific protein profiling strategy to display distinctive proteomic profiles, providing a novel idea for drug design and development.

Amphiphilic Azo-Functionalized Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane; Synthesis and Photo-Switched Efficient Phase Transfer via Host-Guest Encapsulation

A new amphiphilic azo-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) derivative was synthesized by functionalizing octa(3-aminopropyl)silsesquioxane (OAS-POSS) with 4-((4-(dodecyloxy)phenyl)diazenyl)benzoic acid, affording a hydrophilic amino POSS head and hydrophobic dodecyl tail with a diphenyl-azo connector. Prepared amphiphilic azo-functionalized POSS (azo-POSS) exhibited high ability for encapsulation and transferring cationic dyes into the organic phase by vigorously mixing with aqueous solutions of each dye. The photo-controlled encapsulating properties of the synthesized phase transfer reagent was studied using cationic dyes, such as methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV) and thymol blue in acidic conditions. Results showed more than 95 % encapsulation of MB. However, no considerable encapsulation was shown in the case of anionic dyes such as eriochrome black T (EBT) and thymol blue in alkaline solutions. By trans/cis isomerization of the azo moiety of the phase transfer reagent by UV irradiation (365 nm), the amount of dye encapsulation was decreased, which could be attributed to the formation of cis isomer that led to the folding of the dodecyl alkyl tail on the POSS moiety, and therefore prevent to lay the 3-aminopropyl moieties of POSS head to the water/DCM interface to adsorb and encapsulate MB molecules.

Cellulose-alginate hydrogels and their nanocomposites for water remediation and biomedical applications

In the last decade, both cellulose and alginate polysaccharides have been extensively utilized for the synthesis of biocompatible hydrogels because of their alluring characteristics like low cost, biodegradability, hydrophilicity, biodegradability, ease of availability and non-toxicity. The presence of abundant hydrophilic functional groups (like carboxyl and hydroxyl) on the surface of cellulose and alginate or their derivatives makes these materials promising candidates for the preparation of hydrogels with appealing structures and characteristics, leading to growing research in water treatment and biomedical fields. These two polysaccharides are typically blended together to improve hydrogels' desired qualities (mechanical strength, adsorption properties, cellulose/alginate yield). So, keeping in view their extensive applicability, in the present review article, recent advances in the development of cellulose/nanocellulose-alginate-based hydrogels and their relevance in water treatment (adsorption of dyes, heavy metals, etc.) and biomedical field (wound healing, tissue engineering, drug delivery) has been reviewed. Further, impact of other inorganic/organic additives in cellulose/nanocellulose-alginate-based hydrogels properties like contaminants adsorption, drug delivery, tissue engineering, etc., has also been studied. Moreover, the current difficulties and future prospects of nanocellulose-alginate-based hydrogels regarding their water purification and biomedical applications are also discussed at the end.

Recent Developments of Nano Flame Retardants for Unsaturated Polyester Resin

For many years, efforts have been made to reduce the flammability of unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs), which are often used in the rail, shipbuilding, and construction industries. Without modification, they often fail to meet fire safety standards. Despite a rich history of flame retardants (FRs) applied to UPRs, researchers seek new solutions that will provide lower flammability and smoke density, as well as attaining a lower environmental impact from the composites. The objective of the study is to highlight the most important recent research on promising nano FRs in order to promote their further development. Mechanisms of action of several groups of nano FRs, such as clay-based, carbon-based, transition metal compounds, layered double hydroxides, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes, and others, including bio-based, have been studied. Particular emphasis has been laid on nano FRs applied to UPRs, and their influences on thermal stability, flammability, and mechanical properties. Moreover, the environmental impact and toxicity of nano FRs have been discussed. Results have proved that nano FRs applied at low loadings may significantly improve thermal stability, with a simultaneous increase or only a slight decrease in mechanical properties. However, attention on related environmental issues has highlighted the necessity of carefully selecting novel nano FRs.

G-POSS connected double network starch gels for protein release

Starch is one of the most frequently preferred natural polymers in hydrogel synthesis. Herein, we combined two strategies of associating brittle and ductile networks in a structure and incorporating inorganic particles into the polymeric gel to design mechanically enhanced nanocomposite double network (DN) starch gels. For the first time in the literature, nanocomposite starch gels (s-NC) were designed by cross-linking starch chains with 8-armed glycidyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (g-POSS) units. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy analyses have proven that g-POSS is included in the gel structure and is homogeneously distributed throughout the network. More stable d-NC-DMA and d-NC-VP gels were obtained by incorporating N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA), or 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone (VP) units, respectively, into g-POSS-linked starch gels, and the reaction kinetics were followed in situ. In SEM images, it was observed that d-NC-DMA had smaller pores and thicker pore walls compared to s-NC and d-NC-VP starch gels, and its mechanical strength was shown to be much superior by rheological tests, compression, and tensile analyses. In addition to increasing the mechanical strength of the gels, the potential of starch in protein release applications using amylase sensitivity has been demonstrated in vitro experiments using the model protein BSA.

Encapsulation of cannabidiol in oil-in-water nanoemulsions and nanoemulsion-filled hydrogels: A structure and biological assessment study

HYPOTHESIS

Lipophilic cannabidiol can be solubilized in oil-in water nanoemulsions, which can then be impregnated into chitosan hydrogels forming another colloidal system that will facilitate cannabidiol's release. The delivery from both systems was compared, alongside structural and biological studies, to clarify the effect of the two carriers' structure on the release and toxicity of the systems.

EXPERIMENTS

Oil-in-water nanoemulsions (NEs) and the respective nanoemulsion-filled chitosan hydrogels (NE/HGs) were formulated as carriers of cannabidiol (CBD). Size, polydispersity and stability of the NEs were evaluated and then membrane dynamics, shape and structure of both systems were investigated with EPR spin probing, SAXS and microscopy. Biocompatibility of the colloidal delivery systems was evaluated through cytotoxicity tests over normal human skin fibroblasts. An ex vivo permeation protocol using porcine ear skin was implemented to assess the release of CBD and its penetration through the skin.

FINDINGS

Incorporation of the NEs in chitosan hydrogels does not significantly affect their structural properties as evidenced through SAXS, EPR and confocal microscopy. These findings indicate the successful development of a novel nanocarrier that preserves the NE structure with the CBD remaining encapsulated in the oil core while providing new rheological properties advantageous over NEs. Moreover, NE/HGs proved to be more efficient as a carrier for the release of CBD. Cell viability assessment revealed high biocompatibility of the proposed colloids.

A Brief Review on Selected Applications of Hybrid Materials Based on Functionalized Cage-like Silsesquioxanes

Rapid developments in materials engineering are accompanied by the equally rapid development of new technologies, which are now increasingly used in various branches of our life. The current research trend concerns the development of methods for obtaining new materials engineering systems and searching for relationships between the structure and physicochemical properties. A recent increase in the demand for well-defined and thermally stable systems has highlighted the importance of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) architectures. This short review focuses on these two groups of silsesquioxane-based materials and their selected applications. This fascinating field of hybrid species has attracted considerable attention due to their daily applications with unique capabilities and their great potential, among others, in biomaterials as components of hydrogel networks, components in biofabrication techniques, and promising building blocks of DDSQ-based biohybrids. Moreover, they constitute attractive systems applied in materials engineering, including flame retardant nanocomposites and components of the heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta-type catalytic system.

POSS and SSQ Materials in Dental Applications: Recent Advances and Future Outlooks

Recently, silsesquioxanes (SSQ) and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) have gained much interest in the area of biomaterials, mainly due to their intrinsic properties such as biocompatibility, complete non-toxicity, the ability to self-assemble and to form a porous structure, facilitating cell proliferation, creating a superhydrophobic surface, osteoinductivity, and ability to bind hydroxyapatite. All the above has resulted in new developments in medicine. However, the application of POSS-containing materials in dentistry is still at initial stage and deserves a systematic description to ensure future development. Significant problems, such as reduction of polymerization shrinkage, water absorption, hydrolysis rate, poor adhesion and strength, unsatisfactory biocompatibility, and corrosion resistance of dental alloys, can be addressed by the design of multifunctional POSS-containing materials. Because of the presence of silsesquioxanes, it is possible to obtain smart materials that allow the stimulation of phosphates deposition and repairing of micro-cracks in dental fillings. Hybrid composites result in materials exhibiting shape memory, as well as antibacterial, self-cleaning, and self-healing properties. Moreover, introducing POSS into polymer matrix allows for materials for bone reconstruction, and wound healing. This review covers the recent developments in the field of POSS application in dental materials and gives the future perspectives within a promising field of biomedical material science and chemical engineering.

Construction of Fluorescent Conjugated Polytriazole Containing Double-Decker Silsesquioxane: Click Polymerization and Thermal Stability

This study synthesized two azide-functionalized monomers through p-dichloro xylene and double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) units with NaN₃ to form DB-N₃ and DDSQ-N₃ monomers, respectively. In addition, five different propargyl-functionalized monomers were also prepared from hydroquinone, bisphenol A, bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)methanone, 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (then reacted with hydrazine hydrate solution) and 1,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene with propargyl bromide to form P-B, P-BPA, P-CO, P-NP, and P-TPE monomers, respectively. As a result, various DDSQ-based main chain copolymers could be synthesized using Cu(I)-catalyzed click polymerization through DDSQ-N₃ with different propargyl-functionalized monomers, of which the chemical structure and molecular weight could be confirmed by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analyses. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy analyses also could characterize the thermal stability, morphology, and optical behaviors of these DDSQ-based copolymers. All results indicate that the incorporation of an inorganic DDSQ cage could improve the thermal stability such as thermal decomposition temperature and char yield, because of the DDSQ dispersion homogeneously in the copolymer matrix, and this would then affect the optical properties of NP and TPE units in this work.

Synthesis of Multifunctional Oligomethylsilsesquioxanes by Catalyst-Free Hydrolytic Polycondensation of Methyltrimethoxysilane under Microwave Radiation

The catalyst-free hydrolytic polycondensation of methyltrimethoxysilane under microwave radiation has been studied. The effect of molar ratios of the reagents (MTMS/H₂O = 1/0.5-1/9), radiation power (20-300 W), temperature (30-50 °C) and duration of exposure (2.5-90 min) on the course of the process is considered. It has been shown that the use of microwave radiation promotes the activation of the process, and almost complete conversion of the monomer can be achieved in 5 min at 30 °C, 20 W and an MTMS/H₂O ratio of 1/3. The optimal radiation power for the maximum conversion of the monomer and MeO-groups is in the range from 20 to 100 W. An increase in the water amount, the duration and temperature of the process contribute to an increase in the monomer conversion, a decrease in the content of residual MeO-groups and the yield of non-volatile oligomethylsilsesquioxanes. The limits of this approach using to the synthesis of multifunctional branched polyorganosilsesquioxanes are determined. Depending on the process conditions, homogeneous water-alcohol solutions of oligomethylsilsesquioxane with a concentration of 20 to 50 wt.% can be obtained. The OH-group content and the molecular weight of the obtained oligomers vary from 10 to 30 wt.% and from 1000 to 600 Da, respectively.

Injectable self-healing chitosan-based POSS-PEG hybrid hydrogel as wound dressing to promote diabetic wound healing

Promoting the healing of diabetic wounds remains a major challenge in scientific research today. A star-like eight-arm cross-linker octafunctionalized POSS of benzaldehyde-terminated polyethylene glycol (POSS-PEG-CHO) was synthesized, and crosslinked with hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) via Schiff base reaction to obtain Chitosan-based POSS-PEG hybrid hydrogels. The designed composite hydrogels exhibited strong mechanical strength, injectability, excellent self-healing efficiency, good cytocompatibility and antibacterial properties. Furthermore, the composite hydrogels could accelerate cells migration and proliferation, as expected by remarkably promoting wound healing in diabetic mice. The wounds treated with the composite hydrogels displayed faster regeneration of epithelial tissue, fewer inflammatory cells, more collagen deposition and higher expression level of VEGF. Therefore, Chitosan-based POSS-PEG hybrid hydrogel has great application potential as a dressing for promoting the healing of diabetic wounds.

THE STUDY OF INTERMOLECULAR INTERACTIONS IN THE POSS-CONTAINING NANOCOMPOSITES BASED ON POLYURETHANE AND POLYURETHANE/POLY(HYDROXYPROPYL METHACRYLATE) MATRICES

The nanocomposites based on polyurethane matrix and multicomponent polymer matrices consisting of polyurethane and poly(hydroxypropyl methacrylate) with different contents of the last, and 1,2-propanediolisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (1,2-propanediolisobutyl-POSS), which was used as a functionalized nanofiller, were synthesized. The influence of the content of 1,2-propanediolisobutyl-POSS on intermolecular interactions and structural features of the nanocomposites was investigated by the method of IR-spectroscopy with Fourier transformation and attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR). The study of thermal curing of the model system, which consists of the adduct of trimethylolpropane with toluene diisocyanate and 1,2-propanediolisobutyl-POSS, made it possible to conclude that 1,2-propanediolisobutyl-POSS participates in the reaction of urethane formation using of one of the terminal hydroxyl groups, and it is incorporated into the polymer chain between cross-linking of polyurethane networks. The investigation of multicomponent polymer matrices by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy was done and was shown that photopolymerization of second polymer poly(hydroxypropyl methacrylate) in the matrix of polyurethane was completed by the opening of a double bond and the formation of a linear polymer in the composition of semi-IPN. Studies of nanocomposites based on multicomponent polymer matrices consisting of polyurethane and poly(hydroxypropyl methacrylate) with 15 and 30 % of the last by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy demonstrated the presence of POSS in the nanocomposites and the influence of POSS content on the structure of the studied systems and on the degree of phase separation. The POSS is "embedded" into the polymer chain between cross-linking of the polyurethane networks, with the additional formation of a complex system of intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the carboxyl and amine components of urethane groups in the nanocomposites.

The Use of the Thiol-Ene Addition Click Reaction in the Chemistry of Organosilicon Compounds: An Alternative or a Supplement to the Classical Hydrosilylation?

This review presents the main achievements in the use of the thiol-ene reaction in the chemistry of silicones. Works are considered, starting from monomers and ending with materials.The main advantages and disadvantages of this reaction are demonstrated using various examples. A critical analysis of the use of this reaction is made in comparison with the hydrosilylation reaction.

Surface Modification of Decellularized Heart Valve by the POSS-PEG Hybrid Hydrogel to Prepare a Composite Scaffold Material with Anticalcification Potential

Tissue-engineered heart valves (TEHVs) are the most promising replacement for heart valve transplantation. Decellularized heart valve (DHV) is one of the most common scaffold materials for TEHVs. In actual clinical applications, the most widely used method for treating DHV is cross-linking it with glutaraldehyde, but this method could cause serious problems such as calcification. In this study, we introduced polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles into a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogel to prepare a POSS-PEG hybrid hydrogel, and then coated them on the surface of DHV to prepare the composite scaffold. The chemical structures, microscopic morphologies, cell compatibilities, blood compatibilities, and anticalcification properties were further investigated. Experimental results showed that the composite scaffold had good blood compatibility and excellent cell compatibility and could promote cell adhesion and proliferation. In vivo and in vitro anticalcification experiments showed that the introduction of POSS nanoparticles could reduce the degree of calcification significantly and the composite scaffold had obvious anticalcification ability. The DHV surface-coated with the POSS-PEG hybrid hydrogel is an alternative scaffold material with anticalcification potential for an artificial heart valve, which provides an idea for the preparation of TEHVs.

Design of Fluorescent Hybrid Materials Based on POSS for Sensing Applications

Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) has a nanoscale silicon core and eight organic functional groups on the surface, with sizes from 0.7 to 1.5 nm. The three-dimensional nanostructures of POSS can be used to build all types of hybrid materials with specific performance and controllable nanostructures. The applications of POSS-based fluorescent materials have spread across various fields. In particular, the employment of POSS-based fluorescent materials in sensing application can achieve high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. As a result, POSS-based fluorescent materials are attracting increasing attention due to their fascinating vistas, including unique structural features, easy fabrication, and tunable optical properties by molecular design. Here, we summarize the current available POSS-based fluorescent materials from design to sensing applications. In the design section, we introduce synthetic strategies and structures of the functionalized POSS-based fluorescent materials, as well as photophysical properties. In the application section, the typical POSS-based fluorescent materials used for the detection of various target objects are summarized with selected examples to elaborate on their wide applications.

Highly Sensitive Photopolymer for Holographic Data Storage Containing Methacryl Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane

Herein, via introducing eight methacryl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (Ma-POSS), we dramatically enhance the holographic performance of phenanthraquinone-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PQ/PMMA) photopolymer with excellent characteristics of high sensitivity, high diffraction efficiency, and neglectable volume shrinkage for holographic data storage, the photosensitivity, diffraction efficiency, and volume shrinkage reaching 1.47 cm/J, ∼75%, and ∼0.09%, respectively. Ma-POSS here dramatically enhances the photosensitivity ∼5.5 times, diffraction efficiency more than 50%, and suppressed the volume shrinkage over 4 times. Further analysis reveals that Ma-POSS obviously increased the molecular weight by grafting PMMA to be a star-shaped macromolecule. And the residual C═C of POSS-PMMA dramatically increased the photosensitivity. Moreover, the star-shaped POSS-PMMA acting as a plasticizer dramatically enhances the mechanical properties and so reduces the photoinduced volume shrinkage of PQ/PMMA. Finally, by the use of the POSS-PMMA/PQ in a collinear holography system, it appeared to be promising for a fast but low bit error rate in holographic information storage. The current study thence has not only successfully synthesized photopolymer materials with potential for highly sensitive holographic storage applications but also investigated the microphysical mechanism of the impact of Ma-POSS on the holographic properties of PQ/PMMA photopolymer and clarified the thermal- and photoreaction processes of the POSS-PMMA/PQ photopolymer.

Self-Healing Silsesquioxane-Based Materials

This review is devoted to self-healing materials (SHM) containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) as building blocks. The synthetic approach can vary depending on the role POSS are expected to play in a given system. POSS (especially double-decker silsesquioxanes) can be grafted in side chains of a polymer backbone or used as segments of the main chain. Appropriate functionalization allows the formation of dynamic bonds with POSS molecules and makes them an active component of SHM, both as crosslinking agents and as factors that enhance the dynamics of macromolecules in the polymer matrix. The latter effect can be achieved by reversible release of bulky POSS cages or by the formation of separated inclusions in the polymer matrix through hydrophobic interactions and POSS aggregation. The unique properties of POSS-based self-healing systems make them interesting and versatile materials for various applications (e.g., repairable coatings, sealants, sensors, soft materials for tissue engineering, drug delivery, and wound healing).

Current and Future Prospective of Injectable Hydrogels-Design Challenges and Limitations

Injectable hydrogels (IHs) are smart biomaterials and are the most widely investigated and versatile technologies, which can be either implanted or inserted into living bodies with minimal invasion. Their unique features, tunable structure and stimuli-responsive biodegradation properties make these IHs promising in many biomedical applications, including tissue engineering, regenerative medicines, implants, drug/protein/gene delivery, cancer treatment, aesthetic corrections and spinal fusions. In this review, we comprehensively analyze the current development of several important types of IHs, including all those that have received FDA approval, are under clinical trials or are available commercially on the market. We also analyze the structural chemistry, synthesis, bonding, chemical/physical crosslinking and responsive release in association with current prospective research. Finally, we also review IHs' associated future prospects, hurdles, limitations and challenges in their development, fabrication, synthesis, in situ applications and regulatory affairs.

A sulfur-containing fluorescent hybrid porous polymer for selective detection and adsorption of Hg2+ ions

A dual-function material, that is, a sulfur-containing fluorescent hybrid porous polymer, has been simply prepared and utilized to simultaneously detect and capture Hg2+ with high efficiency and selectivity.

Use of Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane (POSS) in Drug Delivery, Photodynamic Therapy and Bioimaging

Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) have attracted considerable attention in the design of novel organic-inorganic hybrid materials with high performance capabilities. Features such as their well-defined nanoscale structure, chemical tunability, and biocompatibility make POSS an ideal building block to fabricate hybrid materials for biomedical applications. This review highlights recent advances in the application of POSS-based hybrid materials, with particular emphasis on drug delivery, photodynamic therapy and bioimaging. The design and synthesis of POSS-based materials is described, along with the current methods for controlling their chemical functionalization for biomedical applications. We summarize the advantages of using POSS for several drug delivery applications. We also describe the current progress on using POSS-based materials to improve photodynamic therapies. The use of POSS for delivery of contrast agents or as a passivating agent for nanoprobes is also summarized. We envision that POSS-based hybrid materials have great potential for a variety of biomedical applications including drug delivery, photodynamic therapy and bioimaging.

Synthesis of Functionalized Silsesquioxane Nanomaterials by Rhodium-Catalyzed Carbene Insertion into Si-H bonds

We report carbene insertion into Si-H bonds of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) for the synthesis of highly functionalized siloxane nanomaterials. Dirhodium(II) carboxylates catalyze insertion of aryl-diazoacetates as carbene precursors to afford POSS structures containing both ester and aryl groups as orthogonal functional handles for further derivatization of POSS materials. Four diverse and structurally varied silsesquioxane core scaffolds with one, three, or eight Si-H bonds were evaluated with diazo reactants to produce a total of 20 new POSS compounds. Novel diazo compounds containing a fluorinated octyl group and boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) chromophore demonstrate the use of highly functionalized substrates. Transformations of aryl(ester)-functionalized POSS compounds derived from this method are demonstrated, including ester hydrolysis and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling.

Stabilization Effects of Natural Compounds and Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane Nanoparticles on the Accelerated Degradation of Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Monomer

In this work the analysis on the stabilization activities of some natural antioxidants (rosemary extract, capsaicin, quercetin or oleanolic acid) is presented. A similar contribution of an inorganic structure-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles-is also evaluated. The stabilization effects on the oxidation protection were investigated for several formulations based on ethylene-propylene-diene-terpolymer (EPDM). The samples were examined in pristine state or after γ-irradiation, when the accelerated degradation scission of polymer macromolecules followed by the mitigation of oxidation. Three evaluation procedures: chemiluminescence, FTIR spectroscopy and thermal analysis were applied for the characterization of stability efficiency. The delaying effect of oxidative aging in EPDM matrix is illustrated by the values of activation energy, which are correlated with the type and concentration of embedded compounds. The durability of studied EPDM formulations is discussed for the assessment of material life. The improved behavior of structured hybrids useful for the optimization application regimes is essentially based on the antioxidant properties of polyphenolic components in the cases of natural antioxidants or on the penetration of free radical intermediates into the free volumes of POSS.

Polymerization Enhancers for Cyanoacrylate Skin Adhesive

Cyanoacrylate glues are a renowned synthetic tissue sealant that cures rapidly through polymerization at room temperature, felicitating medical glues to treat skin wounds and surgical openings. Despite a wide range of cyanoacrylates available, only 2-octyl cyanoacrylates (OCA) provides the best biocompatibility. In this study, the polymerization and adhesive properties of 2-octyl cyanoacrylates (OCA) are explored in the presence of a highly biocompatible and biochemically inert polymer, poly(ethylene glycol) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (PEG-POSS). The effect of PEG-POSS on the polymerization of OCA is examined on a plastic surface and over pig skin. A peel-test is performed to evaluate the strength of OCA adhesive properties between two pieces of pig skin samples. Additionally, thin films of OCA are prepared using different fillers and evaluated for tear test. The results reveal that when applied on the plastic or pig skin, PEG-POSS initiated polymerization in OCA yields a high molecular weight OCA polymer with much better adhesive properties compared to commercially available cyanoacrylate adhesives. The relative change in the molecular weights of OCA compared to commercially available cyanoacrylate bioadhesives such as Dermaflex is much higher. The pig skin peeling test shows that OCA needs higher peeling force than Dermaflex.

Kinetic Analysis on the Stabilization Effects of Substituted POSS Powders Embedded in γ-Radiolyzed Polypropylene

The present paper proposes a reliable alternative for the increasing stability of polypropylene (PP) by modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS). The chemiluminescence measurements and FTIR records point complementarily out the determinant influence of substituents on the progress of oxidation during the accelerated degradation caused by γ-irradiation. The main kinetic approach of oxidation acting in radiation-induced aging recommends some of the studied structures of modified POSS as appropriate compounds for improving stability of polypropylene at low additive concentration. The analysis of the present results is based on the implication of substituted POSS, whose contribution to the limitation of oxidation is conditioned by the influence of substituents. The delay of the oxidative degradation in studied γ-irradiated polypropylene is the consequence of the interaction between molecular PP fragments and the silanol moieties generated during radiolysis, which are the most vulnerable points of POSS structure.
