Abstract
This study explored the effect of weight change on successful aging in older adults. A total of 1865 adults (≥65 years) were divided into the weight gain group (weight gain ≥5 %), the weight loss group (weight loss ≥5 %), and the weight stable group (weight change <5 %) according to weight changes over 4 years. Results showed that compared to the stable weight, the weight loss is associated with a lower rate of successful aging (OR=0.64, 95 % CI: 0.49-0.83), and the association was found greater in women (OR=0.61, 95 % CI: 0.43-0.86) and young-old adults (OR=0.66, 95 % CI: 0.41-0.88) than their counterparts. However, no significant association was found between weight gain and successful aging. The findings suggest that weight loss rather than weight gain in older adults has a detrimental impact on successful aging, and this detrimental impact is greater in women and young-old adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate whether social, familial and personal factors can predict incident and prevalent depressive symptoms in Chinese adults aged ≥ 45 years using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). METHODS Study subjects without depressive symptoms from CHARLS at baseline were enrolled. Depressive symptoms were defined by the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Statistical adjustment, subgroup exploration and unmeasured confounding assessment were undertaken to derive reliable estimates. RESULTS 1681 (27.04%) of 6215 subjects who had no depressive symptoms in 2011, suffered one or more depressive symptoms in 2018. Multivariate analyses showed that number of grandchildren (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 1.06 [1.02, 1.10]), social activity score (0.95 [0.91, 0.98]), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) (1.35 [1.11, 1.65]) and number of comorbidities (1.16 [1.10, 1.22]) were independently and significantly associated with the presence of incident depressive symptoms. Further categorization revealed significance for social activity score (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 0.78 [0.69, 0.89] and 0.71 [0.53, 0.95] for 1-5 and > 5 vs. 0), IADL (1.35 [1.11, 1.65] for yes vs. no) and number of comorbidities (1.38 [1.20, 1.58], 1.44 [1.16, 1.81] and 2.42 [1.54, 3.80] for 1-2, 3-4 and > 4 vs. 0) associated with incident depressive symptoms. Restricting analysis to wave IV data in 2018 observed significant association of number of grandchildren, social activity score, IADL and number of comorbidities with prevalent depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS The present study findings support the marked contribution of social activity score, IADL and number of comorbidities to incident and prevalent depressive symptoms in Chinese middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
Background Anxiety and depression are serious psychological and public health issues among the older adults. Currently, there is a lack of understanding of the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and anxiety or depression symptoms in the older adult population in China. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of BMI on anxiety and depression through correlation analysis in different subgroups and to examine the potential chain mediating effects of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) between BMI and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Methods From the CLHLS database conducted in 2017-2018, data regarding height, weight, anxiety symptoms, depression symptoms, as well as demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral, and health-related characteristics were collected. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to explore the impact of BMI on anxiety and depression symptoms. Finally, the SPSS macro process was utilized to test the multiple mediating effects of ADL and IADL between BMI and anxiety or depression symptoms. Results After screening, a final sample of 9,098 Chinese older adult individuals aged 65 and above was selected. Among them, 1,074 cases (11.8%) exhibited anxiety symptoms, 1,458 cases (16.0%) exhibited depressive symptoms. Compared to normal BMI, the adjusted analysis showed that underweight in Chinese older adult individuals was significantly associated with anxiety (OR = 1.316, p = 0.004) and depression (OR = 1.232, p = 0.013). This relationship was found to be more significant in males, individuals aged 80 and above, unmarried individuals, and those residing in town. ADL and IADL played a chain-mediated role between BMI and anxiety symptoms in the older adult. BMI not only had a direct effect on anxiety symptoms in the older adult (effect = -0.0159; SE = 0.0066; 95%CI: LL = -0.0288, UL = -0.0031), but also influenced them indirectly through two pathways: the independent mediating role of IADL (effect = -0.0010; SE = 0.0005; 95%CI: LL = -0.0018, UL = -0.0003) and the chain-mediated role of ADL and IADL (effect = -0.0012; SE = 0.0004; 95%CI: LL = -0.0020, UL = -0.0006). Conclusion In the older adult individuals in China, underweight is associated with an increased risk of anxiety and depression symptoms. Improving the underweight condition of Chinese older adult individuals can reduce their ADL and IADL limitations, thereby benefiting their mental health.

Abstract
Importance Overweight and obesity affect 340 million adolescents worldwide and constitute a risk factor for poor mental health. Understanding the association between body mass index (BMI) and mental health in adolescents may help to address rising mental health issues; however, existing studies lack comprehensive evaluations spanning diverse countries and periods. Objective To estimate the association between BMI and mental health and examine changes over time from 2002 to 2018. Design, Setting, and Participants This was a repeated multicountry cross-sectional study conducted between 2002 and 2018 and utilizing data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey in Europe and North America. The study population consisted of more than 1 million adolescents aged 11 to 15 years, with all surveyed children included in the analysis. Data were analyzed from October 2022 to March 2023. Main Outcomes and Measures Mental health difficulties were measured by an 8-item scale for psychological concerns, scoring from 0 to 32, where a higher score reflects greater psychosomatic issues. BMI was calculated using weight divided by height squared and adjusted for age and sex. Data were fitted by multilevel generalized additive model. Confounders included sex, living with parents, sibling presence, academic pressure, the experience of being bullied, family affluence, screen time, and physical activity. Results Our analysis of 1 036 869 adolescents surveyed from 2002 to 2018, with a mean (SD) age of 13.55 (1.64) years and comprising 527 585 girls (50.9%), revealed a consistent U-shaped association between BMI and mental health. After accounting for confounders, adolescents with low body mass and overweight or obesity had increased psychosomatic symptoms compared to those with healthy weight (unstandardized β, 0.14; 95% CI, 0.08 to 0.19; unstandardized β, 0.27; 95% CI, 0.24 to 0.30; and unstandardized β, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.56 to 0.67, respectively), while adolescents with underweight had fewer symptoms (unstandardized β, -0.18; 95% CI, -0.22 to -0.15). This association was observed across different years, sex, and grade, indicating a broad relevance to adolescent mental health. Compared to 2002, psychosomatic concerns increased significantly in 2006 (unstandardized β, 0.19; 95% CI, 0.11 to 0.26), 2010 (unstandardized β, 0.14; 95% CI, 0.07 to 0.22), 2014 (unstandardized β, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.40 to 0.56), and 2018 (unstandardized β, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.74 to 0.89). Girls reported significantly higher psychosomatic concerns than boys (unstandardized β, 2.27; 95% CI, 2.25 to 2.30). Compared to primary school, psychosomatic concerns rose significantly in middle school (unstandardized β, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.12 to 1.18) and in high school (unstandardized β, 2.12; 95% CI, 2.09 to 2.15). Conclusions and Relevance Our study revealed a U-shaped association between adolescent BMI and mental health, which was consistent across sex and grades and became stronger over time. These insights emphasize the need for targeted interventions addressing body image and mental health, and call for further research into underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES This study employed longitudinal data collected repeatedly from individuals over the course of several years to examine the trajectories of social jetlag from ages 11 to 22 years and their associations with subsequent body mass index (BMI). Potential sex differences were also investigated. METHODS Data were obtained from two longitudinal studies conducted in Taiwan (N = 4287). Social jetlag was defined as ≥ 2 hours of absolute difference in sleep midpoint between weekdays and weekends. BMI was calculated using weight (kg)/height(m)2 and categorized as underweight (<18 kg/m2), normal weight (18 kg/m2 ≤ BMI < 24 kg/m2), overweight (24 kg/m2 ≤ BMI < 27 kg/m2), and obese (≥27 kg/m2). Group-based trajectory modeling and multinomial logistic regression were applied to investigate study objectives. RESULTS Four distinct trajectories of social jetlag throughout the adolescent years were identified, with corresponding proportions as follows: low-stable (42%), moderate-decreasing (19%), low-increasing (22%), and chronic (17%) trajectories. Among males, the risk of being underweight (aOR, 1.96; 95% CI: 1.35 to 2.84) or obese (aOR, 1.40; 95% CI: 1.02 to 1.92) was higher in individuals with a low-increasing trajectory than in those with a low-stable trajectory. Among females, those with a low-increasing (aOR, 1.61; 95% CI: 1.02 to 2.54) or chronic (aOR, 2.04; 95% CI: 1.27 to 3.25) trajectory were at a higher risk of being obese relative to those with a low-stable trajectory. CONCLUSIONS Addressing the development of increasing or chronic social jetlag during adolescence can help prevent abnormal BMI in young adulthood. Practitioners should consider sex differences in treatment or consultation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review aimed to evaluate the association between childhood adiposity and depression and anxiety risk in adulthood. METHODS MEDLINE, PsychInfo, Embase, CINAHL, and Scopus were searched on June 6, 2022, to identify studies that investigated the association between childhood weight status (age ≤18 years) and outcomes of depression and/or anxiety in adulthood (age ≥19 years). Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and results were narratively synthesized. RESULTS Sixteen studies were eligible for inclusion, with heterogeneity in methods and follow-up durations complicating comparisons. Six out of eight studies found a statistically significant association between childhood adiposity and increased likelihood of depression in adulthood, particularly in females. However, overall evidence was of moderate quality and study limitations prevented causal conclusions. In contrast, limited evidence and mixed findings were reported for the associations between childhood adiposity and depressive symptom severity or anxiety outcomes in adulthood. CONCLUSIONS Evidence suggests that childhood adiposity is associated with greater vulnerability to depression in adulthood, particularly in females. However, further research is warranted to address the limitations discussed. Future research should also explore how changes in weight status from childhood to adulthood might differentially influence the likelihood of depression.

Abstract
Background Studies examining weight change patterns and depression are scarce and report inconsistent findings. This study-aimed to elucidate the association between weight change patterns and the risk of depression in a large, representative sample of US adults. Methods Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018 was analyzed. Five weight change groups were categorized: stable normal, weight loss, weight gain, maximum overweight, and stable obesity. Depression was ascertained using the validated Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and depression was defined as PHQ score ≥ 10. Results A total of 17,556 participants were included. Compared with participants who maintained normal weight, stable obesity participants had increased risks of depression across adulthood from age 25 years to 10 years before the survey (OR = 1.61, 95% CI =1.23 to 2.11), in the 10 years period before the survey (OR = 2.15, 95% CI =1.71 to 2.70), and from age 25 years to survey (OR = 1.88, 95% CI =1.44 to 2.44). Weight gain was associated with an increased risk of depression from age 25 years to 10 years before the survey (OR = 1.71, 95% CI = 1.41 to 2.04), in the 10 years period before the survey (OR = 1.73, 95% CI = 1.35 to 2.21), and for the period from age 25 years to survey (OR = 1.83, 95% CI = 1.49 to 2.24). In the stratified analyses, we found statistically significant interactions with sex. Conclusion Our study suggested that stable obesity and weight gain across adulthood were associated with increased risks of depression.

Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to determine the risk factors for undernutrition in community-dwelling older adults in Guadeloupe (Caribbean islands). Methods: We used data from the KArukera Study of Aging-Drugs Storage (KASADS), an observational cross-sectional study of community-dwelling older people living in Guadeloupe. The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was used to assess the risk of undernutrition. An MNA-short form (SF) score ≤11 defined the risk of undernutrition. Depression was assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) scale, cognitive function was assessed using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), frailty was assessed using the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures index (SOF), and dependency was assessed using Lawton's instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) scale. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine the correlates of undernutrition. Results: The study sample comprised 115 patients aged 65 years or older; 67.8% were women, and the mean age was 76 ± 7.8 years. The prevalence of undernutrition was 21.7% (95% CI = 15.2-30.1%). In our bivariate analysis, the risk of undernutrition was associated with MMSE score, IADL score, frailty, and CES-D score. We found no significant relation between nutrition risk and other variables, such as marital status, pain, or polypharmacy. In the multivariate analysis, the factors associated with the risk of undernutrition were MMSE score (Odd-Ratio (OR): 0.74 (0.58-0.97)) and CES-D score (OR: 1.13 (1.02-1.27)). Conclusions: Cognitive decline and the risk of depression were independently associated with the risk of undernutrition in community-dwelling older people in Guadeloupe. Although we cannot imply causality in this relation, the detection of these three key geriatric syndromes in community-dwelling elders is essential to prevent adverse health outcomes. Further studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

Abstract
This study explored the relationship between adolescents’ weight status and mental health problems. It specifically investigated the weight perceptions of obese adolescents and the effect on their mental health. This cross-sectional study was based on the data of adolescents aged 12–18 years from the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (2010–2019). Data regarding anthropometric measurements, health conditions, and socioeconomic status were extracted, and the associations between weight status (actual, perceived, or misperceived) and mental health conditions (depressed mood, perceived stress, and suicidal ideation) were analyzed using complex sample multiple logistic regression after adjusting for possible confounders. A total of 5683 adolescents (53.1% boys and 46.9% girls) were included in this study, with a mean age of 15.1 years. Among the participants, actual, perceived, and misperceived status of being overweight were observed in 20.8%, 32.7%, and 18.4%, respectively. Additionally, depressed mood, perceived stress, and suicidal ideation were observed in 9.1%, 25.7%, and 7.4% of Korean adolescents, respectively, with higher prevalences in girls for all three conditions. Actual weight status was not significantly associated with mental health conditions in either sex. Furthermore, girls who perceived themselves to be overweight, regardless of their actual body weight, or who had overestimated their actual weight were more likely to have experienced depressed mood and stress, while boys who perceived themselves to be underweight were more likely to have experienced suicidal ideation than participants with an average weight perception or an accurate recognition of their weight status. Conversely, in overweight/obese participants, perceived weight status was not associated with mental health conditions. In conclusion, perceived weight status and its discrepancy with actual body weight were more strongly associated with an increased risk of mental health problems than actual weight status itself among Korean adolescents. Therefore, adolescents’ perceptions of their body image and weight-related attitude should be assessed to promote their mental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies, predominantly in Western individuals, have reported weight gain or weight loss are related to the increased depressive symptoms at all ages, but no study of depressive symptoms has examined its relation to actual (not just self-reported) weight changes in the middle-aged and older adults. Evidence of the relationship in older Asian individuals remains sparse. The study aimed to examine the relationship between weight changes and incidence of depressive symptoms in a nationally representative sample of community-dwelling older Asians. METHOD Data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), which included 17,284 adults aged 45 years. Participants were followed every two years using a face-to-face, computer-aided personal interview (CAPI) and structured questionnaire. We excluded participants with no follow-up data. The numbers of individuals who completed both the baseline and follow-up surveys were 3118 for the short-term (two years from 2011-2013) and the long-term (four years from 2011-2015). Additionally, to associate weight change with subsequent depressive symptoms, we also included 2472 participants without depressive symptom in 2013 and observed the incidence of depressive symptom in 2015 (subsequent term from 2013-2015). Finally, weight changes were classified as loss > -3%, stable-3-3%, gain3-6%, gain6-9%, and gain > 9%. Multivariable-adjusted cox regression in the study were used to assess the hazard ratios (HRs) of each weight change category. RESULTS The incidence of depressive symptoms was 20.72% in the 2011-2013, 27.04% in the 2011-2015, and 23.02% in 2013-2015. Weight loss > 3% for all intervals was associated with higher depressive symptoms than stable weight during the 2011-2013 [1.305(1.031,1.651)] among the total populations. When stratified by sex, the results in males and females were different from those in the total population [females:1.389(0.997, 1.935); males:1.263(0.902, 1.767)]. Weight loss > 3% for intervals was associated with higher depressive symptoms than stable weight during the 2013-2015[1.643(1.140, 2.368)] among the males and its effect was also stronger for the total in 2011-2013. Moreover, there was no significant association between weight gain and incident depressive symptom, and no significant interaction effect in terms of the sex*weight changes. CONCLUSION Our findings could inform health promotion interventions to body-weight management aimed at improving the health of the middle-aged and older adults, particularly in the total people with short-term weight loss and males with subsequent term weight loss.

Abstract
Objective More than 2 billion women are experiencing menopause transition in China and some of them suffered from depression; while the risk factors of depression during menopause transition were still unclearin China. We aimed to investigate the risk factors in mid-life women in Southeast China.
Method This study included 1748 Chinese women aged 40–65 years-old who visited gynecology outpatient department of Women’s hospital School of Medicine, Zhejiang University during 2010–2018. Demographic information was collected, and the modified Kupperman Menopausal Index (mKMI) and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression were assessed. Circulating levels of sex hormones were tested. Ordinal logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors for depression. Results The prevalence of depression symptoms was 47.43%. The majority of women had mild (38.56%) or moderate depressive symptoms (8.00%); only 0.86% had severe depressive symptoms. Compared with perimenopausal women, postmenopausal women had increased risks of more severe depression. The associations between menopausal syndromes and the intensity of depression were strongly positive (OR 6.69, 95% CI 5.39–8.29). Elder age, higher follicle stimulating hormone levels, lower estradiol levels, and fewer parity were positively related with the intensity of depression. Among postmenopausal women, underweight, mKMI > 14, earlier age at menopause, shorter reproductive period, and longer duration after menopause were risk factors for incresed intensity of depression. Conclusions The results demonstrated a high proportion of depression in women complaining of menopause. Menopausal symptoms were strongly related to the intensity of depression. In postmenopausal women, estrogen related events are associated with the intensity of depression. Gynecological endocrinologists in China should consider screening for depression in high-risk women. Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is one of the most common diseases in the world, and severe depression is the second leading cause of disability in the world. However, the relationship between depressive symptoms and body mass index (BMI) is still unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between BMI and depressive symptoms. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 35,407 participants, all data collected from NHANES 2005-2018. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between depressive symptoms (outcome variables) and BMI levels (independent variables). The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was the primary measure of depressive symptoms. We also performed sensitivity analyses, including multiple sensitivity analyses. RESULTS After adjusting for covariates, the ORS (95 % CI) of depressive symptoms from the lowest to the highest levels of BMI were 1.14 (1.00-1.30), 1.00 (Reference), 1.19 (1.05-1.35) and 1.45 (1.29-1.64), respectively. However, stratified analysis and sensitivity analysis showed that there was no U-shaped relationship between non-Hispanic black race and depressive symptoms. LIMITATION Self-reporting questionnaire may lead to recall bias or reporting bias; Cross-sectional studies failed to verify causality. CONCLUSION There is a U-shaped relationship between depression and BMI. However, no such relationship was found among non-Hispanic blacks. More researches are needed to confirm the relationship between weight and depression, as well as the causal relationship between them.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although depression and body weight have been noted as important predictors of cognitive health, it remains unclear how age and sex influence the mechanism by which depressive symptoms and body weight are associated with cognitive functioning. This study examined whether and how the relationships between depressive symptoms and cognitive functioning mediated by body mass index (BMI) differ in terms of age and sex. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis of a large sample of population-based data (N = 5,619; mean age 70.73 [± 9.07]), derived from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging, was conducted with hierarchical mediated-moderation regressions and a PROCESS macro approach in SPSS. Depressive symptoms were measured through the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) scale, and cognitive functioning was assessed with the Korean Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE). RESULTS The results showed that depressive symptoms were significantly associated with cognitive decline directly and indirectly through reduced BMI. The estimated coefficients indicated that a one standard deviation increase in CES-D scale was associated with about 0.9 decrease in K-MMSE score. However, the indirect relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive function through BMI emerged only in men or individuals older than 70 years. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that a careful assessment of BMI is warranted for early detection and prevention of cognitive decline related to depressive symptoms, particularly among older men.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the association between visual impairment (VI) and psychological distress (PD) among older adults in Taiwan. The present cohort study included participants aged >65 years who participated in a physical examination program. Participants were divided into two groups on the basis of whether they had PD at baseline. The association between PD and VI with other variables was compared using the two-sample t-test for continuous variables and chi-squared test for discrete variables. Cox regression analyses were used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR). Cumulative incidence of PD was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method, and differences among participants with different severities of VI were analyzed using the two-tailed log-rank test. Subgroup analyses were performed to calculate the HR for PD among participants with different severities of VI. The PD group showed a significantly high percentage of VI. In addition, participants with VI showed a significantly higher HR and seven-year cumulative incidence rate of PD than those without VI. VI was independently and significantly associated with a higher incidence of PD among older Asian people. Therefore, identifying and treating correctible VI is important to prevent PD and improve the overall quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressive symptoms can affect people's quality of life and social environment. In addition, in severe situations, they can lead to suicidal behaviors. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to analyze the differences in depressive symptoms in underweight and obese Peruvian adults. METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out based on secondary data obtained from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística e Informática (INEI), Lima, Peru. A sample of 10 053 participants was considered, of which 55.96% were women. Two Gaussian plot models were estimated and the levels of depressive symptomatology were compared between the 2 groups (adults with underweight and obese). RESULTS A total of 1510 (15.02%) were underweight adults and 8543 (84.98%) were obese adults. There were differences in the reporting of depressive symptoms in the underweight group; the most central items were "Depressed mood" (PH2), "Tiredness/low energy" (PH4), and "Psychomotor difficulties" (PH8). CONCLUSION This study provides new evidence on the dynamic relationship between depressive symptoms according to the body mass index categories (underweight and obese) assessed.

Abstract
Depression is one of the major disease burdens worldwide. Few studies have addressed body mass index (BMI) in Chinese depression patients. This current study aimed to investigate the BMI in patients with depression and the correlation with clinical factors. A total of 211 inpatients with first-episode depression were enrolled. General and clinical data were collected by standardized questionnaires and the levels of hemoglobin, fasting blood glucose, uric acid, and blood lipid were measured. In total, 24-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) and 14-item Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) were rated for all the patients. The BMI of 211 patients with depression was 37 (17.5%) in the underweight group, 117 (55.5%) in the normal-weight group, 43 (20.4%) in the overweight group, and 14 (6.6%) in the obesity group. Multivariate logistic analysis showed that uric acid was the only risk factor for BMI. The ordered logit model showed that the risk of elevated uric acid increased with BMI grade. And the risk of severe depression was significantly greater in patients with underweight than those in normal-weight. The level of uric acid in patients with first-episode depression is positively correlated with BMI, and the score of depressive symptoms is higher in patients with underweight.

Adolescence represents an important period in brain and mental development, which raises the question of whether measures of body size at entry into adult life influence the risk of developing mood disorders. The study included 630,807 Danish men born 1939-1959 and 1983-1997 with measures of height and weight at conscription board examinations. Psychiatrist's diagnosis of mood disorders was obtained from national patient registries from 1969 to 2016. The associations of BMI and height with mood disorders were estimated by Cox proportional hazard regression analyses adjusting for education, cognitive ability, migration status drug and alcohol misuse. During a mean follow-up of 26.3 years, 2,608 (0.6%) and 19,690 (3.1%) men were diagnosed with bipolar disorder and depression, respectively. We found an inverse linear association of BMI with risk of bipolar disorder, whereas the association of BMI with depression was curve-linear with a decline in risk until BMI around 25 kg/m2, and an almost constant risk across the BMI range above 25 kg/m2. Height was not associated with bipolar disorder or depression. Comparison of brothers, assumed to share family factors of possible influence on the risk of mood disorders, showed similar results although with wider confidence intervals. BMI in the lower range at men's entry into adulthood is inversely associated with risk of bipolar disorder and depression throughout adult life, whereas height is not related.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Obesity and overweight are common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD); the results are inconsistent due to confounding variables involved in studies. Furthermore, no well-designed study has been published to investigate the prevalence, risk factors and underlying mechanisms of obesity/overweight in Chinese MDD patients. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of obesity/overweight and related risk factors in first-episode, drug-naïve (FEDN) patients with MDD in China. METHODS A total of 1718 patients were recruited. Their clinical and anthropometric data, thyroid function and biochemical parameters were collected. All patients were evaluated on the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, 14-item Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. RESULTS The prevalence of obesity and overweight was 3.73% and 56.00%, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that TSH was the only independent risk factor for weight gain in MDD patents. The fitting curve of the relationship between TSH and BMI formed an inverted U-shaped parabola. The ordinal logit mode showed that when TSH<=2.68 was set as a reference, the odd rates of weight increased with the increase of TSH, and the highest rate was 3.929 (95%CI: 2.879-5.361, P<0.0001). LIMITATION Causality cannot be drawn due to cross-sectional design. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that overweight is very common among patients with FEDN MDD rather than obesity. TSH is a promising predictor and potential biomarker of high weight in MDD patients, and there is an inverted U-shaped parabolic relationship between TSH and BMI.

Abstract
Background Obesity or underweight has been found to be associated with depression, but the relationship remains to be determined so that more precise prevention strategies can be implemented. Body mass index (BMI) and waist–height ratio (WHR) were used as indicators to study the dose–response relationship between depression and obesity or underweight. Methods We obtained basic information and disease-related data for 13,975 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005–2016 dataset. The depressive status was determined based on the PHQ-9 scale (>4). Logistic regression was used to analyze the association and risk of BMI, WHTR and depressive status. Based on the results of logistic regression, the dose–response relationship between BMI, WHTR and depressive state was analyzed using restricted cubic splines (RCS). Results The adjusted model showed that compared with the fourth quartile (Q4) of BMI, the odds ratios (ORs) of depression for Q1, Q2 and Q3 were 0.63 (0.56–0.71), 0.61 (0.54–0.68) and 0.74 (0.66–0.82), and compared with the fourth quartile (Q4) of WHtR, the odds ratios (ORs) of depression for Q1, Q2 and Q3 were 0.55 (0.49–0.62), 0.57 (0.51–0.64) and 0.64 (0.57–0.71), respectively. The restricted cubic spline regression depicted a U-shaped dose–response relationship between continuous changes of obesity indicators and the risk of depression (P1, P2 < 0.001). When the participants’ BMI reached approximately 25kg/m2 with the reference value of BMI was 18.5kg/m2, the risk of depression was minimized (OR=0.68, 95% Cl=0.56–0.83). When the WHtR reached approximately 0.52 with the reference value of WHtR was 0.40, the risk of depression was minimized (OR=0.69, 95% Cl=0.54–0.88). Conclusion We found a significant U-shape correlation between BMI, WHtR and depression. People with slight overweight have the lowest risk of depression. However, according to the International Obesity standards, the population at these levels of weight may have an obesity-chronic disease risk, and this is not recommended.

Abstract
Background Depression and overweight are serious public health problems and the most common complications of childbearing age with many negative consequences on the mental health of women and their children in the world. Even though both have a serious impact, no study has been done in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess and compare the prevalence of depression and associated factors among normal and overweight reproductive-age women in Debre Berhan town. Methods A community-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted from April– June 2020. Patient health questionnaire-9 was used to measure the level of depression and list of threatening experience for stressful life events. Body mass index values of 18.5–24.9 and 25–29.9 kg/m2 were used to classify as normal, and overweight, respectively. The data were entered into Epi Data V. 4.6 and were analyzed using SPSS V. 25. A statistically significant association was declared at a p-value < 0.05. Results From 1530 participants the response rate were 96.1% and 100% for normal and overweight women, respectively. The prevalence of depression among normal weight women was 26.02% (95% CI: 23.3%, 28.73%) whereas among overweight was 32.89% (95% CI: 28.85%, 36.93%). For women who have normal weight; being exposed to stressful life events, having poor social support, and body image disturbance were statistically significant factors. For women who have overweight, stressful life events, body image disturbance, and experienced weight stigma were significantly associated. Conclusion and Recommendation Depression among overweight women was high compared to normal weight in Debre Berhan town. Promoting social support at any aspect of health care services are very important to minimize depression. Especially for overweight women, encouraging management of medical illness, coping mechanisms for different stressful life events and potentiating self-confidence towards body image are a vital means to prevent depression. Health promotion program targeting reproductive age women with significant associated factors are important to overcome overweight and depression in Debre Berhan town.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Changes in body mass index (BMI) over the course of one's lifetime are related to the development of mental disorders. In the current study we compared symptoms of depression, generalized anxiety as well as general health status in the four BMI-classes: underweight, normal weight, overweight and obesity. Furthermore, mediator role of general health status on the relationship between BMI and depression and generalized anxiety was analyzed. METHODS A representative sample (random-route sampling) of the German population (N = 2350) was investigated in a cross-sectional survey by measuring the three questionnaires PHQ-9, GAD-7 and EQ-5D-5L. RESULTS The results showed significant differences between the four BMI-classes in all three questionnaires. Individuals with obesity demonstrated higher values in depression, anxiety and general health compared to the three other BMI-classes. However, there was no U-shaped association between BMI and depression, anxiety and health-related quality of life. Regarding to the mediation analysis, general health status fully mediated the association between BMI, depressive symptoms as well as generalized anxiety symptoms. LIMITATIONS The assessment of the three factors depression, anxiety and general health status were measured by questionnaires, but no clinical diagnoses can be provided. CONCLUSIONS Evidence supports that individuals with obesity have an increased risk for depression and anxiety as well as lower general health. Further research on potential intervention and strategies in public health policies is needed to be able to target the developing of mental disorders in individuals with obesity. Taking their general health status into account is also of great importance.

Abstract
Background This is a cross-sectional study to explore the age and gender specific association between obesity and depression in Chinese rural adults. Methods A total of 29,900 eligible participants from the Henan Rural Cohort Study were included. Standard anthropometric measurements were undertaken to obtain data on body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC). The Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) was utilized to discover depressive symptoms. Logistic regression was performed to explore the association between obesity (independent variable) and depressive symptoms (dependent variable). Results There were 1777 subjects with depressive symptoms, accounting for 5.94%. After multivariable adjustment, compared with normal weight group, the odds ratios (ORs) [95% confidence interval (CI)] for depressive symptoms in underweight, overweight and general obese groups were 1.41 (1.08–1.84), 0.87 (0.78–0.97) and 0.86 (0.74–0.99), respectively. Similarly, the OR (95% CI) of abdominal obesity group was 0.84 (0.76–0.93). Besides, there was linear decreasing trend of WC with depressive symptoms, but not BMI. Moreover, the inverse association between obesity and depressive symptoms was stronger in men and the elderly than that in women and the young. Conclusion Underweight was associated with a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms, which indicated that health care should pay attention to underweight as well as obesity, especially for women and the young. Abstract
The gut microbiota play an important role in many central nervous system diseases through the gut microbiota-brain axis. Recent studies suggest that nicotinamide riboside (NR) has neuroprotective properties. However, it is unknown whether NR can prevent or protect against alcohol-induced depression. Furthermore, it is unclear whether its therapeutic action involves changes in the composition of the gut microbiome. Here, we investigated the effects of NR in the mouse model of alcohol-induced depression. Treatment with NR improved the alcohol-induced depressive behaviour in mice. In addition, NR decreased the number of activated microglia in the hippocampus, and it reduced the levels of pro-inflammatory (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α) and anti-inflammatory (IL-10 and TGF-β) cytokines in the brain of mice with alcohol-induced depression. Furthermore, NR significantly upregulated BDNF and diminished the inhibition of the AKT/GSK3β/β-catenin signalling pathway in the hippocampus of these mice. 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that, compared with control and NR-treated mice, the gut microbiome richness and composition were significantly altered in the depressed mice. Spearman's correlation analysis showed that differential gut bacterial genera correlated with the levels of inflammation-related cytokines and BDNF in the brain. After faecal microbiota transplantation, cognitive behaviours, microglial activity, levels of cytokines and BDNF, and activation state of the AKT/GSK3β/β-catenin signalling pathway (which is downstream of the BDNF receptor, TrkB) in recipient mice were similar to those in donor mice. Collectively, our findings show that NR dietary supplementation protects against alcohol-induced depression-like behaviours, possibly by altering the composition of the gut microbiota.

Abstract
PURPOSE Obesity has been associated with an increased risk of the depression in the general population, but it is unknown whether this relationship applies equally to immigrants as well as non-immigrants. Furthermore, the nature of the relationship is uncertain, is it direct or curvilinear? The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between body mass index and major depressive episode among immigrants and non-immigrants. METHODS To provide more statistically robust data, a series of cross-sectional health surveys of the Canadian population for the 5 years 2010-2014 were pooled to increase the number of immigrants in the study. Restricted cubic splines analysis was used to examine the nature of the association. RESULTS Immigrants had lower 12-month depression and obesity prevalence rates than non-immigrants. In addition, it was found that non-immigrants were more likely to develop depression than immigrants, OR = 1.40 (95% CI, 1.16-1.67). Obese respondents were more likely to develop depression than normal weight respondents in both immigrant (OR = 1.55; 95% CI, 1.03-2.32) and non-immigrant groups (OR = 1.23; 95% CI, 1.15-1.32). A significant nonlinear elongated J-shaped association between obesity and depression was found for both immigrants and non-immigrants with increased risk of depression in obese individuals. CONCLUSION Culture-specific, clinical-based interventions should be developed to improve the early identification, treatment and recovery of individuals with a high BMI particularly among those with BMIs in the obese range.

Abstract
Background The paper aimed to examine the association between obesity status and successful aging among elderly adults in China and further find gender differences in the effect of components of successful aging on obesity status. Methods The data came from the follow-up survey(2015) of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and 4019 dwellers age 60 and over are included. Obesity status were defined by the body mass index (BMI) according to Chinese criteria. Successful aging was defined following Rowe and Kahn’s multidimensional model. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the relationship between obesity status and successful aging. Results The rate of successful aging in men and women was 18.87 and 9.48% respectively. For BMI, the proportion of population with underweight, overweight and obesity in men was 10.29, 23.04 and 29.63% respectively and that in women was 1.40, 11.69 and 9.47%. Men with obesity (OR = 1.587 95% CI 1.087 ~ 2.316) has an positive relationship with successful aging than normal weight men; Women with underweight (OR = 0.197 95% CI 0.058 ~ 0.824) has an negative relationship with successful aging than normal weight women; Meanwhile, no matter men and women, the relationship between obesity status and successful aging were not significant among oldest adults(≥75 years). Conclusion Obesity status was significantly association with successful aging in young older adults (60-74 years), and the components of successful aging differently were related with the obesity status of male and female.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of depression in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) ranges from 10% to 42%, but the diagnosis of depression in patients with COPD is often unrecognized and untreated. Unrecognized depression has major implications for compliance with medical treatment, prolonged lengths of stay, increased frequency of hospital admissions, and increased consultations with primary care physicians. Many studies have attempted to identify risk factors for progression, prognosis and response to therapy in patients with depression. However, few studies have examined the risk factors for depression in patients with COPD, and some results remain controversial. AIM To identify the potential risk factors to define patients with COPD who are at "high risk" of depression. METHODS The clinical data of 293 patients with COPD were reviewed from January 2017 to December 2018. The correlations between demographics, clinical characteristics and depression were analyzed. The risk factors for depression in patients with COPD were identified by multivariate logistic regression analysis. The cutoff value, sensitivity and specificity of the independent correlation factors were calculated with a receiver operating characteristic curve. RESULTS Of the 293 patients included, 65 (22.18%) individuals were identified to have depression. Significant differences were detected between patients with and without depression in terms of body mass index (BMI), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), and COPD assessment test (CAT) score (all P < 0.05). Low BMI, low FEV1, and high CAT were independent risk factors for depression in patients with COPD and the cutoff values of BMI, FEV1, and CAT scores were 21.373 kg/m2, 0.855 L and 12.5, respectively. CONCLUSION Low BMI, low FEV1, and high CAT score were identified as independent risk factors for depression in patients with COPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about depression in middle-aged and older Canadians and how it is affected by health determinants, particularly immigrant status. This study examined depression and socio-economic, health, immigration and nutrition-related factors in older adults. METHODS Using weighted comprehensive cohort data from the baseline Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (n = 27,162) of adults aged 45-85, gender-specific binary logistic regression was conducted with the cross-sectional data using the following variables: 1) Depression (outcome) measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Short Depression (CESD-10) rating scale; 2) Immigration status: native-born, recent and mid-term (< 20 years), and long-term immigrants (≥20 years); and 3) covariates: socioeconomic status, physical health (e.g., multi-morbidity), health behavior (e.g., substance use), over-nutrition (e.g., anthropometrics), under-nutrition (e.g., nutrition risk), and dietary intake. RESULTS The sample respondents were mainly Canadian-born (82.6%), women (50.6%), 56-65 years (58.9%), earning between C$50,000-99,999 (33.2%), and in a relationship (69.4%). When compared to Canadian-born residents, recent, mid-term (< 20 years), and longer-term (≥ 20 years) immigrant women were more likely to report depression and this relationship was robust to adjustments for 32 covariates (adjusted ORs = 1.19, 2.54, respectively, p < 0.001). For women, not completing secondary school (OR = 1.23, p < 0.05), stage 1 hypertension (OR = 1.31, p < 0.001), chronic pain (OR = 1.79, p < 0.001), low fruit/vegetable intakes (OR = 1.33, p < 0.05), and fruit juice (OR = 1.80, p < 0.001), chocolate (ORs = 1.15-1.66, p's < 0.05), or salty snack (OR = 1.19, p < 0.05) consumption were associated with depression. For all participants, lower grip strength (OR = 1.25, p < 0.001) and high nutritional risk (OR = 2.24, p < 0.001) were associated with depression. For men, being in a relationship (OR = 0.62, p < 0.001), completing post-secondary education (OR = 0.82, p < 0.05), higher fat (ORs = 0.67-83, p's < 0.05) and omega-3 egg intake (OR = 0.86, p < 0.05) as well as moderate intakes of fruits/vegetables and calcium/high vitamin D sources (ORs = 0.71-0.743, p's < 0.05) predicted a lower likelihood of depression. For men, chronic conditions (ORs = 1.36-3.65, p's < 0.001), chronic pain (OR = 1.86, p < 0.001), smoking (OR = 1.17, p < 0.001), or chocolate consumption (ORs = 1.14-1.72, p's < 0.05) predicted a higher likelihood of depression. CONCLUSIONS The odds of developing depression were highest among immigrant women. Depression in middle-aged and older adults is also associated with socioeconomic, physical, and nutritional factors and the relationships differ by sex. These results provide insights for mental health interventions specific to adults aged 45-85.

Chronic medical conditions and metabolic syndrome as risk factors for incidence of major depressive disorder: A longitudinal study based on 4.7 million adults in South Korea. Abstract
BACKGROUND The assessment of comorbid physical illness and metabolic or cardiovascular risk factors as potential risk factors for onset of major depressive disorder (MDD) is crucial. We aimed to investigate potential risk factors for the development of MDD among individuals with chronic medical conditions and metabolic and behavioral risk factors using a large population-based retrospective cohort from the data of the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) in South Korea. METHODS The population-based retrospective cohort included data from 2,370,815 adults (age ≥20 years) diagnosed with MDD between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2016 and age- and gender-matched 2,370,815 healthy controls obtained from the claims data of the NHIS. The data of the regular health checkup provided by the NHIS were also included (age ≥40 years). Logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate the potential risk factors for the incidence of MDD. RESULTS Chronic medical conditions such as Parkinson's disease (odds ratio [OR] = 7.808, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 7.517-8.11), epilepsy (OR = 6.119, 95% CI = 6.019-6.22), multiple sclerosis (OR = 5.532, 95% CI = 4.976-6.151), Huntington's disease (OR = 5.387, 95% CI = 3.258-8.909), migraine (OR = 4.374, 95% CI = 4.341-4.408), stroke (OR = 4.074, 95% CI = 4.032-4.117), and cancer; metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.049, 95% CI = 1.041-1.057) and several of its components including central obesity, elevated fasting blood glucose and triglyceride levels, and reduced high-density lipoprotein level; and cigarette smoking, frequent alcohol consumption, and low physical activity are potential risk factors for the development of MDD. CONCLUSION Our results may support previous evidence on the association between physical conditions and the incidence of MDD as reported by individual population-based studies with modest sample sizes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is associated with depression, but a common measure of obesity, body mass index (BMI), combines height and weight. Consequently, which body shape dimensions and sizes are most relevant to depression is unclear. METHOD Data were analyzed from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey years 2007-2016, focusing on adults age 20 and older who were not pregnant. In this nationally-representative sample (N = 23,739), relations of depressive symptoms with body shape variables were tested, controlling for age, gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. RESULTS Body weight and BMI, but not standing height, predicted depressive symptoms. Adults with relatively high body weight or BMI (roughly the top 30-40% of women or 10% of men) had substantively elevated depressive symptoms (d ≥ 0.20) within genders. BMI ranges predicting elevated depressive symptoms among women (BMI ≥ 30) and men (BMI ≥ 36) were higher than standard overweight and obesity definitions, respectively. LIMITATIONS This observational study was cross-sectional. Future longitudinal and experimental research is needed to clarify potential causal relations between body weight and depression. Other body shape variables may also predict depression. CONCLUSIONS Body weight but not height predicted concurrent risk for depressive symptomatology in the United States. Future research should test whether assessment focused on body weight not adjusted for height, as in BMI, improves depression prevention and treatment.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Mounting evidence indicates that sleep disturbance contributes to the increased risk for cardiometabolic diseases. Obesity and underweight are also closely linked to cardiometabolic risk. Thus, the objective of this study was to examine the association between sleep duration, quality, and body mass index (BMI) categories. METHODS Using data from a cohort of 107,718 Korean individuals (63,421 men and 44,297 women), we conducted cross-sectional analysis with sex subgroup analysis. Sleep duration was classified into 3 groups-short (< 7 hours), normal (7-9 hours) and long sleep (> 9 hours)-and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score was used to divide sleep quality into 2 groups-poor (PSQI > 5) and good sleep (PSQI ≤ 5). Compared to normal sleep and good sleep quality, adjusted odds ratios of short and long sleep and poor sleep for BMI categories were calculated. BMI categories included underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg/m2), overweight (BMI 23 to < 25 kg/m2), obesity (BMI 25 to < 30 kg/m2) and severe obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2). RESULTS Short sleep duration had the dose-dependent relationship with obesity categories from overweight to severe obesity, and inverse relationship with underweight (adjusted odds ratios [95% confidence intervals] for underweight, overweight, obesity, and severe obesity versus normal weight; 0.88 [0.82-0.94], 1.15 [1.11-1.20], 1.31 [1.26-1.37], 1.70 [1.54-1.85]). Poor sleep quality was significantly associated with severe obesity in male subgroup (1.16 [1.05-1.27]) and with obesity (1.18 [1.10-1.25]) and severe obesity in female subgroup (1.66 [1.40-1.98]). CONCLUSIONS Short sleep duration and poor sleep quality was more positively associated with obesity across BMI than underweight.

Abstract
Depression plays an important role in the pathogenesis and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, its relevance is frequently unrecognized by clinicians and researchers. The purpose of this review is to present a critical analysis of the evidence linking depression and metabolic disorders and to highlight the practical implications of this complex relationship. Evidence obtained from epidemiological, basic, clinical and controlled studies demonstrate that the association goes beyond a random phenomenon. Epidemiological studies have rendered controversial results due to the lack of control of the confounding variables and the bidirectional relationship that exists between the outcomes and the conditions that modulate the association (i.e. socioeconomic status). Animal and human studies have been useful to define the anatomic substrates and physiologic processes that participate in the association, but, the evidence is preliminary in many areas (i.e gene × environmental interactions). Controlled studies have shown the strong impact that treatment of depression has on body weight and the large effect that has the correction of excess body weight on the depression-related symptoms. Practical implications of the depression-obesity duet include the training of the health providers to assess and treat these conditions in a concomitant manner, the need for translational medicine projects and the application the systems biology approach to fill the existing gaps of knowledge.

Abstract
PURPOSE Obesity is a complex and multifactorial disease identified as a global epidemic. Convergent evidence indicates that obesity differentially influences patients with neuropsychiatric disorders providing a basis for hypothesizing that obesity alters brain structure and function associated with the brain's propensity toward disturbances in mood and cognition. Herein, we characterize alterations in brain structures and networks among obese subjects (ie, body mass index [BMI] ≥30 kg/m2) when compared with non-obese controls. PATIENTS AND METHODS We obtained noninvasive diffusion tensor imaging and generalized q-sampling imaging scans of 20 obese subjects (BMI=37.9±5.2 SD) and 30 non-obese controls (BMI=22.6±3.4 SD). Graph theoretical analysis and network-based statistical analysis were performed to assess structural and functional differences between groups. We additionally assessed for correlations between diffusion indices, BMI, and anxiety and depressive symptom severity (ie, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale total score). RESULTS The diffusion indices of the posterior limb of the internal capsule, corona radiata, and superior longitudinal fasciculus were significantly lower among obese subjects when compared with controls. Moreover, obese subjects were more likely to report anxiety and depressive symptoms. There were fewer structural network connections observed in obese subjects compared with non-obese controls. Topological measures of clustering coefficient (C), local efficiency (Elocal), global efficiency (Eglobal), and transitivity were significantly lower among obese subjects. Similarly, three sub-networks were identified to have decreased structural connectivity among frontal-temporal regions in obese subjects compared with non-obese controls. CONCLUSION We extend knowledge further by delineating structural interconnectivity alterations within and across brain regions that are adversely affected in individuals who are obese.
