Abstract
Food adulteration involving the illegal addition of dyes to foodstuffs has become an alarming issue in recent years. This study developed and validated a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-DAD (diode array detector) method for the simultaneous determination of nine azo dyes (Butter Yellow, Sudan Orange G, Para Red, Sudan I, Sudan II, Sudan III, Sudan IV, Sudan Red 7B, and Scarlet 808). Moreover, a qualitative analysis method using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was developed to more accurately identify peaks detected in HPLC-DAD. The calibration curve represented good linearity (r2 ≥ 0.9998) over the measured concentration range of 0.5-25 mg/kg. limit of detection and limit of quantification were 0.01-0.04 and 0.04-0.12 mg/kg, respectively. Accuracy and precision were 96.0-102.6 and 0.16-2.01 (relative standard deviation%), respectively. Additionally, the measurement uncertainty and HorRat value were estimated. Several Curcuma longa L. distributed in Korea were collected and monitored for azo dye contaminants. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The proposed HPLC-DAD method represents a significant advancement in the field, offering a reliable means of quantifying azo dyes and identifying their presence even at trace levels in adulterated turmeric. This not only contributes to ensuring the safety and integrity of turmeric products but also establishes precedent for robust analytical techniques in addressing food safety challenges.

Recent advances in electrochemical sensors based on nanomaterials for detection of red dyes in food products: A review. Food Chem 2024; 435:137656. Abstract
Red dyes as Allura Red (E129), Amaranth (E124), Ponceau 4R (E123), Erythrosine (E127) and Carmoisine (E122), are very popular food additives due to their stability, low cost, and minimal microbial contamination. Despite these advantages, their consumption may result in asthma, hyperactivity, carcinogenic effects, etc depending on the uptake and age. Therefore, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have managed the permissions of allowed daily intake (ADI) for consumption levels of these dyes to be 0.01-7.0 mg/kg to assure foodstuffs consumer's safety and avoid their adverse effects. Yet, many countries as Japan and USA have prohibited their use in food and drinks to reduce their possible health risks. Based on the above concentration ranges, highly sensitive and selective detection techniques are required, accordingly, the application of electrochemical sensors for the analysis of these dyes in food samples is very promising due to their superior sensitivity and selectivity, low cost and rapid response compared to traditional spectrophotometric or chromatographic methods. Also, they can be miniaturized, portable and require no complicated sampling or preparation procedures, besides being ecofriendly which allows their commercialization for public consumers in fast detection kits. In this review, the role of nanomaterials such as: carbon-based, transition metal oxides, metal organic frameworks, ionic liquids and others in enhancing the detection properties of modified electrochemical sensors for red dyes will be evaluated in terms of the type of nanomaterial applied, tested food samples and their impact on the evaluation of foodstuffs quality.

Abstract
New coccine (NC), as a kind of common colorant, has been frequently used in our daily life. Herein, the fluorescent composite (PNTs@C6) prepared by the hydrophobic non-covalent interaction between peptide nanotubes and coumarin 6 (C6) was designed for the determination of NC. Due to the activation of C6 by peptide nanotubes, the composite exhibits strong green fluorescence emission, which can be selectively quenched by NC through the inner filter effect. Therefore, a new fluorescent method based on the PNTs@C6 composite for NC detection was constructed. Under optimal conditions, the fluorescence quenching of the sensor exhibits a good linear relationship with the concentration of NC in the range of 0.01-10 μM and the limit of detection is 3.6 nM. Furthermore, the strategy shows simplicity, rapid response and high selectivity and has been successfully applied to the detection of NC in food samples.

Abstract
Chitosan (Ch)-diatomite (D) composite beads (Ch-D) were synthesized using epichlorohydrin and tripolyphosphate crosslinkers and then moulded into uniform beads in tripolyphosphate solution. FT-IR and SEM-EDX analyses showed that Ch-D composite adsorbent was successfully synthesized by functionalization of chitosan to Ch-D by hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions and improved adsorption capacity for removal of Allura red AC (AR) food dye. The removal rate of AR food dye was found to be 98 % at 25 °C, natural AR dye pH value, 24 h, and at the initial AR dye concentration of 200 mg L-1. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 34.7 mg g-1. It was observed that π-π interactions, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interactions between the functional groups containing oxygen and amine on the surface of the Ch-D composite and the functional groups of the anionic AR dye, and AR dye adsorption via complexation took place. In light of all this information, the Ch-D composite adsorbent is a promising potential material for the effective treatment of colored pollutants from wastewater.

Abstract
In the past decade, novel nano-engineering protocols have been actively synergized with fluorescence spectroscopic techniques to yield higher intensity from radiating dipoles, through the process termed plasmon-enhanced fluorescence (PEF). Consequently, the limit of detection of analytes of interest has been dramatically improvised on account of higher sensitivity rendered by augmented fluorescence signals. Recently, metallic thin films sustaining surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have been creatively hybridized with such PEF platforms to realize a substantial upsurge in the global collection efficiency in a judicious technology termed surface plasmon-coupled emission (SPCE). While the process parameters and conditions to realize optimum coupling efficiency between the radiating dipoles and the plasmon polaritons in SPCE framework have been extensively discussed, the utility of disruptive nano-engineering over the SPCE platform and analogous interfaces such as 'ferroplasmon-on-mirror (FPoM)' as well as an alternative technology termed 'photonic crystal-coupled emission (PCCE)' have been seldom reviewed. In light of these observations, in this focus review, the myriad nano-engineering protocols developed over the SPCE, FPoM and PCCE platform are succinctly captured, presenting an emphasis on the recently developed cryosoret nano-assembly technology for photo-plasmonic hotspot generation (first to fourth). These technologies and associated sensing platforms are expected to ameliorate the current biosensing modalities with better understanding of the biophysicochemical processes and related outcomes at advanced micro-nano-interfaces. This review is hence envisaged to present a broad overview of the latest developments in SPCE substrate design and development for interdisciplinary applications that are of relevance in environmental as well as biological heath monitoring.

Abstract
This paper presents a novel eco-friendly sensing material based on carbon paper (CP) volumetrically modified with a composite nanomodifier that includes functionalized poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) graphene (PDDA-G) and phytosynthesized gold nanoparticles (phyto-AuNPs). The functionalization of graphene was justified by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The phyto-AuNPs (d = 6 nm) were prepared by "green" synthesis with the use of strawberry leaf extract. The sensing material was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and voltammetry. The research results indicated a more than double increase in the electroactive surface area; a decrease in the resistance of electron transfer on nanocomposite-modified CP, compared to bare CP. The phyto-AuNPs/PDDA-G/CP was used for the electrosensing of the synthetic dye Ponceau 4R. The oxidation signal of colorant enhanced 4-fold on phyto-AuNPs/PDDA-G/CP in comparison to CP. The effect of the quantity of nanomodifier, solution pH, potential scan rate, accumulation parameters, and differential pulse parameters on the peak current of Ponceau 4R was studied. Under optimal conditions, excellent sensory characteristics were established: LOD 0.6 nM and LR 0.001-2 μM for Ponceau 4R. High selectivity and sensitivity enable the use of the sensor for analyzing the content of Ponceau 4R in food products (soft drinks, candies, and popsicles) without additional sample preparation.

Abstract
Allura red (AR) is a member of azo dyes is commonly used as an additive in foods and soft drinks. However, due to the special harm of the azo structure to the human body, the dosage control of AR becomes particularly necessary. The present detection methods are time-consuming, expensive and complicated. In order to address the above issues, a core-shell nanocubes constructed sensor has been developed to determine the ultrawide detection range and selective recognition of AR with a long-term reusability. The core-shell architecture is composed of carbon material of 12.64 nm thickness covering 600 nm Mn3O4 nanocube. This nanocomposite combines the advantages of Mn3O4@C, possessing high electrocatalysis and chemical stability. As confirmed in using sports drinks as real samples, the as-prepared AR sensor exhibites excellent selectivity with an ultra-wide linear range from 0.1 to 1748.4 μM, and meanwhile, this sensor can also meet the requirements of remarkable anti-interference and reusability over 30 days.

Abstract
Herein, for the first time the carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized by reflux method from sawmill waste material. We also represent a novel strategy based on fluorescent CDs for determination of ponceau 4R and allura red dyes in soft drinks. Interestingly, both the dyes were sensitive and showed effective fluorescence quenching of the CDs owing to the interaction between them. The analytical applicability of CDs were evaluated for detection of both the dyes with a good linear relationship between the concentration range of 0.0 to 3.0 µg mL-1 and having detection limit 0.45 and 0.47 µg mL-1 for allura red and ponceau 4R dyes respectively. Meanwhile, the potential application of this novel fluorescent probe for dyes determination in real samples was validated in different soft drink samples with good accuracy and precision. Thus, these findings provides new insights for the potential risk assessment of both the dyes. Moreover, CDs acted as an excellent fluorescent material in cellular imaging owing to their cellular uptake and localization.

Abstract
Since excessive use of synthetic dyes has negative effects on human health, their determination in foodstuff is necessary. A sensitive sensor was developed based on copper BTC metal-organic framework (Cu-BTC MOF) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride as an ionic liquid (IL) in an attempt to modify the carbon paste electrode and to improve the active surface area and electric conductivity so that electron transfer is faster for electro analysis. For the first time, high sensitivity, excellent conductivity, and appropriate selectivity of the electrochemical sensor have been evaluated as a new study for simultaneous determination of tartrazine, patent blue V, acid violet 7 and ponceau 4R. Excellent sensing performance of the proposed electrode was confirmed for patent blue V as an outstanding sensor, according to the low limit of detection of 0.07 µM, with a wide linear concentration range of 0.08 to 900 µM and reasonable recovery. In order to characterize the electrochemical behavior of electrode, cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are used. Various techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-Ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) are employed to verify the structure of copper BTC metal-organic framework. The results revealed close packing of hierarchically porous nanoparticles and crystal structure of Cu-BTC MOF, with the edge of each particle around 20-37 nm. The analytical performance of the suggested electrochemical sensor is acceptable in foodstuffs such as jellies, condiments, soft drinks, and candies.

Abstract
In this work, we report a simple but efficient voltammetric sensor for simultaneous detection of ponceau 4R and tartrazine based on TiO2/electro-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (TiO2/ErGO). TiO2/ErGO nanocomposites were prepared by ultrasonically dispersing TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) into graphene oxide (GO) solution followed by a green in-situ electrochemical reduction. TiO2 NPs were uniformly supported on ErGO nanoflakes, which provides a favorable interface for the adsorption and subsequent oxidation of target analytes. TiO2/ErGO showed remarkable electrocatalytic capacity for the oxidation of ponceau 4R and tartrazine, with minimized oxidation overpotentials and boosted adsorptive striping differential pulse voltammetric (AdSDPV) response peak currents. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the anodic peak currents of ponceau 4R and tartrazine increase linearly with the respective natural logarithm of concentrations from 0.01 to 5.0 μM. The detection limits (LOD = 3σ/s) for ponceau 4R and tartrazine are 4.0 and 6.0 nM, respectively. The extraordinary analytical properties of TiO2/ErGO/GCE are primarily attributed to the synergistic enhancement effect from ErGO nanoflakes and TiO2 NPs. Moreover, the proposed TiO2/ErGO/GCE achieves reliable determination of ponceau 4R and tartrazine in orange juice with excellent selectively, reproducibility and stability. Together with simplicity, rapidness, and low cost, the proposed sensor demonstrates great potential for on-site detection of azo colorants.

Abstract
Use of food additives, such as colorants and preservatives, is highly regulated because of their potential health risks to humans. Therefore, it is important to detect these compounds effectively to ensure conformance with industrial standards and to mitigate risk. In this paper, we describe the preparation and performance of an ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for detecting a key food additive, sunset yellow. The sensor uses graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as the luminescent agent and potassium persulfate as the co-reactant. Strong and sensitive ECL signals are generated in response to trace amounts of added sunset yellow. A detection limit (signal-to-noise ratio = 3) of 7.6 nM and a wide linear range from 2.5 nM to 25 μM are demonstrated. A further advantage of the method is that the luminescent reagents can be recycled, indicating that the method is sustainable, in addition to being simple and highly sensitive.

Abstract
Titania/electro-reduced graphene oxide nanohybrids (TiO2/ErGO) were synthesized by the hydrolysis of titanium sulfate in graphene oxide suspension and in situ electrochemical reduction. It provides a facile and efficient method to obtain nanohybrids with TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) uniformly coated by graphene nanoflakes. TiO2/ErGO nanohybrids were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammogram, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in detail. Compared with pure ErGO and TiO2 NPs, TiO2/ErGO nanohybrids greatly enhanced the electrocatalytic activity and voltammetric response of Allura Red. In the concentration range of 0.5-5.0 μM, the anodic peak currents of Allura Red were linearly correlated to their concentrations. However, the linear relationship was changed to the semi-logarithmic relationship at a higher concentration region (5.0-800 μM). The detection limit (LOD) was 0.05 μM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. The superior sensing performances of the proposed sensor can be ascribed to the synergistic effect between TiO2 NPs and ErGO, which provides a favorable microenvironment for the electrochemical oxidation of Allura Red. The proposed TiO2/ErGO/GCE showed good reproducibility and stability both in determination and in storage, and it can accurately detect the concentration of Allura Red in milk drinks, providing an efficient platform for the sensitive determination of Allura Red with high reliability, simplicity, and rapidness.

Abstract
Color is one of the key ingredients for increasing the appetizing of food, so food dyes have become firmly established in food production technologies. However, with the acquisition of toxicity data of synthetic food dyes (SFD), there were restrictions and standards for their content in food have emerged. Numerous papers published in recent years demonstrate the importance of the problem of the use and definition of SFD. The review contains over 180 literary references in the field of usage and methods of determination of synthetic food dyes, among them regulatory documents (regulations), official internet resources of international and Ukrainian organizations, review articles and original works. Varieties of chromatography, enzyme-linked immunoassay, optical and electrochemical methods are used to identify and determine SFD. Special attention was paid to voltammetry (VA) as a method that is cheaper than chromatography and completely satisfies selectivity, sensitivity, reliability requirements and is compatible with the concept of green analytical chemistry, as it doesn't need organic solvents. Moreover, single sweep voltammetry can be considered as a screening method with low limits of determination and rapid respons

Abstract
A simple method to determine Allura Red (AR) in cherry gelatin, chili sauce and strawberry juice by square-wave adsorptive stripping voltammetry (SWAdV) in the presence of cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) is reported. Using a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), Amaranth (AM), Ponceau 4R (P-4R) and AR were oxidized to very close potential values in medium acid pH 3.0 with phosphate buffer solution (PBS), making selective AR detection impossible. Under these conditions AM, P-4R and AR were oxidized at 0.80, 0.77 and 0.81 V, respectively. When small amounts of CPB were added, an AR-CPB aggregate was formed. This change displaced the oxidation almost 0.14 V in the direction of the most positive potential and increased the current almost 50%, while AM and P-4R were oxidized at almost the same potential. Under these conditions, the selective determination of AR in food was possible. Detection limit was 0.032 μmol L-1. Finally, the method was successfully applied to the determination of AR in these foods.

Abstract
Allura Red is a food color that can lead to neurotoxicity. Taurine is an organic compound that can act as a neuroprotectant. This study aimed to assess the effects of Allura Red with or without taurine consumption on rats' medial Prefrontal Cortex (mPFC). The subjects were divided into six groups as follows: distilled water, taurine (200 mg/kg/day), and low (7 mg/kg/day = acceptable daily dose), and high (70 mg/kg/day) doses of Allura Red with or without taurine consumption for six weeks. The results of novel objects recognition and eight-arm radial maze tests indicated impairment of memory in the Allura Red groups. Subsequently, their brains were analyzed using stereological methods. Both doses of Allura Red caused an increase in working and reference memory errors during the acquisition and retention phases in comparison to the distilled water group (p < 0.01). Additionally, the high dose of Allura Red led to a reduction in the volume of mPFC (35%) and its subdivisions, number of neurons (59%) and glial cells (46%), length of dendrites, and number of spines (mushroom and thin) per dendritic length in comparison to the distilled water group (p < 0.05). The low dose group only showed a reduction in the number of glial cells. However, simultaneous treatment of rats with taurine plus Allura Red prevented the above-mentioned changes. The acceptable daily dose of Allura Red could bring about impairment in spatial learning and memory as well as in the number of glial cells. On the other hand, the high dose of Allura Red could impair learning, memory, and mPFC structure. Thus, taurine could act as a neuroprotectant.

Abstract
Nanosensors have wide applications in the food industry. Nanosensors based on quantum dots for heavy metal and organophosphate pesticides detection, and nanocomposites as indicators for shelf life of fish/meat products, have served as important tools for food quality and safety assessment. Luminescent labels consisting of NPs conjugated to aptamers have been popular for rapid detection of infectious and foodborne pathogens. Various detection technologies, including microelectromechanical systems for gas analytes, microarrays for genetically modified foods, and label-free nanosensors using nanowires, microcantilevers, and resonators are being applied extensively in the food industry. An interesting aspect of nanosensors has also been in the development of the electronic nose and electronic tongue for assessing organoleptic qualities, such as, odor and taste of food products. Real-time monitoring of food products for rapid screening, counterfeiting, and tracking has boosted ingenious, intelligent, and innovative packaging of food products. This chapter will give an overview of the contribution of nanotechnology-based biosensors in the food industry, ongoing research, technology advancements, regulatory guidelines, future challenges, and industrial outlook.
