Abstract
BACKGROUND The biological functions of ferulic acid (FA) have garnered significant interest but its limited solubility and stability have led to low bioavailability. Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD), with its distinctive hollow structure, offers the potential for encapsulating hydrophobic molecules. The formation of an inclusion complex between FA and HP-β-CD may therefore be a viable approach to address the inherent limitations of FA. To investigate the underlying mechanism of the FA/HP-β-CD inclusion complex formation, a combination of spectral analyses and computer simulation was employed. RESULTS The disappearance of the characteristic peaks of FA in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the formation of an inclusion complex between FA and HP-β-CD. Thermogravimetry-derivative thermogravimetry (TG-DTG) studies demonstrated that the thermal stability of FA was enhanced due to the encapsulation of FA within HP-β-CD. Molecular dynamics simulation also provided evidence that FA successfully penetrated the HP-β-CD cavity, primarily driven by van der Waals interactions. The formation of the complex resulted in more compact HP-β-CD structures. The bioavailability of FA was also strengthened through the formation of inclusion complexes with HP-β-CD. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study have contributed to a deeper understanding of the interactions between FA and HP-β-CD, potentially advancing a delivery system for FA and enhancing the bioavailability of insoluble active components. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The encapsulation of sodium sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) is influenced not only by the degree of substitution (DS) but also by the presence of strong-bonded water (SBW). Guests compete with SBW for positions within the cavity of SBE-β-CD. However, the correlation between DS and SBW was not clear. This study revealed a positive correlation between DS and SBW utilizing Karl Fischer titration. The mechanism may be attributed to molecular polarizability. To explore the impact of SBW inside SBE-β-CD with different DS on encapsulation, density functional theory was employed. Throughout the release process, an increase in enthalpy is unfavorable, while an increase in entropy favors spontaneous reaction occurrence. For SBE-β-CD (DS = 2, 3), enthalpy increase is the primary factor, leading to the retention of SBW within the cavities and consequently hindering guest entry. In contrast, for SBE-β-CD (DS = 4, 7), the situation differs. For SBE10-β-CD, the influence of SBW is minimal. This study aims to elucidate the relationship between DS and SBW, as well as the effect of SBW inside SBE-β-CD with different DS on encapsulation. It is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the factors affecting the encapsulation of SBE-β-CD, thereby promoting quality control and functional development of SBE-β-CD.

Abstract
This is the first study on the modeling of the controlled release of the estimated antioxidants (flavonoids or flavonolignans) from β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/hydrophilic vegetable extract complexes and the modeling of transdermal pharmaceutical formulations based on these complexes using an overall estimation by the spectrophotometric method. The Korsmeyer-Peppas model was chosen for evaluating the release mechanisms. β-CD/chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L., Asteraceae) ethanolic extract and β-CD/milk thistle (Silybum marianum L., Asteraceae) ethanolic extract complexes were obtained by the co-crystallization method with good recovering yields of 55-76%, slightly lower than for β-CD/silibinin or silymarin complexes (~87%). According to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Karl Fischer water titration (KFT), the thermal stability of complexes is similar to β-CD hydrate while the hydration water content is lower, revealing the formation of molecular inclusion complexes. In the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, β-CD/M. chamomilla flower extract complexes reveal Case II transport mechanisms, while the corresponding complexes with leaf extracts indicate non-Fickian diffusion for the controlled release of antioxidants in ethanol 60 and 96%. The same non-Fickian diffusion was revealed by β-CD/S. marianum extract and β-CD/silibinin complexes. On the contrary, almost all model transdermal pharmaceutical formulations based on β-CD/M. chamomilla extract complexes and all those based on β-CD/S. marianum extract complexes revealed non-Fickian diffusion for the antioxidant release. These results indicate that H-bonding is mainly involved in the diffusion of antioxidants into a β-CD based matrix, while the controlled release of antioxidants in model formulations is mainly due to hydrophobic interactions. Results obtained in this study can be further used for studying the particular antioxidants (namely rutin or silibinin, quantified, for example, by liquid chromatographic techniques) for their transdermal transport and biological effects in innovatively designed pharmaceutical formulations that can be obtained using "green" methods and materials.

Abstract
The goal of the study was the discrimination of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) oil/antioxidant ternary complexes through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with principal component analysis (FTIR-PCA). These innovative complexes combine the characteristics of the three components and improve the properties of the resulting material such as the onsite protection against oxidative degradation of hazelnut oil unsaturated fatty acid glycerides. Also, the apparent water solubility and bioaccessibility of the hazelnut oil components and antioxidants can be increased, as well as the controlled release of bioactive compounds (fatty acid glycerides and antioxidant flavonoids, namely hesperidin, naringin, rutin, and silymarin). The appropriate method for obtaining the ternary complexes was kneading the components at various molar ratios (1:1:1 and 3:1:1 for β-CD hydrate:hazelnut oil (average molar mass of 900 g/mol):flavonoid). The recovering yields of the ternary complexes were in the range of 51.5-85.3% and were generally higher for the 3:1:1 samples. The thermal stability was evaluated by thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. Discrimination of the ternary complexes was easily performed through the FTIR-PCA coupled method, especially based on the stretching vibrations of CO groups in flavonoids and/or CO/CC groups in the ternary complexes at 1014.6 (± 3.8) and 1023.2 (± 1.1) cm-1 along the second PCA component (PC2), respectively. The wavenumbers were more appropriate for discrimination than the corresponding intensities of the specific FTIR bands. On the other hand, ternary complexes were clearly distinguishable from the starting β-CD hydrate along the first component (PC1) by all FTIR band intensities and along PC2 by the wavenumber of the asymmetric stretching vibrations of the CH groups at 2922.9 (± 0.4) cm-1 for ternary complexes and 2924.8 (± 1.4) cm-1 for β-CD hydrate. The first two PCA components explain 70.38% from the variance of the FTIR data (from a total number of 26 variables). Other valuable classifications were obtained for the antioxidant flavonoids, with a high similarity for hesperidin and naringin, according to FTIR-PCA, as well as for ternary complexes depending on molar ratios. The FTIR-PCA coupled technique is a fast, nondestructive and cheap method for the evaluation of quality and similarity/characteristics of these new types of cyclodextrin-based ternary complexes having enhanced properties and stability.

Abstract
β-Cyclodextrin nanosponge (β-CD-M) was used for the adsorption of ibuprofen (IBU) from water and sewage. The obtained material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH), Harkins and Jura t-Plot, zeta potential, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and elementary analysis (EA). Batch adsorption experiments were employed to investigate the effects of the adsorbent dose, initial IBU concentration, contact time, electrolyte ions and humic acids, and sewage over adsorption efficiency. The experimental isotherms were show off using Langmuir, Freundlich, Hill, Halsey and Sips isotherm models and thermodynamic analysis. The fits of the results were estimated according to the Sips isotherm, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 86.21 mg g-1. The experimental kinetics were studied by pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, modified Freundlich, Weber Morris, Bangham's pore diffusion, and liquid film diffusion models. The performed experiments revealed that the adsorption process fits perfectly to the pseudo-second-order model. The Elovich and Freundlich models indicate chemisorption, and the kinetic adsorption model itself is complex. The data obtained throughout the study prove that this nanosponge (NS) is extremely stable, self-separating, and adjusting to the guest structure. It also represents a potential biodegradable adsorbent for the removal IBU from wastewaters.

Abstract
The goal of the study was to evaluate the influence of the solvent properties on the crystal characteristics of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) recrystallized from alcohol-water solvent mixtures, with possible applications for the preparation, purifying and complexation of β-CD. For the first time, structure-property relationships (QSPRs) between the hydrophobicity of alcohols or dielectric constant of solvents used for recrystallization of β-CD and its properties (such as crystallinity index, CI) have been obtained. Recrystallized β-CD from water and C1-C4 alcohol-water solutions provide β-CD with higher CI values of 99.4(±5.9)% for ethanol-water (1:4, v/v) as recrystallizing system. This property has a parabolic variation with the logP (octanol/water partition coefficient) of the alcohol (r2 = 0.998). Solvent parameters also influence the β-CD crystal characteristics, as was demonstrated by X-ray diffractometry refinement, infrared spectroscopy and thermal analyses.

Abstract
The global demand for natural products grows rapidly, intensifying the request for the development of high-throughput, fast, non-invasive tools for quality control applicable on-site. Moisture content is one of the most important quality parameters of natural products. It determines their market suitability, stability and shelf life and should preferably be constantly monitored. Miniaturized near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is a powerful method for on-site analysis, potentially fulfilling this requirement. Here, a feasibility study for applicability and analytical performance of three miniaturized NIR spectrometers and two benchtop instruments was evaluated in that scenario. The case study involved 192 dried plant extracts composed of five different plants harvested in different countries at various times within two years. The reference analysis by Karl Fischer titration determined the water content in this sample set between 1.36% and 6.47%. For the spectroscopic analysis half of the samples were laced with a drying agent to comply with the industry standard. The performance of various calibration models for NIR analysis was evaluated on the basis of root-mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) determined for an independent test set. Partial least squares regression (PLSR), Gaussian process regression (GPR) and artificial neural network (ANN) models were constructed for the spectral sets from each instrument. GPR and ANN models performed superior for all samples measured by handheld spectrometers and for native ones analyzed by benchtop instruments. Moreover, the accuracy penalty when analyzing native samples was lower for GPR and ANN prediction as well. With GPR or ANN calibration, miniaturized spectrometers offered the prediction performance at the level of the benchtop instruments. Therefore, in this analytical application miniaturized spectrometers can be used on-site with no penalty to the performance vs. laboratory-based NIR analysis.

Abstract
(1) Background: The water content and the way of bonding in the food matrices, including bread, can be easily and simply evaluated by Karl Fischer titration (KFT). The goal was to identify the main KFT parameters that influence the similarity/dissimilarity of commercial bread products, using multivariate statistical analysis. (2) Methods: Various commercial bread samples were analyzed by volumetric KFT and the water content, parameters from titration process and KFT kinetics were used as input for principal component analysis (PCA). (3) Results: The KFT water content was in the range of 35.1–44.2% for core samples and 19.4–22.9% for shell samples. The storage and transportation conditions consistently influence the water content of bread. The type of water molecules can be evaluated by means of KFT water reaction rates. The mean water reaction rates up to 2 min are consistently higher for bread core samples, which indicates a high fraction of “surface” water. PCA reveals the similarity of core samples and various bread types, as well as dissimilarity between bread parts, mainly based on KFT kinetic parameters. (4) Conclusions: KFT kinetics can be a useful tool for a rapid and simple differentiations between various types of bread products.

Abstract
Myrtenol has gained wide interest because of its pharmacological profiles, mainly for treatment of chronic diseases. To improve the solubility of myrtenol, the formation of inclusion complexes with β-cyclodextrin was performed by physical mixture, kneading process or slurry complexation (SC) methods and characterized using thermal analysis, XRD, SEM and NMR. From these results, myrtenol complexed by SC was successfully complexed into β-cyclodextrin cavity. The interaction between myrtenol and β-cyclodextrin was confirmed by molecular docking. Hence, the SC β-cyclodextrin-myrtenol complex was evaluate for its anti-hyperalgesic, anxiolytic and antioxidant activity in a fibromyalgia model. Results show that myrtenol and β-cyclodextrin form a stable complex and have anti-hyperalgesic effect, improve the cognitive impairment caused and have an anxiolytic-like effect. Furthermore, the β-cyclodextrin/myrtenol complex decrease lipoperoxidation, increased catalase activity and a reduce SOD/CAT ratio. Therefore, β-cyclodextrin/myrtenol complex reduce painful behavior, improves motor skills and emotional behavior and decreases oxidative stress in a fibromyalgia model.

Abstract
Croton rhamnifolioides is used in popular medicine for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. The objective of this study was to characterize and evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of C. rhamnifolioides essential oil complexed in β-cyclodextrin (COEFC). The physicochemical characterization of the complexes was performed using different physical methods. The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated in vivo by ear edema, paw edema, cotton pellet-induced granuloma, and vascular permeability by Evans blue extravasation. The mechanism of action was validated by molecular docking of the major constituent into the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2 enzyme). All doses of the COEFC reduced acute paw edema induced by carrageenan and dextran, as well as vascular permeability. Our results suggest the lowest effective dose of all samples inhibited the response induced by histamine or arachidonic acid as well as the granuloma formation. The complexation process showed that the pharmacological effects were maintained, however, showing similar results using much lower doses. The results demonstrated an involvement of the inhibition of pathways dependent on eicosanoids and histamine. Complexation of β-cyclodextrin/Essential oil (β-CD/EO) may present an important tool in the study of new compounds for the development of anti-inflammatory drugs.

Abstract
The assessment of the petroleum product quality often involves multiple indicators, among which water content and acid value are two major parameters. The complexity of an oil sample and the narrow space in pipeline transport make it difficult to monitor the oil quality in real-time. Considering the practical requirements, a new type of flexible microstrip sensor is proposed in this work. The shape and line width of the microstrip sensor are studied and optimized by theory and experiments. The proposed square spiral-based microstrip sensor has good water content detection resolution at high frequencies with less acid interference, and it can determine the acid value in the low-frequency band. The sensor surface is further passivated, protecting it from direct contact with the oil sample to enhance the electrochemical robustness, and still achieves good detection linearity and high sensitivity. After encapsulation on a flexible substrate, the proposed microstrip sensor realized the non-contact determination of the water content and acid value of oil at the same time, which is only a few millimeters in size and can conform to various tubing wall shapes. Due to the fact that the manufacture of the sensor is CMOS-compatible, we expect it to be readily applied to many other miniaturized chemical-sensing applications.

Abstract
β-Cyclodextrin- and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin/Danube common nase (Chondrostoma nasus L.) oil complexes (β-CD- and HP-β-CD/CNO) have been obtained for the first time. The fatty acid (FA) profile of the CNO indicates an important content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, the most important being eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 6.3%) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 1.6%), both ω-3 FAs. The complexes have been obtained by kneading method. The moisture content and successful of molecular encapsulation have been evaluated by thermal and spectroscopic techniques. Thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry analyses reveals that the moisture content of CD/CNO complexes significantly decreased, compared to starting CDs. On the other hand, the crystallinity index was for the first time determined for such type of complexes, the β-CD/CNO complex having values of 43.9(±18.3)%, according to X-ray diffractometry. FA profile and CD/CNO characteristics sustain the use of these ω-3 based complexes for food supplements or functional food products, but further studies are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND One of the most efficient ways to prevent arboviruses, such as dengue fever, yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika, is by controlling their vector, the Aedes aegypti. Because this vector is becoming resistant to most larvicides used, the development of new larvicides should be considered. β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) complexes have been investigated as an interesting way of enabling the use of essential oils in water as larvicides. This study comprised the development of Lippia gracilis essential oil (LGEO) and β-CD inclusion complexes for control of Ae. aegypti. RESULTS Thermal analysis clearly showed the formation of complexes using kneading and co-evaporation methods. Gas chromatography analysis showed that kneading without co-solvent (KW) gave the highest content (∼ 15%) of the LGEO major component. Moreover, KW showed that the complex had a 50% lethal concentration (LC50 ; 33 ppm) lower than that of pure LGEO (39 ppm); in other words, complexing LGEO with β-CD improved the larvicidal activity. In addition, LGEO complexed with β-CD (KW) was not harmful to non-target organisms at the concentrations needed to control Ae. aegypti larvae. CONCLUSION The inclusion complex with LGEO was a feasible formulation, being economically viable, easy-to-apply and without impact on non-target organisms and, therefore, is a potential alternative larvicide for Ae. aegypti control. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The novel 2-aminothiophene derivative 2-amino-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzo[b]thiophene-3-carbonitrile (6CN) has shown potential anti-proliferative activity in human cancer cell lines. However, the poor aqueous solubility of 6CN impairs its clinical use. This work aimed to develop binary 6CN-β-cyclodextrin (βCD) systems with the purpose of increasing 6CN solubility in water and therefore, to improve its pharmacological activity. The 6CN-βCD binary systems were prepared by physical mixing, kneading and rotary evaporation methods and further characterized by FTIR, XRD, DSC, TG and SEM. In addition, molecular modeling and phase solubility studies were performed. Finally, MTT assays were performed to investigate the cytostatic and anti-proliferative effects of 6CN-βCD binary systems. The characterization results show evident changes in the physicochemical properties of 6CN after the formation of the binary systems with βCD. In addition, 6CN was associated with βCD in aqueous solution and the solid state, which was confirmed by molecular modeling and the aforementioned characterization techniques. Phase solubility studies indicated that βCD forms stable 1:1 complexes with 6CN. The MTT assay demonstrated the cytostatic and anti-proliferative activities of 6CN-βCD binary systems and therefore, these might be considered as promising candidates for new anticancer drugs.

Abstract
Complexation with cyclodextrins (CDs) is a technique that has been extensively used to increase the aqueous solubility of oils and improve their stability. In addition, this technique has been used to convert oils into solid materials. This work aims to develop inclusion complexes of Copaifera multijuga oleoresin (CMO), which presents anti-inflammatory activity, with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) by kneading (KND) and slurry (SL) methods. Physicochemical characterization was performed to verify the occurrence of interactions between CMO and the cyclodextrins. Carrageenan-induced hind paw edema in mice was carried out to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of CMO alone as well as complexed with CDs. Physicochemical characterization confirmed the formation of inclusion complex of CMO with both β-CD and HP-β-CD by KND and SL methods. Carrageenan-induced paw edema test showed that the anti-inflammatory activity of CMO was maintained after complexation with β-CD and HP-β-CD, where they were able to decrease the levels of nitrite and myeloperoxidase. In conclusion, this study showed that it is possible to produce inclusion complexes of CMO with CDs by KND and SL methods without any change in CMO’s anti-inflammatory activity.

Abstract
The moisture content of β-cyclodextrin/Danube fish oils complexes (common barbel, Pontic shad, European wels catfish, common bleak) was evaluated by thermal methods. Saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids were the most concentrated in fish oils (25.3-30.8% and 36.1-45.0%). ω-3 And ω-6 fatty acids were identified in low concentrations of 2.8-12.1% and 4.1-7.1%. The moisture content was significantly lowered after β-CD complexation, as revealed by thermogravimetric (TG) analysis (13.3% for β-CD, 2.5-6.5% for complexes). These results are consistent with the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data for the peaks corresponding to dissociation of water (calorimetric effect of 536Jg-1 for β-cyclodextrin and 304-422.5Jg-1 for complexes). Furthermore, both TG and DSC results support the formation of inclusion complexes. This is the first study on the nanoencapsulation of Danube fish oils in β-cyclodextrin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Citronellal (CT) is a monoterpene with antinociceptive acute effect. β-Cyclodextrin (βCD) has enhanced the analgesic effect of various substances. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of CT both complexed in β-cyclodextrin (CT-βCD) and non-complexed, in a chronic muscle pain model (CMP) in mice. STUDY DESIGN The complex containing CT in βCD was obtained and characterized in the laboratory. The anti-hyperalgesic effect of CT and CT-βCD was evaluated in a pre-clinical in vivo study in a murine CMP. METHODS The complex was characterized through differential scanning calorimetry, derivative thermogravimetry, moisture determination, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Male Swiss mice were pre-treated with CT (50mg/kg, po), CT-βCD (50mg/kg, po), vehicle (isotonic saline, po) or standard drug (tramadol4 mg/kg, ip). 60 min after the treatment and then each 1h, the mechanic hyperalgesia was evaluated to obtain the time effect. In addition, the muscle strength using grip strength meter and hyperalgesia were also performed daily, for 7 days. We assessed by immunofluorescence for Fos protein on brains and spinal cords of mice. The involvement of the CT with the glutamatergic system was studied with molecular docking. RESULTS All characterization methods showed the CT-βCD complexation. CT-induced anti-hyperalgesic effect lasted until 6h (p <0.001) while CT-βCD lasted until 8h (p <0.001vs vehicle and p <0.001vs CT from the 6th h). CT-βCD reduced mechanical hyperalgesia on all days of treatment (p <0.05), without changing muscle strength. Periaqueductal gray (p <0.01) and rostroventromedular area (p <0.05) showed significant increase in the Fos protein expression while in the spinal cord, there was a reduction (p <0.001). CT showed favorable energy binding (-5.6 and -6.1) to GluR2-S1S2J protein based in the docking score function. CONCLUSION We can suggest that βCD improved the anti-hyperalgesic effect of CT, and that effect seems to involve the descending pain-inhibitory mechanisms, with a possible interaction of the glutamate receptors, which are considered as promising molecules for the management of chronic pain such as CMP.

Abstract
The thermal and oxidative stability of Atlantic salmon oil (Salmo salar L.) as well as its β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) complexation ability has been verified for the first time. The main omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, were significantly degraded, even at 50 °C. Their relative concentrations decrease from 6.1% for EPA and 4.1% for DHA to 1.7% and 1.5% after degradation at 150 °C, respectively. On the other hand, the relative concentrations of monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids remained constant or slightly increased by a few percent after degradation (e.g., from 10.7% to 12.9% for palmitic acid). Co-crystallization of ASO with β-CD at a host–guest ratio of 1:1 and 3:1 from an ethanol–water mixture and kneading methods has been used for the preparation of β-CD/ASO complexes. The analysis of the complexes by thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Karl Fischer titration (KFT) as well as the decrease of the “strongly-retained” water content confirm the formation of the inclusion compound. Furthermore, the DSC parameters correlate well with the KFT kinetic data for β-CD/ASO complexes.

Abstract
Ocimum basilicum L. essential oil and its β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) complex have been investigated with respect to their stability against the degradative action of air/oxygen and temperature. This supramolecular system was obtained by a crystallization method in order to achieve the equilibrium of complexed-uncomplexed volatile compounds in an ethanol/water solution at 50 °C. Both the raw essential oil and its β-CD complex have been subjected to thermal and oxidative degradation conditions in order to evaluate the protective capacity of β-CD. The relative concentration of the O. basilicum L. essential oil compounds, as determined by GC-MS, varies accordingly with their sensitivity to the thermal and/or oxidative degradation conditions imposed. Furthermore, the relative concentration of the volatile O. basilicum L. compounds found in the β-CD complex is quite different in comparison with the raw material. An increase of the relative concentration of linalool oxide from 0.3% to 1.1%, in addition to many sesquiterpene oxides, has been observed. β-CD complexation of the O. basilicum essential oil modifies the relative concentration of the encapsulated volatile compounds. Thus, linalool was better encapsulated in β-CD, while methylchavicol (estragole) was encapsulated in β-CD at a concentration close to that of the raw essential oil. Higher relative concentrations from the degradation of the oxygenated compounds such as linalool oxide and aromadendren oxide were determined in the raw O. basilicum L. essential oil in comparison with the corresponding β-CD complex. For the first time, the protective capability of natural β-CD for labile basil essential oil compounds has been demonstrated.

Abstract
The inclusion complex of ethyl benzoate with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD) was prepared by a freeze-drying method and its characterizations were investigated by different analytical techniques including UV, FT-IR and phase solubility methods. All these approaches indicated that ethyl benzoate was able to form an inclusion complex with HPCD, and the ethyl benzoate/HPCD inclusion compounds exhibited different spectroscopic features and properties from ethyl benzoate. The stoichiometry of the complex was 1:1 and it was the benzene ring part of the ethyl benzoate molecule included into the HPCD cavities from the wider edge. The calculated apparent stability constant of the complex was 9485 M(-1). Moreover, the water solubility of ethyl benzoate was significantly improved by phase solubility studies. The release of ethyl benzoate was also regulated by the form of the inclusion complex. The results showed that HPCD was a proper excipient for increasing the solubility and controlled release of ethyl benzoate.

Abstract
Background Obtaining new pharmaceutical materials with enhanced properties by using natural compounds and environment-friendly methods is a continuous goal for scientists. Ficaria verna Huds. is a widespread perennial plant with applications in the treat of haemorrhoids and to cure piles; it has also anti-inflammatory, astringent, and antibiotic properties. The goal of the present study is the obtaining and characterization of new F. verna extract/β-cyclodextrin complexes by using only natural compounds, solvents, and environment-friendly methods in order to increase the quality and acceptability versus toxicity indicator. Thus, the flavonoid content (as quercetin) of Ficaria verna Huds. flowers and leaves from the West side of Romania was determined and correlated with their antioxidant activity. Further, the possibility of obtaining β-cyclodextrin supramolecular systems was studied. Results F. verna flowers and leaves extracts were obtained by semi-continuous solid-liquid extraction. The raw concentrated extract was spectrophotometrically analyzed in order to quantify the flavonoids from plant parts and to evaluate the antioxidant activity of these extracts. The F. verna extracts were used for obtaining β-cyclodextrin complexes; these were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and Karl Fischer water titration; spectrophotometry was used in order to quantifying the flavonoids and evaluates the antioxidant activity. A higher concentration of flavonoids of 0.5% was determined in complexes obtained by crystallisation method, while only a half of this value was calculated for kneading method. The antioxidant activity of these complexes was correlated with the flavonoid content and this parameter reveals possible controlled release properties. Conclusions The flavonoid content of F. verna Huds. from the West side of Romania (Banat county) is approximately the same in flowers and leaves, being situated at a medium value among other studies. β-Cyclodextrin complexes of F. verna extracts are obtained with lower yields by crystallisation than kneading methods, but the flavonoids (as quercetin) are better encapsulated in the first case most probably due to the possibility to attain the host-guest equilibrium in the slower crystallisation process. F. verna extracts and their β-cyclodextrin complexes have antioxidant activity even at very low concentrations and could be used in proper and valuable pharmaceutical formulations with enhanced bioactivity.

Abstract
The most commonly used technique for water content determination is Karl-Fischer titration with electrometric detection, requiring specialized equipment. When appropriate equipment is not available, the method can be performed through visual detection of a titration endpoint, which does not enable an analysis of colored samples. Here, we developed a method with spectrophotometric detection of a titration endpoint, appropriate for moisture determination of colored samples. The reaction takes place in a sealed 4 ml cuvette. Detection is performed at 520 nm. Titration endpoint is determined from the graph of absorbance plotted against titration volume. The method has appropriate reproducibility (RSD = 4.3%), accuracy, and linearity (R(2) = 0.997).
