Abstract
Plantago asiatica L. (PAL), a traditional herb, has been used in East Asia for thousands of years. In recent years, polysaccharides extracted from PAL have garnered increased attention due to their outstanding pharmacological and biological properties. Previous research has established that PAL-derived polysaccharides exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antitumor, antimicrobial, immune-regulatory, intestinal health-promoting, antiviral, and other effects. Nevertheless, a comprehensive summary of the research related to Plantago asiatica L. polysaccharides (PALP) has not been reported to date. In this paper, we review the methods for isolation and purification, physiochemical properties, structural features, and biological activities of PALP. To provide a foundation for research and application in the fields of medicine and food, this review also outlines the future development prospects of plantain polysaccharides.

Abstract
The main objective of this work was to evaluate the combined effect of a biotechnology process, based on selected yeast strains, and a high-pressure homogenization (HPH) treatment on the microbiological quality, structural organization of proteins, chitin content, and antioxidant activity of a mixture of cricket powder (Acheta domesticus) and water. Compared to untreated samples, the cricket matrix treated with HPH four times at 180 MPa promoted the growth of the inoculated Yarrowia lipolytica and Debaryomyces hansenii strains. HPH did not affect the concentration of chitin; however, the combination with microorganisms tended to reduce the content. Although the antioxidant activity increased from 0.52 to 0.68 TAC mM/TE after a 48 h incubation in the control, it was further improved by the combination of HPH and D. hansenii metabolism, reaching a value of 0.77 TAC mM/TE. The combination of the two approaches also promoted a reduction in the intensity of bands with molecular weights between 31 and 21.5 kDa in favor of bands with a lower molecular weight. In addition, HPH treatment reduced the number of accessible thiols, suggesting protein structure changes that may further impact the technological properties of cricket powder.

Abstract
The main objective of this study was to investigate the potential probiotic properties of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus VHProbi®M15 (M15). This study examined the effects of M15 on sucralfate-induced constipation in a mouse model. The BALB/c mice were randomly divided into four groups: the normal group (NOR) was without any treatment, while the constipation (CON), phenolphthalein (PHE), and probiotic (PRO) treatment groups were fed with sucralfate until the appearance of constipation symptoms. Afterward, the NOR and CON groups were given 1 ml saline orally every day until the end of the experiment; the PHE and PRO groups were given phenolphthalein or M15 suspension in 1 ml orally, respectively. Compared with the CON group, the fecal water content and intestinal peristalsis improved in the PRO group. Here, intake of M15 effectively attenuated sucralfate-induced constipation, recuperated colonic epithelial integrity, and increased serum levels of gastrointestinal excitatory neurotransmitters (motilin, gastrin, substance P). Analysis of the intestinal microbiota of mice by 16S rRNA metagenomic revealed an increase in the relative abundance of Bacteroides and a decrease in Sclerotinia, Verrucosa and Proteus in the PRO group. Compared with the CON group, the constipation-induced intestinal microecological changes were partially recovered in the PHE and PRO groups. These results demonstrate that M15 enhanced gastrointestinal transit and alleviated in mice with sucralfate-induced constipation.

Abstract
During the processing of maize, Stigma maydis, also known as corn silk, is normally discarded as waste. Phytochemical research was carried out on the S. maydis to use it as a valuable source of bioactive components. This research aimed to maximize the recovery of free and bound phenolic compounds from corn silk under optimal experimental conditions. Response surface design was operated to optimize the alkaline hydrolysis extraction of bound phytochemicals from corn silk based on total phenolic content and DPPH radical scavenging activity. The optimum conditions (i.e., NaOH concentration 2 M, digestion time 135 min, digestion temperature of 37.5°C, the solid-to-solvent ratio of 1:17.5, and acetone) were obtained. The optimum parameters were used to extract the corn silk. The structures of two compounds isolated from ethyl acetate extracts were then identified as friedelin (1) and (E)-4-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) but-3-en-2-one (2). The DPPH, H2 O2 , and ABTS % inhibition of the compounds is as follows: compound (1) 74.81%, 76.8%, 70.33% and compound (2) 70.37%, 56.70% and 57.46%, respectively. The current study has opened previously unexplored perspectives of the composition of bound compounds in corn silk and established the foundations for more effective processing and utilization of corn waste. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Bound phenolic compounds from corn silk under optimal experimental conditions were obtained. Corn silk can be utilized as a type of medicinal herb as well as a source of inexpensive natural antioxidants.

Abstract
In order to fully investigate the anti-aging value of the plants polysaccharides, the fermentation method was applied to modify the Polygonatum kingianum polysaccharides (PKPS), and the ultra-filtration was used to further segment the hydrolyzed polysaccharides. It was found that the fermentation induced an increase in the in vitro anti-aging-related activities of PKPS including antioxidant, hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic activity, and cellular aging-delaying ability. In particular, the low Mw fraction PS2-4 (10-50 kDa) separated from the fermented polysaccharide exhibited superior anti-aging activity on experimental animals. PS2-4 extended the Caenorhabditis elegans lifespan by 20.70 %, with an increased effect of 10.09 % compared to the original polysaccharide; it was also more effective than the original one in improving movement ability and reducing lipofuscin accumulation of worms. This fraction was screened as the optimal anti-aging active polysaccharide. After fermentation, the main molecular weight distribution of PKPS changed from 50-650 kDa to 2-100 kDa, and the chemical composition and monosaccharide composition also changed; the initial rough and porous microtopography turned into smooth state. These alterations in physicochemical characteristics suggest that fermentation exerted an influence on the structure of PKPS, which contributed to the enhanced anti-aging activity, indicating that fermentation was promising in the structural modification of polysaccharides.

Abstract
Plantago asiatica L. has been used as a vegetable and nutritious food in Asia for thousands of years. According to recent phytochemical and pharmacological research, the active compositions of the plant contribute to various health benefits, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and anticancer. This article reviews the 87 components of the plant and their structures, as well as their biological activities and molecular research progress, in detail. This review provides valuable reference material for further study, production, and application of P. asiatica, as well as its components in functional foods and therapeutic agents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Environmental pollution and male infertility have become global public health problems. The presence of microplastics (MPs) has been detected in the human body, and it has also been demonstrated that MPs can cause damage to the reproductive system. Wuwei Fuzheng Yijing Decoction (WWFZYJ) is effective in treating male infertility. Therefore, we designed a clinical randomized controlled trial to observe the effect of WWFZYJ on the content of MPs and semen quality in male infertility patients, and to evaluate its security. METHODS In this randomized controlled study, 66 eligible patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to a treatment group (WWFZYJ Decoction) and a control group (Coenzyme Q10 tablets combined with vitamin E soft capsules) for 8 weeks. The content of MPs in semen, sperm DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI), and semen analysis (including sperm density, sperm count, forward motile sperm, sperm motility, etc) will be used as primary indicators, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome scores will be used as secondary indicators. Vital signs (such as respiration, heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure, electrocardiogram, etc), blood routine, urine routine, stool routine, liver function, and renal function will be used as safety indicators. The primary and secondary indicators will be performed at 0th and 8th week, and the safety indicators will be performed at 0th, 4th, and 8th week. DISCUSSION This study will provide evidence for the efficacy and safety of WWFZYJ in treating male infertility and reducing the content of MPs in semen, and further explore the effects of MPs on male fertility.

Abstract
In this study, microwave pretreatment and grinding treatment were used to enhance sulforaphane formation, then ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) was applied to extract sulforaphane using simultaneous hydrolysis and extraction method. The effects of various parameters, which were ultrasonic time,ultrasonic power, solid-water ratio and solid-ethyl acetate ratio on the extraction rate of sulforaphane were investigated. The results showed that microwave pretreatment enhanced sulforaphane formation. Excessive size reduction did not increase or even reduced extraction rate of sulforaphane. Simultaneous hydrolysis and extraction significantly increased extraction rate of sulforaphane compared to hydrolysis followed by extraction. UAE accelerated mass transfer and the solubilization of the targeted compounds due to the acoustic cavitation effect, thus enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis of glucoraphanin and the extraction rate of sulforaphane. The extraction rate of sulforaphane using UAE with simultaneous hydrolysis and extraction was 4.07-fold of the conventional extraction method. UAE was an effective method to extract sulforaphane from broccoli seeds since it led to higher yield of sulforaphane in a much shorter extraction time.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of polysaccharide from Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam. pulp (JFP-Ps) on gut microbiota composition and short-chain fatty acids production in mice. The microbial communities of V3 and V4 region 16S rRNA gene was amplified by PCR, then sequenced on an Illumina MiSeq PE250 platform and analyzed by multivariate statistical methods. The concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were measured using gas chromatography (GC) equipped with a flame ionization detector (FID). The results showed that JFP-Ps significantly affected the levels of intestinal bacteria, including Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Actinobacteria, Tenericutes, Deferribacteres and TM7. The concentrations of acetic acid, propionic acid, n-butyric acid and total SCFAs in mouse feces were significantly increased by treatment with JFP-Ps for 2 weeks. These results indicate that JFP-Ps is beneficial to the gut health and can be developed as a functional ingredient in relation to gut health.

Abstract
Food nutrients plays a crucial role in human health, especially in gastrointestinal (GI) health. The effect of food nutrients on human health mainly depends on the digestion and fermentation process in the GI tract. In vitro GI digestion and fermentation models had the advantages of reproducibility, simplicity, universality, and could integrally simulate the in vivo conditions to mimic oral, gastric, small intestinal and large intestinal digestive processes. They could not only predict the relationship among material composition, structure and digestive characteristics, but also evaluate the bioavailability of material components and the impact of digestive metabolites on GI health. This review systematicly summarized the current state of the in vitro simulation models, and made detailed descriptions for their applications, advantages and disadvantages, and specially their applications in food carbohydrates. In addition, it also provided the suggestions for the improvement of in vitro models and firstly proposed to establish a set of standardized methods of in vitro dynamic digestion and fermentation conditions for food carbohydrates, which were in order to further evaluate more effects of the nutrients on human health in future.

Abstract
Citrus fiber dispersion with different concentrations (5–25 g/kg) was treated by high-pressure homogenization (90 and 160 MPa) for two cycles. The particle size distribution, hydration properties of powders, morphology and rheological measurements were carried out to study the microstructure and rheological properties changes by high-pressure homogenization (HPH). In conclusion, the HPH can reduce the particle size of fiber, improve the water holding capacity and water binding capacity. Furthermore, fiber shape can be modified from globular cluster to flake-like slices, and tiny pores can be formed on the surface of citrus fiber. The apparent viscosity, storage modulus and loss modulus were increased by HPH whereas the activation energy was reduced. The Hershcel–Bulkley model, Carreau model and Power Law mode were selected to evaluate the rheological properties.

Abstract
There is growing interest in the antioxidants and antibacterial activity from natural substances. The purpose of the research was to gain and distinguish phenolic substances and organic acids in the Camellia oleifera cake, and to study their antioxidant and antibacterial activities. The extraction and purification of them were achieved by solvent extraction and column separation, respectively. The conclusions displayed that purity of the phenolic substances was 94.1 ± 0.5% w/w and that of organic acid was 96.0 ± 0.3% w/w; Fifteen phenolic substances were certificated using HPLC-ESI-MS technology; oxalic, citric, acetic, malic, and succinic acids are discovered to be main organic acids. In addition, the phenolic substances and organic acids both have good antioxidant activity and obvious inhibition against six species of bacteria. These conclusions can be useful in the reuse of the waste of Camellia oleifera oil industry in the future.

Abstract
Our previous study characterized the structure-associated immunomodulatory effects of an edible Dendrobium aphyllum polysaccharide (DAP), and the in vitro gastrointestinal digestions highlighted DAP could be digested by the GI tract in some extent. Therefore, the present study further explored the digestive properties in vivo to infer the metabolic pathway with health mice model. Results revealed that DAP-treated group showed slightly lower blood glucose levels and significantly higher (P < 0.05) enzyme activities, namely G6Pase and GDH with an increment of about 0.4 to 0.9 and 45 to 91 U/mL, respectively. Meanwhile, DAP up-regulated the expression of glucose transporters, GLUT1 and GLUT2 in the increment rates of 56.34% to 68.28% and 76.63% to 83.03%, in colon. Furthermore, the beneficial effects of DAP on colon were confirmed by the increment of four types short chain fatty acids and the health-promoting microbiota diversity. The above results successfully identify the metabolic pathways after the oral administration of bioactive DAP. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The metabolic pathways of Dendrobium aphyllum polysaccharide, after artificially stimulated oral administration, were characterized. The most of the unabsorbed portion of DAP were utilized by the colon microbiota, resulting in the significantly increasing production of four health-promoting SCFAs. The unabsorbed portion of DAP upregulated the diversity of various beneficial microbiota genus, and meanwhile downregulated kinds of harmful microbiota genus.

Abstract
Arterial pressure of each new breeding spontaneous Phase-1 hypertension (P1-HT) rat was recorded for 5 min by intravascular femoral artery catheter that served as a reference value prior to treatment. In the acute antihypertensive test, 0.36 g/kg Bwt of Plantago asiatica seed extract (PSE) was administered, via gavage feeding, to P1-HT rats, and the arterial pressures were continuously recorded for 1 h. The acute antihypertensive effects of PSE on P1-HT rats appeared within 15 min after PSE administration and lasted over 1 h with systolic pressure decreased 31.5 mmHg and diastolic pressure decreased 18.5 mmHg. The systolic pressure decreased 28 mmHg and diastolic pressure decreased 16 mmHg in P1-HT rats when simultaneously compared with verapamil hydrochloride (reference drug), whereas there were no significant differences in the pretreated reference values of acute PSE treatment and the untreated control. In the chronic test, P1-HT rats received 0.36 g/kg Bwt day of PSE or equal volume of water for 4 weeks via oral gavage, and the lower blood pressure tendencies of chronic PSE treatment were also found when compared with the controls. The antihypertensive values of PSE were also confirmed in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Oral administration with PSE can effectively moderate blood pressure within an hour, while taking PSE daily can control the severity of hypertension, suggesting PSE is a potentially antihypertensive herb.

Abstract
We previously reported that dynamic high-pressure microfluidization (DHPM) can degrade pectin in aqueous solution. In this study, we further investigated the effect of DHPM on pectin in water-ethanol systems. In the absence of DHPM treatment, it was found that pectin exhibited increased average particle size and unchanged average molecular weight, but a decline in reducing-sugar-ends content with the increase of ethanol concentrations (0⁻10% v/v). These results indicated that the addition of ethanol induced aggregation of pectin. During DHPM treatment, pectin underwent disaggregation and degradation under all measured ethanol concentrations. Disaggregation was enhanced but degradation was weakened with the increase of ethanol concentration. FT-IR and UV spectra indicated that demethylation but no β-elimination occurred in the water-ethanol system during DHPM. Finally, the mechanism of DHPM-induced disaggregation and degradation of pectin under a water-ethanol system was updated. This work may help us to find a suitable condition for reducing the degradation of pectin during the process of homogenization.

Abstract
The structural characteristics of the polysaccharides from Aralia elata root barks (AERP) were systematically investigated by FT-IR, HPSEC-ELSD and colorimetric methods as well as by GCMS based monosaccharide compositions, Smith degradations, and methylation analysis. The result showed average molecular weights of AERP were between 42.7 kDa and 93.9 kDa. AERP was composed of Ara, Rha, GlcA, Man, Glc, and Gal in a molar ratio of 22.2: 10.3: 8.1: 32.7: 5.7: 21.2 along with a small number of sulfate (3.38%) and acetyl (4.87%) groups. The abundant glycosidic linkages of Man, Ara, Gal, and Rha were observed as more than 90% of all the monosaccharides detected. Studies to evaluate hepatoprotective potentials of AERP showed that they had potent hepatoprotective effects in vivo in carbon tetrachloride-induced acute liver injury (CIALI) in mice by histopathological evaluation, biochemical examinations and ELISA assays. GCMS was further used to determine the effects of AERP on the chemical profiles of nine common short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by intestinal flora metabolism in CIALI mice. These findings not only provide novel insights into the pharmacological actions of AERP on the protection from CIALI in mice, but they also demonstrate that determining SCFA profiles by targeted GC-MS metabolomics is an effective technique to investigate the molecular mechanisms of the effects of plant polysaccharides on intestinal flora metabolism.

Abstract
A new heteropolysaccharide (PMH) with a molecular weight of 1.4 × 103 kDa was isolated from the seed husks of Plantago asiatica L. The monosaccharide composition of PMH was determined as glucose, xylose, arabinose, rhamnose, galactose and galacturonic acid with a molar ratio of 1.0 : 1.8 : 2.4 : 3.8 : 4.9 : 8.5. The backbone of PMH consisted of 1,4-β-d-GalpA with the side chains mainly composed of 1,3-α-d-Galp and 1,2-α-d-Galp which were attached to the O-3 of GlapA. The thermal analysis using the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) method revealed that PMH had an apparent activation energy (Ea) of 173.1 kJ mol-1. PMH experienced a major decomposition during the heating process at a temperature of 91.1 °C with a dry weight loss of 31.1%. Moreover, PMH exhibited stronger antioxidant ability than commercial psyllium, partially due to its higher content of uronic acid. The results suggested that PMH could be used in functional foods due to its structural, thermal and antioxidant characteristics.

Abstract
The interleukin-6 (IL-6)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)-3 signaling pathway regulates proliferation and survival of intestinal epithelial cells and has profound impact on the tumorigenesis of colitis-associated cancer (CAC). Tea polysaccharides (TPS) are the major nutraceutical component isolated from tea-leaves and are known to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor bioactivities. Here, we investigated the antitumor activities of TPS on CAC using the azoxymethane/dextran sulfate sodium (AOM/DSS) mouse model and IL-6-induced colorectal cancer cell line (CT26) and determined whether TPS exerted its antitumor effects through the IL-6/STAT3 pathway. Results demonstrated that TPS significantly decreased the tumor incidence, tumor size, and markedly inhibited the infiltration of pro-inflammatory cells and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines via balancing cellular microenvironment. Furthermore, we found that TPS suppressed the activation of STAT3 and transcriptionally regulated the expressions of downstream genes including MMP2, cyclin Dl, survivin, and VEGF both in vivo and in vitro. Thus, it was concluded that TPS attenuated the progress of CAC via suppressing IL-6/STAT3 pathway and downstream genes' expressions, which indicated that TPS may be a hopeful antitumor agent for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer.

Abstract
Dynamic high pressure (DHP) has been applied in the physical modification of biopolymers as polysaccharides, proteins and gums. It is known that DHP is able to promote degradation of polysaccharides (e.g. molecular weight reduction). However, few studies have assessed the effect of DHP on the emulsifying and encapsulating properties of polysaccharides. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effect of DHP on the emulsifying (average droplet size and particle size distribution, optical and confocal scanning laser microscopy, rheology, zeta potential and electric conductivity, creaming index, and turbidity) and encapsulating (scanning electronic microscopy, flavor retention, average droplet size, and particle size distribution) properties of cashew tree gum (CG). The application of DHP process improved the emulsifying capacity of cashew tree gum (CG) by reducing the medium droplet size (D3,2 and D4,3), increasing the turbidity and improving the emulsion stability. However, no effect of DHP was observed on the encapsulating capacity of CG.

Abstract
Plantago notata (Plantaginaceae) is a spontaneous plant from Septentrional Algerian Sahara currently used by traditional healers to treat stomach disorders, inflammations or wound healing. A water-soluble polysaccharide, called PSPN (PolySaccharide fraction from Plantago Notata), was extracted and purified from the seeds of this semi-arid plant. The structural features of this mucilage were evaluated by colorimetric assays, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and 1H/13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. PSPN is a heteroxylan with a backbone composed of β-(1,3)-d-Xylp and β-(1,4)-d-Xylp highly branched, through (O)-2 and (O)-3 positions of β-(1,4)-d-Xylp by various side chains and terminal monosaccharides such as α-l-Araf-(1,3)-β-d-Xylp, β-d-Xylp-(1,2)-β-d-Xylp, terminal Xylp or terminal Araf. The physico-chemical and rheological analysis of this polysaccharide in dilute and semi diluted regimes showed that PSPN exhibites a molecular weight of 2.3×106g/mol and a pseudoplastic behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Korean cactus Cheonnyuncho (Opuntia humifusa) is rich in pectin, phenols, flavonoids, and minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. Some Koreans drink Cheonnyuncho juice prepared by grinding Cheonnyuncho with water. Cheonnyuncho is well known for its functional properties and antioxidant effects, but its effect on constipation has not been sufficiently studied. METHODS Loperamide (2 mg/kg) was injected subcutaneously to induce constipation in rats. The animals were divided into four groups: a normal group (NOR), constipation control group (CON), and two constipation groups receiving the Cheonnyuncho extract (CE) at two different concentrations in drinking water, 3% (L-CE group) and 6% (H-CE group), for 25 days. RESULTS The fecal pellet numbers of NOR and L-CE were significantly increased from 35.67 ± 2.09 (CON) to 50.60 ± 1.38 and 46.50 ± 2.91 after loperamide treatment, respectively (p < 0.05). The water content of fecal excretions was significantly enhanced in only the L-CE group (33.05 ± 0.49%) compared to control (23.38 ± 1.26%) (p < 0.05) after loperamide treatment. The oral intake of CE (L-CE and H-CE groups) significantly increased levels of the intestinal transit ratio (45.25 ± 1.86% and 41.05 ± 2.47%, respectively) compared to the CON group (32.15 ± 2.05%) (p < 0.05). Treatment with the low concentration of CE significantly increased fecal levels of acetic, propionic, butyric, and valeric acids, as well as the total short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentration. Histological analyses revealed that the thickness of the distal colon also increased in the CE-treated groups in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS Constipation decreased when CE was fed to the rats. In particular, the fecal pellet number and water content, as well as histological parameters such as distal colon thickness, improved. The CE treatment also increased the fecal SCFA content. These results show that the extract of Cheonnyuncho (O. humifusa) alleviated the symptoms of loperamide-induced constipation.

Abstract
Anticancer drugs at high doses often damage the intestinal mucosa and metabolism. Lactobacillus plantarum NCU116 (NCU116) isolated from pickled vegetables was orally given to cyclophosphamide-treated mice to determine its effects on intestinal mucosal injury, nutrient metabolism and colon microbiota, and investigate the mechanisms accounting for its effects. Mice treated with the bacterium were found to favorably recover intestine morphology of villus height and crypt depth, and have improved mucins expression and quantity of goblet cells, as well as intestinal metabolism by increasing the level of short-chain fatty acids and reducing the concentration of ammonia in the colon feces. In addition, NCU116-treated mice showed a higher diversity of colonic microbiota than the group without bacterium supplementation. The number of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in the mouse colon was increased after bacterium intake, which decreased the number of potentially pathogenic bacteria, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas. These results indicated that NCU116 could be of significant advantage in reducing intestinal mucosal injury and improving the intestinal metabolism and the intestinal microbiota.

Abstract
Plantago virginica L. has invaded many lawn ecosystems in the Eastern part of China. The invasion has incurred an economic cost to remove them. In order to prevent the invasion, it is critical to understand the invasive mechanisms of this species. However, few studies have been conducted on the allelopathic mechanisms of its invasion. In this study, we examined allelopathic effects of P. virginica on germination of seeds and growth of seedlings of four widely used lawn species. We found extensive allelopathic potential of P. virginica on other lawn species, which varied with species and developmental stage. While most effects of the extracts of P. virginica were inhibitory, some variables in some species were promoted by the addition of the extracts. The extracts of P. virginica significantly inhibited seed germination of Agrostis matsumurae. While the overall differences in seed germination rate of Poa annua were significant among treatments, difference between control and any of the treatments was not significant. The height of seedlings of A. matsumurae and Cynodon dactylon was significantly lower under the treatments of adding extracts of P. virginica. In contrast, growth of seedlings of Festuca elata and P. annua did not show significant differences among treatments. The root length of A. matsumurae, C. dactylon and P. annua was suppressed by the extracts of P. virginica whereas root length of F. elata was not affected. Aboveground biomass of A. matsumurae and F. elata was significantly higher than control, except for F. elata at the concentration of 50mg/mL, whereas aboveground biomass of C. dactylon and P. annua was reduced at higher concentrations of the extracts. Except for A. matsumurae, root biomass of the other three lawn species declined under the treatments with the extracts of P. virginica. Our results revealed that P. virginica had allelopathic potential on four lawn species and supported the theory of "novel weapons hypothesis". Invasion by P. virginica in lawn can be moderated by selecting those species that are not affected or promotionally affected by it.

Abstract
Polysaccharide from seeds of Plantago asiatica L. is rich in calcium, which is important for keeping viscous and weak gelling properties of the polysaccharide. However, few studies reported effect of calcium on solution and conformational characteristics of the polysaccharide. In this study, polysaccharide was prepared from seeds of P. asiatica L. and named as PLCP. PLCP was treated with EDTA to remove calcium ion to get PLCP-E. PLCP and PLCP-E were characterized by Ubbelohde capillary viscometer, light scattering and HPSEC with refractive index, light scattering and viscometric detectors. The results showed that PLCP had much higher intrinsic viscosity, hydrodynamic radius (Rh), radius of gyration (Rg) and molecular weight than that of PLCP-E when measured in the same solvent. PLCP and PLCP-E were in random coil conformation in aqueous solutions according to light scattering and HPSEC measurements. HPSEC data showed PLCP-E had lower intrinsic viscosity than that of PLCP with the same molecular weight. Persistence length of Lp was 2.5nm for PLCP and 2.3nm for PLCP-E, respectively. In conclusion, PLCP exhibited higher intrinsic viscosity and molecular weight, and stiffer conformation than that of PLCP-E, which could explain the reason of higher viscosity of PLCP.
