Abstract
Selenium (Se) is considered to be an essential trace element needed for all living organisms. The importance, deficiency, and toxic effects of Se mainly depend on its quantity and chemical nature. It has been observed that the inorganic versions of Se are more hazardous than the organic versions. This review is mainly focused on the application of different extraction methods used for Se extraction and determination such as microextraction, solid-phase extraction (SPE), and their modified modes in the last 12 years. The use of different dispersive medium (magnetic field, ultrasonic radiation, and vortex agitator) to enhance Se separation is also part of this review. The usage of environmentally friendly solvents such as supramolecular solvents, hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs), and ionic liquids (ILs) are also the focus of attention in this review. This review is also emphasized the application of advanced microextraction methods, particularly liquid-phase microextraction (LPME). The most recent advances in LPME extraction techniques for Se in various environmental samples, as well as their prospects, are reviewed. Additionally, a summary of cheap, simple, and accurate techniques that have not yet been used to determine small amounts of Se has been provided.

Abstract
Binary metallic organic frameworks can always play excellent functions for pollutants removal. One binary MOFs, UiO-66(Fe/Zr)), was newly synthesized and applied to remove aquatic selenite (SeIV) and selenate (SeVI). The adsorption behaviors and mechanisms were investigated using batch experiments, spectroscopic analyses, and theoretical calculations (DFT). The characterization results showed that the material inherited the topological structure of UiO-66 and excellent thermal stability. The large specific surface area (467.52 m2/g) and uniform mesoporous structures of the synthesized MOFs resulted in fast adsorption efficiency and high adsorption capacity for selenium species. The adsorbent kept high adsorption efficiency in a wide pH range from 2 to 11 with good anti-interference ability. The maximum adsorption capacity for Se(IV) and Se(VI) reached as high as 196 mg/g at pH 3 and 258 mg/g at pH 5, respectively. The process was conformed to fit pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm, and could be explained by the formation of Fe/Zr-O-Se bond on the material surface, which was interpreted by the results of XPS, FTIR and DFT calculation. The regeneration and TCLP experiments demonstrated that UiO-66(Fe/Zr) could be regenerated for five cycles without obvious decrease of efficiencies, and the leaching rate of the adsorbed Se(IV) and Se(VI) in the spent adsorbent were only 4.8% and 2.3%. More than 99% of original Se(IV) and Se(VI) in the lake and tap water samples (1.0 mg/L of Se) could be removed in 2.0 h.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for humans and animals, and it plays an important role in immune regulation and disease prevention. Tea is one of the top three beverages in the world, and it contains active ingredients such as polyphenols, theanine, flavonoids, and volatile substances, which have important health benefits. The tea tree has suitable Se aggregation ability, which can absorb inorganic Se and transform it into safe and effective organic Se through absorption by the human body, thereby improving human immunity and preventing the occurrence of many diseases. Recent studies have proven that 50~100.0 mg/L exogenous Se can promote photosynthesis and absorption of mineral elements in tea trees and increase their biomass. The content of total Se and organic selenides in tea leaves significantly increases and promotes the accumulation of polyphenols, theanine, flavonoids, and volatile secondary metabolites, thereby improving the nutritional quality of tea leaves. This paper summarizes previous research on the effects of exogenous Se treatment on the growth and quality of tea trees to provide a theoretical basis and technical support for the germplasm selection and exploitation of Se-rich tea.

Abstract
Selenium is a trace element essential for the proper functioning of human body. Since it can only be obtained through our diet, knowing its concentrations in different food products is of particular importance. The measurement of selenium content in complex food matrices has traditionally been a challenge due to the very low concentrations involved. Some of the difficulties may arise from the abundance of various compounds, which are additionally present in examined material at different concentration levels. The solution to this problem is the efficient separation/preconcentration of selenium from the analyzed matrix, followed by its reliable quantification. This review offers an insight into cloud point extraction, a separation technique that is often used in conjunction with spectrometric analysis. The method allows for collecting information on selenium levels in waters of different complexity (drinking water, river and lake waters), beverages (wine, juices), and a broad range of food (cereals, legumes, fresh fruits and vegetables, tea, mushrooms, nuts, etc.).

Abstract
The current non-chromatographic speciation methods generally involve the conversion of different species by oxidation/reduction reactions, which may cause inherent problems such as contamination risk, time consumption and complex operations. In this work, in-syringe solid phase extraction (IS-SPE) was combined with in-syringe vortex-assisted solidified floating organic drop microextraction (IS-VA-SFODME) for the detection of Sb(V) and Sb(III) in rice wines by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Firstly, IS-SPE involved the use of ZnFe2O4 nanotubes as the sorbent for the isolation and enrichment of Sb(V) and removal of the matrix components such as ethanol, pigment, sugars and carbohydrates. Then, IS-VA-SFODME was used for enriching Sb(III) in the original sample solution after IS-SPE. This technique exhibited good anti-interference ability and high enrichment efficiency without tedious pre-oxidation/pre-reduction and centrifugation/filtration operations, which may cause the contamination of samples. Under the selected conditions, the detection limits were 4.5 ng L-1 and 3.2 ng L-1 for Sb(III) and Sb(V) with relative standard deviations of 7.3% and 5.1%, respectively. This procedure was used with satisfactory results for the detection of Sb(III) and Sb(V) in rice wine samples and a certified reference material of water sample. Recoveries of spiked experiments ranged from 91.0 to 107%.

Abstract
A very sensitive, selective, rapid and easy gas-phase preconcentration based method is presented for the determination and speciation of inorganic selenium in chicken meat, poultry eggs, mullet fish (Mugil Cephalus) and sea bass fish (Dicentrarchus Labrax) samples. Gold-coated W-coil atom trap was used to increase the sensitivity of conventional HG-AAS. LOD and LOQ values were calculated to be 0.021 μg/L and 0.070 μg/L, respectively. RSD% was found as 3.24. The sensitivity was increased 20 times more with the method used in the current study than the HG-AAS method. The interference effects of other metals on Se signal were significantly reduced by trap. SEM and EDX images of both bare and gold coated W-coil atom trap were screened. In order to check the accuracy of the method, "DOLT-5: Dogfish Liver" standard reference material was used and there was a good agreement between certified and found values at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract
Selenomethionine (SeMet) is one of the main selenium forms in foods and supplements. Determining its presence in natural food samples creates difficulties due to possible oxidation processes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the possible degradation of SeMet in water extracts of green teas, one of the most consumed beverages worldwide. Such a medium has not been investigated at this time. The HILIC-HPLC MS/MS method with different stationary phases was used to achieve the satisfactory separation of SeMet and selenomethionine oxide (SeMetO). The addition of dithiothreitol and β-mercaptoethanol, recommended to ensure that SeMet is kept in the reduced form, was also evaluated. The best separation was achieved using the zwitterionic HILIC stationary phase coupled to mass spectrometry and MeOH with water (85/15, v/v) as the eluent. Extraction was done with hot water with the addition of β-mercaptoethanol. The infusions prepared from Lung-Ching teas (from the Zhejiang Province in China) contained the highest concentration of selenium in a typical cup of tea (12.5–17.3 µg L−1). For other tested teas it decreased in the following order: Yunnan > Dilmah > Lipton. For Lung-Ching teas, the sum of concentrations of SeMet and SeMetO corresponded to about 46–63% of the total selenium in their extracts.

Abstract
In this work, magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (MDMSPE) coupled with dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) was developed for Se(IV) and Se(VI) followed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. MDMSPE involved the use of magnetic ZnFe2O4 nanotubes for adsorbing Se(VI). The sorbent was isolated from aqueous phase by using an external magnetic field instead of tedious centrifugation or filtration. In the following step, Se(IV) in the upper aqueous phase of MDMSPE was enriched by DLLME. Samples were prepared with artificial gastric juice to avoid the inter-conversion of target species. The main factors affecting the determination of the analytes were studied in detail. the detection limits of this method were 1.0 and 1.3 pg mL-1 for Se(IV) and Se(VI) with relative standard deviations of 4.6% and 5.1% (c = 1.0 ng mL-1, n = 9), respectively. An enrichment factor of 200 was obtained. This method was used for the detection of Se(IV) and Se(VI) in food samples without any pre-oxidation or pre-reduction operation. A certified reference material of milk powder was analysed by this method, and the determined values were in good agreement with the certified values. Recoveries of spike experiments were in the range of 91.0-107%.

Abstract
A simple and green ultrasound liquid-liquid microextraction method based on low viscous hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (ULLME-LV-HDES) was proposed for the preconcentration and separation of selenium prior to HG-AAS detection. Six different DESs were prepared for the extraction of selenium. Quercetin was used complexing agent for Se(IV) ions. Various analytical parameters such as pH, quercetin amount, DES type and its volume, sonication time, sample volume were optimized. Tolerance limits of anion, cation and transition metal ions were studied. Preconcentration and enhancement factor were found 62.5 and 121. Under the optimum conditions, limit of detection was found 0.25 ng L-1 with calibration range of 0.8-120 ng L-1. Relative standard deviation was found 3.2%. The accuracy of the method was confirmed with certified reference materials (NIST 1567a Wheat flour and NIST 1548a Typical diet). Finally, the developed method was successfully applied to food and water samples.

Abstract
A new and efficient reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry method was developed for the simultaneous separation and determination of SeO3 2- and seleno-dl-methionine in kefir grains. For the system, limits of detection and quantitation values for SeO3 2- and seleno-dl-methionine were calculated as 0.52/1.73 mg/kg (as Se) and 0.26/0.87 mg/kg (as Se), respectively. After performing the system analytical performance, recovery experiment was done for kefir grains and percent recovery results for SeO3 2- and seleno-dl-methionine were calculated as 98.4 ± 0.8% and 93.6 ± 1.0%, respectively. It followed by the feeding studies that the kefir grains were exposed to three different concentrations of SeO3 2- (20, 30, and 50 mg/kg) for approximately 4 days at room temperature to investigate the conversion/non-conversion of SeO3 2- to seleno-dl-methionine. Next, the fed grains were extracted with tetramethylammonium hydroxide pentahydrate solution (20%, w/w) and then sent to the developed system. There was no detectable seleno-dl-methionine found in fed kefir grains at different concentrations of SeO3 2- while inorganic or elemental selenium in the fed kefir grains was determined between 1579.5 - 3116.0 mg/kg (as Se). Selenium species in the kefir grains samples was found in the form of SeO3 2- proved by using an anion exchange column.

Abstract
Hypercholesterolemia, one of the major risk factors of cardiovascular diseases, is a worldwide public health problem. Nutraceuticals and phytochemicals are attracting attention as a result of their cholesterol-lowering ability and minimal side effects. Among them, selenium (Se) is on the list. The amount of Se in foods varies by region. Se-enriched fertilizers and feeds can raise the Se content in plants and animals, while some processing methods decrease food Se content. This review summarizes recent studies on (1) the content distribution of Se in foods and factors influencing Se-enriched foods, (2) the bioavailability and metabolism of Se, and (3) the role of Se in affecting blood cholesterol and cholesterol metabolism. Although the hypocholesterolemic effect of Se is equivocal, its cholesterol-lowering activity may be more remarkable when the Se supplementation is 200 μg/day or the baseline blood total cholesterol is above 200 mg/dL in humans with low Se status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chromium is an interesting element because its toxicity depends on its speciation. Thus, knowledge of Cr speciation in cow milk is essential to human health. OBJECTIVE This study aims to achieve real bioaccessible species in cow milk, including Cr(III), Cr(VI), residual, digestible, and total Cr. METHODS Samples were treated with artificial gastric juice, followed by dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (DMSPE) combined with ICP-MS for Cr speciation. Fibrous g-C3N4@TiO2 nanocomposites (FGCTNCs) were used as a novel adsorbent for DMSPE. RESULTS The method detection limits were 110 pg/g (Cr(III)) and 260 pg/g (Cr(VI)) for milk powder (0.1 g), and 5.1 pg/g (Cr(III)) and 13 pg/g (Cr(VI)) for liquid cow milk (2 mL). The relative standard deviations (RSDs), obtained by analyzing the standard solutions containing 1.0 ng/mL of the analytes in sequence for nine times, were 4.3% and 5.1% for Cr(III) and Cr(VI), respectively. Linearity was observed over the range of 4 magnitude orders with correlation coefficients better than 0.9961. The enrichment factor of 100 was obtained. The majority of Cr in the samples was transferred into digestion solution. The content of Cr(III) is much higher than that of Cr(VI) in the digestion solution. CONCLUSIONS This method has the advantages of reduced solvent consumption, less adsorbent dosage, and high extraction efficiency. It may become a valuable strategy for elemental species in food samples. HIGHLIGHTS The samples were treated with artificial gastric juice to avoid the inter-conversion of species. FGCTNCs exhibit the merits of N-rich functional groups and selective adsorption for the analytes.

Abstract
Rapid and environmentally friendly ultrasound-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (US-DLLμE) and vortex assisted-emulsification liquid-liquid microextraction (VA-ELLμE) methods are proposed for the speciation of selenium in domestic and mineral water samples. A deep eutectic solvent (DES) prepared with different ratios of choline chloride and phenol is used as an extractant for hydrophobic tetravalent Se complexed with diethyldithiocarbamate in different water samples. The total inorganic Se species levels in water samples were determined via reducing Se(vi) to Se(iv), using sodium thiosulphate as a reducing agent. The total Se levels in formula milk and cereal samples were determined after microwave acid digestion. The different heating steps in GFAAS were also optimized. The analytical parameters for US-DLLμE and VA-ELLμE, including pH, the volume of complexing agent, the ultrasound and vortex mixing shaking times, and the volume and composition of the deep eutectic solvent, were optimized. The accuracies of both methods were confirmed based on the analysis of a certified reference material (CRM) BCR 189 (wholemeal flour). The enhancement factor (EF) and limit of detection (LOD) for Se(iv) via US-DLLμE were found to be 90.8 and 0.029 μg L-1, respectively, whereas an EF of 81.8 and LOD of 0.036 μg L-1 were obtained via VA-ELLμE. The % relative standard deviation (%RSD) values obtained based on the analysis of six replicate standards under the optimized conditions for US-DLLμE and VA-ELLμE were found to be 4.2 and 5.8%, respectively. The optimized methods were applied to different drinking water samples, and acid-digested milk formula and baby cereal food samples.

Abstract
The centrifuge-less dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) technique was used to separate selenium species in aqueous samples. According to the salting-out effect, a simple approach was used to eliminate the centrifugation step. The optimization of the independent variables was performed using chemometric methods. Under optimal conditions, this methodology was statistically validated. The linearity was between 20 and 300 μg L-1. The limit of detection and quantification were calculated 3.4 μg L-1 and 10.4 μg L-1, respectively. The values of reproducibility and repeatability were determined ≤ 9.5% and ≤ 6.4, respectively. The possibility of the method was successfully assessed by analyzing the analytes in real samples clarified satisfactory recoveries (98.1-101.4% for Se (IV) and 98.4-101.5% for Se (VI)).

Abstract
In this study, a novel, easy, rapid and green zirconium nanoparticles (Zr-NPs) based dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) method is presented for the precise and sensitive determination of selenium by slotted quartz tube-flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (SQT-FAAS). Influential parameters of the extraction procedure were optimized by altering one parameter while keeping the other parameters constant. The optimum conditions were selected as 10 mg of Zr-NPs, 75 s vortex period, and 200 µL of concentrated HCl for 30 mL of sample/standard solution. The linear range of the developed method was found to be between 25 and 100 µg/L, and the respective limits of detection and quantification were 5.3 and 18 µg/L. About 415 folds enhancement in detection power was achieved by the optimized method relative to the conventional FAAS. Green tea samples were spiked and used for recovery experiments and the results obtained were between 92 and 102%.

Abstract
Over the past years, there is an increasing demand for healthy, natural foods. Due to the high content of betalains, beetroots are widely used in the food industry as a natural colorant. In this study, beetroot juices are shown as a great source of selenium compounds. The juices were purchased from a local store and the ecological one was purchased form organic street market. The content of organic selenium species, as well as betalains, were evaluated using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) chromatography. The concentrations of selenomethionine (SeMet) and methylselenocysteine (MeSeCys) in analyzed juices were comparable except for juice from ecological cultivation. In that case, the concentration of SeMet is the highest of all studied juices, but simultaneously the concentration of MeSeCys was the lowest one. No traces of major inorganic species of Se, such as Se(IV) and Se(VI) was detected. The reducing power of juices evaluated by Folin-Ciocalteu assay was in range 50.78-166.7 mg GA/L. Juices obtained from beetroot from ecological cultivation showed the highest ability to scavenge the 1,1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals. There was a correlation between the yellow pigment content and the presence of selenocysteine in studied juices.

Abstract
Fluorescent "turn-off" sensors based on double quantum dots (QDs) has attracted increasing attention in the detection of many materials due to their properties such as more useful information, higher fluorescence efficiency and stability compared with the fluorescent "turn-off" sensors based on single QDs. In this work, highly sensitive and specific method for recognition of 53 different famous green teas was developed based on the fluorescent "turn-off" model with water-soluble ZnCdSe-CdTe double QDs. The fluorescence of the two QDs can be quenched by different teas with varying degrees, which results in the differences in positions and intensities of two peaks. By the combination of classic partial least square discriminant analysis (PLSDA), all the green teas can be discriminated with high sensitivity, specificity and a satisfactory recognition rate of 100% for training set and 100% for prediction set, respectively. The fluorescent "turn-off" sensors based on the single QDs (either ZnCdSe QDs or CdTe QDs) coupled with PLSDA were also employed to recognize the 53 famous green teas with unsatisfactory results. Therefore, the fluorescent "turn-off" sensors based on the double QDs is more appropriate for the large-class-number classification (LCNC) of green teas. Herein, we have demonstrated, for the first time, that so many kinds of famous green teas can be discriminated by the "turn-off" model of double QDs combined with chemometrics, which has largely extended the capability of traditional fluorescence and chemometrics, as well as exhibits great potential to perform LCNC in other practical applications.

Abstract
A novel ultrasound-assisted liquid phase microextraction (UALPME) based on environmental friendly extractants, deep eutectic solvent (DES) was first time presented for speciation of selenium. In present study, five DES solvents of different composition was prepared and used as efficient extractive medium for hydrophobic chelate of Se(IV) with 3,3'-Diaminobenzidine (DAB). The total inorganic Se species were determined after pre-reduction of Se(VI) to Se(IV), prior to applying developed method. The concentration of Se(VI) was calculated by the difference of Se(IV) values and total selenium contents. The concentration of Se in DES rich phase was measured with electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometer (ETAAS). The effects of different parameters on extraction efficiency of study analyte, including pH, ligand concentration, type and volume of DES, sonication time, volumes tetrahydrofuran and aqueous samples were examined. At the optimum conditions, limit of detection and quantification, preconcentration factor, and relative standard deviation (RSD %) were determined as 4.61ngL-1, 15.4ngL-1, 50% and 4.1%, respectively. The accuracy of the presented method was confirmed by analysis of certified reference material and standard addition method for different water and ice tea samples. The developed method was effectively applied to real water and food samples.

Abstract
AbstractResearch designed to improve extraction has led to the development of microextraction techniques (ME), which involve simple, low cost, and effective preconcentrationof analytes in various matrices. This review is concerned with the principles and theoretical background of ME, as well as the development of applications for selenium analysis during the period from 2008 to 2016. Among all ME, dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction was found to be most favorable for selenium. On the other hand, atomic absorption spectrometry was the most frequently used instrumentation. Selenium ME have rarely been coupled to spectrophotometry and X-ray spectrophotometry methods, and there is no published application of ME with electrochemical techniques. We strongly support the idea of using a double preconcentration process, which consists of microextraction prior to preconcentration, followed by selenium determination using cathodic stripping voltammetry (ME-CSV). More attention should focus on the development of accurate, precise, and green methods for selenium analysis.

Abstract
A rapid and effective suspended dispersive solid phase microextraction (SDSPME) was developed for the speciation of inorganic selenium using alumina nanoparticles functionalized with Aliquat-336. The target analytes were preconcentrated and determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Alumina nanoparticles were characterized using XRD, BET, SEM and EDX while the functionalized nano-Al2O3 was characterized by FTIR. The effect of pH of the solution on speciation Se in water samples was optimized separately. It was observed that when the pH values of sample solution ranged from 2.0 to 7.0, successful separation of inorganic Se species was achieved. The percentage recoveries for Se (IV) and Se (VI) were >90% and 5%, respectively. The two-level fractional factorial design was used to optimize experimental parameters affecting the preconcentration system. Under optimal conditions, the enrichment factor (EF), limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification for Se (IV) were found to be 850, 1.4ngL(-1,) and 4.6ngL(-1), respectively. Furthermore, intra-day and inter-day precisions expressed in terms of relative standard deviation (RSD) were found to be 1.9% and 3.3%, respectively. The effect of coexisting ions on the recovery of Se (IV) was investigated. The accuracy of the developed method was checked by analysis of standard reference material (NIST SRM 1643e). The optimized method was applied for the determination of targets in surface water samples.

Abstract
A novel, simple and rapid method based on magnetic effervescent tablet-assisted ionic liquid dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (MEA-IL-DLLME) followed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) determination was established for the speciation of selenium in various food and beverage samples. In the procedure, a special magnetic effervescent tablet containing CO2 sources (sodium carbonate and sodium dihydrogenphosphate), ionic liquids and Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) was used to combine extractant dispersion and magnetic recovery procedures into a single step. The parameters influencing the microextraction efficiency, such as pH of the sample solution, volume of ionic liquid, amount of MNPs, concentration of the chelating agent, salt effect and matrix effect were investigated and optimised. Under the optimised conditions, the limits of detection (LODs) for Se(IV) were 0.021 μg l(-)(1) and the linear dynamic range was 0.05-5.0 μg l(-)(1). The relative standard deviation for seven replicate measurements of 1.0 μg l(-)(1) of Se(IV) was 2.9%. The accuracy of the developed method was evaluated by analysis of the standard reference materials (GBW10016 tea, GBW10017 milk powder, GBW10043 Liaoning rice, GBW10046 Henan wheat, GBW10048 celery). The proposed method was successfully applied to food and beverage samples including black tea, milk powder, mushroom, soybean, bamboo shoots, energy drink, bottled water, carbonated drink and mineral water for the speciation of Se(IV) and Se(VI) with satisfactory relative recoveries (92.0-108.1%).

Abstract
Selenium is an important element for human health, and it is present in many natural drinks and foods. Present study described a new method using dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction prior to high-performance liquid chromatography with a UV variable wavelength detector for the determination of the total selenium, Se(IV), Se(VI), and total organoselenium in tea samples. In the procedure, 2,3-diaminonaphthalene was used as the chelating reagent, 400 μL acetonitrile was used as the disperser solvent and 60 μL chlorobenzene was used as the extraction solvent. The complex of Se(IV) and 2,3-diaminonaphthalene in the final extracted phase was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The factors influencing the derivatization and microextraction were investigated. Under the optimal conditions, the limit of detection was 0.11 μg/L for Se(IV) and the linearity range was in the range of 0.5-40 μg/L. This method was successfully applied to the determination of selenium in four tea samples with spiked recoveries ranging from 91.3 to 100%.
