Formation, physicochemical properties, and biological activities of theabrownins

Theabrownins (TBs) are heterogeneous mixtures of water-soluble brown tea pigments, and important constituents to evaluate the quality of dark tea. TBs have numerous hydroxyl and carboxyl groups and are formed by the oxidative polymerization of tea polyphenols. Many biological activities attributed to TBs, including antioxidant, anti-obesity, and lipid-regulating, have been demonstrated. This review summarizes the research progress made on the formation mechanism and physicochemical properties of TBs. It also discusses their protective effects against various diseases and associated potential molecular mechanisms. Additionally, it examines the signaling pathways mediating the bioactivities of TBs and highlights the difficulties and challenges of TBs research as well as their research prospects and applications.

Genome-wide identification of HMT gene family explores BpHMT2 enhancing selenium accumulation and tolerance in Broussonetia papyrifera

Broussonetia papyrifera, a valuable feed resource, is known for its fast growth, wide adaptability, high protein content and strong selenium enrichment capacity. Selenomethionine (SeMet), the main selenium form in selenium fortification B. papyrifera, is safe for animals and this enhances its nutritional value as a feed resource. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying SeMet synthesis remain unclear. This study identified three homocysteine S-methyltransferase genes from the B. papyrifera genome. The phylogenetic tree demonstrated that BpHMTs were divided into two classes, and BpHMT2 in the Class 2-D subfamily evolved earlier and possesses more fundamental functions. On the basis of the correlation between gene expression levels and selenium content, BpHMT2 was identified as a key candidate gene associated with selenium tolerance. Subcellular localization experiments confirmed the targeting of BpHMT2 in nucleus, cell membrane and chloroplasts. Moreover, three BpHMT2 overexpression Arabidopsis thaliana lines were confirmed to enhance plant selenium tolerance and SeMet accumulation. Overall, our finding provides insights into the molecular mechanisms of selenium metabolism in B. papyrifera, highlighting the potential role of BpHMT2 in SeMet synthesis. This research contributes to our understanding of selenium-enriched feed resources, with increased SeMet content contributing to the improved nutritional value of B. papyrifera as a feed resource.

A new scheme of PM2.5 and O3 control strategies with the integration of SOM, GA and WRF-CAMx

Previous air pollution control strategies didn't pay enough attention to regional collaboration and the spatial response sensitivities, resulting in limited control effects in China. This study proposed an effective PM2.5 and O3 control strategy scheme with the integration of Self-Organizing Map (SOM), Genetic Algorithm (GA) and WRF-CAMx, emphasizing regional collaborative control and the strengthening of control in sensitive areas. This scheme embodies the idea of hierarchical management and spatial-temporally differentiated management, with SOM identifying the collaborative subregions, GA providing the optimized subregion-level priority of precursor emission reductions, and WRF-CAMx providing response sensitivities for grid-level priority of precursor emission reductions. With Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and the surrounding area (BTHSA, "2 + 26" cities) as the case study area, the optimized strategy required that regions along Taihang Mountains strengthen the emission reductions of all precursors in PM2.5-dominant seasons, and strengthen VOCs reductions but moderate NOx reductions in O3-dominant season. The spatiotemporally differentiated control strategy, without additional emission reduction burdens than the 14th Five-Year Plan proposed, reduced the average annual PM2.5 and MDA8 O3 concentrations in 28 cities by 3.2%-8.2% and 3.9%-9.7% respectively in comparison with non-differential control strategies, with the most prominent optimization effects occurring in the heavily polluted seasons (6.9%-18.0% for PM2.5 and 3.3%-14.2% for MDA8 O3, respectively). This study proposed an effective scheme for the collaborative control of PM2.5 and O3 in BTHSA, and shows important methodological implications for other regions suffering from similar air quality problems.

Preparation, characterization and cytotoxicity assessment of a novel selenized polysaccharide from Morchella sextelata

Selenylation modification has been widely developed to improve the biological effects of natural polysaccharides. In this study, a purified new polysaccharide (MSP-4) was isolated from Morchella Sextelata, and selenized into SeMSP-4 using the HNO3-Na2SeO3 method. The selenium (Se) content of SeMSP-4 was 101.81 ± 9.90 mg/kg, and the molecular weight of SeMSP-4 was 1.23 × 105 Da. The FT-IR, XRD and AFM results showed that MSP-4 was successfully combined with the Se element. The structure characters of SeMSP-4 were analyzed by methylation analysis combined with 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. And, the radical scavenging test revealed that SeMSP-4 exhibited higher antioxidant capacities in vitro than MSP-4. The cytotoxicity analysis indicated that SeMSP-4 could dose-dependently inhibit the proliferation of HepG2 and HeLa cells, but did not show a cytotoxic effect on normal cells (HEK293). Furthermore, SeMSP-4 stimulation significantly increased the macrophage viability and enhanced NO production in macrophage cells. This study suggested that SeMSP-4 could be utilized as a potential selenium source with antioxidant, antitumor, and immunostimulatory activities.

Research on regional ozone prevention and control strategies in eastern China based on pollutant transport network and FNR

O3 pollution in China has worsened sharply in recent years, and O3 formation sensitivity (OFS) in many regions have gradually changed, with eastern China as the most typical region. This study constructed the transport networks of O3 and NO2 in different seasons from 2017 to 2020. The transport trends and the clustering formation patterns were summarized by analyzing the topological characteristics of the transport networks, and the patterns of OFS changes were diagnosed by analyzing the satellite remote sensing data. Based on that, the main clusters that each province or city belongs to in different pollutant transport networks were summarized and proposals for the inter-regional joint prevention and control were put forward. As the results showed, O3 transport activity was most active in spring and summer and least active in winter, while NO2 transport activity was most active in autumn and winter and least active in summer. OFS in summer mainly consisted of transitional regimes and NOx-limited regimes, while that in other seasons was mainly VOC-limited regimes. Notably, there was a significant upward trend in the proportion of transitional regimes and NOx-limited regimes in spring, autumn, and winter. For regions showing NOx-limited regime, areas with higher out-weighted degrees in the NO2 transport network should focus on controlling local NOx emissions, such as central regions in summer. For regions showing VOC-limited regime, areas with higher out-weighted degrees in the O3 transport network should focus on controlling local VOCs emissions, such as central and south-central regions in summer. For regions that belong to the same cluster and present the same OFS in each specific season, regional cooperative emission reduction strategies should be established to block important transmission paths and weaken regional pollution consistency.

Cloning and functional analysis of Gb4CL1 and Gb4CL2 from Ginkgo biloba

4-Coumarate-CoA ligase (4CL) gene plays vital roles in plant growth and development, especially the regulation of lignin metabolism and flavonoid synthesis. To investigate the potential function of 4CL in the lignin biosynthesis of Ginkgo biloba, this study identified two 4CL genes, Gb4CL1 and Gb4CL2, from G. biloba genome. Based on the phylogenetic tree analysis, Gb4CL1 and Gb4CL2 protein were classified into Class I, which has been confirmed to be involved in lignin biosynthesis. Therefore, it can be inferred that these two genes may also participate in lignin metabolism. The tissue-specific expression patterns of these two genes revealed that Gb4CL1 was highly expressed in microstrobilus, whereas Gb4CL2 was abundant in immature leaves. The onion transient expression assay indicated that Gb4CL1 was predominantly localized in the nucleus, indicating its potential involvement in nuclear functions, while Gb4CL2 was observed in the cell wall, suggesting its role in cell wall-related processes. Phytohormone response analysis revealed that the expression of both genes was upregulated in response to indole acetic acid, while methyl jasmonate suppressed it, gibberellin exhibited opposite effects on these genes. Furthermore, Gb4CL1 and Gb4CL2 expressed in all tissues containing lignin that showed a positive correlation with lignin content. Thus, these findings suggest that Gb4CL1 and Gb4CL2 are likely involved in lignin biosynthesis. Gb4CL1 and Gb4CL2 target proteins were successfully induced in Escherichia coli BL21 with molecular weights of 85.5 and 89.2 kDa, proving the integrity of target proteins. Our findings provided a basis for revealing that Gb4CL participated in lignin synthesis in G. biloba.

Effects of Supplementing Selenium-Enriched Cardamine violifolia to Laying Hens on Egg Quality and Yolk Antioxidant Capacity during Storage at 4 °C and 25 °C

Oxidative stress occurs in the process of egg storage. Antioxidants as feed additives can enhance egg quality and extend the shelf life of eggs. Selenium-enriched Cardamine violifolia (SEC) has strongly antioxidant properties. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of dietary supplementation with SEC on egg quality and the yolk antioxidant capacity of eggs stored at 4 °C and 25 °C. Four hundred fifty 65-week-old, Roman hens that were similar in laying rate (90.79 ± 1.69%) and body weight (2.19 ± 0.23 kg) were divided into 5 groups. The birds were fed diets supplemented with 0 mg/kg selenium (Se) (CON), 0.3 mg/kg Se from sodium selenite (SS), 0.3 mg/kg Se from Se-enriched yeast (SEY), 0.3 mg/kg Se for selenium-enriched Cardamine violifolia (SEC) or 0.3 mg/kg Se from Se-enriched Cardamine violifolia and 0.3 mg/kg Se from Se-enriched yeast (SEC + SEY) for 8 weeks. The eggs were collected on the 8th week and were analyzed for egg quality and oxidative stability of yolk during storage at 4 °C or 25 °C for 0, 2, 4, or 6 weeks. Dietary SEC and SEC + SEY supplementation increased the Haugh unit (HU) and albumen foam stability in eggs stored at 4 °C and 25 °C (p < 0.05). SS and SEC supplementation increased the yolk index in eggs stored at 25 °C (p < 0.05). SEC or SEC + SEY slowed down an increase in albumen pH and gel firmness in eggs stored at 4 °C and 25 °C (p < 0.05). Moreover, SEC or SEC + SEY alleviated the increase in malonaldehyde (MDA), and the decrease in total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) level and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activity in yolks stored at 4 °C and 25 °C (p < 0.05). These results indicate that SEC mitigated egg quality loss and improved the antioxidant capacity of yolks during storage. SEC supplementation would be advantageous to extend the shelf life of eggs.

Severe photochemical pollution was found in large petrochemical complexes: A typical case study in North China

Large petrochemical complex (PC) widely exists in both developing and developed countries, and is expected to have a special photochemical pollution in local scale due to huge VOCs emissions. Here, a typical large-scale PC in North China was selected as the study case, to explore the character, formation and influence of local photochemical pollution regarding PCs based on an improved 0-D chemical model. In the study PC, VOCs-rich character was apparent with THCs level of 90.8 ± 28.0 ppb and THCs/NOx ratio of ∼26.2 mol/mol. Severe O3 pollution was found in warm months with monthly mean MDA1O3 of 67.3-96.0 ppb. Model simulations showed the heavy O3 pollution in this PC was attributed to high precursors rather than to unfavorable meteorology, and was more sensitive to NOx (with response of 1.42 g/g) than to THCs (with response of 0.12 g/g). The photochemical pollution formation potential of the emission plumes of this PC was very enormous, with production rate of 19.6 ppb h-1 for O3, 2.9 ppb h-1 for HCHO and 1.1 ppb h-1 for CH3CHO on daytime average, 1-5 greater than in normal urban areas. The higher production rates happened in morning hours, which explained the earlier peak time of observed O3 in PCs. And about 70% of photochemical pollution (represented by O3) would be transported to surroundings, leading to the significant photochemical-pollution hazard to the vicinity of PCs.

Genomic-wide identification and expression analysis of AP2/ERF transcription factors in Zanthoxylum armatum reveals the candidate genes for the biosynthesis of terpenoids

Terpenoids are the main active components in the Zanthoxylum armatum leaves, which have extensive medicinal value. The Z. armatum leaf is the main by-product in the Z. armatum industry. However, the transcription factors involved in the biosynthesis of terpenoids are rarely reported. This study was performed to identify and classify the APETALA2/ethylene-responsive factor (AP2/ERF) gene family of Z. armatum. The chromosome distribution, gene structure, conserved motifs, and cis-acting elements of the promoter of the species were also comprehensively analyzed. A total of 214 ZaAP2/ERFs were identified. From the obtained transcriptome and terpenoid content data, four candidate ZaAP2/ERFs involved in the biosynthesis of terpenoids were selected via correlation and weighted gene co-expression network analysis. A phylogenetic tree was constructed using 13 AP2/ERFs related to the biosynthesis of terpenoids in other plants. ZaERF063 and ZaERF166 showed close evolutionary relationships with the ERFs in other plant species and shared a high AP2-domain sequence similarity with the two closest AP2/ERF proteins, namelySmERF8 from Salvia miltiorrhiza and AaERF4 from Artemisia annua. Further investigation into the effects of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatment on the content of terpenoids in Z. armatum leaves revealed that MeJA significantly induced the upregulation of ZaERF166 and led to a significant increase in the terpenoids content in Z. armatum leaves, indicating that ZaERF166 might be involved in the accumulation of terpenoids of Z. armatum. Results will be beneficial for the functional characterization of AP2/ERFs in Z. armatum and establishment of the theoretical foundation to increase the production of terpenoids via the manipulation of the regulatory elements and strengthen the development and utilization of Z. armatum leaves.

Comparative proteomic analysis of cerebral cortex revealed neuroprotective mechanism of esculentoside A on Alzheimer's disease

Esculentoside A (EsA), isolated from phytolacca esculenta, is a saponin showing neuroprotective effect in the mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD). To investigate its action target and underlying mechanism, this study used the proteomics technique of isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) to analyze the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in the cerebral cortex of EsA-treated and untreated triple-transgenic 3 × Tg-AD model mice. Proteomic comparison revealed 250, 436, and 903 DEPs in three group pairs, i.e. AD/Wild-type (WT), AD+5 mg/kg EsA/AD, AD+10 mg/kg EsA/AD, respectively. Among them 28 DEPs were commonly shared by three group pairs, and 25 of them showed reversed expression levels in the diseased group under the treatment of both doses of EsA. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that these DEPs were mainly linked to metabolism, synapses, apoptosis, learning and memory. EsA treatment restored the expression of these proteins, including amyloid precursor protein (APP), cathepsin B (Cstb), 4-aminobutyrate aminotransferase (Abat), 3-phosphoinositide-dependent protein kinase-1 (PDK1), carnitine palmitoyltransferase1 (Cpt1) and synaptotagmin 17 (Syt17), thereby ameliorated the spatial learning and memory of AD mice. Collectively, this study reveals for the first time the profound effect of EsA on the cerebral cortex of AD mice, which might be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of AD.

Aerosol-radiation interaction and its variation in North China within 2015-2019 period under continuous PM2.5 improvements

A study was conducted on aerosol-radiation interactions over six cities in this region within the 2015-2019 period. WRF-Chem simulations on 2017 showed that based on the six-city average, the aerosol load (PM2.5 concentrations) of 121.9, 49.6, 43.3, and 66.3 µg/m3 in January, April, July, and October, mainly lowered the level of downward shortwave radiation by 38.9, 24.0, 59.1, and 24.4 W/m2 and reduced the boundary layer height by 79.9, 40.8, 87.4, and 31.0 m, via scattering and absorbing solar radiation. The sensitivity of meteorological changes to identical aerosol loads varied in the order July > January > October and April. Then, the cooling and stabilizing effects of aerosols further led to increases in PM2.5, by 23.0, 3.4, 4.6, and 7.3 µg/m3 respectively in the four months. The sensitivity of the effect of aerosols on PM2.5 was greatest in January rather than in July, contrary to the effect on meteorology. Moreover, a negative linear relation was observed between daily BLH reductions and aerosol loads in fall and winter, and between PM2.5 increases and aerosol loads in all seasons. With the PM2.5 pollution improvements in this region, the aerosol radiative forcing was effectively reduced. This should result in daily BLH increases of 10-24 m in fall and winter, and the estimates in Beijing agreed well with the corresponding results based on AMDAR data. Additionally, the reduction in aerosol radiation effects brought about daily PM2.5 decreases of 1.6-2.8 µg/m3, accounting for 7.0%-17.7% in PM2.5 improvements.

Green tea polysaccharide conjugates and bovine serum albumin have a synergistic effect in improving the emulsification ability

Our previous study revealed that green tea polysaccharide conjugate (gTPC) has emulsion effect, but its emulsifying ability is weak. In order to improve the emulsification ability of gTPC, gTPC and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were combined to form five different mass proportions of the TPC/BSA (TB) complex: TPC/BSA: 5:1, 5:2, 5:3, 5:4, and 5:5 w/w. We observed that the 5:5 w/w TB emulsion was more hydrophobic and surface-active. Furthermore, the emulsions prepared using 50.00 wt% medium-chain triglycerides exhibited the best stability. In addition, the TB emulsion exhibited stability in adverse environments of pH, salt, and heat; in particular, under salt conditions, no significant changes were observed in zeta potential. Subsequently, in vitro simulated digestion experiments were performed to investigate the use of TB emulsions for β-carotene encapsulation. We observed that the encapsulation efficiency for β-carotene was approximately 90.0 %; it was subsequently released in the intestine.

Selenium-Enriched Cardamine violifolia Alleviates LPS-Induced Hepatic Damage and Inflammation by Suppressing TLR4/NODs-Necroptosis Signal Axes in Piglets

Selenium-enriched Cardamine violifolia (SEC), a cruciferous plant, exerts excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity, but its effect on hepatic function is unclear. This study investigated the effect and potential mechanism of SEC on hepatic injury induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Twenty-four weaned piglets were randomly allotted to treatment with SEC (0.3 mg/kg Se) and/or LPS (100 μg/kg). After 28 days of the trial, pigs were injected with LPS to induce hepatic injury. These results indicated that SEC supplementation attenuated LPS-induced hepatic morphological injury and reduced aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities in plasma. SEC also inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) after the LPS challenge. In addition, SEC improved hepatic antioxidant capacity via enhancing glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity and decreasing malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration. Moreover, SEC downregulated the mRNA expression of hepatic myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) and nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain proteins 1 (NOD1) and its adaptor molecule receptor interacting protein kinase 2 (RIPK2). SEC also alleviated LPS-induced hepatic necroptosis by inhibiting RIPK1, RIPK3, and mixed-lineage kinase domain-like (MLKL) expression. These data suggest that SEC potentially mitigates LPS-induced hepatic injury via inhibiting Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/NOD2 and necroptosis signaling pathways in weaned piglets.

Determining an optimal control strategy for anthropogenic VOC emissions in China based on source emissions and reactivity

An evidence-based control strategy for emission reduction of VOC sources can effectively solve the regional PM2.5 and O3 compound pollution in China. We estimated the anthropogenic VOC emission inventory in China in 2018 and established a source profile database containing 129 sources based on localized detection and the latest research results. Then, the distribution of the ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) for emission sources was analyzed. Moreover, priority control routes for VOC emission sources were proposed for different periods. Anthropogenic VOC emissions in China reached 27,211.8 Gg in 2018, and small passenger cars, industrial protective coatings, biomass burning, heavy trucks, printing, asphalt paving, oil storage and transportation, coking, and oil refining were the main contributors. Industrial protective coatings, small passenger cars, and biomass burning all contributed significantly to OFP and SOAFP. Priority in emission reduction control should be given to industrial protective coatings, small passenger cars, heavy trucks, coking, printing, asphalt paving, chemical fibers, and basic organic chemical sources over the medium and long term in China. In addition, the priority control route for VOC emission sources should be adjusted according to the variations in VOC emission characteristics and regional differences, so as to obtain the maximum environmental benefits.

Fabrication of ammonia and acetic acid-responsive intelligent films based on grape skin anthocyanin via adjusting the pH of film-forming solution

pH-responsive intelligent films for food freshness monitoring have attracted great attentions recently. In this study, several intelligent films based on chitosan (CS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and grape skin anthocyanin (GSA) were prepared, and the effect of film-forming solution pH on the properties of intelligent films was investigated. The results of SEM, FTIR, XRD and TGA displayed that the hydrogen bond between CS and GSA was strong at strong acidic conditions (2.0-2.5), and it weakened at weak acidic conditions (3.0-4.5). Meanwhile, the hydrogen bond between PVA and GSA was negligible under strong acidic conditions, and it appeared under weak acidic conditions. Consequently, the films fabricated under weak acidic conditions displayed lower water solubility, lower water vapor permeability, and higher elongation at break. The tensile strength of films increased firstly and subsequently decreased with pH increasing, reaching a maximum value of 31.44 MPa at pH 3.5. Additionally, the films prepared at pH 2.5 and 4.0 showed the best color responsiveness to ammonia and acetic acid, respectively. Overall, the intelligent films prepared under variant pH have the potential to realize the goal of monitoring the freshness of different types of food, thereby expanding the application subject of anthocyanins-based intelligent films.

Reductions of multiple air pollutants from coking industry through technology improvements and their impacts on air quality and health risks in a highly industrialized region of China

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, a highly industrialized area in China, boasts a concentration of coking plants that constitute a vital component of the steel industry. In recent years, the Chinese government has implemented measures including backward production capacity elimination (BPCE), ultra-low emission technology transformation (ULET), and deep treatment of volatile organic compounds (DTV), to promote technological progress in the coking industry and mitigate the impact of pollutant emissions. This study focuses on the emission trends, reduction effects of various measures, and the impact on air quality and human health in the regional scale. The findings reveal that in 2015, the emissions of PM, SO2, NOx and VOCs of the coking industry in BTH region were 29.15, 9.64, 26.62 and 82.99 Gg (1000 tons/year) respectively. However, by 2019, these emissions had significantly decreased by 19.95, 5.78, 18.69, and 22.53 Gg, respectively. Of these reductions, ULET contributed about 80.3 % of NOx and SO2, and 57.4 % of PM. Meanwhile, DTV and BPCE contributed 49.2 % and 50.7 % of VOCs emission reduction, respectively. Despite the improvement effect on PM2.5, SO2, and NO2 is limited, the substantial decrease in VOCs (particularly benzene) resulted in a significant reduction in the coking industry's contribution to the atmospheric benzene concentration, dropping from 15.9 % in 2015 to 11.6 % in 2019. Moreover, the lifetime cancer risk (LCR) contribution of benzene inhalation in the BTH region also decreased from 1.7 × 10-6 to 1.2 × 10-6. Looking ahead to 2025, the continued implementation of DTV will be expected to reduce VOCs emissions by 24.41Gg. This will bring the industry's contribution to the benzene concentration down to 6.8 % and the cancer risk of the population to an acceptable level (LCR < 1 × 10-6). Additionally, the deep treatment of VOCs in coking plants will significantly reduce the health risks faced by people living in the vicinity of the plants.

[Epidemiological characteristics of a local cluster epidemic caused by the BA.2 evolutionary branch of Omicron variant]

Descriptive epidemiological methods were used to analyze the epidemiological characteristics of the local cluster of COVID-19 in the logistic park of Yuhang District in Hangzhou in March 2022. The cluster epidemic was detected by a case who actively visited the fever clinic. The epidemic lasted for 8 days, and a total of 58 cases (53 workers, 2 students, 1 farmer, 1 teacher and 1 unemployed) were found, including 40 males and 18 females. The age was (33.29±12.22) years. There cases were mainly in Yuhang District (48 cases, 82.77%) and Shangcheng District (7 cases, 12.07%) of Hangzhou. The real-time regeneration number peaked at 2.31 on March 10th and decreased to 0.37 on March 15th. The sequencing result of the indicated case was 100% homologous with the sequence uploaded from South Korea on March 4th, 2022.

Emission inventory and air quality impact of non-road construction equipment in different emission stages

Non-road construction equipment (NRCE) is an important source of air pollution, and it is crucial to fully understand the impact of NRCE on atmospheric PM2.5 and O3 pollution. However, systematic assessment of the impact of NRCE emissions on the atmosphere is lacking, especially with the latest implementation of the Stage IV Standard, and current research progress is insufficient for the development of effective control measures. This study estimated NRCE emission inventories at different emission standard stages and their impact on the atmosphere, using the "2 + 26" cities as the case study area. The results showed that the total NRCE emissions of CO, NOx, VOC, and PM2.5 were 387, 418, 82, and 24 kt in 2015 and 319, 262, 62, and 15 kt in 2020 and are predicted to be 270, 226, 48, and 10 kt in 2025, respectively. Simulation results showed that the contributions of NRCE to NO3-, NO2, PM2.5, and O3 were 16.7 %, 18.9 %, 7.7 %, and 8.2 % in 2015 to 13.6 %, 18.4 %, 6.5 %, and 6.7 % in 2020, respectively. In both 2015 and 2020, NRCE emissions in southern cities showed greater impacts on the average concentrations in the "2 + 26" cities than those in northern cities. The contributions of local NRCE emissions to local PM2.5 and O3 concentrations in the 28 cities ranged from 30 %-59 % and 13 %-39 %, respectively. The O3 sensitivity estimated by the HDDM illustrated that nonlinear characteristics highlighted the importance of coordinated control of NOx and VOC and can inspire development of post-processing technology and electricity substitution. The belt-like area connecting Zhengzhou to Beijing showed higher exposure concentrations of PM2.5 and O3, and the concentration exposure in urban areas was much higher than that in the rural and other areas. The environmental impact assessment of NRCE emissions can provide guidance for its management and development.

Spatial clustering and spillover pathways analysis of O3, NO2, and CO in eastern China during 2017-2021

The eastern China presented the most serious O3 pollution and increasingly prominent regional characteristics. To understand the transport characteristics of O3 and its precursors and identify their potential relationships are of great guiding significance for interregional joint prevention and control. In this study, the annual and seasonal transport networks of O3 and its precursors (NO2 and CO) during 2017-2021 were constructed by applying the complex network method to air quality observations. And the key spatial clusters, the spillover paths and the potential links among pollutants were comprehensively analyzed based on the topological characteristic analysis of the established air pollutant transport networks. As the results showed, O3 pollution in the eastern China was affected by active regional transports of O3 and its precursors. Regional transports of O3, NO2, and CO were more prominent in autumn and showed high synchronization. The regional transport of precursors, especially NOx, was an important cause of regional O3 pollution. Air pollutant transport characteristics varied with seasons and regions, which demonstrating the importance of regulating seasonal and regional differentiated joint prevention and control strategies, especially for NOx. The results of this study can provide science-based guidance for the regional cooperative control of O3 pollution in the eastern China, and the application of complex networks can also provide a new methodological perspective for the study of air pollution transmission.

Systemic subchronic toxicity and comparison of four selenium nutritional supplements by 90-day oral exposure in Sprague-Dawley rats

To evaluate and compare the safety of four selenium supplements, namely Se-enriched peptides (SeP), yeast selenium (SeY), L-Se-methylselenocysteine (L-SeMc) and sodium selenite (Na2SeO3), the subchronic toxicity study was designed by 90-day gavage administration in Sprague-Dawley rats. The doses of SeP, SeY, L-SeMc and Na2SeO3 were 0.15, 0.30 and 0.60 mg/kg bw/day, with additional dose of 0.45 mg/kg L-SeMc (All dose calculated as Se). Symptoms like growling, hair loss and significant weight loss were found at 0.60 mg/kg of L-SeMc, but not in other groups. At the dose of 0.60 mg/kg, females in Na2SeO3, SeY and L-SeMc groups showed significant elevations in ALT and/or ALP. Pathologic manifestations such as bile duct hyperplasia and cholestasis were predominantly found in females at 0.6 mg/kg of L-SeMc and SeY groups, and in males at same dose of L-SeMc group showed marked testicular atrophy. 0.60 mg/kg of SeY and Na2SeO3, and 0.30, 0.45, 0.60 mg/kg of L-SeMc induced significant reductions in sperm motility rates, rapid movement and amount. In conclusion, the NOAEL of SeP, SeY, L-SeMc, Na2SeO3 was all 0.30 mg/kg for female, and 0.60, 0.30, 0.15 and 0.30 mg/kg for male respectively. Liver and reproductive organs are possible toxic target organs of hyper selenium.

Protective effects of luteolin against amyloid beta-induced oxidative stress and mitochondrial impairments through peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ-dependent mechanism in Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the deposition of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides and dysfunction of mitochondrion, which result in neuronal apoptosis and ultimately cognitive impairment. Inhibiting Aβ generation and repairing mitochondrial damage are prominent strategies in AD therapeutic treatment. Luteolin, a flavonoid compound, exhibits anti-inflammatory neuroprotective properties in AD mice. However, it is still unclear whether luteolin has any effect on Aβ pathology and mitochondrial dysfunction. In this study, the beneficial effect and underlying mechanism of luteolin were investigated in triple transgenic AD (3 × Tg-AD) mice and primary neurons. Our study showed that luteolin supplement significantly ameliorated memory and cognitive impairment of AD mice and exerted neuroprotection by inhibiting Aβ generation, repairing mitochondrial damage and reducing neuronal apoptosis. Further research revealed that luteolin could directly bind with peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gama (PPARγ) to promote its expression and function. In the culture of hippocampus-derived primary neurons, addition of PPARγ antagonist GW9662 or knockdown of PPARγ with its siRNA could eliminate the effect of luteolin on AD pathologies. In summary, this work revealed for the first time that luteolin effectively improved cognitive deficits of 3 × Tg-AD mice and inhibited Aβ-induced oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and neuronal apoptosis via PPARγ-dependent mechanism. Hence, luteolin has the potential to serve as a therapeutic agent against AD.

Selenium-enriched Cardamine violifolia protects against sepsis-induced intestinal injury by regulating mitochondrial fusion in weaned pigs

Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by the dysregulated response of the host to an infection, and treatments are limited. Recently, a novel selenium source, selenium-enriched Cardamine violifolia (SEC) has attracted much attention due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but little is known about its role in the treatment of sepsis. Here, we found that SEC alleviated LPS-induced intestinal damage, as indicated by improved intestinal morphology, and increased disaccharidase activity and tight junction protein expression. Moreover, SEC ameliorated the LPS-induced release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, as indicated by decreased IL-6 level in the plasma and jejunum. Moreover, SEC improved intestinal antioxidant functions by regulating oxidative stress indicators and selenoproteins. In vitro, TNF-α-challenged IPEC-1 cells were examined and showed that selenium-enriched peptides, which are the main functional components extracted from Cardamine violifolia (CSP), increased cell viability, decreased lactate dehydrogenase activity and improved cell barrier function. Mechanistically, SEC ameliorated LPS/TNF-α-induced perturbations in mitochondrial dynamics in the jejunum and IPEC-1 cells. Moreover, CSP-mediated cell barrier function is primarily dependent on the mitochondrial fusion protein MFN2 but not MFN1. Taken together, these results indicate that SEC mitigates sepsis-induced intestinal injury, which is associated with modulating mitochondrial fusion.

[Tea consumption and cancer: a Mendelian randomization study]

Objective: A Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed to assess the relationship between tea consumption and cancer. Methods: There were 100 639 participants with the information of gene sequencing of whole genome in the China Kadoorie Biobank. After excluding those with cancer at baseline survey, a total of 100 218 participants were included in this study. The baseline information about tea consumption were analyzed, including daily tea consumption or not, cups of daily tea consumption, and grams of daily tea consumption. We used the two-stage least square method to evaluate the associations between three tea consumption variables and incidence of cancer and some subtypes, including stomach cancer, liver and intrahepatic bile ducts cancer, colorectal cancer, tracheobronchial and lung cancer, and female breast cancer. Multivariable MR and analysis only among nondrinkers were used to control the impact of alcohol consumption. Sensitivity analyses were also performed, including inverse variance weighting, weighted median, and MR-Egger. Results: We used 54, 42, and 28 SNPs to construct non-weighted genetic risk scores as instrumental variables for daily tea consumption or not, cups of daily tea consumption, and grams of daily tea consumption, respectively. During an average of (11.4±3.0) years of follow-up, 6 886 cases of cancer were recorded. After adjusting for age, age², sex, region, array type, and the first 12 genetic principal components, there were no significant associations of three tea consumption variables with the incidence of cancer and cancer subtypes. Compared with non-daily tea drinkers, the HR (95%CI) of daily tea drinkers for cancer and some subtypes, including stomach cancer, liver and intrahepatic bile ducts cancer, colorectal cancer, tracheobronchial and lung cancer, and female breast cancer, are respectively 0.99 (0.78-1.26), 1.17 (0.58-2.36), 0.86 (0.40-1.84), 0.85 (0.42-1.73), 1.39 (0.85-2.26) and 0.63 (0.28-1.38). After controlling the impact of alcohol consumption and performing multiple sensitivity analyses, the results were similar. Conclusion: There is no causal relationship between tea consumption and risk of cancer in population in China.

Transcriptome and physiological determination reveal the effects of selenite on the growth and selenium metabolism in mung bean sprouts

Selenium (Se) biofortification of crops has been studied to substantially improve the Se content in human dietary food intake. In the present study, Vigna radiata (mung bean) seeds were soaked in different concentrations of sodium selenite (Na₂SeO₃). Low concentration of selenite is conducive to seed germination and growth, and can increase the fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW) of sprouts. The concentration of Na₂SeO₃ lower than 50 mg/kg resulted in noticeable elongation in the stem and marginal elongation in root. Mung bean seeds soaked with 80 mg/kg Na₂SeO₃ accounted for 93.77% of organic Se after growing for about 5 days. Transcriptome data revealed that Se treatment enhances starch and sugar metabolism, along with the up-regulation of ribosomal protein and DNA synthesis related genes. Further analysis indicated that the mung bean seeds absorbed Na₂SeO₃ through PHT1.1 and NIP2. Se (IV) was transformed into Se (VI) and transported to stems, leaves and roots through cotyledons during the germination of bean sprouts. SULTR3;3 may play an important role in the transit process. Se (VI) or Se (IV) transported to the leaves was catalytically transformed into SeCys through SiR and CS, and SeCys is further converted to MeSeCys through SMT. Most SeCys were transformed into SeHCys through CBL, transported to plastids, and finally transformed into SeMet through Met Synthase.

O3 transport characteristics in eastern China in 2017 and 2021 based on complex networks and WRF-CMAQ-ISAM

Increasingly prominent pollution levels and strong regional characteristics of O₃, especially in economically developed eastern China, called for a regional cooperation strategy based on transport quantification. This study adopted the complex networks to construct the O₃ Transport Network (OTN) to explore characteristics in eastern China in the summer of 2017 and 2021, whose results were afterward verified with spatial source apportionment results simulated with WRF-CMAQ-ISAM. As OTN suggested, O₃ transport showed stronger and faster characteristics in eastern China in 2021 than in 2017, judging from changes in the network density, number of connections, transport ranges, and transport paths. Among all cluster communities, inland Shandong was the most important O₃ transport hub, the Central Community was the largest community, and the Southern Community showed the closest inter-city transport relationships. In- and out-weighted degrees in OTN showed relatively superior consistency with the transport matrix obtained with WRF-CMAQ-ISAM, and can be explained by wind fields. Generally, O₃ pollution in the whole eastern China showed more frequent intra-regional transport and more strengthened inter-city correlations in 2021 than in 2017, meanwhile, northerly and southerly cities exhibited strengthening and weakening trends in O₃ transport, respectively. Despite the completely different principles of complex networks and air quality models, their results were mutually verifiable. This study presented a comprehensive understanding of O₃ transport in eastern China for further formulation of regional collaborative strategies and provided the methodological verification for applying complex networks in the atmospheric environment field.

Multi-component emission characteristics and high-resolution emission inventory of non-road construction equipment (NRCE) in China

With the continuous abatement of industries and vehicles in the past years in China, the comprehensive understanding and scientific control of non-road construction equipment (NRCE) may play an important role in alleviating PM_2.5 and O₃ pollution in the next stage. In this study, the emission rates of CO, HC, NOx, PM_2.5, CO₂ and the component profiles of HC and PM_2.5 from 3 loaders, 8 excavators and 4 forklifts under different operating conditions were tested for a systematic representation of NRCE emission characteristics. With the fusion of field tests, construction land types and population distributions, the NRCE emission inventory with a 0.1° × 0.1° resolution in nationwide and with a 0.01° × 0.01° resolution in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region (BTH) were established. The sample testing results suggested prominent differences in instantaneous emission rates and the composition characteristics among different equipment and under different operating modes. Generally, for NRCE, the dominant components are OC and EC for PM_2.5, and HC and olefin for OVOC. Especially, the proportion of olefins in idling mode is much higher than that in working mode. The measurement-based emission factors of various equipment exceeded the Stage III standard to varying degrees. The high-resolution emission inventory suggested that highly developed central and eastern areas, represented by BTH, showed the most prominent emissions in China. This study is a systematic representations of China's NRCE emissions, and the NRCE emission inventory establishment method with multiple data fusion has important methodological reference value for other emission sources.

Synthesis, characterization, and cytotoxicity analysis of selenium nanoparticles stabilized by Morchella sextelata polysaccharide

Natural bioactive molecules have been widely used as stabilizers in the functional improvement of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) in recent years. In this study, Morchella sextelata polysaccharide (MSP) was introduced as a novel stabilizer for the synthesis of SeNPs based on the redox system of sodium selenite and ascorbic acid. The size, morphology, stability, and anti-cancer cell activities were respectively analyzed by various methods. The results showed that the synthesized SeNPs with MSP were 72.07 ± 0.53 nm in size, red in color, spherical in shape, and amorphous in nature. MSP-SeNPs showed high scavenging activity against DPPH and ABTS radicals. And, these MSP-SeNPs exhibited a significant anti-proliferation effect on human liver (HepG2) and cervical cancer (Hela) cells in vitro, while no significant cytotoxicity against normal human kidney cells (HK-2) was observed. Moreover, the mitochondria-dependent apoptosis pathway triggered by MSP-SeNPs in HepG2 cell was identified. The expression levels of p53, Bax, cytochrome c, caspase-3 and caspase-9 were all up-regulated in HepG2 cells after MSP-SeNPs treatment, while Bcl-2 expression was down-regulated. These results suggest that MSP-SeNPs have strong potential as the food supplement for application in cancer chemoprevention.

Nonlinear and lagged effects of VOCs on SOA and O3 and multi-model validated control strategy for VOC sources

VOCs, as the common precursor of PM_2.5 and O₃ pollution, has not been paid enough attention in the previous phase. How to implement scientific and effective emission reduction on VOC sources is the focus of the next step in improving the atmospheric environmental quality in China. In this study, based on observations of VOC species, PM₁ components and O₃, the distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was used to investigate the nonlinear and lagged effects of key VOC categories on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and O₃. The control priorities of sources were determined by combining the VOC source profiles, which were afterwards verified using the source reactivity method and Weather Research and Forecasting Model-Community Multi-scale Air Quality Model (WRF-CMAQ). Finally, the optimized control strategy of VOC source was proposed. The results showed that SOA was more sensitive to benzene and toluene, and single-chain aromatics, while O₃ was more sensitive to dialkenes, C₂-C₄ alkenes, and trimethylbenzenes. The optimized control strategy based on the total response increments (TRI) of VOC sources suggests that passenger cars, industrial protective coatings, trucks, coking, and steel making should be considered as the key sources for continuous emission reduction throughout the year in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region (BTH). Non-road, oil refining, glass manufacturing and catering sources should be strengthened in summer, while biomass burning, pharmaceutical manufacturing, oil storage and transportation, and synthetic resin need more emphasis in other seasons. The multi-model validated result can provide scientific guidance for more accurate and efficient VOCs reduction.

Temporal variations of urban re-suspended road dust characteristics and its vital contributions to airborne PM2.5/PM10 during a long period in Beijing

Re-suspended road dust RRD as RRD_2.5 and RRD₁₀ can even more easily enter the atmospheric environment, showing a kind of significant potential to influence atmospheric environment. A campaign of sampling RRD samples at 53 sites and aerosol samples at a representative urban site in Beijing in October 2014, January, April and July 2015 was accomplished, and combined with RRD in 2003, and 2016-2018 periods to investigate the seasonal variations of chemical components in RRD_2.5 and RRD₁₀, long-term evolutions of RRD characteristics in 2003-2018, and source composition changes of RRD. Meanwhile a technique based on Mg/Al indicator for effectively estimating contributions of RRD to PM was developed. It is found that pollution elements and water-soluble ions in RRD were largely enriched in RRD_2.5. The pollution elements presented an obvious seasonal variation in RRD_2.5, however showed various seasonal variations in RRD₁₀. These pollution elements in RRD, due to being mainly impacted by both increasing traffic activities and atmospheric pollution control measures, almost display a single-peak change in 2003-2018. The water-soluble ions in RRD_2.5 and RRD₁₀ presented various seasonal variations, and displayed an evident increase in 2003-2015. The source composition of RRD in 2003-2015 posed a significant change that traffic activities, crustal soil, secondary pollution species and biomass combustion became significant contributors to RRD. The contributions of RRD_2.5/RRD₁₀ to mineral aerosols in PM_2.5/PM₁₀ presented a similar seasonal variation. The synergistic effects of meteorological factors and anthropogenic activities in different seasons were significant motive force influencing the contributions of RRD to the mineral aerosols. The pollution elements Cr and Ni in RRD_2.5 were the significant contributors to PM_2.5, however, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb in RRD₁₀ were the important contributors to PM₁₀. The research will provide a new significant scientific guide for further controlling atmospheric pollution and improving air quality.

Exploring drivers of the aggravated surface O3 over North China Plain in summer of 2015-2019: Aerosols, precursors, and meteorology

Continuous aggravated surface O₃ over North China Plain (NCP) has attracted widely public concern. Herein, we evaluated the effects of changes in aerosols, precursor emissions, and meteorology on O₃ in summer (June) of 2015-2019 over NCP via 8 scenarios with WRF-Chem model. The simulated mean MDA8 O₃ in urban areas of 13 major cities in NCP increased by 17.1%∼34.8%, which matched well with the observations (10.8%∼33.1%). Meanwhile, the model could faithfully reproduce the changes in aerosol loads, precursors, and meteorological conditions. A relatively-even O₃ increase (+1.2%∼+3.9% for 24-h O₃ and +1.0%∼+3.8% for MDA8 O₃) was induced by PM_2.5 dropping, which was consistent with the geographic distribution of regional PM_2.5 reduction. Meanwhile, the NO₂ reduction coupled with a near-constant VOCs led to the elevated VOCs/NO_x ratios, and then caused O₃ rising in the areas under VOCs-limited regimes. Therein, the pronounced increases occurred in Handan, Xingtai, Shijiazhuang, Tangshan, and Langfang (+10.7%∼+13.6% for 24-h O₃ and +10.2%∼+12.2% for MDA8 O₃); while the increases in other cities were 5.7%∼10.5% for 24-h O₃ and 4.9%∼9.2% for MDA8 O₃. Besides, the meteorological fluctuations brought about the more noticeable O₃ increases in northern parts (+12.5%∼+13.5% for 24-h O₃ and +11.2%∼+12.4% for MDA8 O₃) than those in southern and central parts (+3.2%∼+9.3% for 24-h O₃ and +3.7%∼+8.8% for MDA8 O₃). The sum of the impacts of the three drivers reached 16.7%∼21.9%, which were comparable to the changes of the observed O₃. Therefore, exploring reasonable emissions-reduction strategies is essential for the ozone pollution mitigation over this region.

[Clinicopathologic characteristics and prognostic analysis of testicular diffuse large B-cell lymphoma]

Objective: To analyze the clinicopathologic characteristics and prognosis of testicular diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) . Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 68 patients with testicular DLBCL admitted to Ruijin Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine from October 2001 to April 2020. The gene mutation profile was evaluated by targeted sequencing (55 lymphoma-related genes) , and prognostic factors were analyzed. Results: A total of 68 patients were included, of whom 45 (66.2% ) had primary testicular DLBCL and 23 (33.8% ) had secondary testicular DLBCL. The proportion of secondary testicular DLBCL patients with Ann Arbor stage Ⅲ-Ⅳ (P<0.001) , elevated LDH (P<0.001) , ECOG score ≥ 2 points (P=0.005) , and IPI score 3-5 points (P<0.001) is higher than that of primary testicular DLBCL patients. Sixty-two (91% ) patients received rituximab in combination with cyclophosphamide, adriamycin, vincristine, and prednisone (R-CHOP) -based first-line regimen, whereas 54 cases (79% ) underwent orchiectomy prior to chemotherapy. Patients with secondary testicular DLBCL had a lower estimated 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) rate (16.5% vs 68.1% , P<0.001) and 5-year overall survival (OS) rate (63.4% vs 74.9% , P=0.008) than those with primary testicular DLBCL, and their complete remission rate (57% vs 91% , P=0.003) was also lower than that of primary testicular DLBCL. The ECOG scores of ≥2 (PFS: P=0.018; OS: P<0.001) , Ann Arbor stages Ⅲ-Ⅳ (PFS: P<0.001; OS: P=0.018) , increased LDH levels (PFS: P=0.015; OS: P=0.006) , and multiple extra-nodal involvements (PFS: P<0.001; OS: P=0.013) were poor prognostic factors in testicular DLBCL. Targeted sequencing data in 20 patients with testicular DLBCL showed that the mutation frequencies of ≥20% were PIM1 (12 cases, 60% ) , MYD88 (11 cases, 55% ) , CD79B (9 cases, 45% ) , CREBBP (5 cases, 25% ) , KMT2D (5 cases, 25% ) , ATM (4 cases, 20% ) , and BTG2 (4 cases, 20% ) . The frequency of mutations in KMT2D in patients with secondary testicular DLBCL was higher than that in patients with primary testicular DLBCL (66.7% vs 7.1% , P=0.014) and was associated with a lower 5-year PFS rate in patients with testicular DLBCL (P=0.019) . Conclusion: Patients with secondary testicular DLBCL had worse PFS and OS than those with primary testicular DLBCL. The ECOG scores of ≥2, Ann Arbor stages Ⅲ-Ⅳ, increased LDH levels, and multiple extra-nodal involvements were poor prognostic factors in testicular DLBCL. PIM1, MYD88, CD79B, CREBBP, KMT2D, ATM, and BTG2 were commonly mutated genes in testicular DLBCL, and the prognosis of patients with KMT2D mutations was poor.

Morphological and Physiological Indicators and Transcriptome Analyses Reveal the Mechanism of Selenium Multilevel Mitigation of Cadmium Damage in Brassica juncea

Cadmium (Cd) is a common agricultural soil pollutant, which does serious harm to the environment and the human body. In this study, Brassica juncea was treated with different concentrations of CdCl₂ and Na₂SeO₃. Then, physiological indexes and transcriptome were measured to reveal the mechanisms by which Se reduces the inhibition and toxicity of Cd in B. juncea. The results showed that Se alleviated the inhibitive Cd effects on seedling biomass, root length, and chlorophyll, and promoted the adsorption of Cd by pectin and lignin in the root cell wall (CW). Se also alleviated the oxidative stress induced by Cd, and reduced the content of MDA in cells. As a result, SeCys and SeMet alleviated the transport of Cd to the shoots. Transcriptome data showed that the bivalent cation transporter MPP and ABCC subfamily participated in the separation of Cd in vacuoles, CAL1 was related to the chelation of Cd in the cytoplasm of cells, and ZIP transporter 4 reduced the transport of Cd to the shoots. These results indicated that Se alleviated the damage of Cd in plants and decreased its transport to the shoots by improving the antioxidant system, enhancing the ability of the CW to adsorb Cd, reducing the activity of Cd transporters, and chelating Cd.

Evidence of Antineutrinos from Distant Reactors Using Pure Water at SNO

The SNO+ Collaboration reports the first evidence of reactor antineutrinos in a Cherenkov detector. The nearest nuclear reactors are located 240 km away in Ontario, Canada. This analysis uses events with energies lower than in any previous analysis with a large water Cherenkov detector. Two analytical methods are used to distinguish reactor antineutrinos from background events in 190 days of data and yield consistent evidence for antineutrinos with a combined significance of 3.5σ.

Insights into multidimensional transport flux from vertical observation and numerical simulation in two cities in North China

This study represents the first quantitative evaluation of pollution transport budget within the boundary layer of typical cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region from the perspective of horizontal and vertical exchanges and further discusses the impact of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL)-free troposphere (FT) exchange on concentration of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) within the ABL during heavy pollution. From the perspective of the transport flux balance relationship, differences in pollution transport characteristics between the two cities is mainly reflected in the ABL-FT exchange effect. The FT mainly flowed into the ABL in BJ, while in SJZ, the outflow from the ABL to the FT was more intense. Combined with an analysis of vertical wind profile distribution, BJ was found to be more susceptible to the influence of northwest cold high prevailing in winter, while sinking of strong cold air allowed the FT flowing into the ABL influence the vertical exchange over BJ. In addition, we selected a typical pollution event for targeted analysis to understand mechanistic details of the influence of ABL-FT exchange on the pollution event. These results showed that ABL-FT interaction played an important role in PM_2.5 concentration within the ABL during heavy pollution. Especially in the early stage of heavy pollution, FT transport contributed as much as 82.74% of PM_2.5 within the ABL. These findings are significant for improving our understanding of pollution transport characteristics within the boundary layer and the effect of ABL-FT exchange on air quality.

Combination with litchi procyanidins under PEF treatment alters the physicochemical and processing properties of inulin

A novel alternative to prepare the inulin-procyanidin complex assisted by pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment was explored in this study. Results showed that the optimal condition of PEF treatment enhanced the adsorption rate of procyanidins to inulin from 78.56 to 103.46 μg/mg. Based on well fitted by Redlich-Peterson model and spectral analysis including UV and FT-IR, the interaction between inulin and procyanidin was evidenced to be dominated by hydrogen bonds. The DSC curve and the SEM spectrum displayed better stability of the PEF-treated inulin-procyanidin complex than the untreated complex. The PEF-treated complex had lower solubility but higher water-holding capacity than inulin, which exhibited stronger shear-thinning property and more stable flow behavior referring to rheological analysis. Furthermore, the gel formed from the PEF-treated complex possessed greater hardness, chewiness and viscosity, with no significant effects noted in terms of springiness, cohesiveness and resilience.

Insights into the key quality components in Se-Enriched green tea and their relationship with Selenium

Selenium-enriched green tea (Se-GT) is of increasing interest because of its health benefits, but its quality components obtained limited research. In this study, Enshi Se-enriched green tea (ESST, high-Se green tea), Pingli Se-enriched green tea (PLST, low-Se green tea), and Ziyang green tea (ZYGT, common green tea) were subjected to sensory evaluation, chemical analysis, and aroma profiling. Chemical profiles in Se-GT were consistent with the taste attributes of the sensory analysis. 9 volatiles were identified as key odorants of Se-GT based on multivariate analysis. Correlations between Se and quality components were further assessed and highly Se-related compounds contents in these three tea samples were compared. The results showed that most amino acids and non-gallated catechins were highly negatively correlated with Se, while gallated catechins exhibited strong positive correlation with Se. And there were strong and significant associations between the key aroma compounds and Se. Moreover, 11 differential markers were found between Se-GTs and common green tea, including catechin, serine, glycine, threonine, l-theanine, alanine, valine, isoleucine, leucine, histidine, and lysine. These findings provide great potential for quality evaluation of Se-GT.

Electrospray-Assisted Fabrication of Dextran-Whey Protein Isolation Microcapsules for the Encapsulation of Selenium-Enriched Peptide

Selenium-enriched peptide (SP, selenopeptide) is an excellent organic selenium supplement that has attracted increasing attention due to its superior physiological effects. In this study, dextran-whey protein isolation-SP (DX-WPI-SP) microcapsules were fabricated via high-voltage electrospraying technology. The results of preparation process optimization showed that the optimized preparation process parameters were 6% DX (w/v), feeding rate Q = 1 mL/h, voltage U = 15 kV, and receiving distance H = 15 cm. When the content of WPI (w/v) was 4-8%, the average diameter of the as-prepared microcapsules was no more than 45 μm, and the loading rate for SP ranged from ~46% to ~37%. The DX-WPI-SP microcapsules displayed excellent antioxidant capacity. The thermal stability of the microencapsulated SP was improved, which was attributed to the protective effects of the wall materials for SP. The release performance was investigated to disclose the sustained-release capacity of the carrier under different pH values and an in-vitro-simulated digestion environment. The digested microcapsule solution showed negligible influence on the cellular cytotoxicity of Caco-2 cells. Overall, our work provides a facile strategy of electrospraying microcapsules for the functional encapsulation of SP and witnesses a broad prospect that the DX-WPI-SP microcapsules can exhibit great potential in the food processing field.

[Effect of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy on prognosis of patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma:a multicenter retrospective study]

Objectives: To examine the influence of adjuvant chemotherapy after radical resection on the survival of patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(ICC) and to identify patients who may benefit from it. Methods: The clinical and pathological data of 654 patients with ICC diagnosed by postoperative pathology from December 2011 to December 2017 at 13 hospitals in China were collected retrospectively. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria,455 patients were included in this study,including 69 patients (15.2%) who received adjuvant chemotherapy and 386 patients (84.8%) who did not receive adjuvant chemotherapy. There were 278 males and 177 females,with age of 59 (16) years (M(IQR))(range:23 to 88 years). Propensity score matching (PSM) method was used to balance the difference between adjuvant chemotherapy group and non-adjuvant chemotherapy group. Kaplan-Meier method was used to plot the survival curve,the Log-rank test was used to compare the difference of overall survival(OS) and recurrence free survival(RFS)between the two groups. Univariate analysis was used to determine prognostic factors for OS. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were then performed for prognostic factors with P<0.10 to identify potential independent risk factors. The study population were stratified by included study variables and the AJCC staging system,and a subgroup analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method to explore the potential benefit subgroup population of adjuvant chemotherapy. Results: After 1∶1 PSM matching,69 patients were obtained in each group. There was no significant difference in baseline data between the two groups (all P>0.05). After PSM,Cox multivariate analysis showed that lymph node metastasis (HR=3.06,95%CI:1.52 to 6.16,P=0.039),width of resection margin (HR=0.56,95%CI:0.32 to 0.99,P=0.044) and adjuvant chemotherapy (HR=0.51,95%CI:0.29 to 0.91,P=0.022) were independent prognostic factors for OS. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the median OS time of adjuvant chemotherapy group was significantly longer than that of non-adjuvant chemotherapy group (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in RFS time between the adjuvant chemotherapy group and the non-adjuvant chemotherapy group (P>0.05). Subgroup analysis showed that,the OS of female patients,without HBV infection,carcinoembryonic antigen<9.6 μg/L,CA19-9≥200 U/ml,intraoperative bleeding<400 ml,tumor diameter>5 cm,microvascular invasion negative,without lymph node metastasis,and AJCC stage Ⅲ patients could benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy (all P<0.05). Conclusion: Adjuvant chemotherapy can prolong the OS of patients with ICC after radical resection,and patients with tumor diameter>5 cm,without lymph node metastasis,AJCC stage Ⅲ,and microvascular invasion negative are more likely to benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy.

Se-Enriched Cardamine violifolia Improves Laying Performance and Regulates Ovarian Antioxidative Function in Aging Laying Hens

As a selenium-enriched plant, Cardamine violifolia (SEC) has an excellent antioxidant function. The edibility of SEC is expected to develop new sources of organic Se supplementation for human and animal nutrition. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of SEC on laying performance and ovarian antioxidant capacity in aging laying hens. A total of 450 laying hens were assigned to five treatments. Dietary treatments included the following: a basal diet (diet without Se supplementation, CON) and basal diets supplemented with 0.3 mg/kg Se from sodium selenite (SS), 0.3 mg/kg Se from Se-enriched yeast (SEY), 0.3 mg/kg Se from SEC, or 0.3 mg/kg Se from SEC and 0.3 mg/kg Se from SEY (SEC + SEY). Results showed that supplementation with SEC tended to increase the laying rate, increased the Haugh unit of eggs, and reduced the FCR. SEC promoted ovarian cell proliferation, inhibited apoptosis, and ameliorated the maintenance of follicles. SEC, SEY, or SEC + SEY increased ovarian T-AOC and decreased MDA levels. SEC increased the mRNA abundance of ovarian selenoproteins. SEC and SEC + SEY increased the mRNA abundance of Nrf2, HO-1, and NQO1, and decreased the mRNA abundance of Keap1. These results indicate that SEC could potentially to improve laying performance and egg quality via the enhancement of ovarian antioxidant capacity. SEC exerts an antioxidant function through the modulation of the Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway.

Illumina RNA and SMRT Sequencing Reveals the Mechanism of Uptake and Transformation of Selenium Nanoparticles in Soybean Seedlings

Selenium (Se) is an essential element for mammals, and its deficiency in the diet is a global problem. Agronomic biofortification through exogenous Se provides a valuable strategy to enhance human Se intake. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have been regarded to be higher bioavailability and less toxicity in comparison with selenite and selenate. Still, little has been known about the mechanism of their metabolism in plants. Soybean (Glycine max L.) can enrich Se, providing an ideal carrier for Se biofortification. In this study, soybean sprouts were treated with SeNPs, and a combination of next-generation sequencing (NGS) and single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing was applied to clarify the underlying molecular mechanism of SeNPs metabolism. A total of 74,662 nonredundant transcripts were obtained, and 2109 transcription factors, 9687 alternative splice events, and 3309 long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) were predicted, respectively. KEGG enrichment analysis of the DEGs revealed that metabolic pathways, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, and peroxisome were most enriched both in roots and leaves after exposure to SeNPs. A total of 117 transcripts were identified to be putatively involved in SeNPs transport and biotransformation in soybean. The top six hub genes and their closely coexpressed Se metabolism-related genes, such as adenylylsulfate reductase (APR3), methionine-tRNA ligase (SYM), and chloroplastic Nifs-like cysteine desulfurases (CNIF1), were screened by WGCNA and identified to play crucial roles in SeNPs accumulation and tolerance in soybean. Finally, a putative metabolism pathway of SeNPs in soybean was proposed. These findings have provided a theoretical foundation for future elucidation of the mechanism of SeNPs metabolism in plants.

Diagnosis of photochemical O3 production of urban plumes in summer via developing the real-field IRs of VOCs: A case study in Beijing of China

This study mainly developed an estimate method for photochemical ozone (O₃) production from urban plumes in hot season, through simulating O₃ evolution from precursors locally emitted and determining the real-field O₃ increment reactivity (IR) of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) based on the box chemical model. Our simulation on June-2019 indicated that Beijing local emissions produced O₃ at the rate of 0.7-9.2 ppb/h and led to an O₃ increase of 48.9 ppb during 05:00-18:00, accounting for 68.3% of the observed O₃ increase. The maximum level and production rate of simulated O₃ showed a linear response to VOCs, therefore we can use VOCs levels in urban plumes to quantify O₃ formation in summer. The IR (g O₃ formed per g VOCs) was calculated on the actual precursor and meteorology condition of this megacity, 0.12-4.90 g/g for individual VOCs and 1.49 g/g for comprehensive TVOCs. The weighted average of individual IRs agreed well with that of TVOCs, but these IRs were 34.5% of MIR values that were widely used in references. It's noteworthy that these IRs had greater sensitivity to precursor levels, and broadly remained stable under the fixed VOCs:NOx. Considering the synchronous reductions of precursors in Beijing, we applied these IRs to quantify chemical O₃ evolution from Beijing local emissions in summer of recent years, declining from 63.5 ppb in 2016 to 44.0 ppb in 2020 for June. The contributions of the diagnosed chemical O₃ to Beijing O₃ better matched with the atmospheric transport paths on daily basis, higher than 100% when the transport paths starting from the clean neighbor cities, but lower to 45%-66% when the transport paths originating from the highly-polluted neighbor cities. This consistence indicated the reliability of our IR calculation method for quickly estimating chemical O₃ production of urban plumes in summer.

Effect of Nano-Selenium on Nutritional Quality of Cowpea and Response of ABCC Transporter Family

It is an important way for healthy Selenium (Se) supplement to transform exogenous Se into organic Se through crops. In the present study, Vigna unguiculata was selected as a test material and sprayed with biological nano selenium (SeNPs) and Na₂SeO₃, and its nutrient composition, antioxidant capacity, total Se and organic Se content were determined, respectively. Further, the response of ABC transporter family members in cowpea to different exogenous Se treatments was analyzed by transcriptome sequencing combined with different Se forms. The results show that the soluble protein content of cowpea increased after twice Se treatment. SeNPs treatment increased the content of cellulose in cowpea pods. Na₂SeO₃ treatment increased the content of vitamin C (Vc) in cowpea pods. Se treatments could significantly increase the activities of Peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and catalase (CAT) in cowpea pods and effectively maintain the activity of Superoxide dismutase (SOD). SeNPs can reduce the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in pods. After Se treatment, cowpea pods showed a dose-effect relationship on the absorption and accumulation of total Se, and Na₂SeO₃ treatment had a better effect on the increase of total Se content in cowpea pods. After treatment with SeNPs and Na₂SeO₃, the Se species detected in cowpea pods was mainly SeMet, followed by MeSeCys. Inorganic Se can only be detected in the high concentration treatment group. Analysis of transcriptome data of cowpea treated with Se showed that ABC transporters could play an active role in response to Se stress and Se absorption, among which ABCB, ABCC and ABCG subfamilies played a major role in Se absorption and transportation in cowpea. Further analysis by weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) showed that the content of organic Se in cowpea treated with high concentration of SeNPs was significantly and positively correlated with the expression level of three transporters ABCC11, ABCC13 and ABCC10, which means that the ABCC subfamily may be more involved in the transmembrane transport of organic Se in cells.

[Clinical characteristics and prognosis of primary and secondary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the pancreas]

Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics and prognosis of primary and secondary pancreatic diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) . Methods: Clinical data of patients with pancreatic DLBCL admitted at Shanghai Rui Jin Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine from April 2003 to June 2020 were analyzed. Gene mutation profiles were evaluated by targeted sequencing (55 lymphoma-related genes). Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were used to evaluate the prognostic factors of overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) . Results: Overall, 80 patients were included; 12 patients had primary pancreatic DLBCL (PPDLBCL), and 68 patients had secondary pancreatic DLBCL (SPDLBCL). Compared with those with PPDLBCL, patients with SPDLBCL had a higher number of affected extranodal sites (P<0.001) and had higher IPI scores (P=0.013). There was no significant difference in the OS (P=0.120) and PFS (P=0.067) between the two groups. Multivariate analysis indicated that IPI intermediate-high/high risk (P=0.025) and double expressor (DE) (P=0.017) were independent adverse prognostic factors of OS in patients with pancreatic DLBCL. IPI intermediate-high/high risk (P=0.021) was an independent adverse prognostic factor of PFS in patients with pancreatic DLBCL. Targeted sequencing of 29 patients showed that the mutation frequency of PIM1, SGK1, BTG2, FAS, MYC, and MYD88 in patients with pancreatic DLBCL were all >20%. PIM1 (P=0.006 for OS, P=0.032 for PFS) and MYD88 (P=0.001 for OS, P=0.017 for PFS) mutations were associated with poor OS and PFS in patients with SPDLBCL. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in the OS and PFS between patients with PPDLBCL and those with SPDLBCL. IPI intermediate-high/high risk and DE were adverse prognostic factors of pancreatic DLBCL. PIM1, SGK1, BTG2, FAS, MYC, and MYD88 were common mutations in pancreatic DLBCL. PIM1 and MYD88 mutations indicated worse prognosis.

Prognostic Value of Four Preimplantation Malnutrition Estimation Tools in Predicting Heart Failure Hospitalization of the Older Diabetic Patients with Right Ventricular Pacing

OBJECTIVES

The prognostic value of preimplantation nutritional status is not yet known for older diabetic patients that received right ventricular pacing (RVP). The study aimed to investigate the clinical value of the four malnutrition screening tools for the prediction of heart failure hospitalization (HFH) in older diabetic patients that received RVP.

DESIGN

Retrospective observational cohort study.

SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS

This study was conducted between January 2017 and January 2018 at the Fuwai Hospital, Beijing, China, and included older (age ≥ 65 years) diabetic patients that received RVP for the first time Measurements: The Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), Naples Prognostic Score (NPS), and the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score were used to estimate the preimplantation nutritional status of the patients. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were performed to investigate the association between preimplantation malnutrition and HFH.

RESULTS

Overall, 231 older diabetic patients receiving RVP were included. The median follow-up period after RVP was 53 months. HFH was reported for 19.9% of the included patients. Our results showed preimplantation malnutrition for 18.2%, 15.2%, 86.6% and 66.2% of the included patients based on the PNI, GNRI, NPS, and CONUT score, respectively. The cumulative rate of HFH during follow-up period was significantly higher for patients in the preimplantation malnutrition group based on the PNI (log-rank = 13.0, P = 0.001), GNRI (log-rank = 8.5, P = 0.01), and NPS (log-rank = 15.7, P < 0.001) compared to the normal nutrition group, but was not statistically significant for those in the preimplantation malnutrition group based on the CONUT score (log-rank = 2.7, P = 0.3). As continuous variables, all the nutritional indices showed significant correlation with HFH (all P < 0.05). However, multivariate analysis showed that only GNRI was independently associated with HFH (HR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.937-0.997, P = 0.032). As categorical variables, PNI, GNRI, and NPS showed significant correlation with HFH. After adjustment of confounding factors, moderate-to-severe degree of malnutrition was an independent predictor of HFH based on the PNI (HR = 4.66, 95% CI: 1.03-21.00, P = 0.045) and GNRI (HR = 3.02, 95% CI: 1.02-9.00, P = 0.047).

CONCLUSION

Preimplantation malnutrition was highly prevalent in older diabetic patients that received RVP. The malnutrition prediction tools, PNI and GNRI, showed significant prognostic value in accurately predicting HFH in older diabetic patients with RVP.

A review of the technology and applications of methods for evaluating the transport of air pollutants

A variety of methods based on air quality models, including tracer methods, the brute-force method (BFM), decoupled direct method (DDM), high-order decoupled direct method (HDDM), response surface models (RSMs) and so on forth, have been widely used to study the transport of air pollutants. These methods have good applicability for the transport of air pollutants with simple formation mechanisms. However, differences in research conclusions on secondary pollutants with obvious nonlinear characteristics have been reported. For example, the tracer method is suitable for the study of simplified scenarios, while HDDM and RSMs are more suitable for the study for nonlinear pollutants. Multiple observation techniques, including conventional air pollutant observation, lidar observation, air sounding balloons, vehicle-mounted and ship-borne technology, aerial surveys, and remote sensing observations, have been utilized to investigate air pollutant transport characteristics with time resolution as high as 1 sec. In addition, based on a multi-regional input-output model combined with emission inventories, the transfer of air pollutant emissions can be evaluated and applied to study the air pollutant transport characteristics. Observational technologies have advantages in temporal resolution and accuracy, while modeling technologies are more flexible in spatial resolution and research plan setting. In order to accurately quantify the transport characteristics of pollutants, it is necessary to develop a research method for interactive verification of observation and simulation. Quantitative evaluation of the transport of air pollutants from different angles can provide a scientific basis for regional joint prevention and control.

Selenium Regulates Antioxidant, Photosynthesis, and Cell Permeability in Plants under Various Abiotic Stresses: A Review

Plant growth is affected by various abiotic stresses, including water, temperature, light, salt, and heavy metals. Selenium (Se) is not an essential nutrient for plants but plays important roles in alleviating the abiotic stresses suffered by plants. This article summarizes the Se uptake and metabolic processes in plants and the functions of Se in response to water, temperature, light, salt, and heavy metal stresses in plants. Se promotes the uptake of beneficial substances, maintains the stability of plasma membranes, and enhances the activity of various antioxidant enzymes, thus alleviating adverse effects in plants under abiotic stresses. Future research directions on the relationship between Se and abiotic stresses in plants are proposed. This article will further deepen our understanding of the relationship between Se and plants.

Interaction between selenium and essential micronutrient elements in plants: A systematic review

Nutrient imbalance (i.e., deficiency and toxicity) of microelements is an outstanding environmental issue that influences each aspect of ecosystems. Although the crucial roles of microelements in entire lifecycle of plants have been widely acknowledged, the effective control of microelements is still neglected due to the narrow safe margins. Selenium (Se) is an essential element for humans and animals. Although it is not believed to be indispensable for plants, many literatures have reported the significance of Se in terms of the uptake, accumulation, and detoxification of essential microelements in plants. However, most papers only concerned on the antagonistic effect of Se on metal elements in plants and ignored the underlying mechanisms. There is still a lack of systematic review articles to summarize the comprehensive knowledge on the connections between Se and microelements in plants. In this review, we conclude the bidirectional effects of Se on micronutrients in plants, including iron, zinc, copper, manganese, nickel, molybdenum, sodium, chlorine, and boron. The regulatory mechanisms of Se on these micronutrients are also analyzed. Moreover, we further emphasize the role of Se in alleviating element toxicity and adjusting the concentration of micronutrients in plants by altering the soil conditions (e.g., adsorption, pH, and organic matter), promoting microbial activity, participating in vital physiological and metabolic processes, generating element competition, stimulating metal chelation, organelle compartmentalization, and sequestration, improving the antioxidant defense system, and controlling related genes involved in transportation and tolerance. Based on the current understanding of the interaction between Se and these essential elements, future directions for research are suggested.
