A new synthesis, characterization and application chelating resin for determination of some trace metals in honey samples by FAAS

Bismuth Film along with dsDNA-Modified Electrode Surfaces as Promising (bio)Sensors in the Analysis of Heavy Metals in Soils

Heavy metals constitute pollutants that are particularly common in air, water, and soil. They are present in both urban and rural environments, on land, and in marine ecosystems, where they cause serious environmental problems since they do not degrade easily, remain almost unchanged for long periods, and bioaccumulate. The detection and especially the quantification of metals require a systematic process. Regular monitoring is necessary because of seasonal variations in metal levels. Consequently, there is a significant need for rapid and low-cost metal determination methods. In this study, we compare and analytically validate absorption spectrometry with a sensitive voltammetric method, which uses a bismuth film-plated electrode surface and applies stripping voltammetry. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) represents a well-established analytical technique, while the applicability of anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) in complicated sample matrices such as soil samples is currently unknown. This sample-handling challenge is investigated in the present study. The results show that the AAS and ASV methods were satisfactorily correlated and showed that the metal concentration in soils was lower than the limit values but with an increasing trend. Therefore, continuous monitoring of metal levels in the urban complex of a city is necessary and a matter of great importance. The limits of detection of cadmium (Cd) were lower when using the stripping voltammetry (SWASV) graphite furnace technique compared with those obtained with AAS when using the graphite furnace. However, when using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (flame-AAS), the measurements tended to overestimate the concentration of Cd compared with the values found using SWASV. This highlights the differences in sensitivity and accuracy between these analytical methods for detecting Cd. The SWASV method has the advantage of being cheaper and faster, enabling the simultaneous determination of heavy elements across the range of concentrations that these elements can occur in Mediterranean soils. Additionally, a dsDNA biosensor is suggested for the discrimination of Cu(I) along with Cu(II) based on the oxidation peak of guanine, and adenine residues can be applied in the redox speciation analysis of copper in soil, which represents an issue of great importance.

A green and simplified approach for the quantitative and sensitive analysis of heavy metal ions in sea and stream waters

Elimination of the matrix effect is a major challenge in developing a method for the quantification of heavy metals (HMs) in water samples. In this regard, the current research describes the simultaneous analyses of Cu(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II) ions in water matrices through flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS) after preconcentration with carrier element-free co-precipitation (CEFC) technique by the help of an organic co-precipitant, 3-{[5-(4-Chlorobenzyl)-3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl]-methyl}-4-[2,4-(dichlorobenzylidene)amino]-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5(4H)-thione (CCMBATT). Based on our literature research, CCMBATT was employed for the first time in this study as an organic co-precipitant for the preconcentration of HMs. Factors such as solution pH, concentration of co-precipitant, sample volume, standing time, centrifugation rate, and time were thoroughly examined and optimized to achieve the highest efficiency in terms of HM recovery. The limits of detection (LODs) (with 10 number of tests) of 0.54, 0.34, and 1.95 μg L-1 and the relative standard deviations (RSD %) of 2.1, 3.3, and 3.0 were determined for Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions, respectively. Recovery results of HMs for the spiked samples were in the range of 92.8-101.0%, demonstrating the trueness of the method and its applicability to the water samples matrix.

New Prospects in the Electroanalysis of Heavy Metal Ions (Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu): Development and Application of Novel Electrode Surfaces

The detection of toxic heavy metal ions, especially cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu), is a global problem due to ongoing pollution incidents and continuous anthropogenic and industrial activities. Therefore, it is important to develop effective detection techniques to determine the levels of pollution from heavy metal ions in various media. Electrochemical techniques, more specifically voltammetry, due to its properties, is a promising method for the simultaneous detection of heavy metal ions. This review examines the current trends related to electrode formation and analysis techniques used. In addition, there is a reference to advanced detection methods based on the nanoparticles that have been developed so far, as well as formation with bismuth and the emerging technique of screen-printed electrodes. Finally, the advantages of using these methods are highlighted, while a discussion is presented on the benefits arising from nanotechnology, as it gives researchers new ideas for integrating these technologies into devices that can be used anywhere at any time. Reference is also made to the speciation of metals and how it affects their toxicity, as it is an important subject of research.

Fluorescence turn off-on detection of Co2+ and enrofloxacin by N, Cl-carbon dots prepared in deep eutectic solvent and study of their photocatalytic antibacterial activity

Nitrogen, chloride doped carbon dots (N, Cl-CDs) were synthesized in deep eutectic solvent. TEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, EDAX, UV-Vis and fluorescence were used for characterization. Quantum yield and average size of N, Cl-CDs were 38.75 % and 2-3 nm, respectively. N, Cl-CDs fluorescence was turn off by cobalt ion and then turn on gradually after addition of enrofloxacin. Linear dynamic range and detection limit (DL) for Co²⁺ and enrofloxacin were (0.1-70 µM and 30 nM) and (0.05-50 µM and 25 nM), respectively. Enrofloxacin was detected in blood serum and water samples with the recovery of 96-103 %. Finally, Antibacterial activity of the carbon dots was also investigated.

Tree-based machine learning models assisted fluorescent sensor array for detection of metal ions based on silver nanocluster probe

The growing concern over heavy metal pollution and its impact on the environment and human health has led to a proliferation of research on the detection and differentiation of heavy metal ions. A novel fluorescent sensor array utilizing only one single Ag-nanoclusters (Ag NCs) was developed for the efficient detection of six metal ions. The Ag NCs probe was prepared by using poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid) (PMVEM) as the ligand and has different fluorescence properties in water and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The interaction between metal ions and Ag NCs resulted in a characteristic fluorescence variation pattern which was subsequently analyzed using various tree-based machine learning models. We have compared different combinations of classification models and pre-processing methods of which the K-Nearest Neighbors Classifier with the first five linear discriminants has the highest accuracy. Through the integration of concentration models within a tree-based pipeline optimization framework, six unique concentration regression models were selected for each metal ion. In addition, the developed sensor array could identify metal ions in binary mixtures. And it still kept high accuracy for the classification of six target metal ions in river water. In conclusion, the proposed framework was found to be effective in the detection of heavy metal ions in environmental samples, thus providing a promising approach for addressing heavy metal pollution.

A Chelating Resin of EDTA-Type Modified Cross-Linking Polystyrene to Preconcentrate Trace Metals for Seawater Detection

The determination of trace metals in seawater is an important project of marine environmental monitoring. However, the presence of many alkali metal ions with high concentration, such as sodium ion, seriously interferes with the detection limit and accuracy of atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS, flame/graphite furnace integrated). The conventional chemical methods for the enrichment of trace metals are complex, and low boiling point organic solvents are used. In this paper, a kind of commercial cross-linked polystyrene resin microspheres was chloromethylated and aminated to introduce EDTA-type amino polycarboxylic groups and then loaded in a column as the absorption filler. A set of seawater pretreatment and enrichment devices was designed and assembled. The enriching process and conditions of trace Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd in standard seawater were studied. 10 g of the modified resin could enrich the equivalent seawater and remove successfully the light metal ions. pH = 5∼9 and 0.2 mL/min of the flow rate were the suitable conditions for preconcentration. The enriched metal ions in the eluent were analyzed on the AAS. Compared with the conventional solvent method, the novel material and enrichment device have high preconcentration efficiency, strong anti-interference ability, and low cost and could be directly applied for routine seawater detection.

Surfactant-Modulated a Highly Sensitive Fluorescent Probe of Fully Conjugated Covalent Organic Nanosheets for Detecting Copper Ions in Aqueous Solution

Efficient detection of aqueous copper ions is of high significance for environmental and human health, since copper is involved in potent redox activity in physiological and pathological processes. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have shown advantages in efficient capturing and detecting of copper ions due to their large surface area, robust chemical stability, and high sensitivity, but most of them are hydrophobic, leading to the limitation in sensing copper ions in aqueous media. Herein, the design and synthesis of an sp² -carbon conjugated COF (sp² -TPE-COF) are reported with surfactant-assisted water dispersion for detecting traces of copper ions based on the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. Importantly, the olefin-linked conjugated backbone of sp² -TPE-COF works as a signal amplified transducer for metal ion sensing. Notably, it is found that a surfactant-assisted strategy can greatly enhance COF's dispersion in aqueous solution and finely modulate their sensitivity with a significantly improved K_SV to 15.15 × 10⁴ m^-1 in SDBS (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate) solution, the value of which is larger than that of a majority of COF/MOF based sensors for copper ions. This research demonstrates the promise of surfactant modulated fully π-conjugated COFs for sensing applications.

Ultrasensitive Detection of Fe3+ Ions Using Functionalized Graphene Quantum Dots Fabricated by a One-Step Pulsed Laser Ablation Process

With respect to the detection of Fe3+ ions, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have limitations for commercialization owing to their high limit of detection (LOD). Here, we report a one-step pulsed laser ablation (PLA) process to fabricate amino-functionalized GQDs (FGQDs) for the efficient detection of Fe3+ using polypyrrole (PPy) both as a precursor (amine N) and as a surfactant and also using graphite as a carbon precursor. Using this method, the amine N groups were easily incorporated into the carbon network of the GQDs. Additionally, compared to pristine GQDs, FGQDs showed smaller particle sizes and narrower size distributions owing to the surface passivation effects of the PPy surfactant. Due to the synergistic effect of surface passivation and incorporation of amine N groups, FGQDs exhibited a sensitive response to Fe3+ ions in the concentration range of 500 nM to 50 μM, which is lower than the quality standards for Fe3+ ions (∼5.36 μM) as suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, the processing time for synthesizing FGQDs by the PLA process was less than 30 min, thus allowing successful practical applications of GQDs in the sensing field.

Fabrication of two-phase Ca2+-doped LaVO4:Eu3+ structures: morphology modification, tunable optical performance and detection of Fe3+ ions with high sensitivity

Two-phase Ca²⁺-doped LaVO₄:Eu³⁺ nanocrystals were prepared through a hydrothermal method with the help of SOD CITR and EDTA surfactants. The phase and morphology of the products were characterized by XRD and TEM, and the fluorescence performances were also recorded. The results indicated that Ca²⁺ ions were doped into the LaVO₄:Eu³⁺ host lattice, impeding the aggregation of the nanocrystals and enhancing the luminescence intensity. The morphology transformation process and luminescence enhancement were systematacially investigated. The fluorescence intensity of the two selected samples could be completely quenched by Fe³⁺ ions without the disturbance of other ions, with the mechanism being due to the adsorption of Fe³⁺ ions onto the grains and a subsequent energy transfer from Eu³⁺ to Fe³⁺. Therefore, the present two Ca²⁺-doped LaVO₄:Eu³⁺ samples can be applied as appropriate candidates for detecting Fe³⁺ ions with agility and sensitivity in aqueous solution.

Novel Aminosilane (APTES)-Grafted Polyaniline@Graphene Oxide (PANI-GO) Nanocomposite for Electrochemical Sensor

Lead is a potentially toxic element (PTE) that has several adverse medical effects in humans. Its presence in the environment became prominent due to anthropogenic activities. The current study explores the use of newly developed composite materials (organic-inorganic hybrid) based on PANI-GO-APTES for electrochemical detection of Pb²⁺ in aqueous solution. The composite material (PANI-GO-APTES) was synthesized by chemical method and was characterized with SEM, XPS, XEDS, XRD, TGA, FTIR, EIS and CV. The result of characterization indicates the successful synthesis of the intended material. The PANI-GO-APTES was successfully applied for electrochemical detection of Pb²⁺ using cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry method. The limit of detection of Pb²⁺ was 0.0053 µM in the linear range of 0.01 µM to 0.4 µM. The current response produced during the electrochemical reduction of Pb²⁺ catalyzed by PANI-GO-APTES was also very repeatable, reproducible and rapid. The application of PANI-GO-APTES-modified GCE in real sample analysis was also established. Therefore, PANI-GO-APTES is presented as a potential Pb²⁺ sensor for environmental and human health safety.

A global systematic review, meta-analysis, and risk assessment of the concentration of vanadium in drinking water resources

The presence of toxic metals such as vanadium in water resources has attracted considerable attention as a new concern in international health. Systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to assess the concentration of vanadium in water resources along with the relevant ecological risk assessment. Databases of Scopus, PubMed, and Embase were investigated to retrieve the related articles from January 01, 1974 to December 25, 2019. Twenty-eight articles containing 152 samples from 24 countries were included. Furthermore, the meta-analysis was conducted by the approach of z-score to estimate differences in the effect size. In addition, the mean of concentrations of vanadium was applied to calculate the risk assessment only to the water surface and choose the maximum environmental concentration (MEC) for demonstrate a worst-case scenario. Here, the risk assessment approach was used to show that the MEC of vanadium confirm the risk it for aquatic ecosystems, being fish (e.g., Danio rerio) our model organism due to their sensibility. According to findings, the MEC of vanadium in surface water varied from 0.010 μg L^-1 (USA) and 68 μg L^-1 (China), with an overall mean of 6.21 ± 13.3 μg L^-1 (mean ± standard deviation). The ecological risk assessment demonstrated that people living in some countries such as China and Japan were at an adverse ecological risk of vanadium in the water resources. Hence, essential control plans besides adequate removal techniques must be implemented for significant deracination of heavy metals like vanadium.

A novel copper(i) metal–organic framework as a highly efficient and ultrasensitive electrochemical platform for detection of Hg(ii) ions in aqueous solution

Fabrication of the Ni-based composite wires for electrochemical detection of copper(Ⅱ) ions

Copper ions (Cu²⁺) pollution in the water environment poses a great threat to the health function of life-sustaining metabolic activities. However, the current detection methods need relatively expensive instruments, complex operation procedures and long time, so a facile and direct detection method is desired to be developed. In this work, the Ni-based composite wires with p-n junction (the Ni/NiO/ZnO/Chitosan wire) and Schottky junction (the Ni/NiO/Au/Chitosan wire) were fabricated, and the barrier driven electrochemical sensing mechanism was studied. The direct and facile detection of Cu²⁺ was achieved with a wide linear range (0-6000 nM) and a low LOD (0.81 nM). The excellent stability and recovery in real water samples made the Ni-based composite wires a promising candidate for the practical application. The interfacial barriers of semiconductor can be used as a special sensing factor to develop novel sensors.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized with bathocuproinedisulfonic acid: analytical applications for the quantification of Cu(II)

This work reports the successful non-covalent functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with bathocuproinedisulfonic acid (BCS) and the analytical application of the resulting dispersion (MWCNTs-BCS) to develop an electrochemical sensor for Cu(II) quantification. The sensor was obtained by casting glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) with MWCNTs-BCS. The sensing mechanism was based on the open circuit preconcentration of Cu(II) at the electrode surface by complexation of Cu(II) through the phenanthroline ring nitrogen of the BCS that supports the MWCNTs, the reduction of the preconcentrated Cu(II), and final differential pulse voltammetry-anodic stripping in 0.020 M acetate buffer, pH 5.00. The sensitivity of the sensor was (2.73 ± 0.08) μA μM^-1, with a linear range between 5.0 × 10^-7 M and 6.0 × 10^-6 M, a detection limit of 0.15 μM (9.5 μg L^-1), and reproducibility of 6.2% using the same dispersion and 7.1% using three different MWCNTs-BCS dispersions. The quantification of Cu(II) was highly selective even in the presence of As³⁺, Cr³⁺, Cd²⁺, Ni²⁺, Pb²⁺, Co²⁺, Zn²⁺, Fe²⁺, Hg²⁺, Rh, Ir, and Ru. The proposed sensor was successfully used for quantifying Cu(II) in tap water. Graphical abstract.

Electrochemiluminescence aptasensor for multiple determination of Hg2+ and Pb2+ ions by using the MIL-53(Al)@CdTe-PEI modified electrode

An aptasensor based on MIL-53(Al)@CdTe was designed for multiple determination of Hg²⁺ and Pb²⁺ by electrochemiluminescence (ECL). Upon the recognition of Hg²⁺, aptamer 2-AuNPs form hairpin structures and are removed from the electrode. While in the presence of Pb²⁺, aptamer 1-PtNPs capture the target ions and form G-quadruplexes, and then bring PtNPs close enough to CdTe QDs to produce ECL resonance energy transfer. Upon aptamer interaction with Hg²⁺ and Pb²⁺, decreased ECL intensity was observed due to enhanced resonance energy transfer (ERET) and attenuated surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The ECL intensity difference (ΔECL) could therefore be used to detect heavy-metal ions with detection limits of 4.1 × 10^-12 M (path 1, Hg²⁺), 3.7 × 10^-11 M (path 2, Pb²⁺), and 2.4 × 10^-11 M (path 3, Pb²⁺). The aptasensor could also be used for detecting Hg²⁺ and Pb²⁺ in fish and shrimp samples with good recoveries.

Strategies for Surface Modification with Ag-Shaped Nanoparticles: Electrocatalytic Enhancement of Screen-Printed Electrodes for the Detection of Heavy Metals

Screen-printed carbon nanofiber electrodes (SPCNFEs) represent an alternative with great acceptance due to their results, as well as their low impact on the environment. In order to improve their performance, in the present work they were modified with silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) and electrochemically characterized by using anodic stripping voltammetry. From the Ag-NP synthesis, silver seeds (Ag-NS) and silver nanoprisms (Ag-NPr) were obtained. The Ag-NP formation was confirmed by micrographs, where Ag-NPs with diameters of 12.20 ± 0.04 nm for Ag-NS and 20.40 ± 0.09 nm for Ag-NPr were observed. The electrodes were modified by using three different deposition methods—drop-casting, spin-coating, and in situ approaches—that offer different nanoparticle distribution and electrode modification times. It was observed that the last methodology showed a low amount of Ag-NS deposited on the electrode surface and deep alteration of this surface. Those facts suggest that the in situ synthesis methodology was not appropriate for the determination of heavy metals, and it was discarded. The incorporation of the nanoparticles by spin-coating and drop-casting strategies showed different spatial distribution on the electrode surface, as proved by scanning electron microscopy. The electrodes modified by these strategies were evaluated for the cadmium(II) and lead(II) detection using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, obtaining detection limit values of 2.1 and 2.8 µg·L⁻¹, respectively. The overall results showed that the incorporation route does not directly change the electrocatalytic effect of the nanoparticles, but the shape of these nanoparticles (spherical for seeds and triangular for prisms) has preferential electrocatalytic enhancement over Cd(II) or Pb(II).

Functionalized magnetic composites based on the aptamer serve as novel bio-adsorbent for the separation and preconcentration of trace lead

A magnetic functionalized bio-sorbent based on aptamer was designed for the selective separation of ultra-trace Pb²⁺, shortly termed as Fe₃O₄@Au@DNA. Pb(II) specific aptamer attached to the magnetic solid substrate served as affinity probe to capture and separate trace lead. Oligonucleotides with a polyA block were employed for the immobilization on the surface of AuNPs, with adenine sequences (polyA) as the part of effective anchoring block. The prepared Fe₃O₄@Au@DNA composites were characterized by FT-IR, SEM and XPS. The binding of lead on Fe₃O₄@Au@DNA composites surface was pH-dependent, the adsorption follows Langmuir model, and the adsorption dynamic fits the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. Procedure for lead separation and preconcentration was explored and combined with detection of graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). Under the optimum condition, an enrichment factor of 17.73 was obtained with a sample volume of 1.0 mL. The limit of detection (LOD) was 57 ng L^-1 along with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 2.06 (n = 9). The procedure was further validated by a certified reference material GBW08608 and several environmental and blood samples.

A rapid ultrasonic energy assisted preconcentration method for simultaneous extraction of lead and cadmium in various cosmetic brands using deep eutectic solvent: A multivariate study

An innovative ultrasonic assisted microextraction method using a deep eutectic solvent for entrapping the organ metallic complexes was developed to pre-concentrate the trace quantities of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in lipsticks and eye shadows of different brands prior to flame atomic absorption spectrometry analysis. A deep eutectic solvent (DES) was used in this study, prepared by mixing metal salt (ZnCl₂) and hydrogen bond donors such as (acetamide) in different ratio. The different branded cosmetic items, lipstick and eye shadows, obtained from local market and subjected to acid digestion prior to application of proposed ultrasonic assisted microextraction method based on deep eutectic solvent (UAµE-DES) with the aid of mechanical and ultrasound energies. Ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate was used as a ligand to made hydrophobic complexes of Cd and Pb, entrapped in DES in the presence of aprotic solvent. The seven variables, mixing ratio of ZnCl₂ and Acetamide, DES volume, Ultrasound and Conventional shaking time, pH, tetrahydrofuran and complexing reagent volume were optimized by multivariate approach for the optimum recovery of Cd and Pb from real cosmetic items. The resulted data indicates that ultrasound energy assisted extraction time, volume of DES and pH were most significant variables. The precision and validity of developed procedure were checked by the spiked known certified standards in real samples. The resulted data indicated that the lipsticks have different glittering colors contains high contents of Pb and Cd, whereas dark colors of eye shadows contain high level of both elements.

Estimation of the Fe and Cu Contents of the Surface Water in the Ebinur Lake Basin Based on LIBS and a Machine Learning Algorithm

Traditional technology for detecting heavy metals in water is time consuming and difficult and thus is not suitable for quantitative detection of large samples. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) can identify multi-state (such as solid, liquid, and gas) substances simultaneously, rapidly and remotely. In this study, water samples were collected from the Ebinur Lake Basin. The water samples were subjected to LIBS to extract the characteristic peaks of iron (Fe) and copper (Cu). Most of the quantitative analysis of LIBS rarely models and estimates the heavy metal contents in natural environments and cannot quickly determine the heavy metals in field water samples. This study creatively uses the Fe and Cu contents in water samples and the characteristics of their spectral curves in LIBS for regression modelling analysis and estimates their contents in an unknown water body by using LIBS technology and a machine learning algorithm, thus improving the detection rate. The results are as follows: (1) The Cu content of the Ebinur Lake Basin is generally higher than the Fe content, the highest Fe and Cu contents found within the basin are in the Ebinur Lake watershed, and the lowest are in the Jing River. (2) A number of peaks from each sample were found of the LIBS curve. The characteristic analysis lines of Fe and Cu were finally determined according to the intensities of the Fe and Cu characteristic lines, transition probabilities and high signal-to-background ratio (S/B). Their wavelengths were 396.3 and 324.7 nm, respectively. (3) The relative percent deviation (RPD) of the Fe content back-propagation (BP) network estimation model is 0.23, and the prediction ability is poor, so it is impossible to accurately predict the Fe content of samples. In the estimation model of BP network of Cu, the coefficient of determination (R²) is 0.8, the root mean squared error (RMSE) is 0.1, and the RPD is 1.79. This result indicates that the BP estimation model of Cu content has good accuracy and strong predictive ability and can accurately predict the Cu content in a sample. In summary, estimation based on LIBS improved the accuracy and efficiency of Fe and Cu content detection in water and provided new ideas and methods for the accurate estimation of Fe and Cu contents in water.

A Method to Determination of Lead Ions in Aqueous Samples: Ultrasound-Assisted Dispersive Liquid-Liquid Microextraction Method Based on Solidification of Floating Organic Drop and Back-Extraction Followed by FAAS

Ultrasound-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method based on solidification of floating organic drop and back-extraction (UA-DLLME-SFO-BE) technique was proposed for preconcentration of lead ions. In this technique, two SFODME steps are applied in sequence. The classical SFODME was applied as the first step and then the second (back-extraction) step was applied. For the classical SFODME, Pb ions were complexed with Congo red at pH 10.0 and then extracted into 1-dodecanol. After this stage, a second extraction step was performed instead of direct determination of the analyte ion in the classical method. For this purpose, the organic phase containing the extracted analyte ions is treated with 1.0 mol·L-1 HNO3 solution and then exposed to ultrasonication. So, the analyte ions were back-extracted into the aqueous phase. Finally, the analyte ions in the aqueous phase were determined by FAAS directly. Owing to the second extraction step, a clogging problem caused by 1-dodecanol during FAAS determination was avoided. Some parameters which affect the extraction efficiency such as pH, volume of extraction solvent, concentration of complexing agent, type, volume, and concentration of back-extraction solvent, effect of cationic surfactant addition, effect of temperature, and so on were examined. Performed experiments showed that optimum pH was 10.0, 1-dodecanol extraction solvent volume was 75 μL, back-extraction solvent was 500 μL, 1.0 mol·L-1 HNO3, extraction time was 4 min, and extraction temperature was 40°C. Under optimum conditions, the enhancement factor, limit of detection, limit of quantification, and relative standard deviation were calculated as 81, 1.9 μg·L-1, 6.4 μg·L-1, and 3.4% (for 25 μg·L-1 Pb2+), respectively.
