Abstract
In recent years, Flammulina velutipes (F. velutipes) has attracted consequential attention in various research fields due to its rich composition of proteins, vitamins, amino acids, polysaccharides, and polyphenols. F. velutipes polysaccharides (FVPs) are considered as key bioactive components of F. velutipes, demonstrating multiple physiological activities, including immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. Moreover, they offer health benefits such as antioxidant and anti-aging properties, which have exceptionally valuable clinical applications. Polysaccharides derived from different sources exhibit a wide range of biomedical functions and distinct biological activities. The varied biological functions of polysaccharides, coupled with their extensive application in functional foods and clinical applications, have prompted a heightened focus on polysaccharide research. Additionally, the extraction, deproteinization, and purification of FVPs are fundamental to investigate the structure and biological activities of polysaccharides. Therefore, this review provides a comprehensive and systematic overview of the extraction, deproteinization, purification, characterization, and structural elucidation of FVPs. Furthermore, the biological activities and mechanisms of FVPs have been further explored through in vivo and in vitro experiments. This review aims to provide a theoretical foundation and guide future research and development of FVPs.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) stands as a prevailing neurodegenerative condition (NDs), leading to the gradual deterioration of brain cells and subsequent declines in memory, thinking, behavior, and emotion. Despite the intensive research efforts and advances, an effective curative treatment for the disease has not yet been found. Mushrooms, esteemed globally for their exquisite flavors and abundant nutritional benefits, also hold a wealth of health-promoting compounds that contribute to improving AD health. These compounds encompass polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, terpenoids, phenols, and various other bioactive substances. Particularly noteworthy are the potent neuroprotective small molecules found in mushrooms, such as ergothioneine, erinacine, flavonoids, alkaloids, ergosterol, and melanin, which warrant dedicated scrutiny for their therapeutic potential in combating AD. This review summarizes such positive effects of mushroom bioactive compounds on AD, with a hope to contribute to the development of functional foods as an early dietary intervention for this neurodegenerative disease.

Abstract
One of the most popular edible mushrooms in the world, Flammulina velutipes, has been shown to possess pharmacological properties such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, the potential activity of the brown strain of F. velutipes, a hybrid between the white and yellow strains, has not been thoroughly investigated. Numerous studies have been conducted in recent years to determine whether natural products can aid in improving or treating kidney diseases. In this study, we focused on the renoprotective effects of the brown strain of F. velutipes on cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) in mice. Mice were pretreated with water extract from the brown strain of F. velutipes (WFV) from day 1 to day 10, with a single-dose intraperitoneal injection of cisplatin on day 7 to induce AKI. Our results demonstrated that WFV administration resulted in a reduction in weight loss and the amelioration of renal function and renal histological changes in mice with cisplatin-induced AKI. WFV improved antioxidative stress and anti-inflammatory capacity by increasing antioxidant enzymes and decreasing inflammatory factors. The expression of related proteins was determined via Western blot analysis, which showed that WFV could improve the expression of apoptosis and autophagy. We used the PI3K inhibitor Wortmannin and found that WFV achieved a protective effect by modulating the PI3K/AKT pathway and the expression of autophagy. Overall, WFV as a natural substance could be used as a new therapeutic agent for AKI.

Abstract
Macroscopic fungi, mainly higher basidiomycetes and some ascomycetes, are considered medicinal mushrooms and have long been used in different areas due to their pharmaceutically/nutritionally valuable bioactive compounds. However, the low production of these bioactive metabolites considerably limits the utilization of medicinal mushrooms both in commerce and clinical trials. As a result, many attempts, ranging from conventional methods to novel approaches, have been made to improve their production. The novel strategies include conducting omics investigations, constructing genome-scale metabolic models, and metabolic engineering. So far, genomics and the combined use of different omics studies are the most utilized omics analyses in medicinal mushroom research (both with 31% contribution), while metabolomics (with 4% contribution) is the least. This article is the first attempt for reviewing omics investigations in medicinal mushrooms with the ultimate aim of bioactive compound overproduction. In this regard, the role of these studies and systems biology in elucidating biosynthetic pathways of bioactive compounds and their contribution to metabolic engineering will be highlighted. Also, limitations of omics investigations and strategies for overcoming them will be provided in order to facilitate the overproduction of valuable bioactive metabolites in these valuable organisms.

Abstract
Egg production levels in late laying hens are negatively correlated with increasing age. Decreased liver and ovarian function in aging laying hens is accompanied by decreased antioxidant capacity, reproductive hormone levels, and follicular development, resulting in decreased synthesis of yolk precursors. The golden needle mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) has been reported to exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hypolipidemic properties. We aimed to reveal the therapeutic effects of F. velutipes stem (FVS) on liver-blood-ovary axis and investigate the underlying mechanisms. A total of 360 sixty-seven-wk-old laying hens were randomized into 4 treatment groups: 1) basal maize-soybean meal diet (CON); 2) basal maize + 20 g/kg FVS (2% FVS); 3) basal maize + 40 g/kg FVS (4% FVS); and 4) basal maize + 60 g/kg FVS (6% FVS). FVS groups demonstrated significantly increased egg production and ovarian development compared with the CON group. The addition of FVS increased the levels of antioxidant enzymes (GSH-Px, T-SOD, and T-AOC) in the liver, serum, and ovaries and decreased malondialdehyde levels by regulating the expression of proteins related to the Keap1-Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway. Additionally, FVS significantly decreased ovarian apoptosis by regulating Bax, Bcl-2, and caspase3 mRNA and protein expression levels. FVS significantly increased the expression levels of estradiol, progesterone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle stimulating hormone and their respective receptors. With increased levels of estradiol transported to the liver through the bloodstream, targeted binding to estrogen receptor (ER)-α and ER-β led to significant increases in ApoVLDL II, ApoB, and VTG II mRNA expression associated with yolk precursor synthesis. FVS decreased the levels of triglyceride and total cholesterol and significantly increased the expression of lipid metabolism, and transport-related mRNAs (FAS, PPAR-a/γ, and MTTP) in the liver. Therefore, the dietary supplementation of FVS can maintain the productive performance of aging laying hens by alleviating the degree of oxidative stress and regulating the transport of functional substances along the liver-blood-ovary axis, thereby improving the synthesis of yolk precursors.

Abstract
Chronic inflammation is associated with various chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease, and cancer, which severely affect the health and quality of life of people. Oxidative stress induced by unbalanced production and elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is one of the essential risk factors for chronic inflammation. Recent studies, including the studies of mushrooms, which have received considerable attention, report that the antioxidant effects of natural compounds have more advantages than synthetic antioxidants. Mushrooms have been consumed by humans as precious nourishment for 3,000 years, and so far, more than 350 types have been identified in China. Mushrooms are rich in polysaccharides, peptides, polyphenols, alkaloids, and terpenoids and are associated with several healthy biological functions, especially antioxidant properties. As such, the extracts purified from mushrooms could activate the expression of antioxidant enzymes through the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE pathway to neutralize excessive ROS and inhibit ROS-induced chronic inflammation through the NF-κB pathway. Recently, the antioxidant properties of mushrooms have been successfully applied to treating cardiovascular disease (CAD), neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes mellitus, and cancer. The present review summarizes the antioxidant properties and the mechanism of compounds purified from mushrooms, emphasizing the oxidative stress regulation of mushrooms to fight against chronic inflammation.

Abstract
Phillyrin is an effective lignan glycoside extracted from a traditional Chinese medicine Forsythia suspensa (Thunb.) Vahl (Oleaceae). It mainly exists in the roots, stems, leaves and fruits of the plant, with the highest content in the leaves. In terms of its medicinal application, there are a large number of experimental data proving its pharmacological effects in vitro and in animal models, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, anti-tumor, etc. Furthermore, pharmacokinetic experiments have also shown phillyrin's high effectiveness and low toxicity. Despite more than one thousand studies in the literature on phillyrin retrievable from Web of Science, PubMed, and CNKI, few reviews on its pharmacological activities have been presented conclusively. In this paper, we aimed to summarize the pharmacological and pharmacokinetic characteristics of phillyrin from the current literature, focusing on its anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, antiviral, antibacterial, hepatoprotective and anti-cancer effects, hoping to come up with new insights for its application as well as future studies.

Abstract
Flammulina velutipes is the fourth largest edible fungus in China with high nutritional value. In this paper, ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography tandem hybrid quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-Exactive-Orbitrap MS) was used to identify the secondary metabolites of F. velutipes. The metabolites were identified by comparing the retention time, accurate molecular weight, and MS2 data with standard databases of mzVault and mzCloud (compound: 17,000+) and BGI high-resolution accurate mass plant metabolome database (plant metabolite: 2500+). Finally, 26 secondary metabolites were preliminarily identified, including flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, organic acids, and steroids.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the remarkable advances made in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer during the past couple of decades, it remains the second largest cause of mortality in the world, killing approximately 9.6 million people annually. The major challenges in the treatment of the advanced stage of this disease are the development of chemoresistance, severe adverse effects of the drugs, and high treatment cost. Therefore, the development of drugs that are safe, efficacious, and cost-effective remains a 'Holy Grail' in cancer research. However, the research over the past four decades shed light on the cancer-preventive and therapeutic potential of natural products and their underlying mechanism of action. Apigenin is one such compound, which is known to be safe and has significant potential in the prevention and therapy of this disease. AIM To assess the literature available on the potential of apigenin and its analogs in modulating the key molecular targets leading to the prevention and treatment of different types of cancer. METHOD A comprehensive literature search has been carried out on PubMed for obtaining information related to the sources and analogs, chemistry and biosynthesis, physicochemical properties, biological activities, bioavailability and toxicity of apigenin. KEY FINDINGS The literature search resulted in many in vitro, in vivo and a few cohort studies that evidenced the effectiveness of apigenin and its analogs in modulating important molecular targets and signaling pathways such as PI3K/AKT/mTOR, JAK/STAT, NF-κB, MAPK/ERK, Wnt/β-catenin, etc., which play a crucial role in the development and progression of cancer. In addition, apigenin was also shown to inhibit chemoresistance and radioresistance and make cancer cells sensitive to these agents. Reports have further revealed the safety of the compound and the adaptation of nanotechnological approaches for improving its bioavailability. SIGNIFICANCE Hence, the present review recapitulates the properties of apigenin and its pharmacological activities against different types of cancer, which warrant further investigation in clinical settings.

Abstract
5-n-Alkylresorcinols (ARs) are abundant in wheat bran and potentially antioxidative, although the neuroprotective mechanism is not fully understood. The neuroprotective effect of wheat bran ARs on H2O2-induced neuronal cells and the relationship between neuroprotection and the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/antioxidant-response element (ARE) pathway were investigated in this study. Seven homologs were identified in the purified ARs by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Pretreatment with 80 μg mL-1 ARs alleviated 23% HT22 cell death and the up-regulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species level and malondialdehyde under H2O2 stimulation. The neuroprotection effect was proved by the increase in the Nrf2 nuclear location and up-regulation of mRNA and protein expressions of heme oxygenase-1, NAD(P)H quinone dehydrogenase 1, glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit, and glutamate-cysteine ligase modifier subunit l. Wheat bran ARs displayed a neuroprotective function, possibly by promoting the endogenous antioxidant defense system. ARs may be regarded as a functional food ingredient for preventing neurodegenerative diseases in the future.

Abstract
Background Flammulina filiformis (previously known as Asian F. velutipes) is a popular commercial edible mushroom. Many bioactive compounds with medicinal effects, such as polysaccharides and sesquiterpenoids, have been isolated and identified from F. filiformis, but their biosynthesis and regulation at the molecular level remains unclear. In this study, we sequenced the genome of the wild strain F. filiformis Liu355, predicted its biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) and profiled the expression of these genes in wild and cultivar strains and in different developmental stages of the wild F. filiformis strain by a comparative transcriptomic analysis. Results We found that the genome of the F. filiformis was 35.01 Mb in length and harbored 10,396 gene models. Thirteen putative terpenoid gene clusters were predicted and 12 sesquiterpene synthase genes belonging to four different groups and two type I polyketide synthase gene clusters were identified in the F. filiformis genome. The number of genes related to terpenoid biosynthesis was higher in the wild strain (119 genes) than in the cultivar strain (81 genes). Most terpenoid biosynthesis genes were upregulated in the primordium and fruiting body of the wild strain, while the polyketide synthase genes were generally upregulated in the mycelium of the wild strain. Moreover, genes encoding UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase and UDP-glucose dehydrogenase, which are involved in polysaccharide biosynthesis, had relatively high transcript levels both in the mycelium and fruiting body of the wild F. filiformis strain. Conclusions F. filiformis is enriched in a number of gene clusters involved in the biosynthesis of polysaccharides and terpenoid bioactive compounds and these genes usually display differential expression between wild and cultivar strains, even in different developmental stages. This study expands our knowledge of the biology of F. filiformis and provides valuable data for elucidating the regulation of secondary metabolites in this unique F. filiformis strain.

Abstract
Nature, a vast reservoir of pharmacologically active molecules, has been most promising source of drug leads for the cure of various pathological conditions. Formononetin is one of the bioactive isoflavones isolated from different plants mainly from Trifolium pratense, Glycine max, Sophora flavescens, Pycnanthus angolensis, and Astragalus membranaceus. Formononetin has been well-documented for its anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antioxidant properties. Recently anticancer activity of formononetin is widely studied. This review aims to highlight the pharmacological potential of formononetin, thus providing an insight of its status in cancer therapeutics. Formononetin fights progression of cancer via inducing apoptosis, arresting cell cycle, and halting metastasis via targeting various pathways which are generally modulated in several cancers. Although reported data acclaims various biological properties of formononetin, further experimentation on mechanism of its action, medicinal chemistry studies, and preclinical investigations are surely needed to figure out full array of its pharmacological and biological potential.

Abstract
The desiccation-tolerant shrub Myrothamnus flabellifolia has colonised a unique and harsh niche that provides little protection from the elements. It has a wide distribution range in southern Africa, occurring across an environmental gradient that is exceptionally arid in the southwest and highly mesic in the northeast. It is also harvested for use in medicinal preparations, both traditionally and commercially. However, the phytochemical variability of plants from different rainfall regions has not been assessed, nor have the intraspecific relationships been evaluated by means of a rigorously tested phylogeny. The aims of the present study were thus (1) to test a phylogenetic hypothesis for intraspecific relationships in M. flabellifolia; (2) to assess, based on the global metabolomic profiles, whether accessions collected from the three different geographic locations in southern Africa across a rainfall gradient can be differentiated, and if this corroborates the phylogenetic signature; and (3) with the aid of multivariate statistical analysis, identify and evaluate the most significant discriminatory metabolites between the three sampled regions that could act as potential barcodes. The results show that the phylogenetic and metabolomic signatures were congruent, and the metabolomic data were better able to discriminate the different populations collected from the three regions. Several potential barcodes for discriminating the material from the three regions are proposed. Quercetin-rhamnoside and 3-O-methylquercetin, both significant antioxidants, were present at significantly higher quantities in the material from the driest region in the west than from the more mesic regions in the south and east, whereas quercetin-3-O-glucuronide was significantly higher in the latter. A naringenin-like compound or arbutin derivative could discriminate the southern samples from the eastern samples, whereas digalloylglucose differentiated the eastern samples from the southern samples. In summary, the findings of this study imply that the origin of the material should be considered when used in medicinal and cosmetic preparations.

Abstract
Utilization of phenolic compounds in rice husk and bran is important for improving the functionality of rice by-products. Eight rice varieties planted in different area were selected to analyze the phenolic compounds distribution of fractions in Japonica and Indica rice by using UPLC-MS method. A total of 12 phenolic compounds were identified in all rice varieties. Ferulic acid, gallic acid, protocatechuic acid and syringic acid were the dominant phenolic compounds in rice bran, while p-Hydroxybenzaldehyde was the main phenolic compounds existed in rice husk (14.46-23.72 µg·g-1). Bran and husk fractions provide more than 90% of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of whole rice. Regardless of the planting environmental effects, Japonica rice has significant higher phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity than Indica rice (P < 0.05). Therefore, it can be concluded that the distribution of phenolic compounds were strongly correlated with the rice varieties and fractions.

Abstract
To understand molecular mechanism of cold-induced fruiting in Flammulina velutipes, which is one of most popular edible fungi in east Asia, de novo assembly of the F. velutipes transcriptome was carried out. There were 26,888,494 and 26,275,146 clean reads obtained from mycelium and primordia of F. velutipes, respectively. A total of 20,157 unigenes were de novo assembled and 15,058 of them were annotated. Moreover, 7935 unigenes were differentially expressed between mycelium and primordia, 4025 of them were up-regulated and 3910 were down-regulated. GO and KEGG pathway analysis of the differentially expressed unigenes indicated that functional groups associated with two-component signaling pathway, calcium signaling, mitogen-actived protein kinase pathway, molecular chaperones, cell wall and membrane system, play an important role in cold-induced fruiting of F. velutipes. In this work 643 EST-SSRs were identified in 20,157 unigenes and 1560 EST-SSRs primers pairs were designed. Moreover, 5548 and 5955 SNPs were detected in mycelium and primordia, respectively. Consequently, results of this work can serve as a valuable resource for functional genomics study of cold-induced fruiting in F. velutipes.

Flavonoids extracted from D. denneaum paxt. were clearly enriched in fraction II after determining the total flavonoids content; there were 15 characteristic peaks which have been detected; ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS) was applied for structural elucidation of compounds. 13 characteristic peaks including flavonoid-O-glycosides and flavonoid-C-glycosides were determined or preliminarily characterized through comparing retention times and UV and MS spectra with standard compounds or documented literature. The antitumor activity of fraction II on human liver cancer cells HepG2 was investigated. MTT assay method was used to test the antiproliferation activity and to confirm the appropriate treatment concentration as well as inducing time. The morphological changes of the apoptosis cells after being induced by fraction II were observed by a Hoechst reagent and the apoptosis rate was tested by flow cytometry. The results showed that fraction II can inhibit HepG2 cells from proliferation in a dose-dependent and time-dependent manner. The apoptosis experiments indicated that fraction II can significantly induce apoptosis in HepG2 cells in a concentration over 50 μg/mL for 48 h and the most effective level was 150 μg/mL for 48 h.

Abstract
Edible mushrooms are rich sources of bioactive components. In this study, a polyphenol-rich extract, designated as PPEP, was isolated from an edible mushroom, Pleurotus eryngii. Using ultra high performance liquid chromatograph combined with triple time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-TOF/MS/MS), gallic acid monohydrate, 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-propionic acid, methyl gallate, syringic acid, ellagic acid and catechin were identified in PPEP. This phenolic-rich extract PPEP exhibited anti-inflammatory effect in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages by inhibiting the overproduction of pro-inflammatory mediators including nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). It was demonstrated that the anti-inflammatory effects of PPEP were associated with the inhibition of iNOS expression, suppression of p-IκB protein expression and inhibition of NF-κB and IκB mRNA expression. Next, the inhibitory effect of PPEP against human colon cancer cells was also determined. PPEP suppressed cell proliferation of human colon cancer HCT116 cells in a dose- and time-dependent fashion, while it showed no inhibitory effect on normal human colonic myofibroblasts CCD-18Co cells at the same tested concentrations (0-200 μg mL-1). Moreover, PPEP induced cell cycle arrest and led to extensive cellular apoptosis in human colon cancer cells, which was associated with the downregulation of cell cycle-related signaling protein, e.g. cyclin B and cyclin E, and the upregulation of apoptosis-related signaling protein caspase-3 and cleaved caspase-3. Overall, our results provided a basis for using PPEP as a promising preventive agent against inflammatory disease and colon cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The development of alternatives for insulin secretion control in vivo or in vitro represents an important aspect to be investigated. In this direction, natural products have been progressively explored with this aim. In particular, flavonoids are potential candidates to act as insulin secretagogue. OBJECTIVE To study the influence of flavonoid on overall modulation mechanisms of insulin secretion. METHODS The research was conducted in the following databases and platforms: PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Knowledge, SciELO, LILACS, and ScienceDirect, and the MeSH terms used for the search were flavonoids, flavones, islets of Langerhans, and insulin-secreting cells. RESULTS Twelve articles were included and represent the basis of discussion on mechanisms of insulin secretion of flavonoids. Papers in ISI Web of Knowledge were in number of 1, Scopus 44, PubMed 264, ScienceDirect 511, and no papers from LILACS and SciELO databases. CONCLUSION According to the literature, the majority of flavonoid subclasses can modulate insulin secretion through several pathways, in an indication that corresponding molecule is a potential candidate for active materials to be applied in the treatment of diabetes. Abstract
Previous studies have demonstrated an association between neurological diseases and oxidative stress (OS). Naphthoflavone is a synthetic derivative of naturally occurring flavonoids that serves an important role in the treatment and prevention of OS-related diseases. The current study was designed to apply α- and β-Naphthoflavone individually and in combination to counteract the detrimental effects of OS on neurons in vitro. Neuronal SH-SY5Y cells were subjected to 20 µM H2O2, followed by exposure to 20 µM α-Naphthoflavone and/or 10 µM β-Naphthoflavone. Results indicated that α- and β-Naphthoflavone effectively antagonized the apoptosis-promoting effect of H2O2 on neuronal SH-SY5Y cells, and that β-Naphthoflavone significantly (P<0.05) reversed H2O2-inhibited cell viability. Notably, co-treatment of α- and β-Naphthoflavone reversed the H2O2-induced apoptosis rate elevation and cell viability reduction. Further analysis demonstrated that H2O2 inhibited the activities of antioxidant enzymes including catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, but this was reversed by the co-treatment with α- and β-Naphthoflavone and selectively enhanced by the treatment with α- or β-Naphthoflavone. H2O2-stimulated p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase activation was repressed following treatment with α- and/or β-Naphthoflavone, along with a decreased expression of the apoptosis-related factors and inhibited caspase-3 activation. In conclusion, co-treatment with α- and β-Naphthoflavone minimized H2O2-led neuron damage compared with treatment with α- or β-Naphthoflavone, suggesting a synergetic effect between α- and β-Naphthoflavone. This indicates that utilizing α- and β-Naphthoflavone together in the clinical setting may provide a novel therapeutic for neurological disease.

Effect of Cu(2+)-complexation on the scavenging ability of chrysin towards photogenerated singlet molecular oxygen (O2((1)Δg)). Possible biological implications. Abstract
Visible-light irradiation of aqueous-ethanolic solutions of Riboflavin (Rf) in the individual presence of the flavone chrysin (Chr) and its complex with Cu(2+) ([Chr2Cu]; 2:1 L:M) generates singlet molecular oxygen O2((1)Δg), that concomitantly interact with both flavone derivatives. Overall (kt) and reactive (kr) rate constants in the order of 10(7)M(-1)s(-1) were determined for the process. Metal chelation greatly enhances the scavenging ability of [Chr2Cu] towards O2((1)Δg) through a mechanism dominated, in >80%, by the physical component. In this way, practically all O2((1)Δg) is deactivated by the complex without significant loss of the quencher. The isolated flavone quenches O2((1)Δg) in a prevailing reactive fashion. The very low value exhibited by [Chr2Cu] for the kr/kt ratio constitutes a positive quality for antioxidative protectors in biological media, where elevated local concentration and high reactivity of significant molecules make them initial targets for O2((1)Δg) aggression. Finally, two interesting properties in the field of free radicals scavenging by [Chr2Cu] must be mentioned. In first place metal chelation itself, in the obvious sense of free metal ion withdrawal from the oxidizable medium, prevents the initiation of a free radical-mediated oxidation processes through mechanisms of Fenton or lipid peroxidation. In addition, the incorporation of Cu adds to [Chr2Cu] the ability of a free radical scavenger, already described for similar Cu-chelate compounds. This collection of beneficial properties positions the complex as a remarkably promising bioprotector towards ROS-mediated oxidation. A quantification of the efficiency on the initial anti-oxidative effect exerted by Chr and [Chr2Cu] towards tryptophan was carried out. The amino acid is an archetypal molecular model, commonly employed to monitor oxidative degradation of proteinaceous media. It was efficiently photoprotected against O2((1)Δg)-mediated photooxidation by [Chr2Cu].
