Abstract
OBJECTIVES Patient satisfaction is an essential indicator of the doctor-patient relationship. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between primary care quality and patient satisfaction for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in rural western China. METHODS The study utilized the standardized patients (SPs) approach to present typical symptoms of unstable angina and diabetes to rural healthcare providers. After the consultations, the SPs completed a satisfaction survey. Ordinary least squares and quantile regression were used to examine the association between quality of primary care and patient satisfaction. RESULTS We examined 178 anonymous SPs visits. The results showed that higher process quality for angina SPs was correlated with stronger satisfaction for provider ability at a low quantile of ability satisfaction. For diabetes SPs, higher process quality increased overall satisfaction at a low quantile of overall satisfaction, whereas a correct diagnosis significantly contributed to communication satisfaction at a high quantile of communication satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS The study found positive associations between process and diagnosis quality and SPs satisfaction. Notably, the influence of process quality was most significant among patients with lower satisfaction levels. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Provider's process quality could be a key area of improving the satisfaction levels, especially for patients with lower levels of satisfaction.

Abstract
Previous study has demonstrated that the Dietary Inflammation Index (DII) played a role in the risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), however, the prevalence and risk factors for IBD are distinct across locations and groups, and therefore, the findings are debatable and warrant further investigation. A total of 4363 participants were calculated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009 to 2010, of whom 1.21% self-reported a history of IBD. DII values were performed as a good predictor of dietary inflammation based on data from two 24-h dietary reviews in the NHANES database. Comparing the multifarious effects along with variations of the whole population by grouping populations according to DII quartiles, dietary inflammation levels increased progressively from DII quartile 1(Q1) to quartile 4(Q4). The association between DII and IBD was tested with multi-variable logistic regression models, subgroup analyses and weighted generalized additive models. Participants in the Q4 group showed the highest levels of C-reactive protein and reduced haemoglobin and albumin levels. Logistic regression confirmed the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of IBD for DII were 0.99 (0.86, 1.15), 0.97 (0.84, 1.13) and 0.80 (0.66, 0.98) in models 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The negative correlation between DII and IBD among United States adults from the NHANES database became increasingly apparent as covariates were adjusted. Subgroup analyses and smoothed curve fitting confirmed the inverse results. The study revealed that DII was correlated with the overall physical well-being of participants. However, there was no significant association between DII and IBD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Causal association between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart failure (HF) has been controversial. This study used Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis to clarify the potential causal connection between these two conditions. OBJECTIVES The purpose of the study was to investigate the causal relationship between COPD and HF based on the hypothesis that the genetic predisposition to COPD could lead to an increased risk of developing HF METHODS: A two-sample MR analysis of genetic data was performed for COPD and HF. This study was based on genome-wide association study (GWAS) data, including 6,915 patients with confirmed COPD and 186,723 controls. The odds ratios (ORs) and their 95 % confidence intervals (95 %CIs) were estimated using a fixed effects inverse variance weighting (IVW) method. Several supplementary statistical methods, including MR-Egger, weighted median, maximum likelihood, penalized weighted median, and random effects IVW, were applied to enhance the robustness of findings. Moreover, MR-PRESSO was employed as an alternative method for statistical detection. RESULTS Pooled data for HF were obtained from different GWASs, including 4,7309 confirmed HF patients and 930,014 controls. The MR analysis, based on the IVW model, revealed that COPD was significantly associated with an increased risk of HF. Specifically, the obtained findings showed that COPD patients had a higher risk of developing HF (Model 1: OR = 1.068, 95 %CI: 1.006-1.134, p = 0.031; Model 2: OR = 1.038, 95 %CI: 1.006-1.071, p = 0.020), indicating a causal relationship between COPD and HF. No evidence was found to suggest a reverse causal effect of HF on COPD incidence. CONCLUSION The MR analysis substantiates a causal link between COPD and HF, with no evidence supporting a reverse causation from HF to COPD. These findings underscore the importance of proactive COPD management as a potential strategy to prevent the development of HF, highlighting the need for targeted interventions in patients with COPD to mitigate their risk of HF.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) refers to an endocrine disorder syndrome that are correlated with multiple organs and systems. PCOS has an effect on women at all stages of their lives, and it has an incidence nearly ranging from 6% to 20% worldwide. Mitochondrial dysfunctions (e.g., oxidative stress, dynamic imbalance, and abnormal quality control system) have been identified in patients and animal models of PCOS, and the above processes may play a certain role in the development of PCOS and its associated complications. However, their specific pathogenic roles should be investigated in depth. In this review, recent studies on the mechanisms of action of mitochondrial dysfunction in PCOS and its associated clinical manifestations are summarized from the perspective of tissues and organs, and some studies on the treatment of the disease by improving mitochondrial function are reviewed to highlight key role of mitochondrial dysfunction in this syndrome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The incidence of pulmonary nodules has been increasing over the past 30 years. Different types of nodules are associated with varying degrees of malignancy, and they engender inconsistent treatment approaches. Therefore, correct distinction is essential for the optimal treatment and recovery of the patients. The commonly-used medical imaging methods have limitations in distinguishing lung nodules to date. A new approach to this problem may be provided by electrical properties of lung nodules. Nevertheless, difference identification is the basis of correct distinction. So, this paper aims to investigate the differences in electrical properties between various lung nodules. METHODS At variance with existing studies, benign samples were included for analysis. A total of 252 specimens were collected, including 126 normal tissues, 15 benign nodules, 76 adenocarcinomas, and 35 squamous cell carcinomas. The dispersion properties of each tissue were measured over a frequency range of 100 Hz to 100 MHz. And the relaxation mechanism was analyzed by fitting the Cole-Cole plot. The corresponding equivalent circuit was estimated accordingly. RESULTS Results validated the significant differences between malignant and normal tissue. Significant differences between benign and malignant lesions were observed in conductivity and relative permittivity. Adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas are significantly different in conductivity, first-order, second-order differences of conductivity, α-band Cole-Cole plot parameters and capacitance of equivalent circuit. The combination of the different features increased the tissue groups' differences measured by Euclidean distance up to 94.7%. CONCLUSION AND SIGNIFICANCE In conclusion, the four tissue groups reveal dissimilarity in electrical properties. This characteristic potentially lends itself to future diagnosis of non-invasive lung cancer.

Abstract
Deciphering the neuronal response to injury in the spinal cord is essential for exploring treatment strategies for spinal cord injury (SCI). However, this subject has been neglected in part because appropriate tools are lacking. Emerging in vivo imaging and labeling methods offer great potential for observing dynamic neural processes in the central nervous system in conditions of health and disease. This review first discusses in vivo imaging of the mouse spinal cord with a focus on the latest imaging techniques, and then analyzes the dynamic biological response of spinal cord sensory and motor neurons to SCI. We then summarize and compare the techniques behind these studies and clarify the advantages of in vivo imaging compared with traditional neuroscience examinations. Finally, we identify the challenges and possible solutions for spinal cord neuron imaging.

Abstract
rs2736098 is a synonymous polymorphism in TERT (telomerase reverse transcriptase), an enzyme involved in tumor onset of multiple tissues, and should play no roles in carcinogenesis. However, a search in cancer somatic mutation database indicated that the mutation frequency at rs2736098 is much higher than the average one for TERT. Moreover, there are significant H3K4me1 and H3K27Ac signals, two universal histone modifications for active enhancers, surrounding rs2736098. Therefore, we hypothesized that rs2736098 might be within an enhancer region, regulate TERT expression and influence cancer risk. Through luciferase assay, it was verified that the enhancer activity of rs2736098C allele is significantly higher than that of T in multiple tissues. Transfection of plasmids containing TERT coding region with two different alleles indicated that rs2736098C allele can induce a significantly higher TERT expression than T. By chromatin immunoprecipitation, it was observed that the fragment spanning rs2736098 can interact with USF1 (upstream transcription factor 1). The two alleles of rs2736098 present evidently different binding affinity with nuclear proteins. Database and literature search indicated that rs2736098 is significantly associated with carcinogenesis in multiple tissues and count of multiple cell types. All these facts indicated that rs2736098 is also an oncogenic polymorphism and plays important role in cell proliferation.

Abstract
Currently, stem cells are a prominent focus of regenerative engineering research. However, due to the limitations of commonly used stem cell sources, their application in therapy is often restricted to the experimental stage and constrained by ethical considerations. In contrast, urine-derived stem cells (USCs) offer promising advantages for clinical trials and applications. The noninvasive nature of the collection process allows for repeated retrieval within a short period, making it a more feasible option. Moreover, studies have shown that USCs have a protective effect on organs, promoting vascular regeneration, inhibiting oxidative stress, and reducing inflammation in various acute and chronic organ dysfunctions. The application of USCs has also been enhanced by advancements in biomaterials technology, enabling better targeting and controlled release capabilities. This review aims to summarize the current state of research on USCs, providing insights for future applications in basic and clinical settings.

Abstract
Developing high-performance electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for producing green hydrogen, yet it remains challenging due to the sluggish kinetics in alkaline environments. Pt is located near the peak of HER volcano plot, owing to its exceptional performance in hydrogen adsorption and desorption, and Rh plays an important role in H2O dissociation. Lanthanides (Ln) are commonly used to modulate the electronic structure of materials and further influence the adsorption/desorption of reactants, intermediates, and products, and noble metal-Ln alloys are recognized as effective platforms where Ln elements regulate the catalytic properties of noble metals. Here Pt1.5Rh1.5Tm alloy is synthesized using the sodium vapor reduction method. This alloy demonstrates superior catalytic activity, being 4.4 and 6.6 times more effective than Pt/C and Rh/C, respectively. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the upshift of d-band center and the charge transfer induced by alloying promote adsorption and dissociation of H2O, making Pt1.5Rh1.5Tm alloy more favorable for the alkaline HER reaction, both kinetically and thermodynamically.

Abstract
Layered Na2FePO4F (NFPF) cathode material has received widespread attention due to its green nontoxicity, abundant raw materials, and low cost. However, its poor inherent electronic conductivity and sluggish sodium ion transportation seriously impede its capacity delivery and cycling stability. In this work, NFPF by Ti doping and conformal carbon layer coating via solid-state reaction is modified. The results of experimental study and density functional theory calculations reveal that Ti doping enhances intrinsic conductivity, accelerates Na-ion transport, and generates more Na-ion storage sites, and pyrolytic carbon from polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) uniformly coated on the NFPF surface improves the surface/interface conductivity and suppresses the side reactions. Under the combined effect of Ti doping and carbon coating, the optimized NFPF (marked as 5T-NF@C) exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, with a high capacity of 108.4 mAh g-1 at 0.2C, a considerable capacity of 80.0 mAh g-1 even at high current density of 10C, and a high capacity retention rate of 81.8% after 2000 cycles at 10C. When assembled into a full cell with a hard carbon anode, 5T-NF@C also show good applicability. This work indicates that co-modification of Ti doping and carbon coating makes NFPF achieve high rate and long cycle performance for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to investigate whether computed tomography (CT)-measured erector spinae parameters (ESPs) have diagnostic, severity assessment, and prognostic predictive value in uremic sarcopenia (US). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 202 uremic patients were enrolled and divided into two groups: a control group and a sarcopenia group. Sarcopenia was classified into two types: severe and nonsevere. The area, volume, and density of the erector spinae (ES) were measured using chest CT images, and the relevant ESP, including the erector spinae index (ESI), total erector spinae volume (TESV), erector spinae density (ESD), and erector spinae gauge (ESG) were calculated. The occurrence of adverse events was followed-up for 36 months. The diagnostic value and severity of US were determined using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Survival curves diagnosed using CT were plotted and compared with the curve drawn using the gold standard. Cox regression analysis was used to identify independent risk factors associated with survival in US. RESULTS With an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.840 and 0.739, the combined ESP has diagnostic value and the ability to assess the severity of US. There was no significant difference in the survival curve between the combined ESP for the diagnosis of US and the gold standard (P > 0.05). ESI is a standalone predictor of survival in patients with US. CONCLUSION ESP measured by CT has diagnostic values for US and its severity, as well as being a predictive value for the prognosis of US.

Abstract
The phenotype-first approach (PFA) and data-driven approach (DDA) have both greatly facilitated anthropological studies and the mapping of trait-associated genes. However, the pros and cons of the two approaches are poorly understood. Here, we systematically evaluated the two approaches and analyzed 14,838 facial traits in 2,379 Han Chinese individuals. Interestingly, the PFA explained more facial variation than the DDA in the top 100 and 1,000 except in the top 10 phenotypes. Accordingly, the ratio of heterogeneous traits extracted from the PFA was much greater, while more homogenous traits were found using the DDA for different sex, age, and BMI groups. Notably, our results demonstrated that the sex factor accounted for 30% of phenotypic variation in all traits extracted. Furthermore, we linked DDA phenotypes to PFA phenotypes with explicit biological explanations. These findings provide new insights into the analysis of multidimensional phenotypes and expand the understanding of phenotyping approaches.

Abstract
Due to intensive industrial production and living activities, urban areas are the main anthropogenic mercury (Hg) emission sources. After entering the environment through exhaust gases, wastewater or waste residues, Hg can migrate and transform among different environmental compartments in various species, such as elemental mercury (Hg0), divalent mercury (Hg2+) and methylmercury (MeHg). Studies have yet to report on the multimedia behaviors of Hg in urban areas due to the complexity of the processes involved. In this study, the atmospheric Hg emission in Dalian, a coastal city in Northeast China, was estimated by an anthropogenic emission inventory, and a Level III multimedia model was constructed based on the fugacity/aquivalence method to simulate the fate of Hg in air, water, soil, sediment, vegetation and film. The total annual atmospheric emission was 9.91 t, of which coal combustion and non-coal sources accounted for 70.1 % and 29.9 %, respectively. Atmospheric emission and advection were dominated by Hg0, and aquatic emission and advection were dominated by Hg2+. The migration of air-vegetation, vegetation-soil and soil-air were three important pathways of Hg in urban areas. The model was validated by collecting local soil and vegetation samples and regional air, seawater and sediment monitoring data. The scenario simulation indicated that the local load would decrease to different extents with a 21.0 % reduction in atmospheric Hg emission by implementing the "coal-to-gas" measures. Our developed model can characterize the fate of Hg in coastal urban areas and provide a reference for control strategies.

Abstract
Understanding the ethnic gap in protective behavior and its explanatory factors is a promising step for reducing pandemic-induced disparities. However, no studies have endeavored to identify the factors contributing to a gap in protective behaviors between Han and minority ethnicities during COVID-19 pandemic in rural China. We aimed to analyze the gap in protective behaviors between Han and minority residents in rural China. We conducted cross-sectional studies in multi-ethnic rural China in 2020. A total of 1640 participants from Han and minority groups were invited to participate. The decomposition method was applied to analyze the gap in protective behaviors and its associated factors between the Han and minority groups. Participants in the Han group had a higher protective behavioral score (9.26 ± 1.20) than the minority group (8.97 ± 1.50), yielding a significant gap in protective behaviors between Han and minority ethnicities of 0.29. Socio-demographic characteristics, health status, the degree of knowledge held about COVID-19, and psychological responses to COVID-19 explained 79.3 % (0.23/0.29) of the behavioral gap between the Han and minority groups. The difference in household asset levels was the largest explained contributor to the behavioral gap (52.17 %) (0.12/0.23), followed by fear felt for COVID-19 (-21.74 %) (-0.05/0.23). Differences in educational attainment, degree of knowledge held about COVID-19, and self-efficacy in response to COVID-19 each explained 17.4 % (0.04/0.23) of the behavioral gap. In conclusion, Han group show greater protective behaviors than minority ethnic groups. To drive better protective behavior in the most vulnerable communities, targeted, group-specific COVID-19 preventative messages deployed in public health communication strategies is suggested to enhance individual confidence in coping with the pandemic while creating a healthy amount of fear for public health crisis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancer types in males and rs12621278:A > G has been suggested to be associated with this disease by previous genome-wide association studies. One thousand genomes project data analysis indicated that rs12621278:A > G is within two long-core haplotypes. However, the origin, causal variant(s), and molecular function of these haplotypes were remaining unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS Population genetics analysis and functional genomics work was performed for this locus. RESULTS Phylogeny analysis verified that the rare haplotype is derived from Neanderthal introgression. Genome annotation suggested that three genetic variants in the core haplotypes, rs116108611:G > A, rs139972066:AAAAAAAA > AAAAAAAAA, and rs3835124:ATTTATT > ATT, are located in functional regions. Luciferase assay indicated that rs139972066:AAAAAAAA > AAAAAAAAA and rs116108611:G > A are not able to alter ITGA6 (integrin alpha 6) and ITGA6 antisense RNA 1 expression, respectively. In contrast, rs3835124:ATTTATT > ATT can significantly influence PDK1 (pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 1) expression, which was verified by expression quantitative trait locus analysis. This genetic variant can alter transcription factor cut like homeobox 1 interaction efficiency. The introgressed haplotype was observed to be subject to positive selection in East Asian populations. The molecular function of the haplotype suggested that Neanderthal should be with lower PDK1 expression and further different energy homeostasis from modern human. CONCLUSION This study provided new insight into the contribution of Neanderthal introgression to human phenotypes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) is a common autoimmune disorder that affects up to 0.3-3% of the global population. Ferroptosis has recently been identified to play a significant role in autoimmune diseases. However, the molecular mechanisms of ferroptosis in the initiation and progression of pSS remains unclear. MATERIAL AND METHODS To investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the occurrence and progression of pSS, we utilized a comprehensive approach by integrating data obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database with data from the FerrDb database to identify the ferroptosis-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Furthermore, we implemented an innovative transcriptomic analysis method utilizing a computer-aided algorithm to establish a network between hub genes associated with ferroptosis and the immune microenvironment in pSS patients. RESULTS Our results revealed significant differences in the gene expression profiles of pSS samples compared to normal tissues, with 1,830 significantly up-regulated genes and 1,310 significantly down-regulated genes. In addition, our results showed a significant increase in the proportions of B cells and CD4+ T cells in pSS samples compared to normal tissues. AND then, our analysis revealed that a combination of six ferroptosis-related genes, including TBK1, SLC1A4, PIK3CA, ENO3, EGR1, and ATG5, could serve as optimal markers for the diagnosis of pSS. The combined analysis of these six genes accurately diagnosed the occurrence of pSS. CONCLUSIONS This study offers valuable insights into the pathogenesis of pSS and highlights the importance of targeting ferroptosis-related DEGs, which suggests a novel treatment strategy for pSS.

Abstract
Members of Puccinia (Pucciniaceae, Pucciniales) are known as plant pathogens worldwide, which are characterized by their morphology, host association, and molecular data of various genes. In the present study, 10 specimens of Puccinia were collected from four herbaceous plants (Anaphalis hancockii, Anthriscus sylvestris, Halenia elliptica, and Pilea pumila) in China and identified based on morphology and phylogeny. As a result, 10 samples represent four undescribed species of Puccinia, viz., P. apdensia, P. decidua, P. dermatis, and P. lianchengensis, spp. nov. P. apdensia is characterized by its smooth teliospores with thickened apex. P. decidua represents the first Puccinia species inhabiting the host Anaphalis hancockii and is distinguished from the other Puccinia species by its telia and uredinia surrounded by the epidermis. P. dermatis from Halenia elliptica differs from the other Puccinia species on the host genus Halenia by the telia that have epidermis and teliospores with sparsely irregular granulated protrusions. P. lianchengensis is characterized by its teliospore surface with fishnet ornamentation and urediniospores without prominent caps. All of the new species are described and illustrated in this study.

Abstract
Design of highly efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of paramount importance for water electrolysis, but still a considerable challenge because of the slow HER kinetics in alkaline environments. Alloying is recognized as an effective strategy to enhance the catalytic properties. Lanthanides (Ln) are recognized as an electronic and structural regulator, attributed to their unique 4f electron behavior and the phenomenon known as lanthanide contraction. Here, a new class of Rh3Ln intermetallics (IMs) are synthesized using the sodium vapor reduction method. The alloying process induced an upshift of the d-band center and electron transfer from Ln to Rh, resulting in optimized adsorption and dissociation energies for H2O molecules. Consequently, Rh3Tb IMs exhibited outstanding HER activity in both alkaline environments and seawater, displaying an overpotential of only 19 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 22.2 mV dec-1. Remarkably, the current density of Rh3Tb IMs at 100 mV overpotential is 8.6 and 5.7 times higher than that of Rh/C and commercial Pt/C, respectively. This work introduces a novel approach to the rational design of HER electrocatalysis and sheds light on the role of lanthanides in electrocatalyst systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accumulating evidence suggests that the gut microbiome is involved in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance (IR). However, the link between two of the most prevalent bowel disorders, chronic diarrhea and constipation, and the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, a marker of IR, has not yet been investigated. AIM To investigate the potential association between TyG and the incidence of chronic diarrhea and constipation. METHODS This cross-sectional study enrolled 2400 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database from 2009-2010. TyG was used as an exposure variable, with chronic diarrhea and constipation as determined by the Bristol Stool Form Scale used as the outcome variables. A demographic investigation based on TyG quartile subgroups was performed. The application of multivariate logistic regression models and weighted generalized additive models revealed potential correlations between TyG, chronic diarrhea, and constipation. Subgroup analyses were performed to examine the stability of any potential associations. RESULTS In the chosen sample, chronic diarrhea had a prevalence of 8.00%, while chronic constipation had a prevalence of 8.04%. In multiple logistic regression, a more prominent positive association was found between TyG and chronic diarrhea, particularly in model 1 (OR = 1.45; 95%CI: 1.17-1.79, P = 0.0007) and model 2 (OR = 1.40; 95%CI: 1.12-1.76, P = 0.0033). No definite association was observed between the TyG levels and chronic constipation. The weighted generalized additive model findings suggested a more substantial positive association with chronic diarrhea when TyG was less than 9.63 (OR = 1.89; 95%CI: 1.05-3.41, P = 0.0344), and another positive association with chronic constipation when it was greater than 8.2 (OR = 1.74; 95%CI: 1.02-2.95, P = 0.0415). The results of the subgroup analyses further strengthen the extrapolation of these results to a wide range of populations. CONCLUSION Higher TyG levels were positively associated with abnormal bowel health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, the oldest old population is expected to triple by 2050. Hospitalization and malnutrition can result in progressive functional decline in older adults. Minimizing the impact of hospitalization on functional status in older adults has the potential to maintain independence, reduce health and social care costs, and maximize years in a healthy state. This study aimed to systematically review the literature to identify nutritional interventions that target physical function, body composition, and cognition in the older population (≥ 75 years). METHODS A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of nutritional interventions on physical function, body composition, and cognition in adults aged ≥ 75 years or mean age ≥80 years. Searches of PubMed (National Institutes of Health, National Library of Medicine), Scopus (Elsevier), EMBASE (Elsevier), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) with Full Text (EBSCOhost), and PsycInfo (EBSCOhost) were conducted. Screening, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed in duplicate and independently (CRD42022355984; https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?RecordID=355984). RESULTS Of 8311 citations identified, 2939 duplicates were excluded. From 5372 citations, 189 articles underwent full-text review leaving a total of 12 studies for inclusion. Interventions were food-based, protein-based, carbohydrate-based, personalized, or used parenteral nutrition. Ten studies monitored anthropometric or body composition changes with three showing maintenance or improvements in lean mass, body mass index, triceps skinfold, and mid-upper arm circumference compared with the control group. Six studies monitored physical function but only the largest study found a beneficial effect on activities of daily living. Two of three studies showed the beneficial effects of nutritional intervention on cognition. CONCLUSION There are few, high-quality, nutrition-based interventions in older adults ≥75 years. Despite heterogeneity, our findings suggest that large, longer-term (>2 weeks) nutritional interventions have the potential to maintain body composition, physical function, and cognition in adults aged 75 years and older during hospitalization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Periodontitis is closely associated with chronic systemic diseases. Healthy lifestyle interventions have health-enhancing effects on chronic systemic disorders and periodontitis, but the extent to which healthy lifestyle combinations are associated with periodontitis is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between periodontitis and different healthy lifestyle combinations. METHODS 5611 participants were included from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2009-2014). Six healthy lifestyles factors were defined as fulfilling either: non-smoking, moderate drinking, moderate body mass index (BMI), physical activity, healthy sleep and appropriate total energy intake. Then, the adjusted logistic regression models were performed to identify the association between the periodontitis and the scoring system composed of six lifestyles (0-6 scale). Finally, different scenarios were dynamically and randomly combined to identify the optimal and personalized combination mode. RESULTS Higher healthy lifestyle scores were significantly associated with lower periodontitis prevalence (p < 0.05). Four lifestyle factors (smoking, drinking, BMI, and sleep) significantly varied between the periodontitis and healthy groups (p < 0.05). Smoking was considered as a strong independent risk factor for periodontitis in both former and current smokers. Results further indicated that the combination of these four lifestyles played the most essential role in determining the magnitude of periodontitis occurrence (odds ratio [OR]: 0.33; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.21 to 0.50). In the total population, the majority of three lifestyle combinations outperformed the two combination models, whereas the two-combination of nonsmoking-drinking (OR: 0.39; 95% CI: 0.27 to 0.58) had relatively lower periodontitis prevalence than the three-combination of healthy drinking-BMI-sleep (OR: 0.42; 95% CI: 0.26 to 0.66). CONCLUSION This cross-sectional study suggests that smoking, drinking, BMI, and sleep are significantly related with periodontitis and smoking is the principal risk factor related among them. This study provides various customized lifestyle combinations for periodontitis prevention.

Abstract
The radial forearm free flap (RFFF) is associated with donor site morbidity. This study aimed to quantify the functional and aesthetic outcomes after closure of the RFFF donor site using triangular full-thickness skin grafts (FTSGs) harvested adjacent to the flap or traditional split-thickness skin grafts (STSGs). The study included patients who underwent oral cavity reconstruction with an RFFF between March 2017 and August 2021. The patients were divided into two groups based on the donor site closure method: FTSG or STSG. The primary outcomes were biomechanical grip strength, pinch strength, and range of wrist movements. Subjective donor site morbidity, aesthetic and functional results were also analysed. The study included 75 patients (FTSG n = 35; STSG n = 40). Postoperatively, there was a statistically significant difference in grip strength (P = 0.049) and wrist extension (P = 0.047) between the FTSG and STSG groups, in favour of the STSG. Differences between the groups in pinch strength and other wrist motions were not statistically significant. The harvesting time was significantly shorter for the FTSG (P = 0.041) and the appearance of the donor site was better (P = 0.026) when compared to the STSG. Cold intolerance was more frequent in the STSG group (32.5% STSG vs 6.7% FTSG; P = 0.017). Subjective function, numbness, pain, hypertrophic scar, itching, and social stigma did not differ significantly between the groups. Compared with the STSG, the FTSG showed better cosmesis and avoided additional donor sites, with clinically negligible differences in hand biomechanics.

Abstract
The development of an integrated material system capable of effectively organizing and combining multisource information, such as dynamic pigmentary, structural, and fluorescent colors, is significant and challenging. Achieving such programmable dynamic information storage can considerably enhance the diversity and security of information deliveries. Here, a polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal system with highly temperature-sensitive structural color and light-sensitive pigmentary and fluorescence colors is presented. The prepared cholesteric liquid crystals (clcs) can reversibly change their structural color from red to blue within variational 3 °C near room temperature, and exhibit a gradually adjustable fluorescence which can transform from blue to pink and finally to bright red. All this dynamic information is programmable and tailored, hundreds of thousands of (>540 000) pattern combinations can easily be achieved by optical writing with a "bagua" pattern photomask. Therefore, if the corresponding code combinations to the pattern are assigned particular meanings, encrypted transmission of information with very high security can be achieved by utilizing applicable information encoding tables and decryption rules.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of the central government-funded echinococcosis control programme in Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, Gansu Province from 2007 to 2022, so as to provide insights into echinococcosis control. METHODS Administrative villages were sampled using a multi-stage cluster random sampling method from Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, Gansu Province from 2007 to 2022, and all residents at ages of 12 years and older in the sampled villages were screened for echinococcosis, and schools were sampled using a cluster sampling method, and all children at ages of 12 years and older in the sampled schools were screened for echinococcosis. Domestic dogs were sampled using a systematic random sampling method, and one domestic dog stool sample was collected from each household. Stray dog stool samples were collected outside the villages, and Echinococcus coproantigens were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in domestic and stray dogs. In addition, echinococcosis was screened in sheep and cattle in designated slaughterhouses in Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County. The trends in the prevalence of echinococcosis in humans and livestock and the positive rate of Echinococcus coproantigens in dogs were examined with the Cochran-Armitage trend test. In addition, individuals screened for echinococcosis were randomly sampled from 2007 to 2022 for survey on the awareness of echinococcosis control knowledge. RESULTS A total of 290 356 person-times were screened for echinococcosis among residents at ages of 12 years and older in Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, Gansu Province from 2007 to 2022, with 1 094 residents detected with cystic echinococcosis, and the detection of echinococcosis appeared a tendency towards a gradual decline over years (χ2 = 358.602, P < 0.001). A total of 32 931 person-times were screened for echinococcosis among children at ages of 12 years and older in Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, Gansu Province from 2007 to 2022, with 296 children detected with echinococcosis, and the detection of echinococcosis appeared a tendency towards a gradual decline over years (χ2 = 267.673, P < 0.001). A total of 33 230 domestic dog stool samples were tested for Echinococcus coproantigens in Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, Gansu Province from 2007 to 2022, with 1 777 Echinococcus coproantigens-positive samples tested, and the positive rate of Echinococcus coproantigens appeared a tendency towards a decline in domestic dogs over years (χ2 = 2 210.428, P < 0.001), while the positive rate of Echinococcus coproantigens showed a tendency towards a rise in domestic animals from 2016 to 2022 (χ2 = 37.745, P < 0.001). The positive rate of Echinococcus coproantigens remained relatively stable in stray dogs in Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, Gansu Province from 2019 to 2022 (χ2 = 0.315, P = 0.575). A total of 10 973 sheep were screened for echinococcosis in Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County from 2007 to 2022, with 334 sheep detected with echinococcosis, and the detection of echinococcosis appeared a tendency towards a decline in sheep over years (χ2 = 53.579, P < 0.001); however, there was no significant change in the detection of echinococcosis during the period from 2015 through 2022 (χ2 = 1.520, P = 0.218). A total of 2 400 cattle were screened for echinococcosis in Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County from 2017 to 2022, with 231 cattle detected with echinococcosis, and the detection of echinococcosis showed a tendency towards a decline over years (χ2 = 5.579, P < 0.05). The awareness of echinococcosis control knowledge increased from 44.37% in 2007 to 94.00% in 2022 among residents at ages of 12 years and older and from 52.50% in 2007 to 92.50% in 2022 among children at ages of 12 years and older in Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, respectively. CONCLUSIONS There has been a reduction in the detection of echinococcosis in humans and domestic animals and the positive rate of Echinococcus coproantigens in dogs and a rise in the awareness of the echinococcosis control knowledge following the implementation of the central government-funded echinococcosis control programme in Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, Gansu Province; however, integrated echinococcosis control measures are still required for further control of the prevalence of echinococcosis.

Abstract
Background Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are closely associated with the survival rate of transplanted fat in breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery. Nevertheless, the intrinsic mechanisms regulating ADSCs adipogenic differentiation remain ambiguous. The aim of our study was to explore the relevant genes and pathways to elucidate the potential mechanisms of adipogenic differentiation in ADSCs. Methods The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) dataset GSE61302 was downloaded and analyzed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Key genes and signaling pathways were obtained through Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) functional and enrichment analysis. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and hub gene analyses were performed with the Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins (STRING) database and Cytoscape software. Finally, the transcription levels of hub genes in the adipogenic differentiated group and undifferentiated group of ADSCs were compared via real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Results In total, 1,091 DEGs were identified through bioinformatics analysis of the adipogenic differentiated group and undifferentiated group. If was then found that the 10 downregulated key genes, CCNB1, NUSAP1, DLGAP5, TTK, CCNB2, KIF23, BUB1B, CDC20, CDCA8, and KIF11 may play important roles in the adipogenic differentiation of ADSCs. Subsequent in vitro experimental verification also revealed that the messenger RNA (mRNA) expression levels of cyclin B1 in adipogenic differentiated cells and undifferentiated cells were significantly different at the early stage (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference at the late stage (P>0.05). Conclusions As a key gene, CCNB1 might be a potential biomarker in the adipogenic differentiation of ADSCs at the early stage.

Abstract
The synthesis of two versatile fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Eu(4-NCP)(1,4-bdc)]n·0.5H2O (1) and [Eu(4-NCP)(4,4'-bpdc)]n·0.75H2O (2) (HNCP = 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)imidazo(4,5-f)-(1,10)phenanthroline, 1,4-H2bdc = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid, 4,4'-H2bpdc = 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid), was carried out using a hydrothermal method. These MOFs were characterized through various advanced technologies to determine their structural information. The results indicate that both MOFs exhibited 3D network structures with specific topologies. Furthermore, these MOFs demonstrated exceptional thermal stabilities and adsorption capabilities. Additionally, complex 2 was utilized for studying the fluorescence sensing properties of various micronutrients including metal ions, nitro aromatic compounds, and biological small molecules. Notably, complex 2 showed promising potential as a multifunctional sensor for selectively detecting Fe3+, nitrobenzene, and ascorbic acid in aqueous solutions through fluorescence quenching with low limits of detection (LODs ∼ 10-7 M) and high quenching constants (Ksv ∼ 103 M-1). Moreover, the detection mechanism of complex 2 was further investigated by using experimental methods and DFT calculations.

Abstract
With the miniaturization and high integration of electronic devices, high-performance thermally conductive composites have received increasing attention. The construction of hierarchical structures is an effective strategy to reduce interfacial thermal resistance and enhance composite thermal conductivity. In this study, by decorating carbon fibers (CF) with needle-like ZnO nanowires, hierarchical hybrid fillers (CF@ZnO) were rationally designed and synthesized using the hydrothermal method, which was further used to construct oriented aligned filler networks via the simple freeze-casting process. Subsequently, epoxy (EP)-based composites were prepared using the vacuum impregnation method. Compared with the pure CF, the CF@ZnO hybrid fillers led to a significant increase in thermal conductivity, which was mainly due to the fact that the ZnO nanowires could act as bridging links between CF to increase more thermally conductive pathways, which in turn reduced interfacial thermal resistance. In addition, the introduction of CF@ZnO fillers was also beneficial in improving the thermal stability of the EP-based composites, which was favorable for practical thermal management applications.

Abstract
Wumei pills (WMP), a classical Chinese herbal formula, have shown efficacy in the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM). However, the underlying mechanisms by which WMP simultaneously targets these distinct diseases remain unclear. In this study, a network pharmacology approach was employed to unravel the potential molecular mechanisms of WMP in UC and T2DM treatment. This analysis provides a bioinformatics foundation for the traditional Chinese medicine concept of "treating different diseases with the same treatment." WMP was found to contain 65 active components, including flavonoids, sterols, and alkaloids, that act on 228 shared targets for UC and T2DM. Network analysis identified 5 core compounds (Quercetin, Kaempferol, beta-Sitosterol, Isocorypalmine, Stigmasterol) and 8 core proteins (AKT1, ESR1, TP53, IL6, JUN, MYC, TNF, EGFR) that play pivotal roles in the treatment of UC and T2DM by WMP. WMP exerts its therapeutic effects by modulating signaling pathways, including the NF-κB pathway, PI3K-Akt pathway, and p53 pathway. Molecular docking results indicate a strong binding affinity between core compounds and core genes. This study bridges the understanding of 2 diseases using network pharmacology and provides insights into shared therapeutic mechanisms, opening doors for further research in modern Chinese herbal formulations.

Abstract
The clinical characteristics, auxiliary examinations, skin and neuropathological features of 7 patients who had reticular cyanosis with peripheral neuropathy from the Department of Neurology, Huashan Hospital, Fudan University from January 2019 to December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Among the 7 patients, 5 were female and 2 were male.The age of onset of peripheral neuropathy was (39.8±21.3) years and the disease duration of peripheral neuropathy was (2.7±2.3) years. Three patients had acute onset and 4 patients had chronic onset. All the patients had limb numbness, with limb weakness in 6 patients and pain in 5 cases. Neuroelectrophysiological examination revealed 1 case of mononeuropathy, 2 cases of polyneuropathy, 2 cases of peripheral neuropathy, and 2 cases of sensory neuron neuropathy. Skin biopsy was performed in 3 patients, which presented hyperplasia and expansion of blood vessels in the dermis with lymphocyte infiltration. Nerve biopsy was performed in 3 patients, indicating axonal damage. Reticular cyanosis with peripheral neuropathy characterizes with numbness and weakness of limbs, most of which were accompanied by pain. Electrophysiological changes are in various forms. The pathological changes are dominated by the damage of axonal.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to identify the latent subtypes of subjective well-being (SWB) and associated factors in older adults without a confidant in China. Methods The data came from the most recent (seventh) wave (2018) of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). This cross-sectional study included 350 older adults who lacked a close confidant. We utilized latent class analysis and multiple logistic regression models to examine the latent SWB subtypes and associated factors. Results Three distinct patterns of SWB were identified: the very low SWB class (32%), the medium-low SWB class (46%), and the low evaluative and high affective SWB class (22%). The results indicated that compared to the low evaluative and high affective SWB class, respondents who self-rated their health as not good, currently drank alcohol and rated their financial status as poor/very poor were more likely to be in the very low SWB class, while those who participated in social activities were less likely to be in the very low SWB class. Respondents who had limitations in instrumental activity of daily living (IADL) and rated their financial status as poor/very poor were more likely to be in the medium-low SWB class. However, gender did not affect SWB patterns. Conclusion Our findings highlight awareness of the heterogeneity of SWB in older adults without close confidants and provide valuable information for the development of tailored intervention programs to improve their well-being.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Air pollution is affecting the health of millions of people all over the world. The causal correlations of PM2.5, PM10, and nitrogen dioxide (NOx), as the main fine particulate matter, and coronary heart disease (CHD) are yet to be explored. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) has been a principal factor in the pathogenesis of CHD. It is an interesting issue to consider whether LDL mediates the effect of air pollutants in CHD pathogenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS A genome-wide association study (GWAS) on the European population, followed up from 2010 to 2018, involving over 400,000 participants, was based on a land-use regression model. The annual mean concentrations of major air pollutant particles, PM2.5 (n=423,796), PM10 (n=423,796), and NOx (n=456,380), were recorded. The large GWAS database of CHD covered over ten million SNPs with independent single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). LDL database collected major biochemical blood parameters from over 400,000 patients (n=440,546). Taken together, we conducted independent two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses for the causality between air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, and NOx) and CHD. Multivariate MR analysis was conducted using causal relationships to determine the direct effects of exposure on outcome. The fixed-effect inverse variance weighted (IVW2) method was mainly employed to assess this relationship, with a confidence interval of 95% for the odds ratio (OR). Also, MR-Egger, weighted median, maximum likelihood ratio method, and random-effects inverse variance-weighted (IVW1) method were adopted as supplementary methods. RESULTS Two-sample MR results based on the IVW2 method suggested positive correlations between PM2.5 and CHD [OR 1.875 (1.279-2.748), p=0.001], PM10 and CHD [OR 2.586 (1.479-4.523), p=0.001], and NOx and CHD [OR 2.991 (2.021-4.427), p=4.37E-08]. The direct effect and mediating proportion were calculated using multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR). Lastly, the mediating proportions of LDL in the regulatory roles of PM2.5, PM10, and NOx in CHD were 2.82%, 4.73%, and 9.54%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS PM2.5, PM10, and NOx share direct causal associations with CHD, and LDL performs a mediating role in this pathogenic process. Early prevention against air pollution (such as increasing green areas and reducing large-scale industrial dust emissions) and early lipid-lowering treatment can effectively prevent the occurrence of CHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome induced by pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA-HSOS) is a complication of drug-induced liver damage. Few studies have examined the relationship between pathological changes and clinical circumstances in PA-HSOS. The Drum Tower Severity Scoring System (DTSS) was developed using prognostic indicators from clinical treatment outcomes. We hypothesized that the severity of pathological damage is consistent with DTSS. AIMS We aimed to improve our understanding and assessment of vascular liver injury disease histopathology by studying larger sample sizes of human histopathological samples. We also wanted to confirm the link between histopathological findings and DTSS. METHODS The study included 62 patients with PA-HSOS who underwent transjugular liver biopsy. Their hepatic pathological tissues were evaluated. Analyses of linear regression and Spearman's correlation were employed to examine the relationship between DTSS and pathological characteristics. RESULTS Clinical performance and the DTSS score were used to determine histopathological severity. The sinusoidal congestion area (SCA), central venous endothelial injury (CVEI), and fibrinoid exudation in congestion foci (FECF) were significant indicators. SCA was linearly related to the DTSS score. CONCLUSION Our findings show that hepatic pathological characteristics correlate with DTSS scores in PA-HSOS. SCA, CVEI, and FECF may be helpful for determining PA-HSOS severity.

Abstract
Nephropathy injury is a prevalent complication observed in individuals with diabetes, serving as a prominent contributor to end-stage renal disease, and the advanced glycation products (AGEs) are important factors that induce kidney injury in patients with diabetes. Addressing this condition remains a challenging aspect in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum NKK20 strain (NKK20) which protects against diabetic kidney disease (DKD) based on animal and cell models. The results showed that the NKK20 can significantly reduce renal inflammatory response, serum oxidative stress response, and AGE concentration in diabetic mice. After treatment with NKK20, the kidney damage of diabetic mice was significantly improved, and more importantly, the concentration of butyrate, a specific anti-inflammatory metabolite of intestinal flora in the stool of diabetic mice, was significantly increased. In addition, nontargeted metabolomics analysis showed a significant difference between the metabolites in the mouse serum contents of the NKK20 administration group and those in the nephropathy injury group, in which a total of 24 different metabolites that were significantly affected by NKK20 were observed, and these metabolites were mainly involved in glycerophospholipid metabolism and arachidonic acid metabolism. Also, the administration of butyrate to human kidney- (HK-) 2 cells that were stimulated by AGEs resulted in a significant upregulation of ZO-1, Occludin, and E-cadherin gene expressions and downregulation of α-SMA gene expression. This means that butyrate can maintain the tight junction structure of HK-2 cells and inhibit fibrosis. Butyrate also significantly inhibited the activation of PI3K/Akt pathway. These results indicate that NKK20 can treat kidney injury in diabetic mice by reducing blood glucose and AGE concentration and increasing butyrate production in the intestine. By inhibiting PI3K pathway activation in HK-2 cells, butyrate maintains a tight junction structure of renal tubule epithelial cells and inhibits renal tissue fibrosis. These results suggest that NKK20 is helpful to prevent and treat the occurrence and aggravation of diabetic kidney injury.

Abstract
Background Owing to the aggressiveness and treatment-refractory nature of cancer, ideal candidates for early diagnosis and treatment are needed. Golgi transport 1B (GOLT1B) has been associated with cellular malignant behaviors and immune responses in colorectal and lung cancer, but a systematic pan-cancer analysis on GOLT1B has not been conducted. Methods The expression status and clinical association of GOLT1B in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were analyzed. Genetic and methylation alterations in GOLT1B were explored. The relationship between GOLT1B and immune cell infiltration was also investigated. Genes related to GOLT1B expression were selected and analyzed. Results GOLT1B was highly expressed in most tumors, and there was a positive correlation between GOLT1B expression and clinical pathological parameters. High expression levels of GOLT1B have been associated with poor prognosis of most cancers. Copy number amplification was the primary type of GOLT1B genetic alterations, which was related to the prognosis of pan-cancer cases. There were different levels of GOLT1B promoter methylation across cancer types. The methylation level of the probe cg07371838 and cg25816357 was closely associated with prognosis in diverse cancers. There was also a positive correlation between GOLT1B genetic alterations and CD4+ T lymphocytes, especially the Th2 subset, as well as between GOLT1B expression and the estimated infiltration value of cancer-associated fibroblasts. Serine/threonine kinase receptor-associated protein (STRAP), integrator complex subunit 13 (INTS13), and ethanolamine kinase 1 (ETNK1) were the most relevant genes for GOLT1B expression, and their interactions with GOLT1B were involved in regulating the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β receptor signaling pathway and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Conclusions This pan-cancer analysis provided a comprehensive understanding of the oncogenic role of GOLT1B, highlighting a potential mechanism whereby GOLT1B influences the tumor microenvironment, as well as cancer immunotherapy.

Abstract
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a debilitating condition that is frequently accompanied by neuropathic pain, resulting in significant physical and psychological harm to a vast number of individuals globally. Despite the high prevalence of neuropathic pain following SCI, the precise underlying mechanism remains incompletely understood. Microglia are a type of innate immune cell that are present in the central nervous system (CNS). They have been observed to have a significant impact on neuropathic pain following SCI. This article presents a comprehensive overview of recent advances in understanding the role of microglia in the development of neuropathic pain following SCI. Specifically, the article delves into the detrimental and protective effects of microglia on neuropathic pain following SCI, as well as the mechanisms underlying their interconversion. Furthermore, the article provides a thorough overview of potential avenues for future research in this area.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the effect of thrombocytopenia on the prognosis of patients with septic shock and its mechanism in leading to death. METHODS A retrospective case-control study was conducted. Patients with septic shock admitted to emergency intensive care unit (EICU) and intensive care unit (ICU) in Peking University People's Hospital from April 1, 2015 to January 31, 2023 were enrolled. Patients were divided into the thrombocytopenia group and the non-thrombocytopenia group, according to whether the minimum platelet count was less than 100×109/L within 24 hours after admission to ICU. The outcome index was the mortality during ICU stay. The baseline data, hospitalization information and laboratory test results of the two groups were compared, and the risk factors of in-hospital death were analyzed by Logistic regression, and the mediation effect was performed by Bootstrap method. RESULTS A total of 301 patients with septic shock were enrolled, of which 172 (57.1%) had thrombocytopenia and 129 (42.9%) did not. There were significant differences between the two groups in age, mortality, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), continuous renal replacement therapy, and level of creatinine, urea nitrogen, total bilirubin, white blood cell count, lymphocyte count, prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT). Univariate Logistic regression analysis showed thrombocytopenia [odds ratio (OR) = 4.478], continuous renal replacement therapy (OR = 4.601), DIC (OR = 6.248), serum creatinine (OR = 1.005), urea nitrogen (OR = 1.126), total bilirubin (OR = 1.006) and PT (OR = 1.126) were risk factors of death during hospitalization in patients with septic shock (all P < 0.05). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that thrombocytopenia [OR = 3.338, 95% confidence interval (95%CI) was 1.910-5.834, P = 0.000], continuous renal replacement therapy (OR = 3.175, 95%CI was 1.576-6.395, P = 0.001) and PT (OR = 1.077, 95%CI was 1.011-1.147, P = 0.021) were independent risk factors for in-hospital mortality in patients with septic shock. Mediation analysis showed that 51% of the deaths due to thrombocytopenia in patients with septic shock were due to coagulopathy. CONCLUSIONS Thrombocytopenia is a powerful predictor of death in septic shock patients, and half of all thrombocytopenia-related deaths may be due to abnormal coagulation function.

Abstract
In previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS), genetic loci associated with obesity and impaired fat distribution (FD) have been identified. In the present study, we elucidated the role of the PEMT gene, including the waist-hip-ratio-associated single nucleotide polymorphism rs4646404, and its influence on obesity-related metabolic traits. DNA from 2926 metabolically well-characterized subjects was used for genotyping. PEMT expression was analyzed in paired visceral (vis) and subcutaneous (sc) adipose tissue (AT) from a subset of 574 individuals. Additionally, PEMT expression was examined in vis, sc AT and liver tissue in a separate cohort of 64 patients with morbid obesity and liver disease. An in vitro Pemt knockdown was conducted in murine epididymal and inguinal adipocytes. Our findings highlight tissue-specific variations in PEMT mRNA expression across the three studied tissues. Specifically, vis PEMT mRNA levels correlated significantly with T2D and were implicated in the progression of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), in contrast to liver tissue, where no significant associations were found. Moreover, sc PEMT expression showed significant correlations with several anthropometric- and metabolic-related parameters. The rs4646404 was associated with vis AT PEMT expression and also with diabetes-related traits. Our in vitro experiments supported the influence of PEMT on adipogenesis, emphasizing its role in AT biology. In summary, our data suggest that PEMT plays a role in regulating FD and has implications in metabolic diseases.

Abstract
The polarization of Λ and Λ[over ¯] hyperons along the beam direction has been measured relative to the second and third harmonic event planes in isobar Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. This is the first experimental evidence of the hyperon polarization by the triangular flow originating from the initial density fluctuations. The amplitudes of the sine modulation for the second and third harmonic results are comparable in magnitude, increase from central to peripheral collisions, and show a mild p_{T} dependence. The azimuthal angle dependence of the polarization follows the vorticity pattern expected due to elliptic and triangular anisotropic flow, and qualitatively disagrees with most hydrodynamic model calculations based on thermal vorticity and shear induced contributions. The model results based on one of existing implementations of the shear contribution lead to a correct azimuthal angle dependence, but predict centrality and p_{T} dependence that still disagree with experimental measurements. Thus, our results provide stringent constraints on the thermal vorticity and shear-induced contributions to hyperon polarization. Comparison to previous measurements at RHIC and the LHC for the second-order harmonic results shows little dependence on the collision system size and collision energy.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) has become one of the leading causes of health problems in the elderly, and studying its causes and treatments remains a serious challenge for researchers worldwide. The two main pathological features of Alzheimer's disease are the extracellular deposition of β-amyloid (Aβ) to form senile plaques and the intracellular aggregation of hyperphosphorylated Tau protein to form neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). Researchers have proposed several hypotheses to elucidate the pathogenesis of AD, but due to the complexity of the pathophysiologic factors involved in the development of AD, no effective drugs have been found to stop the progression of the disease. Currently, the mainstay drugs used to treat AD can only alleviate the patient's symptoms and do not have a therapeutic effect. As researchers explore interactions among diseases, much evidence suggests that there is a close link between periodontitis and AD, and that periodontal pathogenic bacteria can exacerbate Aβ deposition and Tau protein hyperphosphorylation through neuroinflammatory mechanisms, thereby advancing the pathogenesis of AD. This article reviews recent advances in the pathogenesis of AD, available therapeutic agents, the relevance of periodontitis to AD, and mechanisms of action.

Abstract
Many powerful computational methods based on graph neural networks (GNNs) have been proposed to predict drug-protein interactions (DPIs). It can effectively reduce laboratory workload and the cost of drug discovery and drug repurposing. However, many clinical functions of drugs and proteins are unknown due to their unobserved indications. Therefore, it is difficult to establish a reliable drug-protein heterogeneous network that can describe the relationships between drugs and proteins based on the available information. To solve this problem, we propose a DPI prediction method that can self-adaptively adjust the topological structure of the heterogeneous networks, and name it SATS. SATS establishes a representation learning module based on graph attention network to carry out the drug-protein heterogeneous network. It can self-adaptively learn the relationships among the nodes based on their attributes and adjust the topological structure of the network according to the training loss of the model. Finally, SATS predicts the interaction propensity between drugs and proteins based on their embeddings. The experimental results show that SATS can effectively improve the topological structure of the network. The performance of SATS outperforms several state-of-the-art DPI prediction methods under various evaluation metrics. These prove that SATS is useful to deal with incomplete data and unreliable networks. The case studies on the top section of the prediction results further demonstrate that SATS is powerful for discovering novel DPIs.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by cartilage degradation and inflammation. The molecular mechanisms underlying OA progression remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated the role of STEAP3 (Six Transmembrane Epithelial Antigen of the Prostate 3) in the development of OA. Our results demonstrated that STEAP3 was upregulated in OA cartilage tissues and contributes to the progression of the disease. To elucidate the mechanism, we employed transcriptomic and interaction proteomics analysis, and identified dysregulated genes and pathways associated with STEAP3 overexpression. Specifically, we found that STEAP3 interacted with Rab7A, a protein involved in intracellular trafficking and autophagy, and suppressed its activity. In addition, STEAP3 interacted with activated C kinase 1 (RACK1) and enhanced its activity. Furthermore, our data indicated that the suppression of Rab7A activity by STEAP3 promoted the activation of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) and the promoting effects of RACK1 by STEAP3, both of which in turn activated the MAPK and JAK/STAT signaling pathways. In conclusion, our findings highlighted the role of STEAP3 in promoting OA progression. By inhibiting Rab7A activity and promoting RACK1 activity, STEAP3 enhanced inflammation through the activation of RTKs and subsequent activation of the MAPK and JAK/STAT signaling pathways. Targeting STEAP3 may provide a potential therapeutic strategy for the treatment of OA by modulating these interconnected pathways.

Abstract
To investigate the clinical and radiographic results of anterior tibial tendon (ATT) transfer combined with supramalleolar osteotomy in stage 3b of varus ankle osteoarthritis. Totally 13 patients with stage 3b of varus ankle osteoarthritis who received ATT transfer combined with supramalleolar osteotomy in Beijing Tongren Hospital from January 2018 to May 2021 were recruited. There were 6 males and 7 females with a mean age of (57.8±9.3) years. The overall evaluations included the preoperatively and postoperatively radiographic alignments, visual analog scale (VAS) score, and the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) clinical ankle-hindfoot scale. The mean follow-up period was (33.5±13.4) months. The tibial articular surface (TAS), talar tilt (TT), and foot and ankle offset (FAO) changed from 83.3°±2.4° to 92.8°±1.7°, 12.3°±4.5° to 7.0°±4.7°, and -7.4%±2.8% to -0.7%±2.2% after the operation, respectively (all P<0.001). The AOFAS and VAS score improved significantly at the final follow-up when compared with those before the operation (both P<0.001). It indicated that ATT transfer after supramalleolar osteotomy can achieve good clinical and radiographic results in the treatment of varus ankle arthritis in Takakura stage 3b.

Abstract
The Holmium (Ho:YAG) laser is presently the most extensively employed in laser lithotripsy for the management of kidney stones. Despite its adoption as the gold standard for laser lithotripsy, Ho:YAG laser lithotripsy poses three significant challenges, namely thermal effect, insufficient stone fragmentation, and stone displacement, which have garnered increased attention from urologic surgeons. Nowadays, the femtosecond laser is regarded as a potential alternative to the Ho:YAG laser due to its capacity to ablate diverse materials with minimal thermal effect. In our ex vivo investigation, we assessed the dimensions of ablation pits, the efficacy of ablation, the degree of stone fragmentation, the alterations in water temperature surrounding stones, and the degree of tissue damage associated with Femtosecond laser lithotripsy utilizing adjustable power settings (1-50 W). Our findings indicate that the ablation pits generated by the Femtosecond laser exhibited uniform geometries, and the effectiveness of ablation and fragmentation for Femtosecond laser lithotripsy were significantly and positively correlated with laser power. When the laser power remained constant, the Femtosecond laser with higher pulse energy demonstrated superior efficiency in stone ablation, but inferior performance in stone fragmentation. Conversely, the Femtosecond laser with higher pulse frequency exhibited the opposite behavior. Furthermore, the thermal effect increased proportionally with laser power, leading to a tentative recommendation of 10W laser power for future investigations. Our in vitro findings suggest that the Femtosecond laser holds promise as a safe and effective alternative to holmium lasers.

Abstract
A. hydrophila (Aeromonas hydrophila) is one of the most hazardous pathogenic microorganisms threatening the aquaculture industry and exhibits zoonotic-like characteristics. This study was designed to investigate the differential gene expression and pathway enrichment in the spleen of koi carp (Cyprinus carpio koi) upon A. hydrophila infection. The Illumina NovaSeq 6000 sequencing platform was used to identify 252 DEGs (differentially expressed genes), including 112 upregulated genes and 140 downregulated genes, in the spleens of koi carp challenged with A. hydrophila compared to those in the spleens of koi carp treated with PBS (phosphate-buffered saline). DEGs were shown to be involved in 133 pathways by KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) enrichment analysis. Numerous immunological disease-related pathways, such as the immune defense network for IgA production, Staphylococcus aureus infection, and antigen processing and presentation, were enriched in the DEGs. In addition, the expression levels of 10 randomly screened DEGs, including the inflammatory factor nlrp3 (NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3), cytokine il-8 (interleukin-8), c2 (complement c2), c3 (complement c3), and the lipid mediator cox1 (cyclooxygenase-1), were compared by qPCR. The results showed that six genes, including il-8, cox1, and nlrp3, were upregulated according to both RNA-seq and qPCR validation, while four, including c2 and c3, showed downregulated expression. This result verified a strong correlation between the RNA-seq and qPCR datasets at the expression level. Moreover, this study provided splenic transcriptome data for koi carp during A. hydrophila infection and provided theoretical support for future drug development.

Abstract
Type A γ-aminobutyric acid receptors (GABAARs) are the principal inhibitory receptors in the brain and the target of a wide range of clinical agents, including anaesthetics, sedatives, hypnotics and antidepressants1-3. However, our understanding of GABAAR pharmacology has been hindered by the vast number of pentameric assemblies that can be derived from 19 different subunits4 and the lack of structural knowledge of clinically relevant receptors. Here, we isolate native murine GABAAR assemblies containing the widely expressed α1 subunit and elucidate their structures in complex with drugs used to treat insomnia (zolpidem (ZOL) and flurazepam) and postpartum depression (the neurosteroid allopregnanolone (APG)). Using cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) analysis and single-molecule photobleaching experiments, we uncover three major structural populations in the brain: the canonical α1β2γ2 receptor containing two α1 subunits, and two assemblies containing one α1 and either an α2 or α3 subunit, in which the single α1-containing receptors feature a more compact arrangement between the transmembrane and extracellular domains. Interestingly, APG is bound at the transmembrane α/β subunit interface, even when not added to the sample, revealing an important role for endogenous neurosteroids in modulating native GABAARs. Together with structurally engaged lipids, neurosteroids produce global conformational changes throughout the receptor that modify the ion channel pore and the binding sites for GABA and insomnia medications. Our data reveal the major α1-containing GABAAR assemblies, bound with endogenous neurosteroid, thus defining a structural landscape from which subtype-specific drugs can be developed.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) To compare dose distributions created by using two Inverse Planning Simulated Annealing (IPSA) and Hybrid Inverse Planning Optimization (HIPO) in three-dimensional (with CT image guidance) brachytherapy planning for cervical cancer. MATERIALS/METHODS Brachytherapy plans for thirty patients with cervical cancer were created using the IPSA and HIPO algorithms (The IPSA algorithm is calculated based on the anatomical structure, and the simulated annealing algorithm is used to optimize the residence time, and the HIPO algorithm is the optimization and replacement for the IPSA). To obtain a HIPO plan, a manually optimized post-loading treatment plan was applied to these 30 patients, and then the treatment plan was reoptimized using the HIPO algorithm based on the original image information. Individual patients will consider interpolation therapy according to the needs of their condition. The types of plans were compared based on a variety of dose volume parameters, including the mean dose covering 90% of high-risk clinical target volume (D90 for HR-CTV), the mean dose to 2 cm3 volume (D2cc) for bladder, rectum, intestine and sigmoid, and average treatment time were compared and analyzed. RESULTS Compared with the two groups of plans, mean value of HR-CTV D90 for the HIPO plans was (585 cGy), which was significantly higher than that for the IPSA plans (567 cGy. This difference is statistically significant (P<0.05). The HIPO plans had mean D2cc 422±47 cGy for bladder, 403±38 cGy for rectum, which were lower than those from the SA plans, i.e., 446±42 cGy for bladder and 427±31 cGy for rectum; These differences were statistically significant (t = 5.125, 4.729, P <0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the sigmoid D2cc doses between the two algorithms. The treatment times for delivering the two types of plans were not significant different. CONCLUSION Depending on patient's condition, whether conventional brachytherapy therapy or interpolation therapy is used, the use of the HIPO algorithm to design the treatment regimen without additional treatment time can provide a higher target dose than the manually optimized brachytherapy regimen. Meanwhile, the bladder and rectum doses can be reduced to a certain extent under the premise of ensuring that the target dose met the treatment requirements. There is some increasement for the intestine dose with HIPO planning group, but the dose limits required by the guidelines are still met clinical requirement.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the case fatality rate of HIV/AIDS cases and influencing factors in Jingzhou. Methods: The data were retrieved from HIV/AIDS Comprehensive Response Information System and the cases diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in Jingzhou during 1996-2021 and aged 15 years or older were selected for the study. The death curve was drawn with Kaplan-Meier method, and Cox proportional-hazards model was used to identify influencing factors for death. Results: A total of 3 304 HIV/AIDS cases were followed up for 16 091.5 person-years, and 893 cases died, with a case fatality rate of 5.5/100 person-years. The cumulative case fatality rates of 1, 5 and 10 years were 15.4%, 25.0% and 34.6% respectively, the cumulative case fatality rates of 1, 5 and 10 years were 6.9%, 14.4% and 23.7% in the cases with access to antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 68.0%, 90.1% and 98.7% in the cases without access to ART. The results of Cox proportional hazards regression model showed that the risk for death was higher in those without access to ART than in those with access to ART (aHR=9.85, 95%CI: 8.19-11.85). The risk factors for death in those with access to ART included being men (aHR=1.64, 95%CI: 1.29-2.08), age ≥60 years old at diagnosis (aHR=3.52, 95%CI: 2.38-5.20), being infected by injecting drug use/others (aHR=2.38, 95%CI:1.30-4.34), being detected by medical institution (aHR=1.53, 95%CI: 1.11-2.11), CD4+T lymphocytes(CD4) counts <50 cells/μl (aHR=2.58, 95%CI: 1.87-3.58). The protective factor for death was high education level (high school and technical secondary school: aHR=0.64,95%CI:0.46-0.90; college and above: aHR=0.42, 95%CI: 0.24-0.73). The risk factors for HIV/AIDS death in those without access to ART included older age at diagnosis (30-44 years old: aHR=2.32, 95%CI: 1.40-3.84; 45-59 years old:aHR=2.61, 95%CI: 1.59-4.27; ≥60 years old: aHR=3.31, 95%CI: 2.01-5.47), lower CD4 counts (<50 cells/μl: aHR=10.47, 95%CI: 6.47-16.56; 50-199 cells/μl: aHR=2.31, 95%CI: 1.08-4.94; 200-349 cells/μl: aHR=2.35, 95%CI: 1.46-3.79). Conclusions: The case fatality rate of HIV/AIDS was relatively high in Jingzhou from 1996 to 2021, the first CD4 counts, ART and age at diagnosis were the major factors affecting HIV/AIDS death, "Expanding testing" and "prompt treatment upon diagnosis" should be continued and enhanced to improve the efficacy of ART and HIV/AIDS case survival.

Abstract
Asthma is a complex disease, often with evident genetic predisposition; for example, the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs7130588 was significantly associated with asthma by genome-wide association study (GWAS). Analysis of 1000 Genomes Project data suggests that there is another SNP, rs6592645, in complete linkage disequilibrium with rs7130588 and should present the same signal in GWAS. However, the causal SNP and the mechanism for the association between rs7130588 and asthma remain to be elucidated. In the presents study, results from dual-luciferase assays indicated that the A/G alleles of rs7130588 failed to present significantly different reporter gene expression. By contrast, A allele of rs6592645 presented a significant increase in relative luciferase activity than G allele, thus suggesting that rs6592645 may be a causal SNP. Using chromosome conformation capture, the enhancer region containing rs6592645 was observed to interact with promoter region of leucine-rich repeat-containing 32 (LRRC32). Gene expression quantification suggested that LRRC32 expression is significantly increased in lung tissue of patients with asthma and is dependent on the genotype of this locus, thus verifying that LRRC32 may be involved in asthma onset and that rs6592645 can regulate LRRC32 expression. Through chromatin immunoprecipitation, transcription factor 3 (TCF3) was identified to bind to rs6592645 surrounding region and the interaction between TCF3 and rs6592645 surrounding region was investigated. Results from the present study may improve our understanding of the mechanism by which the genetic variation in this locus might influence asthma susceptibility.
