An ionic liquid functionalized graphene adsorbent with multiple adsorption mechanisms for pipette-tip solid-phase extraction of auxins in soybean sprouts

Ionic liquid-functionalized covalent organic frameworks on the surface of silica for online solid-phase extraction

A covalent organic framework (COF) was gown on porous silica with 1,3,5-tri(4-aminophenyl)benzene and 2,5-divinyl-1,4-phenyldiformaldehyde as monomers, and two ionic liquids were grafted to COF by a click reaction. The materials before and after the modification of ionic liquids were separately packed into solid-phase extraction columns (10 × 4.6 mm, i.d.), which were coupled with liquid chromatography to construct online analysis systems. The extraction mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, bisphenols, diphenylalkanes and benzoic acids were investigated on these materials. There were π-π, hydrogen-bond and electrostatic interactions on ionic liquid-functionalized sorbents. After the comparison among these materials, the best sorbent was used, and the analytical method was established and successfully applied to the detection of some estrogens from actual samples. For the analytical method, the detection limit was as low as 0.005 μg L-1, linear range was as wide as 0.017-10.0 μg L-1, and enrichment ratio was as high as 3635. The recoveries in actual samples were 70 %-129 %.

Advances and Applications of Hybrid Graphene-Based Materials as Sorbents for Solid Phase Microextraction Techniques

The advancement of traditional sample preparation techniques has brought about miniaturization systems designed to scale down conventional methods and advocate for environmentally friendly analytical approaches. Although often referred to as green analytical strategies, the effectiveness of these methods is intricately linked to the properties of the sorbent utilized. Moreover, to fully embrace implementing these methods, it is crucial to innovate and develop new sorbent or solid phases that enhance the adaptability of miniaturized techniques across various matrices and analytes. Graphene-based materials exhibit remarkable versatility and modification potential, making them ideal sorbents for miniaturized strategies due to their high surface area and functional groups. Their notable adsorption capability and alignment with green synthesis approaches, such as bio-based graphene materials, enable the use of less sorbent and the creation of biodegradable materials, enhancing their eco-friendly aspects towards green analytical practices. Therefore, this study provides an overview of different types of hybrid graphene-based materials as well as their applications in crucial miniaturized techniques, focusing on offline methodologies such as stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS), pipette-tip solid-phase extraction (PT-SPE), disposable pipette extraction (DPX), dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction (d-µ-SPE), and magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE).

Miniaturized centrifugation accelerated pipette-tip matrix solid-phase dispersion based on poly(deep eutectic solvents) surface imprinted graphene oxide composite adsorbent for rapid extraction of anti-adipogenesis markers from Solidago decurrens Lour

Overweight and obesity are the causes of many diseases and have become global "epidemics". Research on natural active components with anti-adipogenesis effects in plants has aroused the interest of researchers. One of the most critical problems is establishing sample preparation and analytical techniques for quickly and selectively extracting and determining the active anti-adipogenesis components in complex plant matrices for developing new anti-adipogenic drugs. In this study, a new poly(deep eutectic solvents) surface imprinted graphene oxide composite (PDESs-MIP/GO) with high selectivity for phenolic acids was prepared using deep eutectic solvents as monomers and crosslinkers. A miniaturized centrifugation-accelerated pipette-tip matrix solid-phase dispersion method (CPT-MSPD) with PDESs-MIP/GO as adsorbent, coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography, was further developed for the rapid determination of anti-adipogenesis markers in Solidago decurrens Lour. (SDL). The established method was successfully used to determination anti-adipogenesis markers in SDL from different regions, with the advantages of accuracy (recoveries: 94.4 - 115.9 %, RSDs ≤ 9.8 %), speed (CPT-MSPD time: 11 min), selectivity (imprinting factor: ∼2.0), and economy (2 mg of adsorbent and 1 mL of solvents), which is in line with the current advanced principle of "3S+2A" in analytical chemistry.

A Carboxyl Group-Functionalized Ionic Liquid Hybrid Adsorbent for Solid-Phase Extraction and Determination of Trace Diclofenac Sodium in Milk Samples

A simple and efficient sample pretreatment technology is very important for the accurate determination of trace drug residues in foods to ensure food safety. Herein, we report a new carboxyl group-functionalized ionic liquid hybrid solid- phase adsorbent (PS-IL-COOH) for the highly efficient extraction and quantitative determination of diclofenac sodium (DS) residue in milk samples. It was found that the adsorption efficiency of PS-IL-COOH for the ppb level of DS was greater than 93.0%, the adsorption capacity was 934.1 mg/g, and the enrichment factor was 620.0, which surpass most of the previously reported values for DS adsorbents. The high concentration of salts did not interfere with the adsorption of DS. Importantly, the recovery of DS was above 90% after 16 adsorption--regeneration cycles. The synergistic effect of the multiple interactions was found to be the main factor for the high efficiency of DS adsorption. The proposed method was applied to the extraction and detection of DS in milk samples, with the relative recovery ranging from 88.2 to 103.0%.

Dual-template hydrophilic imprinted resin as an adsorbent for highly selective simultaneous extraction and determination of multiple trace plant growth regulators in red wine samples

In recent years, numerous plant growth regulators have been found in foods and have a toxicity to human health, so its simultaneous multiple monitoring is urgently. For the first time, a rapid, accurate, and high-selective method was established to extract and determine multiple plant growth regulators simultaneously in red wines using a new dual-template hydrophilic molecularly imprinted resin (DHMIR) as an adsorbent of pipette tip solid-phase extraction coupled with HPLC. The as-prepared DHMIR combined the advantages of the hydrophilicity of hydrophilic resin and multi-imprinted recognition of dual-template molecular imprinting, overcoming the poor imprinted recognition ability of traditional imprinting materials in water and low extraction efficiency to multiple targets. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method exhibited high sensitivity (2.29-3.94 ng mL^-1) and recoveries (80.9-109.0 %) using only 15 mg DHMIR. This study provides an effective strategy for rapid, accurate, low-cost, and high-selective determination of the multiple analytes in food samples.

Electrospun UiO-66-F4/polyacrylonitrile nanofibers for efficient extraction of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances in environmental media

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a family of emerging contaminants which are widely present in environment. In this work, novel UiO-66-F₄/polyacrylonitrile (UiO-66-F₄/PAN) hybrid nanofibers were firstly prepared via blend electrospinning or in-situ growth method for the pipette-tip solid phase extraction of PFASs. Characterizations demonstrate the as-synthesized UiO-66-F₄/PAN nanofibers have good chemical and thermal stability, possess large surface area (248 m²/g) and mesoporous framework structure. Several extraction factors including the amount of adsorbent, pH and ionic strength of sample solution, extraction time and eluent were investigated and the optimum conditions are 20 mg of the selected sorbent, adjusting to pH 5 and adding 4% w/v NaCl to sample solution, extraction for 12 min (3 min × 4). The good adsorption affinity of UiO-66-F₄/PAN for PFASs can be attributed to the extensive adsorption sites and multiple interactions including hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bonding and F-F interaction. Low limit of detection (0.008-0.076 µg/L), limit of quantification (0.010-0.163 µg/L) and recoveries (70.84-113.57%) for 9 PFASs with relative standard deviations < 15% were achieved. When applied in the analysis of target PFASs in lake water, tap water, beverage, and shrimp muscle samples, this method could achieve robust and accurate results with sufficient sensitivity for nine PFASs.

Rapid determination of antiviral drugs in yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) using graphene/silica nanospheres (G/KCC-1) based pipette tip solid-phase extraction with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) is commonly contaminated by protease inhibitors because of the illegal use of antiviral drugs in aquaculture, so the determination of antiviral drugs is essential in food safety supervision. In this study, a novel sorbent, graphene and silica nanospheres composite (G/KCC-1), was synthesized for pipette-tip-based solid-phase extraction (PT-SPE) and purification of ritonavir, saquinavir, and indinavir in yellow catfish, followed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) analysis. The wrinkly structure of G/KCC-1 with center-radial nanowrinkles enlarged the surface area and increased the capacity of absorbing the target analyte. With the proposed G/KCC-1 based PT-SPE UPLC-MS/MS method, the pH of sample solution, aspirating/dispensing cycles for extraction and elution were optimized to be 4.0, 25, and 10 respectively, and the eluting solvent was methanol/ammonia (95:5, v/v) with 0.02 M sodium chloride. This new method was further validated to be linear (correlation coefficient R², 0.9993-0.9996), sensitive (limit of detection, LOD ≤ 0.8 ng mL^-1), accurate (89.3-114.2%), and precise (relative standard deviation, RSD ≤ 6.23%). These results indicated that the proposed method is qualified in bioanalytical method validation and meets the requirements for detecting illegally used antiviral drugs in yellow catfish. The demonstrated G/KCC-1 based PT-SPE UPLC-MS/MS method is a potential analytical method in food and drug administration.

Sustainable materials in the removal of pesticides from contaminated water: Perspective on macro to nanoscale cellulose

Recently, over utilization of pesticides in agrarian and non- agrarian sectors has resulted in a significant increment in the deposition of their remnants in different segments of the environmental media. The presence of pesticides and transportation of their different metabolites in rivers, ponds, lakes, soils, air, groundwater sources and drinkable water sources has demonstrated a high threat to human wellbeing and the climate. Thus, the removal of pesticides and their metabolites from contaminated water is imperative to lessen the ill effects of pesticides on human beings. In the present article, we have appraised recent advances in pesticides removal utilizing low cost pristine and functionalized cellulose biomass-based derivatives. One of the key focus has been on better understand the destiny of pesticides in the environment as well as their behaviour in the water. In addition, the impact of magnetite cellulose nanocomposites, cellulose derived photo nano-catalyst, cellulose/clay nano composites, CdS/cellulose nanocomposites and activated carbons/biochar on percent removal of pesticides have also been a part of the current review. The impact of different parameters such as adsorbent dosage, pH, time of contact and initials pesticide concentration on adsorption capacity and adsorption kinetics followed during absorption by different cellulosic bio-adsorbents has also been given. The cellulosic biomass is highly efficient in the removal of pesticides and their efficiency further increases upon functionalization or their conversion into activated carbons forms. Nano particles loaded cellulosic materials have in general found to be less efficient than raw, functionalized cellulosic materials and activated carbons. Further, among different nano particles loaded with cellulose-based materials, cellulose/MnO₂ photonanocatalyst were noticed to be more effective. So considerable efforts should be given to determine the finest practices that relate to the dissipation of different pesticides from the water.

Highly sensitive detection of plant growth regulators by using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy combined with metamaterials

The rapid and sensitive detection of plant-growth-regulator (PGR) residue is essential for ensuring food safety for consumers. However, there are many disadvantages in current approaches to detecting PGR residue. In this paper, we demonstrate a highly sensitive PGR detection method by using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy combined with metamaterials. We propose a double formant metamaterial resonator based on a split-ring structure with titanium-gold nanostructure. The metamaterial resonator is a split-ring structure composed of a titanium-gold nanostructure based on polyimide film as the substrate. Also, terahertz spectral response and electric field distribution of metamaterials under different analyte thickness and refractive index were investigated. The simulation results showed that the theoretical sensitivity of resonance peak 1 and peak 2 of the refractive index sensor based on our designed metamaterial resonator approaches 780 and 720 gigahertz per refractive index unit (GHz/RIU), respectively. In experiments, a rapid solution analysis platform based on the double formant metamaterial resonator was set up and PGR residues in aqueous solution were directly and rapidly detected through terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The results showed that metamaterials can successfully detect butylhydrazine and N-N diglycine at a concentration as low as 0.05 mg/L. This study paves a new way for sensitive, rapid, low-cost detection of PGRs. It also means that the double formant metamaterial resonator has significant potential for other applications in terahertz sensing.

Recent advances in micro- and nanomaterial-based adsorbents for pipette-tip solid-phase extraction

There are a lot of review papers of sample pretreatment, but the comprehensive review on pipette-tip solid-phase extraction (PT-SPE) is lacking. This review (133 references) is mainly devoted to the development of different types of micro- and nanosorbent-based PT-SPE, including silica materials, carbon materials, organic polymers, molecularly imprinted polymers, and metal-organic frameworks. Each section mainly introduces and discusses the preparation methods, advantages and limitations of adsorbents, and their applications to environmental, biological, and food samples. This review also demonstrates the advantages of PT-SPE like convenience, speed, less organic solvent, and low cost. Finally, the future application and development trend of PT-SPE are prospected.

[Research progress in application of immobilized ionic liquid materials to separation by solid-phase extraction]

Ionic liquids are low-temperature molten salts with almost no vapor pressure, and they are composed of organic cations and inorganic anions. Ionic liquids are characterized by the properties of good chemical stability, high solubility, designable structure, high conductivity and so on. The physicochemical properties of an ionic liquid depend on the nature and size of the cation and anion, which confer unique characteristics; hence, these reagents are also termed "designed extractants." As a new class of green solvents, ionic liquids are potential replacements to traditional volatile organic solvents used for extraction; for this reason, ionic liquids have attracted the attention of scientists. Research on the methods of preparation and applications of ionic liquids is being diversified, and they are extensively used in catalytic chemistry, photoelectron chemistry, materials chemistry, analytical chemistry, etc. By functional guiding design, the structures of ionic liquids, especially the imidazole ring cations, can be easily grafted with active groups such as hydroxyl, amino, carboxyl, and cyano groups, so that interactions between the ionic liquids and target molecules can be promoted via the formation of π-π bonds, hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds, and van der Waals forces. In addition, ionic liquids can be readily immobilized on solid carriers by physical or chemical means in order to obtain a new solid material with ionic liquids embedded internally or decorated on the surface. Furthermore, ionic liquids could be converted into ionic liquid-immobilized composite materials by impregnation, grafting, etc. The resulting composites not only suffer minimal loss of ionic liquids but also retain the typical characteristics of the ionic liquids and solid materials, thus showing improved mass transfer performance and better adsorption performance. Immobilized materials are characterized by high enrichment efficiency, high adsorption capacity, good stability, and strong extraction selectivity, as well as the presence of numerous recognition sites and high utilization rate of ionic liquids. In recent years, they have been widely used as solid-phase extraction adsorption materials for the separation of small organic molecules. This review introduces common immobilization methods and the characteristics of ionic liquid-immobilized materials, as well as their application in solid-phase extraction. In this paper, methods for the immobilization of ionic liquids with solid carriers such as silica gel, molecular sieves, molecularly imprinted polymers, graphene oxide, and magnetic nanomaterials are summarized, and the application of ionic liquid-immobilized materials in solid-phase extraction is reviewed. The target substances include alkaloids, flavonoids, polyphenols, and other natural active components as well as common drug molecules, organic pesticides, and other organic small molecular compounds. The properties, applications, and separation mechanisms of ionic liquids immobilized with various carriers are systematically introduced. Literature survey shows that the distribution of the binding active sites of ionic liquid-immobilized materials to the target molecules is more uniform, which increases the adsorption capacity of the materials. The adsorption efficiency of ionic liquid-immobilized materials is related to the type of ionic liquid, amount of adsorption material, concentration of the sample solution, adsorption temperature, solution pH, flow rate of the eluent, and type and amount of the eluting solvent. The existing disadvantages of ionic liquids, such as simple structures, insufficient basic theoretical research, and unsatisfactory extraction degree in complex matrixes would also be discussed. The corresponding solutions would be presented with the aim of providing guidance for the application of ionic liquid-immobilized materials in the separation and analysis of targets in complex matrices, thus paving the way for a new direction in the field of extraction and separation.

A study of plant growth regulators detection based on terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and density functional theory

Terahertz technology is receiving increasing attention for its use as an efficient non-destructive, non-contact and label-free optical method for qualitative and quantitative detection. The aim of this study was to develop a chemical analysis methodology based on terahertz time-domain spectra that could be used to detect plant growth regulators, such as glyphosine, naphthaleneacetic acid, daminozide and gibberellic acid. The THz fingerprint spectra of these four PGRs were located in the 0.3–1.8 THz, with the peaks of glyphosine at 0.32, 0.49, 0.74, 0.87, 0.96, and 1.49 THz; daminozide at 0.33, 0.39, 0.55, 0.67, and 1.17 THz; gibberellic acid at 0.46, 0.58, 0.92, and 1.38 THz and naphthaleneacetic acid at 0.43, 0.57, 0.73, and 0.90 THz. The results showed that these four plant growth regulators exhibited numerous distinct spectral features in frequency-dependent absorption spectra, which demonstrated the qualitative capacity of terahertz time-domain. The origin of the observed terahertz absorption peaks of these four plant growth regulators was determined through density functional theory calculations and analysis of absorption spectra. Discriminant analysis method was used to evaluate the classification trends of the four plant growth regulators based on their THz absorbance spectra. Generally, this study provides a reference for the rapid detection of plant growth regulators in fruits and vegetables by using terahertz spectroscopy technology.

Covalent organic framework Schiff base network-1-based pipette tip solid phase extraction of sulfonamides from milk and honey

In this work, a covalent organic framework Schiff base network-1 (SNW-1), was synthesized based on the Schiff base reaction between terephthalaldehyde and melamine and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm analyses. The prepared SNW-1 was employed as pipette tip solid phase extraction adsorbent for the extraction of sulfonamides (SAs) prior to high performance liquid chromatography analysis. The parameters affecting the extraction efficiency, including the salt concentration, sample pH, amount of adsorbent, and types and volume of eluent were investigated in detail. Good linearities were obtained between the peak area and SAs concentration ranging from 5 to 500 ng mL^-1 with correlation coefficients (R²) higher than 0.9998. The limits of detection and RSDs were lower than 0.25 ng mL^-1 and 1.9 %, respectively. The developed method was further applied for the determination of SAs in milk and honey samples with recoveries in the range of 85.8 % - 118.0 % and RSDs less than 9.5 %. The results demonstrate that the SNW-1 shows great potential for the enrichment of trace SAs in complex matrices.

A molecularly imprinted polymer based monolith pipette tip for solid-phase extraction of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in an aqueous sample

This paper presents a simple approach for fabrication of a pipette tip solid-phase extraction (PT-SPE) device, which possesses a monolith structure with low back pressure and has high selectivity to 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Pipette tips were packed with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as a selective adsorbent and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) as a co-sintering agent, and then heated to form a monolith extraction device. The key factors including the particle size and amount of packing material, and the type and volume of elution solvent, which influence PT-SPE device performance were optimized. A packing material of 40 mg/0.20 mL in a ratio of 4/6 (MIPs/HDPE) and treatment temperature of 150 °C was selected. By the determination with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-SPD), the extraction device was found to have a good extraction recovery for a 2,4-D lake water sample at a low concentration (0.006 mg L-1) with an enrichment factor about 50. The proposed method provided a simple approach for the fabrication of a PT-SPE monolith device with reduced back pressure and wall effect, which are very important for improving the extraction efficiency. And the device will have promising application in the extraction of a variety of analytes in complex samples.

The Current Role of Graphene-Based Nanomaterials in the Sample Preparation Arena

Since its discovery in 2004 by Novoselov et al., graphene has attracted increasing attention in the scientific community due to its excellent physical and chemical properties, such as thermal/mechanical resistance, electronic stability, high Young's modulus, and fast mobility of charged atoms. In addition, other remarkable characteristics support its use in analytical chemistry, especially as sorbent. For these reasons, graphene-based materials (GBMs) have been used as a promising material in sample preparation. Graphene and graphene oxide, owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties as a large surface area, good mechanical strength, thermal stability, and delocalized π-electrons, are ideal sorbents, especially for molecules containing aromatic rings. They have been used in several sample preparation techniques such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), as well as in miniaturized modes as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) in their different configurations. However, the reduced size and weight of graphene sheets can limit their use since they commonly aggregate to each other, causing clogging in high-pressure extractive devices. One way to overcome it and other drawbacks consists of covalently attaching the graphene sheets to support materials (e.g., silica, polymers, and magnetically modified supports). Also, graphene-based materials can be further chemically modified to favor some interactions with specific analytes, resulting in more efficient hybrid sorbents with higher selectivity for specific chemical classes. As a result of this wide variety of graphene-based sorbents, several studies have shown the current potential of applying GBMs in different fields such as food, biological, pharmaceutical, and environmental applications. Within such a context, this review will focus on the last five years of achievements in graphene-based materials for sample preparation techniques highlighting their synthesis, chemical structure, and potential application for the extraction of target analytes in different complex matrices.

Improved Solid-Phase Extraction for Simple, Sensitive, and Efficient Determination of Trace Plant Growth Regulators in Cherry Tomatoes by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

The overuse of plant growth regulators (PGRs) in agricultural products has gradually increased in recent years, resulting in hazardous effects on food safety and human health. For the first time, a sensitive, accurate, and low-cost analytical method involving improved solid-phase extraction coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography was developed to determine trace PGRs in cherry tomatoes. Thereafter, the extraction mechanism and conditions were elucidated. Under optimized conditions, good linearity (0.04-400 ng g^-1; r ≥ 0.9996) and lower limits of detection (0.005-0.006 ng g^-1) were observed. The recoveries were 81.4-90.1%, with relative standard deviations of ≤6.7% (three levels). Finally, the developed method was successfully used to detect trace PGRs in cherry tomatoes. The results illustrated that this sensitive method shows great potential for application to monitor trace PGRs in agricultural products and, thus, provide technical support for food safety and public health.

Efficient enrichment and analysis of atrazine and its degradation products in Chinese Yam using accelerated solvent extraction and pipette tip solid-phase extraction followed by UPLC-DAD

The Chinese Yam (Dioscorea opposita) is cultivated widely in China. However, there are potential safety risks associated with herbicide residues in Chinese Yam because of its characteristics and unregulated use of pesticides. We developed an efficient sample preparation technique for simultaneous analysis of atrazine and its degradation products in Chinese Yam using accelerated solvent extraction and pipette tip solid-phase extraction followed by UPLC-DAD analysis. Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) were used as the adsorbent material. Method performance was evaluated and our results showed the limit of quantification was 1-3 μg/ kg, with recoveries in the range 79.2-103.8%. When compared with other methods, this method provided superior performance in terms of sensitivity, accuracy, and precision. This method is, therefore, expected to be useful in supervised residue analysis.

One pot green synthesis of m-aminophenol-urea-glyoxal resin as pipette tip solid-phase extraction adsorbent for simultaneous determination of four plant hormones in watermelon juice

Plant hormones (PHs) are a type of pesticide that can potentially affect human health. Therefore, their quantitative detection is particularly important. In this study, a green and economic method for the simultaneous extraction and determination of four PHs, namely thidiazuron, forchlorfenuron, 1-naphthylacetic acid, and 2-naphthoxyacetic acid, in watermelon juice was developed by using m-aminophenol-urea-glyoxal resin as the adsorbent for pipette tip solid phase extraction (PT-SPE) coupled with liquid chromatography. The resin was synthesized via a simple (one pot hydrothermal synthesis) and green (ethanol as the solvent and glyoxal as crosslinking agent) process. The synthesized resin possesses multiple functional groups (hydroxyl, amino, and imino, among others), high adsorption capacity, larger specific surface area than the urea-glyoxal resin and m-aminophenol-glyoxal resin, and can be regenerated easily. The PT-SPE device is simple, cheap, and easy to obtain, and the adsorbent dosage is only 5.0 mg. The proposed method has a wide linear detection range, high recovery, good precision, and high sensitivity, and satisfies the measurement requirements for detecting trace levels of PHs in fruits and vegetables.

Cationic metal-organic framework based mixed-matrix membrane for extraction of phenoxy carboxylic acid (PCA) herbicides from water samples followed by UHPLC-MS/MS determination

A novel kind of cationic metal-organic framework(MOF) based mixed-matrix membrane(MMM) namely cationic MOF-MMM was firstly designed and used for simultaneous dispersive membrane extraction(DME) of six phenoxy carboxylic acid(PCA) herbicides from water samples followed by determination using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The cationic MOF-MMM was synthesized by soaking the zirconium-based MOFs in a polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) solution and further functionalization with quaternary amine groups, viz., UiO-66-NMe₃⁺ MMM. The well-prepared UiO-66-NMe₃⁺ MMM was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, XRD, XPS, NMR and etc. Several main variables influencing the MMM based DME efficiency were investigated and optimized in detail, such as dosage ratio of MOF/PVDF, solution pH, extraction time, coexistent anions and ionic strength. Electrostatic interactions dominated adsorption mechanism between anionic PCAs and cationic UiO-66-NMe₃⁺ MMM, along with ππ conjugation and cation-π bonding, leading to better adsorption performance. Low limits of detection in the range of 0.03-0.59 ng/L and satisfactory recoveries within 80.06-117.40 % for all the PCAs are a reliable witness to demonstrate supreme sensitivity and the applicability of the developed method. By relying on the obtained results, the present work implied cationic MOF-MMM based DME can be a versatile and worthy utility for extraction of pollutants from different water samples with high throughput.

Deep eutectic solvent functionalized graphene oxide composite adsorbent for miniaturized pipette-tip solid-phase extraction of toluene and xylene exposure biomarkers in urine prior to their determination with HPLC-UV

A deep eutectic solvent functionalized graphene oxide composite adsorbent (DFG) was synthesized through reversible-addition fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization. The synthesized DFG had multiple adsorption interactions after covalent modification with a deep eutectic solvent (allyltriethylammonium bromide/ethylene glycol). Adsorption isotherms and kinetics studies of DFG indicate that the adsorption of hippuric acid (HA) and methylhippuric acid (MHA) was monolayer chemical adsorption. The comparison of DFG with commercial adsorbents demonstrates that the adsorption ability of DFG was superior. This was due to the multiple adsorption interactions of DFG for the three analytes (mainly π-interaction, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic adsorption, and hydrophobic interaction). The DFG adsorbent was applied to miniaturized pipette-tip solid-phase extraction (MPT-SPE), followed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to determine biomarkers in urine for toluene and xylene exposure. The DFG-MPT-SPE-HPLC method required only 2.00 mg of DFG as adsorbent, 0.50 mL of washing solvent, and 0.40 mL of elution solvent to achieve a wide linear range (0.200-200 μg mL^-1), high recoveries (90.9-99.1%), and high precision (RSD ≤ 6.3%). The proposed method was applied to determine HA and MHA in urine samples from occupational workers. Amino-modified Scholl-coupling mesoporous polymer for online solid-phase extraction of plant growth regulators from bean sprouts

A new amino-modified Scholl-coupling mesoporous polymer (NH₂@SMPA)-online solid-phase extraction method, coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (online SPE-HPLC) was established for the analysis of six plant growth regulators (PGRs) in bean sprouts. NH₂@SMPA was synthesized by acid-catalyzed deacetylation of acetylamino-Scholl-coupling mesoporous polymer (SMPA). The diversity of functional groups, such as aromatic, acetylamino, and NH₂, was conducive to multiple binding interactions between NH₂@SMPA and PGRs. NH₂@SMPA exhibited superior extraction capability for PGRs, compared with SMPA and commercial adsorbents. The extraction conditions, including loading solvent, pH of loading solution, eluting solvent, and flow rates of loading and elution, were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, wide linear ranges (0.01-500 μg kg^-1) and low detection limits (2.34-20.2 ng kg^-1) were obtained. The recoveries were satisfactory, i.e., 86.0% to 109% with relative standard deviations ≤9.8% (n = 3). Finally, the online SPE-HPLC method was successfully used for determination of PGRs in bean sprouts.

Superhydrophilic graphene oxide/electrospun cellulose nanofibre for efficient adsorption of organophosphorus pesticides from environmental samples

Superhydrophilic graphene oxide/electrospun cellulose nanofibre (GO/CNF) was synthesized, characterized and successfully used in a solid-phase membrane tip adsorption (SPMTA) as an adsorbent towards a simultaneous analysis of polar organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in several food and water samples. Separation, determination and quantification were achieved prior to ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with ultraviolet detector. The influence of several parameters such as sample pH, adsorption time, adsorbent dosage and initial concentration were investigated. SPMTA was linear in the range of 0.05 and 10 mg l^-1 under the optimum adsorption conditions (sample pH 12; 5 mg of adsorbent dosage; 15 min of adsorption time) for methyl parathion, ethoprophos, sulfotepp and chlorpyrifos with excellent correlation coefficients of 0.994-0.999. Acceptable precision (RSDs) as achieved for intraday (0.06-5.44%, n = 3) and interday (0.17-7.76%, n = 3) analyses. Low limits of detection (0.01-0.05 mg l^-1) and satisfactory consistency in adsorption (71.14-99.95%) were obtained for the spiked OPPs from Sungai Pahang, Tasik Cheras, cabbages and rice samples. The adsorption data were well followed the second-order kinetic model and fits the Freundlich adsorption model. The newly synthesized GO/CNF showed a great adsorbent potential for OPPs analysis.

Reshaping of pipette tip: A facile and practical strategy for sorbent packing-free solid phase extraction

Pipette tip-based solid phase extraction (PT-SPE) has been proved to be an effective and user-friendly separation technique due to its miniaturized procedure and practical convenience. However, the vast majority of existing PT-SPE devices consist of a filter-sorbents-filter sandwich structure, which may suffer the unforeseen risk of sorbents leakage caused by the looseness of filters. More importantly, many high-capacity nanosorbents with particle size smaller than pore size of filters are unavailable. Thus, sorbent packing-free and sample low-consumption PT-SPE could be a more robust strategy for separation and detection, but such a possibility has not been explored yet. Herein we report a tubing reshaping strategy for facile fabrication of sorbent packing-free PT-SPE devices. Three types of reshaped PTs, namely stretched tube-like, self-crimping and filter in-built PTs, were fabricated via simple heating and stretching operations. The reshaped PTs exhibited flexible surface chemical post-modification. The SPE process was directly performed in reshaped PTs with an obviously enhanced extraction efficiency compared to once-shaping PTs while no need of packing sorbents. Extraction of nucleosides from human urine by boronic acid-functionalized reshaped PTs was demonstrated. Our findings technically renovate the structural composition of PT-SPE devices. As PTs are inexpensive and high-plasticity, the sorbent packing-free SPE scheme presented herein could find more promising applications and provides a new perspective for design and fabrication of novel sorbent packing-free SPE devices.

Preparation of porous aromatic framework modified graphene oxide for pipette-tip solid-phase extraction of theophylline in tea

A new material called as porous aromatic frameworks modified graphene oxide (PAFs-GO) was synthesized, and it was used as an adsorbent in pipette-tip SPE for the effective purification and enrichment of theophylline in tea sample by HPLC. The properties of PAFs-GO were characterized by field emission SEM, FTIR, thermogravimetry analysis and Brunauer Emmett Teller N₂ adsorption-desorption analysis. The results of static adsorption and dynamic adsorption test showed PAFs-GO had higher adsorption ability (93.25 mg/g) than graphene oxide. The LOD and LOQ of the method were 0.0141 and 0.0471 µg/mL, respectively. The acceptable method reproducibility was found as intra- and inter-day precisions, yielding the RSDs <4.62%. By introducing PAFs as support skeleton, the specific surface area of GO was effectively increased, and the penetrability was improved. Studies showed that the proposed method had been successfully applied for purification and enrichment of theophylline in complex tea matrix.

Porous ionic liquid polymer: A reusable adsorbent with broad operating pH range for speciation of nitrate and nitrite

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a class of fluids with unique physicochemical properties employing polymeric substances emerging new materials. Solidification of ILs into porous materials generates porous ionic liquid polymers that combine the unique characteristics of ILs with common porous materials and polymers. In this study, it's the first time the porous ionic liquid polymer was chosen as a sorbent for extraction and speciation of nitrite and nitrate. Porous IL was prepared through polymerization of 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide monomers in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and crosslinking of ethylene glycol dimethyl acrylate (EGDMA). Parameters affecting the adsorbent performance were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, correlation coefficient (R²) was 0.9996 and LOD was 0.1 µg L^-1. This method presented the linearity in the concentration range between 0.1-100 µg L^-1 and the relative standard deviation was 3.2%. Finally, the adsorption behavior of the obtained sorbent for nitrate and nitrite determination in various real samples was evaluated. The result indicates that the porous ionic liquid polymer showed high adsorption capacity (233 mg g^-1). The convenient preparation of the porous ionic liquid material, as well as high adsorption capacity for anionic pollutants predicted its broad application potential in anion removal materials.
