Abstract
KEY MESSAGE A large fragment deletion of CpAPRR2, encoding a two-component response regulator-like protein, which influences immature white rind color formation in zucchini (Cucurbita pepo). Fruit rind color is an important agronomic trait that affects commodity quality and consumer choice in zucchini (Cucurbita pepo). However, the molecular mechanism controlling rind color is unclear. We characterized two zucchini inbred lines: '19' (dark green rind) and '113' (white rind). Genetic analysis revealed white immature fruit rind color to be controlled by a dominant locus (CpW). Combining bulked segregant analysis sequencing (BSA-seq) and Kompetitive Allele-Specific PCR (KASP) markers, we mapped the CpW locus to a 100.4 kb region on chromosome 5 and then narrow down the candidate region to 37.5 kb using linkage analysis of 532 BC1 and 1613 F2 individuals, including 6 coding genes. Among them, Cp4.1LG05g02070 (CpAPRR2), encoding a two-component response regulator-like protein, was regarded to be a promising candidate gene. The expression level of CpAPRR2 in dark green rind was significantly higher than that in white rind and was induced by light. A deletion of 2227 bp at the 5' end of CpAPRR2 in '113' might explain the white phenotype. Further analysis of allelic diversity in zucchini germplasm resources revealed rind color to be associated with the deletion of CpAPRR2. Subcellular localization analysis indicated that CpAPRR2 was a nuclear protein. Transcriptome analysis using near-isogenic lines with dark green (DG) and white (W) rind indicated that genes involved in photosynthesis and porphyrin metabolism pathways were enriched in DG compared with W. Additionally, chlorophyll synthesis-related genes were upregulated in DG. These results identify mechanisms of zucchini rind color and provide genetic resources for breeding.

Abstract
Plants with partial or complete loss of chlorophylls and other pigments are frequently occurring in nature but not commonly found. In the present study, we characterize a leaf color mutant 'arly01' with an albino stripe in the middle of the leaf, which is an uncommon ornamental trait in Anoectochilus roxburghii. The albino "mutant" middle portion and green "normal" leaf parts were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and their pigment contents were determined. The mutant portion exhibited underdevelopment of plastids and had reduced chlorophyll and other pigment (carotenoid, anthocyanin, and flavonoid) content compared to the normal portion. Meanwhile, comparative transcript analysis and metabolic pathways mapping showed that a total of 599 differentially expressed genes were mapped to 78 KEGG pathways, most of which were down-regulated in the mutant portion. The five most affected metabolic pathways were determined to be oxidative phosphorylation, photosynthesis system, carbon fixation & starch and sucrose metabolism, porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism, and flavonoid biosynthesis. Our findings suggested that the mutant 'arly01' was a partial albinism of A. roxburghii, characterized by the underdevelopment of chloroplasts, low contents of photosynthetic and other color pigments, and a number of down-regulated genes and metabolites. With the emergence of ornamental A. roxburghii in southern China, 'arly01' could become a popular cultivar due to its unique aesthetics.

Abstract
Sweetpotato, Ipomoea batatas (L.), a key food security crop, is negatively impacted by heat, drought, and salinity stress. The orange-fleshed sweetpotato cultivar "Beauregard" was exposed to heat, salt, and drought treatments for 24 and 48 h to identify genes responding to each stress condition in leaves. Analysis revealed both common (35 up regulated, 259 down regulated genes in the three stress conditions) and unique sets of up regulated (1337 genes by drought, 516 genes by heat, and 97 genes by salt stress) and down regulated (2445 genes by drought, 678 genes by heat, and 204 genes by salt stress) differentially expressed genes (DEGs) suggesting common, yet stress-specific transcriptional responses to these three abiotic stressors. Gene Ontology analysis of down regulated DEGs common to both heat and salt stress revealed enrichment of terms associated with "cell population proliferation" suggestive of an impact on the cell cycle by the two stress conditions. To identify shared and unique gene co-expression networks under multiple abiotic stress conditions, weighted gene co-expression network analysis was performed using gene expression profiles from heat, salt, and drought stress treated 'Beauregard' leaves yielding 18 co-expression modules. One module was enriched for "response to water deprivation," "response to abscisic acid," and "nitrate transport" indicating synergetic crosstalk between nitrogen, water, and phytohormones with genes encoding osmotin, cell expansion, and cell wall modification proteins present as key hub genes in this drought-associated module. This research lays the groundwork for exploring to a further degree, mechanisms for abiotic stress tolerance in sweetpotato.

Abstract
Citrus, 1 of the largest fruit crops with global economic and nutritional importance, contains fruit known as hesperidium with unique morphological types. Citrus fruit ripening is accompanied by chlorophyll degradation and carotenoid biosynthesis, which are indispensably linked to color formation and the external appearance of citrus fruits. However, the transcriptional coordination of these metabolites during citrus fruit ripening remains unknown. Here, we identified the MADS-box transcription factor CsMADS3 in Citrus hesperidium that coordinates chlorophyll and carotenoid pools during fruit ripening. CsMADS3 is a nucleus-localized transcriptional activator, and its expression is induced during fruit development and coloration. Overexpression of CsMADS3 in citrus calli, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), and citrus fruits enhanced carotenoid biosynthesis and upregulated carotenogenic genes while accelerating chlorophyll degradation and upregulating chlorophyll degradation genes. Conversely, the interference of CsMADS3 expression in citrus calli and fruits inhibited carotenoid biosynthesis and chlorophyll degradation and downregulated the transcription of related genes. Further assays confirmed that CsMADS3 directly binds and activates the promoters of phytoene synthase 1 (CsPSY1) and chromoplast-specific lycopene β-cyclase (CsLCYb2), 2 key genes in the carotenoid biosynthetic pathway, and STAY-GREEN (CsSGR), a critical chlorophyll degradation gene, which explained the expression alterations of CsPSY1, CsLCYb2, and CsSGR in the above transgenic lines. These findings reveal the transcriptional coordination of chlorophyll and carotenoid pools in the unique hesperidium of Citrus and may contribute to citrus crop improvement.

Abstract
The effect of melatonin treatment on the carotenoid metabolism in broccoli florets during storage was explored. The results indicated that 100 µmol/L of melatonin maintained the sensory quality of broccoli florets, which retarded the increase of the L* value and the decrease of the H value. Melatonin treatment increased the activities of tryptophan decarboxylase (TDC), tryptamine 5-hydroxylase (T5H), serotonin N-acetyltransferase (SNAT) and N-acetylserotonin methyltransferase (ASMT), leading to the enrichment of endogenous melatonin content in broccoli florets. Meanwhile, the treatment inhibited the concentrations of β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin and lutein, which was beneficial in delaying the yellowing of broccoli. In addition, a series of carotenoid biosynthetic genes such as BoPSY, BoPDS, BoZDS, BoLCYβ and BoZEP was also suppressed by melatonin. Further analysis revealed that the lower carotenoid content and the down-regulated BoNCED expression in treated broccoli resulted in less accumulation of abscisic acid precursors, inhibiting abscisic acid production during the yellowing process.

Abstract
The loss of characteristic nutrient glucoraphanin during the shelf life seriously affects the nutritional quality of broccoli. Here, we monitored the changes in the levels of sulfur donors (cysteine and glutathione) required for glucoraphanin biosynthesis. Similar to glucoraphanin, cysteine content decreased sharply. Continuous down-regulation of BoCysK1 and BoCysK2 genes encoding cysteine synthase might account for cysteine loss. Contrarily, glutathione content accumulated steadily, which might owe to the up-regulation of biosynthetic gene (BoEC1). Additionally, the change of malondialdehyde content was positively correlated with glutathione, implying that oxidative stress might stimulate glutathione accumulation. Nevertheless, the expression of BoGSTF11 gene encoding glutathione S-transferases was down-regulated, which blocked the supply of glutathione. The increase in the content of raphanusamic acid (degradation product) indicated that insufficient supply of sulfur donors not only could constrain the biosynthesis of glucoraphanin but also triggered its degradation.

Abstract
Thirteen varieties of feijoa (Feijoa sellowiana) fruit were collected and the physical and chemical properties of feijoa peel, flesh, seed, and leaf were analyzed. Large diversities in the physicochemical characteristics and phenolic and volatile composition among various parts and between different varieties of feijoa were observed. Degrees Brix of whole fruits ranged from 10.1 (Anatoki) to 18.0 (No. 2) °Brix. Procyanidin B-type tetramer, procyanidin B-type dimer, and procyanidin C-type trimer had the highest concentrations in all parts and varieties of feijoa. Caffeoyl glucose, dihydroferulic acid 4-O-glucuronide, galloyl glucose, and lariciresinol-sesquilignan were detected in feijoa fruits and leaves. A total of 105 esters, 68 terpenes, 20 alcohols, 31 hydrocarbons, 12 aldehydes, and 11 ketones were related to aromatic attributes of fruits and leaves. Early season and mid-season varieties had larger variations in the chemical properties than late-season varieties. Anatoki, Kakariki, and No.1, have the potential to be developed for attractive flavor and functional properties.

Abstract
Leaf color is one of the most important features for plants used for landscape and ornamental purposes. However, the regulatory mechanism of yellow leaf coloration still remains elusive in many plant species. To understand the complex genetic mechanism of yellow-leaf Forsythia, we first compared the pigment content and leaf anatomical structure of yellow-leaf and green-leaf accessions derived from a hybrid population. The physiological and cytological analyses demonstrated that yellow-leaf progenies were chlorophyll deficient with defected chloroplast structure. With comparative transcriptome analysis, we identified a number of candidate genes differentially expressed between yellow-leaf and green-leaf Forsythia plants. Among these genes, we further screened out two candidates, ChlH (magnesium chelatase Subunit H) and POLGAMMA2 (POLYMERASE GAMMA 2), with consistent relative-expression pattern between different colored plants. To verify the gene function, we performed virus-induced gene silencing assays and observed yellow-leaf phenotype with total chlorophyll content reduced by approximately 66 and 83% in ChlH-silenced and POLGAMMA2-silenced plants, respectively. We also observed defected chloroplast structure in both ChlH-silenced and POLGAMMA2-silenced Forsythia. Transient over-expression of ChlH and POLGAMMA2 led to increased chlorophyll content and restored thylakoid architecture in yellow-leaf Forsythia. With transcriptome sequencing, we detected a number of genes related to chlorophyll biosynthesis and chloroplast development that were responsive to the silencing of ChlH and POLGAMMA2. To summarize, ChlH and POLGAMMA2 are two key genes that possibly related to yellow-leaf coloration in Forsythia through modulating chlorophyll synthesis and chloroplast ultrastructure. Our study provided insights into the molecular aspects of yellow-leaf Forsythia and expanded the knowledge of foliage color regulation in woody ornamental plants.

Abstract
The NYC-like (NOL) enzyme is considered as an essential enzyme for chlorophyll b degradation, which catalyzes the formation of 7-hydroxymethyl chlorophyll a from chlorophyll b. The ZjNOL gene was cloned from Zoysia japonica with a completed coding sequence of 981-bp in length, encoding 326 amino acids. ZjNOL was localized on the stroma side of the thylakoid membrane, and co-localized with ZjNYC in the chloroplasts. Multiple photoregulatory elements and hormone regulatory elements were identified in the promoter region of the ZjNOL gene, and the expression level of the ZjNOL gene was dramatically up-regulated in senescence leaves, which were regulated by a variety of plant hormones. ZjNOL's ectopic expression in creeping bentgrass produced yellow leaves, thicker cortex, and smaller vascular column cells. Additionally, transgenic plants exhibited morphological alterations in their chloroplast structure, and the number of grana and thylakoids per grana stack reduced dramatically. Transgenic plants also had a lower photosynthetic rate and Fm/Fv than the control. The transgenic plants displayed a decreased chlorophyll content and a greater rate of ion leakage. The properties and activities of ZjNOL will serve as a foundation for future research into gene functions and regulatory processes.

Abstract
Due to geographical location and climatic factors, postharvest storage and preservation of tropical fruits and vegetables are still facing huge challenges. Ethephon (ETH) is widely used as an ethylene donor to achieve the commercial color and flavor of climacteric fruits. However, the effect of ETH on fruit coloration was affected by many factors, such as fruit species, plant hormones, and storage conditions. In this study, the main mango variety “Guifei” in Hainan, China, was used to study the effects of different concentrations of ETH on fruit ripening and coloration during storage at 25°C. Results showed that postharvest treatment with ETH (300, 500, and 900 mg·L−1) enhanced the activities of ACS and ACO, stimulated the release of endogenous ethylene, and accelerated fruit softening and color transformation. Compared with control, ETH treatment not only accelerated the breakdown of chlorophyll with higher activities of Chlase and MDCase but also induced the synthesis of carotenoid and anthocyanin with higher activities of PAL, CHI, DFR, and UFGT. Moreover, the changes in DFR and UFGT activities coincided with the increase in ETH concentration. Further, correlation analysis showed that the production of endogenous ethylene induced by ETH was significantly negatively correlated with firmness and chlorophyll content, whereas positively correlated with MDA content and anthocyanin content. This study suggests that the positive effect of ETH on “Guifei” mango color transformation is concentration-dependent within a certain concentration range. Anthocyanin is the main pigment for the red formation of “Guifei” mango, and DFR and UFGT may play critical roles in anthocyanin synthesis. ETH promoted the red coloration by promoting the release of endogenous ethylene and enhancing the activities of anthocyanin synthesis enzymes.

Abstract
Lonicera japonica is not only an important resource of traditional Chinese medicine, but also has very high horticultural value. Studies have been performed on the physiological responses of L. japonica leaves to chilling, however, the molecular mechanism underlying the low temperature-induced leaves morphological changes remains unclear. In this study, it has been demonstrated that the ratio of pigments content including anthocyanins, chlorophylls, and carotenoids was significantly altered in response to chilling condition, resulting in the color transformation of leaves from green to purple. Transcriptomic analysis showed there were 10,329 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) co-expressed during chilling stress. DEGs were mainly mapped to secondary metabolism, cell wall, and minor carbohydrate. The upregulated genes (UGs) were mainly enriched in protein metabolism, transport, and signaling, while UGs in secondary metabolism were mainly involved in phenylpropaoids-flavonoids pathway (PFP) and carotenoids pathway (CP). Protein-protein interaction analysis illustrated that 21 interacted genes including CAX3, NHX2, ACA8, and ACA9 were enriched in calcium transport/potassium ion transport. BR biosynthesis pathway related genes and BR insensitive (BRI) were collectively induced by chilling stress. Furthermore, the expression of genes involved in anthocyanins and CPs as well as the content of chlorogenic acid (CGA) and luteoloside were increased in leaves of L. japonica under stress. Taken together, these results indicate that the activation of PFP and CP in leaves of L. japonica under chilling stress, largely attributed to the elevation of calcium homeostasis and stimulation of BR signaling, which then regulated the PFP/CP related transcription factors.

Improving Shelf Life, Maintaining Quality, and Delaying Microbial Growth of Broccoli in Supply Chain Using Commercial Vacuum Cooling and Package Icing. HORTICULTURAE 2021. Abstract
Poor and inconsistent quality is a major barrier to increasing produce consumption, and the lack of shelf-life after purchase is the quality issue at retail displays of produce. This research aimed to investigate and identify cooling techniques, namely vacuum cooling and package icing used in supply chains, and any resulting extension of broccoli shelf-life, maintenance of physicochemical quality, and delay in microbial growth at retail stores. Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica cv. Montop) sustainably grown in the highlands of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai Province, under the Royal Project Foundation was experimented on vacuum cooling and package icing were selected to precool broccoli to 4 ± 1 °C. The effects of vacuum cooling using a final pressure of 0.6 kPa for 30 min and package icing using liner Styrofoam boxes (the best ratio of broccoli to crushed ice was 1:1 w/w) on physicochemical qualities, microbial growth, and shelf-life in simulated refrigerated retail displays were examined. The results illustrated that the shelf-life and quality of broccoli could be extended using both vacuum cooling and package icing. Both precooling techniques inhibited the yellowing of florets, provided high sensory scores, delayed microbial growth, and could be able to extend the shelf-life of broccoli. However, package icing offered greater potential for maintaining quality, especially retaining bioactive compounds, and extending shelf-life, thereby increasing the produce market window from 5 to 12 days at 8 ± 1 °C with 85% RH. Therefore, package icing was recommended in the supply chain for fresh broccoli cv. Montop grown in northern Thailand.

Abstract
The phytochrome-interacting factors (PIFs) proteins belong to the subfamily of basic helix–loop–helix (bHLH) transcription factors and play important roles in chloroplast development and chlorophyll biosynthesis. Currently, knowledge about the PIF gene family in Camellia sinensis remains very limited. In this study, seven PIF members were identified in the C. sinensis genome and named based on homology with AtPIF genes in Arabidopsis thaliana. All C. sinensis PIF (CsPIF) proteins have both the conserved active PHYB binding (APB) and bHLH domains. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that CsPIFs were clustered into four groups—PIF1, PIF3, PIF7, and PIF8—and most CsPIFs were clustered in pairs with their corresponding orthologs in Populus tremula. CsPIF members in the same group tended to display uniform or similar exon–intron distribution patterns and motif compositions. CsPIF genes were differentially expressed in C. sinensis with various leaf colors and strongly correlated with the expression of genes involved in the chlorophyll metabolism pathway. Promoter analysis of structural genes related to chlorophyll metabolism found DNA-binding sites of PIFs were abundant in the promoter regions. Protein–protein interaction networks of CsPIFs demonstrated a close association with phytochrome, PIF4, HY5, TOC1, COP1, and PTAC12 proteins. Additionally, subcellular localization and transcriptional activity analysis suggested that CsPIF3b was nuclear localized protein and possessed transcriptional activity. We also found that CsPIF3b could activate the transcription of CsHEMA and CsPOR in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves. This work provides comprehensive research of CsPIFs and would be helpful to further promote the regulation mechanism of PIF on chlorophyll metabolism in C. sinensis.

Abstract
Postharvest crop yellowing is a major concern in the broccoli industry. The effect and underlying mechanisms of 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) treatment on yellowing in postharvest broccoli were investigated. Treatment with 2 µM EBR markedly inhibited the increase of the yellowing index and L* values, causing higher retention of the metric hue angle and chlorophyll content compared to the control. Treatment also alleviated oxidative damage by preventing the accumulation of malondialdehyde and superoxide anion (O2•-). The ascorbic acid content of broccoli reached its lowest value at the end of its shelf life, whereas that of the treated sample was obviously higher than the control. Moreover, treated broccoli exhibited higher superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activities. Multivariate statistical analysis further demonstrated the effective enhancement of EBR treatment on antioxidant enzymes. These results indicate that exogenous application of EBR ameliorates postharvest yellowing by improving the antioxidant capacity of broccoli.

Abstract
Pre-harvest bagging or post-harvest ethylene treatments on lemons are commonly applied to change the surface color from green to favorable yellow. In this study, the differential mechanisms of the pigment metabolism by the two treatments were investigated by pigments contents and related genetic expression. The results showed that both treatments reduced the number of chloroplasts and the content of chlorophyll. The differential expression of PSY1 and PSY2 were observed, causing the different accumulation of the main carotenoid phytoene content. The differential expression of NYC resulted in altered contents of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b, and further led to the difference in a* value. More interestingly, the degradation of chlorophyll uncovered the color of carotenoids, leading to the color changed from green to yellow.

Effect of Oxidative Stress on Physicochemical Quality of Taiwanese Seagrape (Caulerpa lentillifera) with the Application of Alternating Current Electric Field (ACEF) during Post-Harvest Storage. Abstract
This study aims to determine the physicochemical quality of seagrape (Caulerpa lentillifera) as a freshness label for products cultivated in different seasons. The applied post-harvest storage experiments compared between, within and without seawater that led to oxidative stress conditions. Water content, malondialdehyde (MDA) compound, total phenolic content (TPC), and chlorophyll content were observed at 0, 3, 6, and 9 days of storage. The storage without seawater showed sharper quality reductions by reaching 20–40% of water loss, 70–90% of MDA production, 15–25% of TPC reduction, and 40–60% of total chlorophyll degradation. The storage within seawater showed lower quality reductions due to the specific growth rates still reaching 5–10%. This study found that the greater the physicochemical quality, the slower the decomposition rates of the stored seagrape during storage. Therefore, the seagrapes’ obvious discoloration occurred earlier in winter, followed by summer and spring. Kinetics of chlorophyll degradation on seagrape in different seasons meet different order-reactions during storage. Furthermore, alternating current electric field (ACEF) treatment with 125 kV/m of intensity for 60 min can lower the spring seagrapes’ physicochemical quality by reaching 10–30% of inhibition, resulting in the shelf-life extension for up to 12 days of post-harvest storage.

Abstract
Pathogens secrete a large number of effectors that manipulate host processes to create an environment conducive to pathogen colonization. However, the underlying mechanisms by which Plasmopara viticola effectors manipulate host plant cells remain largely unclear. In this study, we reported that RXLR31154, a P. viticola RXLR effector, was highly expressed during the early stages of P. viticola infection. In our study, stable expression of RXLR31154 in grapevine (Vitis vinifera) and Nicotiana benthamiana promoted leaf colonization by P. viticola and Phytophthora capsici, respectively. By yeast two-hybrid screening, the 23-kDa oxygen-evolving enhancer 2 (VpOEE2 or VpPsbP), encoded by the PsbP gene, in Vitis piasezkii accession Liuba-8 was identified as a host target of RXLR31154. Overexpression of VpPsbP enhanced susceptibility to P. viticola in grapevine and P. capsici in N. benthamiana, and silencing of NbPsbPs, the homologs of PsbP in N. benthamiana, reduced P. capcisi colonization, indicating that PsbP is a susceptibility factor. RXLR31154 and VpPsbP protein were co-localized in the chloroplast. Moreover, VpPsbP reduced H2 O2 accumulation and activated the 1 O2 signaling pathway in grapevine. RXLR31154 could stabilize PsbP. Together, our data revealed that RXLR31154 reduces H2 O2 accumulation and activates the 1 O2 signaling pathway through stabilizing PsbP, thereby promoting disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Leaf color is an important trait in breeding of leafy vegetables. Y-05, a pakchoi (Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis) cultivar, displays yellow inner (YIN) and green outer leaves (GOU) after cold acclimation. However, the mechanism of this special phenotype remains elusive. RESULTS We assumed that the yellow leaf phenotype of Y-05 maybe caused by low chlorophyll content. Pigments measurements and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed that the yellow phenotype is closely related with decreased chlorophyll content and undeveloped thylakoids in chloroplast. Transcriptomes and metabolomes sequencing were next performed on YIN and GOU. The transcriptomes data showed that 4887 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the YIN and GOU leaves were mostly enriched in the chloroplast- and chlorophyll-related categories, indicating that the chlorophyll biosynthesis is mainly affected during cold acclimation. Together with metabolomes data, the inhibition of chlorophyll biosynthesis is contributed by blocked 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) synthesis in yellow inner leaves, which is further verified by complementary and inhibitory experiments of ALA. Furthermore, we found that the blocked ALA is closely associated with increased BrFLU expression, which is indirectly altered by cold acclimation. In BrFLU-silenced pakchoi Y-05, cold-acclimated leaves still showed green phenotype and higher chlorophyll content compared with control, meaning silencing of BrFLU can rescue the leaf yellowing induced by cold acclimation. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggested that cold acclimation can indirectly promote the expression of BrFLU in inner leaves of Y-05 to block ALA synthesis, resulting in decreased chlorophyll content and leaf yellowing. This study revealed the underlying mechanisms of leaves color change in cold-acclimated Y-05.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chlorophyll is the most abundant pigment on Earth, essential for the capture of light energy during photosynthesis. During senescence, chlorophyll degradation is highly regulated in order to diminish toxicity of the free chlorophyll molecule due to its photoactivity. The first step in the chlorophyll degradation pathway is the conversion of chlorophyll b to chlorophyll a by means of two consecutive reactions catalyzed by enzymes coded by NYC1 (NON-YELLOW COLORING 1), NOL (NYC1-LIKE) and HCAR. RESULTS In this work, we studied the expression of NOL and HCAR genes during postharvest senescence of broccoli. We found that the expression of BoNOL increase during the first days of storage and then decrease. In the case of BoHCAR, its expression is maintained during the first days and then it also diminishes. Additionally, the effect of different postharvest treatments on the expression of these genes was also analyzed. It was observed that the expression of BoNOL is lower in the treatments performed with 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BAP) and modified atmospheres, while BoHCAR expression showed an increase in these same treatments, and a decrease in the treatment with ethylene. There were no variations in the expression of both genes in heat treatment, UV-C treatment and visible light treatment. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that both BoHCAR and BoNOL show a lower regulation of their expression than other genes involved in chlorophyll degradation during senescence. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Monascus pigments (MPs) with different color characteristics, produced by submerged fermentation of Monascus purpureus M9, have potential application in food industry. In the present study, the effects and regulatory mechanisms of ammonium nitrate (AN) on the color characteristics of MPs were investigated. The concentration of intracellular pigments was significantly decreased when subjected to AN. The hue and lightness value indicated AN altered the total pigments appearance from original red to orange. The HPLC analysis for six major components of MPs showed that the production of rubropunctatin or monascorubrin, was significantly reduced to the undetectable level, whereas the yields of monascin, ankaflavin, rubropunctamine and monascorubramine, were apparently increased with AN supplement. To be noted, via real-time quantitative PCR strategy, the expression level of mppG, closely relative to orange pigments biosynthesis, was significantly down-regulated. However, the expression of mppE, involved in yellow pigments pathway, was up-regulated. Moreover, the broth pH value was dropped to 2.5–3.5 in the fermentation process resulted from AN treatment, along with the increased extracellular polysaccharide biosynthesis. Taken together, the change of MPs categories and amounts by AN might be the driving force for the color characteristics variation in M. purpureus M9. The present study provided useful data for producing MPs with different compositions and modified color characteristics.

Abstract
Melatonin supports the photochemical activity of photosystem II (PS II) and slows down the degradation of the main photosynthetic pigments during aging of leaves of monocotyledonous plants. The protective effect of melatonin is manifested in an increase in the maximum (Fv/Fm) and effective (Y(II)) quantum yield of PS II, in an increase of regulated (Y(NPQ)) and a decrease in unregulated dissipation of excitation energy (Y(NO)). These effects are based on the ability of melatonin to reduce the intensity of oxidative stress by maintaining a high level of carotenoids, which exhibit pronounced antioxidant properties, during aging.

Abstract
Yellowing is one of the main problems of quality deterioration in the storage, transportation, and sales of post-harvested broccoli, which seriously affects the commodity value of broccoli. Therefore, it is of significance to understand the mechanism of the process and develop effective regulation technology. In this review, we expounded the changes in the appearance of the flower ball, bud morphology, and calyx cell structure, as well as endogenous pigment metabolism, accompanying the yellowing process of broccoli. In addition, recent research on the molecular mechanism of yellowing was summarized from the aspects of transcriptome analysis and transcription regulation. Finally, the progress on the control technology of broccoli yellowing was reviewed.

In this study, changes in the photosynthetic capacity, photosynthetic pigment and antioxidant level were evaluated in soybean at flowering stages under different [CO2] (400 μmol mol-1 and 600 μmol mol-1) and water level (the relative water content of the soil was 75-85% soil capacity, and the relative water content of the soil was 35-45% soil capacity under drought stress). Changes in levels of osmolytes, hormones and signal transduction enzymes were also determined. The results showed that under drought stress, increasing [CO2] significantly reduced leaf transpiration rate (E), net photosynthetic rate (PN) and chlorophyll b content. Elevated [CO2] significantly decreased the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline (PRO), while significantly increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) and abscisic acid (ABA) under drought stress. Elevated [CO2] significantly increased the transcript and protein levels of calcium-dependent protein kinase (CDPK), and Glutathione S- transferase (GST). The content of HSP-70 and the corresponding gene expression level were significantly reduced by elevated [CO2], irrespective of water treatments. Taken together, these results suggest that elevated [CO2] does not alleviate the negative impacts of drought stress on photosynthesis. ABA, CDPK and GST may play an important role in elevated CO2-induced drought stress responses.
