Abstract
Chemical residues in food pose health risks such as cancer and liver issues. This has driven the search for safer natural alternatives to synthetic fungicides and preservatives. The aim of this study was to characterize the chemical composition of the essential oils (EO), determine the polyphenolic contents, and evaluate the in vitro antioxidant and antifungal activities of methanol extracts (ME), essential oils (EO), and powders from Rosmarinus officinalis L. (rosemary) and Thymus ciliatus (Desf) Benth. (thyme) from the M'sila region, Algeria. The chemical composition of the EOs was determined by GC-MS. R. officinalis EO was composed of 31 components, mainly camphor (41.22%), camphene (18.14%), and α-pinene (17.49%); T. ciliatus EO was composed of 58 components, mainly, in percentage, α-pinene (22.18), myrcene (13.13), β-pinene (7.73), β-caryophyllene (10.21), and germacrene D (9.90). The total phenols and flavonoids were determined spectrophotometrically, and the rosemary ME was found to possess the highest polyphenolic content (127.1 ± 2.40 µg GAE/mg), while the thyme ME had the highest flavonoid content (48.01 ± 0.99 µg QE/mg). The antioxidant activity was assessed using three methods: rosemary ME was the most potent, followed by DPPH (IC50 = 13.43 ± 0.14 µg/mL), β-carotene/linoleic acid (IC50 = 39.01 ± 2.16 μg/mL), and reducing power (EC50 = 15.03 ± 1.43 µg/mL). Antifungal activity was assessed for 32 pathogenic and foodborne fungi. Four methods were applied to the solid medium. Incorporating the powdered plant into the culture medium (at 10%) reduced the fungal growth to greater than 50% in 21.88% and 6.25% of all fungal isolates, for R. officinalis and T. ciliatus, respectively. The ME, applied by the well diffusion method (0.1 g/mL), was less effective. Different concentrations of EO were tested. Incorporating the EO into the culture medium (1500 μL/L) inhibited 50% of the molds to levels of 50 and 75% for R. officinalis and T. ciliatus, respectively, with the complete inhibition of four fungi. Fumigated EO (15 μL) inhibited 65% of the molds to levels of 65 and 81.25% for R. officinalis and T. ciliatus, respectively, with the complete inhibition of five fungi. There was little to no sporulation in conjunction with the inhibition. Our results revealed some of the potential of the studied plants to fight foodborne molds and presented their promising characteristics as a source of alternatives to chemical pesticides and synthetic preservatives. Further studies are needed to find adequate application techniques in the food safety area.

Abstract
Mānuka (MO) and rosemary oils (RO) -containing nanoemulsions and nanocapsules made of sodium alginate and whey protein, were designed and compared for their antioxidant effect. Mānuka oil-nanoemulsions and nanocapsules had smaller particle sizes (343 and 330 nm), less negative zeta potential (-12 mV and -10 mV), higher phenolic content, and antiradical characteristics than RO-nano-entities. However, nano-entities of both oils showed more thermostability and sustained release than free oils. Further, the antioxidant effect of essential oils and their nano-entities was compared against sodium nitrite (SN)-added and without antioxidants-added (controls) and Wagyu and crossbred beef pastes (14 days refrigerated storage). No significant difference among MO, RO and their nano-entities was noticed in crossbred pastes, while in Wagyu, nanoemulsions showed the lowest oxidation values than controls and SN-added pastes. Hence, nano-entities can be alternatives to chemical preservatives as natural antioxidants in meat preservation, along with improved thermal stability and release than free oils.

Abstract
Inflammatory processes are often accompanied by oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, which might lead to cellular and organ damage. Carnosic acid (CA), an active component found in rosemary, exhibits pharmacological properties including antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral effects. The aim of this research was to investigate whether CA can mitigate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in poultry and to understand its underlying mechanisms. We administered CA to broiler chickens via oral gavage and treated them with LPS, followed by analysis of the effects of different dosages of CA on body weight, antioxidative capacity, and inflammatory factors. Carnosic acid had no significant impact on the body weight of broiler chickens. However, serum analysis indicated that the middle dose of CA effectively enhanced the antioxidative capacity and reduced levels of oxidative stress and inflammation-related factors. Moreover, in the liver, CA demonstrated the ability to regulate the expression of proteins such as heat shock protein 60 (HSP60), heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), and P38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (P38), suggesting its protective role against liver damage induced by LPS. In the intestinal tract of broiler chickens, CA regulated the expression and localization of proteins including HSP60, HSP70, NFE2 like bZIP transcription factor 2 (Nrf2), and P38, while also influencing the expression of inflammatory markers such as protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type C (CD45), and connexin (Cx). These findings revealed the potential protective mechanisms of CA in alleviating oxidative stress and inflammatory damage induced by LPS in poultry. Carnosic acid notably enhanced the chickens' antioxidative capacity by modulating the expression of key proteins, thereby reducing oxidative stress and inflammatory response levels. This study provides a deeper comprehension of the protective mechanisms of CA and its potential impact on avian health.

Abstract
Natural polychromatic biomaterials (like carminic acid and gardenia yellow) possess coloring merits and functionality, but are instable under light and heat. Self-assembly of gelatin and polychromatic materials could be induced by carnosic acid inclusions, illustrating great potential in food application. Antioxidant properties, pigment retention rates, UV irradiation stability, rheological properties, and physical resistances (oil, ethanol, heat and microwave) of samples were improved by carnosic acid inclusions, owing to the newly formed hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions (UV spectrum, particle size, zeta potential, FTIR, XPS and SEM). The improved properties contributed to the 2D printed pattern stability and the applicability for producing specialized products with high printability and fastness. On the basis of Subtractive Color-Mixing Principle, further three-dimensional dyeing microgel systems were built and modulated; it could functionalize bean paste/carboxymethyl-cellulose food systems, maintain the excellent self-supporting ability & mechanical strength, and promote single/dual-nozzle 3D printing application. Therefore, the self-assembled gelatin/polychromatic materials/carnosic acid microgel samples could not only achieve outstanding 2D printed pattern stability, and could be also promisingly applied in single/dual-nozzle 3D printing for modern innovative, creative food fields.

Abstract
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) is one of the most famous spice plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family as a remarkably beautiful horticultural plant and economically agricultural crop. The essential oil of rosemary has been enthusiastically welcome in the whole world for hundreds of years. Now, it is wildly prevailing as a promising functional food additive for human health. More importantly, due to its significant aroma, food, and nutritional value, rosemary also plays an essential role in the food/feed additive and food packaging industries. Modern industrial development and fundamental scientific research have extensively revealed its unique phytochemical constituents with biologically meaningful activities, which closely related to diverse human health functions. In this review, we provide a comprehensively systematic perspective on rosemary by summarizing the structures of various pharmacological and nutritional components, biologically functional activities and their molecular regulatory networks required in food developments, and the recent advances in their applications in the food industry. Finally, the temporary limitations and future research trends regarding the development of rosemary components are also discussed and prospected. Hence, the review covering the fundamental research advances and developing prospects of rosemary is a desirable demand to facilitate their better understanding, and it will also serve as a reference to provide many insights for the future promotion of the research and development of functional foods related to rosemary.

Abstract
In this study, a composite film was created with the dual goal of prolonging pork shelf life and showing freshness. Hydrogel materials as solid base films were selected from gelatin (G), sodium alginate (SA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) based on their antioxidant activity, water vapor permeability, mechanical properties, as well as their stability, antimicrobial activity, and freshness, which indicates effectiveness when combined with anthocyanins. Furthermore, the effects of several concentrations of red cabbage anthocyanin (R) (3%, 6%, 12%, and 24%) on freshness indicators and bacteriostasis were investigated. The antimicrobial activity of the composite films was evaluated against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus. Likewise, the freshness indicates effectiveness was evaluated for NH3. Considering the mechanical properties, antibacterial ability, freshness indicator effect, and stability of the composite film, CS film combined with 12% R was selected to prepare a dual-functional intelligent film for pork freshness indicator and preservation. By thoroughly investigating the effect of composite film on pork conservation and combining with it KNN, the discriminative model of pork freshness grade was established and the recognition rate of the prediction set was up to 93.3%. These results indicated that CSR film can be used for the creation of active food packaging materials.

Abstract
Rosmarinus officinalis leaves (ROLs) are widely used in the food and cosmetics industries due to their high antioxidant activity and fascinating flavor properties. Carnosic acid (CA) and rosmarinic acid (RA) are regarded as the characteristic antioxidant components of ROLs, and the selective separation of CA and RA remains a significant challenge. In this work, the feasibility of achieving the selective separation of CA and RA from ROLs by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) was studied and compared. The experiments suggested that SPE with CAD-40 macroporous resin as the adsorbent was a good choice for selectively isolating CA from the extracts of ROLs and could produce raw CA with purity levels as high as 76.5%. The LLE with ethyl acetate (EA) as the extraction solvent was more suitable for extracting RA from the diluted extracts of ROLs and could produce raw RA with a purity level of 56.3%. Compared with the reported column chromatography and LLE techniques, the developed SPE-LLE method not only exhibited higher extraction efficiency for CA and RA, but can also produce CA and RA with higher purity.

Abstract
There is growing interest in reducing the number of synthetic products or additives and replacing them with natural ones. The pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries are especially focused on natural and bioactive chemicals isolated from plants or microorganisms. The main challenge here is to develop efficient and ecological methods for their isolation. According to the strategies and rules of sustainable development and green chemistry, green solvents and environmentally friendly technologies must be used. The application of deep eutectic solvents as efficient and biodegradable solvents seems to be a promising alternative to traditional methods. They are classified as being green and ecological but, most importantly, very efficient extraction media compared to organic solvents. The aim of this review is to present the recent findings on green extraction, as well as the biological activities and the possible applications of natural plant ingredients, namely, phenolics, flavonoids, terpenes, saponins, and some others. This paper thoroughly reviews modern, ecological, and efficient extraction methods with the use of deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The newest findings, as well as the factors influencing the efficiency of extraction, such as water content, and hydrogen bond donor and acceptor types, as well as the extraction systems, are also discussed. New solutions to the major problem of separating DESs from the extract and for solvent recycling are also presented.

Abstract
Essential oils from Mediterranean wild plants are widely used, but the hydrodistillation residues produced in parallel with these essential oils are significantly understudied and underexploited. Since there are only fragmentary data in the literature, we have, for the first time, systematically analyzed the chemical composition of the by-products obtained after hydrodistillation of sage, bay laurel, and rosemary leaves, i.e., hydrolates, water residues, and solid residues. The chemical composition of the hydrolates changed compared to their respective essential oils towards the dominance of more hydrophilic, oxygenated compounds, such as camphor in sage, 1,8-cineole in bay laurel, and berbenone in rosemary. However, some compounds, mostly sesquiterpenes, which were present in considerable amounts in essential oils, were absent or only present in very small amounts in the hydrolates. Furthermore, both the water and the solid residues were rich in polyphenols, such as procyanidins in bay laurel and rosmarinic acid in rosemary and sage. In conclusion, we demonstrate the valuable chemical composition of sage, rosemary, and bay laurel hydrodistillation by-products and discuss a wide range of their possible applications.

Abstract
To create genistein particles, a brand-new antisolvent recrystallization technique was employed. The response surface approach was utilized to optimize the single factor test findings, which were acquired via the preliminary tests. The ideal liquid-to-liquid ratio was 9, the solution concentration was 21 mg/mL, the nozzle diameter was 700 μm, the feed rate was 39.65 mL/min, and the homogenization rate was 1500 rpm. The smallest mean particle size measured was 202.782 nm. SEM was used to study the powder's morphology, while thermal analysis and infrared imaging were used to evaluate its characteristics. The homogeneous antisolvent recrystallization method-prepared GMP has a better dissolving rate and stronger antioxidant activity when compared to genistein powder. The antisolvent recrystallization approach used in this study, which uses low-speed homogenizing instead of conventional grinding and homogenizing, can successfully reduce particle size, improve bioavailability, and use less energy. This topic may thus be made popular because it has real-world applications.

Abstract
Acer truncatum Bunge is a versatile, oil-producing, woody tree natively and widely distributed in northern China. In 2011, The People’s Republic of China’s Ministry of Health certified Acer truncatum seed oil (Aoil) as a new food resource. Unsaturated fatty acids account for up to 92% of the entire Aoil. When Aoil is processed or stored, it can easily oxidize. In this study, the effects of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) extract on the oxidation stability of Aoil were analysed from multiple angles. The results of radical scavenging ability, malondialdehyde, and free fatty acid reveal that rosemary crude extract (RCE), rosmarinic acid (RA), and carnosic acid (CA) can significantly inhibit the oxidation of Aoil, and CA has the best oxidative stability for Aoil among the tested components of the crude rosemary. The delayed oxidation ability of CA for Aoil was slightly weaker than that of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), but stronger than that of butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and α-tocopherol (α-T), which was confirmed by microstructures, kinematic viscosity, Aoil weight change, and functional group. Additionally, CA-enriched Aoil had the smallest content of volatile lipid oxidation products. Moreover, lecithin-CA particles were added to enhance the oxidative stability of Aoil. These findings show that CA is a potent antioxidant, capable of successfully preventing Aoil oxidation.

Abstract
A new fluorescent dye (4PBZC) comprising coumarin (C), piperazine (P), and benzimidazole (BZ) was designed, prepared, and complexed to cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) to detect carnosol (CAR), an anti-breast cancer drug, in sub-nanomolar concentrations utilizing the supramolecular indicator displacement assay strategy, the CB7-assisted pK a shift, and the CB7-retarded photoinduced electron transfer process. The host-guest complexation was confirmed by UV-visible absorption, fluorescence, and 1H NMR spectroscopy, which established the binding of 4PBZC to CB7. CB7 preferentially binds the indicator dye (4PBZC) via the protonated BZ residue compared to the neutral BZ one, demonstrated by a higher binding constant of the complex in its di-protonated form, which led to an increase in the pK a of the BZ moiety by ca. 3.0 units after the addition of CB7. In aqueous solution (pH 6), switching the emission signals between 4PBZH+C/CB7 (ON state) and 4PBZC (OFF state) was achieved by displacement of the protonated dye from the cavity of CB7 by the CAR analyte. An efficient sensor was obtained for the sensitive detection of CAR in aqueous solution with a low detection limit of 0.148 ng/mL (0.45 nM) and a linear range from 20 to 627 ng/mL.

Abstract
In this study, daidzein microparticles (DMP) were prepared using an improved ultrasound-assisted antisolvent precipitation method. Preliminary experiments were conducted using six single-factor experiments, and principal component analysis (PCA) was adopted to obtain the three staple elements of the ultrasonic power, solution concentration, and nozzle diameter. The response surface Box-Behnken (BBD) design was used to optimize the level of the above factors. The optimal preparation conditions of the DMP were obtained as follows: the flow rate was 4 mL/min, the concentration of the daidzein solution was 16 mg/mL, the ratio of antisolvent to solvent (liquid-to-liquid ratio) was 9, the nozzle diameter was 300 μm, the ultrasonic power was 180 W (665 W/L), and the system speed was 760 r/min. The minimum average particle size of DMP was 181 ± 2 nm. The properties of daidzein particles before and after preparation were analyzed via scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, Differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, no obvious change in its chemical structure was observed, but crystallinity was reduced. Compared with daidzein powder, DMP has a higher solubility and stronger antioxidant capacity. The above results indicate that the improved method of ultrasonication combined with antisolvent can reduce the size of daidzein particles and has a great potential in practical production.

Abstract
Since the deep cause for the anti-oxidation of carnosic acid (CA) against oleic acid (OA) remains unclear, we focused on exploring the CA inhibition mechanism via a combined experimental and computational study. Atomic charge, total molecular energy, phenolic hydroxyl bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE), the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), and the lowest unoccupied orbital (LUMO) energy were first discussed by the B3LYP/6-31G (d,p) level, a density functional method. A one-step hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) was proposed for the anti-oxidation of CA towards OA, and the Rancimat method was carried out for analyzing the thermal oxidation stability. The results indicate that the two phenolic hydroxyl groups located at C7(O15) and C8(O18) of CA exert the highest activity, and the chemical reaction heat is minimal when HAT occurs. Consequently, the activity of C7(O15) (303.27 kJ/mol) is slightly lower than that of C8(O18) (295.63 kJ/mol), while the dissociation enthalpy of phenol hydroxyl groups is much lower than those of α-CH2 bond of OA (C8, 353.92 kJ/mol; C11, 353.72 kJ/mol). Rancimat method and non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrate that CA outcompetes tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), a synthetic food grade antioxidant, both in prolonging the oxidation induction period and reducing the reaction rate of OA. The Ea (apparent activation energies of reaction) of OA, TBHQ + OA, and CA + OA were 50.59, 57.32 and 66.29 kJ/mol, revealing that CA could improve the Ea and thermal oxidation stability of OA.

Abstract
Background Fresh Gac (Momordica cochinchinensis) fruit is rich in carotenoids, mainly β-carotene and lycopene, but these compounds are sensitive to degradation. Spray drying is used to encapsulate the sensitive β-carotene and lycopene with different materials. Only a few reports of using highly branched cyclodextrin (HBCD) have been published. Additionally, studies of β-carotene and lycopene losses in Gac powders during storage are limited. Therefore, the encapsulation of β-carotene and lycopene of Gac aril with HBCD by spray drying at different inlet temperatures were compared. The shelf life of β-carotene and lycopene during storage was also calculated. Methods The fresh Gac aril was separated and kept frozen before the experiment. Gac aril and water (1:5 w/v) were centrifuged at 8,000 g at 20 °C for 15 min using a high-speed centrifuge (Sorval; Dupont, Wilmington, DE, USA). The supernatant was filtered twice and concentrated until 15° Brix using a rotary evaporator (R-200; Buchi, Flawil, Switzerland). The mixture of concentrated aril extract and highly branched cyclodextrin at 5% (w/v) was dried at three inlet temperatures by a spray dryer (B-290; Buchi, Flawil, Switzerland) with drying air flow rate, compressor air pressure, and feed rate set at 473 L/h, 40 m3/h, and 3 mL/min, respectively . The physicochemical qualities, particle image morphology, and estimated storage time of β-carotene and lycopene were determined. Results Increased inlet temperatures of spray drying decreased the bulk density, β-carotene, and lycopene content of spray-dried powders significantly. The color values of dried powders had significant differences in yellowness (b*) and chroma, but not lightness (L*), redness (a*), and hue when the inlet temperature increased from 160 °C to 180 °C. The maximum reduction of β-carotene and lycopene observed during storage at 55 °C was 90.88% and 91.11% for 33 and 18 days. For β-carotene, the estimated shelf-life (retention of 50% of β-carotene) was 9.9, 48.4, and 91.6 days at 25 °C, 10 °C, and 4 °C. The shelf-life of lycopene was 26, 176, and 357 days at 25 °C, 10 °C, and 4 °C, respectively. HBCD could be potentially used as an encapsulating agent in spray-dried Gac aril, but the shelf-life of β-carotene and lycopene needs to be improved to be useful as a food ingredient.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to evaluate the antioxidant effect of acerola fruit powder, rosemary and licorice extract in caiman meat nuggets containing high amounts of mechanically separated caiman meat (MSCM) during 120 days of frozen storage. Five treatments were prepared: a control without antioxidant (CON), sodium erythorbate at 500 mg/kg (ERY), acerola fruit powder at 500 mg/kg (AFP), with licorice extract at 500 mg/kg (LIE) and rosemary extract at 500 mg/kg (ROE). The addition of natural antioxidants increased color, cohesiveness, and decreased TBARS values. The redness values were higher for LIE and these values were different to the CON. Nuggets with licorice extract had significantly lower TBARS values at the end of the storage period compared to the control. All the treatments were similar in sensory analysis, with good acceptability. These results indicate licorice extract used in caiman meat nuggets containing a high amount of MSCM caiman has the potential to improve quality during frozen storage.

Abstract
Cyclodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase; EC 2.4.1.19) produces cycloamyloses (CAs), which are large cyclic glucans, and subsequently transforms them to α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins. We developed a novel encapsulation process based on the cyclization activity of CGTase and applied it to the formation of CA inclusion complexes with resveratrol (RVT), which has limited bioavailability due to its low water solubility. The encapsulated RVT (CA-RVT) was purified using preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. The water solubility of CA-RVT was 6,000-fold higher than that of RVT. CA-RVT in water demonstrated 98% stability for 1 week at 4 °C. According to radical scavenging activity and anti-inflammatory assays, CA-RVT in aqueous solution exhibited similar activities as an equal amount of RVT in dimethyl sulfoxide, suggesting the limited solubility of RVT can be overcome through CA encapsulation by CGTase, thus enhancing its nutraceutical value as a functional ingredient in the food industry.

Abstract
leaves are popularly used to treat asthma and diabetes. Despite the widespread consumption of this plant, there are few scientific studies regarding its toxicological potential. In order to conduct a thorough study concerning the potential adverse effects, the aim of this study was to assess acute and subacute toxicity tests of crude aqueous extract from C. pachystachya leaves (CAE-Cp) using in vivomodel, as well as in vitro cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and antioxidant activity. In addition, genotoxicity, and cytotoxicity of chlorogenic acid (CGA) and cytotoxicity of isoorientin (ISOO) were also evaluated. The antioxidant activity was verified by DPPH, cytotoxicity using sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay and genotoxicity by comet assay on V79 cells. The phytochemical analysis of CAE-Cp detected flavonoids and tannins, CGA and ISOO as the major compounds utilizing HPLC. The total flavonoid content (6.52 mg/g EQ) and antioxidant activity (EC50 = 62.15 µg/ml) of CAE-Cp were determined. In vitro evaluations with CAE-Cp showed genotoxic effects at 0.31 to 2.5 mg/ml and an expressive cytotoxicity on HT-29 (IC50 = 4.43 µg/ml) cells. CGA was genotoxic against V79 cells at 0.07 mg/ml and cytotoxic against to HT-29 (IC50 = 71.70 µg/ml), OVCAR-3 (IC50 = 80.07 µg/ml), MCF-7 (IC50 = 45.58 µg/ml) and, NCI-H460 (IC50 = 71.89 µg/ml) cancer cell lines. Wistar rats treated with a single dose (2,000 mg/kg) CAE-Cp decreased hemoglobin levels after 14 days, although no significant toxicity was observed in animals after 28 days. In view of the in vitro cytotoxicity and genotoxicity detected, further studies are necessary to establish the safe use of CAE-Cp.

Abstract
Carnosic acid (CA) is a phenolic diterpene with many important biological activities including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties, and anti-proliferative properties. The aim of the present study was to investigate cytotoxic activity, cell cycle, apoptotic, and molecular effects attributed to CA in non-tumoral IMR-90 (human fetal lung fibroblasts), as well as tumoral NCI-H460 (human non-small-cell lung cancer) cell lines. Cell proliferation was evaluated by Real-Time Cell Analysis system, while apoptosis and cell cycle were assessed using flow cytometry. RT-qPCR was used to estimate the relative expression of genes involved in cell cycle regulation, DNA damage and repair, and apoptosis induction. CA inhibited proliferation of IMR-90 and NCI-H460 cells via cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 and G2/M phases, according to the treatment concentration. The mRNA levels of genes encoding cyclins A2, B1, and B2 were downregulated in response to CA treatment of IMR-90 cells. Apoptosis was induced and proapoptotic gene PUMA was upregulated in both cell lines. mRNA levels of genes ATR, CCND1, CHK1, CHK2, MYC, GADD45A, H2AFX, MTOR, TP53, and BCL2, CASP3 were not markedly changed following CA treatments. Although CA exerted antiproliferative activity against NCI-H460 tumor cells, this phytochemical induced toxic effects in non-tumoral cells, and thus needs to be considered carefully prior to pharmacological use therapeutically.

Solubility, Antioxidation, and Oral Bioavailability Improvement of Mangiferin Microparticles Prepared Using the Supercritical Antisolvent Method. Pharmaceutics 2020; 12:pharmaceutics12020090. Abstract
In view of the poor water solubility and low oral bioavailability of mangiferin (MG), in this study, the supercritical antisolvent (SAS) technology was used to prepare mangiferin microparticles (MG MPs) with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent and carbon dioxide as antisolvent, so as to improve its water solubility, antioxidant capacity and oral bioavailability. Four factors affecting the solubility of the MG MPs were investigated by orthogonal design (OAD), including precipitation pressure, precipitation temperature, MG concentration and feeding speed, and the optimal preparation conditions were determined by range and variance analysis (ANOVA). Under the optimal conditions, the spherical MG MPs with an average diameter of 532.8 nm was obtained, and the yield of the powder was about 95.3%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Diffractometry (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermal gravimetric (TG) were used to analyze the characteristics of the MG MPs. The results obtained showed that the chemical structure of the MG did not change before and after supercritical crystallization, but its particle size and crystallinity decreased significantly. The MG MPs had a higher solubility, and was about 4.26, 2.1 and 2.5 times than that of free MG in water, artificial gastric juice (AGJ) and artificial intestinal juice (AIJ), respectively. The dissolution rate of the MG MPs were also obviously higher than that of free MG. Furthermore, the bioavailability of the MG MPs in vivo was about 2.07 times higher than that of the free MG, and its antioxidant capacity was also much higher than that of free MG, which was close to vitamin C.
