Abstract
Deep eutectic solvent (DES) has been recognized as a promising plasticizer for the preparation of biodegradable food packaging films. In addition, DES-plasticized chitosan (CS) films could also serve as a favorable carrier for loading active components. In this work, a ternary composite film was fabricated by plasticizing chitosan with DES and the active ingredient proanthocyanidin (PA) was used as a cross-linking agent. The incorporation of PAs significantly enhanced the toughness, elasticity, and hydrophobicity of the ternary CS-DES-PA composite films. It achieved antioxidant and bacteriostatic functions. In particular, the ternary CS-DES-PA composite films had a thickness of 0.16 ± 0.01 μm, a tensile strength of 2.63 ± 0.48 MPa, and an elongation about 73.22 %. They also have improved water resistance, UV blocking, with a high-water contact angle of 88.4° and a low water swelling of 5 % on the surface of the film. Meanwhile, the PAs in the film could slow down the browning of litchi fruits. This ternary blended film (CS-DES-PA) achieves better compatibility of the active ingredient in the film-forming substrate. It also provides a green and biodegradable packaging material for food packaging.

Abstract
Chitosan is a natural and renewable polysaccharide that can form biopolymers. It is derived from the deacetylation of chitin mainly from crustaceans' shells, but also from fungi and insects. Thanks to unique characteristics such as antimicrobial effects, antioxidant properties or film forming capacities, it has triggered an important amount of research in the last decade about possible applications in industrial fields. The main application field of chitosan is the food industry where it can be used for preservation purposes and shelf-life improvement for fresh food products such as fruits or meat. For beverages, it is used for clarification and fining as well as elimination of spoilage flora in beverages like fruit juices or wine. And in agriculture, it can be used as a plant protection product through different mechanisms like the elicitation of plant defences. The mechanisms of action of chitosan on microorganisms are multiple and complex but revolve mostly around the disturbance of microorganisms' membranes and cell walls resulting in the leakage of cell material. The use of chitosan is still minor but is promising in finding environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic chemicals and plastics. Therefore, its characterization is primordial for the future of sustainable production and preservation processes.

Abstract
The application of natural alternatives as food preservatives has gained much attention due to the escalating negative perception of synthetic preservatives among consumers and the spread of drug-resistance foodborne pathogens. Natural flavonoids have the potential to be employed for food safety due to their antimicrobial properties against a wide range of foodborne pathogenic microorganisms. In this perspective, we reviewed the antimicrobial activities of natural flavonoids, the mechanism of action, as well as their application for food safety and quality. Various strategies for the incorporation of flavonoids into food products were highlighted, including direct addition to food formulations, encapsulation as micro or nanocarriers, and incorporation into edible or active films and coatings. Furthermore, we discussed the current challenges of industrial application of flavonoids, and proposed future trends to enhance their potential as natural preservatives. This review provides a theoretical foundation for the further development and application of flavonoids for food safety.

Abstract
This study developed a kind of PEG-crosslinked O-carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CMC-PEG) with various PEG content for food packaging. The crosslinking agent of isocyanate-terminated PEG was firstly synthesized by a simple condensation reaction between PEG and excess diisocyanate, then the crosslink between O-carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CMC) and crosslinking agent occurred under mild conditions to produce O-CMC-PEG with a crosslinked structure linked by urea bonds. FT-IR and 1H NMR techniques were utilized to confirm the chemical structures of the crosslinking agent and O-CMC-PEGs. Extensive research was conducted to investigate the impact of the PEG content (or crosslinking degree) on the physicochemical characteristics of the casted O-CMC-PEG films. The results illuminated that crosslinking and components compatibility could improve their tensile features and water vapor barrier performance, while high PEG content played the inverse effects due to the microphase separation between PEG and O-CMC segments. The in vitro degradation rate and water sensitivity primarily depended on the crosslinking degree in comparison with the PEG content. Furthermore, caused by the remaining -NH2 groups of O-CMC, the films demonstrated antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. When the PEG content was 6% (medium crosslinking degree), the prepared O-CMC-PEG-6% film possessed optimal tensile features, high water resistance, appropriate degradation rate, low water vapor transmission rate and fine broad-spectrum antibacterial capacity, manifesting a great potential for application in food packaging to extend the shelf life.

Abstract
This study focused on non-covalent complex of myoglobin-chlorogenic acid (Mb-CA) and the changes in conformation, oxidation, and microstructure induced by varying concentrations of CA (10-40 μmol/g Mb). Employing molecular docking and dynamics simulations, further insights into the interaction between Mb and CA were obtained. The findings revealed that different CA concentrations enhanced Mb's thermal stability, while diminishing particle size, solubility, and relative content of metmyoglobin (MetMb%). The optimal interaction occurred at 40 μmol/g Mb. Furthermore, CA exhibited static quenching of Mb, with thermodynamic analysis confirming a 1:1 complex formation. These insights deepen our understanding of interaction between Mb and CA, providing valuable clarity.

Abstract
In this study, a single step in situ sol-gel method was used to syntheses nanocomposite films using chitosan (CS) as the basis material, with the addition of silver oxide nanoparticles (Ag2O) at several weight percentages (5 %, 10 %, and 15 % Ag2O/CS). The structural characteristics of Ag2O/CS films were investigated using a range of analytical techniques. The presence of the primary distinctive peaks of chitosan was verified using FTIR spectra analysis. However, a minor displacement was observed in these peaks due to the chemical interaction occurring with silver oxide molecules. XRD analysis demonstrated a significant increase in the crystallinity of chitosan when it interacted with metal oxide nanoparticles. Furthermore, it is believed that the interaction between silver oxide and the active binding sites of chitosan is responsible for the evenly dispersed clusters shown in the micrographs of the chitosan surface, as well as the random aggregations within the pores. EDS technique successfully identified the presence of distinctive silver signals within the nanocomposite material, indicating the successful absorption of silver into the surface of the polymer. The developed Ag2O/CS nanocomposite showed promising antibacterial activity against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus). Also, Ag2O/CS nanocomposite exhibited marked antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, and Penicillium chrysogenum. The antioxidant activity of the developed nanocomposite films was studied by ABTS radical scavenging. The highest antioxidant and antibacterial properties were achieved by including 15 % silver oxide into the chitosan. Therefore, our finding indicate that chitosan‑silver oxide nanocomposites exhibits significant potential as a viable material for application in several sectors of the food packaging industry.

Abstract
At a time when food safety awareness is increasing, attention is paid not only to food and additives but also to packaging materials. Most current food packaging is usually made of traditional petroleum-based polymeric materials, which are not biodegradable and have adverse effects on the environment and health. In this context, the development of new non-toxic and biodegradable materials for extending the best-before date of food is receiving increasing attention. In addition, additives in packaging materials may migrate outward, resulting in contact with food. For this reason, additives are also seen as a transition from synthetic additives to natural extracts. Active extracts from animals and plants having good antioxidant and antibacterial properties are also beneficial for human health. It is indisputable that active extracts are ideal substitutes for synthetic additives. Polymer packaging materials combined with active extracts not only maintain their original mechanical and optical properties and thermal stability but also endow polymers with new functions to extend the shelf life of food. This review paper provides an overview of this promising natural extract-containing polymer-based active packaging, with a focus on plant essential oils (containing phenolics, monoterpenes, terpene alcohols, terpene ketones, and aldehydes), pigments (procyanidins), vitamins (vitamin B), and peptides (nisin). In particular, this paper covers the research progress of such active extracts, in single or compound forms, combined with diverse polymers (mostly biopolymers) for food packaging applications with particular focus on the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of packaging materials.

Abstract
Tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and is the leading cause of death from infectious diseases in the World. The search for new antituberculosis drugs is a high priority, since several drug-resistant TB-strains have emerged. Many nanotechnology strategies are being explored to repurpose or revive drugs. An interesting approach is to graft antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) to antibiotic-loaded nanoparticles. The objective of the present work was to determine the anti-MTB activity of rifampicin-loaded N-acetylcysteine-chitosan-based nanoparticles (NPs), conjugated with the AMP Ctx(Ile21)-Ha; against clinical isolates (multi- and extensively-drug resistant) and the H37Rv strain. The modified chitosan and drug-loaded NPs were characterized with respect to their physicochemical stability and their antimycobacterial profile, which showed potent inhibition (MIC values <0.977 μg/mL) by the latter. Furthermore, their accumulation within macrophages and cytotoxicity were determined. To understand the possible mechanisms of action, an in silico study of the peptide against MTB membrane receptors was performed. The results presented herein demonstrate that antibiotic-loaded NPs grafted with an AMP can be a powerful tool for revitalizing drugs against multidrug-resistant M. tuberculosis strains, by launching multiple attacks against MTB. This approach could potentially serve as a novel treatment strategy for various long-term diseases requiring extended treatment periods.

Abstract
Herein, the ability of highly porous colorimetric indicators to sense volatile and biogenic amine vapors in real time is presented. Curcumin-loaded polycaprolactone porous fiber mats are exposed to various concentrations of off-flavor compounds such as the volatile amine trimethylamine, and the biogenic amines cadaverine, putrescine, spermidine, and histamine, in order to investigate their colorimetric response. CIELAB color space analysis demonstrates that the porous fiber mats can detect the amine vapors, showing a distinct color change in the presence of down to 2.1 ppm of trimethylamine and ca. 11.0 ppm of biogenic amines, surpassing the limit of visual perception in just a few seconds. Moreover, the color changes are reversible either spontaneously, in the case of the volatile amines, or in an assisted way, through interactions with an acidic environment, in the case of the biogenic amines, enabling the use of the same indicator several times. Finally, yet importantly, the strong antioxidant activity of the curcumin-loaded fibers is successfully demonstrated through DPPH● and ABTS● radical scavenging assays. Through such a detailed study, we prove that the developed porous mats can be successfully established as a reusable smart system in applications where the rapid detection of alkaline vapors and/or the antioxidant activity are essential, such as food packaging, biomedicine, and environmental protection.

Abstract
The characterization and antioxidant ability of Res-loaded MP-CS stabilized Pickering emulsion, and its effects of fat reduction (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) in meat patties on pH, color, texture, cooking yield and antioxidant activity were investigated. Fat substitute using emulsion had no significant effect on pH and cooking yield. The addition of emulsion increased L* value and reduced a* value. a* value of meat patties with resveratrol added were higher than those without resveratrol group. Hardness and chewiness of meat patties with 25% and 100% fat replacement was lower than 50% and 75% fat replacement. The addition of emulsion could improve the network structure of meat patties and enhance oxidative stability. Oxidative stability of meat patties was improved by Res-loaded MP-CS stabilized Pickering emulsion. The results showed that MP-CS stabilized Pickering emulsion had great potential to be used as fat substitute for developing low-fat meat products, and the addition of resveratrol can improve the antioxidant ability of substitute fat meat products.

Abstract
In this work, a multifunctional bilayer film was prepared by solvent casting method. Elderberry anthocyanins (EA) were incorporated into konjac glucomannan (KGM) film as the inner indicator layer (KEA). β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) loaded with oregano essential oil (OEO) inclusion complexes (β-CD@OEO) was prepared and incorporated into chitosan (CS) film as the outer hydrophobic and antibacterial layer (CS-β-CD@OEO). The impacts of β-CD@OEO on the morphological, mechanical, thermal, water vapor permeability and water resistance properties, pH sensitivity, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities of bilayer films were thoroughly evaluated. The incorporation of β-CD@OEO into bilayer films can significantly improve the mechanical properties (tensile strength (TS): 65.71 MPa and elongation at break (EB): 16.81 %), thermal stability, and water resistance (Water contact angle (WCA): 88.15°, water vapor permeability (WVP): 3.53 g mm/m2 day kPa). In addition, the KEA/CS-β-CD@OEO bilayer films showed color variations in acid-base environments, which could be used as pH-responsive indicators. The KEA/CS-β-CD@OEO bilayer films also presented controlled release of OEO, good antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity, which exhibited good potential for the preservation of cheese. To sum up, KEA/CS-β-CD@OEO bilayer films have potential applications in the field of food packaging industry.

Abstract
Burrata is a fresh pasta filata cheese manufactured in Italy. Its demand on the worldwide market is constantly growing, and prolonging its shelf-life is an important challenge for the Italian dairy industry. In the present study, combining a commercial bio-protective starter and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) was evaluated as a strategy to delay the spoilage of product quality. Three experimental samples of burrata were produced by experimental trials at the industrial level and stored for 28 days under refrigerated conditions. Two samples contained the protective starter but were packaged differently (under MAP and immersed in water), and one did not contain the starter and was packaged under MAP. A sample of burrata without a starter and immersed in water was also prepared and used as a control. The combination of MAP and bio-protective starter delayed the degradation of lactose and citric acid, used as indices of microbial activity. In fact, lower counts of Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas were observed in this sample. In contrast, control burrata had the highest level of total Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) at the end of the storage period, because of higher microbial activity. Even though all samples were judged to be unacceptable after 28 days from the sensory point of view, the sample with bio-protective starter under MAP had the best score after 21 days, obtaining a shelf-life extension of about 7 days with respect to control. In conclusion, the combination of MAP and protective starter culture could be an easy way to extend the shelf-life of burrata stored under correct refrigerated conditions.

Abstract
Collagen, a fibrous protein with triple-helical structure, is a good film-forming substrate for food packaging films because collagen films show advantages of biodegradability, high mechanical strength and good water resistance. However, collagen films lack functional activities, which may limit their applications in the field of active packaging. In this work, phenolic acid-grafted-chitosan was blended with collagen to improve the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of collagen films. Gallic acid (GA), ferulic acid (FA) and caffeic acid (CA) were respectively grafted onto chitosan, and the physical properties and functional activities of the collagen/phenolic acids-g-chitosan (CGC, CFC and CCC) films were compared. The prepared films presented varying degrees of yellow color, and exhibited significantly improved UV light blocking capacity, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties due to the function of phenolic acid. Moreover, compared with collagen/chitosan (CC) film, CGC, CFC and CCC films showed higher mechanical strength (69.08-73.79 MPa), higher thermal denaturation temperature (69.4-71.2 °C), and lower water vapor permeability values (2.64-2.98 × 10-12 g m-1 s-1 Pa-1). The properties of collagen/ phenolic acids-g-chitosan films were greatly affected by the type of phenolic acid grafted. CGC film had the best antioxidant property as well as the best mechanical property, thermostability, UV light and water vapor blocking capacity.

Abstract
Apple is an important dietary agent for human and apple polyphenols (AP) are the main secondary metabolites of apples. In this study, the protective effects of AP on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative stress damage in human colon adenocarcinoma Caco-2 cells were investigated by cell viability, oxidative stress change as well as cell apoptosis. Pre-adding AP could significantly increase the survival rate of H2O2-treated Caco-2 cells. Besides, the activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and catalase (CAT) were elevated. While the malondialdehyde (MDA) content which is the major oxidant products of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) reduced after AP treatment. In addition, AP also suppressed the emergence of DNA fragment and decreased the expression of apoptosis-related protein Caspase-3. These results demonstrated that AP could ameliorate H2O2-induced oxidative stress damage in Caco-2 cells, which could serve as a reference for further studies of apple natural active products and deep study of the anti-oxidative stress mechanism.

Abstract
Eco-friendly packaging material with intelligent colorimetric performance has been a requirement for food safety and quality. This work focused on a food packaging material from regenerated cellulose films that added the grape seed extract (GSE) and polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG). FTIR and SEM techniques were employed to prove the compatibility of GSE with cellulose matrix. The composite film showed an enhanced elongation at break (16.61 %) and tensile strength (33.09 MPa). The addition of PEG and GSE also improved the water contact angle of regenerated-cellulose film from 53.8° to 83.8°. Moreover, the composite films exhibited UV-blocking properties while maintaining adequate transparency. The GSE induced the regenerated films with a macroscopic change in color under different pH conditions. Furthermore, the loading of GSE slowed down the decomposition of strawberries and delayed the self-biodegradation compared with the control for more than 3 days and 18 days. The present study showed a regenerated cellulose film with acceptable mechanical and hydrophilia properties, pH-responsiveness, anti-decomposition, and delayed biodegradation performances, indicating a potential color sensor in food packaging.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS) films were developed incorporating peptide HX-12C. The films were studied to determine their microstructures, physical properties, release properties of peptide HX-12C and functional properties. The results indicated that there may be hydrogen bonding interactions between CS and peptide HX-12C, thereby creating a homogeneous internal microstructure and lower crystallinity (10.8-12.8 %). Compared with CS film, CS-HX-12C films displayed lower light transmission, MC (20.8-19.9 %), WVP (8.82-8.59 × 10-11·g·m-1·s-1·Pa-1), OTR (0.015-0.037 cc/(m2.day)) and higher WS (15.7-32.4 %) values. Moreover, controlled-release experiments showed that pH, ionic strength and temperature could all significantly affect the release of peptide HX-12C from the films. Finally, the increase of pH value and TVC and lipid oxidation of fresh pork were delayed due to the treatment with CS-2%HX-12C film. However, incorporating peptide HX-12C into CS films did not improve the mechanical properties of the films and their effects against protein oxidation. Our results suggest that the CS-based antimicrobial packaging films integrated with peptide HX-12C exhibit the potential for fresh pork preservation.

Abstract
A novel alternative to prepare the inulin-procyanidin complex assisted by pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment was explored in this study. Results showed that the optimal condition of PEF treatment enhanced the adsorption rate of procyanidins to inulin from 78.56 to 103.46 μg/mg. Based on well fitted by Redlich-Peterson model and spectral analysis including UV and FT-IR, the interaction between inulin and procyanidin was evidenced to be dominated by hydrogen bonds. The DSC curve and the SEM spectrum displayed better stability of the PEF-treated inulin-procyanidin complex than the untreated complex. The PEF-treated complex had lower solubility but higher water-holding capacity than inulin, which exhibited stronger shear-thinning property and more stable flow behavior referring to rheological analysis. Furthermore, the gel formed from the PEF-treated complex possessed greater hardness, chewiness and viscosity, with no significant effects noted in terms of springiness, cohesiveness and resilience.

This study aims to enhance the stability and bioavailability of nuciferine (NF) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) by loading NF into liposomes and then incorporating the liposomes and EGCG into porous microgels (NFEG-microgel) prepared with chitosan and proanthocyanidin. Analysis of particle size (0.5-3.0 μm), electron microscopy, rheology, stability, and simulated gastrointestinal release confirmed that the prepared microgels had high encapsulation rate and good stability and release characteristics. Intervention experiments were performed by orally administering NFEG-microgel to high-fat diet rats to evaluate its efficacy and regulatory mechanism for blood lipid metabolism. NFEG-microgel intervention significantly reduced the body weight and serum lipid level, and the mechanism was related to the expression regulation of key genes involved in lipid metabolism and miRNAs (miR-126a-5p and miR-30b-5p) in serum extracellular vesicles. In addition, NFEG-microgel improved the diversity of gut microbiota by enriching short-chain fatty acids (SCFA)-producing bacteria and reducing harmful bacteria, suggesting that it can ameliorate lipid metabolism by regulating the intestinal flora community in rats.

Abstract
The 3-(Methylthio) propyl isothiocyanate (MTPITC)-loaded inclusion complex prepared by α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) was incorporated into chitosan (CS) film to fabricate a packaging material for fresh chicken meat preservation. Scanning electron microscope images indicated homogenous dispersion of the MTPITC-α-CD in CS polymer. Fourier-transform infrared and X-ray diffraction techniques revealed that MTPITC-α-CD was incorporated into the CS film matrix by the physical interactions. The introduction of MTPITC-α-CD improved the UV-vis light-blocking ability, with a slight loss of transparency. Although the water solubility and water vapor barrier capacity were not significantly influenced by the addition of MTPITC-α-CD, the antioxidant attribute was significantly enhanced. The CS-MTPITC-α-CD film displayed obvious and sustained suppressive effects against Salmonella typhimurium, with the inhibition zone diameters of 14.7 mm at 12 h and 7.3 mm at 24 h, respectively. Moreover, the quality index analysis indicated that the CS-MTPITC-α-CD film-wrapped fresh chicken, during refrigerated storage, exhibited better preservative efficacy than the control groups, with the total viable counts of 6.5 Log CFU/g, total volatile base nitrogen of 8.4 mg/100 g, pH of 6.6, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances of 0.2 mg/kg, and the sensory score of 5 at day 16. Collectively, these results suggest that CS-MTPITC-α-CD film is a prospective packaging candidate for delaying the quality deterioration of chicken meat.

Abstract
A diluted ethanol orange peel extract was used for sustainable dyeing and functionalization of different fabrics. The extract analysis was performed using UPLC-ESI-MS/MS; its total flavonoid (0.67 g RE/100 g d.w.) and antioxidant (2.81 g GAE/100 g d.w.) contents and antioxidant activity (IC50 of 65.5 µg/mL) were also determined. The extract dyeing performance at various dyebath pH values was evaluated using multifiber fabric. Among six fabrics, extract possessed the ability for dyeing wool, polyamide, and cellulose acetate (at pH 4.5), which color strength (K/S) values increased after washing (9.7–19.8 vs. 11.6–23.2). Extract:water ratio of 20:35 (v/v) was found to be sufficient for achieving satisfactory K/S values (i.e., 20.17, 12.56, and 10.38 for wool, polyamide, and cellulose acetate, respectively) that were slightly changed after washing. The optimal dyeing temperatures for wool, polyamide, and cellulose acetate are 55, 35, and 25 °C, while the equilibrium dye exhaustion at those temperatures was achieved after 45, 120, and 90 min, respectively. The color coordinate measurements revealed that wool and polyamide fabrics are yellower than cellulose acetate, while, compared to polyamide and cellulose acetate, wool is redder. Possible interactions between selected fabrics and extract compounds are suggested. All fabrics possessed excellent antioxidant activity (88.6–99.6%) both before and after washing. Cellulose acetate provided maximum bacterial reduction (99.99%) for Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus, which in the case of Staphylococcus aureus remained unchanged after washing. Orange peel extract could be used for simultaneous dyeing and functionalization of wool and polyamide (excellent antioxidant activity) and cellulose acetate (excellent antioxidant and antibacterial activity) fabrics.

Abstract
In this study, we synthesized nano-microemulsions of calcium carbonate (CaCO3)-encapsulated curcumin (Cur)-Ferulic acid (FA) ester derivatives of diverse mass ratios by using the solution casting approach. The structures, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, physical properties, and potential of hydrogen (pH) sensitivity of these products were examined. Compared with microparticles of CaCO3, those of CaCO3@Cur-FA exhibited excellent antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Response to pH was indicated through the release of Cur-FA from CaCO3@Cur-FA in solutions having different pH values. The results demonstrated that Cur-FA was released more quickly from CaCO3@Cur-FA at pH 5.5 than at pH 7.4. CaCO3@Cur-FA demonstrated good antioxidant capacities through its ability to scavenge 2,2′-amino-di(2-ethyl-benzothiazoline sulphonic acid-6)ammonium salt (ABTS+) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). These activities were three-fold more than those observed in CaCO3 microparticle control groups; additionally, the antimicrobial activity against Aspergillus niger and Escherichia coli increased by 40.5 and 54.6%, respectively. Overall, the microparticles of CaCO3@Cur-FA outperformed Cur-FA in terms of antimicrobial properties by inhibiting the growth of certain zoonotic pathogens.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS) is becoming increasingly popular in food packaging due to its natural degradability and great film-forming properties. Nevertheless, its poor antibacterial properties and inadequate antioxidant properties prevent it from being used effectively. In this study, β-cyclodextrin-epichlorohydrin (β-CD-EP) oligomers were prepared and encapsulated with natural essential oils cinnamaldehyde and thymol, and then the inclusion complexes (IC) were incorporated into chitosan in various contents to afford a series of CS-IC composite films. The impacts of IC on the morphological, mechanical, thermal, and water resistance properties, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of chitosan films, as well as the loading and sustained release behavior of IC, were thoroughly examined. The results turned out that the essential oils were well-loaded with high encapsulation efficiency and showed a significant slow-release effect. It was also found that the tensile strength and the elongation at break decreased with increasing IC contents, while the thermal stability was enhanced. The incorporation of IC dramatically promoted the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the chitosan films towards Gram-positive bacteria. Based on our findings, chitosan films containing essential oils-loaded β-CD-EP oligomers may serve as an effective food packaging material.

Abstract
To maintain the freshness of fruits and to meet environmental and consumer needs, a biobased packaging film with long-lasting antimicrobial activity was developed in this article. Liquefied ball-milled shrimp shell chitin/polyvinyl alcohol (LBSC/PVA) blend films containing varying concentrations (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 wt%) of the β-cyclodextrin/cinnamaldehyde (β-CD/CA) inclusion were prepared and characterized. The association between β-CD and CA and the sustained release behavior of CA were explored. The physicochemical property, antimicrobial activity and food preservation performance of the films were investigated. Results showed that CA was successfully encapsulated into the cavity of CD by host-guest interactions, which greatly improved the sustained release of CA. The 3 wt% β-CD/CA/LBSC/PVA blend film showed optimized mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 41.5 MPa and an elongation at break of 810 %. In addition, the incorporation of β-CD/CA inclusion significantly enhanced the antimicrobial activity and food preservation performance of the blend films. Moreover, the 3 wt% β-CD/CA/LBSC/PVA blend film exhibited evidently longer lasting antimicrobial activity and cherry tomato preservation performance than the 3 wt% CA/LBSC/PVA blend film, further demonstrating the critical role of β-CD in delaying CA release. These novel β-CD/CA/LBSC/PVA blend films may have a potential use in active food packaging.

Abstract
Chitosan-based film incorporated with citric acid was prepared by the casting method for application in a Brazilian matured cheese. Three formulations of cheese were processed, with the intention of evaluating the application of a starter culture and the effect of the film in terms of its physiochemical, microbiological, and sensorial characteristics. It was observed by scanning electron microscopy (sem) analysis that the film has a homogeneous appearance, and the crosslinking between citric acid and chitosan was confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The cheese with chitosan-based film presented lower weight loss (5.2%) and showed antimicrobial activity against aerobic mesophilic bacteria. All samples showed high rates of sensorial acceptability (>79%), with no significant differences between them. It is apparent that the chitosan film maintained the typical cheese characteristics. Therefore, chitosan and citric acid film can be used to improve the characteristics of matured cheese and extend its shelf life.

Abstract
The design of intelligent films for pH-responsive actuators fully constructed from natural biopolymers remains challenging. This study used natural biopolymers to develop a new type of smart and multifunctional chitosan/tannic acid/corn starch (CHT/TA/CS) bilayer films, which can be used for pH-responsive actuators and fruit preservation. We studied the microstructural morphology, physicochemical, antioxidant, antimicrobial properties of the films. Compared with the CHT film, the water vapor permeability (WVP) values of the CHT/TA/CS bilayer films were reduced by 3.1 times, and the tensile strength was increased by 4.6 times. The CHT/TA/CS bilayer films also exhibited high 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) (94.6%) and hydroxyl (OH) (97.5%) radical scavenging activity. The bilayer films had good antimicrobial activity. The CHT/TA/CS bilayer films exhibited different directional deformation behaviors in acid-base solutions and could be used as pH-responsive actuators. By changing the solution's pH, the bilayer films could grab and release heavy objects 21 times heavier than themselves. Furthermore, the CHT/TA/CS bilayer coating prolonged the bananas' storage time from three to six days, and its weight loss was reduced by 14%. The developed CHT/TA/CS bilayer films have potential application in degradable materials, soft robotics fields, and food packaging materials.

Abstract
The leaves and branches of Chimonanthus salicifolius and Chimonanthus zhejiangensis are the base ingredients of Shiliang tea. In this study, proteomics and metabolomics were performed to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying antioxidant activity (AA) in the leaves and branches of the two species. Stress and redox related proteins are differentially expressed among organs. The abundance of isoprenoid pathway-related proteins is higher in leaves while the abundance of phenylpropanoid and flavonoid pathway-related proteins is higher in branches in both species. Metabolomics revealed the flavonoid composition and demonstrated that procyanidins are more abundant in branches. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), and AA are stronger in branches than leaves. Overall, branches might contribute to redox homeostasis through SOD/GSH-PX and flavonoids. Furthermore, the high level of AA of branches might be largely due to their increased accumulation of procyanidins.

Abstract
The chitosan (CS) transparent film has attracted much attention in food and medicine packaging areas due to their biodegradability and good availability. A novel carbon quantum dots compound containing nitrogen and phosphorus (NP-CQDs) was obtained by reacting citric acids, with urea and phytic acids. The density of the film was increased, and the water vapor permeation was reduced by the presence of NP-CQDs. The introduction of 4 wt% NP-CQDs increased the water contact angle of the CS film from 79.2° to 105.8°. The shielding on UV-A and UV-B transmittance was increased with the NP-CQDs loading. The film containing 4 wt% NP-CQDs blocked more than 90.2% UV-A and 96.5% UV-B; however, it only blocked 26.8% visible light. It also exhibited better antibacterial activity to both E. coli and S. aureus than the control CS film. This work provided a feasible way to prepare multifunctional bio-safe film.

Abstract
Current environmental concerns fostered a strong interest in extracting polymers from renewable feedstocks. Chitosan, a second most abundant polysaccharide after cellulose, may prove to be a promising green material owing to its renewability, inherent biodegradablity, natural availability, non-toxicity, and ease of modification. This review is intended to comprehensively overview the recent developments on the isolation of chitosan from chitin, its modification and applications as a reinforcing candidate for food packaging materials, emphasizing the scientific underpinnings arising from its physicochemical properties, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antifungal activities. We review various chitosan-reinforced composites reported in the literature and comprehensively present intriguing mechanical and other functional properties. We highlight the contribution of these mechanically robust and responsive materials to extend the shelf-life and maintain the qualities of a wide range of food commodities. Finally, we assess critical challenges and highlight future opportunities towards understanding the versatile applications of chitosan nanocomposites.

Abstract
Biodegradable and antimicrobial films without antibiotics are of great significance for the application associated with food packaging meanwhile minimizing the negative impact on environments. In this work, cellulose-based films with the surface tailor-constructed with ZnO nanopillars (ZnO NPs@Zn2+/Cel films) were prepared via chemical crosslinking in conjunction with a hydrothermal process for in-situ growth of ZnO NPs. As a packaging material, ZnO NPs@Zn2+/Cel films possess excellent mechanical properties, oxygen and water vapor barrier, food preservation, biodegradability and low Zn2+ migration. Moreover, ZnO NPs@Zn2+/Cel films show remarkable antimicrobial activity, especially for Staphylococcus aureus (gram-positive bacteria) and Escherichia coli (gram-negative bacteria). The antimicrobial mechanism of ZnO NPs@Zn2+/Cel films is studied using the controlled variable method, and results showed that the film without UV pretreatment killed bacterial cells mainly by mechanical rupture, while the film with UV pretreatment killed bacterial cells mainly via the synergistic effect of photocatalytic oxidation and mechanical rupture.

Abstract
Condensed tannins (CT) have been the focus of increasing interest in the last years as a result of their potent biological properties, which have prompted their use in the food and feed sector as functional ingredients. The possible exploitation of these compounds as multifunctional additives for the implementation of active food packaging has also been recently appreciated. In this perspective, an overview of the structural features, accessible sources, methods of analysis, and functional properties of CT is provided, with the aim of critically emphasizing the opportunities offered by this widespread class of natural phenolic compounds for the rational design of multifunctional and sustainable food packaging materials.

Abstract
Antioxidant activity is an important feature for food contact materials such as packaging, aiming to preserve freshness and retard food spoilage. Common bioactive agents are highly susceptible to various forms of degradation; therefore, protection is required to maintain functionality and bioavailability. Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), a biodegradable GRAS labeled polymer, was used in this study for encapsulation of α-tocopherol antioxidant, a major component of vitamin E, in the form of electrospun fibers. Rheological properties of the fiber forming solutions, which determine the electrospinning behavior, were correlated with the properties of electrospun fibers, e.g., morphology and surface properties. Interactions through hydrogen bonds were evidenced between the two components. These have strong effect on structuration of macromolecular chains, especially at low α-tocopherol amounts, decreasing viscosity and elastic modulus. Intra-molecular interactions in PCL strengthen at high α-tocopherol amounts due to decreased solvation, allowing good structural recovery after cease of mechanical stress. Morphologically homogeneous electrospun fibers were obtained, with ~6 μm average diameter. The obtained fibers were highly hydrophobic, with fast release in 95% ethanol as alternative simulant for fatty foods. This induced good in vitro antioxidant activity and significant in vivo reduction of microbial growth on cheese, as determined by respirometry. Therefore, the electrospun fibers from PCL entrapping α-tocopherol as bioactive agent showed potential use in food packaging materials.

Abstract
Controlling Listeria in food is a major challenge, especially because it can persist for years in food processing plants. The best option to control this pathogen is the implementation of effective cleaning and disinfection procedures that guarantee the safety and quality of the final products. In addition, consumer trends are changing, being more aware of the importance of food safety and demanding natural foods, minimally processed and free of chemical additives. For this reason, the current consumption model is focusing on the development of preservatives of natural origin, from plants or microorganisms. In sum, this study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial effectiveness of a citrus extract formulation rich in flavonoids against several L. monocytogenes and L. innocua strains, using in vitro test (agar diffusion test, minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and time-kill curves) and challenge test in food trials (carne mechada, salami, fresh salmon, lettuce, brine, and mozzarella cheese). The results presented in this work show that citrus extract, at doses of 5 and 10%, had a relevant antimicrobial activity in vitro against the target strains tested. Besides this, citrus extract applied on the surface of food had a significant antilisterial activity, mainly in carne mechada and mozzarella cheese, with reductions of up to eight logarithmic units with respect to the control. These results suggest that citrus extract can be considered a promising tool to improve the hygienic quality of ready-to-eat foods.

Abstract
Biofilm composition from fish myofibrillar protein (FMP) and chitosan solution (CS) incorporated with rosemary extract (RE) was developed and applied to monitor the freshness of fish fillets. The effects of different concentrations of RE as well as physical, mechanical, structural and functional properties of FMP/CS films were investigated. Films containing RE showed reduced water solubility and water vapor permeability and enhanced tensile strength and elongation at break. Results also showed good compatibility of the components and good dispersion of RE in the matrix. However, the content of RE (0.2%, v/v) added in the composite films produced aggregations and had negative effects on their film-forming properties. The antioxidant capacity of composite films was related to the level of RE and demonstrated by the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging assay. Chilled grass carp fillets wrapped with different films to evaluate the preservative effect. Results of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, pH value, Free amino acid and total volatile basic nitrogen indicated that FMP/CS/RE composite film could protect the fish fillet well and inhibit the lipid oxidation. The developed FMP/CS/RE composite films possess the potential to be applied as edible films in the food packaging industry and food cold chain transportation.

Abstract
Being credited with the most extensively studied polysaccharide polymer and promising candidate for versatile applications, chitosan has proved to be a standalone material with loads of diversified properties in various structural forms such as blends and composites. Considering the abundance of this biopolymer and its non-toxic nature, exploiting chitosan offers two-folded benefits – environment friendliness and fabrication as per the need. Alkaline deacetylation of chitin produces chitosan as a polymer that can be tuned to a great extent as per the requirement by altering the degree of deacetylation (DDA) and molecular weight (MW). This biopolymer has been widely investigated for potential application in the food and biomedical fields due to its antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. Chitosan based composite films incorporated with different natural extracts have shown significant enhancement in the physical and biological activities as reported by different studies. The current study reviews recent developments and investigations of chitosan based biocomposite films incorporated with different natural extracts emphasizing on the improvement of physical and biological properties and its applications.

Abstract
In recent years, harmful microorganisms in water pose great harm to ecological environment and human health. To solve this problem, epsilon-poly-l-lysine (EPL) grafted cellulose beads were prepared via 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) mediated oxidation and carbodiimide mediated cross-linking reaction. Hydroxyl groups on C6 of cellulose were oxidized to carboxyl groups by TEMPO and grafting reaction was achieved between newly formed carboxyl groups of cellulose and amino of EPL. The beads were characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD and TGA. The crystalline form of cellulose transformed from cellulose I to cellulose II after being dissolved and regenerated. The grafted cellulose beads showed good antibacterial activities against Gram-negative Escherichia coli, Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris with 10 h. The beads could be biodegraded in soil after 28 days. It is expected that the bio-based composite beads could have potential applications in water purification and food treatment fields.

Development of Chitosan/Peptide Films: Physical, Antibacterial and Antioxidant Properties. COATINGS 2020. Abstract
Chitosan/peptide films were prepared by incorporating peptides (0.4%, w/v) from soy, corn and caseins into chitosan films. The presence of peptides significantly affected the physical, antibacterial and antioxidative properties of chitosan films. Among these films, those containing corn peptide showed the best water vapor barrier properties, and the tensile strength and elongation at break increased to 24.80 Mpa and 23.94%, respectively. Characterization of surface hydrophobicity and thermal stability suggested the strongest intermolecular interactions between corn peptides and chitosan. Moreover, films containing casein peptides showed the highest antibacterial activity and radical scavenging activity. The DPPH scavenging rate of films containing casein peptides reached 46.11%, and ABTS scavenging rate reached 66.79%. These results indicate the chitosan/peptide films may be promising food packaging materials.
