Abstract
Controlling bioactive ingredients release by modulating the 3D network structure of cross-linked hydrogels is important for functional food development. Hereby, oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) with varying aldehyde contents was formed by periodate oxidation of sodium alginate (SA) with different β-d-mannuronic acid (M) and α-l-guluronic acid (G) ratios (M/G = 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1) and its structure was characterized. Moreover, hydrogels were prepared via Schiff base and electrostatic interactions between quaternized chitosan (QCS) and OSA. The properties of hydrogels such as microstructure, thermal stability, swelling and controlled release were investigated. The results showed that OSA with M/G = 1:2 had the highest content of aldehyde groups, and the hydrogel formed by it and QCS had higher thermal stability and a denser network structure with the lowest equilibrium swelling rate, which could better control the release of curcumin. Additionally, it had good self-healing and can recover rapidly after the rupture of its network structure.

Abstract
Diabetic wounds are a significant clinical challenge. Developing effective antibacterial dressings is crucial for preventing wound ulcers caused by bacterial infections. In this study, a self-healing antibacterial hydrogel (polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-polylysine-gum arabic, PLG hydrogels) with near-infrared photothermal response was prepared by linking PVA and a novel polysaccharide-amino acid compound (PG) through borate bonding combined with freeze-thaw cycling. Subsequently, the hydrogel was modified by incorporating inorganic nanoparticles (modified graphene oxide (GM)). The experimental results showed that the PLGM3 hydrogels (PLG@GM hydrogels, 3.0 wt%) could effectively kill bacteria and promote diabetic wound tissue healing under 808-nm near-infrared laser irradiation. Therefore, this hydrogel system provides a new idea for developing novel dressings for treating diabetic wounds.

Abstract
The shelf life of beef is shortened by microbial infection, which limits its supply in the market. Active packaging film is expected to overcome this difficulty. In this study, an antibacterial/antioxidant SS-ε-PL-TA biocomposite film made by soy protein isolate/sodium alginate/ε-polylysine/tannic acid was designed and prepared. Due to the formation of hydrogen bonds and enhanced hydrophobic interactions, the biocomposite film showed enhanced mechanical property. Tensile strength increased from 22.8 ± 2.59 MPa to 64.34 ± 6.22 MPa, and elongation at break increased from 7.70 ± 1.07 % to 13.98 ± 0.22 %. The composite film displayed excellent antibacterial activity owing to the damage to cell membranes and biofilms of bacteria. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity also significantly increased (DPPH ∙ scavenging activity was 78.0 %). The shelf life of beef covered with the SS-ε-PL-TA film was extended by 3 days compared to the control group by decreasing lipid oxidation and inhibiting bacterial growth, showing a good application potential in food packaging.

Abstract
In this study, Polycaprolactone (PCL)/Yam Polysaccharide (YP) fiber membranes loaded the ultrasound-mediated assembly of 2-Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD)/Epicatechin gallate (ECG) inclusion complexes were prepared by electrospinning technology for food packaging. Morphology, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction results showed that the inclusion complexes were successfully assembled. With the addition of inclusion complexes, the average diameter of the fibers increased from 2480.96 to 10179.12 nm, the crystallinity decreased, the thermal stability improved, the hydrophilicity enhanced, and the water vapor permeability enhanced. Meanwhile, thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry results showed that the inclusion complexes formed hydrogen bonds between the fibers, which improved the thermal stability, but the mechanical behavior suffered a certain loss. In addition, the fiber membrane could continuously release ECG within 240 h, which showed excellent antibacterial effects both in vitro and in vivo. These results indicated that the fiber film developed based on electrospinning had a broad application prospect in food packaging.

Abstract
Alginate, a polyuronic biopolymer composed of mannuronic and guluronic acid units, contain hydroxyl and carboxyl groups as targeting modification sites to obtain structures with new and/or improved biological properties. The copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) is a versatile click reaction for polymer functionalization, but it typically requires a "pre-click" modification to introduce azide or alkyne groups. Here, we described a straightforward chemical path to selectively modify alginate carboxyl groups producing versatile azido derivatives through N-acylation using 3-azydopropylamine. The resulting azide-functionalized polysaccharides underwent click chemistry to yield amino derivatives, confirmed by NMR and FTIR analyses. The 1H NMR spectrum reveals a characteristic triazole group signal at 8.15 ppm. The absence of the azide FTIR band for all amino derivatives, previously observed for the N-acylation products, indicated reaction success. Antibacterial and antioxidant assessments revealed that the initial polysaccharide lacks E. coli inhibition, while the click chemistry-derived amine products exhibit growth inhibition at 5.0 mg/mL. Lower molecular weight derivatives demonstrate superior DPPH scavenging ability, particularly amino-derivatives (24-33 % at 1.2 mg/mL). This innovative chemical pathway offers a promising strategy for developing polysaccharide structures with enhanced properties, demonstrating potential applications in various fields.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of nisin combined with ε-polylysine on microorganisms and the refrigerated quality of fresh-cut jackfruit. After being treated with distilled water (control), nisin (0.5 g/L), ε-polylysine (0.5 g/L), and the combination of nisin (0.1 g/L) and ε-polylysine (0.4 g/L), microporous modified atmosphere packaging (MMAP) was carried out and stored at 10 ± 1°C for 8 days. The microorganisms and physicochemical indexes were measured every 2 days during storage. The results indicated that combined treatment (0.1 g/L nisin, 0.4 g/L ε-polylysine) had the best preservation on fresh-cut jackfruit. Compared with the control, combined treatment inhibited microbial growth (total bacterial count, mold and yeast), reduced the weight loss rate, respiratory intensity, polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase activities, and maintained higher sugar acid content, firmness, and color. Furthermore, it preserved higher levels of antioxidant compounds, reduced the accumulation of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide, thereby reducing oxidative damage and maintaining high nutritional and sensory qualities. As a safe application of natural preservatives, nisin combined with ε-polylysine treatment has great application potential in the fresh-cut jackfruit industry.

Abstract
Unique benzopyridone cyanoacetates (BCs) as new type of promising broad-spectrum antibacterial candidates were discovered with large potential to combat the lethal multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. Many prepared BCs showed broad antibacterial spectrum with low MIC values against the tested strains. Some highly active BCs exhibited rapid sterilization capacity, low resistant trend and good predictive pharmacokinetic properties. Furthermore, the highly active sodium BCs (NaBCs) displayed low hemolysis and cytotoxicity, and especially octyl NaBC 5g also showed in vivo potent anti-infective potential and appreciable pharmacokinetic profiles. A series of preliminary mechanistic explorations indicated that these active BCs could effectively eliminate bacterial biofilm and destroy membrane integrity, thus resulting in the leakage of bacterial cytoplasm. Moreover, their unique structures might further bind to intracellular DNA, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV through various direct noncovalent interactions to hinder bacterial reproduction. Meanwhile, the active BCs also induced bacterial oxidative stress and metabolic disturbance, thereby accelerating bacterial apoptosis. These results provided a bright hope for benzopyridone cyanoacetates as potential novel multitargeting broad-spectrum antibacterial candidates to conquer drug resistance.

Abstract
The packaging of food plays a crucial role in food preservation worldwide. However, traditional packaging systems are passive layers with weak efficiency in protecting the food quality. Therefore, packaged foods are gradually spoiled due to the oxidation and growth of microorganisms. Additionally, most of the commercial packaging films are made of petroleum-based materials which raise environmental concerns. Accordingly, the development of eco-friendly natural-derived active packaging systems has increased the attention of scientists. Cellulose as the most abundant polysaccharide on earth with high biocompatibility, no toxicity, and high biodegradability has extensively been applied for the fabrication of packaging films. However, neat cellulose-based films lack antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Therefore, neat cellulose-based films are passive films with weak food preservation performance. Active films have been developed by incorporating antioxidants and antimicrobial agents into the films. In this review, we have explored the latest research on the fabrication of antimicrobial/antioxidant cellulose-based active packaging films by incorporating natural extracts, natural polyphenols, nanoparticles, and microparticles into the cellulose-based film formulations. We categorized these types of packaging films into two main groups: (i) blend films which are obtained by mixing solutions of cellulose with other soluble antimicrobial/antioxidant agents such as natural extracts and polyphenols; and (ii) composite films which are fabricated by dispersing antimicrobial/antioxidant nano- or microfillers into the cellulose solution. The effect of these additives on the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the films has been explained. Additionally, the changes in the other properties of the films such as hydrophilicity, water evaporation rate, and mechanical properties have also been briefly addressed.

Abstract
Background: Applying 3D printed bioink to bone tissue engineering is an emerging technology for restoring bone tissue defects. This study aims to evaluate the application of 3D printing bioink in bone tissue engineering from 2010 to 2022 through bibliometric analysis, and to predict the hotspots and developing trends in this field. Methods: We retrieved publications from Web of Science from 2010 to 2022 on 8 January 2023. We examined the retrieved data using the bibliometrix package in R software, and VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used for visualizing the trends and hotspots of research on 3D printing bioink in bone tissue engineering. Results: We identified 682 articles and review articles in this field from 2010 to 2022. The journal Biomaterials ranked first in the number of articles published in this field. In 2016, an article published by Hölzl, K in the Biofabrication journal ranked first in number of citations. China ranked first in number of articles published and in single country publications (SCP), while America surpassed China to rank first in multiple country publications (MCP). In addition, a collaboration network analysis showed tight collaborations among China, America, South Korea, Netherlands, and other countries, with the top 10 major research affiliations mostly from these countries. The top 10 high-frequency words in this field are consistent with the field's research hotspots. The evolution trend of the discipline indicates that most citations come from Physics/Materials/Chemistry journals. Factorial analysis plays an intuitive role in determining research hotspots in this sphere. Keyword burst detection shows that chitosan and endothelial cells are emerging research hotspots in this field. Conclusion: This bibliometric study maps out a fundamental knowledge structure including countries, affiliations, authors, journals and keywords in this field of research from 2010 to 2022. This study fills a gap in the field of bibliometrics and provides a comprehensive perspective with broad prospects for this burgeoning research area.

Abstract
Constructing biodegradable food packaging with good mechanics, gas barrier and antibacterial properties to maintain food quality is still challenge. In this work, mussel-inspired bio-interface emerged as a tool for constructing functional multilayer films. Konjac glucomannan (KGM) and tragacanth gum (TG) with physical entangled network are introduced in the core layer. Cationic polypeptide ε-polylysine (ε-PLL) and chitosan (CS) producing cationic-π interaction with adjacent aromatic residues in tannic acid (TA) are introduced in the two-sided outer layer. The triple-layer film mimics the mussel adhesive bio-interface, where cationic residues in outer layers interact with negatively charged TG in the core layer. Furthermore, a series of physical tests showed excellent performance of triple-layer film with great mechanical properties (tensile strength (TS): 21.4 MPa, elongation at break (EAB): 7.9 %), UV-shielding (almost 0 % UV transmittance), thermal stability, water, and oxygen barrier (oxygen permeability (OP): 1.14 × 10-3 g/m s Pa and water vapor permeability (WVP): 2.15 g mm/m2 day kPa). In addition, the triple-layer film demonstrated advanced degradability, antimicrobial functions, and presented good moisture-proof performance for crackers, which can be potentially applied as dry food packaging.

Abstract
Renewable polysaccharide feedstocks are of interest in bio-based food packaging, coatings and hydrogels. Their physical properties often need to be tuned by chemical modification, e.g. by oxidation using periodate, to introduce carboxylic acid, ketone or aldehyde functional groups. The reproducibility required for application on an industrial scale, however, is challenged by uncertainty about the composition of product mixtures obtained and of the precise structural changes that the reaction with periodate induces. Here, we show that despite the structural diversity of gum arabic, primarily rhamnose and arabinose subunits undergo oxidation, whereas (in-chain) galacturonic acids are unreactive towards periodate. Using model sugars, we show that periodate preferentially oxidises the anti 1,2-diols in the rhamnopyranoside monosaccharides present as terminal groups in the biopolymer. While formally oxidation of vicinal diols results in the formation of two aldehyde groups, only traces of aldehydes are observed in solution, with the main final products obtained being substituted dioxanes, both in solution and in the solid state. The substituted dioxanes form most likely by the intramolecular reaction of one aldehyde with a nearby hydroxyl group, followed by hydration of the remaining aldehyde to form a geminal diol. The absence of significant amounts of aldehyde functional groups in the modified polymer impacts crosslinking strategies currently attempted in the preparation of renewable polysaccharide-based materials.

Abstract
Agar benzoate (AB) with different degrees of substitution (DS) was synthesized by the esterification of agar and benzoic anhydride in aqueous solution. The DS could be regulated by adjusting composition ratio, pH, and temperature. Its chemical structure was determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). 13C NMR spectrum of the AB suggested the main substitution occurred at the C-6 in the d-galactopyranose. Cryo-scanning electron microscopy (Cryo-SEM) showed that the aperture of AB was larger than that of agar. The thermal performance of AB decreased slightly, but this did not affect its performance. AB showed the highest relative antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, S. aureus and Alternaria alternata, reaching 100 % (AB 20 g/L), 100 % (AB 40 g/L) and 19.35 % (7 d incubation), respectively. Moreover, the obtained AB possessed good emulsion stability. These antibacterial AB have broad application prospects in the field of fruit and vegetable preservation.

Abstract
A sustainable and efficient nanobentonite@sodium alginate@oleylamine (Nbent@Alg@OA) nanocomposite has been successfully synthesized via coating reaction of nanobentonite (Nbent) with alginate (Alg) and oleylamine (OA). The nanocomposite has been characterized and examined for the adsorption of 60Co(II) and 152+154Eu(III) radionuclides from simulated radioactive waste solution. FT-IR, XRD, SEM, and HR-TEM techniques have been applied to confirm the structural and morphological characteristics of the Nbent@Alg@OA nanocomposite. The effects of various parameters, such as pH of the medium, initial concentration of the radionuclides, contact time, and temperature on the adsorption of 60Co(II) and 152+154Eu(III) radionuclides were investigated by the batch adsorption technique. The results revealed that the optimum pH values for the adsorption of 152+154Eu (III) and 60Co (II) radionuclides were 4 and 5, respectively. The adsorption capacity of 152+154Eu(III) (65.6219 mg/g) was found greater than that of 60Co(II) (47.3469 mg/g). The adsorption process was found to be well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, the equilibrium isotherm evaluation revealed that the Langmuir model was adequately matched with the adsorption data. According to the thermodynamic characteristics, the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. Regeneration and reuse of Nbent@Alg@OA nanocomposite confirmed that the recycled nanocomposite was sufficiently efficient in several successive practical applications.

Abstract
New antibacterial 3-(aminothiazolyl)quinolones (ATQs) were designed and efficiently synthesized to counteract the growing multidrug resistance in animal husbandry. Bioactive assays manifested that N,N-dicyclohexylaminocarbonyl ATQ 10e and methyl ATQ 17a, respectively, showed better antibacterial behavior against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa than reference drug norfloxacin. Notably, highly active ATQ 17a with low hemolysis, negligible mammalian cytotoxicity, and good pharmacokinetic properties displayed low trends to induce resistance and synergistic combinations with norfloxacin. Preliminary mechanism exploration implied that representative ATQ 17a could inhibit the formation of biofilms and destroy bacterial membrane integrity, further binding to intracellular DNA and DNA gyrase to hinder bacterial DNA replication. ATQ 17a could also induce the production of excess reactive oxygen species and reduce bacterial metabolism to accelerate bacterial death. These results provided a promise for 3-(aminothiazolyl)quinolones as new potential multitargeting antibacterial agents to treat bacterial infection of animals.

Abstract
Pathogenic bacterial infection is the most frequent wound complication, which has become a major clinical and healthcare challenge in wound management worldwide, leading to impaired healing processes, the risk of amputation, and even death. Here, collagen-based nanocomposite dressings (APZC) with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity are developed to promote the infected full-thickness wound healing. Short rod-like shaped ZnO NPs are synthesized and then coated with polydopamine (PDA) to obtain PDA coated ZnO NPs (PDA@ZnO NPs). Afterward, PDA@ZnO NPs are conjugated on the backbone of a collagen chain, and the obtained collagen-PDA@ZnO NPs conjugate is crosslinked by dialdehyde sodium alginate to fabricate APZC dressings. PDA@ZnO NPs show well dispersibility and are uniformly incorporated into the collagen matrix. APZC dressings have interconnected microporous structure and great physicochemical properties, besides good blood coagulation performance and well cytocompatibility. APZC dressings demonstrate long-lasting and excellently broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, which can relieve the inflammatory reaction by killing pathogenic bacteria and induce the generation of blood vessels and the orderly deposition of collagen in the wound site, thus promoting infected full-thickness wound healing without obvious scar formation. Overall, the functionalized collagen-based nanocomposite dressings have great potential in the clinical treatment against bacteria-associated wound infection.

Abstract
The present study mainly focused on the effects of the conjugates of PL-dextran produced through the Maillard reaction on the quality and storage stability of chicken gel for 5 days at 4 ℃. According to the results of the texture profile, water retention capacity (WRC), low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF NMR), aerobic plate count (APC), and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVBN), ε-polylysine (PL) could improve chicken gel storage stability while decreasing the quality of protein gels (p < 0.05). Additionally, adding dextran with high or low molecular weight could significantly increase the quality of gel during storage (p < 0.05), whereas decreased storage stability could be obtained (p < 0.05). In general, conjugates formed by PL and dextran with high molecular weight were beneficial for quality maintenance. In comparison, the polymers produced from the low molecular weight of dextran could modify the storage stability of gels. Adding conjugates of dextran and PL benefited the structure formation of protein gel, while PL would retain part of antibacterial activity when crosslinked with dextran. Therefore, it could be concluded that the quality improvement effect of PL-dextran addition on gel quality was greater than its antibacterial effect, which would impact the formulation design of novel emulsion-type meat products.

Abstract
There are several problems with common starch films, including strong water absorption and poor mechanical properties. To create a better starch film, octenyl succinate cassava starch ester (OSCS) was first blended with chitosan and nano ZnO to prepare an OSCS/CS/ZnO film. Then, the film was supplemented with different concentrations of ε-PL as a bacteriostatic agent to prepare a film that would resist bacterial invasion. The mechanical properties, barrier properties, optical properties, and color of the modified starch antibacterial films were investigated, and finally the antibacterial properties and cytotoxicity were tested. The results demonstrated that the modified starch antibacterial film had good mechanical properties, improved surface hydrophobicity, and had a UV-blocking effect. The modified starch antibacterial film with ε-PL of 8% had stable and long-lasting antibacterial properties, stable release, and good cytocompatibility. An active packaging material was successfully prepared using ε-PL and had a strong preservative effect on food.

Abstract
Wound repair remains a huge clinical challenge, which can cause bleeding, infection, and patient death. In our current research, a bioactive, injectable, multifunctional composite hydrogel doped with nanospheres was prepared with antibacterial and angiogenesis-promoting functions for the treatment of wounds. Amino groups in ε-polylysine (ε-EPL) undergo dynamic Schiff base reaction cross-linking with oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHA), and F127 exhibits unique temperature sensitivity to form an injectable thermosensitive hydrogel (FHE10), which can form a hydrogel to cover the wound at body temperature. Nanospheres (PNs) prepared using poly (glyceryl-sebacate-acrylate) (PGSA) were loaded into hydrogels (FHE10) for promoting wound repair. The prepared FHE10 exhibited rapid gelation, good injectable abilities, and showed resistance to the flourish of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). In vitro investigations showed that FHE10 had good hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. FHE10@PNs exhibited good proliferation, migration, and tube formation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and human foreskin fibroblasts (HFF-1). Furthermore, FHE10@PNs significantly promoted reepithelialization and collagen deposition as well as micro-vascularization compared with the use of FHE10 or PNs alone, thereby accelerating the repair of wounds. In general, this study demonstrated that the multifunctional injectable composite hydrogel showed great potential in wound treatment.

Abstract
Preparation of modified bio-based starch film by casting method. Mechanism characterization of modified bio-based starch film. Modified bio-based starch film has preservation effect on sweet cherry.
This study aimed to synthesize packaging films using bioactive ingredients. The composite film was prepared by blending octenyl succinate cassava starch ester (OSCS) with chitosan (CS) nano-ZnO and then adding ε-polylysine (ε-PL). The study also explored the effect of different concentrations of ε-PL on OSCS/CS/ZnO films. Fourier infrared spectroscopyand fluorescence microscopy revealed that the composite film was formed by both hydrogen bonding and a Schiff base reaction. The diffraction peaks of the original materials in X-ray diffraction disappeared after film formation, indicating good miscibility between the materials. Scanning electron microscope showed that the density of its structure increased with increasing the ε-PL content. The thermogravimetric analysis showed that the addition of ε-PL improved the thermal stability of the composite film to some extent. When used in cherry preservation, the bio-based modified starch film effectively reduced cherry decay, stem dryness, and weight loss, maintained surface color, and increased the soluble solid content.
