Abstract
An ultra-sensitive fluorescent biosensor based on CDs/QDs@ZIF-8 and microfluidic fluidized bed was developed for rapid and ultra-sensitive detection of multiple target bacteria. The zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) act as the carrier to encapsulate three kinds of fluorescence signal molecules from the CDs/QDs@ZIF-8 signal amplification system. Besides, three kinds of target pathogenic bacteria were automatically, continuously, and circularly captured by the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in the microfluidic fluidized bed. The neutral Na2EDTA solution was the first time reported to not only dissolve the ZIF-8 frameworks from the MNPs-bacteria-CDs/QDs@ZIF-8 sandwich complexes, but also release the CDs/QDs from sandwich complexes with no loss of fluorescence signal. Due to the advantages of signal amplification and automated sample pretreatment, the proposed fluorescent biosensor can simultaneously detect Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella paratyphi A, and Salmonella paratyphi B as low as 101 CFU/mL within 1.5 h, respectively. The mean recovery in spiked milk samples can reach 99.18%, verifying the applicability of this biosensor in detecting multiple bacteria in real samples.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Gut microbes pose challenges like colon inflammation, deadly diarrhea, antimicrobial resistance dissemination, and chronic disease onset. Development of early, rapid and specific diagnosis tools is essential for improving infection control. Point-of-care testing (POCT) systems offer rapid, sensitive, low-cost and sample-to-answer methods for microbe detection from various clinical and environmental samples, bringing the advantages of portability, automation, and simple operation. AREAS COVERED Rapid detection of gut microbes can be done using a wide array of techniques including biosensors, immunological assays, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and molecular biology. Inclusion of Internet of Things, machine learning, and smartphone-based point-of-care applications is an important aspect of POCT. In this review, the authors discuss various fast diagnostic platforms for gut pathogens and their main challenges. EXPERT OPINION Developing effective assays for microbe detection can be complex. Assay design must consider factors like target selection, real-time and multiplex detection, sample type, reagent stability and storage, primer/probe design, and optimizing reaction conditions for accuracy and sensitivity. Mitigating these challenges requires interdisciplinary collaboration among scientists, clinicians, engineers, and industry partners. Future efforts are essential to enhance sensitivity, specificity, and versatility of POCT systems for gut microbe detection and quantification, advancing infectious disease diagnostics and management.

Abstract
Food contamination is a global concern, particularly in developing countries. Two main types of food contaminants-chemical and biological-are common problems that threaten human health. Therefore, rapid and accurate detection methods are required to address the threat of food contamination. Conventional methods employed to detect these two types of food contaminants have several limitations, including high costs and long analysis time. Alternatively, microfluidic technology, which allows for simple, rapid, and on-site testing, can enable us to control food safety in a timely, cost-effective, simple, and accurate manner. This review summarizes advances in microfluidic approaches to detect contaminants in food. Different detection methods have been applied to microfluidic platforms to identify two main types of contaminants: chemical and biological. For chemical contaminant control, the application of microfluidic approaches for detecting heavy metals, pesticides, antibiotic residues, and other contaminants in food samples is reviewed. Different methods including enzymatic, chemical-based, immunoassay-based, molecular-based, and electrochemical methods for chemical contaminant detection are discussed based on their working principle, the integration in microfluidic platforms, advantages, and limitations. Microfluidic approaches for foodborne pathogen detection, from sample preparation to final detection, are reviewed to identify foodborne pathogens. Common methods for foodborne pathogens screening, namely immunoassay, nucleic acid amplification methods, and other methods are listed and discussed; highlighted examples of recent studies are also reviewed. Challenges and future trends that could be employed in microfluidic design and fabrication process to address the existing limitations for food safety control are also covered. Microfluidic technology is a promising tool for food safety control with high efficiency and applicability. Miniaturization, portability, low cost, and samples and reagents saving make microfluidic devices an ideal choice for on-site detection, especially in low-resource areas. Despite many advantages of microfluidic technology, the wide manufacturing of microfluidic devices still demands intensive studies to be conducted for user-friendly and accurate food safety control. Introduction of recent advances of microfluidic devices will build a comprehensive understanding of the technology and offer comparative analysis for future studies and on-site application.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Salmonella infection severely threatens human health and causes substantial medical and financial concerns. Sensitive and specific detection of Salmonella in food samples is crucial but remains challenging. While some traditional assays for S. typhimurium are reliable, they suffer from various limitations, such as being time-consuming (culture-based methods), involving intricate nucleic molecular extraction (polymerization chain reaction, PCR), and exhibiting inadequate sensitivity (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, ELISA). In this case, it is essential to establish a rapid, simple-operation, and sensitive method for monitoring S. typhimurium to preserve food quality and prevent contamination. RESULT Herein, an amplification-free detection method for Salmonella was developed by coupling the aptamer magnetic separation with dual-functional HCR (hybridization chain reaction)-scaffold multivalent aptamer and the activity of CRISPR/Cas12a. In the detection system, the dual-functional HCR-scaffold multivalent aptamer with high binding affinity and specificity was fabricated in advance by assembling numerous Salmonella specific aptamers on the long HCR products. In addition to the enhanced affinity, the HCR-multiApt also contains a massive amount of repeated CRISPR-targetable DNA units in its HCR scaffold, which could trigger the trans-cleavage activity of Cas12a. In the presence of target bacteria, the HCR-scaffold multivalent aptamer could attach on the surface of bacteria effectively and amplified the signal of bacteria into CRISPR/Cas12a based fluorescent readout. The proposed detection system allowed for ultrasensitive detection of Salmonella in a linear range from 100 to 107 cfu mL-1 with a LOD (limit of detection) of 2 cfu mL-1. SIGNIFICANCE The novel dual-functional HCR-multiApt presents a simple and powerful strategy for improving the aptamer binding affinity toward Salmonella. Simultaneously, integrating this dual-functional HCR-multiApt with the CRISPR/Cas12a system significantly enhances the sensitivity by cascade signal amplification in a nucleic acids amplification-free way. Finally, leveraging the versatility of the aptamer, this highly sensitive method can be further extended for application in the detection of other bacteria, food safety monitoring, or clinical diagnostics.

Abstract
Simultaneous detection of multiple foodborne pathogens is of great importance for ensuring food safety. Herein, we present a sensitive dual-channel electrochemical biosensor based on copper metal organic frameworks (CuMOF) and lead metal organic framework (PbMOF) for simultaneous detection of Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium) and Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes). The MOF-based nanotags were prepared by functionalizing gold nanoparticles loaded CuMOF (Au@CuMOF) and PbMOF (Au@PbMOF) with signal DNA sequences 1 (sDNA1) and sDNA2, respectively. By selecting invA of S. typhimurium and inlA gene of L. monocytogenes as targe sequences, a sandwich-typed dual-channel biosensor was developed on glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) through hybridization reactions. The sensitive detection of S. typhimurium and L. monocytogenes was achieved by the direct differential pulse voltametric (DPV) signals of Cu2+ and Pb2+. Under optimal conditions, channel 1 of the biosensor showed linear range for invA gene of S. typhimurium in 1 × 10-14-1 × 10-8 M with low detection limit (LOD) of 3.42 × 10-16 M (S/N = 3), and channel 2 of the biosensor showed linear range for inlA gene of L. monocytogenes in 1 × 10-13-1 × 10-8 M with LOD of 6.11 × 10-15 M (S/N = 3). The dual-channel biosensor showed good selectivity which were used to detect S. typhimurium with linear range of 5-1.0 × 104 CFU mL-1 (LOD of 2.33 CFU mL-1), and L. monocytogenes with linear range of 10 - 1.0 × 104 CFU mL-1 (LOD of 6.61 CFU mL-1).

Abstract
Microorganisms in food do harms to human. They can cause serious adverse reactions and sometimes even death. So it is an urgent matter to find an effective method to control them. The research of intelligent- biosensor packaging is in the ascendant in recent years, which is mainly promoted by reflecting on food safety and reducing resource waste. Intelligent biosensor-packaging is an instant and efficient intelligent packaging technology, which can directly and scientifically manifest the quality of food without complex operation. In this review, the purposes of providing relevant information on intelligent biosensor-packaging are reviewed, such as types of biosensors for monitoring foodborne microorganism, the suitable material for intelligent biosensor-packaging and design and fabrication of intelligent biosensor-packaging. The potential of intelligent biosensor-packaging in the detection of foodborne microorganisms is emphasized. The challenges and directions of the intelligent biosensor-packaging in the detection of foodborne pathogens are discussed. With the development of science and technology in the future, the intelligent biosensor-packaging should be commercialized in a real sense. And it is expected that commercial products can be manufactured in the future, which will provide a far-reaching approach in food safety and food prevention. Abstract
The spread of viral diseases has caused global concern in recent years. Detecting viral infections has become challenging in medical research due to their high infectivity and mutation. A rapid and accurate detection method in biomedical and healthcare segments is essential for the effective treatment of pathogenic viruses and early detection of these viruses. Biosensors are used worldwide to detect viral infections associated with the molecular detection of biomarkers. Thus, detecting viruses based on quantum dots biomarkers is inexpensive and has great potential. To detect the ultrasensitive biomarkers of viral infections, QDs appear to be a promising option as biological probes, while physiological components have been used directly to detect multiple biomarkers simultaneously. The simultaneous measurement of numerous clinical parameters of the same sample volume is possible through multiplex detection of human viral infections, which reduces the time and cost required to record any data point. The purpose of this paper is to review recent studies on the effectiveness of the quantum dot as a detection tool for human pandemic viruses. In this review study, different types of quantum dots and their valuable properties in the structure of biomarkers were investigated. Finally, a vision for recent advances in quantum dot-based biomarkers was presented, whereby they can be integrated into super-sensitive probes for the multiplex detection of human viral infections.

Abstract
Unsafe food is estimated to cause 600 million cases of foodborne disease, annually. Thus, the development of methods that could assist in the prevention of foodborne diseases is of high interest. This review summarizes the recent progress toward rapid microbial assessment through (i) spectroscopic techniques, (ii) spectral imaging techniques, (iii) biosensors and (iv) sensors designed to mimic human senses. These methods often produce complex and high-dimensional data that cannot be analyzed with conventional statistical methods. Multivariate statistics and machine learning approaches seemed to be valuable for these methods so as to "translate" measurements to microbial estimations. However, a great proportion of the models reported in the literature misuse these approaches, which may lead to models with low predictive power under generic conditions. Overall, all the methods showed great potential for rapid microbial assessment. Biosensors are closer to wide-scale implementation followed by spectroscopic techniques and then by spectral imaging techniques and sensors designed to mimic human senses.

Abstract
Novel biosensors already provide a fast way to detect the adhesion of whole bacteria (or parts of them), biofilm formation, and the effect of antibiotics. Moreover, the detection sensitivities of recent sensor technologies are large enough to investigate molecular-scale biological processes. Usually, these measurements can be performed in real time without using labeling. Despite these excellent capabilities summarized in the present work, the application of novel, label-free sensor technologies in basic biological research is still rare; the literature is dominated by heuristic work, mostly monitoring the presence and amount of a given analyte. The aims of this review are (i) to give an overview of the present status of label-free biosensors in bacteria monitoring, and (ii) to summarize potential novel directions with biological relevancies to initiate future development. Optical, mechanical, and electrical sensing technologies are all discussed with their detailed capabilities in bacteria monitoring. In order to review potential future applications of the outlined techniques in bacteria research, we summarize the most important kinetic processes relevant to the adhesion and survival of bacterial cells. These processes are potential targets of kinetic investigations employing modern label-free technologies in order to reveal new fundamental aspects. Resistance to antibacterials and to other antimicrobial agents, the most important biological mechanisms in bacterial adhesion and strategies to control adhesion, as well as bacteria-mammalian host cell interactions are all discussed with key relevancies to the future development and applications of biosensors.

Abstract
Technologies for rapid screening of multiple foodborne pathogens have been urgently needed because of the complex food matrix and high outbreaks of foodborne diseases. In this study, multicolor coding up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were synthesized and applied for rapid and simultaneous detection of five kinds of foodborne pathogens. The multicolor coding UCNPs were obtained through doping different concentrations of a sensitizer (Yb3+) on the shell of the synthesized NaYF4:Yb3+, Tm3+ (20%/2%)@NaYF4:Yb3+, and Er3+ (x %/2%) core/shell nanocrystals. All the UCNPs could emit red and green luminescence simultaneously once excited with near-infrared wavelength (980 nm), and the ratio of red and green (R/G ratio) emission light intensity of each kind of UCNPs varied depending on the Yb3+ doping concentration. In addition, the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) modified with the monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against the target bacteria were used to capture and separate the bacteria, resulting in obtaining the MNP-bacterium complexes. Different UCNPs with multicolor coding acted as signal probes were also modified with the mAbs to react with the MNP-bacterium complexes to form the MNP-bacterium-UCNP sandwich complexes. After the sandwich complexes were excited with a wavelength of 980 nm, the obtained R/G ratios and the green photoluminescence intensity (PL intensity) could be used to distinguish and quantitatively detect foodborne pathogens, respectively. This proposed nanoplatform could detect five foodborne pathogens simultaneously within 2 h with good sensitivity and specificity, showing great potential for multiplex detection of other targets in the fields of medical diagnosis and food security.

Abstract
Salmonella is one of the main causes of foodborne infectious diseases, posing a serious threat to public health. It can enter the food supply chain at various stages of production, processing, distribution, and marketing. High prevalence of Salmonella necessitates efficient and effective approaches for its identification, detection, and monitoring at an early stage. Because conventional methods based on plate counting and real-time polymerase chain reaction are time-consuming and laborious, novel rapid detection methods are urgently needed for in-field and on-line applications. Biosensors provide many advantages over conventional laboratory assays in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy, and show superiority in rapid response and potential portability. They are now recognized as promising alternative tools and one of the most on-site applicable and end user-accessible methods for rapid detection. In recent years, we have witnessed a flourishing of studies in the development of robust and elaborate biosensors for detection of Salmonella in food. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview on Salmonella biosensors by highlighting different signal-transducing mechanisms (optical, electrochemical, piezoelectric, etc.) and critically analyzing its recent trends, particularly in combination with nanomaterials, microfluidics, portable instruments, and smartphones. Furthermore, current challenges are emphasized and future perspectives are discussed.

Abstract
The high efficiency and accurate detection of foodborne pathogens and spoilage microorganisms in food are a task of great social, economic, and public health importance. However, the contamination levels of target bacteria in food samples are very low. Owing to the background interference of food ingredients and negative impact of nontarget flora, the establishment of efficient pretreatment techniques is very crucial for the detection of food microorganisms. With the significant advantages of high specificity and great separation efficiency, immunomagnetic separation (IMS) assay based on immunomagnetic particles (IMPs) has been considered as a powerful system for the separation and enrichment of target bacteria. This paper mainly focuses on the development of IMS as well as their application in food microorganisms detection. First, the basic principle of IMS in the concentration of food bacteria is presented. Second, the effect of different factors, including the sizes of magnetic particles (MPs), immobilization of antibody and operation parameters (the molar ratio of antibody to MPs, the amount of IMPs, incubation time, and bacteria concentration) on the immunocapture efficiency of IMPs are discussed. The performance of IMPs in different food samples is also evaluated. Finally, the combination of IMS and various kinds of detection methods (immunology-based methods, nucleic acid-based methods, fluorescence methods, and biosensors) to detect pathogenic and spoilage organisms is summarized. The challenges and future trends of IMS are also proposed. As an effective pretreatment technique, IMS can improve the detection sensitivity and shorten their testing time, thus exhibiting broad prospect in the field of food bacteria detection.

Abstract
Cell blocking (CB) technique has been widely applied in many studies since the last century. In our research, this technique was mostly used to study the enhancement of the vacuolar response-based system that could detect Shigella sp. and Salmonella sp. investigated in previous studies. The recombinant yeast cells were blocked by mixing with agarose gel on a 96-wells plate, then storing this plate in -80 °C before using. The optimal conditions for the new system, such as agarose concentration, maximum storage time, were also established. Finally, the efficiency of the vacuolar response-based system was improved, and this system could be used as a portable detector for the foodborne pathogen.

Abstract
We have developed an alginate hydrogel-embedded capillary sensor (AHCS) for naked eye-based quantification of immunoassay. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) can modulate gel-sol transformation to increase the permeability of Cu2+-cross-linked alginate hydrogel film in the AHCS, followed by solution exchange into the capillary. Through measuring the length of the liquid phase of the microfluidics in the capillary at a given time, the concentration of the ALP could be quantified with the naked eye. Since ALP is widely applied as a signal reporter for immunoassays, the AHCS could easily accommodate conventional immune sensing platforms. We justify the practicality of AHCS with hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) in serum samples and got comparable results with commercialized immunoassay. This AHCS is easy to make and use, effective in cost, and robust in quantification with the naked eye, showing great promise for next generation point-of-care testing.

Abstract
N-acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs), a class of auto-inducers produced by Gram-negative bacteria, are typical signaling molecules in quorum sensing (QS) systems. Importantly, AHLs play a key role in determining the virulence of foodborne pathogens and reflect the activity of spoilage bacteria. In this study, an eco-friendly fluorescence-sensing platform for the rapid and sensitive detection of AHLs was developed and characterized. Molecularly imprinted polymers embedded with yellow-emitting carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were obtained via the sol-gel process using furanone as an alternative template molecule, and long-wave-emitting CQDs with excellent optical properties were used as signal conversion materials. After template elution, the blotting cavities on the surface of the CQD@MIPs (molecularly imprinted polymers) were able to selectively recognize AHLs, demonstrating a stronger fluorescence response compared with the corresponding CQD@NIPs (non-imprinted polymers). Under optimal test conditions, a good linear relationship between the concentration of analyte and the relative fluorescence intensity of the CQD@MIPs was observed. The linear detection range was 0-2.0 μM, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.067 μM. Importantly, the proposed sensing platform functioned as an optical detection strategy that responded quickly (2 min) to AHLs. Additionally, this sensing platform was applied to the analysis of AHLs in bacterial supernatant samples with satisfactory results. More interestingly, the 3D-printing CQD@MIPs were tentative explored in this work, which was personalized and portable, has an advantage of point of care testing (POCT) detection in the future. Based on these results, this detection strategy has demonstrated substantial potential for application in and the field of food safety.

Abstract
Sensitive detection of lipopolysaccharides (LPSs), which are present on the outer wall of Gram-negative bacteria, is important to reflect the degree of bacterial contamination in food. For indirect assessment of the LPS content, a miniaturized electrochemical cell sensor consisting of a screen-printed paper electrode, a three-dimensional cells-in-gels-in-paper culture system, and a conductive jacket device was developed for in situ detection of nitric oxide released from LPS-treated mouse macrophage cells (Raw264.7). Nafion/polypyrrole/graphene oxide with excellent selectivity, high conductivity, and good biocompatibility functionalized on the working electrode via electrochemical polymerization could enhance sensing. Raw264.7 cells encapsulated in the alginate hydrogel were immobilized on a Nafion/polypyrrole/graphene oxide/screen-printed carbon electrode in paper fibers as a biorecognition element. Differential impulse voltammetry was employed to record the current signal as-influenced by LPS. Results indicated that LPS from Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis caused a significant increase in peak current, varying from 1 × 10-2 to 1 × 104 ng/mL, dose-dependently. This assay had a detection limit of 3.5 × 10-3 ng/mL with a linear detection range of 1 × 10-2 to 3 ng/mL. These results were confirmed by analysis of nitric oxide released from Raw264.7 via the Griess method. The miniaturized sensor was ultimately applied to detect LPSs in fruit juice samples. The results indicated that the method exhibited high recovery and relative standard deviation lower than 2.65% and LPSs in samples contaminated with 102-105 CFU/mL bacteria could be detected, which proved the practical value of the sensor. Thus, a novel, low-cost, and highly sensitive approach for LPS detection was developed, providing a method to assess Gram-negative bacteria contamination in food.

Abstract
Salmonella is a leading source of bacterial foodborne illness in humans, causing gastroenteritis outbreaks with bacteraemia occurrences that can lead to clinical complications and death. Eggs, poultry and pig products are considered as the main carriers of the pathogenic Salmonella for humans. To prevent this relevant zoonosis, key changes in food safety regulations were undertaken to improve controls in the food production chain. Despite these measures, large outbreaks of salmonellosis were reported worldwide in the last decade. Thus, new strategies for Salmonella detection are a priority for both, food safety and public health authorities. Such detection systems should provide significant reduction in diagnostic time (hours) compared to the currently available methods (days). Herein, we report on the discovery and characterization of nucleic acid probes for the sensitive and specific detection of live Salmonella within less than 8 h of incubation. We are the first to postulate the nuclease activity derived from Salmonella as biomarker of infection and its utility to develop innovative detection strategies. Our results have shown the screening and identification of two oligonucleotide sequences (substrates) as the most promising probes for detecting Salmonella - Sal-3 and Sal-5. The detection limits for both probes were determined with the reference Salmonella Typhimurium (STM 1) and Salmonella Enteritidis (SE 1) cultures. Sal-3 has reported LOD values around 105 CFU mL-1 for STM 1 and 104 CFU mL-1 for SE 1, while Sal-5 proves to be a slightly better probe, with LODs of 104 CFU mL-1 for STM 1 and 104 CFU mL-1 for SE 1. Both selected probes have shown the capability to recognize 49 out of 51 different Salmonella serotypes tested in vitro and the most frequent serotypes in porcine mesenteric lymph nodes as a standard sample used in fattening-pig salmonellosis baseline studies. Notably, our results showed 100% correlation between nuclease detection and the PCR-InvA or ISO-6579 standard method, underlining the great potential of this innovative nucleic acids technology to be implemented as a rapid method for food safety testing.

Abstract
There are an estimated 48 million cases of foodborne illness in the United States every year. In general, these illnesses are the result of unintentional contamination and improper food handling. Because bacterial contamination plays a major role in food spoilage and, hence, in foodborne illnesses, it is important to design easy, portable methods to detect bacteria in food. Quorum sensing (QS) enables bacteria to communicate with one another and by doing so they can modulate their behavior in a cell-density dependent manner. In bacteria, quorum sensing molecules (QSMs) are known to control several factors such as virulence factor production, antibiotic production, biofilm formation, and gene regulation. Herein, we demonstrate the applicability of whole cell biosensing systems for the early identification of food contamination via detection of QSMs. Additionally, we have developed a portable system for detection of bacterial contamination using microdots of immobilized whole cell-based biosensors on paper that boast nanomolar level detection of QSMs in two different food matrices, namely beef and milk. Limits of detection ranged from 1 × 10-7 M to 1 × 10-9 M with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 1-16%. This rapid, easy, and portable test could be a useful tool for use in the field and during all stages of food manipulation, i.e., from farms to distribution, storage, sales, and preparation prior to consumption, to ensure that food is free of bacterial contamination.

Abstract
In the modern era of molecular evidence-based medicine and advanced biomedical technologies, the rapid, sensitive and specific assay of multiple pathogens is critical to, but largely absent from, clinical practice. Therefore, to improve the current ordinary separation and collection method, we report herein a strategy of magnetism-resolved separation and fluorescence quantification for near-simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens, followed by the direct antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST). To accomplish this strategy, we utilized aptamer-modified fluorescent-magnetic multifunctional nanoprobes (apt-FMNPs). FMNPs with intriguing different magnetic responses and excellent fluorescence quality were first self-assembled based on metal coordination interaction using (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane, magnetic γ-Fe2O3, and fluorescent quantum dots as matrix components. Then, aptamers, which specific to target pathogens of Escherichia coli O157:H7 ( E. coli) and Salmonella typhimurium ( S. typ), were conjugated with FMNPs to yield apt-FMNPs nanoprobes for multiple pathogens assay. Based on the discrepant magnetic response of pathogen@nanoprobes complex under the identical external magnetic field, the model bacteria were fished out by magnetic adsorption at different time points and subjected to fluorescence quantification with good linear ranges and detection limits within 1h. Multiple pathogens spiked in real samples were also effectively detected by the apt-FMNPs and sequentially fished out for AST assay, which showed similar results to that for pure pathogens. The apt-FMNPs-based strategy of near-simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens shows promise for the potential application in the diagnosis and treatment of pathogen-related infectious diseases.

Abstract
The polarization imaging technique is a powerful approach to probe microstructural and optical information of biological structures (e.g., tissue samples). Here, we have studied the polarization properties of different bacterial colonies in order to evaluate the possibility of bacterial detection and discrimination. In this regard, we have taken the backscattering Mueller matrix images of four different bacteria colonies (i.e., Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Rhodococcus erythropolis, and Staphylococcus aureus). Although the images have the potential to distinguish qualitatively different bacterial colonies, we explored more accurate and quantitative parameters criteria for discrimination of bacterial samples; more specifically, we have exploited the Mueller matrix polar decomposition (MMPD),frequency distribution histogram (FDH), and central moment analysis method. The outcomes demonstrated a superior capacity of Mueller matrix imaging, MMPD, and FDH in bacterial colonies identification and discrimination. This approach might pave the way for a reliable, efficient, and cheap way of identification of infectious diseases.

Abstract
A versatile nanopore sensing platform to detect any aptamer using nanopores by designing DNA hairpins that are complementary to the aptamer is described. This platform can detect the presence of aptamer binding targets regardless of their size, which has been a major hurdle for nanopore detection systems. Moreover, the signal-to-noise ratio is increased by eliminating most of the unwanted substances from the sample via simple sample preparation steps. To detect Bacillus thuringiensis HD-73 spores using this sensing platform, DNA hairpins complementary to the target-specific aptamers were designed, and the hairpins were characterized using alpha-hemolysin nanopores after the reaction of spores and aptamers and subsequent reaction with the complementary DNA hairpins. The platform exhibited a detection limit as low as 1.2 × 101 CFU mL-1 and was compatible with a wide range of spore concentrations from 1.2 × 101 CFU mL-1 to 1.2 × 106 CFU mL-1 while it is still expandable to higher spore concentrations.

Abstract
A simple, highly-automated instrument system used for on-site detection of foodborne pathogens based on fluorescence was designed, fabricated, and preliminarily tested in this paper. A corresponding method has been proved effective in our previous studies. This system utilizes a light-emitting diode (LED) to excite fluorescent labels and a spectrometer to record the fluorescence signal from samples. A rotation stage for positioning and switching samples was innovatively designed for high-throughput detection, ten at most in one single run. We also developed software based on LabVIEW for data receiving, processing, and the control of the whole system. In the test of using a pure quantum dot (QD) solution as a standard sample, detection results from this home-made system were highly-relevant with that from a well-commercialized product and even slightly better reproducibility was found. And in the test of three typical kinds of food-borne pathogens, fluorescence signals recorded by this system are highly proportional to the variation of the sample concentration, with a satisfied limit of detection (LOD) (nearly 10²-10³ CFU·mL-1 in food samples). Additionally, this instrument system is low-cost and easy-to-use, showing a promising potential for on-site rapid detection of food-borne pathogens.
