Abstract
In this study, a low field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) homogeneous sensor was constructed for detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli) based on the copper metabolism of E. coli triggered click reaction. When live E. coli was present, a large amount of Cu2+ ions were transformed into Cu+ via copper metabolism, which then catalyzed a Cu+-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction between two materials, azide group modified gadolinium oxide nanorods (Gd2O3-Az) and PA-GO@Fe3O4 i.e., graphene oxide (GO) loaded with large amounts of alkynyl (PA) groups and Fe3O4 nanoparticles simultaneously. After magnetic separation, unbound Gd2O3-Az was dissolved by added hydrochloric acid (HCl) to generate homogeneous Gd3+ solution, enabling homogeneous detection of E. coli. Triple signal amplification was achieved through the CuAAC reaction induced by E. coli copper metabolism, functional nanomaterials, and HCl assisted homogeneous detection. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the linear range and limit of detection (LOD) for E. coli were 10-1.0 × 107 CFU/mL and 3.5 CFU/mL, respectively, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were all less than 2.8 %. In addition, the sensor has satisfactory selectivity, stability and practical sample application capability, providing a new approach for the LF-NMR detection of food-borne pathogenic bacteria.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of marking methods on the outcomes of body composition analysis and provide guidance for the selection of marking methods in mouse body composition analysis. METHODS Male C57BL/6J mice aged 6 weeks were randomly assigned for pre- and post- ear tagging measurements. The body composition of the mice was measured using a small animal body composition analyzer, which provided measurements of the mass of fat, lean, and free fluid. Then, the mass of fat, lean and free fluid to body weight ratio was gained. Further data analysis was conducted to obtain the range and coefficient of variation in body composition measurements for each mouse. The distribution of fat and lean tissue in the mice was also analyzed by comparing the fat-to-lean ratio. RESULTS (1) The mass of all body composition components in the ear tagging group was significantly lower than that in the control group. (2) There was a significant increase in the range and coefficient of variation of body composition measurements between the ear tagging group and the control group. (3) The fat-to-lean ratio in the ear tagging group was significantly lower than that in the control group. CONCLUSIONS Ear tagging significantly lowered the results of body composition analysis in mice and higher the results of measurement error. Therefore, ear tagging should be avoided as much as possible when conducting body composition analysis experiments in mice.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is a multifaceted technical and scientific field undergoing a fast expansion. Nanoparticles, quantum dots, nanotubes, nanorods, nanowires, nanochips and many more are being increasingly used for fabrication of nanosensors and nanobiosensors to increase the sensitivity and selectivity of reactions. Food safety is an extremely important concern in food industries since it is directly associated with effect of food on human health. Here in our review, we have not only described the newest information regarding methods and use of nanomaterials for construction of nanosensors but also their detection range, limit of detection (LOD) and applications for food safety. Precise nanosensors having improved sensitivity and low limit of detection were discussed in brief. Review is primarily focused on nanosensors employed for detection of adulterants and contaminants in food products such as meat products, milk, fruit juices and water samples.

Abstract
Mycotoxin contamination in food and the environment seriously harms human health. Sensitive and timely detection of mycotoxins is crucial. Here, we report a dual-functional hybrid membrane with absorptivity and responsiveness for fluorescent-quantitative detection of mycotoxin aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). A biomineralization-inspired and microwave-accelerated fabrication method was established to prepare a hybrid membrane with a metal-organic framework (MOF) loaded in high density. The MOF presented high efficiency in capturing AFB1 and showed fluorescence intensity alteration simultaneously, enabling a dual adsorption-response mode. Deriving from the inherent porous structure of the hybrid membrane and the absorptive/responsive ability of the loaded MOF, a filtration-enhanced detection mode was elaborated to provide a 1.67-fold signal increase compared with the conventional soaking method. Therefore, the hybrid membrane exhibited a rapid response time of 10 min and a low detection limit of 0.757 ng mL-1, superior to most analogues in rapidity and sensitivity. The hybrid membrane also presented superior specificity, reproducibility, and anti-interference ability and even performed well in extreme environments such as strong acid or alkaline, satisfying the practical requirements for facile and in-field detection. Therefore, the membrane had strong applicability in chicken feed samples, with a detection recovery between 70.6% and 101%. The hybrid membrane should have significant prospects in the rapid and in-field inspection of mycotoxins for agriculture and food.

Abstract
In this work, a sensitive low field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) homogeneous immunoassay, also called magnetic resonance switch (MRSw) sensor, for Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VP) was developed. Superparamagnetic 2D nanomaterial was designed and used as the magnetic probe of MRSw sensor. It was GO@SPIONs&Ab, a composite nanomaterial with many superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (SPIONs) providing a magnetic signal and VP antibody (Ab) specifically recognizing the target VP evenly distributed on the surface of GO. The presence of VP controllably changed the aggregation state of the probe, eliminating the uncertainty of MRSw sensor type, and thus then achieving a regular variation of transverse relaxation time T2 and ensuing quantitative detection of VP. Triple signal enhancement of the MRSw sensor was obtained due to the application of the designed 2D probe, by increasing the number of SPIONs, improving the magnetic intensity and susceptibility, and forming a synergistic effect. Under optimized experimental conditions, VP could be detected with satisfied sensitivity, selectivity, precision, accuracy, and stability, even in turbid real samples. LOQ for VP was 10 CFU/mL. This detection principle is widely applicable, providing an idea for the construction of highly sensitive MRSw sensors.

Abstract
The term "nanozyme" refers to a nanomaterial possessing enzymatic capabilities, and in recent years, the field of nanozymes has experienced rapid advancement. Nanozymes offer distinct advantages over natural enzymes, including ease of production, cost-effectiveness, prolonged storage capabilities, and exceptional environmental stability. In this review, we provide a concise overview of various common applications of nanozymes, encompassing the detection and removal of pollutants such as pathogens, toxic ions, pesticides, phenols, organic contaminants, air pollution, and antibiotic residues. Furthermore, our focus is directed towards the potential challenges and future developments within the realm of nanozymes. The burgeoning applications of nanozymes in bioscience and technology have kindled significant interest in research in this domain, and it is anticipated that nanozymes will soon become a topic of explosive discussion.

Abstract
Pathogen detection and control have long presented formidable challenges in the domains of medicine and public health. This review paper underscores the potential of nanozymes as emerging bio-mimetic enzymes that hold promise in effectively tackling these challenges. The key features and advantages of nanozymes are introduced, encompassing their comparable catalytic activity to natural enzymes, enhanced stability and reliability, cost effectiveness, and straightforward preparation methods. Subsequently, the paper delves into the detailed utilization of nanozymes for pathogen detection. This includes their application as biosensors, facilitating rapid and sensitive identification of diverse pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and plasmodium. Furthermore, the paper explores strategies employing nanozymes for pathogen control, such as the regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), HOBr/Cl regulation, and clearance of extracellular DNA to impede pathogen growth and transmission. The review underscores the vast potential of nanozymes in pathogen detection and control through numerous specific examples and case studies. The authors highlight the efficiency, rapidity, and specificity of pathogen detection achieved with nanozymes, employing various strategies. They also demonstrate the feasibility of nanozymes in hindering pathogen growth and transmission. These innovative approaches employing nanozymes are projected to provide novel options for early disease diagnoses, treatment, and prevention. Through a comprehensive discourse on the characteristics and advantages of nanozymes, as well as diverse application approaches, this paper serves as a crucial reference and guide for further research and development in nanozyme technology. The expectation is that such advancements will significantly contribute to enhancing disease control measures and improving public health outcomes.

Abstract
Rapid and sensitive detection of foodborne pathogens in complex environments is essential for food protection. A universal electrochemical aptasensor was fabricated for the detection of three common foodborne pathogens, including Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium). The aptasensor was developed based on the homogeneous and membrane filtration strategy. Zirconium-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66)/methylene blue (MB)/aptamer composite was designed as a signal amplification and recognition probe. Bacteria were quantitatively detected by the current changes of MB. By simply changing the aptamer, different bacteria could be detected. The detection limits of E. coli, S. aureus and S. typhimurium were 5, 4 and 3 CFU·mL-1, respectively. In humidity and salt environments, the stability of the aptasensor was satisfactory. The aptasensor exhibited satisfactory detection performance in different real samples. This aptasensor has excellent potential for rapid detection of foodborne pathogens in complex environments.

Abstract
Herein, a novel magnetic relaxation sensing strategy based on the change in Fe3+ content has been proposed by utilizing the conversion of Fe3+ ions to Prussian blue (PB) precipitates. Compared with the common detection approach based on the valence state change of Fe3+ ions, our strategy can cause a larger change in the relaxation time of water protons and higher detection sensitivity since PB precipitate can induce a larger change in the Fe3+ ion concentration and has a weaker effect on the relaxation process of water protons relative to Fe2+ ions. Then, we employ alkaline phosphatase (ALP) as a model target to verify the feasibility and detection performance of the as-proposed strategy. Actually, ascorbic acid (AA) generated from the ALP-catalyzed L-ascorbyl-2-phosphate hydrolysis reaction can reduce potassium ferricyanide into potassium ferrocyanide, and potassium ferrocyanide reacts with Fe3+ to form PB precipitates, leading to a higher relaxation time. Under optimum conditions, the method for ALP detection has a wide linear range from 5 to 230 mU/mL, and the detection limit is 0.28 mU/mL, sufficiently demonstrating the feasibility and satisfactory analysis performance of this strategy, which opens up a new path for the construction of magnetic relaxation sensors. Furthermore, this strategy has also been successfully applied to ascorbic acid oxidase detection, suggesting its expansibility in magnetic relaxation detection.

Abstract
Herein, a novel cluster-bomb type signal sensing and amplification strategy in low field nuclear magnetic resonance was proposed, and a magnetic biosensor for ultrasensitive homogeneous immunoassay of Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VP) was developed. The capture unit MGO@Ab was magnetic graphene oxide (MGO) immobilized by VP antibody (Ab) to capture VP. And, the signal unit PS@Gd-CQDs@Ab was polystyrene (PS) pellets covered by Ab to recognize VP and Gd-CQDs i.e. carbon quantum dots (CQDs) containing lots of magnetic signal labels Gd3+. In presence of VP, the immunocomplex signal unit-VP-capture unit could be formed and separated by magnetic force conveniently from the sample matrix. With the successive introduction of disulfide threitol and hydrochloric acid, signal units were cleaved and disintegrated, resulting in a homogeneous dispersion of Gd3+. Thus, cluster-bomb type dual signal amplification was achieved through increasing the amount and the dispersity of signal labels simultaneously. Under optimal experimental conditions, VP could be detected in the concentration range of 5-1.0 × 106 CFU/mL, with a limit of quantitation (LOQ) 4 CFU/mL. In addition, satisfactory selectivity, stability and reliability could be obtained. Therefore, this cluster-bomb type signal sensing and amplification strategy is powerful in designing magnetic biosensor and detecting pathogenic bacteria.

Abstract
The use of nanotechnology in the food industry raises uncertainty in many respects. For years, achievements of nanotechnology have been applied mainly in biomedicine and computer science, but recently it has also been used in the food industry. Due to the extremely small (nano) scale, the properties and behavior of nanomaterials may differ from their macroscopic counterparts. They can be used as biosensors to detect reagents or microorganisms, monitor bacterial growth conditions, increase food durability e.g. when placed in food packaging, reducing the amount of certain ingredients without changing the consistency of the product (research on fat substitutes is underway), improve the taste of food, make some nutrients get better absorbed by the body, etc. There are companies on the market that are already introducing nanoparticles into the economy to improve their functionality, e.g. baby feeding bottles. This review focuses on the use of nanoparticles in the food industry, both organic (chitosan, cellulose, proteins) and inorganic (silver, iron, zinc oxide, titanium oxide, etc.). The use of nanomaterials in food production requires compliance with all legal requirements regarding the safety and quantity of nano-processed food products described in this review. In the future, new methods of testing nanoparticles should be developed that would ensure the effectiveness of compounds subjected to, for example, nano-encapsulation, i.e. whether the encapsulation process had a positive impact on the specific properties of these compounds. Nanotechnology has revolutionized our approach towards food engineering (from production to processing), food storage and the creation of new materials and products, and the search for new product applications.

Abstract
Rapid detection methods require pre-enrichment culture in order to detect low levels of foodborne pathogens. To rapidly detect foodborne pathogens, enrichment culture processes could be replaced. Filtration and immunomagnetic separation methods have been identified to effectively concentrate and separate target pathogens from foods. In this study, a combination of filtration and immunomagnetic separation (IMS) has enabled the rapid and sensitive detection of foodborne pathogens. The pretreatment method, including separation and concentration procedures, increased sensitivity 10-100-fold. The sensitivity of a combination method using filtration and IMS to detect Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium was 100-101 CFU/10 mL. In fresh-cut apples, IMS combined with filtration effectively improved the detection limit of real-time PCR to 2.70 × 101 CFU/g in E. coli O157:H7 and 1.80 × 102 CFU/g in Salmonella. The filtration simplified processing of large-volumes (250 mL) and effectively concentrated pathogens while decreasing immunomagnetic beads used in IMS. Bacterial concentration by IMS combined with filtration increased sensitivity 10-100-fold compared with control. In addition, the application of IMS effectively removed concentrated residual food material (10-15 mg/mL) after filtration, improving relative sensitivity. In conclusion, this method may detect foodborne pathogen in foods such as fresh-cut fruits in a more rapid and sensitive fashion than traditional culture-based methods.

Abstract
Salmonella, as a common foodborne pathogen in dairy products, poses a great threat to human health. We studied a new detection method based on quantum dots (QD). A fluorescent biosensor with multiple fluorescent signal amplification based on a streptavidin (SA) biotin system and the polyamino linear polymer poly-l-lysine (PLL) were established to detect Salmonella in milk. First, Salmonella was captured on a black 96-well plate with paired Salmonella mAb to form a double-antibody sandwich. Second, SA was immobilized on biotin-modified mAb by SA-biotin specific bond. Then, the biotin-modified polylysine (BT-PLL) was bound on SA and specifically bonded again through the SA-biotin system. Finally, water-soluble CdSe/ZnS QD-labeled SA was added to a black 96-well plate for covalent coupling with BT-PLL. The fluorescent signal was amplified in a dendritic manner by the layer-by-layer overlap of SA and biotin and the covalent coupling of biotinylated PLL. Under optimal conditions, the detection limit was 4.9 × 103 cfu/mL in PBS. The detection limit was 10 times better than that of the conventional sandwich ELISA. In addition, the proposed biosensor was well specific and could be used for detecting Salmonella in milk samples.

Abstract
This review (with 126 references) aims at providing an updated overview of the recent developments and innovations of the preparation and application of magnetic nanoparticles for food safety analysis. During the past two decades, various magnetic nanoparticles with different sizes, shapes, and surface modifications have been designed, synthesized, and characterized with the prospering development of material science. Analytical scientists and food scientists are among the ones who bring these novel materials from laboratories to commercial applications. Powerful and versatile surface functional groups and high surface to mass ratios make these magnetic nanoparticles useful tools for high-efficiency capture and preconcentration of certain molecules, even when they exist in trace levels or complicated food matrices. This is why more and more methods for sensitive detection and quantification of hazards in foods are developed based on these magic magnetic tools. In this review, the principles and superiorities of using magnetic nanoparticles for food pollutant analysis are first introduced, like the mechanism of magnetic solid phase extraction, a most commonly used method for food safety-related sample pretreatment. Their design and preparation are presented afterward, alongside the mechanisms underlying their application for different analytical purposes. After that, recently developed magnetic nanoparticle-based methods for dealing with food pollutants such as organic pollutants, heavy metals, and pathogens in different food matrices are summarized in detail. In the end, some humble outlooks on future directions for work in this field are provided.

Abstract
In this study, Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) was introduced to detect the concentration of live bacteria for the first time depending on the redox reaction between CCK-8 solution and dehydrogenase. CCK-8 solution can be reduced to form water soluble orange-yellow formazan by the dehydrogenase present in bacterial cells, and the concentration of live bacteria is proportional to the absorbance value of formazan at 450 nm. Based on this principle, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were chosen as the model bacteria. The optimal detection conditions were investigated and a good linear relationship was obtained in the concentration range from 2.600 × 102 to 1.160 × 109 CFU mL-1 with a linear equation of Y = 0.06305 log10 X-0.1153 (X in CFU mL-1, R2 = 0.9747) for S. aureus and 9.750 × 102 to 6.000 × 108 CFU mL-1 with a linear equation of Y = 0.06122 log10 X-0.1358 (X in CFU mL-1, R2 = 0.9958) for E. coli. The CCK-8 based viable bacteria detection method can be completed within 2 h with a wide bacterial detection concentration range. Satisfactory results were obtained when applied to an actual sample analysis and there is a good consistency between the proposed CCK-8 based method and the traditional plate counting method. More importantly, this method can realize the one-time detection of a large number of samples with high sensitivity, which suggests its great potential in high-throughput bacterial detection.

Abstract
Rapid and sensitive detection of foodborne pathogens is of great importance for food safety. Here, a set of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) biosensors based on a O-carboxymethyl chitosan target gadolinium (Gd) probe was developed to quickly detect Salmonella in milk by combining NMR technology and bioimmunotechnology with membrane filtration technology. First, O-carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CMC) was biotinylated to prepare biotinylated O-carboxymethyl chitosan (biotin-O-CMC) through amide reaction, and biotinylated magnetic complexes (biotin-O-CMC-Gd) were obtained by using O-CMC, which has strong chelating adsorption on Gd. The target probe was obtained by combining biotin-O-CMC-Gd with the biotinylated antibody (biotin-antibody) via streptavidin (SA) by introducing the SA-biotin system. Then, Salmonella was captured by the target probe through antigen-antibody interaction. Finally, NMR was used to measure the longitudinal relaxation time (T1) of the filtrate collected by membrane filtration. This NMR biosensor with good specificity and high efficiency can detect Salmonella with the sensitivity of 1.8 × 103 cfu/mL within 2 h; in addition, it can realize the detection of complex samples because of its strong anti-interference capability and may open up a new method for rapid detection of Salmonella, which has a great application potential.

Abstract
Microbial growth and fluctuations in environmental conditions have been shown to cause microbial contamination and deterioration of food. Thus, it is paramount to develop reliable strategies to effectively prevent the sale and consumption of contaminated or spoiled food. Responsive packaging systems are designed to react to specific stimuli in the food or environment, such as microorganisms or temperature, then implement an informational or corrective response. Informative responsive packaging is aimed at continuously monitoring the changes in food or environmental conditions and conveys this information to the users in real time. Meanwhile, packaging systems with the capacity to control contamination or deterioration are also of great interest. Encouragingly, corrective responsive packaging attempting to mitigate the adverse effects of condition fluctuations on food has been investigated. This packaging exerts its effects through the triggered release of active agents by environmental stimuli. In this review, informative and corrective responsive packaging is conceptualized clearly and concisely. The mechanism and characteristics of each type of packaging are discussed in depth. This review also summarized the latest research progress of responsive packaging and objectively appraised their advantages. Evidently, the mechanism through which packaging systems respond to microbial contamination and associated environmental factors was also highlighted. Moreover, risk concerns, related legislation, and consumer perspective in the application of responsive packaging are discussed as well. Broadly, this comprehensive review covering the latest information on responsive packaging aims to provide a timely reference for scientific research and offer guidance for presenting their applications in food industry.

Abstract
This article reviews the various techniques of immobilizing a photocatalyst into and onto the polymer membrane for pollutant removal and as a problem solver in handling suspended photocatalyst issues from the previous literature. A particular focus is given to the preparation of mixed matrix membranes and deposition techniques for photocatalytic degradation in applications for wastewater treatment. Advantages and disadvantages in this application are evaluated. Various operating conditions during the process are presented. About 90 recently published studies (2008–2020) are reviewed. From the literature, it was found that TiO2 is the most favoured photocatalyst that is frequently used in photocatalytic water treatment. Dry–wet co-spinning and sputtering techniques emerged as the promising technique for immobilizing a uniformly distributed photocatalyst within the polymeric membrane, and exhibited excellence pollutant removal. In general, the technical applicability is the key factor in selecting the best photocatalyst immobilizing technique for water treatment. Finally, the scope of various techniques that have been reviewed may provide potential for future photocatalytic study. Abstract
The highly efficient detection of Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium), a common foodborne bacterial, is important for the safety assurance of leafy vegetables. In this study, a fluorescent sensor (FMNCs-Apt), based on Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles and aptamer-modified carbon quantum dots, was developed for the rapid and highly sensitive detection of S. typhimurium in lettuce. First, carbon quantum dots were covalently bonded to the surface of prepared Fe3O4@chitosan to form magnetic fluorescence composite nanoparticles (FMNCs). Then, the aptamers of S. typhimurium were covalently linked to the surface (and named FMNCs-Apt). Fluorescence intensity of the FMNCs-Apt probes decreased as they aggregated on the surface of the bacteria, and the aggregation was separated using a magnet. Under the optimal conditions, the fluorescence change values of the solution showed a good linear relationship with the concentration of Salmonella (103-106 CFU mL-1). The detection limit of the method is 100 CFU mL-1 and 138 CFU mL-1 in fresh-cut vegetable washing solution and lettuce sample, respectively. Accordingly, this developed fluorescent probe became a highly sensitive and efficient sensor for the rapid detection of S. typhimurium in lettuce.

Abstract
Salmonella is one of the main causes of foodborne infectious diseases, posing a serious threat to public health. It can enter the food supply chain at various stages of production, processing, distribution, and marketing. High prevalence of Salmonella necessitates efficient and effective approaches for its identification, detection, and monitoring at an early stage. Because conventional methods based on plate counting and real-time polymerase chain reaction are time-consuming and laborious, novel rapid detection methods are urgently needed for in-field and on-line applications. Biosensors provide many advantages over conventional laboratory assays in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy, and show superiority in rapid response and potential portability. They are now recognized as promising alternative tools and one of the most on-site applicable and end user-accessible methods for rapid detection. In recent years, we have witnessed a flourishing of studies in the development of robust and elaborate biosensors for detection of Salmonella in food. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview on Salmonella biosensors by highlighting different signal-transducing mechanisms (optical, electrochemical, piezoelectric, etc.) and critically analyzing its recent trends, particularly in combination with nanomaterials, microfluidics, portable instruments, and smartphones. Furthermore, current challenges are emphasized and future perspectives are discussed.
