Abstract
BACKGROUND Mercury is one of the most toxic heavy metal contaminants that can be harmful to human health through the food chain. Recently, the colorimetric detection of heavy metals based on nanozyme catalytic activity has received extensive interest due to the simplicity, signal visibility and suitability for in situ detection. However, the majority of these nanozymes that can be utilized for detecting mercury with high synthesis temperature and complicated synthesis methods, which limited their practical application. RESULTS In this work, flower-like ZnO@Pt composites were simply synthesized at room temperature, the flower-like structure and the high electron mobility of ZnO endow ZnO@Pt with stronger peroxidase-like activity. Consequently, dual-mode (UV-vis and smartphone) colorimetric sensors were designed to detect Hg2+. In UV-vis mode, the Hg2+ concentration linear range was 10-400 nM, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.54 nM. In smartphone mode, the Hg2+ concentration linear range was 50-1250 nM, and the LOD was 29.8 nM. A parallel analysis in 3 real water samples was confirmed by ICP-MS, the results showed good correlations (R2 > 0.98), indicating the practical reliability of these sensors. SIGNIFICANCE The novel flower-like ZnO@Pt composites with high stability, catalytic activity and Hg2+ response were simply synthesized at room temperature, simplifying the synthesis steps and reducing costs. The sensitivity of the developed colorimetric sensor in UV-vis mode was 3-145 times higher than that of the similar methods. The colorimetric sensor in smartphone mode broadened the detection range and improved the portability of Hg2+ detection. Thus, the dual-mode (UV-vis and smartphone) colorimetric sensors providing new detection modes for rapid monitoring of Hg2+ in environmental water.

Abstract
Mycotoxin contamination of food crops is a global challenge due to their unpredictable occurrence and severe adverse health effects on humans. Therefore, it is of great importance to develop effective tools to prevent the accumulation of mycotoxins through the food chain. The use of magnetic nanoparticle (MNP)-assisted biosensors for detecting mycotoxin in complex foodstuffs has garnered great interest due to the significantly enhanced sensitivity and accuracy. Within such a context, this review includes the fundamentals and recent advances (2020-2023) in the area of mycotoxin monitoring in food matrices using MNP-based aptasensors and immunosensors. In this review, we start by providing a comprehensive introduction to the design of immunosensors (natural antibody or nanobody, random or site-oriented immobilization) and aptasensors (techniques for aptamer selection, characterization, and truncation). Meanwhile, special attention is paid to the multifunctionalities of MNPs (recoverable adsorbent, versatile carrier, and signal indicator) in preparing mycotoxin-specific biosensors. Further, the contribution of MNPs to the multiplexing determination of various mycotoxins is summarized. Finally, challenges and future perspectives for the practical applications of MNP-assisted biosensors are also discussed. The progress and updates of MNP-based biosensors shown in this review are expected to offer readers valuable insights about the design of MNP-based tools for the effective detection of mycotoxins in practical applications.

Abstract
In this study, we present a novel and ultrasensitive magnetic lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) tailored for the precise detection of zearalenone, a mycotoxin with significant implications for human and animal health. A versatile and straightforward method for creating non-covalent magnetic labels is proposed and comprehensively compared with a covalent immobilization strategy. We employ the magnetic particle quantification (MPQ) technique for precise detection of the labels and characterization of their functionality, including measuring the antibody sorption density on the particle surface. Through kinetic studies using the label-free spectral phase interferometry, the rate and equilibrium constants for the binding of monoclonal antibodies with free (not bound with carrier protein) zearalenone were determined to be kon = 3.42 × 105 M-1s-1, koff = 7.05 × 10-4 s-1, and KD = 2.06 × 10-9 M. The proposed MPQ-LFIA method exhibits detection limits of 2.3 pg/mL and 7.6 pg/mL when employing magnetic labels based on covalent immobilization and non-covalent sorption, with dynamic ranges of 5.5 and 5 orders, correspondingly. We have successfully demonstrated the effective determination of zearalenone in barley flour samples contaminated with Fusarium graminearum. The ease of use and effectiveness of developed test systems further enhances their value as practical tools for addressing mycotoxin contamination challenges.

Abstract
In this study, bifunctional magnetic ZnCdSe/ZnS quantum dots nanocomposite (MQNs) were synthesized, and firstly used to develop a lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for streptomycin (STR) and dihydrostreptomycin (DHSTR) detection in milk, muscle, liver, kidney, and honey simultaneously. The fluorescence signal of MQNs was 9-fold stronger than that of the original quantum dots. The detection limits of the established MQNs-LFIA for STR and DHSTR in five samples were 0.08-1.78 μg/kg, the quantitation limits were 0.26-5.87 μg/kg, the recoveries were between 85.0% and 120.0%, and the coefficient of variations were between 0.8% and 19.3%, respectively. The sensitivity was up to 42-fold more sensitive than the reported LFIAs. The single blind test results of 25 samples were consistent with that of the confirmation method (R2 ≥ 0.99). Besides, a portable reader was self-developed and used for rapid quantification. Our study demonstrated MQNs as a promising signal-amplifying tag can be used for ultrasensitive detection of chemical contaminants in foods.

Abstract
Herein, a novel immunochromatographic assay (ICA) based on metal-organic framework-decorated polydopamine (MOF@PDA) was firstly developed for the determination of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) adulteration in functional foods. The coupling rate of MOF@PDA carrier to HCTZ antibody was as high as 91.7 %. The detection limits of the developed MOF@PDA-ICA in functional tablets and capsules were 5.93 and 4.72 μg/kg, the linear ranges were 11.2-91.91 μg/kg and 9.11-86.78 μg/kg, respectively. The sensitivity was 27-fold higher than that of the reported ICA. The recovery was 82.5-116.6 %, and coefficient of variation was 6.9-14.2 %. The results can be achieved and analyzed in 8 min with the smartphone-based detection device. The parallel tests of 23 commercial functional tablets and capsules showed that the results of the MOF@PDA-ICA were consistent with that of the LC-MS/MS (R2 > 0.99). Therefore, our method is facile, sensitive, portable, and can provide a reliable technical mean for the detection of HCTZ adulteration in functional foods.

Abstract
Mycotoxins contaminated in agricultural products are often highly carcinogenic and genotoxic to humans. With the streamlining of the food industry chain and the improvement of food safety requirements, the traditional laboratory testing mode is constantly challenged due to the expensive equipment, complex operation steps, and lag in testing results. Therefore, rapid detection methods are urgently needed in the food safety system. This review focuses on the latest strategies that can achieve rapid and on-site testing, with particular attention to the nanomaterials integrated biosensors. To provide researchers with the latest trends and inspiration in the field of rapid detection, we summarize several strategies suitable for point of care testing (POCT) of mycotoxins, including enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA), lateral flow assay (LFA), fluorescence, electrochemistry, and colorimetry assay. POCT-based strategies are all developing towards intelligence and portability, especially when combined with smartphones, making it easier to read signals for intuitive access and analysis of test data. Detection performance of the devices has also improved considerably with the integration of biosensors and nanomaterials.

Abstract
Herein, novel multifunctional magnetic prussian blue nanoenzymes (MPBNs) and colloidal gold (CG) were synthesized and used to develop two kinds of lateral flow immunoassays (LFIAs) for the detection of 38 β-agonists. Since MPBNs has a unique three-in-one function of colorimetric magnetic catalytic activities, the signal intensity and coupling ratio are 2 and 8-fold higher than that of the CG. The cut-off values of the CG-LFIA and MPBNs-LFIA for swine urine and pork are 5/5 and 0.3/0.5 μg/kg, the limits of detection are 0.19/0.29 and 0.02/0.03 μg/kg, respectively. The sensitivity of MPBNs-LFIA is 10-fold higher than that of CG-LFIA, and up to 200-fold higher than that of the reported LFIAs. The recoveries of the LFIAs are 80.0%-116.7%, with coefficients of variation of 1.4%-14.3%. Our study proved that the MPBNs have more advantages than CG, and can offer a promising signal label for ultrasensitive immunoassay techniques.

Abstract
Herein, an ultrasensitive lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA), based on metal-organic framework-decorated polydopamine (PCN-224@PDA) was first established to detect multiple sulfonylureas (SUs) in functional foods. The PCN-224@PDA was synthesized using the one-pot hydrothermal method and covalently coupled with SUs antibodies, and the coupling rate was up to 91.8%. The detection limits of the developed PCN-224@PDA-LFIA for multiple SUs in functional teas and capsules were 0.22-3.72 μg/kg and 0.40-3.71 μg/kg, and quantification limits were 0.75-8.19 μg/kg and 1.03-9.08 μg/kg, respectively. The analytical sensitivity was 128-fold higher than that of similar methods reported so far. The recovery rates ranged from 83.8 to 119.0%, with coefficients of variation of 7.6-14.4%. The parallel analysis of 20 real samples by LC-MS/MS confirmed the reliability of the proposed method. Therefore, our work offers novel, ultrasensitive, and rapid technical support for on-site monitoring of SUs in functional foods.

Abstract
Zearalenone (ZEN), one of the most frequently occurring mycotoxin contaminants in foods and feeds, poses considerable threat to human and animal health, owing to its acute and chronic toxicities. Thus, rapid and accurate detection of ZEN has attracted broad research interest. In this work, a novel and label-free chemiluminescence aptasensor based on a ZEN aptamer and a G-quadruplex DNAzyme was constructed. It was established on a competitive assay between ZEN and an auxiliary DNA for the aptamer, leading to activation of the G-quadruplex/hemin DNAzyme and subsequent signal amplification by chemiluminescence generation after substrate addition. To maximize the detection sensitivity, numerous key parameters including truncated aptamers were optimized with molecular docking analysis. Upon optimization, our aptasensor exhibited a perfect linear relationship (R2 = 0.9996) for ZEN detection in a concentration range of 1-100 ng/mL (3.14-314.10 nM) within 40 min, achieving a detection limit of 2.85 ng/mL (8.95 nM), which was a 6.7-fold improvement over that before optimization. Most importantly, the aptasensor obtained a satisfactory recovery rate of 92.84-137.27% and 84.90-124.24% for ZEN-spiked wheat and maize samples, respectively. Overall, our label-free chemiluminescence aptasensor displayed simplicity, sensitivity, specificity and practicality in real samples, indicating high application prospects in the food supply chain for rapid detection of ZEN.

Abstract
Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have attracted tremendous attention due to their superparamagnetic properties, large specific surface area, high biocompatibility, non-toxicity, large-scale production, and recyclability. More importantly, numerous hydroxyl groups (-OH) on the surface of Fe3O4 MNPs can provide coupling sites for various modifiers, forming versatile nanocomposites for applications in the energy, biomedicine, and environmental fields. With the development of science and technology, the potential of nanotechnology in the food industry has also gradually become prominent. However, the application of composite Fe3O4 MNPs in the food industry has not been systematically summarized. Herein, this article reviews composite Fe3O4 MNPs, including their properties, modifications, and physical functions, as well as their applications in the entire food industry from production to processing, storage, and detection. This review lays a solid foundation for promoting food innovation and improving food quality and safety.
