Abstract
This review addresses the current trend of replacing petroleum-based polymers in food packaging with bio-based alternatives, specifically focusing on proteins and polysaccharides. While these biopolymers exhibit excellent film-forming properties and are abundant in nature, their individual use in packaging lacks ideal plastic-like characteristics, especially in terms of mechanical and barrier properties. A recent solution involves the formulation of biocomposites through the reinforcement of one biopolymer with another (e.g., protein with a polysaccharide), significantly enhancing the physical, mechanical, and barrier properties of packaging materials. The review concentrates on the integration of proteins and polysaccharides in biocomposite materials, emphasizing their potential applications in active and intelligent food packaging systems. It covers sources, manufacturing methods, interaction mechanisms, recent developments, perspectives, and opportunities. The exploration extends to practical implementations of these biocomposites in enhancing food quality, safety, and shelf life-a green technological approach contributing to the reduction of food waste and loss.

Abstract
Developing new biodegradable packaging with superior properties and advanced functionalities is one of the most emerging research areas of interest in food packaging. In this study, PLA/PEG-based nanocomposite films incorporated with different amounts of nano glass flake (NGF) (0, 0.5, 1, and 2 phr) were fabricated via casting solution for applications in food packaging. The ATR-FTIR displayed no chemical interaction between the PLA/PEG-based matrix and NGF particles. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations exhibited a relatively smooth and homogeneous surface without defects. Incorporation of the NGF into the PLA/PEG-based matrix did not affect the color and opacity of the fabricated films. The prepared nanocomposite films were highly transparent and exhibited superior properties such as increased hydrophobicity, appreciable oxygen barrier properties, and enhanced thermal stability. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis confirmed the existence of a single glass-transition temperature (Tg) as evidence of miscibility. According to the research results, the PLA/PEG/NGF1 nanocomposite film significantly offered the best overall performance. This work has developed new insight into the potential application of nano glass flakes in food packaging.

Abstract
This study investigated the valorization of novel HG-type hybrid citrus pectins derived from three cultivars: Setoka (ST), Kanpei (KP), and Shiranui (SH), and their application as packaging materials. The physicochemical properties of these pectins and their corresponding films were evaluated and compared to commercial citrus pectin. Significant variations were observed in pectin yield (18.15-24.12 %) and other physicochemical characteristics, such as degree of esterification (DE), degree of methoxylation (DM), and monosaccharide composition, among the different cultivars. All hybrid citrus pectins were classified as high-methoxy pectin types (66.67-72.89 %) with typical structural configurations like commercial citrus pectin. However, hybrid citrus pectin films exhibited superior physical properties, including higher mechanical strength, flexibility, and lower water solubility than commercial citrus pectin film, while maintaining similar transparency and moisture content. Additionally, the films displayed smooth and uniform surface morphology, confirming their excellent film-forming properties. Correlation analysis revealed that DE positively influenced mechanical properties (r = 1.0). Furthermore, the monosaccharide composition of pectins showed strong relationships (r = 0.8-1.0) with the film's mechanical and barrier properties. These findings highlight the potential of hybrid citrus pectin as potential packaging material, and the knowledge of the structure-function relationship obtained in this study could be useful for the tailored modification of citrus pectin-based packages.

Abstract
The effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) on various properties of basil seed mucilage (a heteropolysaccharide)-polyvinyl alcohol (BSM-PVA) films was investigated. Increasing concentration of ZnONPs in BSM-PVA films reduced moisture content (from 24.73 to 17.09 %), water solubility (from 36.36 to 27.65 %), water vapor permeability (from 4.66 × 10-7 to 2.55 × 10-7 g·m/m2·Pa·h), oxygen permeability (from 2.96 to 2.13 cm3 μm/m2 d kPa), and elongation at break (from 40.34 to 29.44 %), and increased ultimate tensile strength (from 16.81 to 21.48 MPa). Color and light transmission were affected by ZnONPs concentrations. The lack of formation of new peaks, along with the displacement of peaks, indicated the formation of hydrogen bonds between ZnONPs and the film matrix. Dynamic mechanical-thermal analysis showed that storage modulus and glass transition temperature increased with the concentration of ZnONPs. Scanning electron microscopy images illustrated that the addition of ZnONPs improved film integrity. X-ray diffraction pattern showed that the crystal shape of nanoparticles was preserved in the film matrix. Films containing ZnONPs showed good antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (reductions ≥ 3 log CFU/cm2) and Escherichia coli (reductions ≥ 4 log CFU/cm2). Films containing ZnONPs also showed a suitable antifungal activity during the storage of wheat bread.

Abstract
This review discusses topics relevant to the development of antimicrobial nanocoatings and nanoscale surface modifications for medical and dental applications. Nanomaterials have unique properties compared to their micro- and macro-scale counterparts and can be used to reduce or inhibit bacterial growth, surface colonization and biofilm development. Generally, nanocoatings exert their antimicrobial effects through biochemical reactions, production of reactive oxygen species or ionic release, while modified nanotopographies create a physically hostile surface for bacteria, killing cells via biomechanical damage. Nanocoatings may consist of metal nanoparticles including silver, copper, gold, zinc, titanium, and aluminum, while nonmetallic compounds used in nanocoatings may be carbon-based in the form of graphene or carbon nanotubes, or composed of silica or chitosan. Surface nanotopography can be modified by the inclusion of nanoprotrusions or black silicon. Two or more nanomaterials can be combined to form nanocomposites with distinct chemical or physical characteristics, allowing combination of different properties such as antimicrobial activity, biocompatibility, strength, and durability. Despite their wide range of applications in medical engineering, questions have been raised regarding potential toxicity and hazards. Current legal frameworks do not effectively regulate antimicrobial nanocoatings in matters of safety, with open questions remaining about risk analysis and occupational exposure limits not considering coating-based approaches. Bacterial resistance to nanomaterials is also a concern, especially where it may affect wider antimicrobial resistance. Nanocoatings have excellent potential for future use, but safe development of antimicrobials requires careful consideration of the "One Health" agenda, appropriate legislation, and risk assessment.

Abstract
This review summarizes the latest developments in the design, fabrication, and application of various Cu-based nanofillers to prepare biopolymer-based functional packaging films, focusing on the effects of inorganic nanoparticles on the optical, mechanical, gas barrier properties, moisture sensitivity, and functional properties of the films. In addition, the potential application of Cu-based nanoparticle-added biopolymer films for fresh food preservation and the effect of nanoparticle migration on food safety were discussed. The incorporation of Cu-based nanoparticles improved the film properties with enhanced functional performance. Cu-based nanoparticles such as copper oxide, copper sulfide, copper ions, and copper alloys affect biopolymer-based films differently. The properties of composite films containing Cu-based nanoparticles depend on the concentration of the filler, the state of dispersion, and the interaction of the nanoparticles with the biopolymer matrix in the film. The composite film filled with Cu-based nanoparticles effectively extended the shelf life by maintaining the quality of various fresh foods and securing safety. However, studies on the migration characteristics and safety of copper-based nanoparticle food packaging films are currently being conducted on plastic-based films such as polyethylene, and research on bio-based films is limited.

Abstract
Tendon disorders are common medical conditions that could lead to significant disability, pain, healthcare costs, and a loss of productivity. Traditional approaches require long periods of treatment, and they largely fail due to the tissues weakening and the postoperative alterations of the normal joint mechanics. To overcome these limitations, innovative strategies for the treatment of these injuries need to be explored. The aim of the present work was the design of nano-fibrous scaffolds based on poly(butyl cyanoacrylate) (PBCA), a well-known biodegradable and biocompatible synthetic polymer, doped with copper oxide nanoparticles and caseinphosphopeptides (CPP), able to mimic the hierarchical structure of the tendon and to improve the tissue healing potential. These were developed as implants to be sutured to reconstruct the tendons and the ligaments during surgery. PBCA was synthetized, and then electrospun to produce aligned nanofibers. The obtained scaffolds were characterized for their structure and physico-chemical and mechanical properties, highlighting that CuO and CPP loading, and the aligned conformation determined an increase in the scaffold mechanical performance. Furthermore, the scaffolds loaded with CuO showed antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Moreover, human tenocytes adhesion and proliferation to the scaffolds were assessed in vitro. Finally, the antibacterial activity of the scaffolds was evaluated using Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as representative of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, respectively, demonstrating that the CuO-doped scaffolds possessed a significant antimicrobial effect against E. coli. In conclusion, scaffolds based on PBCA and doped with CuO and CPP deserve particular attention as enhancers of the tendon tissue regeneration and able to avoid bacterial adhesion. Further investigation on the scaffold efficacy in vivo will assess their capability for enhancing the tendon ECM restoration in view of accelerating their translation to the clinic.

Abstract
Bio-inks consisting of pectin (Pec), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO) were used to prepare films by solution casting and 3D-printing methods. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was conducted to observe that the surface of samples made by 3D bioprinter was denser and more compact than the solution cast samples. In addition, Pec/CMC/ZnO made by 3D-bioprinter (Pec/CMC/ZnO-3D) revealed enhanced water vapor barrier, hydrophobicity, and mechanical properties. Pec/CMC/ZnO-3D also showed strong antimicrobial activity within 12 h against S. aureus and E. coli O157: H7 bacterial strains compared to the solution cast films. Further, the nanocomposite bio-inks used for 3D printing did not show cytotoxicity towards normal human dermal fibroblast (NDFB) cells but enhanced the fibroblast proliferation with increasing exposure concentration of the sample. The study provided two important inferences. Firstly, the 3D bioprinting method can be an alternative, better, and more practical method for fabricating biopolymer film instead of solution casting, which is the main finding of this work defining its novelty. Secondly, the Pec/CMC/ZnO can potentially be used as 3D bio-inks to fabricate functional films or scaffolds and biomedical applications.

Abstract
AbstractThis paper reports the preparation of copper(I) oxide nanoparticles deposited on yttrium oxide and copper(II) oxide in the presence of acerola and white willow extracts. Through the use of natural compounds, it was possible to modify the surface of the Y2O3 and CuO carriers allowing Cu2O to be deposited to a greater extent, thus improving the antibacterial properties of the materials. Cu2O nanoparticles, by being deposited on a carrier, enable an increase in the contact surface of the nanoparticles with microorganisms, which react to form reactive oxygen species. Cu2O nanoparticles with sizes of about 38 nm and 76 nm were obtained for Y2O3- and CuO-deposited nanoparticles, respectively. The Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli shown a greater sensitivity to the degree of inhibition compared to Staphylococcus Aureus already at a concentration of 250 mg/L. For almost all materials, the inhibition level remained above 50% after 48 h. Analysis of the effect of the antimicrobial properties of the materials against Candida albicans fungus shown high activity which was obtained only at the highest concentrations of 8000 mg/L, for which the degree of growth inhibition was 100% also after 48 h for both Y2O3–Cu2O and CuO–Cu2O.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of a novel electrochemical biosensor comprising of cupric oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) mediated poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) composite film with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a binder/template support using the solution casting method for the detection of a biomolecule i.e., ascorbic acid (AA). The specimens were characterized for surface, chemical, mechanical, optical, and electrochemical attributes. The results expressed regular mediation of CuO NPs in the PHB/PVA matrix towards nanobiocomposite formation with enhanced crystallinity, inter-molecular interactions, mechanical, and electrochemical attributes, and decreased hydrophilicity and bandgap, thus being useful in potential optoelectronic devices. The synthesized biocomposite film exhibited a tensile strength of 86.24 ± 4.10 N which might be due to reinforcement/uniform dispersion of the CuO nanofiller in the PHB-based matrix. The PHB/CuO composite, then, deposited on a glassy carbon electrode surface exhibited good electrocatalytic activity towards the AA in the aqueous media even at low analyte concentrations. Such modified electrode surfaces with metal/biopolymer complex could find possible applications in the detection of other bioactive molecules.

Abstract
Gelatine is an excellent substitute for biodegradable packaging materials; nevertheless, it is necessary to mix it with other polymers due to its poor mechanical and high hydrophilicity. In the present study, we used Cylindropuntia fulgida mucilage (CF) as main constituent and gelatine (GTN). The Euphorbia caducifolia extract (ECE) was incorporated in concentrations of 0, 1, 5, 10, 20 %, and its influence on the film's morphological, thermal, mechanical, and water vapor barrier properties was assessed. The surface of fabricated CF/GTN/ECE biocomposite films was more homogeneous and smoother with the high concentration of in ECE. The elongation at break improved from 2 to 60.59 %, and WVP enhanced from 3.34 to 2.59 10-4 g mm/mm2 day kPa and highest antimicrobial activity of 3.62 ± 0.71 Log CFU g-1 when CF/GTN was incorporated with 20 % ECE. Incorporating CF and ECE 10 to 20 % makes these films a good substitute for the packaging of food products.

Abstract
To meet the demands for more effective and ecofriendly food packaging strategies, the potential of nisin-loaded rhamnolipid functionalized nanofillers (rhamnosomes) has been explored after embedding in hydroxypropyl-methylcellulose (HPMC) and κ-carrageenan (κ-CR)-based packaging films. It was observed that intrinsically active rhamnosomes based nanofillers greatly improved the mechanical and optical properties of nano-active packaging (NAP) films. Incorporation of rhamnosomes resulted in higher tensile strength (5.16 ± 0.06 MPa), Young’s modulus (2777 ± 0.77 MPa), and elongation (2.58 ± 0.03%) for NAP than active packaging containing free nisin (2.96 ± 0.03 MPa, 1107 ± 0.67 MPa, 1.48 ± 0.06%, respectively). NAP demonstrated a homogenous distribution of nanofillers in the biopolymer matrix as elucidated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed that NAP prepared with nisin-loaded rhamnosomes was thermally stable even above 200 °C. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses revealed that addition of nisin in nanofillers resulted in a slight increase in Tg (108.40 °C), indicating thermal stability of NAP. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed slight shift in all characteristic bands of nano-active packaging, which indicated the embedding of rhamnosomes inside the polymer network without any chemical interaction. Finally, when tested on chicken breast filets and cheese slices under refrigerated storage conditions, NAP demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity (up to 4.5 log unit reduction) and inhibited the growth of Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli. These results suggest that HPMC and κ-CR-based NAP containing functionalized nanofillers can serve as an innovative packaging material for the food industry to improve the safety, quality, and shelf-life of dairy and meat products.

Abstract
Kefiran is a heteropolysaccharide biopolymer usually extracted from kefir grains cultured in cow milk. Due to the lack of information on exopolysaccharides from other types of animal milk, in the present study, cow, buffalo and goat milks were used as raw materials for fermentation. The kefiran extractions from kefir grains were carried out with cold water (method I), hot water (method II) and mild heated water-ultrasound (method III), and then the recovery yield and the physicochemical properties of the kefirans were evaluated to establish the influence of both the extraction conditions and the type of milk. The highest yield was recorded for the cow kefiran using method III (4.79%). The recoveries of goat and buffalo kefirans with methods II and III were similar (2.75–2.81%). Method I had the lowest yields (0.15–0.48%). The physicochemical characteristics were studied with Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy showed the same qualitative profile for all the samples, regardless of the method and the type of milk, confirming that the extraction methods did not affect the chemical structure of the kefirans. Otherwise, the thermal and morphological features of the samples showed differences according to both the type of the milk and the extraction method. The kefiran samples were very thermally stable, having a temperature of degradation (Td) in the range from 264 to 354 °C. The resulting morphological and thermal differences could lead to different practical applications of kefirans in the fields of nutrition and pharmacology.

Abstract
Plastics around the globe have been a matter of grave concern due to the unavoidable habits of human mankind. Taking waste statistics in India for the year 2019-20 into account, the data of 60 major cities show that the generation of plastic waste stands tall at around 26,000 tonnes/day, of which only about 60 % is recycled. A majority of the non-recycled plastic waste is petrochemical-based packaging materials that are non-biodegradable in nature. Vegetative/food waste is another global issue, evidenced by vastly populated countries such as China and India accounting for 91 and 69 tonnes of food wastage, respectively in 2019. The mitigation of plastic packaging issues has led to key scientific developments, one of which is biodegradable materials. However, there is a way that these two waste-related issues can be fronted as the analogy of "taking two shots with the same arrow". The presence of various bio-compounds such as proteins, cellulose, starch, lipids, and waxes, etc., in food and vegetative waste, creates an opportunity for the development of biodegradable packaging films. Although these flexible packaging films have limitations in terms of mechanical, permeation, and moisture absorption characteristics, they can be fine-tuned in order to convert the biobased raw material into a realizable packaging product. These strategies could work in replacing petrochemical-based non-biodegradable packaging plastics which are used in enormous quantities for various household and commercial packaging applications to combat the ever-increasing pollution in highly populated countries. This paper presents a systematic review based on modern scientific tools of the literature available with a major emphasis on the past decade and aims to serve as a standard resource for the development of biodegradable packaging films from food/vegetative waste.

Abstract
Background. Food nanopackaging helps maintain food quality against physical, chemical, and storage instability factors. Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) can improve biopolymers’ mechanical features and barrier properties. This will lead to antimicrobial and antioxidant activities in food packaging to extend the shelf life. Scope and Approach. Edible coatings based on carbohydrate biopolymers have improved the quality of packaging. Several studies have addressed the role of carbohydrate biopolymers and incorporated nanoparticles to enhance food packets’ quality as active nanopackaging. Combined with nanoparticles, these biopolymers create film coatings with an excellent barrier property against transmissions of gases such as O2 and CO2. Key Findings and Conclusions. This review describes the CuO-biopolymer composites, including chitosan, agar, cellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, cellulose nanowhiskers, carrageenan, alginate, starch, and polylactic acid, as food packaging films. Here, we reviewed different fabrication techniques of CuO biocomposites and the impact of CuONPs on the physical, mechanical, barrier, thermal stability, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of carbohydrate-based films.

Abstract
The biodegradability and mechanical properties of polysaccharides are dependent on their architecture (linear or branched) as well as their crystallinity (size of crystals and crystallinity percent). The amount of crystalline zones in the polysaccharide significantly governs their ultimate properties and applications (from packaging to biomedicine). Although synthesis, characterization, and properties of polysaccharides have been the subject of several review papers, the effects of crystallization kinetics and crystalline domains on the properties and application have not been comprehensively addressed. This review places focus on different aspects of crystallization of polysaccharides as well as applications of crystalline polysaccharides. Crystallization of cellulose, chitin, chitosan, and starch, as the main members of this family, were discussed. Then, application of the aforementioned crystalline polysaccharides and nano-polysaccharides as well as their physical and chemical interactions were overviewed. This review attempts to provide a complete picture of crystallization-property relationship in polysaccharides.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The use of chemical products to neutralize microorganisms has always been a subject of discussion and research for alternative solutions, indeed, the use of essential oils has been a promising natural methodology. METHODS In our study we used the essential oils from different parts of Thapsia transtagana (Apiaceae), obtained by hydrodistillation, were identified and using Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detection (GC/FID) methods and evaluated against several bacteria of Gram- and Gram + bacteria. Disk diffusion, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Microbicidal Concentration (MMC) methods have been used. Free radical-scavenging activity and insecticidal activity of Thapsia transtagana essential oils were also identified. RESULTS Majority products from different parts of Thapsia transtagana essential oil identified by GC-MS and GC/FID methods are 2,6-Dimethylnaphthalene, Pinane and Hexahydrofarnesyl acetone. The highest activity was found against Staphylococcus aureus using inflorescence essential oil with minimal inhibitory concentration value for 0,56 μg/μL. Insecticidal activity was also the subject of this study, roots and inflorescence essential oils demonstrated to have a remarkable potent against Acanthoscelides obtectus and Sitophilus oryzae using contact assessment, inhalation assessment and ingestion assessment tests. Insecticidal activity assay results showed a significant enhancement of mortality in both test insect pest on increasing the dose and exposure period. In the other hand, the different essential oils of Thapsia transtagana were evaluated for their radical scavenging activities by means of the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The strongest scavenging activity was observed in inflorescences essential oil fraction scavenged radicals effectively at 100% using 500 mgL-1 concentration. CONCLUSION Its essential oils were proved to have strong antimicrobial, insecticidal and antioxidant activities that allows it to be used by the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries as natural preservative.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a combination of zinc oxide (ZnO-N) nanoparticles and fennel essential oil (FEO) on the functional and antimicrobial properties of potato starch films. Films based on potato starch containing a combination of ZnO-N (1, 3, and 5%(w/w)) and FEO (1, 2, and 3% (w/w)) produced by casting method and water solubility, water absorption capacity (WAC), barrier properties, mechanical properties, color indexes, and antimicrobial activity of the films against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Aspergillus flavus were studied. The combination of ZnO-N and FEO had a significant decreasing effect on solubility, WAC, water vapor and oxygen permeability, elongation, and L* index. These additives had an increasing impact on tensile strength, Yang's modulus, and a* and b* indexes (p < .05). By increasing the concentration of ZnO-N and FEO, the antimicrobial activities of bionanocomposite films significantly increased (p < .05). Both ZnO-N and FEO had a significant effect in this respect, although the effects of ZnO-N were more significant. In conclusion, an excellent synergistic effect of ZnO-N and FEO was observed in potato starch films.

Abstract
The promotion of sustainable packaging is part of the European Green Deal and plays a key role in the EU’s social and political strategy. One option is the use of renewable resources and biomass waste as raw materials for polymer production. Lignocellulose biomass from annual and perennial industrial crops and agricultural residues are a major source of polysaccharides, proteins, and lignin and can also be used to obtain plant-based extracts and essential oils. Therefore, these biomasses are considered as potential substitute for fossil-based resources. Here, the status quo of bio-based polymers is discussed and evaluated in terms of properties related to packaging applications such as gas and water vapor permeability as well as mechanical properties. So far, their practical use is still restricted due to lower performance in fundamental packaging functions that directly influence food quality and safety, the length of shelf life, and thus the amount of food waste. Besides bio-based polymers, this review focuses on plant extracts as active packaging agents. Incorporating extracts of herbs, flowers, trees, and their fruits is inevitable to achieve desired material properties that are capable to prolong the food shelf life. Finally, the adoption potential of packaging based on polymers from renewable resources is discussed from a bioeconomy perspective.

Abstract
Textiles functionalized with cupric oxide (CuO) nanoparticles have become a promising option to prevent the spread of diseases due to their antimicrobial properties, which strongly depend on the structure and morphology of the nanoparticles and the method used for the functionalization process. This article presents a review of work focused on textiles functionalized with CuO nanoparticles, which were classified into two groups, namely, in situ and ex situ. Moreover, the analyzed bacterial strains, the resistance of the antimicrobial properties of textiles to washing processes, and their cytotoxicity were identified. Finally, the possible antimicrobial mechanisms that could develop in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were described.

Abstract
A new impregnation method was tested in this study. Without a stabilizing agent, silver and copper metallic compounds were directly impregnated on activated carbon using vacuum impregnation followed by drying at 100°C and vacuum impregnation followed by thermal decomposition at 350°C in an ambient atmosphere. The effect of thermal decomposition on the structural, morphological, and textural characteristics of the modified nanomaterials was analysed by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-Ray, and transmission electron microscopy. The characteristics of the produced materials were not altered. Silver and CuO nanoparticles were identified in the samples with average diameters ranging from 33.3-36.8 nm and 29.0-33.3 nm, respectively. The materials were tested for their antibacterial capacity and for their potential to leach Ag and Cu into water, thus analysing the effect of the thermal decomposition process on the impregnation process. The vacuum impregnation process followed by thermal decomposition produced the best results, with the resultant material reducing bacterial abundance by 5.31-6.61 log and leaching only low concentrations of metals into the water (Ag - 0.010-0.025 mg L-1 and Cu - 0.270-0.361 mg L-1). Samples produced without the thermal decomposition step reached bacterial reductions of 1.86-1.97 log and yielded higher concentrations of metals in the water (Ag - 0.051-0.086 mg L-1 and Cu - 0.819-0.894 mg L-1).

Abstract
Bioactive packaging is an alternative new technology for preserving the quality and safety of food products with providing health benefits. In this way, the Lactobacillus plantarum, cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and inulin incorporated carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) based probiotic nanocomposite film was prepared. The fabricated film samples were characterized by FTIR, FE-SEM, XRD and DSC analyses, that the obtained results indicated the good compatibility between CMC, CNF, and inulin. As a result, the CMC-based probiotic films containing CNF and inulin exhibited satisfactory water barrier and mechanical properties. Additionally, the viability of probiotic bacteria in the CMC-based films was significantly (p < 0.05) increased (36%) by addition of inulin as a prebiotic ingredient during storage time. Probiotic film sample showed antibacterial activity against nine pathogens and also extended the chicken fillet shelf life when wrapped on the meat. In conclusion, the application of CNF and inulin incorporated CMC-based probiotic nanocomposite film as a bioactive food packaging system opens up a new horizon for improving the shelf life of food products and providing the health benefits for consumers.

Abstract
Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based functional films were prepared by incorporating curcumin (0.5 and 1.0 wt% based on CMC), ZnO (1 wt% based on CMC). The FE-SEM showed that the ZnO and curcumin were uniformly dispersed in the CMC film. The CMC/curcumin/ZnO composite films showed significantly increased UV-barrier without much sacrifice of transparency, and they also showed increased water vapor barrier properties. The mechanical properties of the composite film were slightly reduced by the addition of 1 wt% curcumin, while unchanged by the addition of 1 wt% ZnO, but improved by the combined addition of curcumin (0.5 wt%) and ZnO (1 wt%). CMC films incorporated with curcumin showed strong antioxidant activity, while films incorporated with ZnO showed strong antimicrobial activity against foodborne pathogenic bacteria. The CMC film with the addition of ZnO (1 wt%) and curcumin (1 wt%) (CMC/Cur1.0/ZnO1.0) was optimal for producing functional films with antioxidant and antibacterial properties.

Abstract
The use of polysaccharide-based materials presents an eco-friendly technological solution, by reducing dependence on fossil resources while reducing a product's carbon footprint, when compared to conventional plastic packaging materials. This review discusses the potential of polysaccharides as a raw material to produce multifunctional materials for food packaging applications. The covered areas include the recent innovations and properties of the polysaccharide-based materials. Emphasis is given to hemicelluloses, marine polysaccharides, and bacterial exopolysaccharides and their potential application in the latest trends of food packaging materials, including edible coatings, intelligent films, and thermo-insulated aerogel packaging.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the antimicrobial properties of nanocomposite thin TiO2 :Cu:Ag films on Pseudomonas putida as a natural isolate and an opportunistic pathogen. Several different methods were used to compare the antibacterial effect of thin TiO2 :Cu:Ag layers obtained by radiofrequency magnetron sputter deposition against P. putida: optical density of the bacterial suspension, most probable number of survived cells, dehydrogenase activity inhibition, scanning electron microscopy images, atomic flame absorption spectroscopy, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) luminescent assay. Optical density measurements and most probable plate count were in agreement and showed a strong bactericidal effect of the as-deposited and only bacteriostatic effect of the annealed coatings with the same metal content on tested bacteria. As the metal quantity in the medium rises during the first hour of the experiment, it could be suggested that this is the main reason for cell death. ATP-luminescent assay showed up to 18-fold reduction of the signal. It was compared with other microbiological and biochemical assays to prove the strong antibacterial effect of nanocomposite thin TiO2 :Cu:Ag coatings with the possibilities of medical applications. Protection of medical devices against infections is a significant current challenge raised by an increasing number of medical devices-associated infections and microbial resistance to conventional antibiotic and multidrug treatments. Deposition of antimicrobial coatings is one of the current approaches to mitigate the problem.

Abstract
Edible coatings and films (ECF) are employed as matrixes for incorporating antimicrobial nanoparticles (NPs), and then they are applied on the fruits and vegetables to prolong shelf life and enhance storage quality. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the preparation, antimicrobial properties and mechanisms, surface and physical qualities of ECF containing antimicrobial NPs, and its efficient application to vegetables and fruits as well. Following an introduction on the properties of the main edible coating materials, the preparation technologies of ECF with NPs are summarized. The antimicrobial activity of ECF with NPs against the tested microorganism was observed by many researchers. This might be mainly due to the electrostatic interaction between the cationic polymer or free metal ions and the charged cell membrane, the photocatalytic reaction of NPs, the detachment of free metal ion, and partly due to the antimicrobial activity of edible materials. Moreover, their physical, mechanical and releasing properties are discussed in detail, which might be influenced by the concentration of NPs. The preservation potential on the quality of fruits and vegetables indicates that various ECF with NPs might be used as the ideal materials for food application. Following the introduction on these characteristics, an attempt is made to predict future trends in this field.
