Development and characterization of PVA-Starch active films incorporated with β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex embedding lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) oil

Development and characterization of a double-layer smart packaging system consisting of polyvinyl alcohol electrospun nanofibers and gelatin film for fish fillet

This study aimed to develop a double-layer film composed of an intelligent, gelatin-based film integrated with active polyvinyl alcohol electrospun nanofibers (PVANFs). Eggplant skin extract (ESE), a colorimetric indicator, was incorporated into the gelatin-based film at varying concentrations ranging from 0 % to 8 % w/w. The gelatin film containing 8 % ESE was identified as the optimal formulation based on its superior color indication, water barrier, and mechanical properties. Savory essential oil (SEO)-loaded PVANFs were electrospun onto the optimized gelatin film to fabricate the double-layer film. Analysis of the chemical and crystalline structures and the double-layer film's thermal properties confirmed the gelatin film's physical integration with PVANFs. Morphological examination revealed a smooth surface on the film and a uniform fibrillar structure within the PVANFs. Furthermore, the developed double-layer film effectively detected spoilage in trout fish while controlling pH, oxidation, and microbial changes during storage.

Experimental and theoretical characterization of the release kinetic of carvacrol as inclusion complexes with β-cyclodextrin in poly(lactic acid) and Mater-Bi® processed by supercritical impregnation

The incorporation of active compounds into polymeric matrices using traditional methods has several drawbacks mainly due to the high volatility and thermal sensitivity of these substances. A solution to this problem could be the incorporation of bioactive compounds forming inclusion complexes as a strategy to improve the chemical stability, bioactivity and achieve controlled release. In this work, β-cyclodextrin/carvacrol inclusion complex was prepared by spray drying to be incorporated into poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and Mater-Bi® films by supercritical CO2 impregnation. The impregnation process was carried out at pressures of 10, 15 and 20 MPa and at 40 °C. Both polymers showed the highest amount of incorporated inclusion complex at 15 MPa, where the percentage of impregnation varied from 0.6 % to 7.1 % in Mater-Bi® and PLA, respectively. Release tests for PLA films impregnated with inclusion complex showed a slow release of the active compound, which did not reach equilibrium after 350 h under the experimental conditions. This prolonged release was not observed in Mater-Bi® due to the lower incorporation of the inclusion complex. The release rate was described herein by a comprehensive phenomenological model considering the decomplexation kinetics combined with the equilibrium and mass transfer expressions.

Lemongrass essential oil micro- and nanoencapsulation for industrial application: Production techniques and potential applications

Due to its characteristic aroma and diverse therapeutic properties, lemongrass essential oil (LEO) has garnered increased attention in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries. However, LEO's volatile nature, low chemical stability, and limited solubility in water limits its applications in the industry. Micro- and nanoencapsulation technologies emerge as a promising solution to overcome these challenges. A systematic methodology involving keyword searches in databases was employed to gather relevant literature on LEO micro- and nanoencapsulation, providing an extensive overview of techniques, processes, encapsulating materials, and possible applications. Beyond established methods, emerging techniques were explored. This review highlights the critical role of encapsulation in enhancing the thermal and chemical stability, applicability, bioavailability, and controlled release of LEO.

Soy protein isolate film activated by black seed oil nanoemulsion as a novel packaging for shelf-life extension of bulk bread

This paper investigates the addition of lecithin-emulsified black seed oil (BSO) nanoemulsions (LNEO) and whey protein isolate-stabilized Pickering emulsions (WPEO) to soy protein isolate (SPI)-based films and their effect on improving the shelf life of bread slices. The half-life of antioxidant activity, water vapor permeability, biodegradability, density, color difference, and film thickness significantly increased (p < .05) when BSO was added. However, the incorporation of BSO significantly reduced the solubility, tensile strength, strain to break (except for WPEO), and transparency (p < .05) of the samples. The interaction between SPI film and BSO-loaded nanocarriers, as well as the morphological properties of films, was evaluated using FT-IR and FE-SEM. SPI-based films containing LNEO-5% and WPEO-5% were selected based on their mechanical and barrier properties. The effect of films on the shelf life of bread slices was investigated for 17 days of storage. LNEO samples obtained the most acceptable results in the bread in terms of sensory evaluation and color properties. According to the results, bread slices packed in SPI film containing LNEO-5% showed no signs of mold growth until the 17th day of storage, whereas the sample packed in a low-density polyethylene bag began to corrupt on the 6th day. This study highlights the potential of BSO-loaded SPI films as a novel active packaging for the bakery industry.

Preparation and characterization of active films based on oregano essential oil microcapsules/soybean protein isolate/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose

This study aimed to prepare oregano essential oil microcapsules (EOMs) by the active coalescence method using gelatin and sodium alginate as wall materials and oregano essential oil (OEO) as the core material. EOMs were added to the soybean protein isolate (SPI)/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) matrix to prepare SPI-CMC-EOM active films, and the physical and chemical features of the active films and EOMs were characterized. The results showed that the microencapsulated OEO could protect its active ingredients. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that EOMs were highly compatible with the film matrix. The solubility of active films decreased upon adding EOMs, and their ultraviolet resistance and thermal stability also improved. When the added amount of EOMs was 5 %, the active films had the best mechanical properties and the lowest water vapor permeability. The active films prepared under this condition had excellent comprehensive performance. Also, adding EOMs considerably enhanced the antioxidant of the active films and endowed them with antibacterial properties. The application of the SPI-CMC-EOM films to A. bisporus effectively delayed senescence and maintained the freshness of the postharvest A. bisporus. This study provided a theoretical foundation for the incorporation of EOMs into active films based on biological materials.

Development and characterization of a new potato starch/watermelon peel pectin composite film loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles and microencapsulated Lycium barbarum leaf flavonoids and its use in the Tan mutton packaging

Reinforced edible film with active nanoparticles has been in increasing demand as a new technology to improve the quality and extend the shelf-life of muscle foods. The study aimed to fabricate and characterize a novel potato starch (Pst)/watermelon peel pectin (Wpp) composite film with the microencapsulated Lycium barbarum leaf flavonoids (MLF) and nano-TiO2 (Pst/Wpp/MLF/TiO2) and further apply the film in Tan mutton preservation. The moisture content, thickness and water vapor permeability (WVP) of the composite film were relatively increased with increasing the percentage of MLF, while nano-TiO2 had slight influence on the thickness, but leaded to a significantly decreased the moisture content and WVP. Also, the SEM images showed that the roughness and porosity were created on the film surface by adding MLF and nano-TiO2. FTIR revealed electrostatic and hydrogen bond interactions between the components in the film system. Meanwhile, MLF and nano-TiO2 effectively enhanced the mechanical strength, UV-barrier, controlled-release, thermal stability, antimicrobial and antioxidation properties of the Pst/Wpp film. Also, the composite film containing MLF and nano-TiO2 significantly inhibited the growth of microorganisms and chemical deterioration of mutton samples, which suggested that such film has potential as a prospective active packaging for preserving Tan mutton.

Carvacrol/β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex as a fumigant to control decay caused by Penicillium digitatum on Shatangju mandarin slices

Preservation and microorganism control of fresh-cut fruit pose a persistent challenge in the food industry. To address this issue, we prepared a β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) inclusion complex containing carvacrol using a coprecipitation method and employed it for the non-contact fumigation of fresh-cut Shatangju mandarin slices. This biodegradable and safe preservative offers an effective means to combat spoilage and ensure product quality. We confirmed the formation of the encapsulated structure of the inclusion complex through various characterization methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential thermal analysis (DTA). We also demonstrated the inhibitory effect of this preservative on Penicillium digitatum and its associated spoilage both in vitro and in vivo. The incidence and severity were significant lower in the inclusion complex-treated group (75.0% and 46.7%, respectively) compared to the group treated with pure carvacrol (100% and 69.2%, respectively). In addition, fruit freshness parameters and sensory evaluation showed that the inclusion complex treatment effectively maintained the overall quality of the fruit and achieved the highest consumer acceptance.

Plant Antimicrobials for Food Quality and Safety: Recent Views and Future Challenges

The increasing demand for natural, safe, and sustainable food preservation methods drove research towards the use of plant antimicrobials as an alternative to synthetic preservatives. This review article comprehensively discussed the potential applications of plant extracts, essential oils, and their compounds as antimicrobial agents in the food industry. The antimicrobial properties of several plant-derived substances against foodborne pathogens and spoilage microorganisms, along with their modes of action, factors affecting their efficacy, and potential negative sensory impacts, were presented. The review highlighted the synergistic or additive effects displayed by combinations of plant antimicrobials, as well as the successful integration of plant extracts with food technologies ensuring an improved hurdle effect, which can enhance food safety and shelf life. The review likewise emphasized the need for further research in fields such as mode of action, optimized formulations, sensory properties, safety assessment, regulatory aspects, eco-friendly production methods, and consumer education. By addressing these gaps, plant antimicrobials can pave the way for more effective, safe, and sustainable food preservation strategies in the future.

Microencapsulation with Different Starch-Based Polymers for Improving Oxidative Stability of Cold-Pressed Hickory (Carya cathayensis Sarg.) Oil

Hickory (Carya cathayensis Sarg.) oil is a nutrient-dense edible woody oil, with its unsaturated fatty acids accounting for more than 90% of total ones, and liable to oxidation spoilage. To efficiently improve its stability and expand its application fields, the microencapsulation of cold-pressed hickory oil (CHO) by the molecular embedding method and freeze-drying technique was performed using malt dextrin (MD), hydroxylpropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD), β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), or porous starch (PS) as a wall material. Two wall materials and/or their CHO microcapsulates (CHOM) with higher encapsulation efficiencies (EE) were selected to carry out physical and chemical characterizations using laser particle size diffractometer, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, derivative thermogravimetry, and oxidative stability tests. Results indicated β-CDCHOM and PSCHOM had significantly higher EE values (80.40% and 75.52%) than MDCHOM and HP-β-CDCHOM (39.36% and 48.32%). The particle sizes of the two microcapsules selected were both widely distributed with their spans being more than 1 µm and a certain degree of polydispersity. Microstructural and chemical characterizations indicated that β-CDCHOM had comparatively stable structure and good thermal stability compared with PSCHOM. Storage performances under light, oxygen, and temperature showed that β-CDCHOM was superior to PSCHOM, especially in terms of thermal and oxidative stability. This study demonstrates that β-CD embedding can be applied to improve the oxidative stability of vegetable oils such as hickory oil and act as a means of preparing functional supplementary material.

Beyond brewing: β-acid rich hop extract in the development of a multifunctional polylactic acid-based food packaging

Hops' (Humulus lupulus L.) phytochemicals are well known for their bioactivity. In the present study, the functional properties of hop extract rich in β-acids, as potassium-salts structures (KBA), were investigated to develop a sustainable active food packaging. Polylactic acid (PLA)-based sheets were incorporated with increasing concentrations of hop extract (0.1-5 % w/w in terms of KBA) and characterized through performance and bioactive properties. KBA-added sheets presented decreased crystallinity and affected mechanical and thermal properties, especially with higher KBA amounts. The sheets' surface hydrophobicity gradually decreased by KBA-extract addition, while the water vapor permeability was not affected. A Fickian diffuse behavior and a better fit to application in fatty foods were observed during release tests. UV-blocking and antioxidant properties were improved by KBA incorporation. Furthermore, results from antibacterial assays revealed great susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes towards sheets added with 5 % of KBA. Moreover, the atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations revealed that KBA led to strong effects on the cell membranes of both bacteria, including disruption of membrane integrity and cell death. Therefore, this study is a sign of great prospects of hop β-acids use, as KBA compound, in the production of sustainable active packaging for safe food shelf-life extension.

The Caucasian Whortleberry Extract/Myrtle Essential Oil Loaded Active Films: Physicochemical Properties and Effects on Quality Parameters of Wrapped Turkey Breast Meat

In this research work, the effects of myrtle essential oil (MEO) and Caucasian whortleberry extract (CWE) as natural additives were investigated on mechanical, physico-mechanical and antimicrobial properties of gellan/polyvinyl alcohol (G/PVA) film. Then, optimal blend active films were used for the wrapping of turkey breast meat stored at low temperature (4 ± 1 °C) for 15 days and chemical and sensory properties of wrapped meats were evaluated. The addition of MEO and CWE decreased tensile strength and increased the strain at the break of the films (p ≤ 0.05). Additionally, with increasing the amount of MEO and CWE, the permeability to water vapor (WVP) and the moisture content (MC) of the films decreased (p ≤ 0.05). MIC test showed that MEO and CWE were effective against S. aureus, E. coli, S. typhimurium, and P. fluorescens. at the concentrations of 5-6 and 15-17 mg/mL, respectively. Different microbiological, chemical, and sensory tests indicated that active films significantly enhanced the shelf life of turkey breast meat (p ≤ 0.05). Therefore, based on our finding in this study, the use of these active and biodegradable packagings can be effective and useful for protecting the microbial and sensory quality of turkey breast meat.

Effects of starch/polyvinyl alcohol active film containing cinnamaldehyde on the quality of large yellow croaker (Pseudosciaena crocea) proteins during frozen storage

This study aimed to investigate the effects of starch/polyvinyl alcohol (starch/PVA) film containing cinnamaldehyde (CIN) with different humidity treatment on the quality changes of large yellow croaker (Pseudosciaena crocea) under vacuum packaging during frozen storage. It was evaluated by measuring the water loss, water migration, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid (TBA), free amino acids (FAA) content, myofibril secondary and tertiary structure and microstructure of large yellow croaker. Compared with control group, the starch/PVA films could inhibit the water loss, water migration, protein degradation, lipid oxidation and microstructure damage of fish. The film containing CIN with higher humidity treatment showed the best protective effect for large yellow croaker. The film with higher humidity treatment showed better to maintain the quality of fish than that with low humidity treatment. Therefore, starch/PVA active film containing CIN with high humidity treatment showed good fresh-keeping potential in the frozen storage of aquatic products.

Development of antioxidant active packaging films with slow release properties incorporated with tea polyphenols-loaded porous starch microcapsules

Slow release active packaging films can realize the sustained release of active agents and prolong the shelf life of food. For this aim, a novel slow release active polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film was developed by using solution casting method. With porous starch loaded with tea polyphenols (PSTP) as core material and maltodextrin (MD) as wall material, PSTP@MD microcapsules were prepared using freeze drying method and used as slow release carrier of tea polyphenols (TP) in the active films. The interactions between PSTP@MD microcapsules and PVA molecular chains were physical interactions. In addition, the relative crystallinity of the slow release active films was reduced to 23.74 %. The addition of PSTP@MD microcapsules can enhance the ductility of active films and reduce the water content and swelling degree of active films by 46.74 % and 54.38 %, respectively. Moreover, the thermal stability, water vapor and ultraviolet barrier properties of active films were promoted. The transparency and antioxidant activity of active films was high, and the radical scavenging activity of active films was 58 %. The encapsulation of TP with PSTP@MD microcapsules can realize the slow release of TP. The slow release active films had antioxidant activity and sustained release properties, which could be used as an active packaging film to extend the shelf life of food.

Characterization and Application in Packaging Grease of Gelatin-Sodium Alginate Edible Films Cross-Linked by Pullulan

Gelatin-sodium alginate-based edible films cross-linked with pullulan were prepared using the solution casting method. FTIR spectroscopy demonstrated the existence of hydrogen bonding interactions between the components, and scanning electron microscopy observed the component of the films, revealing electrostatic interactions and thus explaining the differences in the properties of the blend films. The best mechanical properties and oxygen barrier occurred at a 1:1 percentage of pullulan to gelatin (GP11) with sodium alginate dosing for modification. Furthermore, GP11 demonstrated the best thermodynamic properties by DSC analysis, the highest UV barrier (94.13%) and the best oxidation resistance in DPPH tests. The results of storage experiments using modified edible films encapsulated in fresh fish liver oil showed that GP11 retarded grease oxidation by inhibiting the rise in peroxide and anisidine values, while inappropriate amounts of pullulan had a pro-oxidative effect on grease. The correlation between oil oxidation and material properties was investigated, and water solubility and apparent color characteristics were also assessed.

Development of active packaging films based on liquefied shrimp shell chitin and polyvinyl alcohol containing β-cyclodextrin/cinnamaldehyde inclusion

To maintain the freshness of fruits and to meet environmental and consumer needs, a biobased packaging film with long-lasting antimicrobial activity was developed in this article. Liquefied ball-milled shrimp shell chitin/polyvinyl alcohol (LBSC/PVA) blend films containing varying concentrations (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 wt%) of the β-cyclodextrin/cinnamaldehyde (β-CD/CA) inclusion were prepared and characterized. The association between β-CD and CA and the sustained release behavior of CA were explored. The physicochemical property, antimicrobial activity and food preservation performance of the films were investigated. Results showed that CA was successfully encapsulated into the cavity of CD by host-guest interactions, which greatly improved the sustained release of CA. The 3 wt% β-CD/CA/LBSC/PVA blend film showed optimized mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 41.5 MPa and an elongation at break of 810 %. In addition, the incorporation of β-CD/CA inclusion significantly enhanced the antimicrobial activity and food preservation performance of the blend films. Moreover, the 3 wt% β-CD/CA/LBSC/PVA blend film exhibited evidently longer lasting antimicrobial activity and cherry tomato preservation performance than the 3 wt% CA/LBSC/PVA blend film, further demonstrating the critical role of β-CD in delaying CA release. These novel β-CD/CA/LBSC/PVA blend films may have a potential use in active food packaging.

Current Trends in the Utilization of Essential Oils for Polysaccharide- and Protein-Derived Food Packaging Materials

Essential oils (EOs) have received attention in the food industry for developing biopolymer-derived food packaging materials. EOs are an excellent choice to replace petroleum-derived additives in food packaging materials due to their abundance in nature, eco-friendliness, and superior antimicrobial and antioxidant attributes. Thus far, EOs have been used in cellulose-, starch-, chitosan-, and protein-based food packaging materials. Biopolymer-based materials have lower antioxidant and antibacterial properties in comparison with their counterparts, and are not suitable for food packaging applications. Various synthetic-based compounds are being used to improve the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of biopolymers. However, natural essential oils are sustainable and non-harmful alternatives to synthetic antimicrobial and antioxidant agents for use in biopolymer-derived food packaging materials. The incorporation of EOs into the polymeric matrix affects their physicochemical properties, particularly improving their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. EOs in the food packaging materials increase the shelf life of the packaged food, inhibit the growth of microorganisms, and provide protection against oxidation. Essential oils also influence other properties, such as tensile, barrier, and optical properties of the biopolymers. This review article gives a detailed overview of the use of EOs in biopolymer-derived food packaging materials. The innovative ways of incorporating of EOs into food packaging materials are also highlighted, and future perspectives are discussed.

Integrating diverse plant bioactive ingredients with cyclodextrins to fabricate functional films for food application: a critical review

The popularity of plant bioactive ingredients has become increasingly apparent in the food industry. However, these plant bioactive ingredients have many deficiencies, including low water solubility, poor stability, and unacceptable odor. Cyclodextrins (CDs), as cyclic molecules, have been extensively studied as superb vehicles of plant bioactive ingredients. These CD inclusion compounds could be added into various film matrices to fabricate bioactive food packaging materials. Therefore, in the present review, we summarized the extraction methods of plant bioactive ingredients, the addition of these CD inclusion compounds into thin-film materials, and their applications in food packaging. Furthermore, the release model and mechanism of active film materials based on various plant bioactive ingredients with CDs were highlighted. Finally, the current challenges and new opportunities based on these film materials have been discussed.

Recent advances in cyclodextrin-based films for food packaging

Cyclodextrins are garnering increasing attention because they offer several benefits. For instance, cyclodextrins can form several complexes and supramolecular structures not only for food packaging but also for applications in other fields of science. In this review, we discussed the physical and chemical properties of cyclodextrins and the mechanism of their inclusion complex formation. The use of cyclodextrins in various types of food packaging is elaborated upon. We also explain the effects of cyclodextrins on the packaging of fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and processed foods. Furthermore, some feasible suggestions for future applications are provided. In addition to the positive attributes of cyclodextrins, there are some limitations and drawbacks, which are discussed briefly in this review. In summary, this review can serve as a guide for researchers exploring cyclodextrins for the development of various packaging films.

Application of starch-based nanoparticles and cyclodextrin for prebiotics delivery and controlled glucose release in the human gut: a review

Starches are a major constituent of staple foods and are the main source of energy in the human diet (55-70%). In the gastrointestinal tract, starches are hydrolyzed into glucose by α-amylase and α-glucosidase, which leads to a postprandial glucose elevation. High levels of blood glucose levels over sustained periods may promote type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity. Increasing consumption of starchy foods with a lower glycemic index may therefore contribute to improved health. In this paper, the preparation and properties of several starch-based nanoparticles (SNPs) and cyclodextrins (CDs) derivatives are reviewed. In particular, we focus on the various mechanisms responsible for the ability of these edible nanomaterials to modulate glucose release and the gut microbiome in the gastrointestinal tract. The probiotic functions are achieved through encapsulation and protection of prebiotics or bioactive components in foods or the human gut. This review therefore provides valuable information that could be used to design functional foods for improving human health and wellbeing.

Catechin/β-cyclodextrin complex modulates physicochemical properties of pre-gelatinized starch-based orally disintegrating films

The study aimed to develop pre-gelatinized starch-based orally disintegrating films (ODFs) containing catechin/β-cyclodextrin (CAT/β-CD) complex and to evaluate the influence of the complex on the physicochemical properties of the ODFs. SEM images showed that a compacter and more homogeneous ODFs were formed due to interactions between starch matrix and CAT/β-CD. FTIR spectra demonstrated that the interactions between starches or starch and CAT/β-CD were enhanced by hydrogen bonds. Thermal stability of ODFs was improved by incorporating CAT/β-CD, its peak decomposition temperature was enhanced from 310.74 to 321.83 °C. Tensile strength was increased from 11.597 ± 0.153 to 22.172 ± 0.752 MPa, while elongation at break decreased by from 11.233% ± 1.079% to 3.633% ± 0.058%. The prepared ODFs have an acceptable in vitro disintegration time, which were between 9.03 ± 0.79 s and 42.23 ± 1.76 s. Antimicrobial test showed that ODFs incorporating CAT/β-CD inhibited the growth of S. aureus and S. mutans successfully. The limited release of CAT molecules from the ODFs was also found. In addition, the ODFs have excellent antioxidant capacity. Its antioxidant activity remained at around 70% after 28 days of storage. The study indicated that the combination of ODFs and β-CD complex have a high potential for the delivery of natural active ingredients.

Ag@MOF-loaded p-coumaric acid modified chitosan/chitosan nanoparticle and polyvinyl alcohol/starch bilayer films for food packing applications

Developing novel bilayer food packing film having the ability to prevent bacterial infections and capable of inhibiting oxidation is utmost important, since bacterial infections and oxidation can cause food spoilage. Ag-Metal-organic framework loaded p-coumaric acid modified chitosan (P-CS/Ag@MOF) or chitosan nanoparticles (P-CSNPs/Ag@MOF) and polyvinyl alcohol/starch (PVA/ST) were used as the upper film and lower layer film to successfully prepare a bilayer composite film. The microscopic morphology, water resistance, oil resistance, oxidation resistance, optical properties, cytotoxicity and antibacterial properties of the composite films were compared. The results showed that the surface of P-CS/Ag@MOF bilayer was relatively smooth and its tensile strength (TS) was higher (27.67 MPa). Among them, P-CS/Ag@MOF bilayer films had better oil resistance and oxidation resistance activity. In addition, the P-CS/Ag@MOF bilayer film had good UV-blocking properties and transparency. P-CSNPs/Ag@MOF bilayer film had higher antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity.

Microfibrillated cellulose reinforced starch/polyvinyl alcohol antimicrobial active films with controlled release behavior of cinnamaldehyde

The starch/polyvinyl alcohol (ST/PVA) films incorporated with cinnamaldehyde (CIN) and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) were developed. The effect of MFC content on the films' properties was studied. The SEM results showed that MFC promoted compatibility among starch, PVA and CIN. With increased content of MFC, the strength of the films was improved and their flexibility reduced, the films' crystallinity degree and hydrophobicity were improved. The oxygen and water vapor permeability of the films both reduced first and then increased as a whole. The release of CIN from films into the food stimulant (10% ethanol) could be controlled by MFC. When MFC content was between 1% and 7.5%, it decelerated the release of CIN but high MFC content exceeded 10% promoted the release of CIN. It revealed that films containing CIN could inhibit growth of S. putrefaciens. It showed a good prospect of using MFC to develop controlled release active ST/PVA films.

Native Cyclodextrins and Their Derivatives as Potential Additives for Food Packaging: A Review

Cyclodextrins (CDs) have been used by the pharmaceutical and food industries since the 1970s. Their cavities allow the accommodation of several hydrophobic molecules, leading to the formation of inclusion complexes (ICs) increasing the guest molecules’ stability, allowing their controlled release, enhancing their water solubility and biodisponibility. Due to these, CDs and their ICs have been proposed to be used as potential allies in food packaging, especially in active packaging. In this review, we present the many ways in which the CDs can be applied in food packaging, being incorporated into the polymer matrix or as a constituent of sachets and/or pads aiming for food preservation, as well as the diverse polymer matrices investigated. The different types of CDs, natives and derivatives, and the several types of compounds that can be used as guest molecules are also discussed.

Effective strategies of sustained release and retention enhancement of essential oils in active food packaging films/coatings

Due to environmental issues caused by plastic packaging and growing consumer demand for fresh and safe food, there is a growing interest in antibacterial active food packaging films/coatings containing plant essential oils (EO). For the effective use of EO-incorporated active films/coatings, EO must be effectively integrated encapsulated in active films/coatings, and the integrated encapsulated EO must be released from active films/coatings slowly during storage to exhibit antibacterial effects more durable. Recently, several promising strategies have been proposed to improve the sustained release and retention enhancement of EO in active films/coatings, including particle encapsulation, nanoemulsion, Pickering emulsions, multilayer system, and electrospinning technology. This article reviewed the latest technologies of sustained release and retention enhancement strategies for encapsulating EO in active films/coatings. The advantages and disadvantages of these sustained release and retention enhancement strategies and their practical applications in food preservation are also introduced.

High-Amylose Corn Starch/Konjac Glucomannan Composite Film: Reinforced by Incorporating β-Cyclodextrin

Glycerol-plasticized high-amylose corn starch/konjac glucomannan (HCS/KGM) composite films incorporated with various concentrations of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) were prepared and investigated for structural, mechanical, and physical properties. The results of X-ray diffraction, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyses, and scanning electron microscopy indicated that β-CD excluded from the polymer chains and aggregated to form crystals during film formation, which drove HCS to interact with KGM more compactly. The thickness and transparency of the films increased after β-CD was incorporated. More associations of HCS/KGM enhanced the mechanical properties and reduced the moisture content of the films. The water vapor permeability of the HCS/KGM composite film was also improved significantly with the incorporation of β-CD. The enhanced association between biopolymers in the presence of β-CD will advance the development of a degradable active composite packaging film.
