Abstract
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) has attracted great attention in various fields due to its excellent properties, but its inherent hydrophobicity presents challenges in many applications that require controlled wettability. The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of some key strategies for modifying the wettability of PDMS surfaces by providing the main traditional methods for this modification and the results of altering the contact angle and other characteristics associated with this property. Four main technologies are discussed, namely, oxygen plasma treatment, surfactant addition, UV-ozone treatment, and the incorporation of nanomaterials, as these traditional methods are commonly selected due to the greater availability of information, their lower complexity compared to the new techniques, and the lower cost associated with them. Oxygen plasma treatment is a widely used method for improving the hydrophilicity of PDMS surfaces by introducing polar functional groups through oxidation reactions. The addition of surfactants provides a versatile method for altering the wettability of PDMS, where the selection and concentration of the surfactant play an important role in achieving the desired surface properties. UV-ozone treatment is an effective method for increasing the surface energy of PDMS, inducing oxidation, and generating hydrophilic functional groups. Furthermore, the incorporation of nanomaterials into PDMS matrices represents a promising route for modifying wettability, providing adjustable surface properties through controlled dispersion and interfacial interactions. The synergistic effect of nanomaterials, such as nanoparticles and nanotubes, helps to improve wetting behaviour and surface energy. The present review discusses recent advances of each technique and highlights their underlying mechanisms, advantages, and limitations. Additionally, promising trends and future prospects for surface modification of PDMS are discussed, and the importance of tailoring wettability for applications ranging from microfluidics to biomedical devices is highlighted. Traditional methods are often chosen to modify the wettability of the PDMS surface because they have more information available in the literature, are less complex than new techniques, and are also less expensive.

Abstract
Multiscale nano/micro-structured surfaces with superhydrophobicity are abundantly observed in nature such as lotus leaves, rose petals and butterfly wings, where microstructures typically reinforce mechanical stability, while nanostructures predominantly govern wettability. To emulate such hierarchical structures in nature, various methods have been widely applied in the past few decades to the manufacture of multiscale structures which can be applied to functionalities ranging from anti-icing and water-oil separation to self-cleaning. In this review, we highlight recent advances in nano/micro-structured superhydrophobic surfaces, with particular focus on non-metallic materials as they are widely used in daily life due to their lightweight, abrasion resistance and ease of processing properties. This review is organized into three sections. First, fabrication methods of multiscale hierarchical structures are introduced with their strengths and weaknesses. Second, four main application areas of anti-icing, water-oil separation, anti-fog and self-cleaning are overviewed by assessing how and why multiscale structures need to be incorporated to carry out their performances. Finally, future directions and challenges for nano/micro-structured surfaces are presented.

Abstract
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is commonly utilized as a food-contact surface by the food industry for processing and storage purposes due to its durability, ease of fabrication, and cost-effectiveness. Herein, we report a composite coating for the superhydrophobization of PVC without the use of polyfluoroalkyl chemistry. This coating rendered the PVC superhydrophobic, exhibiting a static water contact angle of 151.9 ± 0.7° and a contact angle hysteresis of only 3.1 ± 1.0°. The structure of this composite coating, consisting of polydopamine, nanodiamonds, and an alkyl silane, was investigated by utilizing both scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Surface chemistry was probed using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared, and the surface wetting behavior was thoroughly characterized using both static and dynamic water contact angle measurements. It was demonstrated that the superhydrophobic PVC was cleanable using a food-grade surfactant, becoming wet in contact with high concentration surfactant solutions, but regaining its nonwetting property upon rinsing with water. It was demonstrated that the coating produced a 2.1 ± 0.1 log10 reduction (99.2%) in the number of Escherichia coli O157:H7 cells and a 2.2 ± 0.1 log10 reduction (99.3%) in the number of Salmonella enterica Typhimurium cells that were able to adsorb onto PVC surfaces over a 24 h period. The use of this fluorine-free superhydrophobic coating on PVC equipment, such as conveyor belts within food production facilities, may help to mitigate bacterial cross-contamination and curb the spread of foodborne illnesses.

Abstract
The adhesion of sticky liquid foods to a contacting surface can cause many technical challenges. The food manufacturing sector is confronted with many critical issues that can be overcome with long-lasting and highly nonwettable coatings. Nanoengineered biomimetic surfaces with distinct wettability and tunable interfaces have elicited increasing interest for their potential use in addressing a broad variety of scientific and technological applications, such as antifogging, anti-icing, antifouling, antiadhesion, and anticorrosion. Although a large number of nature-inspired surfaces have emerged, food-safe nonwetted surfaces are still in their infancy, and numerous structural design aspects remain unexplored. This Review summarizes the latest scientific research regarding the key principles, fabrication methods, and applications of three important categories of nonwettable surfaces: superhydrophobic, liquid-infused slippery, and re-entrant structured surfaces. The Review is particularly focused on new insights into the antiwetting mechanisms of these nanopatterned structures and discovering efficient platform methodologies to guide their rational design when in contact with food materials. A detailed description of the current opportunities, challenges, and future scale-up possibilities of these nanoengineered surfaces in the food industry is also provided.

Abstract
In this study, particle loading, polyfluorinated alkyl silanes (PFAS or FAS) content, superhydrophobicity, and crack formation for nanocomposite coatings created by the spray coating process were investigated. The formulations comprised hydrophobic silica, epoxy resin, and fluorine-free or FAS constituents. The effect of FAS content and FAS-free compositions on the silica and epoxy coatings' chemistry, topography, and wetting properties was also studied. All higher particle loadings (~30 wt.%) showed superhydrophobicity, while lower particle loading formulations did not show superhydrophobic behavior until 13% wt. FAS content. The improved water repellency of coatings with increased FAS (low particle loadings) was attributed to a combination of chemistry and topography as described by the Cassie state. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra showed fluorine enrichment on the coating surface, which increases the intrinsic contact angle. However, increasing the wt.% of FAS in the final coating resulted in severe crack formation for higher particle loadings (~30 wt.%). The results show that fluorine-free and crack-free coatings exhibiting superhydrophobicity can be created.

Abstract
With the rapid development of industries, the issue of pollution on Earth has become increasingly severe. This has led to the deterioration of various surfaces, rendering them ineffective for their intended purposes. Examples of such surfaces include oil rigs, seawater intakes, and more. A variety of functional surface techniques have been created to address these issues, including superwetting surfaces, antifouling coatings, nano-polymer composite materials, etc. They primarily exploit the membrane's surface properties and hydration layer to improve the antifouling property. In recent years, biomimetic superwetting surfaces with non-toxic and environmental characteristics have garnered massive attention, greatly aiding in solving the problem of pollution. In this work, a detailed presentation of antifouling superwetting materials was made, including superhydrophobic surface, superhydrophilic surface, and superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic surface, along with the antifouling mechanisms. Then, the applications of the superwetting antifouling materials in antifouling domain were addressed in depth.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS There is a growing interest in designing superhydrophobic materials for many applications including self-clean surfaces, separation systems, and antifouling solutions. Peptides and amino acids offer attractive building blocks for these materials since they are biocompatible and biodegradable and can self-assemble into complex ordered structures. EXPERIMENTS AND SIMULATIONS We designed a self-standing superhydrophobic material through the self-assembly of an individual functionalized aromatic amino acid, Cbz-Phe(4F). The self-assembly of Cbz-Phe(4F) was investigated by experimental and computational methods. Moreover, when drop-casted three times on a solid support, it formed a self-standing superhydrophobic material. The mechanical properties and chemical stability of this self-standing superhydrophobic material were demonstrated. FINDINGS The designed Cbz-Phe(4F) self-assembled into fibrous structures in solution. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations revealed that the fibrous backbone of Cbz-Phe(4F) aggregations was stabilized through hydrogen bonds, whereas the isotropic growth of the aggregates was driven by hydrophobic interactions. Importantly, when drop-casted three times on a solid support, it formed a self-standing superhydrophobic material. Moreover, this material had a high mechanical strength, with a Young's modulus of 53 GPa, resistance to enzymatic degradation, and thermal stability up to 200 ℃. This study provides a simple strategy to generate smart and functional materials by the simple self-assembly of functional individual amino acids.

Abstract
The development and application of curcumin-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic techniques (PDT) in food preservation are highly anticipated to resist microbial contamination and prevent food spoilage. In this study, high-utilization curcumin-loaded bilayer nanoencapsulation was prepared to incorporated into a gelatin-based edible coating for beef preservation. Bilayer nanoencapsulation composed of shellac and poly-γ-glutamic acid (CS-NPs) improved the encapsulation efficiency of shellac to curcumin by >1.5 times. The incorporation of CS-NPs improved the compact of coating structure with hydrogen bonds. In food simulants, coatings possessed control release properties and the release mechanism was Fick diffusion (without the addition of γ-PGA) and non-Fick diffusion (with the addition of γ-PGA). These prepared coatings exhibited excellent barrier, antibacterial (antibacterial ratio > 95 %), and antioxidant properties (scavenging ratio > 90 %). Curcumin mediated antimicrobial photodynamic techniques (PDT) of the coatings were verified with the activity of blue light-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS). The shelf-life of beef was extended by the coating with blue light. In summary, the design of bilayer CS-NPs significantly improved the utilization of curcumin which provided a high-efficiency strategy for PDT-responsive food packaging with environmental practical.

Abstract
Along with the growth of the world's population that reduces the accessibility of arable land and water, demand for food, as the fundamental element of human beings, has been continuously increasing each day. This situation not only becomes a challenge for the modern food chain systems but also affects food availability throughout the world. Edible coating is expected to play a significant role in food preservation and packaging, where this technique can reduce the number of food loss and subsequently ensure more sustainable food and agriculture production through various mechanisms. This review provides comprehensive information related to the currently available advanced technologies of coating applications, which include advanced methods (i.e., nanoscale and multilayer coating methods) and advanced properties (i.e., active, self-healing, and super hydrophobic coating properties). Furthermore, the benefits and drawbacks of those technologies during their applications on foods are also discussed. For further research, opportunities are foreseen to develop robust edible coating methods by combining multiple advanced technologies for large-scale and more sustainable industrial production.

Abstract
Adhesion of liquid foods on their packaging materials has caused significant food wastes and environment pollution, which has attracted great attention. Food grade superhydrophobic coatings are very promising to solve the issue but suffer from low mechanical stability and complex preparation methods. Herein, a food grade superhydrophobic coating for anti-adhesion of liquid foods was prepared by combining edible paraffin wax, polydimethylsiloxane-modified attapulgite natural nanorods and a food grade silicone adhesive. The concentration of polydimethylsiloxane-modified attapulgite, ultrasonication time and the volume ratio of the paraffin wax/attapulgite suspension to the silicone adhesive solution have great influences on wettability and morphology of the coatings. The coatings exhibit good static and dynamic superhydrophobicity due to their hierarchical micro-/nanostructure and low surface energy of the polydimethylsiloxane-modified attapulgite and paraffin wax. Moreover, the coatings exhibit good mechanical and chemical stability. The coatings are also highly repellent towards various liquid foods including the hot ones. Furthermore, the coatings are applicable onto various frequently used flexible and hard food packing materials including polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, aluminium alloy and paper, etc. Thus, the superhydrophobic coatings have great application potential in the food packing industry for anti-adhesion of liquid foods.

Abstract
Increasing concerns revolve around bacterial cross-contamination of leafy green vegetables via food-contact surfaces. Given that stainless-steel is among the commonly used food-contact surfaces, this study reports a coating strategy enhancing its hygiene and microbiological safety through an antifouling approach via superhydrophobicity. The developed method involves growing a nickel-nanodiamond nanocomposite film on 304 stainless-steel via electroplating and sequential functionalization of the outer surface layer with nonpolar organosilane molecules via polydopamine moieties. The resultant superhydrophobic stainless-steel surfaces had a static water contact angle of 156.3 ± 1.9° with only 2.3 ± 0.5° contact angle hysteresis. Application of the coating to stainless-steel was demonstrated to yield 2.3 ± 0.6 log10 and 2.0 ± 0.9 log10 reductions in the number of adherent gram-negative Escherichia coli O157:H7 and gram-positive Listeria innocua cells, respectively. These population reductions were shown to be statistically significant (α = 0.05). Coated stainless-steel also resisted fouling when contacted with contaminated romaine lettuce leaves and maintained significant non-wetting character when abraded with sand or contacted with high concentration surfactant solutions. The incorporation of superhydrophobic stainless-steel surfaces into food processing equipment used for washing and packaging leafy green vegetables has the potential to mitigate the transmission of pathogenic bacteria within food production facilities.

Abstract
Biodegradable gelatin (G) food packaging films are in increasing demand as the substitution of petroleum-based preservative materials. However, G packaging films universally suffer from weak hydrophobicity in practical applications. Constructing a hydrophobic micro/nanocoating with low surface energy is an effective countermeasure. However, the poor compatibility with the hydrophilic G substrate often leads to the weak interfacial adhesion and poor durability of the hydrophobic coating. To overcome this obstacle, we used (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APS) as an interfacial bridging agent to prepare a highly hydrophobic, versatile G nanocomposite film. Specifically, tannic acid (TA)-modified nanohydroxyapatite (n-HA) particles (THA) were introduced in G matrix (G-THA) to improve the mechanical properties. Micro/nanostructure with low surface energy composed of nanozinc oxide (Nano-ZnO)/APS/stearic acid (SA) (NAS) was constructed on the surface of G-THA film (G-THA/NAS) through one-step spray treatment. Consequently, as-prepared G-THA/NAS film presented excellent mechanics (tensile strength: 7.6 MPa, elongation at break: 292.7%), water resistance ability (water contact angle: 150.4°), high UV-shielding (0% transmittance at 200 nm), degradability (100% degradation rate after buried in the natural soil for 15 days), antioxidant (78.8% of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity), and antimicrobial (inhibition zone against Escherichia coli: 15.0 mm and Staphylococcus aureus: 16.5 mm) properties. It should be emphasized that the bridging function of APS significantly improves the interfacial adhesion ability of the NAS coating with more than 95% remaining area after the cross-cut adhesion test. Meanwhile, the G-THA/NAS film could maintain stable and long-lasting hydrophobic surfaces against UV radiation, high temperature, and abrasion. Based on these multifunctional properties, the G-THA/NAS film was successfully applied as a liquid packaging material. To sum up, we provide a feasible and effective method to prepare high-performance green packaging films.

Abstract
Silk fibers (SF) reeled from silkworms are constituted by natural proteins, and their characteristic structural features render them applicable as materials for textiles and packaging. Modification of SF with functional materials can facilitate their applications in additional areas. In this work, the preparation of functional SF embedded with carbon dots (CD) is reported through the direct feeding of a CD-modified diet to silkworms. Fluorescent and mechanically robust SF are obtained from silkworms (Bombyx mori) that are fed on CDs synthesized from the Morus rubra variant of mulberry leaves (MB-CDs). MB-CDs are introduced to silkworms from the third instar by spraying them on the silkworm feed, the mulberry leaves. MB-CDs are synthesized hydrothermally without adding surface passivating agents and are observed to have a quantum yield of 22%. With sizes of ≈4 nm, MB-CDs exhibited blue fluorescence, and they can be used as efficient fluorophores to detect Dopamine (DA) up to the limit of 4.39 nM. The nanostructures and physical characteristics of SF weren't altered when the SF are infused with MB-CDs. Also, a novel DA sensing application based on fluorescence with the MB-CD incorporated SF is demonstrated.

Abstract
Cellulose-based fabrics are ubiquitous in our daily lives. They are the preferred choice for bedding materials, active sportswear, and next-to-skin apparels. However, the hydrophilic and polysaccharide characteristics of cellulose materials make them vulnerable to bacterial attack and pathogen infection. The design of antibacterial cellulose fabrics has been a long-term and on-going effort. Fabrication strategies based on the construction of surface micro-/nanostructure, chemical modification, and the application of antibacterial agents have been extensively investigated by many research groups worldwide. This review systematically discusses recent research on super-hydrophobic and antibacterial cellulose fabrics, focusing on morphology construction and surface modification. First, natural surfaces showing liquid-repellent and antibacterial properties are introduced and the mechanisms behind are explained. Then, the strategies for fabricating super-hydrophobic cellulose fabrics are summarized, and the contribution of the liquid-repellent function to reducing the adhesion of live bacteria and removing dead bacteria is elucidated. Representative studies on cellulose fabrics functionalized with super-hydrophobic and antibacterial properties are discussed in detail, and their potential applications are also introduced. Finally, the challenges in achieving super-hydrophobic antibacterial cellulose fabrics are discussed, and the future research direction in this area is proposed. Abstract
Cellulose paper packaging materials have gained considerable attention as substitutes for petroleum-based plastics owing to their biodegradability, renewability, flexibility, and good mechanical strength. However, high hydrophilicity and the absence of essential antibacterial activity limit their application in food packaging. In this study, a facile and energy-saving method was developed to improve the hydrophobicity of cellulose paper and endow it with a long-acting antibacterial effect by integrating cellulose paper substrate with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). A dense and homogenous coating of regular hexagonal ZnMOF-74 nanorods was in-situ formed on a paper surface by layer-by-layer assembly followed by low-surface-energy polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modification to prepare a superhydrophobic PDMS@(ZnMOF-74)5@paper. Excellent anti-fouling, self-cleaning, and antibacterial adhesion performances were obtained for this superhydrophobic paper. In addition, active carvacrol was loaded into the pores of ZnMOF-74 nanorods on PDMS@(ZnMOF-74)5@paper to combine antibacterial adhesion together with bactericidal ability, ultimately resulting in a completely "bacteria-free" surface and sustained antibacterial performance. The resultant superhydrophobic papers not only showed overall migration values within the limit of 10 mg/dm2 but also good stability against various harsh mechanical, environmental, and chemical treatments. This work gave insights into the potential of in-situ-developed MOFs-dopped coating as a functionally modified platform for preparing active superhydrophobic paper-based packaging.

Abstract
Cellulose is the cheapest and mostly widespread green raw material on earth. Due to the easy and versatile developed modification of cellulose, many cellulosic paper-based sustainable materials and their multifunctional applications have attained increasing interest under the background of the implementation of the "plastic ban" policy. However, intrinsic cellulose paper is hydrophilic and non-water-proof, which highly limited its application, thus becoming a bottleneck for the development of "cellulosic paper-based plastic replacement". Unquestioningly, the superhydrophobic modification of cellulosic paper-based materials and the extension of their high value-added applications are highly desired, which is the main content of this review. More importantly, we presented the comprehensive discussion of the functionalized applications of superhydrophobic cellulosic paper-based materials ranging from conventional products to high value-added functional materials such as paper straw and paper mulch film for the first time, which have great industrialization potential and value. This review would offer the valuable guidance and insightful information for the rational construction of sustainable superhydrophobic cellulosic paper for advanced functional devices.

Abstract
In the current work, we present a renewable alternative coating formulation made of durable titania nanoparticles and oxidized nanocellulose (TiO2NPs@OCNs) nanocomposites and sodium alginate (SA), to create an environmentally friendly and secure food packaging paper. OCNs sugarcane fibers are firstly hydrolyzed using ammonium persulphate (APS). Then, TiO2NPs@OCNs nanocomposites are made in situ with OCNs using a green water-based sol-gel synthesis. Gram (+) microorganisms as well as Gram (-) bacteria are used to test the antibacterial properties of the TiO2NPs@OCN dispersions. The results show that the TiO2NP@OCNs significantly decreases the growth for all bacterial species. The TiO2NP@OCNs nanocomposites are mixed with SA, and the resulting formulations are used to coat paper sheets. The corresponding physicochemical properties are evaluated using FTIR, TGA, AFM, SEM, and EDX. Furthermore, the mechanical strength, air permeability, and water vapor characteristics of the paper sheets treated with SA/TiO2NPs@OCN are carried out, resulting in a great improvement of these properties. Finally, the SA/TiO2NPs@OCNs coated papers have been used as packaging for strawberries. The findings demonstrate that coated papers could preserve strawberry quality better than unpacked fruit and extend strawberry shelf life from 6 to 18 days.

Abstract
The broad application potential of superhydrophobic coatings is limited by the usage of environment-threatening materials and poor durability. The nature-inspired design and fabrication of self-healing coatings is a promising approach for addressing these issues. In this study, we report a fluorine-free and biocompatible superhydrophobic coating that can be thermally healed after abrasion. The coating is composed of silica nanoparticles and carnauba wax, and the self-healing is based on surface enrichment of wax in analogy to the wax secretion in plant leaves. The coating not only exhibits fast self-healing, just in 1 min under moderate heating, but also displays increased water repellency and thermal stability after healing. The rapid self-healing ability of the coating is attributed to the relatively low melting point of carnauba wax and its migration to the surface of the hydrophilic silica nanoparticles. The dependence of self-healing on the size and loading of particles provides insights into the process. Furthermore, the coating exhibits high levels of biocompatibility where the viability of fibroblast L929 cells was ∼90%. The presented approach and insights provide valuable guidelines in the design and fabrication of self-healing superhydrophobic coatings.

Abstract
The preparation methods of the superhydrophobic surface play an important role in its application, but most of the existing preparation methods are complicated in operation, high in cost, and polluting to the environment. In order to find a simple, rapid, low-cost, and nonenvironmentally polluting preparation method of the superhydrophobic surface, this paper used liquid silicone rubber as the carrier. Before the liquid silicone rubber was nearly cured, it was evenly covered with a layer of silicon dioxide powder, and then 5 N weight was used to compact the powder on the rubber surface, so that the superhydrophobic surface was quickly formed on its surface. The wettability, bouncing performance, self-cleaning performance, and bending durability of liquid silicone rubber before and after treatment were compared. The results show that the static contact angle and rolling angle of the liquid silicone rubber after powder pressing were 158.22 ± 2.01° and 1.00 ± 0.50°, respectively. Moreover, the superhydrophobic surface formed by the powder pressing method had good self-cleaning performance, high temperature resistance, bending resistance, and excellent droplet bounce performance. The strategy of preparing a superhydrophobic surface by a one-step powder pressing method may be applied to the preparation of the superhydrophobic surface on a large scale.

Abstract
Food loss and waste occur for many reasons, from crop processing to household leftovers. Even though some waste generation is unavoidable, a considerable amount is due to supply chain inefficiencies and damage during transport and handling. Packaging design and materials innovations represent real opportunities to reduce food waste within the supply chain. Besides, changes in people's lifestyles have increased the demand for high-quality, fresh, minimally processed, and ready-to-eat food products with extended shelf-life, that need to meet strict and constantly renewed food safety regulations. In this regard, accurate monitoring of food quality and spoilage is necessary to diminish both health hazards and food waste. Thus, this work provides an overview of the most recent advances in the investigation and development of food packaging materials and design with the aim to improve food chain sustainability. Enhanced barrier and surface properties as well as active materials for food conservation are reviewed. Likewise, the function, importance, current availability, and future trends of intelligent and smart packaging systems are presented, especially considering biobased sensor development by 3D printing technology. In addition, driving factors affecting fully biobased packaging design and materials development and production are discussed, considering byproducts and waste minimization and revalorization, recyclability, biodegradability, and other possible ends-of-life and their impact on product/package system sustainability.

Abstract
Cellulose nanocrystals, which have unique properties of high aspect ratio, high surface area, high mechanical strength, and a liquid crystalline nature, constitute a renewable nanomaterial with great potential for several uses (e.g., composites, films and barriers). However, their intrinsic hydrophilicity results in materials that are moisture sensitive and exhibit poor water stability. This limits their use and competitiveness as a sustainable alternative against fossil-based materials/plastics in packaging, food storage, construction and materials application, which cause contamination in our oceans and environment. To make cellulose nanocrystal films superhydrophobic, toxic chemicals such as fluorocarbons are typically attached to their surfaces. Hence, there is a pressing need for environmentally friendly alternatives for their modification and acquiring this important surface property. Herein, we describe the novel creation of superhydrophobic, fluorocarbon-free and transparent cellulose nanocrystal films with functional groups by a bioinspired combination of self-assembly and organocatalytic surface modification at the nanoscale using food approved organic acid catalysts. The resulting film-surface is superhydrophobic (water contact angle > 150°) and has self-cleaning properties (the lotus effect). In addition, the superhydrophobic cellulose nanocrystal films have excellent water stability and significantly decreased oxygen permeability at high relative humidity with oxygen transmission rates better than those of commonly used plastics.

Abstract
Researches on superhydrophobicity have been overwhelming and have shown great advantages in various fields. However, the abrasion resistance of superhydrophobic structures was usually poor, and they were easily damaged by external force or harsh environment, which greatly limited the applications of superhydrophobic surfaces. Much attention has been paid to improving the abrasion resistance of superhydrophobic materials by researchers. In this review, aimed at the advances on improving the abrasion resistance of superhydrophobic surfaces, it was summarized and compared three enhancement strategies including the reasonably design of micro-nano structures, the adoption of adhesives, and the preparation of self-healing surface. Finally, the applications of typical superhydrophobic materials with abrasion resistance were reviewed in various fields. In order to broaden the application fields of superhydrophobic materials, the abarasion resistance should be further improved. Therefore, we proposed the ideas for the future development of superhydrophobic materials with higher abrasion resistance. We hope that this review will provide a new approach to the preparation and development of stable superhydrophobic surfaces with higher abrasion resistance.
